Pricing under the pump By Benjamin Millar Melton’s petrol prices are coming under greater scrutiny with a local MP vowing to help take action to bring prices in line with neighbouring areas. Melton MP Steve McGhie said the area’s families are being unfairly hit with higher prices than people in neighbouring suburbs, often paying more than 20 cents per litre extra at the pump and spending at least $10 more every time they fill up. “I have had many constituents raise concerns regarding the prices of petrol in Melton being noticeably higher than in other areas,” Mr McGhie said. “I am deeply concerned that families in Melton are paying more than they should be.”

Mr McGhie said he has taken the issue up with the Consumer Affairs Minister Melissa Horne and will be contacting federal Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor to discuss this issue soon, as fuel prices are regulated by the federal government. “In the interim I strongly encourage residents to complain to the ACCC [Australian Competition and Consumer Commission]” he said. The ACCC’s latest petrol monitoring report showed that average petrol prices rose in the 2020 September quarter after a record low earlier in the year. Although the ACCC does not set fuel prices, it does monitor retail fuel prices on a daily basis. A spokesperson said it has the power to investigate where it sees issues of concern. “Where we find sufficient evidence we will take action to protect consumers against misleading and anti-competitive conduct by fuel retailers.” Mr McGhie’s promise to take action was widely welcomed on social media, where some residents said they had seen price differences of up to 50 cents per litre between Melton and Watergardens.

Melton’s Andre Peters said the lack of independent competition makes it easier for the major fuel companies to keep prices inflated well above those in neighbouring suburbs. “Sadly there is no competition in Melton as there are no independents,” he said. “Generally we pay at least 20 cents a litre more at times in Melton.” A BP spokesman said petrol prices at the pump can be impacted by a number of different factors.

He said while there are currently about 1400 BP branded sites across Australia, about three quarters are owned by independent business partners who set their own retail pricing. “When it comes to retail fuel pricing, our aim is to be competitive and attract customers to our sites,” he said. “Generally speaking, the price at the pump is impacted by a number of different factors. In particular, international product prices and competition between service stations in a local

area. There are also other factors including exchange rates, taxes and local operating costs.” On Monday, unleaded 91 pump prices at Melton’s BP, Coles Express and 7/11 Mobil were all at 155.9 cents per litre, according to price comparison website Petrol Spy, with Woolworths Caltex at 168.9. Meanwhile Bacchus Marsh BP, Coles Express and 7/11 Mobil prices were 129.9 cents per litre – 26 cents less per litre – and independent outlets were just 119.9 cents per litre. 628174

Heavy rain keeps SES busy By Benjamin Millar Heavy rain has caused havoc across Melton and Moorabool as almost a month’s worth of rain dumped on the area last Friday. Melton State Emergency Service volunteers responded to 23 calls for help, working through until to midnight to deal with flooding and building damage. Bacchus Marsh SES was active throughout the day with 15 volunteers dealing with 13 flood and storm-related callouts prompted by flash flooding as more than 60 millimetres of rain fell in parts of the area.

Volunteers were also involved in the successful search during torrential rain for a hiker who had been missing in the Lerderderg Gorge since Thursday. Search crews encountered tracks that had turned into streams as water levels in the Lerderderg River rose quickly. The SES received more than 500 calls from across the state in the 24-hour period, many in the western suburbs and state’s central-west. The emergency response comes on the eve of the Bacchus Marsh SES Unit’s annual fundraiser. A spokesperson said the fundraiser allows

the unit to buy equipment, replace vehicles, conduct training and pay for petrol. “The funding we receive in our annual unit subsidy covers roughly half of our annual expenditure, hence fundraising is important for us.” As COVID-19 has put a hold on the usual doorknock fundraiser, the unit will instead set up COVIDSafe collection points at the Bacchus Marsh headquarters at 11 Gisborne Road from 10am to 4pm this Saturday, February 6. School welcomes first pupils As preps and their parents across Melton and Moorabool processed first-day jitters and excitement with the return of the school year, one local school in particular could be forgiven for experiencing more than its fair share. Eynesbury Primary School opened its doors last week for the very first time, years of planning coming together as the school welcomed pupils from prep to year 6. Land sales are booming at Fraser Rise’s newest estate thanks to a busy Christmas period. Strong interest from buyers across December resulted in 17 lots in the boutique Kerani Heights estate being sold. Potter George Group’s project manager Scott Payten said there had been more interest than normal over the holiday period across a number of their estates. He said about 110 of the 190 lots in Kerani Heights had now been snapped up. The estate is a short drive from Watergardens shopping centre and Central Shopping Centre, schools, medical centres, national parks and public transport. “It’s been really busy,” Mr Payten said. “The inquiry level has been really high as well as the market has shown strong growth. “The level of sales and inquiries was a lot more than what we would normally have in the lead-up to Christmas.” Landscaping works on 2.5 hectares of parkland at the estate is also under way. Work on the $3 million intersection at Beatty’s Road and Melton Highway is expected to start next month, which will make connecting to the Melton Highway easier for those in the Fraser Rise community. Drugs and firearm charges A 38-year-old Melton South man has been charged with a range of offences after allegedly being found with a sawn-off shotgun and drugs at Crown casino. Police conducting a routine patrol in the casino carpark spotted a man sitting in the driver’s seat of a white Hyundai about 3.45am on January 24. A search of the car allegedly located a sawn-off double barrel shotgun, ammunition and a substance believed to be cocaine. Further checks revealed the car was allegedly a stolen vehicle. The man was remanded in custody to appear at a court on February 9.

An online seminar for people living with Parkinson’s aims to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease. Brooklyn’s Pam West, who founded the ParKanDo peer support group for people living with Parkinson’s in Melbourne’s west, said the disease didn’t define people. “The focus for us is about busting perceptions and myths around capacity of people with Parkinson’s to engage and contribute within the community,” she said. “People seem to view someone with shakes or someone whose speech is impacted by the condition as not having the capacity to do things. We’ve had members refused service in hotels because they had the shakes.

An 18-year-old Melton motorcyclist has been charged with 26 offences after leading police on a high speed chase across Melbourne about 10pm last Wednesday. The man, riding a black and green Kawasaki motorbike with no plates, approached a police vehicle that was heading to an illegal hoon event in Dandenong South and allegedly kicked it several times before performing a ‘mono’ and taking off. The police helicopter followed the rider, who entered the Monash Freeway and reached alleged speeds of 180km/h. The rider exited the Western Freeway and got off his motorbike on Smith Street, Melton where he was arrested. Former captain remembered By Benjamin Millar Flags have been flown at half-mast at the Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade station to mark the passing of former brigade captain Steve Arandt. The father-of-four and popular local locksmith died on January 17 after a long battle with cancer. Mr Arandt was a current member of the Parwan CFA after previously serving more than 20 years at Bacchus Marsh, including a stint as brigade captain. His father Pat

Arandt had also served as captain, lieutenant and foreman of the brigade in the 1970s. Mr Arandt’s legacy in the brigade now continues with his wife Kerry and son Ricky also current members. A Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade spokesperson said the brigade was saddened to learn of Mr Arandt’s passing. “On behalf of the officers and members of Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade we would like to thank Steve for his service to Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade, the Bacchus Marsh community and the wider CFA community.”

The Bacchus Marsh Football & Netball Club also paid tribute to Mr Arandt. “Steve was a lifelong member of the Bacchus Marsh Football & Netball Club and will be dearly missed by all,” the club posted on social media. “The Cobra family extend our thoughts and condolences to Kerry, Luke, Travis, Ricky and Michelle.” A funeral service was held at the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall on January 23 and Mr Arandt has been laid to rest at the Maddingley Cemetery.

Council offers jobs lifeline Almost 200 Victorians left jobless when the COVID-19 crisis hit have been thrown a lifeline working with Melton and Moorabool councils. The state government’s $500 million Working for Victoria program, established at the height of the pandemic, matched workers in hard-hit industries with employers looking for labour across a range of jobs and duties. More than 100 Melton locals have been matched with Melton council, working in locations such as Melton Botanic Garden, Arnolds Creek and Stony Hill Creek. Council operations manager Brendan Sell said the council has filled 122 six-month roles in total. “The staff are working in outdoor maintenance, environmental management, waste management, graffiti prevention, cleaning, data collection and administrative

duties,” he said. Mr Sell said the program has created new jobs that are needed to provide critical services across the area in response to COVID-19. “Not only is the program helping to address a service delivery need in the local area, but it’s providing much-needed employment to people whose job opportunities have been significantly impacted by the pandemic,” he said. “We’re very pleased to be partnering with the Victorian government on this important initiative.” Moorabool council was also involved in the program, creating more than 50 local jobs. Ballan residents steal the show By Benjamin Millar Moorabool Shire Council has announced three winners of the 2021 Australia Day Awards. Revealed at the Australia Day ceremony held at the Public Hall in Bacchus Marsh last Tuesday, the honours went to a trifecta of recipients from the close-knit town of Ballan. David Nickels was honoured as Citizen of the Year, Keeley Johnson as Young Citizen of the Year and Ballan WinterKnits as Community Event of the Year. Moorabool council chief executive Derek Madden said Mr Nickels, who runs a local travel company, has been actively involved in the community since moving to Moorabool in 2012. He joined the Ballan Chamber of Commerce in 2013, becoming the vice president in 2015, and became chairman of the Moorabool Business Awards in 2017. “Dave has donated bus transport to many Moorabool organisations including the seniors to Ballan and football clubs, and been involved in raising funds for the Ballan Hospital, Ballan Pony Club, Ballan & District Preschool, Ballan Football Club, Ballan Scouts, Ballan CFA and many other local organisations and groups,” Mr Madden said. “He was also instrumental in bringing the San Jose Marching Band to Ballan, who were the current world champions, and after marching in the streets of Ballan entertained the children at the Gordon and Myrniong primary schools.” As the COVID-19 pandemic hit the community in 2020, Mr Nickels began delivering medication to those in need, transferring people to and from medical appointments and shopping, and assisting with the delivery of food and groceries. with autism and an intellectual disability, was recognised as Young Citizen of the Year for her extensive advocacy and fundraising. She is the founder of Keeley’s Cause, a Ballan-based charity supporting children with additional and special needs. Mr Madden said Keeley has raised much-needed funds to help distribute iPads to many young people to help them learn, communicate and interact in mainstream and specialist schools. “She has created and held a number of events

including Christmas parties, Easter Egg hunts and giving days in Ballan and across the shire,” Mr Madden said. “Keeley’s empathy and compassion in assisting others sets a remarkable example for others in how to assist those in need. “She ensures the inclusion of those less fortunate with disabilities and encourages them to be all they can, despite their disability.” Ballan WinterKnits was honoured as the Community Event of the Year for providing an opportunity to brighten the streetscape of

Mr Madden said the event achieved much more than this, as it encouraged locals and visitors to Ballan to walk the main street and enjoy the bright colours, humour and creativity along the street. “A treasure hunt was developed to provide a family activity over school holidays, and to give families relief during COVID-19,” he said. “The event showcased what Ballan has to offer, encouraged regional tourism and supported local businesses,” Mr Madden said.

Council bid for sports loans By Benjamin Millar Melton council is seeking a $7.8 million loan to fast track two new sporting pavilions and a new sports field. The council is applying to the state government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme, hoping to borrow $4.5m for the development of a rugby and gridiron field and pavilion at MacPherson Park and a further $3.3m for development of a pavilion at the Melton Recreation Reserve. The loan would come from the second round

of the state government’s $100 million scheme. A council report backing the submission notes that the projects were identified as priorities under the council’s capital works program and sport facility demand strategy. “The projects are currently in or entering the design phases that are consistent with the program guidelines and criteria,” it stated. The loan scheme aims to prioritise investment that will increase sport and recreation participation, addressing gaps in community sport and recreation infrastructure provision. Local governments are invited to

apply for projects valued between $500,000 and $10 million. Successful applications receive a low interest loan and interest payments are subsidised by Sport and Recreation Victoria by 50 per cent. The rugby and gridiron development at MacPherson Park will replace the existing

relocatable rugby pavilion and involve construction of a third field to support rugby league, rugby union and gridiron at the one site. The Melton Recreation Reserve Pavilion Project will involve the delivery of a new multi-purpose community pavilion to replace the existing outdated pavilion. “The new multi-purpose facility will provide a female-friendly all accessible sporting pavilion,” the report states. Successful applicants will be announced in April and construction must start by June next year.

Plants protect wetlands A wetlands located within a Truganina estate will become home to more than 160,000 indigenous plants. Stockland has unveiled a plan to revitalise wetlands located on the corner of Clara Avenue and Kirkpatrick Boulevard in Mt Atkinson, where about 8000 residences are being built. The wetlands will act as a natural filter and treat storm water before it enters Skeleton Creek, which flows into Port Phillip Bay. The list of indigenous plants selected for the wetlands, which was developed in consultation with Melbourne Water and Melton council, have been selected specifically to attract native wildlife. Mature trees have also been retained around the wetlands, which provide a home to birds including wedge-tailed eagles. The new plantings will support other birds living in the western region, including 330 species such as the country’s smallest bird, the

weebill and one of the largest, the brolga. Stockland project director Ed Krushka said boosting the wetlands’ plant life would play a big part in future-proofing the local environment for generations to come. “We’ve worked closely with Melbourne Water and our local indigenous community to ensure that we are not only revitalising the area but we’re also playing a role in educating the local community about the heritage and importance of the area,” he said. Melbourne Water’s Ken O’Neill said the project would contribute to the organisation’s vision under the Healthy Waterways Strategy, to protect and improve waterways across the western region. A pathway and vantage points will be constructed in the wetlands, so Mt Atkinson residents can access the site. The wetlands will open to the public mid-year.

New life for old cricket gear By Tara Murray A Taylors Lakes family has launched a charity aimed at providing second-hand cricket gear to Australian families. The Brasher family had plenty of cricket gear it no longer needed, and was keen to pass on the items to other families so they could be put to good use. When they couldn’t find a charity or organisation that donated secondhand gear, they took matters into their own hands and started 2nd Innings Cricket. Mum Nicole said both her sons had amazing experiences with sport and they wanted to give others the same opportunity.

Dylan and Aidan started their cricket careers at Taylors Lakes and now play for Footscray in Victorian Premier Cricket. That’s why advocating for fuel to be priced at an affordable level is critical for our community.

One of the most pressing issues I see affecting our municipality right now is the high price of fuel. While Council is not responsible for local petrol pricing, we do share our

Many people who live, work or study within our community are already disadvantaged with limited access to public transport. As a result, we are more reliant on cars to attend work, school and recreational activities.

We know retailing costs and pump prices can vary between towns, reflecting local competition, freight and operating conditions, however I would certainly like to see fuel prices fall in-line with those of surrounding areas and will continue to do whatever I can in this space. Any household that has their bins collected by council is eligible for these waste entitlements. By Benjamin Millar More than 300 new jobs will be delivered to the Melton area when global retail giant Amazon Australia opens a huge new local distribution centre next year. Amazon Australia announced on Friday it will open a second Melbourne fulfilment centre in Ravenhall in late 2021, creating about 200 jobs during construction and 300 ongoing roles on completion. The new centre in Dexus’ Horizon 3023 estate will be 37,000 square metres – almost double the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground – and capable of holding up to six

million items. The new centre will be Victoria’s second Amazon site, joining Dandenong South, and helping Amazon more than double its local operating footprint. Amazon Australia operations director Craig Fuller said the new site will enable Amazon to expand its range and speed up shipping to local customers. “We’re proud to have played a unique role in supporting our Victorian customers during this unprecedented time, helping them to get the items they need for their families without leaving their homes,” he said. “Furthermore, we are dedicated to

enriching and giving back to the communities in which we operate and we look forward to working with Melton City Council, and the surrounding schools and local community groups, to create impactful community programs.” Melton council chief executive Kelvin Tori said having Amazon in Ravenhall would benefit all involved, including local residents. “Amazon’s decision to base its new fulfilment centre here makes great business sense and is a massive win for local jobs growth,” he said. “To have an industry leader and major employer like Amazon invest in the City of Melton demonstrates the outstanding

opportunities our city’s prime location and highly skilled workforce provides. “As one of Australia’s fastest growing cities, it’s investment like this that will strengthen our economy and help ensure more local families can find work close to home.” Economic Development Minister Tim Pallas said Amazon’s investment in a second fulfilment centre is providing welcome new job opportunities in a suburban growth area. “We welcome this investment as a clear indicator of confidence in the state and attracting investment from significant global companies, such as Amazon, is critical to drive our economic recovery,” he said.

Behind the iron fence One of the west’s historic gems, home to rare flora and fauna behind a corrugated iron fence, will this weekend open to the public for the first time in a year. Goya Dmytryshchak reports.

he Truganina Explosives Reserve at Altona reopens on Saturday for World Wetlands Day and on Sunday for guided tours. Once used to store explosives for civilian use such as mining and quarrying, the reserve operated from 1901-62 and is home to flourishing wildlife untouched for decades. The reserve includes the keeper’s residence built in 1897, underkeeper’s quarters from 1915, 16.5 hectares of salt marsh and sand dunes, remnants from the magazine, an explosive testing shelter and tramway lines used to transport explosives. Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society treasurer, Ralph Coghill, said the group began restoring the keeper’s quarters more than five years ago. “We’ve now commenced restoring the underkeeper’s, and during all of that time we’ve also been maintaining and improving the heritage ornamental gardens,” he said. “We’ve also established a demonstration vegetable garden.” The site has a new boardwalk winding around a water-storage tank, built in case of fires, and former laboratory buildings. “This place was used for the storage and distribution of explosives for civilian use, so things like dynamite and gelignite,” Mr Coghill said. “Explosives were taken out of here on the trams and there was a pier that went straight out into the bay – it was 100 metres longer than the existing Altona pier. “The fence is a very important part of the heritage of this place. “During the First World War and the Second World War, the military did commandeer the place and the fence along Queen Street was painted in camouflage paint.” Hobsons Bay council’s conservation team leader Frank Fardell said his vision was to return the site to a sheoak forest, providing a habitat for diverse species of animals. “I think what people would find surprising is, there’s five species of micro-bats that have been recorded within the reserve,” he said. “These are small bats that would fit in the size of your palm and they feed on mosquitoes and moths and beetles. “They don’t necessarily all live in caves … a lot of them live in fissures of bark.” The site also attracts the rare Altona skipper butterfly and leads to the Cheetham Wetlands, which is internationally recognised under the Ramsar environmental treaty and is home to more than 200 bird species. Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre is hosting events for World Wetlands Day, on Saturday, February 6, from 11am-3pm. For details, visit the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre page on Facebook. The reserve, at 274 Queen Street, Altona, will be open on the first Sunday of each month for guided tours from 1-4pm, starting Sunday, February 7.

Sherene Magana-Cruz, a COVID-19 survivor, reflected upon how lucky we are to live in this great country and its first class medical system with its dedicated health workers. It was the first opportunity church members have had to gather as a group to join in a meal and socialise since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Out and about A long-term strategy to liven up the heart of Melton has delivered a series of striking public artworks for passersby to enjoy. Norm Fenn’s Clocktower in the Courthouse Square is perhaps the best known, erected in 1999 following a public art competition. The design, styled upon a rearing thoroughbred and a harness sulky, aims to reflect the rich history of both thoroughbred breeders and harness trainers in the shire. Anderson Hunt’s Unearthed series of sculptural forms has been spread throughout the town centre since 2017, anchored by the rough diamond element near the library. Street murals are also adding welcome splashes of colour throughout the area. If this is your usual MO for the day to celebrate love, then why not try something different this year and have an active Valentine’s Day? There are many ways you can enjoy an active day with those you love, and organising a walk with a picnic could be one of the most simple! If walking is not really your thing, then why not relive your youth and go roller skating? There are still rinks around Melbourne – just be sure to check if you have to book ahead and bring your own skates or blades due to current COVID-19 restrictions. Even just half an hour of blading or skating will have you feeling invigorated, and give you that burn in your legs! Another great indoor activity for an active Valentine’s Day is rock climbing. This is a lower impact game than tennis – and you could check out whether or not the bar really does have 1975 prices.

By Tara Murray There’s plenty of excitement at the Altona Basketball Association as the Gators field a Big V women’s side for the first time since 2017. Having focused on the youth league women’s side in more recent times, the club now has the players to reform a women’s side. New coach Cameron Wilkosz said after some hard work behind the scenes, they were set to go. Wilkosz’s basketball journey is a well travelled one, with a role as lead assistant coach for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Alberta Canada, WNBL Bendigo Spirit Academy head coach and head coach of the Bendigo Braves Victorian Youth Championship Women. “They had a few rough seasons and decided to focus on the kids,” he said of Altona. “There’s a lot of talent coming through the club. “It’s a credit to the club and who they are.

Now there’s kids travelling the world and playing at college.” Wilkosz said his experiences coaching against the club’s youth league side made it a no-brainer to apply for the women’s role when it came up. He’s of the view that the players who are stepping up into the women’s side are more than ready. “Randy Shanklin [coaching director and youth league women’s coach is an amazing coach and the opposing coach I was most close with,” he said. “Altona is a really good club. Altona just doesn’t put on the best spread after the game, they are a friendly club. “The kids are looking for feedback from opposition coaches. You didn’t get that at Bendigo. “I wanted to be a part of that.” Wilkosz said he had a certain way of coaching and the playing group was starting to adjust to his ways. He had been impressed by the team.

City signs key players Hume City has announced two key signings and a re-signing as it aims to remain at the top of the National Premier League ladder. Undefeated in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19, City has again put together a strong squad. Last week it announced the signings of Jordan Maricic and Aden Gardner. Maricic, a former Adelaide United youth product who joins from Adelaide City, will partner Hayden Tennant in Hume’s defensive line-up. Gardner joins Hume from fellow NPL side Bentleigh Greens. He spent part of 2020 playing with the Brisbane Strikers while there was no soccer being played in Melbourne for much of last year. The midfielder brings a wealth of experience and has a keen eye for goal. The club also announced the re-signing of Theo Markelis. A fan favourite, Markelis has found the back of the net on plenty of occasions for Hume. The signings will help fill the gap of five players departing in the off season. Captain Harry Monaghan is the biggest name to depart, along with Paul Wilson, Gideon Sweet, Will Hendon and James Kapuranovski. Coach Nick Hegarty stated on the club’s Facebook page that everybody was trying to get back to where they were this season. He said this year was a new season, the league had changed and they had to look forward. The club is in the middle of its pre-season, having played a number of games including one against Melbourne Victory.

“After watching training, they’re not a team that will just float around.” Wilkosz said they would have a ‘one club’ mentality, with players from the youth league squad to be part of the senior side every week. “The idea is to use it as a stepping stone.“ Wilkosz said that not only were they excited by the two Big V teams but there was more talent coming through. He was expecting big things of the players coming through and they could see more players joining the college system. Wilkosz said the first aim this year for the women’s side was to get the side back up and develop a solid foundation. “We want to be more than competitive. Win, lose or draw it’s about being the toughest team on the court.” The Gators play their first practice match this weekend and are keen to get crowds back after COVID-19 forced the cancellation of Big V last year. The club is also looking for sponsors, for the team and players.

Kangaroos add experience The Sunbury Kangaroos has added some experience to its squad ahead of the Essendon District Football League division 1 season. Kangaroos coach Leigh Sporle said the club lost a number of its 2019 division 2 premiership players. “We have a pretty young list,” he said. “These guys we have gotten in for this season are proven players. “We have a good mix, but we still want to focus on the youth.” The Kangaroos have announced six new signings in the past couple of weeks. Ferras Merhi, Saad Saad and Sammy Saad are no strangers to the EDFL. Merhi has been a dominant ruckman for a number of teams, having won a premiership at Roxburgh Park and Hadfield. He will take the pressure off premiership ruckman Brenton Sutherland. Saad Saad is a well-known goalkicker, having kicked more than 900 goals in 10 seasons playing with Seymour. He has previously played in the EDFL. Sporle said in hisplast season, Saad kicked plenty of goals despite playing more in the midfield. Sammy Saad is also a premiership player at Hadfield and Roxburgh Park and will add something up forward. All three have previously played together. This week, the Kangaroos announced the signings of Nathan Davidson and Blake Henderson. Henderson has played with both Romsey and Melton Centrals in the Riddell District Football League. He can play back, forward or in the ruck, adding some flexibility to the side. Davidson will add another key target up forward. He has been playing in BlackRoad in recent seasons but is known to many Sunbury locals having played for Romsey previously. Another former RDFL player, Mark Freeth, who was set to join the Kangaroos for the 2020 season, has committed for 2021. Freeth was a key player for Diggers Rest for a number of years. Sporle said the club was still in talks with a couple of other players but had nearly completed its recruiting. This will be the Kangaroos’ first season in division 1 after last season was cancelled due to COVID-19. The group started training last week.
