Drive-in returns After last year’s debut sold out in a flash, the Greendale Drive-In will be back by popular demand next month for a night of fun and movies under the stars. Co-organisers Kristin Sargent and Sarah Duncanson didn’t know what to expect from last November’s inaugural event, but were blown away by the community response. The Greendale Family Friendly Drive-In Movie Night will return on March 26, with support from Moorabool council and The Greendale Social Club and Assets Committee. Ms Sargent said the gates at Egans Reserve will open at 5pm with pre-movie entertainment featuring local musicians, along with an Easter twilight market and local food trucks. “We’ll be raising money for BADGAR Wildlife Rescue, the local CFA and The Blackwood Community Emergency Response Team,” she said. Vaccine snub anger By Benjamin Millar The federal government has been slammed for the Melton area being “forgotten” in the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out despite being one of the areas hardest hit by the pandemic. The first vaccine to be administered in Australia was delivered on Sunday with Prime Minister Scott Morrison among the earliest to receive the jab. Only limited doses of COVID-19 vaccines are available in the first phase and the groups deemed at highest risk of infection are
receiving the initial doses. The Victorian government began delivering doses to hotel quarantine and health hotel workers on Monday, as well as airport and port workers, high-risk frontline health staff and public sector residential aged care staff and residents. The federal government is responsible for providing the vaccine to residents and workers in private sector aged care and disability care and has revealed a list of locations where the first phase will roll out. Melton has recorded 1159 COVID-19 cases
since the pandemic broke out, behind only Wyndham, Brimbank, Hume and Whittlesea. McKenzie Aged Care Sutton Park in Melton South was the worst affected local aged care home, recording seven deaths and a total of 87 cases, including 46 residents. Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor said the federal government needs to answer why the electorate of Gorton, which had some of the highest coronavirus infections numbers in the country, has been forgotten when it comes to the first locations of the vaccine roll-out. “There are a lot of unanswered questions
regarding supply and delivery,” he said. “The residents of Melton and Brimbank need to be assured they’ll have access to the vaccine. We know that Scott Morrison is always about the announcement, not about the delivery.” Mr Morrison described the beginning of Australia’s COVID-19 vaccination program on Sunday as a “game changer”. “And its successful roll-out will only further reduce the risk. And when you reduce the risk then obviously you do not need more blunt and extreme measures.”

TAFE plans for Cobblebank centre By Benjamin Millar The fast-growing Cobblebank centre could soon be home to TAFE courses with Melton council and Victoria University moving towards signing a memorandum of understanding on the plan. An update on the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was presented to a recent council meeting, with councillors voting to approve the chief executive progressing discussions between the two parties. VU confirmed its interest in brokering a
TAFE and university presence within the City of Melton following early talks between the parties late last year. A report to the council indicated that as part of the plans, VU will be seeking state government approval to sell its current landholding in Melton to fund the purchase of a site closer to the Cobblebank activity centre and railway station. “VU advises that this move will ensure a more central location, and that associated public transport will reduce accessibility barriers for future students,” it stated.
“This would also secure the opportunity to work closely with Western Health at the new Melton hospital, both in its planning and once it is operational.” VU has also entered discussions with Federation University to discuss how the two universities might both be able to maintain a presence in the region. “Discussions to date have included the offering of a suite of well-targeted, relevant course offerings, aimed to be specifically linked to industry and job outcomes in the region,” the report stated.
“This commitment of VU represents a pleasing step forward in the City of Melton’s ability to begin to address its health and community services workforce planning and jobs shortfall, and the creation of meaningful and sustainable education and employment pathways.” VU deputy vice-chancellor Grant Dreher has written to the Department of Education and Training seeking state government funding towards offering VET courses to smaller groups, with a view towards running pilot programs as early as the first half of this year.
A family hat-trick It was a family affair for Eynesbury Cricket Club’s third XI in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association on Saturday. Short on players, Arthur and son Heath Pritchard put their hands up to help out the club, playing alongside Heath’s son, Lachlan Pritchard. Heath, who had a successful sub-district cricket career, said it was special to play with both his father and son. “It’s a rare thing,” he said of three generations playing together. “My son started playing at Eynesbury this season. They were short a couple of weeks ago and I played. “They were short again for the weekend and both myself and dad said we would play.” It’s believed to be the first time three generations have played in the one side for the club. Arthur, who came in at number five, got the chance to bat with both his grandson and son, who came in at six and seven respectively.
The Australian over-70s captain top scored with 66 not out. “[Arthur] getting to bat with Lachie was nice and that was the biggest highlight of the day,” Heath said. “He also got to bat with a few other kids.” Heath made seven, while Lachie made five, having made 35 in the under-15s earlier that morning. Both Arthur and Heath have had successful cricket careers, but the weekend was the first time they have played an official game together. Heath said he never thought he’d have the chance to play with his dad or son. “Dad was going down the ranks when I was going up in our cricketing lives,” he said. “Lachie played one season when he was nine and now [is] back as a 14-year old out of the blue,” he said. “He seems to be enjoying it.” Tara Murray

Fix for potholed road By Benjamin Millar The long-awaited upgrade of an unsealed stretch of road in Mt Cottrell will soon get under way with plans revealed for the $5.1 million Boundary Road sealing project. A 4.3-kilometre stretch of the road from Mt Cottrell Road to The Mall will be sealed as part of Melton’s program to upgrade some of the more than 100 kilometres of unsealed road in the municipality due to increased traffic. Intersections at Downing and Faulkners roads will also be upgraded.

A council document outlining the plans notes that Boundary Road is an unsealed rural road running along the southern boundary of the municipality, with the council sharing responsibility with Wyndham for maintenance and capital works. “This business case presents the need for the road to be constructed to a sealed rural standard,” it states. “With the increased traffic volumes in the area as a result of population growth and the sealing of Mt Cottrell Road, the exposure to risk is increasing.” The document notes that the currently unsealed road has poor traction, which can pose risks, particularly in wet weather, as Boundary Road operates at an 80km/h speed limit. Other issues include pot holes as a result of the high volumes of traffic and dust polluting
the air, settling over nearby homes and any clothes left out on washing lines. The report also notes the increased servicing required for cars regularly using the road and potential for damage. “Loose stones on unsealed roads are also a concern to residents as they can be projectiles launched from road traffic and cause windscreen and body paint damage to
vehicles,” it states. “The construction of Boundary Road to a sealed rural standard will address all the above impacts.” The upgrade will require the removal of protected flora including about 300-350 spear-grass specimens as well as wallaby grass, windmill grass, grey roly-poly, kangaroo grass and fragrant saltbush.

Highway access to improve Work will begin next month on a new intersection to improve access to the Melton Highway for people living in new estates in Fraser Rise. The new intersection will be constructed by the developers of the Kerani Heights estate. Crown Drive, which currently starts at Beattys Road, will be extended to the Melton Highway, while a new intersection at the corner of Crown Drive and the Melton Highway will be constructed. Estate manager Sudha Williams said the new intersection would be fully signalised. He said Melton Highway will be duplicated at the intersection and it’s hoped this will result in minimal traffic disruptions while the intersection is being constructed. Two new lanes on the southern side will be constructed first, which will not impact the existing road. The northern section will then be completed. Work on the intersection is expected to be finished later this year. Mr Williams said the new intersection would provide easier access to the Melton Highway for not only the residents of Kerani Heights, but also other developments in the area. As of January, more than half the land had been sold in the Kerani Heights estate. The neighbouring Sienna and Aldo estates, both on the Melton Highway at Fraser Rise, are also under construction.

Taxi driver assaulted Two Sydenham men and a Ballarat woman have been arrested following an aggravated carjacking of a taxi in Aintree early last Friday. Police were called to the intersection of Woodlea Boulevard and Leakes Road about 4am following reports a taxi driver had been assaulted over a disputed fare. The 32-year-old taxi driver was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries. Two Sydenham men, aged 22 and 28, and a 28-year-old Ballarat woman fled the scene but were arrested after being located nearby.

Trio land apprenticeships Three western suburbs apprentices are hitting the tools in Ardeer as part of the CitiPower and Powercor’s apprenticeship program. More than 1200 people applied for the 2021 intake, with 10 candidates selected to work across the state, including at Ballarat, Bendigo, Echuca, Horsham, Geelong, Ardeer and Burnley. Lineworker Riley Moerenhout, cable jointer Jordan Beckman and meter technician Sam Cordy are all completing their apprenticeships at the Ardeer depot. The new apprentices will receive hands-on learning and training through Holmesglen TAFE.
Their work will range from delivering major works programs to restoring power safely and quickly to customers if a fault occurs. For Mr Beckman, who lives in Brookfield, it was third time lucky applying for a apprenticeship with CitiPower and Powercor. “I was quite surprised that I could get a position with the odds what they were,” he said. “I’d applied three years in a row. I’m quite excited to get out there. “I had family and friends in the business and they really liked it. I like the team atmosphere in the position and the overall culture.”
Police have arrested four people as part of an investigation into an aggravated home invasion in Kurunjang on December 9. Police allege a group of males broke into the property on Highfield Way about 2.50am, armed with a range of weapons, seriously assaulting a man at the property. Gang Crime Squad detectives, Melbourne Embona Taskforce and Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit executed a series of warrants in Deer Park, St Albans, Keilor Downs and Fitzroy about 5am last Tuesday. An 18-year-old Fitzroy man and a 17-year-old Keilor Downs youth were both charged with a number of offences. Bowser pain: Council joins fight By Benjamin Millar Melton council has joined the growing chorus of calls to bring an end to “exorbitant” fuel prices at petrol pumps in Melton. Star Weekly recently reported community concerns that people in Melton are often paying at least 20 cents more per litre at the pump than motorists in neighbouring areas, costing then more than $10 extra every time they fill up. Melton councillors have unanimously
thrown their support behind taking steps to pressure local fuel retailers to drop their prices to be more in line with other locations. Councillor Julie Shannon moved a successful motion at this month’s council meeting calling for the council to follow Melton MP Steve McGhie’s steps in requesting the investigation of petrol prices in the Melton township being regularly inflated in comparison to neighbouring areas. Cr Sophie Ramsay suggested via an
amendment to the motion that the council implore the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to take action regarding the ongoing situation in Melton. The council will now write to the ACCC chairman Rod Simms, Victorian consumer affairs minister Melissa Horne and federal Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor to raise their concerns. It is also contacting local fuel retailers in Melton requesting a response “to justify the

Plastic fantastic of soft plastic thrown out by Australians each year is recycled, according to Clean Up Australia. “We collect roughly 30 million pieces of plastic every month through our customer REDcycle program, so there’s a huge opportunity to use Polyrok in other Coles developments or other construction projects,” she said. “This is just the beginning of what is possible – this project alone will help repurpose more than 6.5 million pieces of soft plastic from landfill.” Replas joint managing director Mark Jacobsen said the partnership has helped take one of the most problematic plastics and turned it into a fit for purpose resource. Cobblebank’s brand new shopping centre has played its part in saving more than 6.5 million pieces of plastic from landfill before even opening. A groundbreaking new construction material known as Polyrok has been incorporated into the new Coles supermarket development due to open later this year. Polyrok is made from plastic bags and soft plastic packaging that is recovered from the REDcycle program, offering a more sustainable alternative to aggregate minerals used in concrete. The technology was researched and developed in partnership with RMIT University and recycling organisations RED Group and Replas. Coles state construction manager Victoria Fiona Lloyd said the supermarket giant has been looking at opportunities to use the new technology in future developments given only 10 per cent of the 3.5 million tonnes

Council sticks with rate cap By Benjamin Millar Moorabool ratepayers will escape being hit with a rate hike beyond the official state cap after councilors voted not to apply for an exemption to the cap in the coming financial year. In a motion moved by Cr Rod Ward and seconded by Cr Tonia Dudzik, the councillors recently resolved not to apply for a rate cap variation for the 2021-22 budgeting and planning cycle, making it five years since the council last secured an exemption in 2016-17.

A council report had recommended against applying for a variation for the 2021-22 financial year, meaning ratepayers will face an average rise of up to 1.5 per cent – the cap announced by the state government in December. “Whilst the rate cap increase is lower than
the 2.0 per cent estimated in our Strategic Financial Plan, the lower rate cap reflects a low inflation environment as a result of the coronavirus pandemic,” the report stated. “With the continuing impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the ongoing economic recovery currently under way, it is recommended that council do not seek a rate cap variation for the 2021-22 financial year.” Moorabool council’s assessment of its ongoing financial sustainability has identified a “medium risk”, with significant changes in funding sources limiting ability to deliver on council’s objectives.
While applying for a rate cap variation where required has been identified as one way of managing the risk, the council will this year place greater emphasis on other measures including advocacy, cutting costs and identifying other opportunities for revenue. The council report noted that whilst working within the confines of the rate cap continues to present challenges, Moorabool Shire has managed to gradually stabilise and improve its finances in a difficult environment. “Council may need to consider or reassess its position in future years … especially if external funding is not available.”
Village work begins Work will soon be under way on a new IGA supermarket and more than 30 townhouses as part of the long-awaited ‘Maddingley Village’ development. Construction is scheduled to begin next month on the project, with 33 townhouses to be built on blocks near the Bacchus Marsh West Golf Club on McCormacks Road. Empire Properties has confirmed the shopping centre remains an important part of the plans, featuring a 2200 square metre supermarket, childcare centre and aquatic and fitness centre. The supermarket will be a Champions IGA, joining existing stores in Bacchus Marsh, Geelong West and other locations. RPM real estate is handling the sale of the 33 double-storey townhouses. A project spokesperson said each home will have has its own distinct identity.
“Extensive gardens and open communal spaces connect the residences to a generous, lushly-planted landscape leading to an array of modern amenities including a supermarket, medical practices and an aquatic centre.” A number of the properties will have views across the fairways and greens at the Bacchus Marsh West golf club. Mr McGhie said he has taken the issue up with the Consumer Affairs Minister Melissa Horne and will be contacting federal Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor to discuss this issue soon, as fuel prices are regulated by the federal government. “In the interim I strongly encourage residents to complain to the ACCC [Australian Competition and Consumer Commission]” he said. The ACCC’s latest petrol monitoring report showed that average petrol prices rose in the 2020 September quarter after a record low earlier in the year. Although the ACCC does not set fuel prices, it does monitor retail fuel prices on a daily basis. A spokesperson said it has the power to investigate where it sees issues of concern. “Where we find sufficient evidence we will take action to protect consumers against misleading and anti-competitive conduct by fuel retailers.” Mr McGhie’s promise to take action was widely welcomed on social media, where some residents said they had seen price differences of up to 50 cents per litre between Melton and Watergardens.

Melton’s Andre Peters said the lack of independent competition makes it easier for the major fuel companies to keep prices inflated well above those in neighbouring suburbs. “Sadly there is no competition in Melton as there are no independents,” he said. “Generally we pay at least 20 cents a litre more at times in Melton.” A BP spokesman said petrol prices at the pump can be impacted by a number of different factors.
He said while there are currently about 1400 BP branded sites across Australia, about three quarters are owned by independent business partners who set their own retail pricing. “When it comes to retail fuel pricing, our aim is to be competitive and attract customers to our sites,” he said. “Generally speaking, the price at the pump is impacted by a number of different factors. In particular, international product prices and competition between service stations in a local
area. There are also other factors including exchange rates, taxes and local operating costs.” On Monday, unleaded 91 pump prices at Melton’s BP, Coles Express and 7/11 Mobil were all at 155.9 cents per litre, according to price comparison website Petrol Spy, with Woolworths Caltex at 168.9. Meanwhile Bacchus Marsh BP, Coles Express and 7/11 Mobil prices were 129.9 cents per litre – 26 cents less per litre – and independent outlets were just 119.9 cents per litre. 628174

Making history Mia Smith has made history in the Western Region Football League, becoming the first transgender player to be granted permission to play in any of the league’s competitions. She spoke with Tara Murray about what it means to be able to take to the field for North Sunshine’s women’s side this year.

ia Smith never had aspirations to play with North Sunshine in the Western Region Football League women’s competition. Smith, who is transgender, joined the club as a supporter and was happy watching the club’s women’s team from the sidelines. She started to help out where she could and last year joined the club’s committee. That led to a few training sessions with the Roadrunners, and sparked a dream to one day pull on the jumper in a game for the club. That dream is now a reality. The WRFL recently granting Smith permission to play for the Roadrunners women’s side this season. A WRFL spokesperson said Smith was the first transgender player to take to the field in the league. Her approval to play was granted under the Australian Football League community football gender diversity policy. “It’s so amazing,” Smith said last week. “I’m flying high. “The club has been absolutely tremendous. The club hasn’t seen me as a trans person but as a person.” Smith said it was special to be the first transgender player to take to the field in the competition. “It’s pretty mind blowing,” she said. “I know a lot of transgender playing at the moment and to be the first in this league would be awesome.” Smith first formed a bond with the Roadrunners at her former workplace, Pride of our Footscray Community Bar, when team members dropped in for a drink.

She said that as the team was supporting her in her work, that she would support them on the field, and went to watch them play. “I just went along to support them,” she said. “I would watch them play four players down … win or lose, each week they played as if there was a point or two in it. “The players are so amazing and I’m in awe the way they do it.” Smith joined in training sessions last year before COVID-19 shut down the season. She returned to the field again with the team ahead of the upcoming season.

“I had no interest in playing footy until a few years ago,” she admits. Smith, who is 53-years-old, said she hadn’t played any sport, including football, since finishing school. She said she would love to play a couple of seasons. “I don’t want special rights, I just want equal rights,” she said. “The committee, and especially the women’s team, has been amazing. I’m so lucky I bumped into them, it’s been life altering.” North Sunshine club president and former
women’s coach Rob Telfer said inclusion is what community football is about. Telfer was among those at the Footscray bar the night Smith first met the women’s team. He was honoured to present Smith with her jumper at training recently. “This just shows how far football has come,” he said on the club’s website. “It [football] should be open to everyone, that’s what our club is about, giving everyone a go. “When I got the news I was proud; proud that it is our club that has taken the hard steps to fight to make sure we got a result, the result

The world which was free and easy has been divided by restrictions and radius boundaries. However, being a travel blogger, and a proud Melburnian living in a western suburb, I am giving myself an opportunity to be a tourist in my own city. I enjoyed my lasagne and coffee with some afternoon retail therapy, caught up with some old friends over a glass of wine and did some pub-hopping in Flinders Lane. But it doesn’t have to be a city getaway. No matter where you stay – Sunshine, Broadmeadows, Sunbury, Footscray, Altona, Whittlesea or anywhere in regional Victoria – gift yourself some time to explore the state this summer and help small businesses to survive and bounce back. “New home sales reached remarkable heights in December, nearly doubling compared to the number of sales recorded in November,” reports HIA’s economist Angela Lillicrap. The HIA New Home Sales report – a monthly survey of the largest volume home builders in the five largest states – is a leading indicator of future detached home construction. “This is the second strongest month of new home sales in the 20-year history of the survey, only exceeded by March 2001,” adds Ms Lillicrap. “This surge in sales can be attributed to HomeBuilder as households finalised contracts to build a new home before the December 31, 2020 deadline to access the $25,000 grant. “The extension of the timeframe to commence building from three months to six, which was announced in November, played a significant role in December’s results. “New home sales in 2020 increased by 32.5 per cent compared to 2019. This is an exceptional result, given the nature of the pandemic and the effect that it has had on the broader economy. “It is not expected that this remarkable volume of sales will continue into January. The extension of HomeBuilder to allow contracts to be signed before March 2021 with a grant of $15,000 will support the sales of new homes into 2021, but not at this elevated level. “Low interest rates, improved lending assessment and growth in the price of established homes will also support demand for new homes in 2021. “The monthly increase in sales has been broad-based across the states with

the exception of Western Australia which declined by 9.5 per cent. “Western Australia has been the strongest performing state since the announcement of HomeBuilder and the state government’s Build Bonus grant in June. Despite the underperformance relative to other jurisdictions, the December
results are still elevated compared to previous years, with sales in the December 2020 quarter double the same time last year. “The strength of New Home Sales is a positive sign that home building will support jobs on the ground throughout 2021,” concludes Ms Lillicrap.
Across the country, new home sales in the December quarter were higher in all regions when compared with the same period in 2019: South Australia (188.3 per cent), Victoria (103.1 per cent), Queensland (99.9 per cent), Western Australia (99.2 per cent), and New South Wales (61.7 per cent).

The Melton City Council has prepared Amendment C170 to the Melton Planning Scheme. The amendment proposes to implement the findings of the Development Plan Overlay Review January 2019 which recommends eight of Council’s 16 existing DPO Schedules be removed either partially or in their entirety as they are no longer an appropriate planning control, given the development that has occurred. The amendment applies to significant parts of the Municipality within the suburbs of Brookfield, Burnside, Burnside Heights, Caroline Springs, Hillside, Ravenhall, Taylors Hill and Truganina. Heading in the right direction
By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Jeep Compass has been on sale on-and-off in Australia since 2007 when the iconic American company finally realised that 4WD lookalikes, then being called SUVs, were becoming increasing popular and often being bought in place of conventional passenger cars. Shortly after its launch, Compass was joined by a second compact Jeep SUV called Patriot. Its more rugged looks proved more appealing than the softer Compass which quietly slipped from the Australian import list at the end of 2009. Compass returned in 2012 and now has the compact Jeep SUV field to itself following the withdrawal of Patriot in late 2017 when the current, third-generation version was launched. The latest update, in January 2020, saw a couple of name changes with the previous entry-level Sport now called Night Eagle and the higher-spec Longitude now S-Limited. The four-model range is completed with the Limited and Trailhawk variants.
Engines / tranmissions Night Eagle, Limited and S-Limited are powered by 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol with outputs of 129 kW and 229 Nm. Trailhawk uses a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with slightly less power (125 kW) but significantly more (350 Nm) of torque. Night Eagle is front-wheel drive with a six-speed automatic transmission while the other three variants are driven by all four wheels with nine-speed auto. Jeep, in line with its more serious off-road credential, tags the Trailhawk as a 4x4 rather than AWD. Off-road credentials with Trailhawk include raised ride height and steeper approach, ramp-over and departure angles. Traction in Trailhawk is through the Jeep Active Drive Low 4WD system, with Rock mode added to its Selec-Terrain control.
Styling With so many of its competitors going for sweeping lines and angles it is refreshing to see that, in true Jeep fashion, Compass sticks closer to the utility part of the SUV name. A non-negotiable feature of all Jeep designs is the seven-slot grille. The much smaller version in Compass works really well with the wide

stance of this latest version. In profile, Compass styling looks very much like a smaller version of its larger Cherokee and Grand Cherokee siblings. The Night Eagle which we tested comes standard with an attractive black painted roof and black 18-inch alloy wheels as well as an optional ($1950) dual-pane panoramic sunroof.
Interior There’s a feeling of quality inside the Compass that wasn’t always there. The cabin feels airy and light too which is often difficult to accomplish in a SUV of this size. Front headroom is good despite the optional sunroof in our test car and there’s space in the back to seat a couple of relatively tall adults. There are air vents and USB ports in the rear. Storage space is pretty good. There’s no flat area between the front seats although there is a convenient phone-size alcove at the bottom of the dashboard. There’s also a useful storage box under the front passenger seat which can be accessed by tumbling the base of the seat forward. Perfect for keeping prying outside eyes away from secure items. The 438-litre is one of the biggest in the class and is well shaped with space for a couple of decent-sized suitcases.
Additional features across the range now include autonomous emergency warning and braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic detection, reversing camera, tyre pressure monitoring, trailer sway control, rear parking sensors, hill hold control and two Isofix child seat mountings. The Limited and S-Limited variants add all-wheel drive, front and rear parking sensors, parallel and perpendicular park assist, automatic high beam, adaptive cruise control and disconnecting rear axle. The off-road focused Trailhawk uses an enhanced 4x4 system, off-road suspension, hill descent control, tow hooks and underbody skid plates. It also gets a full-size spare wheel; the other variants have space savers.
Infotainment All models use the Jeep Uconnect system displayed on an 8.4-inch touchscreen monitor with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard in all models. Apart from the usual phone and audio features Bluetooth provides integrated voice control commands. Compass Night Eagle gets a six-speaker audio system, the higher spec models step up to a premium BeatsAudio nine-speaker package that includes a subwoofer.
Safety Jeep Compass gets the now-expected five-start ANCAP rating starting with seven airbags, including one for the driver’s knees, enhanced ABS brakes and stability program.

Driving Getting into and out of Compass isn’t difficult and, unlike some of its small SUV rivals in this small SUV market the front seats are large,
comfortable and with low but supportive bolsters. They proved ideal for a couple of relaxing longish trips that we made. Although there is keyless entry, start-up is through the rare nowadays key-in-ignition method, something that we actually still prefer. There’s excellent visibility in all directions, helped rearwards by a lower headrest in the centre seat. Although nothing exciting, the 2.4-litre petrol engine is more than adequate around town and for motorway cruising. Out on the rural terrain it needed plenty of revs to climb steepish hills and any fast overtaking needed a fair but of preparation. There’s a nice balance between handling and ride comfort and it settled quickly after hitting the occasional pothole. Steering is predictable and responsive. Factory-tested fuel consumption is listed at 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres. We averaged 9.4 L/100 km during our test.
Summing up Jeep Compass is a small SUV with big promise. More than just a far cry from the vehicle it is replacing, its all-round performance and much improved interior makes for a classy act. In an important step forward for those potential buyers concerned about Jeep reliability the company now provides a five-year standard warranty although, disappointingly, the warranty distance remains at 100,000 km warranty.
SPORT Young stars make grade By Michaela Meade Four junior players from the Broadmeadows Basketball Association have been selected for Basketball Victoria’s State Development Program. The program is the first step for players who want to represent Victoria or join an Australian junior representative team. The program will be run at Broadmeadows for athletes from Melbourne’s north-west. Broadmeadows Basketball Association’s Anastasia Gak, Sarah Portlock, Scarlett Robinson and Zachary Thomas said they were excited to begin the training sessions. Sarah described the tryout process as daunting. “When we arrived there I was definitely nervous, because I didn’t know what was involved,” she said. “I was also very excited

because it is just a great opportunity to meet other girls [with] the same passion for basketball, and develop my basketball skills. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to improve my basketball.”
Jets sign key duo The Sunbury Jets have announced the return of two of their biggest stars for the upcoming Big V women’s championship season. The Jets last week announced that Orla O’Reilly and Jacinta Beckley would take to the court this season. O’Reilly has been a star for the Jets, and the competition, in her three seasons at the club, having been named an all-star each year. She was also the league grand final most valuable player in 2018. O’Reilly said she was excited to get back on the court following a year off after the birth of her first child. “I am thrilled to be back with Sunbury for another season,” she said. “After a year away from basketball, it’s so great to be back on the court with the girls. “I’m excited to get started and am looking forward to be competing for another championship.” Coach John White said O’Reilly brings an unparalleled level of creativity and excitement to the team. “Orla’s ability to score when needed, her craftiness on and off the ball, and her ability to facilitate and bring others into the game are impressive but what stands out, even more, is that she is a professional and she lives it. “Her leadership and approach to the game will only help our group grow.” Beckley is another key piece of the puzzle for the Jets. She was part of the team in 2019 and was due to suit up for the 2020 season before it was cancelled. Beckley returned to New Zealand during lockdown and said she was excited to get back to Sunbury after so long away. White said he was ecstatic when he heard that Beckley was keen to return. “Having Jacinta back at the Jets will bring more IQ and stability to our frontcourt, on top of that, she’s been working hard back home and is in amazing shape so I can’t wait to see what the next level of her game look likes.” The Jets kick off their season at home on March 4 against Chelsea. Anastasia said she was surprised when she found out she had been selected for the program. “I had to read the letter a couple of times for it to sink in.” Zachary said he set himself the goal of being selected for the program after the COVID-19 pandemic stopped the 2020 program. “I worked really hard to keep myself fit and to keep my skills up,” Zachary said. “Getting into the program is an incredible opportunity … I get to work with some of the best basketball coaches in Victoria. “Basketball and education go together for me, so it would be great if basketball could help to open up the possibility of studying at a college in the USA.” Scarlett also hopes the program could lead to playing overseas. “I hope to one day play college basketball in America and then see where it takes me from there,” she said.

Bourke returns to Melton New Melton Thoroughbreds men’s coach Lucas Bourke asked many people for help in his previous stint as president at the club. So when the club asked him to step up and take on the role as the men’s Big V coach weeks out from the upcoming season, he was happy to oblige. Bourke’s appointment follows playing coach Chris Johnson signing a deal to play in the Western Australian NBL1 season. “It’s a different place these days,” Bourke said. “I was already back at the club this year coaching my son. It was nice to be in the position to help out. “I then took on the men’s coaching role this season, as I saw that was what the club needed. “When I was president I asked people to step up and when people asked me to, I felt I had to.” Bourke coached at Ballarat and Keilor in his four years away from the club and has coached junior teams for more than 20 years. He has coached both Vic Metro and Vic Country teams to junior state titles. He said while coaching senior teams hadn’t been his ambition, he was excited to take on the role. Bourke has a challenge ahead of him – round one gets under way on March 13. He is still putting a squad together, reaching out to some new and old faces to try and complete the group. Bourke said the loss of Johnson was massive, as there was no one in the squad who could step up in that position. “We’re looking to bring in some new talent,” he said. “We’re looking to make some small improvements to the roster before the season starts. “There’s some old faces, some smart guys, so hopefully that will count for a bit.” Former division 2 competition most valuable player Jeff Crowe returns to the club. Crowe, a championship player with the club, has more recently played with Keilor Thunder. Sam Byron is another key player in the squad. After an interrupted pre-season, Bourke said the biggest focus now was building for the future. “The expectations for this year are about building the program back up and creating a strong foundation. “That’s the number one goal. “If we’re in a position to push for finals, then we’ll look to push for them.” The Thoroughbreds kick off their season at home against Wangaratta North East [formally NE Bushrangers] on March 13.
