Champion for women By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown woman who has received an Australia Day honour for significant service to women with ovarian cancer has recalled her own diagnosis, which brought heartbreak but also gratitude. Paula Benson, who formerly chaired Ovarian Cancer Australia, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 34 in 2003. “I know I am one of the very lucky ones because my GP did all the right things for me,” Ms Benson said. “When I went to her, I had this unexplained abdominal bloating, changes in my urinary and bowel habits and I felt really full after eating not very much.

“She sent me straight off that morning for a transvaginal ultrasound and she got me in to see a gynaecological oncologist that night and I had the surgery the next week. “No one thought that I would have ovarian cancer because I was young, I was 34 – largely, it’s women in their 50s, 60s, 70s who are diagnosed – and I have no history of ovarian or breast cancer in my family. “So, no one suspected that it could be ovarian cancer; they could see that I had a large cyst attached to one of my ovaries and that the ovary was damaged and that the cyst and the ovary would need to be removed. “When I woke up, my gyne-oncologist told me that she was very sorry but she’d found ovarian cancer and had to undertake a radical hysterectomy. “It was very shocking for a young woman to have that experience but I know my cancer was diagnosed early, it hadn’t spread and I know how lucky I am.” Ms Benson said she knew her story was not typical for most women with ovarian cancer, which prompted her to offer her services to Ovarian Cancer Australia in 2006. Isabella with the help of a surrogate mother and a separate egg donor. “I do have a beautiful daughter,” Ms Benson said. “She’s 14 now. “I was very fortunate. One of my girlfriends donated eggs and another girlfriend carried her for me, so I’m very lucky to be a mum.” On learning of her Australia Day recognition, Ms Benson said she hoped it would raise more awareness of ovarian cancer. “When I first found out about it I felt quite

emotional really thinking about everything that we at Ovarian Cancer Australia have achieved over the past decade,” she said. “But I was just reflecting today, the same week that I found out about potentially receiving the award, I heard about another friend of mine who’s just been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer and it was very grounding. “We’ve achieved so much, we’ve done so much and I’m so proud of that but there is still so much more to do and we can’t rest until it’s

done.” Ovarian Cancer Australia said under Ms Benson’s stewardship the organisation had achieved significant milestones, including developing and implementing Australia’s first national action plan for ovarian cancer research, securing $3 million federal funding for the Traceback ovarian cancer prevention program and the commitment of $20 million for ovarian cancer research from the federal government’s Medical Research Future Fund.

Locals swimming against the rubble Altona beachgoers say work carried out at a popular swimming spot known as Flemings Pool has left behind debris, some of it dangerous. Nine months ago, Hobsons Bay council cleaned Flemings Pool to a depth of 70 centimetres to remove debris following construction of a new pedestrian ramp. Lifelong Altona resident Peter Weaver said beachgoers had found “metres and metres” of black plastic, reinforcing steel and other rubble. “It’s concrete rubble and rubble from the construction,” he said.

“We all grew up there, we used to bury ourselves a metre down in the sand and dig holes and it was a pristine little beach. “Now, you need a pair of rubber-soled shoes to walk out into the water.” Fellow local Joanne Mathrick said sharp building waste and concrete rubble was constantly being found. “I swim every day there,” she said. “You’re tumbling over rocks, so it’s really annoying. “I’ve been picking up some bits of the reo (reinforcing steel) that have been left behind. “It’s building rubble that’s been left behind.

When they demolished the orginal ramp that was there, the rubble that’s come out of it, the contractors have left it behind.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council was monitoring the site for debris. “Recent storms and high waves have resulted in debris being washed up onto the beach from the ocean, including bricks, bottles, concrete, rocks and seaweed,” he said. “Our beach cleaning crew attends Flemings Pool at low tide several times a week to clear the area.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Child abuse charges laid

A Laverton woman has been charged with possessing child abuse material after allegedly downloading a graphic video using a social media app. The woman, 24, is scheduled to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on March 26 for a commital mention. The Victorian Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team, comprising Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police officers, arrested the woman on December 16 after conducting a search warrant at her Laverton home. Her mobile phone was seized as evidence. It is alleged the woman had graphic child abuse material after downloading a video online via a social media platform. AFP Commander Todd Hunter said Australian authorities and their international partners remained committed to holding alleged offenders accountable for their role in horrific crimes against children. “If you are downloading and sharing child abuse material you are complicit in the sexual abuse of children and the lifelong harm it causes,” he said. Anyone with information about people involved in child abuse and exploitation is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. An online report can also be made to alert the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, which in the past financial year received more than 21,000 notifications. Anyone impacted by child sexual abuse and online exploitation can access support services at www.accce. gov.au/support. Kingsville has recorded Australia’s fourth-highest growth in unit values and was greater Melbourne’s No. 1 property performer last year, with suburbs in the city of Maribyrnong dominating Melbourne’s top 10. Kingsville experienced 16.6 per cent growth in unit values, pushing the median price to $520,063, according to CoreLogic’s Best of the Best report of Australia’s top performing suburbs for 2020. Bringing Westgate ‘back to life’ By Goya Dmytryshchak Westgate Sports and Leisure Complex at Altona North is undergoing a $2 million renovation. The centre boasts Australia’s highest indoor rock climbing facility and will this year launch 3x3 basketball and a 25-metre swimming pool. It also has a reception centre, ball park, childcare centre, two martial arts centres, a beauty salon, trampoline park and licenced function room. Business manager Greg Jury said the 32-year-old centre had needed an update, with

the refurbishment largely carried out during last year’s COVID lockdowns. Mr Jury said the Nicolaou family, which built the complex in 1988, had wanted to restore the complex to its former grandeur. “We made a decision in January of last year to do the refurb … and then COVID hit, which kind of gave us a window to spend the time, without having the public in there, to do the refurb a lot quicker,” he said. “We’re going through the process now of putting new assets into the facility and bringing it back to life,” he said.

“We started off with the heartbeat of the facility, which is the gym in Westgate Health Club – rebranded it, refurbished the whole facility. “We spent $500,000 on fixing the gym up … We also refurbished the cafe and the common zones and we’re putting new assets and new tenants into new sites into the rock climbing, beach volleyball, adding a new asset in the 3x3 basketball. At the end of this year, we’ll be putting in a 25-metre swimming pool.” Westgate Health Club is offering foundation membership from this month.

Central portal for kinder A central portal for families to register for three- and four-year-old kindergarten was launched this week in Hobsons Bay. From next year, the state government will fund three-year-old kindergarten for a minimum of five hours per week. Currently, only four-year-old kindergarten is subsidised. It is estimated that in 2022 there will be 1405 eligible three year olds and 1389 eligible four year olds in Hobsons Bay. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said he felt strongly about early education, and the central portal would simplify registration. “Studies consistently show that two years of kindergarten is better than one,” he said. “The research points to better social and cognitive skills, exam performance and emotional outcomes for those who attended kinder for two years, and from 2022 all of our youngest minds in Hobsons Bay will have that opportunity. Council, together with the state

government, will ensure families and children in Hobsons Bay have access to high quality education and care programs. “Having the registration process all part of one easy portal will make it accessible and simple for families to sign up. “As the parent of a three-year-old, I feel strongly about the importance of education in the early years and encourage all parents and carers to register their children for the kindergarten program.” Kindergarten accessed through long day care will need to be applied for through the individual centres. A video helping parents and caregivers to register has been translated into Arabic, simplified Chinese, Hindi, Karen and Punjabi languages, and is available on the council’s website and social media channels. Community key for top citizen By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona North doctor on the front line of the fight against COVID-19 has been named Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year. Mukesh Haikerwal, whose medical practice last year became the first GP respiratory clinic testing for coronavirus in Melbourne’s west, said the pandemic had brought the community together. “What it has shown me is how important community actually is,” Dr Haikerwal said. “Being embedded at the very beginning of this contagion, we were getting everybody prepared with making the environment safe.

“As we went through the year, we kept trying to keep people appraised of whether they had the illness or not with the testing and then we went through the phase of industrialising it. “Then we had the terrible time of the positive cases, and in our backyard our own spikes. “Marshalling the community is what saved us – with the city council, with the local doctors, all the health services … and the community bought in … they did all the right things. “And because it was a community effort, we made a big change. … An individual doesn’t do this … the community comes together.” The former World Medical Association

chairman and Australian Medical Association president said the next part of the journey would be getting people vaccinated. “We need to not wait to be told what to do, we need to organise ourselves to do whatever needs to be done so that we’re ready to act as soon as the button is pressed,” he said. On being named the municipality’s top citizen, the Williamstown resident expressed gratitude for the community. “For me, this was being part of the community where we’ve chosen to live, raise the kids. We’ve been through quite a lot,” Dr Haikerwal said. “I can only thank people for their support

Wildlife warrior An environmental volunteer who aims to raise awareness of the municipality’s “precious wetlands” has been named Hobsons Bay Young Citizen of the Year. Newport’s Melissa Sheedy volunteers with the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre, a community group that aims to establish a purpose-built centre near the world-recognised Cheetham wetlands in Altona’s backyard by 2025. “It’s RAMSAR recognised, so it’s internationally recognised as significant,” Ms Sheedy said of the wetlands. “We want to build a centre for people to come down and appreciate it while also preserving the wetlands. “I hope that with this award, our wetlands … will be recognised for their timeless beauty, and the critical role they play in our ecosystem

can be appreciated.” Ms Sheedy’s voluntary role as the centre’s social media co-ordinator involves sharing information with the community to help “grow their appreciation for the environment”. “I actually never knew of the wetlands prior to living here,” she said. “Our goal is to reach out to a wider audience.” Ms Sheedy, who is studying environmental science, wildlife and conservation biology, said she was “very surprised” at her civic honour. She praised last year’s citizen of the year, Marilyn Olliff, who she learned had nominated her for the award. “She’s actually the founder of our wetlands centre,” Ms Sheedy said. “She’s such an inspiration. I’m so grateful that my work is being recognised … it means a lot to be acknowledeged.”

Master drummer honoured By Goya Dmytryshchak One of Australia’s leading teachers of traditional drumming, Maidstone’s Ray Pereira has been awarded a Medal of the Order (OAM) in the Autralia Day honours for service to the performing arts as a percussionist, performer and composer. Sri Lanka-born Pereira counts introducing different types of percussion to the Australian community, and popularising it, among his most significant contributions. “Because we are living in a country like Australia, in those days there was limited exposure to other cultures, for example there was no Latin band or salsa band whereas now you’ve got all these communities that have built up,” he said. “I was always a firm believer that music is not just something that comes from an individual – it is actually part of a community.” Pereira has recorded and performed with some of Australia’s biggest names including Paul Kelly, Yothu Yindi, Archie Roach and Christine Anu. He has composed and performed percussion tracks for films such as The Dish, The Talking Drum, Shake Hands With The Devil and Maalu, and been a backing musician on TV for artists including Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Billy Thorpe, and Chubby Checker. Pereira started teaching drumming to adults in the mid ’90s and runs workshops in Footscray, Fitzroy and Brunswick. He says teaching students at Footscray Primary School, Derrimut Primary School and Kororoit Creek Primary School at Burnside Heights is something he is most proud of. “As I went along, I started thinking that I should impart this knowledge to younger generations,” Pereira said.

“So, I think that was my most important contribution – that I started teaching. “Footscray Primary School is my local school, and I got into that by accident. “I was looking for a place to hold my drumming workshops for adults and I went over to see the principal and the business manager with a view to hiring their hall … and then the principal called me and said you

can hire the hall but we’re not going to charge you – how about you run some classes for the grade sixes.” Pereira runs student study tours to Ghana and Sri Lanka and financially supports students and musicians in these countries. His other work includes being vice-president of the Moreland City Band and a guest lecturer in master drumming at several universities.

A refugee from the 1956 Egypt Suez Canal crisis, Mr Said fled to England with his wife and their baby daughter before the family migrated to Australia in 1962 as “Ten Pound Poms“. Mr Said, who received a Medal of the Order of Australia, said that 59 years ago he was “the only Greek in Altona who could read and write English”. “So, I became a secretary, I became a submission writer, I actually developed a constitution,” he said. He has held the position of “resource person“ with the Greek Orthodox Community of Hobsons Bay since 1962, and was partly responsible for acquiring the land on which today sits the biggest Greek Orthodox church in Melbourne’s west. Mr Said’s honour recognises his extensive voluntary community involvement and commitment to multiculturalism and community building.

Truck ban push ramps up By Goya Dmytryshchak Brooklyn community groups have joined forces to demand an urgent upgrade of Millers Road and a future truck ban between Geelong Road and the West Gate Freeway at Brooklyn. Brooklyn Residents Action Group and Don’t Destroy Millers Road have written a joint letter to relevant ministers, requesting that trucks be banned from entering or leaving the West Gate Freeway at Millers Road, Brooklyn, when the West Gate Tunnel is completed. Studies conducted by Hobsons Bay council predict 11,800 trucks per day in Millers Road, Brooklyn, when the tunnel is built, the letter states. It states Brooklyn residents will be enclosed between Geelong Road and the West Gate Freeway “and a totally congested Millers Road, all spewing out vehicle exhaust gases, with access in and out completely blocked”. “Already there have been calls by some members of the Brooklyn community to commence a civil disobedience process to stop the trucks entering Millers Road to signal to the state government of the plight of this long-suffering community whose concerns have been disregarded,” the letter states. The letter also points to a report commissioned by the state government, which recommends trucks use Grieve Parade and Boundary Road. The report, Air Pollution in Melbourne’s Inner West - Taking direct action to reduce our community’s exposure, recommends redirecting trucks “to protect the health and amenity of the Hobsons Bay community”. A government spokesperson said the Department of Transport was attempting to balance the needs of residents and the trucking

By Goya Dmytryshchak Australia’s most elite troops say this Remembrance Day the COVID-19 global pandemic has shone a different light on the meaning of sacrifice. Recently retired SAS Major Mark Bainbridge, who spent most of his 22 years’ service in the special forces on multiple tours to the Middle East, said this year had brought into perspective the meaning of real hardship. “I think Remembrance Day this year helps keep perspective on things,” the Newport RSL member said.

“If you think back, all those generations, and saw the commitment and sacrifice they made over a number of years … they were so resilient. “I think, in the light of today’s current global crisis, it really helps me keep perspective on current times versus some real hardships that people have been through before.” Major Bainbridge said he also reflected on those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “I’ve had a lot of my mates and colleagues killed in action,” he said. “Of the 41 Australians who have lost their lives overseas in the last few decades, I do know a lot of them and their families.

“So, I usually get in touch with their families and let them know we’re thinking of them.” Fellow Newport RSL member, Lieutenant Rebecca Hogan, followed her parents’ footsteps into the British navy full-time in 2002. She transferred from the UK military into the Australian navy in 2013, predominantly flying helicopters off the back of ships. “In the UK, we don’t have Anzac Day so Remembrance Day is our primary day to remember our war heroes and the armistice,” she said. “I do have many generations of family in the forces so, for me, remembrance revolves around family.

“I’ve been the one away deployed but I’ve also been the child with the parent deployed and seen the struggles that mum went through. “When dad was away doing his bit, she had to step up and be both parents to two children. “So, for me, Remembrance Day is as much about remembering the sacrifices that families have made in sending their loved ones away to the campaigns, as much as the service of the individuals themselves. “I think being ADF helped me cope with COVID a lot more … I remember my dad saying to me when we went into the first lockdown, just treat it like a deployment.”

Project helps tackle self-harm By Tara Murray Three western suburbs hospitals will be among the first in Australia to benefit from a new monitoring system designed to provide up-to-date data on self-harm presentations in emergency departments. The system is being developed by researchers at Orygen and will provide critical information on who is presenting with self-harm, their methods of self-harm used and the treatment they received. Western Health’s Sunshine, Footscray and Williamstown hospitals are among seven hospitals that will have the

system in the initial roll out. Associate Professor Jo Robinson, who heads Orygen’s suicide prevention research, is the project lead. She said that unfortunately, rates of suicide are still increasing among young people. “Self-harm also appears to be increasing and is a key indicator of future suicide risk as well as being associated with other adverse outcomes,” she said. “Many young people who engage in self-harm don’t seek professional help, but when they do, emergency departments are often a first port of call, and many young people report

substandard responses from staff when they present there.” Associate Professor Robinson said the period following discharge also represents a time of elevated suicide risk. “To date, there is limited high quality data that exist on rates of presentation to emergency departments for self-harm and how it is treated,” she said. “These types of self-harm monitoring systems have been developed elsewhere in the world but this is the first of its kind in Australia, bringing us in line with international best practice.

“Ultimately, we hope it will lead to far better outcomes for young people who self-harm.” Once fully operational, the self-harm monitoring system will provide accurate and timely information on all self-harm presentations to participating emergency departments. The research is supported by funding from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, The William Buckland Foundation, and Future Generations Global. Gift draws crowd More than 400 people to date have entered the Maribyrnong Gift, which is the only local event of its kind after COVID-19 shut down the Keilor and St Albans gifts. The event is being held at Braybrook’s Pennell Reserve on January 31. Victorian Athletic League organiser Terry O’Donnell said the Maribyrnong Gift was one of a circuit of 14 gifts for the year, culminating in the Stawell Gift. “It’s been running now at this venue for six years,” he said. “It’s a handicapped event … it gives everybody a chance, from the poor runner to the good runner, to compete.” O’Donnell said anyone from age 11 to veterans could enter. “There’s people competing in their seventies,” he said.

“Males and females can compete against each other, as well as have their own races. “The beauty of it is, the young and the old can compete against each other, and the good runner against the average runner and be competitive.” O’Donnell said the Maribyrnong Gift had managed to continue due to securing funding from Maribyrnong council. MY PLACE Footscray’s Jinghua Qian is a writer, poet and critic. They speak with Goya Dmytryshchak.

What do you like about Footscray? Arts and culture, food, the river, and the fact that most of my friends live around here and it’s still relatively affordable for somewhere this close to the city that’s got good public transport. I don’t think there’s anywhere else in Melbourne where I’d feel so comfortable as a queer person of colour. I can find an amazing new outfit at Savers, get it altered at a tailor in the arcade, go to a pottery workshop, get a haircut, buy a live fish to cook for dinner, and roll up to a queer Lunar New Year party all within a couple of blocks. What would you change or what could be improved? More public housing, public toilets, bike paths and support for community languages (like keeping the Vietnamese bilingual program at Footscray Primary). On a selfish note, I wish there was a Shanghainese restaurant and that there were more places to get a late-night snack. What’s your favourite local cafe/restaurant and why? For breakfast, silts and a coffee at Konjo is the perfect way to start the day. For lunch or dinner, Afghan Master Kebab is my go-to: Their chicken is amazing, as is the whole fish. I’m also a fan of the lamb skewers at Karlaylisi, the banana burger at Kulan Eatery, the fish and

pickle soup at McDumpling and pretty much everything at Small Graces. You can tell I spend all my time thinking about food. You’ve worked with Liz Crash to create Underfoot, a series of virtual audio tours uncovering the secret histories of Footscray. Could you please tell me about that? Liz and I have been friends for nearly 20 years and we both love Footscray, the internet, and trawling through the archives for century-old gossip. We basically thought, what if we made a local history walking tour, but we were really upfront about our interests in queers, feminists, migrants and activists, and we put the whole thing online as both text and audio so people could access it in different ways from home. So, that’s what we did. A lot of people have written in with their own stories, which is the best part because the whole project is really about showing that everyone can be part of writing history. Chasing a world record By Alesha Capone Point Cook’s Kiko Dos Santos is on a mission to beat the world record for doing the most muscle-ups in a row. Mr Dos Santos, a former fitness model who has competed in Australia, Italy, and Thailand, said he quit the sport when his best friend passed away in 2016. But after experiencing mental health issues which resulted in constantly feeling negative during the past few years, he re-discovered his love of fitness during the pandemic lockdown last year. Mr Dos Santos said his wife purchased exercise equipment to help them “keep sane” and work out at home. He also took up his old hobby of calisthenics, using fitness stations located within Point Cook parks. Beating the world record for muscle-ups – which are usually performed on a chin-up bar or gymnastics rings – didn’t cross his mind until he realised he could easily complete about 20 in a row, which is only six below the world record. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the highest number of consecutive muscle-ups reached is 26, which was achieved by Maksim Trukhonovets in Belarus in 2018. Mr Dos Santos said he believed he would need to undergo another seven to nine months of training before he could attempt to conquer the record. In the meantime, he has recently made a challenge via social media to keep himself motivated. “I challenge anyone one-on-one in person, if they manage to beat me I will give them $250 in cash, if they lose, they give $50 towards a mental health organisation of their choice.” Details: @KikoDosSantos on Instagram

Pocket park for Footscray A pocket park to be built at the corner of Warde and Whitehall streets in Footscray has received $1.3 million state government funding. Maribyrnong council has developed a concept plan for the new park, which includes three lawn areas, an extensive garden bed and trees, seating on a raised concrete wall and benches, and a sheltered picnic space. There will also be a sculptural play element on a rubber surface. The park is among 13 new spaces and five off-leash dog parks to be established with a $15 million government contribution announced on Sunday. Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the COVID-19 pandemic had highlighted the importance of neighbourhood parks. “The pandemic has brought into sharp focus the importance of open green space close to home and these new parks will deliver just that, building on our reputation as one of the world’s most liveable cities,” she said. “These parks will create local jobs while they’re being built, boost surrounding local businesses and provide social, health and wellbeing benefits for families and their pets for years to come.” Maribyrnong council nominated the site for the new park, which is part of the Joseph Road precinct development. Bingo with an active twist By Alesha Capone An innovative plan to develop an “exercise bingo” game for senior citizens in Wyndham has received a $10,000 grant. IPC Health’s plan to create a modified game of bingo, named binGO MOVE, has been allocated funding under the Heart Foundation’s 2020 Active Australia Innovation Challenge. The challenge asked tertiary institutions, schools, councils and other organisations to submit ideas for projects to get people moving. binGO MOVE was one of 10 winners

The five arrests were a culmination of Operation Jumbuck, which began on January 4 after Australian Border Force officers detected an illicit substance inside a consignment of meat smokers. Paws For A Purpose (PFAP) chief executive and veterinarian, Dr Mark Kelman said that local vets and cat rescue groups have reported deaths from the virus in a number of areas including Deer Park, Altona, Point Cook and Newport in the past month. Dr Kelman said Feline Parvo is a highly infectious and devastating disease that can kill both kittens and adult cats, with unvaccinated felines at a higher risk of catching the disease. Signs of Parvo disease in cats and kittens include lethargy, lack of appetite, diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration, and immune-suppression. “This current outbreak has been especially deadly with near 100 per cent fatality in the last month,” Dr Kelman said. “Kittens can die as quickly as in 24 hours, often without even showing any clinical signs first. “What is most worrying about this recent outbreak is the number of kittens affected in such a short time. “Although most cases in December were in rescue kittens, it is highly likely the virus is circulating in cat populations across Melbourne and pet cats – especially kittens – are at a high risk of the disease if they are not fully vaccinated.” The origin of the outbreak is unknown, however, it is suspected that kittens brought in from regional areas may have seeded this latest outbreak. Dr Kelman said there was concerns that vaccination rates in cats and kittens across Melbourne may have dropped in the past 12 months, due to the COVID lockdowns. Tara Murray

The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on the importance of having a safe and secure place to call home. Access to high quality public and social housing is essential so that no one in our community gets left behind. I’m so proud to be a member of the Andrews Labor government, as we embark on the Big Housing Build – the largest investment in social housing made by any Australian government in history. One of the first steps I took when I was elected as Member for Footscray was to establish a forum with other western Labor MPs and our housing and crisis accommodation services. The shared vision is to work together to identify and repair the cracks of society. People who experience homelessness don’t do so because of some personal failing. All it can take is a run of bad luck, one or two things going wrong, and circumstances can change very quickly. Some members of our community are particularly at risk of experiencing homelessness, including women and children escaping family violence, LGBT+ Victorians, and women over the age of 55 who represent the fastest growing demographic. Every Victorian experiencing homelessness has one thing in common despite their differences: the need for a roof over their head. The Andrews Labor government announced in October 2018 that it would help more Victorians escaping family violence, homelessness and life on the streets by building 1000 new public housing properties

Oral historian and documentary maker Jessica Ferrari shares her “moving and inspirational” experience chronicling the untold stories of the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force in Point Cook. She talks with Alesha Capone.

s Ferrari runs Memento Media, making legacy memoirs and celebration tributes for individuals, communities and organisations. In 2017, she received a grant from the federal government’s Community Heritage and Icon Grants Program to create an eight-part documentary series about the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force (WRAAF) personnel who were based at Point Cook’s air base between 1951 and 1977. The series, which was a finalist in last year’s Victorian Community History Awards and Premier’s History Awards, features archival footage, photos and interviews celebrating the contribution which the “amazing women” of the WRAAF made to the nation. Ms Ferrari said a letter of support from RAAF historian Martin James was a great help in enlisting support for her online documentary series, which has been viewed more than 17,500 times. Ms Ferrari said she came up with the idea for the series after visiting the RAAF Museum in Point Cook, where she was impressed by the aircraft displays but did not see much about the WRAAF’s heritage. Qashqai fades to black By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring With a completely new Qashqai waiting in the wings, Nissan has come up with something special as a swansong to the present generation of the top-selling crossover vehicle – the Qashqai Midnight Edition. Selling more than a million units since its introduction in Europe in 2014, the new Qashqai will introduce to the motoring world Nissan’s ePower drive system, which offers full electric drive to the wheels. A high-output battery and powertrain integrated with the petrol engine, power generator, inverter and a motor, in a conventional hybrid the wheels are driven by electric motor and petrol engine combined. With ePower, the petrol engine is not connected to the wheels, it simply charges the battery and unlike a full electric vehicle, the power source is the engine, rather than battery only. However, I digress. While the third generation of the Qashqai is clocking up the kilometres in testing on European roads in preparation for a world launch in the northern spring, Nissan Down Under is maintaining interest in the present model with the addition of the Midnight Edition. Slotting in between the N-Sport and Ti variants, at $35,900, plus on-road costs, the compact SUV, as the name suggests, takes on dramatic gloss black highlights in contrast to its five body colours. Standard features offered across the range include Intelligent Key with keyless entry and close, push button ignition, electronic park brake, handsfree phone system, cruise control, manual tilt-and-reach adjustable steering column, 60 / 40 split fold second-row seating, ISOFIX child restraint anchorage points and four rear cargo area luggage hooks.

headliner and air vents defined in gloss black. The steering wheel, gearshift knob and stick surround are accented in black, while a similar design is carried by a leather centre console lid. Alcantara and leather accented seats are standard on the Midnight Edition, with the driver and front passenger seats manually adjustable six ways. A two-way lumbar support tops off the lot. The 60 / 40 split rear seat set-up incorporates a centre armrest, which folds down to provide two extra cup holders.

Infotainment Class-leading audio and connectivity set the standard here with DAB+ digital radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming with voice recognition and satellite navigation with traffic tracking. All are controlled through a 7-inch colour touch-screen display, which sadly at times, because of the angle at which it is set, loses definition through reflection of exterior light.

Engines / transmissions As with all other models in the Qashqai range, the Midnight Edition relies on the carried-over 2-litre direct injection petrol engine, mated with an Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission with shift and Eco modes.

Midnight’s performance on test was par for the Qashqai course. At cruising speed, so long as there was no call for instant response to the accelerator pedal, the car fairly skipped along. The motor was generally quiet, unless pushed, when there was a resulting rasp. Unlike some CVTs with an intrusive whine at high revs, the Xtronic acts like a traditional automatic gearbox, stepping through the changes under hard acceleration. It also uses Intelligent Engine Braking to mimic standard shifting to a lower gear to deliver smooth deceleration. With a maker’s claim of combined urban / highway fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres the test car a couple of times tipped over 10 litres per 100 kilometres around town, while 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres, popped up on a motorway run. The ride was on the firm side, a consequence of the low profile tyres on 19-inch rims, but there was plenty of grip and little body roll on bends. However, the car did pick up plenty of road noise and every blemish was noted on uneven surfaces. The boot capacity of the Qashqai is good, with 430 litres of cargo space. There is a space-saver spare wheel under the boot floor. Towing capacity is 729 kg unbraked, 1200 kg braked.

Summary It all comes down to a straight choice: sticking with the striking looks but dated technology of the Midnight Edition, or hanging in there for the next-gen Qashqai with the possibility of owning the ePower petrol / electric hybrid option.

SPORT National competition preferred for second tier A true national soccer competition is the favoured model for the National Second Division (NSD) competition. The Reshaping the second tier of football in Australia progress report, released last week, sets out the proposed working model for the NSD as developed by Association of Australian Football Clubs [AAFC] together with its NSD Partner Group. It identifies and explores the critical success factors for a successful NSD and discusses the available options for governance and commercial arrangements for the new league, and its clubs. Among the 32 clubs in the partner group are local clubs Altona Magic, Hume City, Caroline Springs George Cross and Melbourne Knights.

The report states that Football Australia chief executive James Johnson, has repeatedly said it was no longer about “if” we will have a national second division but about “how” and “when”. In the report, the group highlights the forming of a new competition in 2022-23 with 12 clubs initially and plans to expand to 16 by 2025. It states there is a pathway gap between the A-League and the NPL clubs. “This report is about what our member clubs can contribute to Football Australia in establishing and operating a true national second tier,” it states. “It is about the best possible. Not about a notional ‘best’ or the merely ‘possible’.” Promotion and relegation with the NPL competitions is essential for the competition,

with discussions about promotion and relegation with the A-League once the competition is established also on the cards. The report looked at three different models for how the competition could run – a national competition; a conference system; and the existing National Premier League’s playing an extended national finals series. The partner group’s view is for a singular national competition. “The proposed model represents the best possible financially viable and responsible true second tier which can be delivered. “We understand it may disappoint those with more ambitious hopes for it from the start – that it might be immediately fully professional, for example.”

While it’s predicted to cost more than the other options, more than $1 million per club, overall the competition structure’s benefits outweigh the others. “As disclosed by the analysis, any savings in travel costs are more than off-set by the expected reduced revenue from such a model,” the report states. “Further, the wider benefits a truly national second division will bring to the game will not be achieved by a localised conference model.” The report a states a national second tier women’s competition would kick-off in 2025. NSD clubs continue to participate in NPL at youth level. The final report is due in April. Tara Murray

Squad leads the way By Tara Murray Williamstown Athletics Club is putting together a female track and field squad to rival the best in the country. Led by Australia’s top female heptathlete Celeste Mucci, the squad includes a number of talented athletes and, with the development of some exciting talent coming through, has coaches at the club excited. Club president Stefan Voorham said the club was proud of its female program. “Through all their hard work, our female athletes have recently achieved fantastic results with six state titles at the 2020 State Championships,” he said. “The Williamstown Athletic Club is excited to watch their development and see them reach their goals.” Mucci, who has been part of the club since she was a little athlete, has gone on to represent Australia in the heptathlon in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games where she placed 4th overall. Mucci said the club had done a lot for her and her career. “I’ve been with Williamstown since I was a junior and transitioned to seniors with them,” she said. “I love my small club. They have done a lot to support me over the years and I’m excited to have more of my squad join this amazing club.” Maddie Coates, Kiara Reddingius, Jessie Andrew and Mareelou Boyle have all joined the club in recent years. Coates, from Watsonia, has represented Australia at both junior and senior level, including at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2019 World Championships in both the 200 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay. Coates said Williamstown felt like the right fit for her, having previously been involved in coaching clinics at the club. Reddingius, who moved to Avondale Heights from Western Australia, has been with the club the past two seasons and has represented Australia at the Oceanic Games. Jessie Andrew, who is from Riddells Creek, was the 100 metre sprint champion at the Oceanic Championships in 2017 and was the 2020 state 200 metre champion. Yarraville’s Mareelou Boyle has been at the club the past two years and was part of the Australian 4 x 200m indoor relay team that set a new Australian record in 2017. Mucci and Andrew were also part of that team. Up-and-comer Ashlee Farrar is also impressing. She won the Stawell Gift Little Athletics 100m in 2019 and holds many Williamstown Little Athletic records. The club is also establishing a strong coaching line-up. Elite distance running coach Elizabeth Mathews is involved at the club. Among the athletes she trains are Olympian and western suburbs athlete Morgan Mitchell and up-and-coming athletes Lucinda Rourke,

Coach Robbie Spencer, who specialises in sprints, hurdles and long jump, believes that having elite, approachable and dedicated role models will ensure the young athletes can “be what they can see”. “We pride ourselves on being a club that accepts any athlete that wants to join.”

Melton Bowls Club members were keen observers of the Bowls Victoria State Champions week earlier this month. With four of its new recruits among those competing against the best of the state, there was plenty of excitement. New club coach Todd Trewarne, along with a young trio of stars Lisa Trewarne, Sophie Kurzman and Lily Dodd, all put in some strong performances. Melton’s Conrad Dawson said the club hadn’t seen results such as these at a state level in a long time. “Results aside this season, we’ve had some amazing young kids coming to the club and kicking goals. “The kids were flying at the championships against the champions of different clubs and regions. “We’ve brought a lot of youth into the club. It was something the club had to do and we’re focusing on. “They’ve done a fantastic job and we’re proud as punch.” Lisa Trewarne paired with her old Sunbury teammate Carla Krizanic, who also won the champion of champions women’s single title, to claim the women’s pairs title in a thriller. Todd Trewarne also teamed up with Krizanic, winning the mixed pairs by one shot. Dodd, who came across from Bacchus Marsh, made the semi-finals of the under-18 girls competition and the final of the under-18 open triples. Kurzman, who came from Sunbury, along with the Trewarnes, won the under-18 girls pairs title. Lisa Trewarne and Kurzman also made the semi-finals of the women’s fours, alongside Krizanic and Akasha Fortune. Dawson said all four had fitted in well in their Saturday pennant side and the club.
