By Goya Dmytryshchak The Department of Defence has confirmed off-site contamination from chemicals found in firefighting foams used on the RAAF Base Williams at Laverton, including in groundwater, world-listed Cheetham Wetlands and waterways discharging into Port Phillip Bay. It will now investigate the risk to residents of Williams Landing and nearby from eating home-grown fruit, vegetables, and chicken eggs. It will also look at the risk from eating fish and eels caught at Skeleton Creek and Sanctuary Lakes. A federal Department of Health fact sheet states there is “no conclusive evidence” that per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) cause cancer although some studies had shown a possible link. Luke McLeod, assistant secretary of the department’s PFAS Investigation and Management Program said Defence was not a health authority and relied on evidence that exposure to PFAS be minimised as “important health effects for individuals cannot be ruled out based on the current evidence”. He said a survey of how the community near the Laverton base used or had used bore and surface water “did not identify any users of groundwater for drinking water purposes and the general groundwater quality is not suitable for drinking water or irrigating home-grown produce, due to high levels of salinity”. “The base and surrounding

properties are serviced by mains water supplied by City West Water,” he said. “This is important, as the primary route of exposure to PFAS in humans occurs through drinking-impacted water or through consumption of food that has been exposed to impacted water or soil.” Defence started using foams containing PFAS chemicals in the 1970s for fighting high-intensity liquid fuel fires. In 2003, the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme recommended its use be restricted and, in 2004, Defence started phasing out its use. In 1999, the runways associated with RAAF Base Williams were decommissioned and the airfield sold off for urban redevelopment in what is now known as Williams Landing. A report commissioned by Defence and released this month found the chemicals had “migrated” off-base and recommends investigation into the risk to residents of larger allotments in Williams Landing and surrounds. A Defence spokesperson on Friday said the next step in the investigation was to undertake a human health and ecological risk assessment. “Specifically, Defence will further assess the potential exposure pathway via consumption of home-grown produce – fruits, vegetables and chicken eggs,” the spokesperson said. “A preliminary assessment of PFAS in soil in the area indicates that the exposure risk is low and there is no need for people to change the way they use their land.”

Footscray’s Night Heron closes By Goya Dmytryshchak Much-loved Footscray bar The Night Heron has closed despite being one of the live music venues the state government deemed worth saving. The business was among the few in the local area to receive a live music grant, totalling $60,000, due to the COVID-19 crisis. A caretaker notice recently went up in the window of the shuttered building at 228 Nicholson Street. The landlord and tenant recently underwent

mediation at the Victorian Small Business Commission. Former tenant Ben Schembri, who leased the building in May 2016 and opened in December the same year, said the venue’s closure had been devastating for he and business partner Sam Gaul. “It has been an extremely stressful time and has taken quite an emotional toll on myself, Sam and our seven employees,” he said. “After four years of long hours and hard work we are devastated to lose the business and for the community to lose yet another arts and

music venue. We are also somewhat relieved to be out of what became a very difficult situation. “We have many great memories and are humbled by the comments and messages of support since we announced the news publicly. “For the immediate future we are taking some time off and will see how the dust settles.” Ajay Rawat, whose family owns the building, said it was a “bad situation”. “We’re deciding to put it on lease, but then as you can imagine with COVID and everything people might not want to lease a hospitality outlet or venue,” he said. “We’re still deciding”

Whitten Oval upgrade funded The Western Bulldogs’ home ground will receive $36.6 million for a new EJ Whitten Stand, the state government announced on Sunday. The $58 million project includes broadcast-quality lights to allow AFLW games at Whitten Oval to be shown on TV in high definition. Sport Minister Martin Pakula said the funding was on top of $6 million already provided to upgrade facilities to AFLW standard and undertake detailed planning for the project. “This project is a massive win for the people of the west and not just football fans, with the needs of the community central to the planning and delivery of the redevelopment,” he said. “It’s fantastic footy fans will be able to watch the AFLW Bulldogs and Footscray VFL teams in much improved conditions.” Bulldogs’ president Peter Gordon said the club’s ambitious plans for its West Footscray home would make the precinct the centrepiece of Melbourne’s west. “Our ultimate ambition is to make the Whitten Oval precinct the heart of the community: An everyday precinct to spectate, celebrate and discover. “The redevelopment will ensure that new generations can enjoy the Western Bulldogs’ home ground, create new and lasting memories, and retain a strong understanding of the club’s history.” Plans for the project have been submitted to Maribyrnong council.

A rotten egg smell in Brooklyn and Altona has been traced to a leak in a Veolia waste management plant. The Environment Protection Authority on Friday said it had received more than 50 complaints over two days about the odour. Veolia, which operates a liquid and hazardous and chemical waste treatment facility in McDonald Road at Brookyn, was directed to urgently fix the problem. To prepare for summer, Council will be inspecting vacant blocks and broad acreage properties from Tuesday 24 November to assess if properties are a fire risk/hazard.

The Department of Defence has published an update on the detailed environmental investigation into per - and poly - fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at RAAF Williams (Laverton) and nearby areas.

For vacant blocks, we recommend you ensure your property meets the following criteria before inspections commence: • grass, weeds or undergrowth are under 10cm in height • tree branches, leaves, green waste and/or rubbish are not on the property • bushes/shrubs are not excessively overgrown • the property is free from combustible/flammable material (such as wood piles, dried grass, empty containers, and derelict vehicles)

Boost for Williamstown treasure By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown treasure, the Pirates Tavern at Seaworks, has scored an $80,000 state government live music venue grant. The hidden gem, behind Seaworks at 82 Nelson Place, is the clubhouse of the Williamstown Maritime Association. The not-for-profit association started in 2004 to convert the old Port of Melbourne Authority site into a working maritime precinct: Seaworks. About this time last year, the tavern had Jamaica’s Red Stripe beer on tap to coincide with the Jamaican Music and Food Festival.

- Maurice Boyd With multiple festivals on hold due to COVID-19, association president Maurice Boyd said the Pirates Tavern would use the massive outdoor waterfront space to cater for up to 200 people as restrictions eased. “We’ve got an extended licence out in front of the tavern as part of Seaworks – Seaworks have supported us in doing that so that means we can put the extra people there. “We very definitely are very lucky. “The businesses in Williamstown can go out and grab a couple of car parks [to use for dining] but that doesn’t give them that extra space that we’ve got that ability to do. “But of course, we don’t have food there at the moment so they’ve still all got all that aspect – they can fit the people in for food.” Mr Boyd said the government funding had helped the venue survive.

Third stint as mayor for Clarke By Goya Dmytryshchak Maribyrnong’s new mayor Michael Clarke has vowed to redouble the council’s efforts and to hold a rates summit as the municipality emerges from the COVID-19 crisis. The Labor councillor for Yarraville ward has made history as the municipality’s first third-time mayor. Cr Clarke previously served as a mayor and councillor between 2006 and 2016. He wasn’t returned in 2016 but succeeded in October.

“We’ve endured the jackboot of an epidemic,” he told last week’s council meeting. “We’ve finally overcome the yoke of this virus and we will arise and we will be better and we will be stronger. “The business community must do more

than simply survive – they must thrive for the good of us all.” Cr Clarke said the council needed to look at how it could generate income and become financially sustainable outside of rates revenue. “In my role as mayor, I commit to holding a summit to explore the question of what we can do to relieve the rate burden on our community,” he said. “The strategic intent is to introduce an initiative, a solution, to reduce the calling on rates and reduce the outgoings of every rate-paying household in

our community.” He also vowed to work to prevent another disaster such as the 2018 Tottenham industrial blaze that burnt for more than a week. “What we’ve seen in the past is unbridled, rampant self-serving behaviour,” he said. “What we’ve seen with the illegal storing of toxic waste by what is nothing less than a criminal element is seeing our community at risk.” Cr Clarke is the Friends of Cruickshank Park secretary and has organised the Kingsville Christmas carols event for more than 20 years.

Councillor makes history Newly elected Maribyrnong councillor Jorge Jorquera has made history as the first member of the Victorian Socialist party elected to local government in Victoria. The Maidstone resident, who is a university curriculum adviser, arrived in Australia at primary school age after his family fled Chile’s Pinochet dictatorship. He said he would bring the party’s socialist values to bear on issues such as rates, rents and unemployment. “We ran for council because we felt that ordinary working families, migrant families, young people and elderly citizens, especially in the context of the pandemic, are massively under-represented from the point of view of their needs in local government,” Cr Jorquera said. “Our general view is that there should be very clear financial support for people with hardship cases. “We definitely think there should be even greater differentiation than there is now

with rates in terms of businesses vis-a-vis homeowners. “Over time … we’d like to investigate things like why it is that the same rates are paid by family-home owners as by multi-property investors.” The soccer coach said defending public space and supporting community sport were also personally important to him. Cr Jorquera received 1632 (8.76 per cent) of first preference votes and was elected to Yarraville ward on preferences after two recounts were conducted. At one point during distribution of preferences, only two votes separated Cr Jorquera from former Labor councillor, Martin Zakharov, according to the Victorian Electoral Commission. Hobsons Bay council is asking people what they love most about Spotswood and South Kingsville in a bid to make these places better. People are also being asked about the main challenges and priorities for change.

The council is seeking views from residents, businesses and visitors as part of its Better Places project, which uses feedback to guide future investment and projects. A similar survey was conducted in Laverton, with more than 1500 ideas submitted,

including suggestions for a splash park, art trails and fast-tracked tree planting. As reported by Star Weekly, community group Better West has collected more than 1000 signatures on a Change petition calling for part of Hall Street at Spotswood to be turned into a park and plaza. “The people of Spotswood, in Hobsons Bay, are being provided with a link to the Federation bike trail and access to a new park at Stony Creek, through the West Gate Tunnel Project,” the petition states. “This gives Hobsons Bay City Council a once

in a lifetime opportunity to redesign Hall Street to create a community park, a cool, green bike and pedestrian link to Stony Creek, and build Hudsons Road as a safe bike destination for Hobsons Bay and our neighbours in Yarraville.” The council is seeking feedback on Spotswood and South Kingsville until December 13. Rainbows of hope Scienceworks reopened this week with a rainbow theme to mark the end of a cloudy period. The Spotswood education and tourism drawcard had operated virtually during months of the second coronavirus lockdown and now people can see the real thing. It’s a pot of gold with new summer programs as COVID-19 restrictions ease. General manager Jonathan Shearer said the venue wanted to showcase the “sharing of rainbows” that was seen across Melbourne during the first lockdown. “We want to welcome Melbourne back to the awesome experience Scienceworks can offer but we also want to make sure that people are aware that we are taking hygiene super seriously and being super safe with it,” he said. “We’re keeping our rainbow theme, that we’ve been running with throughout lockdown, to try to bring back a bit of hope.

“You’ll find things like our rainbow scavenger hunt, rainbows dotted throughout the exhibition; we’ve even painted the amphitheatre to be a giant rainbow. “Most of the things that people love will still be here for the exhibitions and programs and planetarium shows.” One of the highlights that will literally blow kids away is the Air Playground, with giant fans, an ‘aircade’ and aerodynamics demonstrated by designing paper planes. By Goya Dmytryshchak Australia’s most elite troops say this Remembrance Day the COVID-19 global pandemic has shone a different light on the meaning of sacrifice. Recently retired SAS Major Mark Bainbridge, who spent most of his 22 years’ service in the special forces on multiple tours to the Middle East, said this year had brought into perspective the meaning of real hardship. “I think Remembrance Day this year helps keep perspective on things,” the Newport RSL member said.

“If you think back, all those generations, and saw the commitment and sacrifice they made over a number of years … they were so resilient. “I think, in the light of today’s current global crisis, it really helps me keep perspective on current times versus some real hardships that people have been through before.” Major Bainbridge said he also reflected on those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “I’ve had a lot of my mates and colleagues killed in action,” he said. “Of the 41 Australians who have lost their lives overseas in the last few decades, I do know a lot of them and their families.

“So, I usually get in touch with their families and let them know we’re thinking of them.” Fellow Newport RSL member, Lieutenant Rebecca Hogan, followed her parents’ footsteps into the British navy full-time in 2002. She transferred from the UK military into the Australian navy in 2013, predominantly flying helicopters off the back of ships. “In the UK, we don’t have Anzac Day so Remembrance Day is our primary day to remember our war heroes and the armistice,” she said. “I do have many generations of family in the forces so, for me, remembrance revolves around family.

“I’ve been the one away deployed but I’ve also been the child with the parent deployed and seen the struggles that mum went through. “When dad was away doing his bit, she had to step up and be both parents to two children. “So, for me, Remembrance Day is as much about remembering the sacrifices that families have made in sending their loved ones away to the campaigns, as much as the service of the individuals themselves. “I think being ADF helped me cope with COVID a lot more … I remember my dad saying to me when we went into the first lockdown, just treat it like a deployment.”

What happens to pets in a separation? For most households having a pet join the family is an exciting time, but what happens during separation? Unfortunately, says Lucy Padula, accredited family law specialist at Anderson Family Lawyers, there’s no specific legislation in family law for dealing with pets.

“I

f there is a dispute over ownership of a pet,” Ms Padula says, “the pet is simply treated as property, and is seen in the same manner as other personal assets such as furniture, devices etc.” So what can be done to protect your pets during these difficult times, and who gets ownership in the end? She offers three options: 1. Negotiate options with all parties “As with many aspects of separation, discussing options with a former partner is always the best first step, where possible. If able to, have an open conversation with them about pets and negotiate options. Pets can also be discussed when undergoing mediation or family dispute resolution services.” Considerations suggested by Ms Padula include: • Who is best able to care for the pet (considering finances, living arrangements etc)? • Who is the pet most attached to? • Was the pet a gift for a certain family member? Was the pet purchased together or separately? • Do any children have an attachment to the pet?

There’s no specific legislation for dealing with pets in family law.

2. Consent order or financial agreement “If parties wish to create a legally binding agreement, it can include a clause about pet ownership in the terms of consent orders or a financial agreement. “Both parties need to sign the document and agree to the terms, which is then sent to the Family Court for a Registrar to review. “By contrast, a Financial Agreement is drafted by a solicitor, but is not filed with the court. There are additional

requirements for a financial agreement to take effect.” 3. Apply for a Property Order Orders can be sought with respect to pet ownership when filing an application to the court seeking a property settlement – which must be made within one year of divorce for married couples, or within two years of separation for de facto partners. Special permission from the court is needed otherwise.

“People would need to specifically seek an order regarding pet ownership. An insight into eye care Liz Muller, optometrist at Eyecare Plus Altona, was planning a big party to celebrate her 20 years in Altona this year, but COVID-19 lockdowns put paid to that. Now, she says, they’ll have a 21st party instead.

iz says 20/20 is the measurement used for ‘perfect’ eyesight, so it was a year optometrists were looking forward to. “Needless to say, it’s been a year to remember, but definitely not a year that we’d like to repeat, with allied health professionals restricted to seeing only emergency patients. “During this time, I managed the care of patients who had their appointments cancelled from the Eye and Ear hospital and other clinics. These patients required review of glaucoma, sudden onset of blurred vision, eye pain and other symptoms that should be attended to immediately.” Wearing glasses due to an eye turn from an early age herself gave Liz real insight and kicked off her special interest in children’s vision. “The appropriate use of glasses or contact lenses, and vision therapy when required, has helped many children to reach their full potential without the added deficit of a vision problem. “Yes,” she says, “contact lenses for kids are easier and safer than you think and can provide a lot of freedom! … my youngest patient just three months old at the time of the vision test. “This little one had hereditary cataracts, and after surgery to remove the cataracts, and wearing glasses and now contact lenses, she is happily seeing.”

Vision therapy clinic The clinic employs evidence-based in-office and home-based vision therapy programs for children and adults who have lazy and turned eyes, concussion and brain injuries, and eye alignment and tracking problems. Vivid Vision Virtual Reality training for eye teaming and lazy eye is also used.

Myopia training More common in the younger generation these days, progressive myopia (shortsighted) increases the risk of problems such as retinal detachment. Research shows that specialised contact lenses, and new spectacle lenses incorporating peripheral myopia control zones, are more effective than traditional lenses.

Embroidery queen of Kingsville Marea McGuire is loving life growing vegies and flowers in her apartment garden, playing with her beloved poodle Sarah and doing embroidery, patchwork and other crafts.

he 81-year-old Kingsville resident has a home care package with Uniting AgeWell and gets assistance three days a week from direct care worker Anthea, who Marea says has become a “great companion.” “I had a few falls and my health is not that great, so Anthea helps with the housework and is also helping me arrange all my patchwork crafts,” she says. She’s not kidding – Marea has turned her second bedroom at her spacious flat in Amarco Apartments, a Uniting AgeWell Independent Retirement Living community, into an arts and crafts room. She moved there from her Wangaratta home 20 months ago after her husband died. “I was a bit nervous living on my own in that house,” she explains. “But here I have the best of both worlds. I love my garden, I have a little community around me and I am close to public transport and shops.” Marea’s main reason for moving in was the continuum of care. Amarco abuts Uniting AgeWell’s Kingsville Community aged care residence and AgeWell Centre which offers social support services. Marea and other Amarco residents also enjoy the in-house amenities of a gym, library and café. Marea is among the many clients on a home care package with Uniting AgeWell in Melbourne’s west. – with many in Melbourne’s west – is now also delivering home care services to 900 clients in the Brimbank council area, as well as those in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. Rohan Bond, Uniting AgeWell program manager West Metro Home Care says with 80 per cent of clients living alone, extra welfare checks and one-on-one visits are

being done to ensure they’re OK. The upside is that many people adjusted their home care packages to buy electric beds, mobility scooters and install ramps in their homes to enable them to live more independently during isolation. So now that things are getting back to normal, they’ll be able to continue living their easiest best lives possible.

Clients can also access Uniting AgeWell’s North West Metro Short-Term Restorative Care package – an early intervention program that aims to reverse and/or slow functional decline in older people and improve their wellbeing. This provides a multi-disciplinary range of goal-oriented services at home, including occupational and physiotherapy and equipment needed, for up to 56 paid days. Rohan says the pandemic has taken its toll on family carers who reported being exhausted, with a growing need for respite care. Uniting AgeWell provides respite in the home as well as centre-based respite. And to meet this demand, all Uniting AgeWell residential communities, including Kingsville, Manor Lakes and Preston, are offering respite stays, with a special package offering a three week stay for the price of two. Not only does it give the carers a break, but many of those coming in for short term stays love the camaraderie and support so much they end up staying. Planting the seeds of growth Ms Stephanie Banks, deputy principal wellbeing at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, says the pros and cons of single-sex and mixed education are constantly being debated, but believes the college offers a practical solution.

United’s chase for silverware The excitement is building in Victoria’s west ahead of the 2020-21 A-League season, according to Western United’s head coach Mark Rudan.

hirteen months on from its historic A-League debut, Western United is gearing up for what should be another thrilling year, on and off the pitch. In its inaugural season, the green and black were remarkably one game away from reaching the A-League grand final, going down 2-0 to Melbourne City in the penultimate match. “We’re hoping to go two better this year and cement ourselves in Australian football history,” Mark says. “There’s the right amount of belief within the squad to go all the way. “Knowing that we were one step away from the grand final last year, there’s no stopping us in terms of our belief – nothing should stop us reaching that next level. “We want to be better; we want to be there on the last day of the season. “Clearly the objective is to lift the cup this season and we want to raise the bar with everything that we do. “We’ve been able to retain the majority of our squad which is a good thing. I think it’s a good thing that the players understand each other.” During the off-season, United was boosted by the signing of young attacker Lachie Wales, who joined from last season’s runners-up, Melbourne City. Mark also confirms that the club is working on strengthening its squad even

further, to give the best chance of winning silverware. “We’re very close to agreeing on a defensive midfielder,” Mark continues. “If you look at the two most successful teams last year, arguably the best two defensive midfielders were Josh Brillante and Luke Brattan, so that’s an area where

we need to strengthen.” United will again play its home games across multiple venues, giving fans in different parts of Melbourne and the west a chance to see attacking and exciting football. Geelong and Ballarat will host multiple games, as it did last season, further building the connection between professional football

SPORT Chancellor excited by Jets opportunity New Western Jets coach Robbie Chancellor is looking forward to the opportunity ahead of him with the NAB League club. Having been in the AFL coaching system for a number of years, most recently at St Kilda for nine years, Chancellor decided to look for a new role with AFL clubs needing to restructure due to cuts. Chancellor said the pathway system was an exciting one to be a part of. He will coach both the boys and girls under-19 teams in a full-time role. “I have been working in the AFL for quite a while and to be part of the pathways with both girls and boys is an exciting opportunity,” he said. “I knew I was in a little bit of trouble with the cap squeeze. I was proactive and being a young coach, the time was right to look for something else. “The knock on me was I had experience as an assistant coach at AFL level, but I hadn’t

coached my own team … now I get to coach my own team twice.” Chancellor said he had a little bit of experience with the pathway system and the western suburbs through his role at St Kilda. He said the western suburbs potentially had a lot of untapped talent. “That’s the exciting part,” he said. “It’s an exciting area and very multicultural,” he said. “There are some really good players in the area and sport is a big part of the community out there.” Chancellor said his focus would be to make sure the two programs were successful. “The St Kilda assistant coaches in the men’s did rotate through and do some trainings with the AFLW team the last couple of years, so I’ve done bits and pieces. “It’s a great opportunity to get to know the difference between coaching boys and girls. “I want to set the club up as the Western Jets

Football Club and it doesn’t matter whether you play for the boys or girls.” As part of his new job, Chancellor has taken on the head football coaching role at Maribyrnong Sports Academy. “I wish I had the opportunity to go there when I was growing up,” he said. “Sport is an important part of growing up for young boys and girls. There’s the opportunity to work on team work, camaraderie and it helps round them as people. “It’s an opportunity to work with some of the younger players as well.” Chancellor said he hoped to begin pre-season within the next month, especially for the girls who kick off their season in February. “To get them training is exciting for those kids, boys and girls who have not had a season of footy and were doing school from home.” Tara Murray

Saints eye finals berth By Tara Murray New St Albans coach Brenton Cook is intent on maintaining the club’s standing as a premiership contender. Cook, who is in his third full season for the Saints, takes over the coaching role from Robert Nikolic, who stood down after two seasons as captain-coach. Cook has previously played and coached in Western Australia and New South Wales. “Rob stepped down at the end of last year,” he said. “He’s done some really good work at the club the last two years. “I want to continue the club in the right direction, the direction Rob wanted to take it.” The Saints have climbed up the ladder in recent seasons and were awarded the senior premiership last season. The grand final between the Saints and Yarraville Club was in the balance after the first

weekend of play, before the second weekend was cancelled due to COVID-19. The Clubbers were the highest-ranked side in the grand final and were named premiers. The Saints successfully appealed the decision, after illegal work was done by the Clubbers on the wicket between day one and two and were awarded the premiership. Cook said they were yet to celebrate the premiership. “We thought we were in a good spot regardless of what happened at the end of the day. “We were going into the final in pretty good form having knocked off the Doutta Stars the week before. “It’s not the way to end a final, not getting to finish it off.” Cook said they were keen to take that strong form into this season. Trevor Bauer, who batted at three for the Saints, is the only out at this stage. Cook said

he might return to the field later in the season. “He’s having a break,” Cook said. “He has other commitments and travels from Mordialloc, so he’ll see how it goes.” A few former players have returned and will add depth across the club as they look to field three strong sides. Cook said they were hoping some of the younger players kept progressing through into the senior side. “We’ve got some younger guys who are coming through. There’s about three under-18s that we would like to keep bringing through. “Yuvraj Singh is starting to come of age and Kyle Chamberlain played most of last season in the seconds. “Shaun McAndrew is a keeper and batsman. We’re really keen to develop them and bring them along when the opportunities arise.” The Saints kick off their season on Saturday against the Doutta Stars. All matches this season will be one-dayers.

New Wyndham Basketball Association general manager Craig Armstead believes there’s plenty of room to grow the sport in the municipality. Armstead, who has had a long involvement in sports administration, was appointed to the general manager role in September. Having spent recent years working in football at the Essendon District Football League and then Williamstown, Armstead is enjoying the return to basketball. He was previously president of the Melbourne Tigers and has worked for former NBL club the South Dragons. “It’s been a unique start to the job,” Armstead said. “It was four to five weeks without meeting any of the staff face-to-face. “There were several things for me that interested me in the job. Part of that is population growth and the last census shows it’s a big area. It’s growing and it’s culturally diverse. There’s plenty of challenges and opportunities. “I’m passionate about sports participation and administration and I love basketball. My aim is to use my knowledge and experience to continue to build on the WBA.” Armstead said there was a big opportunity to grow the sport in Wyndham on a local and state level. “I’m keen and excited by the opportunity,” he said. “Basketball is underrepresented in the west of Melbourne and there’s opportunities and challenges around that. We’ve got the under-18 championships and the Kevin Coombs Cup at Eagle Stadium next year, which is a significant event. “It’s one piece that will allow us to showcase the west of Melbourne. We want it to be a legacy and use it to help drive participation and awareness in the west of Melbourne.” Armstead said the association would love to get involved with the state’s top competition, NBL1, down the track. Some training has resumed for the Wyndham sides, with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Armstead said they were hoping to get full competitions back in the next four weeks. Tara Murray

Brand ticks the boxes ahead of AFL draft Calder Cannons defender Cody Brand moulds his game on Essendon legend Dustin Fletcher and he could soon find himself following in his footsteps. Brand is seen as one of the top key defender prospects ahead of next month’s AFL draft ,with many clubs watching the key position player. Essendon has the right to match any bid for Brand, a Next Generation Academy player linked to the Bombers, on draft night. A die-hard Bombers supporter, playing for Essendon would be a dream come true for Brand. “I grew up supporting Essendon and we’re an Essendon family through dad’s bloodline,” he said. “It would honestly be a dream come true to play for the Bombers … but I’m open to any club. “Anywhere would be a dream come true for me to play the sport I love, and do it professionally at the highest level. “I dreamt about it as a little kid running

around the backyard, but I’m trying to stay as calm as possible.” As an NGA member, Brand spent time with Essendon during the pre-season and has been in touch with them during the year. He also had Fletcher, who played 400 AFL games for the Bombers, as his backline coach for school football at PEGS. Brand said he was lucky to have been able to learn from Fletcher. “He has definitely taught me a few of his tricks along the way and showed me how to go about your football on field and off field with game vision, how you can improve your defensive capabilities and one-on-one skills.” Tony Lucas, who coached Brand at the Sunbury Lions, is another person who made a big impact on his career. “I played my juniors at Macedon,” Brand said. “I came back to Sunbury to play under Tony Lucas in the under-18s in 2018. Credit to him, he pushed me pretty hard during that year and probably developed me into the player I am physically and mentally today.”

Brand, who is sitting his year 12 exams, said this year was about working on the areas he could. “I’ve done a fair bit of work in the previous years, hopefully to get my name read out on draft night,” he said. “I took on a training program put together by our high performance manager at Vic Metro. It was a pretty rigorous program. “I’ve tried to show my progression through lockdown. Speaking to clubs, they’ve been asking what have you been doing to stay fit and improving on your inadequacies. “I’ve been trying to tick off little boxes.” Brand was selected for the AFL combine and tested alongside other Victorian players earlier this month. A hamstring strain meant he couldn’t do all the testing. While the nerves have started to set in for Brand, he said his year 12 study was keeping him focused. Tara Murray

Coleman joins Footscray By Tara Murray After a long drawn out off season, Footscray is ready for the return of matches in Victorian Premier Cricket. Like cricketers across Melbourne, the Bulldogs have been left off the field, with COVID-19 restrictions delaying pre-season training and matches. Bulldogs coach Allan Wise said everyone had been keen to return to training and get things under way. “It has been a long drawn out off season for everyone, not just in a cricket sense,” he said. “Everyone is excited to have normality after an abrupt end to last season. “We’ve started training and working towards a start date.” Wise said there hadn’t been much player turnover across all four grades, which has proved beneficial with such a short pre-season and limited time to get to know people. The Bulldogs though have one big recruit in Melbourne Stars bowler Jackson Coleman.

Wise said with the competition now only one-day matches due to COVID-19, Coleman was set for an even bigger role. “We had some pressure with injuries last season, especially losing our recruit Jake Reed to an ACL injury. “Someone like Jackson is a mature bowler who has been around for a number of years and has played state one-day cricket and T20 cricket. “He is an experienced recruit which is heightened with only one-day cricket, which is somewhat a speciality for him.” Coleman is likely to play the opening games before heading off for his BBL commitments. He will return to the Bulldogs later in the season. Wise said that period was a good chance for other players to have an opportunity. He said they would take a healthy list into the season, with several youngsters set to take the next step. “Dylan Brasher and Jordan Buckingham are in the Cricket Victoria Emerging Squad and that

is an endorsement of their improvement and continuing to give them the best opportunities. “We’ve got a couple of young players coming through the grades. It’s a good catchment area and we have a good strong list.” The Bulldogs finished last season in second spot, but lost in the opening week of the finals to Melbourne. They were due to play St Kilda in the semi-finals, which were cancelled due to COVID-19. After its win in the first week of finals, Melbourne was the highest ranked team and was awarded the premiership. Wise said they were hoping to have another strong season. “Last year our one-day form was a little bit patchy,” he said. “That format is about match winners and we think that we have them. “We improved last year in the one-day format, but our two-day form was better.” The Bulldogs start their season on November 28 against Greenvale.

The Western Rams are building on this year’s momentum ahead of next year’s Riddell District Netball League season. The Rams, which were formerly known as Rockbank, put together a strong line-up for this year but didn’t get on the court with the season cancelled due to COVID-19. A number of players who returned to the club for this year have signed on for next year. Star shooter Rebecca Hicks headlines those returning, along with Marie Bolitho, Olivia Burrow and Danni Jane Umaki. All are set to play a key role in the Rams A-grade side. Rams coach Nathan Selvidge said they were happy with how things were looking ahead of next year. “A lot of girls from the year before have recommitted and we’ve got confirmation that the girls who were supposed to come back and play this season are returning. “It’s looking like a really strong team. Getting Becca back is a step in the right direction. “She’ll make a huge improvement in the shooting end and the girls from the season before will slide in around her. “Getting the top level girls back like Becca and Deej will improve the depth, so we not just have a strong A-grade side, but B and C grade sides.” Selvidge said it was encouraging for the club that players wanted to come back. The club’s netball program has traditionally struggled, having made A-grade finals just once, in 2018, when they made it to the preliminary final. “It shows we’re doing the right thing,” Selvidge said. “We’re trying to get a good vibe around the club.” The Rams missed finals by one game in 2019, with Selvidge keen on returning to finals next year. “We’re hoping this season to be in the top three teams,” he said. “It’s a step in the right direction.” Selvidge said they were happy with the side, but they were still open to more players joining the club. He said if easing COVID-19 restrictions allow, they would like to start training in the next few weeks. The club is also hoping to get junior netball teams strted for the first time, to help create a pathway to the seniors. They are looking for players in under-9s, 11s, 13s, 15s and 17s. Tara Murray
