A string of local musicians, food trucks and children’s activities will feature at Macedon Ranges Music Festival next month.

Festival founder and director Jimmy O’Hare said the event was a great day for all ages.

“We have two stages, one is the main stage and then we have a youth stage competition,” he said. “We get young musicians perform in a competition and the winner gets a place on next year’s main stage.”

This year marks the festival’s ninth year. Mr O’Hare said the event had come a long way since its inception in 2013.

“My family did a trip to Cambodia and we came back from that wanting to work with the Cambodia Kids Foundation who are based in Woodend,” he said.

“We wanted to raise money for them.

My family and I are big fans of music.

The first few events were in my dad’s backyard.”

Money from the ticket sales goes directly to the Cambodia Kids Foundation.

Lockdown waiting game

By Jessica Micallef Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are eagerly waiting to find out if Victoria will be released from a five-day stage 4 lockdown tomorrow night.

The state was plunged into a “circuit breaker” lockdown on Friday night in response to an outbreak that stemmed from Melbourne Airport’s Holiday Inn. On Monday, Victoria recorded one locally acquired case of COVID-19 and one case in hotel quarantine, bringing the total number of active cases to 21.

Sunbury Business Association president Michael Osborne said the latest lockdown was

another blow for businesses, with non-essential retail closed and restaurants limited to takeaway.

“Some businesses were just starting to hit their stride again and most small businesses cannot afford to be closed down for any given time,” he said.

“There has also been a degree of caution for obvious reasons, people are wanting to avoid those areas so there has been a little bit of hesitancy.

“But the Sunbury and business community have handled it pretty well and are doing the right thing in getting tested.

“It’s an inconvenience but we’ve realised that the sooner we do this, the sooner we get back to

some sort of normalcy.”

Vic Scherri, who owns Sunbury’s Vic’s Food and Wine, said the latest shut down had left him $20,000 out-of-pocket.

He said Valentine’s Day was usually his restaurant’s third busiest day of the year after Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. “This is absolutely horrendous,” he said on Friday.

Mr Scherri said staff morale was low.

“The government is saying it’s [the lockdown] going to only be five days but anything can happen.

“It could be for a week, it could go on for longer.”

were put on high alert last week after a food and beverage hotel quarantine worker at Melbourne Airport’s Holiday Inn visited several sites in the community on February 5 and 6 while infected with COVID-19.

On Sunday, Health Minister Martin Foley announced that the state had more than tripled its testing capacity, with public laboratories capable of processing about 30,000 tests per day.

Youths ‘terrorising the town’

By Jessica Micallef A Romsey resident says he “fears for his life”, claiming a group of youths have been “terrorising the town”.

William Nixon has lived in Romsey for five years. He says for at least three years residents have been verbally threatened and property damaged by a group of youths, who he believes to be aged between 13 and 20.

“There are about 20 of them. They terrorise the whole town and they pose a threat to the community,” Mr Nixon said.

“The group has gotten bigger over the years.”

He has contacted police and Macedon Ranges council but says no action has been taken.

“Police say they don’t have the resources. The whole community is hurting. These kids are bored and angry and we need better services.”

Large said police were aware of the situation and have spoken to community members.

He said police had received reports regarding vandalism in Romsey and at the local skate park. “There is policing activity that has been undertaken to engage with people and to make the community feel safe,” he said.

“Some of the people in the group are known to the local community members. We’ve got a good handle on the situation. We are working with the council to improve the situation.

“We advise anyone with concerns to report it to triple-0 or Crime Stoppers. We do not want people to confront others.”

In a statement, Macedon Ranges council said it shared the community’s frustration with “this small group of people”.

“Council is aware of anti-social behaviour and destruction of property which has occurred at Lions Park Reserve and Romsey Skate Park,” the statement read.

“Council takes community concerns seriously and adapts and responds to changing situations. At the skate park toilet block, gates were installed in order to lock and protect them from vandalism at night.

“Council maintains CCTV cameras and willingly provides footage to Victoria Police.”

Relaying in memory of a friend Jodie Dobbs has been taking part in the Lancefield and Macedon Ranges Relay for Life for seven years. But the 2021 event holds a special place in her heart.

The annual event is a local fundraising movement to help Cancer Council Victoria raise money for vital cancer research, prevention and support programs.

Ms Dobbs’ relay team, Community Bank Carnival, comprises team members from the Lancefield branch of the Lancefield and Romsey Community Bank.

She said her team was relaying in memory of

a staff member who lost her battle to cancer last year.

“Everybody, in some way, has been affected by cancer,” she said. “Last year’s and this year’s event is close to our hearts because one of our crew was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2020 and passed away last year. It was a quick battle. She was courageous and witty. Last year, she cut the ribbon at the relay’s opening ceremony and this year, we are relaying in her memory.”

Ms Dobbs’ team hopes to raise $3000. She said the the relay was a great event to get behind

an important cause.

“Since I joined the relay seven years ago, I have felt so moved by the experience,” she said.

“I take my whole family and I’ve got so much more out of it. The relay for life is one of Cancer Council’s biggest fundraising events and it cannot be underestimated.”

The Lancefield and Macedon Ranges Relay for Life is on Saturday, February 27 at Lancefield Park between noon-10.30pm.

About 350,000 “please explain” notices will be sent by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) to Victorians who failed to vote in last year’s council elections.

The Apparent Failure to Vote Notice is legislatively required to be sent to those who appeared not to have voted in the 2020 local council elections and provides the opportunity to explain why they didn’t vote.

Voting in council elections was compulsory for all state-enrolled and Melbourne city council-enrolled voters as of August 28 last year.

According to the VEC, the 2020 elections had one of the “healthiest participation rates”, despite about 350,000 Victorians not voting.

Electoral commissioner Warwick Gately said it was important for residents to respond to the notice with a detailed explanation.

“This notice is not a fine. It is your chance to explain why you appear not to have voted,” he said.

“Please complete and send the notice back within the 28-day time frame so that we can consider your explanation.”

The VEC may then send an infringement notice and penalty of $83 to anyone who does not respond or fails to provide a sufficient reason for not voting within the 28 days.

According to the VEC, 80 per cent of enrolled Hume residents and 83 per cent of enrolled Macedon Ranges residents voted in last year’s election.

Upgrade takes shape Work is under way to transform New Gisborne Primary School.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas and pupils attended a sod turning ceremony earlier this month to mark the beginning of the school’s $3.1 million upgrade.

The upgrade will include two new music pods for instrumental music, choir and an additional meeting space, the redevelopment of landscaping on Station and Ferrier roads, new seating and waiting areas, the conversion of lights around the school to LED and the modernisation of storm water drainage around the school.

The project is expected to be completed by early 2022.

Over the summer break, a new astro-turf

oval was installed, complete with drainage and line markings.

Ms Thomas said the state government had invested more than $9 billion in more than 1600 school upgrades statewide.

“The exciting works at New Gisborne Primary School are going to modernise this much-loved school and give every student the opportunity to succeed,” she said.

A new school in Gisborne, Willowbank Primary School, is expected to open in 2022.

Upgrades are also taking place at Gisborne Primary School, Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School in Bullengarook and St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School in Gisborne.

Architect appointed Architecture company Gray Puksand has been appointed to design Kyneton High School’s $10.9 million upgrade that was funded in the 2020-21 state budget. The upgrade will modernise the school, including the school’s block J, block I and the science block.

Thousands take up rates relief

By Jessica Micallef Hume ratepayers owed $25.48 million as of December 31 last year, up from $10.01 million owed on December 31, 2019, according to a report tabled at council last week.

More than $13 million is overdue rates from the 2020-21 financial year.

The council introduced a one-time COVID-19 hardship waiver, to the value of $3.1 million, to the 2020-21 council rates, giving

residential property owners a $50 waiver.

All property owners had the opportunity to enter “realistic payment plans” in response to the pandemic and lockdown restrictions.

More than 2800 COVID-19 applications were received between April and December last year. Nearly 1400 applications, totalling $2.45 million, are still active. In the October to December quarter last year, 481 applications for financial hardship were received – 26 per cent of applicants deferred their rates, while 68

per cent have opted for a new payment plan.

Sunbury is in the top five suburbs where residents have opted for an active COVID-19 payment plan, with 171 plans, totalling more than $260,000 in outstanding rates.

Craigieburn had the most active payment arrangements, with 400 arrangements totalling more than $758,000.

More than 170 households in Mickleham took up a plan, in Greenvale there were 148 and Roxburgh Park had 123.

COVID-19 payment arrangements were highest among residential properties, with more than $1.7 million owing to the council.

In March last year, the council placed debt collection activities on hold and will not proceed with further collection proceedings until after March 31. Ratepayers are encouraged to enter into payment plans or apply for short term deferments of their rates if they are impacted

by COVID-19 or are experiencing financial difficulty.

Grant keeps pantry full Kyneton Community House has received a boost to help provide food relief for local residents.

The learning centre has received more than $60,000 as part of the state government’s $5 million Community Food Relief Fund grant program.

The grant will be used for the Food for Good Kyneton program, which aims to increase meal production and delivery capability at Kyneton Community House, and help provide long-term food relief to community members who may be struggling.

Kyneton Community House director Claire Rawlinson welcomed the funding.

“Kyneton Community House could not be more grateful for the opportunity to make all this happen through the state government Food Relief Grant awarded to us,” she said.

“It will really benefit vulnerable people in Kyneton well into the future.”

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said in addition to the Community Food Relief Fund

grant program, the state government was investing $3.5 million to build regional food hubs to increase food relief storage capacity and distribution services in regional Victoria.

“Kyneton Community House do incredible work for our community and this grant means they can continue that vital support for those who may need a little extra support,” she said.

The first concept design for the new-look Gap Road level crossing in Sunbury has been released.

Gap Road will be lowered under the rail line to preserve the character of the heritage-listed Sunbury station.

Construction on the project was brought forward to begin this year, with the level crossing expected to be removed by late 2022, and the remaining works completed in 2023 – two years ahead of the initial 2025 completion date.

About 19,000 vehicles pass through the Gap

Road level crossing each day, with the number expected to reach 27,000 in 2026, according to state government data.

A three-week community consultation period was held in November last year for the public to provide feedback on the design, landscaping and public artworks for the new level crossing.

Sunbury MP Josh Bull said more than 170 residents contributed to the preliminary design.

“The level crossing will be gone for good by the end of 2022, with a road under rail design as promised,” he said.

“This year we will see site investigations continuing as well as some early works, with

the majority of major construction towards the end of 2022.”

The level crossing removal is being delivered in conjunction with the $2.1 billion Sunbury line upgrade, which includes platform extensions, train stabling modifications and rail track power upgrades at Sunbury station to enable bigger and more modern trains to run on the line.

The line is expected to transport up to 113,000 passengers in peak hours every week when the Metro Tunnel is open.

“We promised to remove this crossing by 2025, but this vital project has been fast tracked to synchronise works between the level

crossing removal and the $2.1 billion Sunbury line upgrade,” Mr Bull said.

“It means we will only need to close the line for an extended period of time once, rather than twice, resulting in less disruption and a level crossing-free Sunbury three years ahead of schedule.

“This is a critical project that will improve safety and ease congestion in the heart of our community and it is time to get it done.”

The Gap Road level crossing will be the fourth crossing removed on the Sunbury line and is one of 75 “dangerous and congested” level crossings in Melbourne to be gone by 2025.

Hume chief resigns

By Jessica Micallef Hume council chief executive Domenic Isola has handed in his resignation, just six months into a new four-year contract.

Mr Isola was appointed as chief executive in August 2007 and has been with the organisation for more than 20 years.

The council reappointed Mr Isola to the top job in August last year for another four years.

In a statement to council staff, Mr Isola said it was time to look to the next chapter of his life and explore new work opportunities after taking a break to spend time with family and friends.

Library fines out the door Hume library patrons will be able to return overdue items without fear of being fined.

Hume libraries at Sunbury, Broadmeadows, Craigieburn, Gladstone Park and Tullamarine will no longer charge overdue fines after a 12-,month trail by Hume council.

A report to a recent council meeting stated that library membership numbers in 2020 increased by 71 per cent from the previous year.

The report also stated that loans and renewals of library items increased by 11 per cent during the same period.

“Significant increases in library memberships, loans, renewals and collection turnover indicated a positive trend in community behavioural responses following the removal of overdue fines,” the report stated.

Cr Jarrod Bell said the permanent removal of overdue library fines was an important measure to protect access to serviced and opportunities offered by Hume Libraries.

“Libraries are supposed to be places of access, of learning and opportunity available to all,” he said.

According to a report presented to the council in 2019, Hume libraries issued 46,131 overdue notices in 2018-19.

During the same period, 847 library members did not return any, or some of, their library items.

Students, council in EPIC program

By Jessica Micallef Macedon Ranges council and more than 1300 local primary and secondary school students will team up to help eliminate single-use plastic from workplaces and schools.

The council and students from Hesket Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School Lancefield, Tylden Primary School and Braemar College will join Plastic Oceans Australasia’s Engagement Plastic-Free Innovation Change (EPIC) business program and education program, to help companies eliminate single-use plastics within 12 months.

The education program will equip primary and high school students with knowledge and skills to help drive public awareness about the “global plastic problem”.

The EPIC business program provides step-by-step instructions on collecting data on plastic-use and how to phase out single-use plastic by applying behaviour changes. The Plastic Oceans Australasia team will deliver workshops, provide survey documentation to measure the amount of plastic used, and a database with supply alternatives including environment and cost assessment.

According to Plastic Ocean’s Australasia,

each person in Australia uses about 130 kilograms of plastic per year, with the equivalent of one truck load of rubbish ending up in the ocean every minute.

The company’s executive director, Ricki Hersburgh, said it was more important than ever for people to be responsible and change their habits to help reduce single-use plastic from workplaces, homes and communities.

“Plastic Oceans Australasia is delighted to support Macedon Ranges residents and council staff on their journey to achieving this in 2021 and beyond,” she said.

“If councils and communities are serious

about reducing the impact of plastic on our waterways and marine environments, then they need to start looking at how much plastic they use and begin to find alternatives.

“The EPIC program … provides step-by-step instructions and actions to be able to make a real difference.”

The council’s assets and operations director, Shane Walden, said he was looking forward to the opportunity in helping to reduce plastic waste. “We are delighted that over 1300 local students will be leading the charge to eliminate single-use plastics over the next 12 months,” he said.

CFA cancels market The Macedon CFA Flea Market, which usually attracts “several hundred people”, has been cancelled for 2021.

The decision to cancel the market, scheduled for Saturday, February 27, is in response to COVID-19 restrictions which cap public gatherings at 100 people.

Macedon CFA captain Ross Luke said it was a tough decision to cancel the market.

“We were holding off as long as we could because we weren’t sure what restrictions were going to be like, but it’s too restrictive,” he said.

“We tend to have several hundred people attend the market so the question was how do we do social distancing?

“The only time the market has been cancelled was after Ash Wednesday in 1983.”

The market is the CFA’s primary source of fundraising, with all the funds raised going towards the brigade.

Mr Luke has encouraged people who would usually attend the market to instead shop at local businesses and support the community.

“A lot of businesses have donated items for our markets in previous years so we thought it would be best for the community to shop local,” he said.

“We just want to support the local businesses who have supported the brigade over the years.”

The next Macedon CFA Flea Market is expected to take place on February 26, 2022.

Cash boost for community hub

By Jessica Micallef The new Dulap Wilim Hub in Sunbury will receive $30,000 annually over the next three years from Hume council to assist with its operation.

At a meeting last week, councillors voted to allocate the funding to assist with operating costs including staffing, power, water, electricity, cleaning, security and ground and building maintenance.

In 2017, the council partnered with Sunbury Downs College and Sunbury Heights Primary

School to build a shared-use community facility on state government-owned land, with the project receiving $7.2 million in government funding.

The hub was completed in August last year but due to COVID-19 restrictions, was unable to open its doors.

The multi-purpose facility includes shared community spaces comprising of a dedicated playroom and outdoor space, three meeting rooms, flexible multi-purpose space that can be configured to up to four rooms, a community kitchen, toilets and informal meeting spaces.

The shared community space will be managed by Sunbury Heights Primary School, with programs to commence this year.

There is also a two-room preschool which will be managed by council, with services expected to begin this year.

Sunbury Downs College will also manage the teaching kitchens to deliver the school’s home economics program.

Jacksons Creek ward councillor Jarrod Bell was nominated to be part of the newly formed Dulap Wiliam Hub governance committee.

He said the new centre would be a

“one-stop-shop” for community facilities and services.

“I call this a unique space,” he said.

“What it will provide … is access almost catered to our environment with preschool and kinder facilities being provided within the centre itself.

“The fact that there is going to be three very core different zones within the facility is absolutely exciting.

“The commercial-style kitchen space … will provide state-of-the-art hospitality training opportunities.”

Search for volunteers The Sunbury Toy Library is on a hunt for volunteers.

The toy library is jampacked with toys, with children up to eight-years-old able to borrow everything from puzzles and bikes to games and train tracks.

Library president Sheralee Smythe said a lot of the toys were donated by the community.

“We also get government grants to help with the operation costs, so most of our toys are donated or are sometimes purchased through grants,” she said.

“Our toys are great for kids up to eight years and there are some great games for families that can be played by everybody.”

Due to COVID-19, the library has had to switch to a click and collect service, where library members reserve toys and pick them up the next time the library is open.

Ms Smythe said the library has had to reduce its opening hours from two days a week to one

day because it doesn’t have enough volunteers.

“Our committee has returned to work and there is no one else trained,” she said.

“We’ve had a bit of interest from our Facebook posts, which is fantastic, but we are looking to get a lot more people trained up.”

Ms Smythe said volunteers didn’t need to commit to a “huge amount of time” to helping out at the library.

“It can be anything – as little as doing one library session one hour per term,” she said.

“It depends on your availability.”

Force of nature studied

By Benjamin Millar Moorabool and Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to share their thoughts on the value of nature in their day-to-day lives.

A research team formed via collaboration between Deakin University and Land for Wildlife is studying engagement towards biodiversity conservation, conducting a survey focusing on participants’ relationship with nature.

Researcher Anne Eichholtzer said the survey aims to understand the potential health and economic benefits associated with interacting with nature and conserving biodiversity in the region.

“All participants get into a draw to win $100 vouchers, and we expect their contribution to provide valuable insights for research and Victoria’s biodiversity strategy,” she said.

The Deakin University PhD candidate said the survey is suitable for anyone to take part, not just people who are already passionate about nature. “The gap we are trying to fill with this survey especially is to understand the benefits to individuals of interacting with nature, to see what kind of correlations there might be,” she said.

“There has been some studies, but one of the bigger gaps is most of the people already have a very strong connection with nature and are very engaged with nature, so we want to reach out to people who don’t necessarily have that.”

Ms Eichholtzer said the study will hopefully shed light on how to better engage people with nature and see if this can flow on to better care for natural habitats and biodiversity conservation.

Works help meet growing demand Western Water has started work on upgrades to the sewer pump station in Rotary Park.

The pump station ensures efficient movement of sewage through Western Water’s network for treatment at the Gisborne Recycled Water Plant.

The upgrade will cater for increased sewage flow due to residential growth in the area and will reduce the risk of system failure to ensure an uninterrupted service to Western Water customers.

Western Water’s chief executive Graham Holt said the $500,000 project was important to meeting an increased demand for sewage services in the area.

“This upgrade will help us manage increased sewage flow from the growing population,” he said.

“It will also result in an improved and more efficient system … will also help lower energy consumption, therefore reducing our carbon footprint.”

During the upgrade, the site will be fenced off. Pedestrian access to Rotary Park will be maintained during construction. The project is expected to be completed by April.

Western Water is also in the process of upgrading the Gisborne Recycled Water Plant with early works and cultural heritage studies under way. The plant treats sewage from Gisborne, New Gisborne, Macedon and Mount Macedon.

MY PLACE Bernadette Joiner was presented with the Arts Ambassador Award at Macedon Ranges council’s Australia Day ceremony last month. She spoke to Jessica Micallef.

What is your connection to the Sunbury and/ or Macedon Ranges?

As a young child my favourite place to visit with family was Mount Macedon, where we had barbecues and picnics at the Cross. I’ve also taught at many schools in the area during my career. My husband and I have lived in Sunbury, Gisborne, Macedon, and more recently at Riddells Creek, where we purchased Dromkeen Homestead eight years ago. My main focus is now my work at Dromkeen.

What does winning the Arts Ambassador Award mean to you?

I see it as a wonderful opportunity to further raise awareness of the incredible potential of the arts to enrich the lives of people in Sunbury, Macedon Ranges and beyond. The award is an encouragement for me to continue trying to make a difference by creating community connections through shared, rich, arts-related experience and provide opportunities people may not normally have access to.

Tell me about your passions.

My passions are my grandchildren, my family, children’s literature, illustration, art, story telling, children, the elderly, science, teaching and my faith.

Tell me about the Dromkeen property – what do you offer there?

Dromkeen is a marvellous National Trust homestead with a wonderful history. It is a jewel in the heart of the Macedon Ranges.

At Dromkeen we have a children’s bookshop and a fabulous gallery where we’ve hosted the works of artists from the Macedon Ranges and also some of Australia’s finest contemporary children’s book creators. We run school and adult programs focusing on writing and illustration, a variety of art workshops, story readings for children on the first Saturday of

every month, storytelling evenings for adults, book launches, author-in-residence afternoons, musical performances, tours for groups, school holiday programs and more. Dromkeen also has a lovely tearoom that is open from Wednesday through to Saturday each week, as well as a conference centre.

What do you love most about it?

Dromkeen enables us to make a difference in people’s lives in lots of different ways. It’s the feedback I receive from people that has really blessed me. I have loved watching children from disadvantaged areas be inspired to enter our Dromkeen Mark Wilson Writing Competition and seeing their delighted faces as they got to meet a real author/illustrator at Dromkeen. It’s been a delight watching people’s enjoyment and seeing their confidence grow.

Are there any challenges?

One of the key challenges is getting the message out there. Another challenge is the cost of transport to get schools to Dromkeen. The cost of buses, even from Sunbury, sometimes limits who can come here. I would love to have some kind of central fund that schools could apply to, to assist with funding transport costs.

Finally, the upkeep of the property and the garden is a big job. It would be great to have a volunteer gardening group that would come to Dromkeen for a few hours a week just to keep the weeds at bay.

If you could change one thing about the area, what would it be?

I love Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges, so it’s not so much what I would change but I would love to see more awareness education to promote respect, acknowledge and understand our traditional landowners and the rich Indigenous cultural heritage we have in the area.

A headline act Jenny Carland’s family has witnessed the evolution of news – from stacks of daily newspapers and magazines to news at your fingertips with online services. The Nextra Sunbury Newsagency has navigated the changes and remains a vital part of the community. Jenny reminisces with Jessica Micallef and chats about what’s next …

enny Carland is proud of the legacy her family will leave in Sunbury.

For nearly nine decades, a member of Jenny’s family – from her grandparents to her own children – has been behind the counter of the Nextra Sunbury Newsagency.

Her grandparents William and Ellen Davies purchased the store from Mr and Mrs Gaulton in 1932.

Nearly 20 years later, Jenny’s parents Ron and Glenise Geyer took over ownership.

“We were the hub of the community,” Jenny said. “Newspapers and magazines were massive back in the olden days. When I was a little girl, we also sold bikes, toys, we had a little library, we used to sell fire crackers, cakes, ice creams and milkshakes, footballs and football jumpers.

“I still have one those scoops for the ice cream with the wooden handle. We sold anything.”

In nearly 90 years, four generations of Jenny’s family have worked at the store.

Jenny started working there full-time in 2004, before she and her husband Gerald took ownership in 2015.

“In 2004, we had two beautiful staff members who had never taken long service leave. I thought I could take a year off teaching so that they could take long service leave … and I’ve been here ever since,” she said.

After Jenny’s dad passed away in 2010, she considered selling the family business but she said newsagencies were declining and they couldn’t sell it.

“The banks weren’t loaning money for the newsagency because they could see the decline and it wasn’t worth it,” she said.

“Ever since then, I have been making changes.”

At a time when technology was evolving and news was made easily available online, Jenny decided to pivot her business in a new direction.

Now the newsagency sells gifts, clothes, accessories, homewares, books and cards, as well as traditional newspapers and magazines.

It’s also a TattsLotto outlet and has sold 30 division one-winning tickets since 1972.

“Whatever wasn’t in Sunbury or what people were asking for, I developed it into my store,”

Jenny said. “It’s been really successful, and people have loved it.

“Newspapers and magazines are still important but it’s just changed because you can get your news anywhere.

“You get news alerts on your phone … people still like to have a physical paper or magazine, so we still do sell quite a few but we used to have rows and rows of magazines.”

Jenny has decided now is the time to take a step back from the family legacy and retire, and has sold the business to a new family.

She said she was proud of what her family had achieved over the many years.

“It’s a really big job to run a business at this size and that is why it’s time for me to retire,” she said.

“I want to be there to look after my grandchildren. I want the simple things now.

“My grandparents and parents would be really proud of me and I love that. I don’t feel like I am letting anyone down.”

Jenny will hand over the helm to the new owners on March 1.

Nissan Murano 2005 - 2015

By Ewan Kennedy,Marque Motoring Nissan Murano SUV was ahead of its time in styling and didn’t sell as well as it deserved in this country. But times have changed and these days many SUVs and crossovers have smoother lines that look quite swish.

Murano has stretch-out room for four adults.

Three grown-ups in the back works fine if they aren’t overly broad in the beam. Four have stretch out space.

As a real bonus the flat floor at the rear seats makes life easy for the person seated in the centre. Too often they have to sit with their legs splayed around a central tunnel, but not in the big Nissan.

The first Muranos arrived Down Under in September 2005. They gained strong acceptance by experts and some potential buyers because they were powered by a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine based on that in many upmarket Nissans. This gave plenty of performance and made Murano quicker, smoother and more refined than most others in this class with fourcylinder power.

The second-generation Murano, introduced here in January 2009, carried the same overall theme as the original shape.

However, it sat on a new platform that gave it added rigidity and a quieter ride. Seating was even more spacious and the boot had significantly more volume.

The 3.5 V6 was reworked to give it more power and torque. Its excellent smoothness continued to impress.

The second generation has an emphasis on a luxury look and feel, making it a complete move away from the sort-of sporty appearance of the first-generation.

selected ratios to give the driver a fair degree of manual control when they don’t agree with the computer’s decisions on the best ratios.

The European-based suspension system provides handling characteristics that are pleasant enough, but the Murano is certainly no sports wagon and may disappoint drivers who anticipate more from its sleek appearance.

Nissan has been in Australia since way back in the Datsun days of the 1960s so there are many well established dealers throughout the country. As is common, these are mainly in metro areas, but the strong Nissan commercial vehicle range means there are quite a few in the bush and country towns.

Murano is a complex car and we feel that anything other than simple service items are best left to professional mechanics.

Servicing and maintenance that have been carried out according to the book can be a strong selling point.

Insurance premiums are usually in the same range as other standard SUVs, so charges are

pretty reasonable. There isn’t a huge variation from company to company. While we say it pays to shop around, make sure you compare like for like. It’s also wise to have a long history with one insurer as this may stand you in good stead if there’s a marginal claim.

What to look for Make sure the engine starts easily and idles almost imperceptibly from the moment it’s running. Ideally this should be done after the engine is completely cold, overnight is best.

During your test drive check that the continuously variable transmission seems to be in the right ratio for the situation.

There were some reliability problems in early CVTs. See if this is recorded in the service records.

Look for oil leaks from engine, CVT and transfer-case joints.

Check the complete interior for signs of damage caused by bored kids.

Audi freshens up S4, S5 range

By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Audi has capped off a busy year with the release of upgraded versions of its S4 and S5 range.

Like the A4 / A5 models on which they’re based the S4 / S5 range has five model variants: S4 sedan, S4 Avant wagon, S5 Sportback hatch, S5 Coupe and S5 Cabriolet.

The model upgrade has brought a boost in technology including a new infotainment system together with a number of design enhancements.

Styling Although their body shapes mirror the A4/5 the ‘S’ models are easy to distinguish with different bumpers, air inlets, side sills and rear spoiler and diffuser trim. Double, twin tailpipes and red brake calipers add the final touch to the sporting story.

The refreshed S4 sedan gets new lighting designs, new grille and significant bodywork changes.

S4 Avant adds aluminium roof rails and powered tailgate and luggage cover.

The three S5 variants have 20-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels.

Interior The interior is stylish and restrained with a sense of practicality and a driver-friendly centre console and virtual cockpit. The S sport front seats are of soft Nappa leather and are heated with adjustable side support and a choice of three different massage modes.

There are matt brushed aluminium inlays and stainless-steel pedals.

Engine / transmission All S4 and S5 variants are powered by a turbo-petrol 3.0-litre V6 which can deliver 260kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

Acceleration times range from zero to 100km/h from 4.7 to 5.1 seconds.

All models come with Audi’s permanent quattro all-wheel-drive system including a self-locking centre differential and adaptive damper control. The 60/40 standard rear-wheel bias, can send up to 85 per cent of the power in either direction as needed.

The optional quattro sport rear differential provides even more dynamic driving qualities by splitting torque between the wheels of the rear axle.

Bluetooth connectivity is simple and intuitive and you also get Apple Carplay and Android Auto, as well as DAB+ digital radio.

Driving The words ‘Sport’ or letter ‘S’ can set off alarm bells for older and less supple drivers because they can mean access problems and cramped interior space. Fortunately, there are no such problems with the Audi S4 and S5, including the coupe and convertible S5 variants.

There is good head and legroom, even for taller backseat passengers, with the larger door openings allowing for easy entry and exit.

The instrument cluster display can be switched between a ‘hockey stick’ rev counter with a digital speedometer or standard twin conventional dials.

We were able to drive both the S5 Sportback and S4 sedan during the launch drive program which took us on a round trip from the south-west of Sydney down through the Southern Highlands.

The tried and proven V6 engine is engaging and responsive and blends perfectly with the eight-speed automatic transmission allowing the engine to operate close to its ideal load point. With up to 500 Nm of torque over a wide rev range (1370 to 4500 rpm) there’s plenty of flexibility for relaxed driving.

Braking is excellent with more ability than you will probably ever need in everyday situations.

Standard adaptive dampers mean you can choose from Comfort, Auto and Dynamic settings.

Ride quality is a good balance between

comfort and performance. The occasional bumps, inevitable on the rural roads that dominated the test route, were handled easily even when we came into some without warning in mid-corner.

We’ve been able to jump the queue and get into an S4 Avant as soon as it arrives in Queensland in early January and so we can expand our opinions with our usual week-long review. This will include much more urban driving than we did on the launch program.

Summing up Audi S4 and S5 models are on sale now. With five different body styles Audi S4 / S5 offers something for everyone. As is the case with many European premium marques Audi has remained with the old three-year, unlimited kilometre standard warranty.

Make a SMART resolution

how and why you are going out for a walk. It’s measurable – you can measure your average resting heart rate at the start of January, then again at the end of February to mark any achievement.

It’s achievable – if you can comfortably already walk 2-3km, then 3km on work days is achievable for you. Of course, you’d set the goal distance shorter or further, depending on your starting point. Either way, the goal needs to be something you know you can do.

It’s realistic – by walking on work days, you are being realistic with your time, rather than

A new year brings new beginnings – and often times, the desire to set new year resolutions for your health and fitness. These resolutions come with good intentions, and for the most part are a great stepping stone to making some great improvements in your lifestyle.

But, how many times have you set a health or fitness-based resolution with a strong start through January and even into February, only to have your motivation and desire to see it through peter out by March or April?

This is why setting a goal, one using the SMART technique, can be much more effective – and you’ll be more likely to succeed in achieving your goal than you might a long-term resolution. For the simple reason that a SMART goal has clear outcomes and clear steps for achievement.

Let’s look at a typical fitness-related new year resolution, and turn it into a SMART goal.

‘In 2021, I am going to walk every day’ – this resolution has great intentions, but it is not clear on how far you’d walk, nor why you want to walk every day. It’s end point is 12 months away and has an easy failure point – a missed walk one day.

Instead, let’s reword this into a SMART goal.

‘During January and February 2021, I will walk 3km before work, on work days, to help decrease my resting heart rate’.

But, just how is this a SMART goal?

It’s specific – the goal is very clear on what,

setting yourself up for failure by expecting to walk every day. It allows for the ups and downs of day-to-day life.

And it’s time-bound – the goal has an end point (in this case, the end of February). Doesn’t two months feel much more achievable than 12? The shorter time frame here allows you to reassess at the end of the two months to work out if you want to increase distance or days for the next two months.

Importantly, this goal also outlines why you are walking. If you want to dig a bit deeper into why you have set a goal, then ask yourself

‘Why?’ three times and see if that gives you a clearer picture. Why do you want to improve your fitness? Why do you want to improve your health? What would achieving your goal mean to you?

The more specific you can be with yourself about your health and fitness goals, the greater chance you have of achieving them.

Of course, you will need to work at it. But having the specifics of your goal written down somewhere will give you a reference point if the going does get tough – and help you to continue with it.

SPORT Former AFL player joins Roxburgh Park

The chance to play football with his three nephews has led Collingwood premiership player Ben Johnson to Roxburgh Park Football Club.

The Magpies last week announced Johnson, who played 235 AFL games for the Pies, had signed on with the club for the Essendon District Football League division 1 season.

Magpies coach Michael Farrelly said it was exciting to get someone of Johnson’s calibre at the club. Johnson retired from the AFL at the end of the 2013 season.

Farrelly said he believed it was the first time that Roxburgh Park had a former AFL player at the club.

“It’s been in the works since before Christmas,” he said. “He [Johnson] did a session on Wednesday and looked good and looked fit. He hasn’t played properly in the last few years, but his knowledge, experience, skills and stories will help 10-fold.

“His ability to play the game hasn’t gone away. Wednesday was the biggest number of people we’ve had at training in my four years there.”

Farrelly said the conversation for the move to Roxburgh Park started between Johnson and his nephews and went from there. When it was put to the club, there was no hesitation.

Zac, Luke and Nathan Reichelt have all joined the club in recent years. The 2021 season is set to be their first one together at the Magpies.

Farrelly said they hadn’t spoken about how many games Johnson may play.

Johnson has most recently played superules football and was planning to continue this year to keep fit.

Johnson is the third former Collingwood player to sign with EDFL division 1 sides for this year, including “ratpack” member Heath Shaw.

Kyneton raring to go

By Tara Murray Sporting competitions came to a screeching halt at the weekend, with Victorians back in stage 4 COVID-19 lockdown.

All weekend matches for both juniors and seniors were called off, and training cancelled until Thursday at the earliest, following the state government’s announcement on Friday.

Under stage 4 restrictions, outside exercise is limited to two hours a day per person within five kilometres of your house and with a maximum of two people or members of your house. Gyms and sporting facilities are closed, along with sporting clubs.

Among the competitions affected are the NAB League Girls football competition, a number of cricket competitions, Bowls Victoria pennant, Baseball Victoria competitions and the Country Basketball and Victorian Junior Basketball League competitions, as well as local domestic competitions for a number of sports.

Some cricket competitions had finals scheduled for this weekend.

Many competitions had started seasons later than usual due to last year’s lockdown and were running restricted seasons. All of last year’s winter sports seasons were completely cancelled in Melbourne due to lockdowns.

The Gisborne and District Cricket Association pulled the pin on all matches on Thursday, a day before the premier’s announcement, in response to several locations in Sunbury being identified as high risk locations, including the Sunbury Shopping Centre.

The competition has junior and senior teams across Sunbury, the Macedon Ranges, Melton and Moorabool.

GDCA president Rob McIntyre said cancelling one round of cricket was better than cancelling a whole season.

“This is not just a Sunbury COVID issue.

Many people from Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne, Riddell, Romsey and the wider area work, shop or go to school in Sunbury,” he said.

“We don’t know how many of these people have visited the exposure sites and we certainly don’t know how many have been tested and have self-isolated waiting for their results.

“The potential is there to shut the whole area down for weeks again should the virus spread into these communities.

“We are not prepared to put the health and safety of our cricket participants and members of the wider community at risk.”

McIntyre said they would review health authorities advice following the weekend and then consider if matches can resume the following weekend.

Sunbury Basketball Association continued its competitions, but with changes to condition of entry and spectator numbers expected for weekend matches.

A year off hasn’t halted the momentum of the Kyneton Netball Club.

After slowly rebuilding their netball program in recent years, the club is this year set to field a full set of sides in the Bendigo Netball League for the first time since 2016.

Netball director Julie Priestley said they were keen and positive ahead of the season, which is set to start on April 10.

“It’s the best year we’ve had for quite a few years for trials, which is quite positive,” she said.

“There’s a lot of opportunity and we’re looking to have five teams.

“We haven’t had under-17s for nearly five years.”

Tylah Marchbank has been reappointed coach of the A-squad. She was set to coach for the first time last year before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

She will be a playing coach, returning from a knee injury she suffered in 2019.

Priestley said Marchbank, who has plenty of experience, had fitted in well.

She said the A-squad, which would include the club’s top two sides, would have a few new additions this season.

While keeping the new arrivals close to their chest, Priestley said the club was aiming for a finals berth for the A-grade team with much of the 2019 side returning. Among those are the Mangan sisters Rachelle, Jessica and Brooke, and Michelle Fletcher.

“We’re looking similar to other years with a few new players coming in,” Priestley said. “They play extremely well as a team and are just in sync with each other. We just missed out on finals in 2019, our first year back in A-grade.

“We’re aiming for finals.”

Priestley said they had good numbers for their B-grade and B-reserve teams, but were still looking for a coach and assistant coach to look after those teams.

Former A-grade coach Di Guest-Oakley is coaching the under-17s.

Priestley said Guest-Oakley and former netball director Cara Grambeau had done a lot of hard work in recent years to get that side back up and going.
