Spectacular end to 2020 Two local schools are putting the lengthy lockdown behind them in spectacular fashion. Hillside’s Parkwood Green Primary School and Melton West Primary School will be part of the annual Victorian State Schools Spectacular event when it returns to screens this Saturday night. The Spectacular has become an invaluable rite of passage for Victoria’s top young talent. This year’s usual arena event will be replaced with a made-for-TV production featuring pre-recorded pieces due to physical distancing restrictions. A special broadcast with behind-the-scenes highlights will air on Seven from 7pm this Saturday. It will also be live-streamed on the 7plus app and 7plus website and be available for catch-up viewing for 30 days from the broadcast date.

Hospital budget windfall By Benjamin Millar Construction of a new Melton Hospital could begin as soon as 2022 after the state government announced $75 million towards getting the 24-hour hospital under way in Cobblebank. The government last week committed $75 million from the 2020-21 budget towards buying the necessary land and undertaking detailed planning and early works for the hospital to service the area’s booming population. Health Minister Martin Foley said the spending is part of a $9 billion investment

over the next four years to ensure Victorian hospitals and local health services come out of the coronavirus pandemic stronger than ever. He said more than $2 billion will be spent on building, expanding and modernising hospitals and health services across the state. “2020 has reminded us of what matters most – the health and wellbeing of the people we love,” he said. Melton MP Steve McGhie said the funding announcement was welcome news for the area. “This budget will take the next steps towards delivering the brand-new hospital our growing

community needs – making sure local families can rely on care, close to home.” Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the funding was fantastic news for the community and followed years of intense lobbying. She said the funding commitment brings the vital project much closer to reality. “As one of the fastest growing municipalities in the country, we know a hospital is essential to respond to the health needs of our community. It’s something the west desperately needs and deserves.” A report released earlier this year by West of

Melbourne Economic Development Alliance found the hospital would add $300 million to the region’s economy each year and create 375 construction jobs and 3825 ongoing jobs. Cr Majdlik said the hospital project is an investment in good health and local jobs. She said the hospital: “Will trigger further investment and help transform the City of Melton into an economic centre of statewide importance”. The state government is expected to release the business case by the end of this month and the hospital is slated for completion in 2026. 12468826-SN45-20

Soil approval angers council By Benjamin Millar Western suburbs councils have lashed out at the state government’s approval for toxic West Gate Tunnel soil to be dumped in Bacchus Marsh and Ravenhall, with one council threatening legal action. State Planning Minister Richard Wynne last week gave the green light for Maddingley Brown Coal (MBC) to receive and store contaminated soil from the $6.8 billion West Gate Tunnel Project in Bacchus Marsh and for Cleanaway to take the soil at its Ravenhall site.

Both sites have been ticked off by the Environment Protection Authority to receive the soil, which is riddled with PFAS and asbestos. In issuing his decision, Mr Wynne said the West Gate Tunnel project will improve the freeway network and generate substantial economic activity and jobs for Victorians. An MBC spokesman said the company welcomes the ministerial approval of its proposed Western Soil Treatment facility. “The project has now been approved by both the Minister for Planning as well as the EPA, confirming it meets strict environmental

standards and regulations.” But Moorabool council – which has vehemently opposed the Bacchus Marsh facility – has flagged potential legal action. Council chief executive Derek Madden said the council is not surprised but “extremely disappointed” with the decision. “The whole way through this, council was left in the dark and effectively shut out of the planning decision process, as the minister called the project in to make the decision,” he said. “This means the decision was made without any decent consultation with our

community, which is a slap in the face.” Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik expressed “extreme disappointment” over the approval. “I’m absolutely shocked that the state government thinks … this is appropriate, we’re talking about toxic soil and hundreds of truck movements every day in an area where families live and work,” Cr Majdlik said. She urged residents to contact their local state MPs and to sign the petition hosted on the ‘Stop the Soil’ website run jointly by Melton and Brimbank councils. Cleanaway was contacted for comment.

Council chief executive Kelvin Tori said any property that has bins collected by council each week is entitled to its choice of hard waste collection or trailer load drop off. “This is included in your waste collection service, so you won’t need to pay anything – just ensure your items and loads meet the requirements for collection or drop off,” he said. “We want to make sure everyone is getting the most out of council services. Whether you’re a renter or an owner, this service is here for you to use.” Melton residents and ratepayers can also dispose of green waste free of charge until the end of December. A number of items including recyclables and whitegoods can be dropped off for free all year. Beach drowning

A 24-year-old Melton woman has drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming at a Phillip Island beach. Emergency services were called to Smiths Beach about 6.40pm on Sunday following reports that a woman was struggling in the water. The woman was rescued and taken to the beach where paramedics performed CPR, but she was unable to be revived.

Sydenham’s Shirley Yeates’ creative touch will be on Christmas cards this year. The 74-year-old Arcare resident won the aged care community’s inaugural art competition which showcases the original artworks of residents and team members. From more than 100 submissions, Ms Yeates was selected as one of six winners, taking out the executive’s choice division. Her artworks will be used for Arcare’s Christmas cards this month. Ms Yeates worked as a physiologist until her retirement and picked up art as a hobby once she retired. Winning this art competition was a surprise, she said. “I was truly thrilled to bits. I am truly appreciative of this acknowledgement,” Ms

Yeates said. She first started with tree bark artwork and later moved on to making soft toys with socks. Once she joined the Arcare Sydenham community in August 2019, she started painting and card making. “It’s very relaxing; it takes my mind off things that I do tend to worry about,” Ms Yeates said. Arcare chief Colin Singh said the competition aimed to celebrate the talented residents and team members within its community, and of course, show off their artistry. “The designs were open to public voting via Arcare’s website and Facebook page, with special guest judging,” Mr Singh said. Budget cash for ‘vital projects’ By Benjamin Millar Health, education and roads are the key areas of spending in Melton and Moorabool announced in the Victorian government’s 2020-21 budget. A multi-billion spending package was announced last week in a bid to get the state back on track following the heavy impact of the global coronavirus pandemic. The biggest allocation to the Melton area will be $75 million to purchase land and undertake detailed planning and early works for a new

hospital. The area’s largest-ever spend on schools will deliver $25.3 million for the remaining stages of the Exford Primary School school’s master plan, a $9.7 million upgrade rebuilding the junior building at Melton Specialist School and $3.2 million for the Diggers Rest Primary School upgrade. Funding has also been allocated to acquire land for a future secondary school in Aintree. A further $1.18 million will go to the MacPherson Park soccer pavilion and $500,000 for the Melton Town Centre revitalisation.

The budget includes $12.7 million to replace the existing roundabout at High Street and Coburns Road with traffic lights and lights will also be installed at the High Street and Norton Drive intersection. Signalisation improvements are also slated for Main Street, Grant Street, Gisborne Road and Griffith Street, Bacchus Marsh. Funding has also been allocated for works to help protect the Lerderderg and Werribee rivers. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the spending was welcome in helping meet the rapidly growing area’s unique needs.

“A new hospital, major school upgrades and growth funding are among the budget allocations that will make a big difference to our residents and we thank the state government for this funding,” she said. “As one of the fastest growing areas in the country, these sorts of projects are vital. “We will continue to lobby for the many needs of our community. In particular, the electrification of the Melton railway line, upgrades to the Western and Melton highways and the provision of a dedicated local family violence service.”

Lesson out of this world A Toolern Vale school is taking a giant leap for learning by playing a pivotal role in a space science experiment. Toolern Vale and District Primary School has been selected to receive and plant six golden wattle seeds that will have spent six months at the International Space Station. Upon the return of the seeds from space, they will be presented to the school for planting. Teacher Sarndra Evans, who spearheaded the school’s entry into the ‘Seeds in Space’ educational program, said the pupils were very excited to have been selected. “My year 3-4 class got together to do a video, they did it from the perspective of a bee, then my kids voiced over the things the bee was doing as it zoomed around the garden,” she said. “We were one of the 150 schools accepted. The seeds have gone to someone from the

government in Japan and they are due to go into space in December, they are meant to be at the space station for six months and then be back in time for Science Week next year.” The school will be given six wattle seeds that went to space and six seeds from the same batch that did not make the journey. Once planted they will track their progress and see what differences can be observed between the two batches of golden wattle. The school has also been given additional opportunities such as the chance to take part in an online forum with a retired NASA scientist. Federal Science Minister Karen Andrews said: “This is a fun and exciting way to get our young people engaged in STEM and combines Australia’s oldest industry agriculture with our blossoming space industry”. By Benjamin Millar Long-serving councillor Tom Sullivan has broken a drought stretching more than two decades to once again become Moorabool’s new mayor. The Millbrook farmer and licenced surveyor (pictured) will be taking on the role for the third time in his 24 years as a West Moorabool ward councillor, taking on the mayoralty for the first time since serving 1999 and 2000. Cr Sullivan was elected to the position unopposed at a council meeting held last week

after being nominated by Tonia Dudzik. Newly elected Moorabool councillor Rod Ward has become the deputy mayor after being nominated by outgoing mayor David Edwards. Cr Sullivan said he was looking forward to putting his years as a councillor to good use in tying up some loose ends over the next four years. “As a council, we have four returning councillors and three who are new and I think we are well placed to take the shire forward,” he said. “There were just a few major projects that have been ongoing for a few terms for council,

hopefully in this four-year term they come to completion.” High on the list is improving sewerage for the Bungaree and Wallace areas to assist development. “I think as a shire it’s important to have a dispersed growth rather than all in one area,” he said. Cr Sullivan said the council would continue to fight contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel project being trucked to Bacchus Marsh, despite the state government signing off on the plans.

Stalwart to lead council

Carols, the COVID way Caroline Springs Community Carols will be back this month with a socially distanced twist. All the familiar carols will be performed and the Christmas spirit will be in the air, but the event will for the first time be held entirely online. Melissa Maher, a pastor at Inchurch Melbourne in Caroline Springs, said organisers have partnered with Melton Christian College to pre-record the carols using the school’s auditorium. “We’ve been putting on Caroline Springs Community Carols with the support of City of Melton for the past five years, but because of the issues we’ve been having with COVID-19 we approached the council about doing an online carols this year,” she said. “City of Melton has been really supportive and we’ve gone into full swing getting it all together.” The event will include Christmas greetings

from local businesses as a reminder of how tough they have been doing during the long lockdown period. “We’re also going to have a Zoom call with Santa and will be running some competitions through the night, it’s going to be really good,” Ms Maher said. “Our goal for the night is really to give the community some fun and hope, we’ve all had such a tough year and want to use what we have in our hands here to bring the community together.” Caroline Springs Community Carols will be held 7.30pm, Saturday, December 12. Residents draw a line By Benjamin Millar Melton residents have stepped up their fight against plans to build a series of high-voltage transmission towers through Melton and Moorabool. Dozens of protesters gathered outside an information session on the proposal at Melton Community Hall last Tuesday night to voice their concerns about the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project, a 190-kilometre stretch of high-voltage power lines from the other side of Ballarat to Sydenham. Barbara Ford, who produces grain crops and prime lamb with her husband Glenn on farmland in Plumpton, said there is

growing opposition to the proposal and an overwhelming community preference for the lines to be placed underground. “There’s certainly more awareness about it, the groundswell of opposition is from Melton right through to Ballarat,” she said. AusNet has argued that the current electricity network in western Victoria is congested and unable to take on all of the proposed renewable energy that is being generated by wind and solar farms. The design, route and location of the new infrastructure remains to be determined. AusNet is pushing for overhead lines, arguing that placing the lines underground would be more expensive and that this cost would be

passed on to energy consumers. Ms Ford said the proposal threatens to have a significant impact on their property, which sits in a Green Wedge zone and has been farmed by their family since 1950. She welcomed Planning Minister Richard Wynne’s announcement that the proposal would be subject to an Environment Effects Statement, giving the community more opportunity for input. “At the moment we have been given more time, now we are being told that the process could take up to 18 months,” Ms Ford said. “We all want there to be some consideration of what other alternatives would be available, we do not believe everything has been considered.”

State Budget: Melton Hospital, schools, roads welcomed Funding for a new Melton Hospital, significant local school upgrades, important road improvements, and an increased pool of funds for growth areas are welcome announcements for the City of Melton in the State Budget released last week. Cambridge Ward with Cr Steve Abboushi I’d like to thank the residents of Cambridge ward, who re-elected me as their Councillor in October’s local government elections. It was an honour to be returned with such a strong primary vote, indicating the support and faith you have put in me to be your Council representative. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue my service, not only as an advocate and strong voice to other levels of government, but also at a grassroots level, and look forward to working with residents and local groups to make our City an even better place to live, work and play. In a great outcome for Cambridge Ward residents, Taylors Road and the Kororoit Creek Bridge crossing will open in mid-December, linking Caroline Springs and other eastern corridor suburbs directly to Aintree.

Council has begun planning infrastructure works along the Taylors Road corridor to ensure safety and improve capacity, with a range of improvements identified including; road upgrades and duplications, signalising intersections at City Vista Court, Sinclairs Road and Plumpton Road, and converting roundabouts to signalised intersections at Gourlay Road and Westwood Drive. Finally, I’d just like to take this opportunity to wish residents a very merry Christmas and a safe New Year. It’s been a tough year, and I hope 2021 brings much prosperity to you and loved ones. Together with our community, we’ve lobbied very hard for many years to achieve this next step and it’s a credit to everyone who has supported the campaign. Exford Primary School, Melton Specialist School and Diggers Rest Primary School will undergo significant upgrades worth a total of $38 million. We also have funds for important road improvements and we’ll be eligible for a share in funding for growth areas to help deliver more play spaces and facilities. These budget allocations will make a big difference to residents and we thank the State Government for this funding. As one of the fastest growing areas in the country, these sorts of projects are vital. They don’t just mean better access to health care, education, and services, they also translate into local job creation and a better lifestyle for our residents. We will continue to lobby for many additional needs. In particular, the electrification of the Melton railway line, upgrades to the Western and Melton highways, a dedicated local family violence service, and all that is needed to keep up with our city’s growth. We look forward to working with the State Government to transform the City of Melton and create a progressive future for you all. Budget cash to upgrade school By Jessica Micallef Diggers Rest Primary will be upgraded brick by brick. As part of the 2020-21 state budget, $3.2 million has been allocated to Diggers Rest Primary School to upgrade and modernise, including the administration block. Principal Sheridan Thomas said the money would go a long way to improve learning environments at the school. “We are a fantastic school with beautiful grounds and modern classrooms, however we are limited by the number of spaces that we are able to use,” she said.

“This money will allow us to grow as our community does and to continue to provide high quality education for all our students. “Our purpose is to empower our students to excel through a culture of high expectations, purposeful relationships and challenge and support. “This money will be put towards fixing buildings and developing new learning spaces that our staff and students deserve.” Sunbury MP Josh Bull said as students returned to the classrooms after a year of remote learning, it was important they had “fantastic and new” learning spaces. “Families in Diggers Rest have done a

phenomenal job in supporting students to learn from home,” he said. “As kids return to their classrooms, we want to make Diggers Rest Primary School better than before. “Not only will this make sure our kids are getting a great education, it will also create new local jobs.” Education Minister James Merlino said the state government was delivering more than 1400 school upgrades across Victoria. “This is an investment in our kids and their future because every child, no matter where they go to school, deserves access to state-of-the-art facilities,” he said.

A picnic to remember The hospitality sector is bouncing back from a horror year with plans to give the community a summer to remember. Eynesbury Homestead is among a number of Melton and Moorabool venues hoping to put a difficult 2020 to bed by enticing people back with new and welcome offerings. The operators of the heritage property have introduced ‘The Great Eynesbury Eat Out’ as a way visitors can enjoy the location while maintaining appropriate social distancing. The easing of coronavirus restrictions has also paved the way for the opening of the homestead’s new restaurant Ms Peacock, which brings the tastes of Italy to the property. Resimax Group chief executive Steve Hooker said converting Eynesbury’s homestead into a dining venue with extensive outdoor options was a way to attract people to visit from across

Melbourne’s west and beyond. He said the vision had always been to create a contemporary restaurant within the elegant Victorian-era homestead, but COVID-19 has forced them to also consider other ways to accommodate diners safely. “Luckily, the property is beautiful, with plenty of picnic tables and stretches of lawn for people to spread out and enjoy lunch or dinner,” he said. “There’s the chance for guests to dine al fresco next to the waterfall, by the golf course or take in the beauty of the forest that borders the estate for a picnic they’ll remember.” The Ms Peacock kitchen is headed by former Raffles chef Gagan Bhatnagar, who trained in Naples to perfect his skills at the woodfire pizza oven. Amazon delivers jobs By Benjamin Millar More than 300 new jobs will be delivered to the Melton area when global retail giant Amazon Australia opens a huge new local distribution centre next year. Amazon Australia announced on Friday it will open a second Melbourne fulfilment centre in Ravenhall in late 2021, creating about 200 jobs during construction and 300 ongoing roles on completion. The new centre in Dexus’ Horizon 3023 estate will be 37,000 square metres – almost double the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground – and capable of holding up to six

million items. The new centre will be Victoria’s second Amazon site, joining Dandenong South, and helping Amazon more than double its local operating footprint. Amazon Australia operations director Craig Fuller said the new site will enable Amazon to expand its range and speed up shipping to local customers. “We’re proud to have played a unique role in supporting our Victorian customers during this unprecedented time, helping them to get the items they need for their families without leaving their homes,” he said. “Furthermore, we are dedicated to

enriching and giving back to the communities in which we operate and we look forward to working with Melton City Council, and the surrounding schools and local community groups, to create impactful community programs.” Melton council chief executive Kelvin Tori said having Amazon in Ravenhall would benefit all involved, including local residents. “Amazon’s decision to base its new fulfilment centre here makes great business sense and is a massive win for local jobs growth,” he said. “To have an industry leader and major employer like Amazon invest in the City of Melton demonstrates the outstanding

opportunities our city’s prime location and highly skilled workforce provides. “As one of Australia’s fastest growing cities, it’s investment like this that will strengthen our economy and help ensure more local families can find work close to home.” Economic Development Minister Tim Pallas said Amazon’s investment in a second fulfilment centre is providing welcome new job opportunities in a suburban growth area. “We welcome this investment as a clear indicator of confidence in the state and attracting investment from significant global companies, such as Amazon, is critical to drive our economic recovery,” he said.

Ingredients 125ml honey 125g butter 3 cups rolled oats 1 cup Rice Bubbles 1 cup sultanas

1/2 cup apricots (chopped) 1/2 cup desiccated coconut 1/4 cup pepitas 1/4 cup sugar (optional)

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). 2. Grease and line a slice tray (31cm x 22cm) with baking paper. 3. Combine honey and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until butter melts and combines with honey. 4. Bring to the boil and cook for 2 minutes or until syrup thickens slightly. Remove from heat. 5. Combine remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Pour over the hot syrup and stir to combine. 6. Spoon into prepared pan and press firmly to make sure the mixture will stick together. 7. Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden. Cool and then refrigerate until well chilled and cut into slices (makes 24 slices). TIP: Try making these with different fruits. Cobblebank on the rise By Benjamin Millar Cobblebank’s future is looking bright with work well under way in a thriving new community hub. The state government last week announced $75 million towards securing a site for the promised new hospital within the Cobblebank Metropolitan Activity Centre, one of Australia’s fastest growth areas. It comes as works on the new Cobblebank Village shopping centre rapidly progress ahead of the anticipated mid-2021 grand opening. Located opposite Western BACE on Ferris Road, the Coles-owned centre will be anchored by a 3600 square metre market-style Coles supermarket, featuring instore bakery, large gourmet deli and a fresh produce area, alongside a new 200 square metre Liquorland. The centre is also due to include a gymnasium, pharmacy, medical and dental services as well as a café and restaurant, among a further 2000 square metres of specialty retail stores. A Coles spokesperson said the new supermarket and retail project has created hundreds of construction jobs and will support more than 100 retail jobs upon completion. “The development is scheduled to open mid-2021 and represents a multimillion-dollar investment in Melbourne’s west.” The shopping centre will sit within the rapidly growing Atherstone community, a joint Lendlease and City of Melton development expected to be home to about 15,000 residents. Tom Trevaskis, Lendlease’s head of development in Victoria, said the delivery of core infrastructure and essential services is at the heart of creating a sustainable community. “We are helping to create new landmarks and places that will enhance the daily lives of our residents and those from the broader surging Melton population,” he said.

Police briefs Speedster arrested

A 22-year-old Kings Park man has been remanded in custody and his car impounded after he was detected reaching speeds up to 180km/h through Melton to escape from police on Sunday night. At 8.10pm, Melton Highway Patrol members detected a green Ford sedan being driven at 142km/h in High Street, Melton between Coburns Road and Station Street. They attempted to intercept the car but it sped away along Melton Valley Drive and Melton Highway, continuing onto High Street and through a fence onto the Western Freeway. Due to his front tyres being blown out and damage caused to the vehicle the man left the car on foot, but was arrested attempting to run away.

Armed robbery charge

A Bacchus Marsh man has been charged with the armed robbery of a service station in Cobden in the state’s west. Police allege the 28-year-old walked into a service station on Camperdown-Cobden Road about 8.14pm last Monday, threatening the attendants with a knife and demanding cash. Detectives arrested the 28-year-old Bacchus Marsh man last Tuesday and charged him with armed robbery. He has been remanded in custody until February. Just outside the nearby busy shopping strip, Melton Botanic Garden provides a quiet oasis in the heart of the rapidly growing Melton area. The gardens are lovingly maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers known as Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden, including Mark Sesil (pictured left). Almost 20 years of loving care has created a welcoming natural backdrop in which visitors can walk, scoot or ride bikes along the trail and around the lake as they take in the diverse flora and fauna including more than 100 species of eucalyptus. As well as providing residents with a green open space to enjoy, the gardens provide a natural habitat for a diverse range of birds, insects and reptiles. For many, this Christmas will act as a release valve for a year’s worth of extraordinary pressure. And after everything we’ve endured to stop the spread of COVID-19, we certainly deserve some rest and relaxation. But it’s also vital that we are aware that the difficulties of the year don’t just disappear because of the festive season – and for some people, they can get worse. In a normal year, the risk of suicide, dangerous behaviour and mental health issues increase around Christmas. This year we need to be particularly vigilant. Even as social restrictions ease, financial, employment and personal pressures remain, and mental health issues cannot be turned off like a tap. ‘Suicide’ is one of our most socially taboo words. Yet suicide is the leading cause of death for young Australians and older men. LGBTIQ people are also more at risk than the general population – but suicide can affect anyone, and its triggers are complex. Our silence is part of the problem. Alertness to warning signs, and a willingness to act, are other pieces to the puzzle. Taking notice if someone’s not engaged, or if something’s not quite right, is something we can all do. And we are helping more people learn how to go a step further and ask the right questions, listen, and refer someone in need on to professional support. In close consultation with experts and the community in the higher-risk areas of Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network has developed support models and delivered training to GPs, frontline workers

community including for suicide aftercare, mentoring for LGBTIQ youth and affirmative practice training program among its recent successes. We’re also excited to be on the cusp of launching a new community awareness campaign – to not only highlight the greater risk of suicide experienced by LGBTIQ people, but to improve overall health and wellbeing, and promote more supportive and responsive communities. Mercifully, the suicide rate has not increased compared to last year so far. But during the final six weeks of lockdown there were reports of growing numbers of young people presenting to emergency departments with suicidal thoughts, or serious self-harm. We weathered the worst of lockdowns by pulling together as a community – and that’s also what we need to do to stay well and prevent suicide. With the determination shown by community, restrictions are starting to ease and this will enable many to see family this Christmas. Christmas cheer can be a veneer. Enjoy the holidays, but don’t be afraid to seek help, speak up or ask questions. Let’s stay connected and keep looking out for each other.

Speeding drivers on police radar The Speeding Has Consequences campaign aims to remind motorists to focus on the road and their speed when driving. Road policing adviser Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol says speeding on our roads has consequences for the driver. “If you’re caught speeding, no matter how much over the speed limit, at the least you will receive an on-the-spot infringement, and penalty points will apply,” Sergeant Wallace says. “Excessive speeds can also include suspension of licences for three months or more and your vehicle can be impounded for at least 28 days. In extreme cases a prison sentence is a possibility. “The simple solution for avoiding any loss of points or fines is to be a safe and considerate driver. Like most things in life, it takes time and practise to become a confident driver on the road. The best thing any driver can do is to slow down and travel at a speed that is safe for the conditions. “Victoria Police will continue with a number of enforcement measures that target the small minority of drivers who put safe road users at risk.”

Gladiator fired up to take on all-comers

Just like the movie of the same name was a widescreen epic of Roman times, the eponymous Jeep is a larger-than-life depiction of the pickup version of the Wrangler SUV. And while Gladiator star Russell Crowe carries off the traditions of the Hollywood heart-throb, so the titular one-of-a-kind convertible truck does likewise with the rich heritage of the popular Jeep. Jeep pickups date back to 1947, with the Gladiator debuting Down Under in 1963, and as the only convertible truck of its kind, now comes to Australia. Ours is the first right-hand drive market in the world to receive it. Available as the well-equipped entry-level Overland and superior-specified Rubicon the dual-cab with tub serves up good on-road manners and excellent off-road performance with an unmatched open-air feeling of freedom with its detachable roof panels. Every Gladiator earns Trail Rated badging, which speaks to the vehicle’s superior off-road capabilities. Prices start at $75,450, plus on-road costs, for the Overland and nudge up to $75,450 for the Rubicon. The Overland can be fitted with a Lifestyle Adventure Package, at $3835, consisting of cargo versatility with trail rail system, lockable rear under-seat storage bin, roll-up material tonneau cover, spray-on bedliner, aux switch bank (four programable), 240A alternator, 700A maintenance-free battery and Bluetooth wireless speaker. One-hundred examples of a Gladiator Launch Edition are also on offer at $86,450. Each includes all Rubicon advantages and Lifestyle Adventure package, plus unique badging, wheels and interior highlights. panels and fender flares. Never-the-less, features are fit for purpose. The traditional seven-slot radiator grille openings have been widened to allow added air intake to cope with up to 2721kg braked trailer towing capacity. Wrangler’s removable body-colour Freedom roof panels are retained and four bolts at the top of the windscreen allow it to be folded, while the header bar between the A-pillars remains in place. Lightweight aluminium doors can also be taken off using one of the special tools supplied for the operations above. LED headlamps and tail-lights, together with foglights and daytime running lights, present a modern look all round, while under-rail lighting in the tub highlights the optional Rail Trail system designed to keep varying loads safe and secure. The Gladiator Overland gets around on 18-inch alloy wheels housed under body-colour fender flares and comes in a choice of seven standard Jeep colours, or Gobi and Gator, which are exclusive to Gladiator.

Interior

Inside are McKinley leather seats with Overland logo. Front seats are heated, as is the sports-style steering wheel. Rear seat backs can be folded to make available an illuminated storage spot, which includes a net to secure items to the cab back wall. The seat cushions fold up to reveal space for an optional lockable storage bin for use when

the roof and doors are removed. The centre console features metal highlights and is home to gearshift and transfer case levers and handbrake. Bolts on the shift, grab handles and infotainment screen surrounds emphasise Gladiator’s solid construction character.

Infotainment

The 8.4-inch dash-mounted touchscreen announces Jeep’s fourth-generation Uconnect 4 system and is located on top of the centre stack. Improvements include quicker start-up times and better screen resolution. Satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and a nine-speaker Alpine premium audio, plus a separate 7-inch multi-view driver information display, make up an extensive equipment list. A portable Bluetooth wireless speaker behind the rear seat is also available. The ability to charge up to three additional devices is a boon in remote locations. A further confidence booster out bush, standard on Rubicon, is a forward-facing camera, which can clearly pick out obstacles ahead. Engines / transmissions The Gladiator makes use of Jeep’s proven 3.6-litre Pentastar engine putting out 209 kW of power and 347 Nm across a wide torque band, the latter necessary for work in extreme situations off road. It has an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

As far as driving is concerned the Gladiator belies its bulk, which is highlighted by its 13.6-metre turning circle. On the road it behaves like a much smaller vehicle, keeping up with traffic even in stop-start going in town. On the highway, the long wheelbase (3488 mm) ensures the pickup irons out any blemishes in road surfaces, the well-tuned suspension and cabin comfort providing little occupants can complain about. As for fuel consumption, the story is not so comfortable, though not unexpected for the powertrain in use. Jeep claims a combined urban / highway petrol consumption of 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres for the Gladiator. On test, the Overland chalked up 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres cruising on motorways, while it reached 15 litres per 100 around town. Off-road help comes in the shape of Selec-Speed Control, standard with the eight-speed tranny. This manages vehicle speed in ‘4LO’ during heavy going without the driver having to use the accelerator or brake. Selec-Speed is activated via a button on the dash and can be varied between one and 8 km/h using the AutoStick shift. The ingenious roll-up tonneau cover, which incorporates metal crossmembers, works a treat to cover loads taking up varying amounts of tub space. Well done, Jeep.

Summing up

While the Overland is capable of taking on a variety of extreme off-road conditions, for those keen to press on to the ultimate test, the added investment in the Rubicon, with its rock-hopping ability, would appear worthwhile.

SPORT Rupertswood looks at the positives Rupertswood Cricket Club is taking the positives out of a tough year which has put sport on the backburner. With COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns a big part of the year, Rupo has kept things ticking over behind the scenes. Captain-coach Andrew Pizaro said it was about looking at the opportunities and getting the club in the right place so it could go from strength to strength. “Not just in sport, as you look a lot of places are doing things differently and they have flourished through COVID,” he said. “A sports club can do something differently as well and it makes us reflect and see the things we can do better. “As soon as COVID hit we started having a group meeting nearly every week. We did quizzes online and started some investigation into what we could do to promote the club. “It opened the door for me to do a podcast about the club. Interviewing players, former

players and juniors. I didn’t think it would be as big as it would be.” After a delayed start to training Rupo has had some good numbers. They’ve gone from four to five senior teams with a good junior program. Pizaro has also taken the opportunity to change training, with a focus on centre wicket practice. Several players have come into the Johnstone Shield side that just missed out on finals last season. Tristen Taylor-White steps up after playing in the lower grades as he had a gap year from serious cricket. Keegan Guy, who plays football at Rupertswood, has slotted straight in, while Shane Abdilla, who has done plenty of work with the junior side, has decided to take his cricket more seriously. Matthew Castle, who had the past season off, also returns. The club had recruited Corey Woolley, but he returned to the Sunbury Kangaroos after they lost a number of players.

Pizaro said he was happy with where things were sitting. “We’ve got all the pieces in the right place,” he said. “Bert Van Den Heuvel is back as my assistant coach and that role is crucial. He’s up there with my best assistant coaches. “I couldn’t be happier with where things are.” Having put some plans into place the past couple of years, Pizaro said he was still aiming high to try and win a premiership. “It never goes out of my mind,” he said. “I set the bar high.” Rupertswood started its season with a win against Wallan. Maintaining the Roar By Tara Murray Sunbury is confident its side will shape up well in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 season. Runners-up in division 5 in their first season in the VTCA, the Roar has stuck with a similar line-up as it looks to go one better in the higher division. New coach Scott Yardley said they were pleased with how things were looking to start the season. Yardley, who is in his third stint as coach of the club, replaces Craig Ballinger, who stood down from the captain-coach role due to other commitments. “It was a good, nice sharp pre-season and then we were into it,” Yardley said. “We’ve stuck with what we had and we’re confident in that and we have plenty of juniors coming through. “It’s about developing the youth and we’ve got a good batch of under-17s.”

Yardley said they had looked to add one new player, Jack Landt. But he will miss the season after signing to play football in the Northern Territory. Yardley said they would get an idea of where the top side sits in the competition over the first few weeks. He said there was plenty of motivation to win a premiership after so many close misses. Last season, the Roar was just two wickets away from claiming first innings points in the division 5 grand final after the first two days. The second weekend of play was cancelled due to COVID-19, with Moonee Valley awarded the premiership for being the higher-ranked team. “We’re still hoping to play finals as a minimum and we are confident that we can get there with what we have,” Yardley said. “St Andrews [who they played round one] played in the grand final last year and they’ve recruited well, so it shows us we’re in the ball park. “The bowlers could be playing in higher

grades, so we’ve just got to get the runs on the board for them to bowl at.” The Roar won their opening round match against St Andrews with the bowlers doing the job as they defended just 104. Yardley said they always expected low scores early in the season and were confident of getting the win defending everything over 100. He was happy with how new captain Stephen Treweek went in his first game in the role. The Roar will only get stronger with last season’s captain-coach Craig Ballinger starting the season in the second XI. Yardley said Ballinger remains one of their premier batters, he just needed to get a few hits under his belt to start the season. With an influx of numbers this season, the Roar is fielding an extra senior team, with three teams playing in the VTCA and two in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Gerard Hillier will take on a dual role at the Wyndham Devils after being named as the Devils’ Big V women’s state championship coach. Hillier was recently appointed as the association’s player and coach development manager and the experienced coach was last month named the women’s coach. Championship-winning coach Reece Porter previously held both roles before moving to Sydney. Hiller said he was excited to take on the roles. He previously coached Southern Peninsula’s state champ side, has coached at national level in 3x3 and has been part of Basketball Victoria’s high-performance team. “It was something that was flagged early in the interview process,” Hillier said about doing both roles. “I still had to go through the process separately. “I’m pumped to take over what has been such a successful program over the last couple of years, and equally as excited to promote some of the Wyndham local youngsters in to a more senior role within our program to ensure that our success continues well in to the future.” The Devils will start training this week. Hillier said while he’s coached against many of the players, it was good to finally meet them. The core group of local players – Georgia Tauschke, Sam Moodie, Lauren Jones and Jess Slade – are all returning. Hillier said there were a number of new additions, which would likely be announced in the new year. He said they were still clear on what the league will decide in relation to overseas players. The youth league women’s team will join the senior team for the start of pre-season. Hillier said the two teams would work together for several months. “As a coaching group we want six young girls who can slide between the two programs,” he said. “We’ll look to see who best suits that role.” John Dorge, who was appointed for the 2020 season, remains the men’s coach. Grant Duca will lead the youth men side, while Corey Michailidis steps up into the role of youth women head coach. Tara Murray

Name change reflects club diversity Victorian Turf Cricket Association club Footscray Angliss hopes its name change will better reflect its diversity. The club, which will celebrate its 90th anniversary next year changed its name from Footscray ANA during the off season. The change was first raised by vice-president Rohan James at the club’s annual general meeting in July and was discussed with members, life members, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and Maribyrnong council. ANA stood for the Australian Natives’ Association, which was formed in the 1870s and was limited to white men born in Australia. “I brought it up as it was a personal issue for me,” James said. “I found the ANA and linkage to the white Australia policy … quite disrespectful to the

nation’s first people. The diversity at our club is massive … I didn’t think a name like ANA represented our club.” James’ point hit a nerve with new junior co-ordinator Michael Cox. Cox, who has been involved at the club for 35 years, has been trying to set up the club’s first all-girls team. “From what Rohan and his brother Jason shared at the AGM, I thought my possibility of inclusion for everyone was contradicted by the Australian Natives Association acronym. “If we want a women’s team, this association would not have allowed them to take on leadership roles, I saw that as contradicting what our club is about. “I couldn’t really fathom the idea. We’re such an inclusive club and these things are going

on around the club which are all great but essentially, my mum who came to Australia in the 1950s wouldn’t have been allowed in as she didn’t speak English.” Treasurer Spiros Koziaris said it took him some time to come around to the decision, but he knows it’s the right one. “I don’t think anyone has seen the past players or officials or anyone involved in the club as a racist or associated with what the Australian Natives Association stood for or represents,” he said. “We don’t believe our history is clouded by people behaving that way. There was some reluctance to change it as we were all getting branded as racists, because of what ANA once stood for. “Once we heard from the various people at

New era for Clubbers For the first time in a long time, there’s a little bit of an unknown factor surrounding Yarraville Club in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. A perennial grand finalist and premiership contender, the Clubbers have had a summer of change. They’ve got a new captain-coach in Mitch Johnstone, while three of the club’s biggest names – Emmett Bronca, Andrew Cullen and Adam Contessa – have all retired. They were hit for another loss when former state player Will Sheridan decided that he couldn’t commit a month out from the season. Johnstone sees the changes as a challenge, but also an opportunity. “It’s a little bit of an unknown how we will go this year,” he said. “We’ve got an established senior core, but it’s the young faces that are just as exciting. “We might sneak under the radar in an even competition. Anyone can beat anyone and the shorter the format, normally means the closer the competition.”

Johnstone is the big inclusion into the side, having played second XI premier cricket for Essendon in recent years. Chris Martin, who has captained Geelong West, is the other big in. Martin, an all-rounder, will help offset the loss of Sheridan. Johnstone said other players would get more opportunities with the key departures. “There’s guys who have played in the twos and guys who played in the ones and played bits and pieces roles,” he said. “Now they might bat in the top four and bowl first change. There’s opportunities that aren’t normally there. “The guys are excited. Daniel Janka played on the weekend and didn’t get a whole lot of opportunities, but has done everything right. “Guys like Luke Destito, Connor Poulton and Allister Powell. They’ve had fantastic pre-seasons and will be thrown in the deep end. “To play finals we need them to go to the next level.” Despite the change over in the team, Johnstone said they were keen to keep the high standards intact on the field. Since the 2003-04 season, the Clubbers have made 14 grand finals, winning 10 of them. The Clubbers made last season’s grand final which was cancelled halfway through due to COVID-19. The Clubbers were the higher-ranked team in the final, but St Albans was awarded the premiership after it successfully appealed the result due to the wickets being worked on overnight between day one and two.

Williamstown has started its list announcements for next season with a bang, adding two former AFL players to its squad. Former Hawthorn player Teia Miles and Greater Western Sydney big man Tom Downie were announced as new signings last week ahead of the new-look VFL and East Coast second-tier competition. Miles played 12 games for Hawthorn before being delisted at the end of 2019. He put in some strong performances at AFL and VFL level and is known for his elite work rate and ability to use the ball. Seagulls general manager of football Stephen Soulsby said they were pleased to sign Mileswho who had signed with Geelong’s VFL side for 2020 before the season didn’t go ahead. “To have someone of Teia’s calibre come on board for 2021 is a great outcome for us,” Soulsby said. “He’s someone that can cover a number of positions for us, gives us plenty of versatility around the ground and will continue to set high standards around our club.” Downie played nine matches for the Giants before retiring in 2016. He played with Victorian Amatuer Football Association club Old Scotch last year and led them to a Premier B grand final. He kicked 37 goals and was named in the team of the year and won the GT Moore Medal as the competition’s best and fairest player. Standing at 203 centimetres, Downie is a major coup for the Seagulls as a big-bodied leading ruckman who can float forward and damage the scoreboard. Soulsby said Downie’s character will have a profound impact for Williamstown both on and off the field. “Having Tom come on board is really exciting for us heading into the 2021 season,” he said. “His ability to play as a ruck/forward gives us a really dynamic look working alongside Joel Ottavi and will be a valuable asset to our midfield group with his experience at AFL level.” The Seagulls are yet to announce a coach for next season, with Andy Collins standing down after taking on a full-time teaching position.
