Support for crash victims By Benjamin Millar Friends of a Hillside family involved in a serious crash are seeking public support to help steer them through the recovery. Mark Esposito and his three boys were on their way home from school recently when an allegedly stolen truck that was fleeing from police crashed into their car on Melton Valley Drive, forcing it off the road and into a telegraph pole. All four were taken to hospital suffering serious injuries, with Mr Esposito sustaining a fractured spine. Close family friend Manny Chircop said the crash was a severe blow for the family and follows an earlier road accident that left Mr Esposito in a long coma and fighting for his life.

Mr Chircop said that his friend had lost his successful landscaping business following the first crash and the latest setback was yet another cruel twist of fate. “Mark has three fractures in his spine, but I think the biggest concern is the oldest son,
he hit his head on the windscreen and has numbness right down his side,” he said. “The youngest has a broken arm between his elbow and the shoulder.” Mr Chircop said Mr Esposito and the three boys are now back at home after stints in the hospital, but all are in a lot of pain and further surgery may still be on the cards. He has set up a GoFundMe page in a bid to help the family pay bills and put food on the table. “I had to do something he’s a good mate of mine and it made me sick,” he said. Another victim of the crash was Mr Esposito’s restored classic car, written off due to the heavy impact. “We’re part of a car club and that was his
pride and joy,” Mr Chircop said. “Mark has done a lot of work on it himself, it was the last thing he still had left from before his accident.” A 33-year-old Melton South man driving the truck that was being pursued by police allegedly attempted to flee the scene after the crash, but crashed into an embankment near the Western Highway and was arrested by police nearby. He is facing a series of charges including dangerous driving causing injury, reckless conduct endangering life, unlicensed driving and failure to render assistance. Mr Chircop said almost $30,000 has been raised to help the family but more donations would be gratefully received. Donations can be made via gofundme.com/esposito-boyssupport-fund.

Court action over toxic soil By Benjamin Millar The fight against plans to dump toxic soil in Bacchus Marsh is stepping up with two court challenges now under way. Moorabool Environment Group (MEG) last week commenced legal proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria seeking judicial review of the decision by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to approve an Environment Management Plan that paves the way for soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project to be dumped in the area.
The group argues that the plan submitted by landfill operator Maddingley Brown Coal and approved by the EPA enables millions of tonnes of potentially carcinogenic soil to be dumped near a large school and aquifers that flow into the Werribee River. “Our community and environmental health and wellbeing is placed seriously at risk by the callous conduct of the government and the EPA,” it said in a statement. “Despite repeated requests for information and consultation, the EPA ignored the key concerns of our community and MEG, denying
us procedural fairness in its shoddy process. “We will fight for what is right for our community and our local environment.” Bacchus Marsh Grammar school has also launched legal action over the controversial plan, arguing it puts the safety of staff and students at risk. Principal Andrew Neale told Star Weekly the school did not have faith in the approval process followed to date. “The key driver in relation to this is the health and wellbeing of the staff and students of Bacchus Marsh Grammar,” he said. “We feel
that the process that has been carried out by the EPA has been lacking and there are concerns about the way the approval has been granted.” Mr Neale said the school has been left with no choice but to pursue legal action. “We just don’t feel there has been an acknowledgment of our concerns.” An EPA spokesman said the Environment Management Plan (EMP) for Maddingley Brown Coal requires a thorough assessment of potential environmental impacts. The final decision on where the contaminated soil will be sent sits with the state government.

Mother, son defying the odds Tiny baby Hunter continues to defy the odds – just like his mum Chloe Zammit. Delivered by emergency cesarean on July 5 at 27 weeks, Hunter weighed little more than a block of butter at 811 grams and set a record as the smallest baby born at Joan Kirner Hospital in Sunshine. Ms Zammit and her partner Dillon’s fertility journey has been heartbreakingly difficult. “I had my daughter Marissa by cesarean at 18 and then had five miscarriages after that and we didn’t know why,” she told Star Weekly. “I fell pregnant again and it was an ectopic
pregnancy which was actually stuck in scar tissue from my first delivery. That pregnancy resulted in another miscarriage and doctors told me in 2018 that I would no longer be able to have any children.” Ms Zammit said she counted herself and Hunter “lucky to be here”. “It was a high-risk pregnancy,” she said. “When they delivered Hunter, I didn’t think I would hear him cry but he cried and I was so relieved. “I didn’t get to kiss him at all for six days and I had my first cuddle on July 12.” Hunter’s first three months were spent on a
breathing machine, having blood transfusions, COVID-19 tests and fighting infection. Doctors believed he would need oxygen for the next two years but Hunter proved them wrong and is now breathing on his own. Ms Zammit said the family was not out of the woods yet but Hunter was doing well. “I always thought that being a mother was what I was born to be,” she said. “I risked my life to have my son. “He’s a little machine and I’m so thankful for all the support that we have received.”
The Fair Work Ombudsman has fined a former Bacchus Marsh massage parlour operator and its accounting firm almost $20,000 over wage theft and false record keeping. The Federal Circuit Court has ordered penalties of $8500 be paid by Austop Natural Therapy and Supplies, which formerly operated massage parlours trading as ‘Yin’s Chinese Traditional Massage’ in Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat, after it admitted to underpaying a Chinese worker $13,522 and providing false records to inspectors. The couple running the company, Yusen Yin and Wenhua Liu, were each fined $2800 for their involvement. Accounting firm Keith Golding & Associates was ordered to pay a $5000 penalty as an accessory in the company’s false-records breaches. Judge Alistair McNab said the underpayments were significant, and the conduct of the accounting firm required deterrence. Fair Work Inspectors investigated after contact from the worker, who was in Australia on a work and holiday visa. Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker said migrant workers can be particularly vulnerable due to language or cultural barriers. “All employees in Australia have the same rights at work, regardless of citizenship or visa status, and we encourage anyone with concerns about their pay to contact us,” she said. “Third parties such as accountants should be aware that they can be ordered by a court to pay penalties if found to be involved in contraventions.” Benjamin Millar

Melton, Moorabool virus free By Benjamin Millar The “ring of steel” dividing Melton and Moorabool has been removed and both areas have been declared coronavirus free as Victoria’s number of overall actives cases dropped to just four on Sunday. The state recorded its ninth straight day with zero new cases and zero deaths, bringing the rolling 14-day average down to just 0.4 and leaving the western suburbs without any confirmed cases. Victoria’s total number of coronavirus cases
stands at 20,345 and 819 people have died. Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday said the continued tumbling in case numbers was thanks to the efforts of Victorians to comply with restrictions during months of lockdown. He announced a range of new measures including the removal of the boundary between Melbourne and regional Victoria and ditching of the 25-kilometre travel limit. “Nothing about this year has been easy, but the hardest thing of all has been missing the people we love most,” he said. “Today, because of that sacrifice, our state
can be whole again. Families will be whole again too.” People may continue to have two visitors as well as dependent children to their home per day, but they no longer need to be from the same household. Accommodation can reopen, restaurants, pubs and cafes can host 40 customers indoors and 70 outdoors, gyms and indoor sporting facilities can open with up to 20 people and indoor sport for those 18 and under can recommence. Community spaces such as libraries or RSLs
and neighbourhood houses can have up to 20 people indoors, as can indoor entertainment venues per space. Rules around visiting aged care and hospitals have been relaxed to allow a household able to visit together for up to two hours. The State of Disaster will not be renewed, but the State of Emergency will be extended until December 6 to allow the Chief Health Officer’s directions to remain in force. Mr Andrews said Victoria is on track to reach the ‘last step’ in the roadmap towards reopening from November 22.
Park safety boost Exercise stations, picnic tables and a disc golf course will be installed and playgrounds upgraded along a stretch of green open space in Kurunjang after the state government chipped in funding to improve safety in Little Blind Creek Reserve. Crime Prevention Minister and Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins last week announced the $200,000 grant as part of a $5.5 million package for 14 community organisations and 17 councils across the state. Melton council’s 2020 Annual Household Survey found residents in Kurunjang have lower perceptions of safety compared with the Melton and metropolitan Melbourne averages and that perceptions have worsened over the past year. Melton council community planning manager Nicole Misurelli said the Kurunjang Community Group has been meeting regularly to discuss ideas for improving perceptions
of safety in the area and was instrumental in successfully attracting the grant. “We look forward to seeing the community make full use of the space once it’s developed. It will provide residents with a dedicated area to enjoy nature and somewhere where families can run, play, picnic and exercise.” Ms Misurelli said construction is expected to begin late next year. “Little Blind Creek Reserve is much-loved by locals and we would like to thank and congratulate the Kurunjang Community Group who had a vision for this site and developed the project idea.” Ms Hutchins said the state government is helping Victorians recover from the economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic by providing support for local projects that improve safety and boost employment. Charge over fatal collision A Mount Martha man, 59, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death over a fatal multi-vehicle collision in Laverton earlier this year. Police believe a Ford Ranger utility towing a trailer was travelling outbound on the Princes Freeway when it collided with three other cars near Kororoit Creek Road about 5.50am on April 21. The collision caused a white Kia sedan to veer across the freeway where it was struck by two trucks. The 57-year-old Caroline Springs man who was driving the Kia sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision.

Teen arrested A 15-year-old Melton South boy and five other males have been arrested after three teenagers were allegedly assaulted at a Werribee park last month. A 17-year-old boy was struck with a machete, causing serious injuries to his lower body. Detectives last week executed nine warrants across Melbourne’s west and arrested six males. Two 15-year-old boys from Melton South and Point Cook, and a 14-year-old from Albanvale have been charged with violent disorder, possessing a controlled weapon and committing an indictable offence on bail. All three have been remanded to appear before a children’s court.

Final phase to line duplication By Benjamin Millar Ballarat rail line commuters are being warned to plan ahead over summer as authorities undertake a major works blitz. Work on the $600 million Ballarat Line Upgrade’s final phase of works and safety testing will ramp up in late December and January, duplicating lines and bringing new platforms at Bacchus Marsh and Ballan online. Coaches will replace trains on the line during a five-week work blitz from December
28 to January 30 as work crews install 500 metres of track duplication between Bacchus Marsh station and Maddingley and at two level crossings in Ballan. Following safety testing, trains and passengers will start using the new second platforms at Ballan, Bacchus Marsh and Wendouree stations. Victorian Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the completion of works will enable a further boost to train services along the line, on top of more than 150 new services introduced over the past five years.
“We’re thrilled passengers will soon see the full benefits of the Ballarat Line Upgrade, but first we must complete this crucial final step on the project, as we integrate new track, a new signalling system and other infrastructure onto the existing rail line,” Ms Allan said. “It’s one of the most critical tasks undertaken on the project to date.” Buninyong MP Michaela Settle said the construction builds on earlier works including a new station at Cobblebank, a rebuilt Rockbank station, and upgraded stations at Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Wendouree.
“Passengers are already enjoying a new station, improved station facilities and two extra peak weekday services between Melton and Southern Cross Station, and we’re excited about the rest of the project benefits,” Ms Settle said. Wendouree MP Juliana Addison said new train passing loops at Ballan and Millbrook will help services recover faster from unexpected delays and improve reliability on the line. Senator for Victoria Sarah Henderson said the line upgrade has provided more than 400 jobs over the course of the project.
‘True gentleman’ missed “Although many new firefighters in the brigade didn’t get the chance to meet and get to know Pat, many stories and examples of his service are still told by senior brigade members.” Pat also excelled on the sporting field in his younger years, racking up four premierships with the Darley Football Club – a memory he cherished throughout his lifetime. The club paid tribute to its “longest living Darley premiership legend”. “Our condolences to all of his family, friends and Darley community friends. Tributes are flowing for Bacchus Marsh stalwart Allan “Pat” Adair, who passed away recently aged 101. Pat Adair has been remembered as a gentleman and proud family man who become a cherished grandfather to eight grandchildren and great-grandfather to nine great-grandchildren. Born on October 17, 1919, he moved from Ararat to Bacchus Marsh in 1936 to take up work as an apprentice in the gas industry. He soon began his long involvement with the Bacchus Marsh Urban Fire Brigade, while living in Merrimu House. Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade paid tribute to Pat, mourning the passing of its oldest brigade member. “Pat Adair, a true gentleman and brave firefighter, held positions of leadership at Bacchus Marsh Urban Fire Brigade alongside many other local heroes,” the tribute stated.

Region ready to welcome visitors By Benjamin Millar Moorabool businesses are preparing for an influx of visitors now that the “ring of steel” that has been dividing metropolitan Melbourne residents from regional Victoria has finally been removed. Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that the boundary between Melbourne and regional Victoria was coming down that night and the 25-kilometre travel limit would no longer be in place. “The rules that currently apply to regional
Victoria will apply to the whole state – wherever you live,” he said. The news has been welcomed in towns across Moorabool, hit hard by the strict lockdown that has kept people living in Melbourne from visiting the regions since July. The lockdown has inflicted a particularly hefty hit on the hospitality industry, hurting cafes, restaurants and accommodation providers who depend upon tourism to make ends meet. Ballan chamber of commerce president Michael Ryan said local businesses are ready
to welcome visitors again and that people should have no trouble visiting safely as long as sensible social distancing measures are observed. “As long as people are wearing their masks and acting appropriately it should all be OK,” he said. “It has to happen at some stage, the figures at the moment are suggesting that it’s manageable and won’t put too much pressure on local health services.” Mr Ryan said it is time to get the economy ticking over again and called on people to get out and support struggling small businesses
in particular. “I think there’s no doubt that some businesses have suffered terribly during the lockdown and others have blossomed,” he said. “I think it’s important for the regions and I hope people go to the smaller towns and support them. “I think people have got to respect things like being asked to wear masks, they mightn’t want to wear a mask but if it’s good enough for everyone else then it is something they can do.”
Dishing up compassion Fostering a community connection in Brimbank can be as simple as sharing a meal. That’s why Taylors Hill resident Deepti Alurkar and her husband began delivering homemade meals earlier this year for those struggling with food insecurity as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The self-funded project has picked up traction in the past five months and Ms Alurkar and a team of volunteers distributed more than 750 meals in the past week. Ms Alurkar, who heads up the Multicultural Association of Community Empowerment, said she started the food delivery initiative to help her neighbours and meet more people. “As a migrant I realise the importance of family and friends because we arrived here and we didn’t know anyone. I started a social club with eight mums in a backyard … and now we have about 500 mums. “We started a not for profit organisation
and through that we do a lot of initiatives, activities, donation drives and fundraising for the community. “Everyone was being impacted by COVID and people were losing jobs left, right and centre. Many people are facing this for the first time, they have a lot to deal with.” Ms Alurkar said the service delivers “free meals with dignity, no questions asked”. Dinners include homemade curries, pasta dishes, soups, fried rice. At the height of the pandemic, volunteers were also delivering groceries to international students and donating food parcels to council organisations. “It’s a way to connect with our neighbours,” Ms Alurkar said. “I hope to motivate others to do the same. If everyone helps one person it makes the community a better place to live.” Esther Lauaki

Survey examines future of news Newspaper readers in Melton and Moorabool are being urged to have their say on the future of country media in Australia’s biggest survey on local news. The survey, launched nationally this week, is part of the largest study of its kind in Australia, running for three years with almost $250,000 backing from the Australian Research Council, one of the federal government’s main competitive research funding agencies. Deakin University, RMIT University and Country Press Australia, the peak regional media organisation, of which this newspaper is
a member, are leading the study. The project’s lead investigator, Deakin Associate Professor Kristy Hess, said the future of local newspapers depended on support from local audiences. The survey aims to give people a voice on ways to improve the sustainability of their local paper. “If you read your local newspaper, then it’s absolutely vital you fill in this survey to show your support for local news. We are depending on you,” she said. “We want to hear your ideas and feedback on the role of country newspapers in these digital times. We want to know what
the paper means to you and how it might improve into the future.” Project partner and Country Press Australia executive director, Bruce Morgan, said the project was as much about regional communities as it was about local media businesses. “Local media outside metropolitan Australia is very much the journal of record for the towns and regions it represents,” he said. “It is not exaggerating to say that, should we lose local media representation, it will impact not just on the fabric of those communities, but
the very principles of democracy. That is, the ability to record, champion, challenge and hold accountable. That is why this highly-credible, well-funded research is vital to those communities and their future.” The survey should take up to 10 minutes and will ask a range of questions that relate to your views on local newspapers. 101 joyous years Jean Algie was the toast of the town last week when she celebrated her 101st birthday. The Sydenham resident celebrated with friends and family at Arcare aged care last Thursday and said she was thrilled by all the love and support. Ms Algie migrated from Scotland to Australia in 1959 with her husband and three children. “We had nothing,” she said. “It was challenging, but that’s life, you just keep getting on with it. I’ve always worked and I’ve always seen the fun in things. I love talking and having a laugh.” Ms Algie worked as a house cleaner in Toorak into her 80s and many of her former employers still keep in contact today. These days, her main source of happiness lies in receiving phone calls and visits from her children and grandchildren. Although not as steady on her feet as she
once was, Ms Algie finds joy in the lighter side of life. “You have to laugh, you have to have fun and you have to take things as they come.” These days she’s a proud grandmother of five and a great-grandmother of five. Esther Lauaki

Record number of women elected By Benjamin Millar A record three women will be lining up as Moorabool councillors for the next four years following the official confirmation of the area’s seven successful candidates. The seven councillors were sworn in at the Darley council offices last Thursday after the Victorian Electoral Commission declared the provisional results of the tussle. Rod Ward finished with the highest vote
tally in the East Moorabool ward covering Bacchus Marsh, followed by Moira Berry, David Edwards and Tonia Dudzik. Paul Tatchell was returned in Central Moorabool ward, receiving 42.6 per cent of first preferences and 53.4 per cent after distribution, pipping out Ben Davison who took 29.98 per cent of first votes and 46.7 per cent after preferences. Thomas Sullivan was returned in West Moorabool ward, beating out challenger
Thomas Lindsay Watters 74.5 per cent to 25.5 per cent. Ally Munari won in Woodlands ward with 35.8 per cent of the first vote and 51.5 per cent after distribution. The election of councillors Munari, Berry and Dudzik marks the first time Moorabool has featured three women on the council at the same time. Cr Munari said it was a privilege to be chosen to serve the community for the next
four years. “I will do my very best in representing my community and participating in the decision-making process of council and our region,” she said. “I truly feel that we have a wonderful team elected, I am so excited to work with the wonderful staff of the Moorabool Shire and to learn from their experience.” A meeting to elect the mayor is due to be held on December 2.

Fresh faces for Melton council By Benjamin Millar Three new councillors have been elected to Melton council following a hotly contested election in which more than 40 hopefuls were vying for one of nine roles. The Victorian Electoral Commission has officially announced the nine councillors who will represent the City of Melton for the next four years, including new faces Moira Deeming in Watts ward and Ashleigh Vandenberg and Julie Shannon in Coburn ward. The six returning councillors from the previous term are Lara Carli in Watts ward, Bob Turner and Sophie Ramsey in Coburn ward and Kathy Majdlik, Steve Abboushi and Goran Kesic in Cambridge ward. Melton council chief executive Kelvin Tori welcomed each of the elected councillors and thanked all the candidates. “There were 41 candidates vying for a place in this council, and to be among the nine people that our residents have chosen to represent them is a great achievement,” he said. “I’m sure our councillors are eager to get started on new initiatives and continue council’s important projects for our community. I look forward to seeing this council work together to ensure the City of Melton is a place that families, individuals and businesses can thrive.” In Cambridge ward Cr Majdlik secured 28 per cent of the first preference votes, Cr Abboushi 23.8 per cent and Cr Kesic 12.9 per cent. In Coburn ward Cr Turner collected 21.6 per cent of first preferences, Cr Vandenberg 20.7 per cent, Cr Ramsay 14.5 per cent and Cr Shannon 11 per cent. In Watts ward, Cr Carli took 25.8 per cent of first preferences and Cr Deeming 21.5 per cent. The mayor and deputy mayor will be elected at the November 16 council meeting.

SPORT Giants rebound from promotion disappointment

Werribee Giants are determined to come back bigger and stronger in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. After strong performances last season, the Giants had hoped they had done enough to earn promotion into division 1. While they claimed the minor premiership, which put them in contention for promotion, the club was left disappointed when Baseball Victoria decided not to promote them because they didn’t have the numbers for the junior team. Giants president Dave Bishop-Worn said it was disappointing for the team and the club would look to ensure it met all the points for qualification for promotion next time round. The Giants were knocked out in the preliminary final. “We will come back bigger and stronger,” he said.
“We’re looking to be at the pointy end of the table again. The guys in the ones are keen, so hopefully we can go that one step further.” Bishop-Worn said that they would have a similar team to the past season. Like most other teams, they’ve had trouble securing an import due to travel restrictions. “It’s basically the same team as last year, with a couple of returning players, who haven’t played for a few years. “The numbers are good and they will start to filter down to the other sides.” There has been a coaching change, with Ryan Balzer taking over from John Curnow. Curnow is continuing on as a player. Bishop-Worn said the club was rapt that Balzer, who has been president at the club in 2018 and 2019, had been appointed coach. The division 1 season is expected to start in early December.
Darley bounces back By Tara Murray Darley bounced back with a win following its first loss since early 2019 in the Ballarat Cricket Association. After an uncharacteristic performance against East Ballarat last weekend, the Lions were on fire at home against Ballarat-Redan in Saturday’s one-dayer. The Lions bowled Ballarat-Redan out for 150 with six balls remaining of the 50 overs. Dayle Locke and Hasitha Wickramasinghe took two wickets each for the Lions. The Lions, led by Danza Hyatt, made light work of the chase, reaching the mark with just over 22 overs remaining. The Lions made 2-151 with Hyatt finishing unbeaten on 80, in an innings which included seven fours and three sixes. Speaking before the game, Lions coach Brian Wheelahan said they had spoken about their poor performance during the week. He said they knew they could play better. “We were outplayed a little,” he said. “We had a quick chat about it. We were really embarrassed about it, as it’s not us. “The [winning] run had to come to an end but not like that as we departed from all aspects of our game.” Wheelahan said they had been confident of bouncing back and that’s exactly what they did. The win has the Lions in fourth spot after three rounds. Wheelahan said overall they were happy with how things had gone so far. “Golden Point was the side we were meant to play in the grand final and we beat them in round one,” he said. “It’s a really even competition and if you’re not on your game, anyone can get you. “Hopefully last week was a reality check.” Wheelahan was among the interested onlookers on Sunday, to see what restrictions Premier Daniel Andrews would ease. With the regional and metro ‘ring of steel’ in place, Wheelahan, who lives in metro Melbourne, hasn’t been able to attend any training or games the first three rounds. With the border coming down, Wheelahan will be back at training this week and at the game on Saturday. In a boost for the Lions, Rahmatullah Khwaja, who like Wheelahan lives in Melbourne, is now available for selection. “It has been frustrating just talking on FaceTime,” Wheelahan said. “Ryan is excited and looking forward to bringing in a lot of youth and enthusiasm to the ones,” he said. “He’s been part of Werribee for a long time. He’ll coach the firsts and the whole club. “He’s an accredited coach and they’re really hard to come by, especially in baseball.” As well as having good numbers in the seniors, the club has had good numbers with their junior sides. Bishop-Worn said everyone was keen to get back to train and socialise with their friends and teammates. The club is looking for players for its under-12 teams at its satellite clubs Tarneit Rangers and the Point Cook Pirates. Both play in a western suburbs competition on Friday nights. Tara Murray
New coach for Lakers women New Caroline Springs women’s coach Dean Ellis decided the time was right to step up and coach his daughter. Ellis was recently named the club’s women’s coach for next year’s Western Region Football League season, He has previously coached his son and been president of the Lakers. Ellis, who has watched the women’s side the past few years, said it was a good opportunity to coach. He replaces Colin Clohesy. “I’ve coached my son in the past and my daughter plays football at Caroline Springs,” he said. “I thought I would stand up and do something for her. “She is pretty excited by it.” Ellis admits that he’s an old fashioned coach that does give a bit of spray, but knows that women’s football is different to men’s. He was president of the club when it first introduced female sides. “The way women’s footy is, it’s come a long way,” he said. “There’s so much passion the girls have for it and I’m going to try and tap into that passion. “We’ve got sides in the under-18s and under-16s and I want to have a pathway for them. “I want them to have somewhere to play, if they can’t or don’t want to play at a higher level.” The Lakers have made finals every year since first fielding a women’s side in 2017. They were runners-up in 2018 to Manor Lakes, before falling short in the 2019 decider to Spotswood. The 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Ellis said he expected them to still have that core group of players, despite no football this season. “We had a core group of about 25 players and hopefully most of them will return. “There’s a few 18s girls who are coming up and this will be their first season playing in under-18s. “It’s a big step up for those players, but we have the other players there to help them with that transition.” The club is still waiting for AFL Victoria to announce when clubs can return to training. Heath Scotland takes the reins at Sunshine New Sunshine coach Heath Scotland was keen to get back into local football after losing his job in the AFL system. A development coach at North Melbourne this year, Scotland was one of several in the industry to lose his job due to COVID-19. Realistic about his chances of getting another job in the AFL for next season, Scotland decided to return to local football, signing with the Western Region Football League division 1 club. “I’m looking forward to it,” Scotland said. “Looking at it, 30 per cent of AFL coaches lost their jobs, so it was going to be difficult to step back into another role. “I wanted to get back into footy and get back into coaching and I love coaching local footy. I was approached by Sunshine and I sat on it for a week or two and now the rest is history.”

Scotland previously coached his junior club Darley, taking them to the 2017 Ballarat Football League premiership, before moving to North Melbourne.
Scotland said talking with people at Sunshine, he could see some correlation between the Kangaroos and Darley. Like the Devils, the Kangaroos have a young up-and-coming list. “It ticks a lot of boxes,” he said. “Sunshine is a really strong club and is filled by good people. They were speaking about correlations between Sunshine and Darley. “The club has struggled the last year or two, but made the grand final a couple of years before that. “There’s the challenge of building the side from down the bottom and bringing them back up. It’s an opportunity to test myself.” Scotland, who played 268 AFL games for Carlton and Collingwood, said he was aware of the level of competition in the WRFL with some of his family members having previously
played in the competition. Scotland replaces Adam Contessa who stood down from the role in late August. He said the club was now in the process of getting its list in place for next season. “Most players don’t want to commit until a club has signed a coach,” he said. “Now that’s happened, we’re going to look at bringing back Sunshine people to Sunshine. “We’re not going to be bringing in people left, right and centre. “Every club needs to bring in players when they’re down the bottom, so a couple of players will be essential. “We’ll start with looking to bring in locals and then see what we need from there. Eagles hope to soar By Tara Murray After a long winter of lockdown, Yarraville Cricket Club has had an influx of players ahead of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west season. With a season now confirmed, Eagles captain-coach Matthew Grose said they had a record number of players register to play. “I think it would have been really devastating if we hadn’t been able to play the sport that we love, like the footballers through winter,” he said. “Our sport has been a benefactor, with a prolonged period of lockdown, we’ve been overwhelmed with a record number of players. “It’s going to be difficult to organise training.” Grose said the majority of players had returned from the past season, while some former players had returned and would be looking to fill spots in the top two sides. A number of younger players were also keen to push their claims for a senior spot. “We’ve got a lot of young juniors who have been coming through the teams,” he said.
“They want to get some experience at senior level. “We will have five senior teams. Last season the fifth team was mainly juniors. We’re hoping some of those kids will fill spots in the fourth team and push higher.” From the first XI, two players from the past season won’t be returning. Arjun Sehrawat, who was named in the Victorian under-15 team, has moved on to Premier Cricket club Footscray. He took 17 wickets in the first XI as a 14-year-old. Tom Saunders, who came into the side in the back half of the season, has stepped away from cricket for family reasons. Grose said they had been able to fill those roles with a couple of key inclusions. “I think the players coming back from last year, after a season off or injury, will help strengthen the side. “Sam Shearer started last season [played five games] before needing to have shoulder surgery and will be a valuable recruit. “Mohan D’Souza played with us two seasons ago before missing last season. They’re both
super keen to come back.” Grose said the playing group had put high expectations on itself after a strong 2019-20 season where they finished second in their group. They were knocked out in the semi-finals by Werribee. Minor premiers Williamstown was awarded the premiership after the grand final was called off due to COVID-19. Grose said they were hoping to replicate that success not only next season, but in the long term. “We weren’t far off it … we were outplayed on the second day of the semi-final against Werribee. “Internally we think we’re good enough and really well suited to one-day cricket. “If we continue with that white ball form, we will take a lot of beating again. “We’ve got a lot of depth in our squad which is what one-day cricket is about. We’ve got a really even deep squad. “We certainly have high expectations of ourselves.” The Eagles face local rival Altona in the opening round of the season on November 21.
New Sunbury Lions women’s coach Daniel Brady decided to take on the coaching role after a couple of years cheering from the sidelines. With two of his daughters playing football with the Lions in recent years, Brady has been a keen observer and supporter. Phil Lithgow stepped down from the coaching role following the cancelled 2020 season and after moving away from the area. Brady decided to put his hand up to coach the Essendon District Football League side. Brady said he had always been keen to support his children with their different sports. “I became president of the Melton Basketball Association with my daughters playing basketball, but the two older ones are now playing football,” he said. “I was down at training sessions more and more and I started to get the passion to teach them. “They want to learn and know more and more. It was in the back of my mind and it snowballed from there.” Brady has never coached women’s or girls’ football, but has an extensive football and sporting background. He played football for nearly 20 years at the Sunbury Kangaroos, winning three premierships and having the honour of being the club’s first senior captain. Brady later stepped into coaching and held a number of different coaching roles, senior and junior, at clubs across the Riddell District, Central Highlands and Ballarat football leagues. With his daughters playing basketball, he started coaching basketball, which led him to taking on the Melton Basketball Association presidency, which he recently gave up. Brady said he was looking forward to the challenge of coaching football. “They asked me if I was able to recruit players from other teams, but with not coaching girls’ or women’s football I don’t have that ability. “For me, there’s a good mob of under-18s and they’re going to be the recruits and we need to provide that pathway.” Former Sunbury Kangaroos’ women’s coach Brian Millett has been appointed assistant coach. “Phil has done a great job in setting it up … and the girls and myself are keen to keep it going,” he said. “I don’t want to take the foot off the pedal in that regards.” Tara Murray
