Fires spark call for action By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay councillors have called for the Environment Protection Authority to act in the wake of two industrial fires in eight days, just over the municipal border in Laverton North. The two recent fires were at Norstar Steel Recyclers in Dohertys Road and InfraBuild Recycling (formerly OneSteel) in Fitzgerald Road, on January 4 and 11, respectively. Last December, the NSW Environment Protection Authority fined InfraBuild Wire $45,000 over defects at its Newcastle site where large volumes of hazardous and corrosive solutions such as acids are used to make steel

rods, wire and fencing products. Norstar received more than $16,000 in fines after a fire at the recycling company’s Dandenong South plant in 2019 triggered an investigation. Wetlands ward councillors Diana Grima and Matt Tyler said Hobsons Bay residents bore the brunt of the fires with “smoke filling our suburbs”. “We are calling on the EPA for swift action in relation to these incidents to understand what happened and to enforce penalties strongly, where appropriate,” they said in a joint written statement. “Safety regulations and compliance requirements need to be followed and they are there for a reason – to keep our people safe,

and our air quality and local environment protected. “They are also there to support local workers and make sure they get home safely. “We would like to see all business operators acting responsibly by adhering to their obligations, and doing everything they can to protect our environment and public health. “Local people deserve to see those causing the damage to be held accountable.” The council is working with the EPA and WorkSafe in relation to the fires. An EPA spokesperson said action had been taken to ensure any stockpiles met safety regulations and any contaminated firewater would not enter local waterways. “EPA issued InfraBuild (OneSteel), 62

Fitzgerald Road, Laverton North, with a regulatory notice requiring the company to cease accepting combustible recyclable and waste material,” the spokesperson said. “All firewater for the incident was prevented from leaving the site. “EPA issued Norstar with an emergency direction requiring the company to remove firewater that was at risk of breaching onsite containment, and the company had complied by the following day. “EPA onsite testing indicated that nearby Kayes Drain had not been affected by firewater.” A WorkSafe spokesman said the statutory authority was making inquiries. Norstar Steel Recyclers and Infrabuild Recycling were contacted for comment.

A new artwork has been created in the Skeleton Creek underpass in Seabrook by Melbourne-based artist Rich Keville, featuring themes of biodiversity and conservation. Williamstown Cricket Oval redevelopment Works to redevelop the existing oval at the Williamstown Cricket Ground are progressing well, with drainage and irrigation installation works now complete. The new turf surface is scheduled to be laid late January 2021, and the oval will be fenced off from public use for a number of months thereafter to allow for successful grass establishment.

Improving pedestrian safety in Queen Street Work is under way to construct footpath connections and pedestrian refuge islands in Queen Street between Orville Street and Powlett Street and, Rosebery Street and Shirley Street, as part of the Western LAMP/Altona Meadows Traffic Treatment works. Mad Max fans revved up By Goya Dmytryshchak The Mad Max interceptor car will be on display near the Steve Irwin ship in Williamstown as part of a fundraising event celebrating the cult Australian movie. The main character, Maximillian Rockatansky played by Mel Gibson, drove the the iconic Ford Falcon XB dubbed the ‘interceptor’ in the Mad Max films. A dress-up party will be held aboard Sea Shepherd Australia’s retired flagship vessel on Sunday, January 24, ahead of a screening of Mad Max (1979) at Seaworks. ‘The Steve’ has a new mission as a not-for-profit museum ship and education and entertainment space to benefit Sea Shepherd. It is berthed at Workshop Pier behind Seaworks. “The movie was set in 2021 with a civilisation that was in decline because of resources that were being depleted resulting in all sorts of civil unrest,” Ship4Good founder Kerrie Goodall said. “Obviously, the analogy would not be missed by many in today’s society. “We’re celebrating [the movie’s anniversary] with a little bit of fun and awareness about the need to protect our environment and resources. “So, we’re going to have a Mad Max dress-up theme and we’re bringing down the original interceptor car from Mad Max, and people have the opportunity of having a photo taken inside the interceptor for a donation. “It’s all to raise funds for the ship, for COVID recovery.” Prizes will be given for best costume and there will be wood fire pizza, a live DJ and bar. Cinema on the waterfront Sun Theatre Yarraville has set up a new outdoor cinema in the Gantry Plaza at Seaworks on the Williamstown waterfront. Seaworks executive officer Glenn Jones said the Sun Cinema at Williamstown would screen new and classic films through to May. “There are a variety of ticket options available, including beanbag hire, Cape Cod double chairs, seating on the grass – BYO chair – and a Scotchmans Hill combo,” he said. “The candy bar will be open selling the Sun Theatre’s famous choc tops, popcorn and snacks. Hobsons Bay City Council, acting under section 206 and Schedule 10 Clause 3 of the Local Government Act 1989 (“the Act”), proposes to discontinue the road adjoining 8 Simcock Avenue, Spotswood, which is shown hatched on the plan below.

If discontinued, the Council proposes to sell the land from the road by private treaty to the adjoining property owner. In accordance with section 223 of the Act, any person wishing to make a submission on the proposal must do so in writing to the Council no later than Thursday, 18 February 2021. A person making a submission is entitled to request in the submission that they wish to appear in person, or to be represented by a person specified in the submission, in support of the submission at a meeting of the Council or its Committee on a date, time and place to be determined by the Council. All submissions will be considered in accordance with section 223 of the Act.

Council is rolling out an Australian-first solar installation program which includes the installation of solar panels on more than 40 Council buildings and the creation of a Virtual Energy Network (VEN). The VEN directs energy where it is needed, not just where it is generated, enabling solar energy from all buildings to be shared across Council-owned assets.

Following the consideration of any submissions, the Council may decide to discontinue and sell the road, part of the road or not to discontinue and sell the road.

We’re currently designing a Community Solar Program, to enable community access to the VEN and reduce the barriers to using and generating renewable energy. We need your ideas and input to guide the development of the community access model.

All Australians celebrated By Goya Dmytryshchak Indigenous cultures and active citizenship will be the focus of this year’s Australia Day event in Williamstown. The Altona Lions Club has revamped its Australia Day breakfast with a post-lockdown federal government grant to host an event for up to 400 people at Seaworks. Altona Lions president Catherine Curtain said the club wanted to recognise and celebrate the importance of the history, traditions, and cultures of Indigenous Australians, as well as acknowledging active citizenship and achievements of outstanding residents. “It’s important that we reflect on and learn about our nation’s journey, respect the different views about Australia Day and, collectively, have constructive conversations about our history, seeking ways to move forward together,” she said. Laverton couple, Wiradjuri soprano vocalist Shauntai Batzke and Miriam Torres Strait Islander poet Robbie Batzke, will be among an impressive line-up performing at the event. Ms Batzke said Australia Day was both a day of celebration and of mourning. “Personally, it’s an opportunity to reflect and appreciate the past and look towards our future,” she said. “It’s about coming together with family … my family is of many nations, so I celebrate Australia Day as we are today but I also reflect on the Indigenous experience that we had, which is a day of mourning in a sense as well. “Mostly, I’m Indigenous, and I also have Chinese, German, Welsh, English and Maori [ethnicity].” Mr Batzke said his parents’ marriage was one of the first unions between a German and a Torres Strait Islander.

Mr Batzke, 54, said Australia Day had been “very, very confusing” for him, growing up. “I’m a self-made poet and all I talk about are these issues of growing up as a little boy at Holloways Beach, north of Cairns.” Maribyrnong council will host a private

Police station reduces hours Williamstown Police station has reduced its front reception hours for the public due to officers being deployed to border patrols in COVID hot spots. However, police command has moved to assure the community the emergency response for urgent matters remains unchanged and the reduced hours are temporary. Hobsons Bay Inspector Tim O’Connor said the front reception of the station in Nelson Place would be closed at night. “The reception counter … is closed over the nightshift at the moment, between about 10.30pm and 7am,” he said. “If people during that time still require counter service, they can go to the Altona Police station or to any other 24-hour police station that’s open. “Even though the station front doors are closed, overall police response in the area remains unchanged. “We firstly encourage Victorians to continue contacting the police assistance line on 131 444 or use online reporting for urgent matters. “Obviously, in an emergency call triple-0 and for coronavirus-related questions call the coronvirus hotline on 1800 675 398.” Inspector O’Connor said the reduced hours at Williamstown were mainly due to police being deployed to COVID border patrols. The 24-hour police stations closest to Williamstown include Footscray Police station at 66 Hyde Street and Altona Police station at 1 Galvin Street.

Crown for all women By Goya Dmytryshchak A Footscray woman named Mrs India Australia 2020 says the crown belongs to all women. Born in India, 29-year-old Anumeha Tomar earned her MBA in marketing and finance before moving to Australia in November, 2019, and was married the following month. Mrs Tomar said she applied for Raj Suri title during Melbourne’s COVID lockdowns. “This crown is not mine, but it belongs to all women out there,” she said. “My story of a small-town girl to Mrs India Australia 2020 is no less than a snake and ladder game. No matter how deep the fall was, I refused to give up in life. “I can relate to all the married women who spend the majority of their lives in India and later migrated to Australia. The move is challenging as they leave behind their well-paid jobs, family and friends to start a new life here. “Something similar happened to me. “Once I moved here, COVID started and I was jobless. Sitting idle, home all day, I was openly inviting depressing thoughts to seep in. “I was slipping away from my dreams, goals and my own self.” Mrs Tomar said she decided to start making videos and uploading them on YouTube. “Over the period, I got people following me and actually enjoying my funny content,” she said. “Finally, the lockdown was over and I was back to work. “Life runs like yin yang. Centre rolls out welcome mat Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre in Altona is having an open day to welcome people back after months of COVID lockdowns. Centre manager Kim Reilly said the venue had essentially been closed since March last year. “What we want to do is … encourage people to come in, particularly to see what we’re offering in the term one program,” she said. Ms Reilly said the centre also wanted to reconnect with the community to see if there are courses and classes that people wanted the venue to run. She said during the lockdowns the centre had helped people stay connected through art. “We’ve got lots of art classes happening again,” she said. “We talk about art in terms of not just being a pastime or creative outlet but also a healing process, so we have lots of art options for people who are at different stages in their life and wellbeing. We’re wanting to really encourage people out of their homes, particularly after COVID.” At the open day, people can find out about the Repair Cafe, talk to volunteers about what they do at the centre, help create a community jigsaw, discuss technology lessons in Zoom, FaceTime and WhatsApp, check out quilts made by locals and find groups to join or volunteer with. Stroke risk on the rise By Tara Murray Residents in Melbourne’s north-west are tipped to be among those most heavily impacted by strokes in the next 30 years, according to new Stroke Foundation data. The foundation has released the No Postcode Untouched 2020 study which looks at who is impacted by strokes and forecasts stroke figures. The Lalor electorate is expected to be one of the top electorates for people living with stroke and the number of new stroke cases in a given year by 2050. Lalor sits second behind Melbourne in the

predicted top 20 electorates in Australia, ahead of the Gorton electorate in seventh for both categories and Calwell 10th and Gellibrand 13th. None of those four electorates were in the top 20 for stroke incidence and prevalence in 2020. The study also looked at risk factors for stroke and found Lalor and Calwell residents had a prevalence of high blood pressure and high cholesterol in 2020. Lalor and Gorton had a high number of daily smokers. All three electorates also recorded a high number of residents considered to be overweight or obese. Stroke Foundation clinical council chair

Bruce Campbell said high blood pressure, otherwise known as hypertension, was a key risk factor for stroke and the most modifiable. He said having your blood pressure checked was easy, painless and potentially life-saving, but was too often overlooked. “I know the new year is a time for resolutions and a fresh start for many,” Professor Campbell said. “This year, rather than jumping straight into long-term health goals like getting fit or losing a few kilos, start with a blood pressure check at your doctor or pharmacy. “It’s like checking your car is in good working order before a big road trip.”

Professor Campbell said the only way to know if you have high blood pressure was to have it checked regularly. “High blood pressure has no immediate symptoms … is also a risk for other cardiovascular conditions and increases the risk of death from the coronavirus. “High blood pressure can impact people of all ages, but it can be managed through medication, minimising salt intake and living a healthy, active lifestyle. “Research has shown the number of strokes would be almost cut in half (48 per cent reduction) if high blood pressure alone was eliminated.”

Experience music The Bluestone Sessions outdoor music series kicks off in the Footscray Community Arts Centre amphitheatre on Saturday. Scheduled over four Saturdays in January and February, each session will run for three hours from 5pm. FCAC contemporary music creative producer Arthur Tanzi said the sessions would feature live music alongside DJs, and were open to all ages. “The Bluestone Sessions were born out of the idea of being able to activate our beautiful amphitheatre in the summer,” he said. “It seats about 300-400 people and it’s got a really beautiful view of the river and the Docklands and the city. “That lends itself super-well to live music and to any kind of form of picnic or music event.” He said with COVID restrictions, the venue

could still take up to about 200 people. “The idea was to have about three live performances for each session and it’s a really nice combination of anything from soul to Ethiopian jazz to amazing pop,” Tanzi said. “The idea behind the curation was to create an experience for people to be able to, at one point, sit down and watch something quite mesmerising but also being able to dance as well – trying to combine a bunch of emotions into one event.” This Saturday’s line-up features Solomon Sisay, SO.Crates, Empat Lima and DJ Shio Otani. By Goya Dmytryshchak Australia’s most elite troops say this Remembrance Day the COVID-19 global pandemic has shone a different light on the meaning of sacrifice. Recently retired SAS Major Mark Bainbridge, who spent most of his 22 years’ service in the special forces on multiple tours to the Middle East, said this year had brought into perspective the meaning of real hardship. “I think Remembrance Day this year helps keep perspective on things,” the Newport RSL member said.

“If you think back, all those generations, and saw the commitment and sacrifice they made over a number of years … they were so resilient. “I think, in the light of today’s current global crisis, it really helps me keep perspective on current times versus some real hardships that people have been through before.” Major Bainbridge said he also reflected on those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “I’ve had a lot of my mates and colleagues killed in action,” he said. “Of the 41 Australians who have lost their lives overseas in the last few decades, I do know a lot of them and their families.

“So, I usually get in touch with their families and let them know we’re thinking of them.” Fellow Newport RSL member, Lieutenant Rebecca Hogan, followed her parents’ footsteps into the British navy full-time in 2002. She transferred from the UK military into the Australian navy in 2013, predominantly flying helicopters off the back of ships. “In the UK, we don’t have Anzac Day so Remembrance Day is our primary day to remember our war heroes and the armistice,” she said. “I do have many generations of family in the forces so, for me, remembrance revolves around family.

“I’ve been the one away deployed but I’ve also been the child with the parent deployed and seen the struggles that mum went through. “When dad was away doing his bit, she had to step up and be both parents to two children. “So, for me, Remembrance Day is as much about remembering the sacrifices that families have made in sending their loved ones away to the campaigns, as much as the service of the individuals themselves. “I think being ADF helped me cope with COVID a lot more … I remember my dad saying to me when we went into the first lockdown, just treat it like a deployment.”

MY PLACE Altona Meadows textile artist Tania Tanti found solace from quilting during the COVID lockdowns, she tells Goya Dmytryshchak. I moved to Altona Meadows 20 years ago and first worked at a local newspaper as a photographer and after having my own children began my own business, Kindergarten Studios, where I have photographed hundreds of beautiful children here in Hobsons Bay. Can you tell me about your textile art? I have always loved creating. I love to create quilts with either traditional patchwork fabrics or just fabrics that really capture my eye, mostly because of the pattern and texture. Recently I have combined my passion for painting and sewing to create some very vibrant art quilts. I am currently working on a body of work that will be in an exhibition at the Altona Louis Joel community centre gallery in late May. called Stitched & Framed. I’m hoping COVID won’t crash the exhibition. What do you like about Altona Meadows? We love to walk along the bike tracks of Altona Meadows leading to the 100 Steps and beyond to Altona itself. It’s a great walk and the many improvements and growth in the area over the years is really pleasing to see. It just keeps getting better. What would you change? I would like to see more art and opportunity for artists in the area to display and help Altona Meadows embrace all the diversity that we have right here. I feel that Altona Meadows is really underrated and has a lot of opportunity and potential for many great things. I think

art is really starting to find its place more and more in society and it would be a great welcome addition to add more artistic design elements in Hobsons Bay using local artists. What’s your favourite local cafe or restaurant? I like to go for a regular coffee and catch up with my girlfriends at the Jolly Miller. It’s always a great treat and the staff are very friendly. We also like to go for a meal at Stella Pizza in Altona – there’s something on the menu for everyone and it’s predictably good every time. Could you tell me about your ‘COVID quilt’? I have recently had a quilt that I created during the stage four lockdown here in Melbourne that will be in a COVID Gallery publication by Curated Quilts, a US magazine. It wasn’t an easy time to find the motivation when things just felt so desperate and sad here in Melbourne, but I forced myself to fill my day with what I love to do the most and thankfully sewing really got me through. The quilt I created is called ‘The Short Arsed (with platforms) Masked Quilter with Royal Connections’. It was also during the time of Black Lives Matter and also the US election. I felt for my fellow quilters in the US facing such unrest, and their anxiety and concern was just desperate. This is the lady that came out of that time and onto my design wall. Piecing and using my imagination has been one way of finding solace in these difficult times of 2020. Dreaming of making it to QuiltCon one day has also kept me determined and focused on all that quilting is for so many of us.

Ready for the next act A Spotswood-based opera tenor who started out in a heavy metal band speaks to Goya Dmytryshchak of his extraordinary career path and how COVID-19 united humanity.

hanul Sharma is performing in Opera Australia’s Great Opera Hits at the Sydney Opera House until March 3. Born in India, Sharma arrived in Australia at age 19 to study information technology. He was living in the regional New South Wales city of Wagga Wagga and singing in a band called Subrusion, which released three albums. The band’s influences included Killswitch and Metallica, but even then reviewers were starting to notice something in Sharma’s voice. “The guitars and the drums were very, very heavy but then suddenly there was a guy singing on top of it all,” he said. “In some reviews, the reviewers actually said, ‘Who’s the major soprano who goes so high?’ “For me, the only way to cut through all of the backing was to sing really, really high. “That kind of helped me develop a technique for opera, which served me well later on.” After about a decade in the band, Sharma stumbled across an Italian operatic tenor who would change the course of his life. “One day, randomly, while browsing YouTube, I came across this guy called Luciano Pavarotti,” Sharma said. “I was just infatuated by his voice and wanted to learn how to do it.” About this time, in 2012, Sharma’s band broke up and he decided he would become an opera singer. “For me, that type of singing was the fullest expression of my voice,” he said. Self-taught to that point, Sharma moved to Melbourne to train as an opera singer at the Ciccone Academy of Singing.

Sharma auditioned with Ah! Mes Amis from Gaetano Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment (The Daughter of the Regiment). “It has nine high Cs at the end, which is a very high note for an operatic tenor,” he said. “I sang that, not expecting anything at all, and two days later I get a call saying, ‘We’d like you to do La Cenerentola for the schools tour.’

“To be honest, I auditioned for Opera Australia in 2014 on a whim,” Sharma said. “An audition slot became available all of a sudden and my coach said, ‘Would you like to do it?’ “I said, ‘Well, why not’ – I wasn’t expecting anything from it.”

“I was like, ‘Oh, that’s great, when are the rehearsals?’ “And they were like, ‘The show is already on the road, you’ll have two days to learn the music and two days to learn the blocking (stage directions) and you’ll be on the road for three months’. “I had to find some new brain cells to learn an entire role, something I had never done in my life … I had never sung an operatic role before but here I was. “Within a week, I was transformed from a heavy metal singer into an opera tenor.” Sharma’s opera career took him around the world, all the way to the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. And then COVID struck. “I was in Moscow in March last year and

made it back with a week of Australia shutting the borders,” Sharma said. “Basically, for nine months, I was just in Melbourne trying to keep my voice supple. “For a person whose career is on an upward trajectory, COVID really shut everything down, and it was a very difficult time for everybody in the business. “The depression caused by that – and I had family problems again in India … it just compounded all of it and it was a very difficult time for the business.” Returning to the stage after months of lockdown has taken on new meaning. “It’s the most thrilling and most exciting experience,” Sharma said. “For me, getting back on the stage at the Sydney Opera House was like getting oxygen back in my lungs. “I missed it so much. I was counting the days I’d be back in that theatre. “I had my first show back on stage on the third of January and there was all this built up energy that I just let it out into the theatre and it was such an exhillerating feeling to be back on stage. “The arts and high arts in general are very important for us to experience ourselves as human beings because they deal with emotions and desires at a very fundamental level. “The classical arts are vital to our development as people, especially now that we’ve been through something as a whole. “We’ve experienced COVID as a singular consciousness … kind of what happened after the Second World War: all of the classical works started to make more sense.”

The ‘hidden’ benefits of dance Dancing comes naturally to kids, from when they first sit up. 2. Educational benefits: Dancing takes practice, discipline and focus – skills needed in all aspects of life. Some dance schools have yearly exams, with children required to work through a syllabus and practise hard for months before demonstrating their skills to examiners. 3. Physical health: Dancing is a highly physical pursuit, and can increase stamina, strength and flexibility. It can also improve co-ordination and balance, correct poor posture and increase cardiovascular health. Amba Hawley, director of flourishing Love to Dance School of Ballet for the past 16 years, didn’t let COVID restrictions knock her down. Instead of teaching at her Yarraville-based venues, she threw herself into converting her home garage into a dance studio, and launched a rigorous online dance program. And that all happened within 14 days of the first lockdown, she says. “I’d been looking for a permanent venue for a while and during lockdown 2.0, I found the perfect space in Altona and began renovating it in readiness for our dancers’ return,” Amba says. “We’re now ready to roll, and taking enrolments – with 25 per cent off term fees until January 30, 2021.” Love to Dance offers classes – from beginners to advanced – for kindy students to adults. These include classical ballet (including pointe work); jazz; contemporary; and creative dance; as well as Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT), and yoga. The studio is a registered Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) school and offers RAD examinations. Amba, who has 25 years’ dance training experience and collaborates with Advanced Teacher Emily Anketell, says that the school focuses on creative development, healthy mind and body attitudes, and technical proficiency. “The training philosophy we foster is to engage students intelligently and creatively,” Amba says. “The students are active contributors in productions, costume design, choreography, stagecraft and the creative process. “And our professionally produced end-of-year performances are unique in their creation and staging, utilising dance, film,

SPORT Barlow career comes full circle By Tara Murray The Werribee Football Club holds a special place in new coach Michael Barlow’s heart. It is where he stood out on the football field and got a shot at AFL level. Werribee welcomed him back both on field, and as an assistant coach the past two years, when his AFL playing days were over. Now, he steps into the head coaching role with Mark Williams heading back into the AFL system. “More recently I’ve grown more fond of the club,” Barlow told Star Weekly. “The first opportunity helped me get onto an AFL list and I made lifelong friends. “Then in a wholesome role in the community that has shaped my life beyond AFL football.” Since retiring from AFL, Barlow has put in the work behind the scenes to achieve his aspirations of becoming a VFL coach. He said while many coaches aim to get into the AFL system, the flexibility of the VFL system was something that attracted him.

This just hasn’t fallen in my lap - Michael Barlow “There’s an element of excitement, nerves, a bit of anxiety, all good feelings,” he said of taking on the role. “It’s something I’ve had aspirations to do since I finished playing AFL. “This just hasn’t fallen in my lap. It’s something I’ve been angling for, for the last two years.” Flashback to three months ago, Barlow’s 2021 football season was looking very different. He was appointed playing-coach of Western Region Football League side Yarraville-Seddon Eagles and was to oversee the club’s whole coaching program. Barlow said the decision to step away from that role was harder than it appeared. “My life was turned upside down,” he said of the possibility of coaching Werribee. “They were two really good roles to consider … It wasn’t as easy as it would suggest. “I was preparing to coach in the WRFL for at least the next season, possibly the next two years. “I live three minutes from the oval. I was really enjoying the challenge, coaching my own program at Yarraville-Seddon. It’s a bit disappointing to step away after doing it for three months.” Barlow said he would help the Eagles with the transition into a new coach and would still look to be involved with the club in some capacity. “There’s a huge upside and talent and excitement.” One person Barlow is full of praise for, is his former coach Mark Williams. He’s the first to admit he wouldn’t be in the situation he is now without Williams. “Chocco was phenomenal as a person and a coach,” he said. “The stuff that he implemented at the club has fast-tracked the club 12 to 18 months. I’m fortunate to take over the role.” Despite so much familiarity stepping into the role, Barlow faces a number of new challenges. Werribee is part of a new-look competition, the VFL and East Coast Second-Tier competition, which will feature teams from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. With it comes new rules, including some age restrictions in place and quotas on having younger players in the team. Barlow said he was a little anxious how that would play out. “Where does it leave the mature players

and whether it allows the best team in the competition to win the premiership? “It’ll be the team that adapts and has the best strong core of players. Our young players who are under-21 are bullish about them. “There’s a bit of motivation with the opportunity to prove themselves.” Having been appointed late in the piece, most of the club’s re-signing and recruiting had been completed by the time Barlow was appointed. “Huge credit to the established list that was initially going to play in the COVID-19 year, especially with salary caps and remuneration slashed. “Michael Sodomaco and Tom Gribble put their hands up straight away. It makes my job more fulfilling that

they’re doing it for the right reasons.” Former Geelong and Port Adelaide player Wylie Buzza has joined the club. Connor Menadue (rookie listed by North Melbourne), Matt Munro and Dane Mcfarlane are the three key outs. One name that isn’t part of the playing squad, is Barlow himself. He said his playing days with Werribee were likely over. “Playing isn’t something I’ve considered,” he said. “With the new rules it’s forced my hand a bit. “There’s limited opportunities for other guys and I have to be mindful of that. Unless we get light on as the season goes on, my playing days at Werribee are finished. “I still have the bug to play and I’ll never lose that competitive bug. Potentially I might play at Yarraville Seddon, depending on the draw.”
