Teachers and staff from Caroline Chisholm Catholic College will walk the length of 127 football fields in an effort to raise money for Cancer research. The team will clock up 21 kilometres walking the school’s sports oval this weekend as part of a fundraising activity for the Walking Stars project. Principal Marco Di Cesare said the cause was close to the hearts of many staff members. “The college has been touched by several incidents of cancer, so we have decided to rally together to support our colleagues as well as others affected by this terrible disease,” Mr Di Cesare said. The school has so far raised more than $1700 towards its $2000 goal through an online campaign. “Every dollar raised gives hope for a cancer-free future,” Mr Di Cesare said. Budget a ‘game changer’ By Esther Lauaki Billions of dollars will be invested in Brimbank to help the city continue responding, recovering, and rebuilding as it emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s state budget, handed down last Tuesday, will fund a number of key projects across Brimbank – the big ticket item was a $10 billion commitment to the Melbourne Rail Link which will run through Sunshine from regional Victoria to the airport.
Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic last week said the 2020-21 state budget would be a “game changer” for the municipality. “Many state budget commitments will play a significant role in reinforcing Brimbank as an economic hub … and in helping our city respond to the health, wellbeing and socio-economic consequences of this severe and prolonged pandemic,” Cr Rasic said. “We especially welcome the … reaffirmation to begin construction of the $10 billion Melbourne Airport Rail project, via the
Sunshine Priority Precinct and the Sunshine Super Transport Hub. “This will be a game changer for our city, with up to 8000 jobs anticipated to be created.” Treasurer Tim Pallas said the government had set an ambitious target of creating 400,000 jobs over the next five years. “This is a budget built on jobs and it’s focused on people,” Mr Pallas said. “We’re using our balance sheet to assist households and to assist businesses through these difficult times.” Council also welcomed commitments to
other key projects for the Sunshine Priority Precinct, including more than $25 million towards the redevelopment of the Sunshine Law Courts and Justice Precinct. “Having the state government commit to these important projects … is a great outcome for our community,” Cr Rasic said. “Many of these will serve as anchor investments in helping us to create local jobs, support local businesses and local community outcomes.” ■ Brimbank’s
