Box office flop By Esther Lauaki Hundreds of empty seats have been a familiar scene at Village Cinemas Sunshine as the state grappled with a second wave of coronavirus. Now the industry fears for its future after being snubbed in last Monday’s state government announcements which lifted lockdown restrictions on retail and hospitality. Cinemas have been closed to patrons for months, and are likely to be closed for several more weeks. Village Entertainment chief executive Kirk Edwards said the latest government decisions have excluded the arts and entertainment sector and placed unnecessary pressure on the entire industry and its stood down employees, who are receiving little to no income.

He joined a chorus of calls for the government to provide information on when cinemas can reopen and requests for the same level of consideration given to other industries – such as restaurants, cafes, gyms and churches. “It was very disappointing to see that cinema and entertainment had been left behind by the Victorian government once again,” Mr Edwards said. “While we are delighted to see so many other industries beginning to reopen, we are simply seeking the same level of consideration that has been given to those industries. Cinema is such an important part of our community, and sharing stories is an integral part of how we connect with one another. “We believe we are in a strong position to be able to allow Victorians an opportunity to

reconnect and unwind in a safe environment – an experience that so many Victorians sorely need.” No confirmed COVID-19 cases in Australia have been linked to cinemas which, in other states, have been operational since late June and reopened in line with the hospitality and retail industry. Mr Edwards said that within the environment of a cinema, the risk of transmission is lessened by the large well-ventilated movie theatre auditoriums, where guests are facing one direction, wearing masks and not speaking. Cinema businesses, including Village Entertainment, have prepared stringent COVID-safe plans in order to keep staff and customers safe. Mr Edwards said that based on the research,

cinemas should be allowed to open alongside restaurants, gyms and churches from November 8. Village Entertainment operations chief Gino Munari said he was looking forward to seeing all cinemas re-open in the coming weeks. “The past few months have been very difficult for our staff, and the latest announcements have left many of us feeling very let down,” Mr Murani said. “The lack of clarity and consistent exclusion from reopening decisions has placed unnecessary stress on the thousands of young Australian part-time and casual workers that cinema employs. While we are incredibly grateful to be able to welcome back our Coburg Drive In team, we are dedicated to protecting the livelihood of all of all our staff.”

Focus on pandemic recovery By Esther Lauaki Brimbank council has granted 378 COVID-19 Hardship Policy applications, as part of a suite of steps to support the community in its response and recovery from the impact of the pandemic. Chief executive Helen Morrissey said council had by the end of September completed 93 per cent of the actions identified in its Coronavirus Response and Recovery Strategy. Throughout September, council’s support

services delivered 11,315 meals to vulnerable community members, maternal and child health phone consultations, immunisation services to 94 infants, Library to Your Door services to 552 residents, and Click and Collect service to 497 residents. “The Coronavirus Response and Recovery Strategy aims to help combat the spread of COVID-19, while mitigating the negative impacts of the pandemic on the health and wellbeing of our community,” Ms Morrissey said. She said council would continue its support

after Brimbank’s retail and hospitality industry reopened last Wednesday. “Council has a strong focus on supporting vulnerable populations as well as the local economy, including business, industry, and jobs,” Ms Morrissey said “We will continue to support vulnerable members of our community, along with local businesses as they take steps to safely reopen as restrictions ease across Melbourne. “This includes releasing new COVID-19 Temporary Outdoor Permit and Guidelines

on Monday, October 5 to help hospitality businesses prepare to operate outdoor dining as we move towards the next step in the Victorian government’s roadmap.” Council’s essential services operated throughout the pandemic with additional safety requirements including extra PPE, staggering shifts, staggering breaks, health declarations and more support for sick workers to ensure they stay home. Sunshine Leisure Centre outdoor pool reopened on September 28, along with public parks and open spaces.

Murder charges welcomed The brother of slain Melbourne teenager Solomone Taufeulungaki has welcomed the news that 11 people have been charged his brother’s murder but says nothing will bring him back. Two 13-year-old boys were among the people charged last month, more than four months after Solomone was fatally stabbed outside Brimbank Shopping Centre. The 15-year-old was allegedly set upon in the shopping centre carpark, across the road from the Mormon church he attended, about 4pm on June 16. Emergency services were called but he died at the scene. The 11 males charged over his death were previously charged with offences including violent disorder and affray in relation to the incident. Those charges have now been upgraded to murder. “All I can say is that justice has been served,” Solomone’s elder brother, Taani Taufeulungaki, said in relation to the new charges. “Nothing will ever bring my little brother Solomone back. This is all for Solo.” Solomone’s parents said they forgave those who killed their son. “They didn’t know what they doing … [they’re] still young,” said father ’Atunaisa Taufeulungaki. Police previously said they believed the Deer Park brawl had broken out between members of rival groups. Those charged included six teenagers from St Albans aged 13, 14, 15, two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old, a 15-year-old from Burnside Heights, a 13-year-old from Hoppers Crossing and a 16-year-old from Kings Park. A 23-year-old man from Hoppers Crossing and 20-year-old Sunshine man were also charged with murder. The teens will appear at a children’s court on December 1. The two adults will face a magistrates court on November 25.

Brain ‘building’ book A new book is empowering parents to talk to their children about understanding their brains, encouraging brain care and how this impacts on their emotions and behaviour. Love Your Brain is the first children’s picture book from Sunshine child behaviour expert Chrissie Davies. Davies has experience in advocating for and understanding children with challenging behaviours. “When we truly understand that children don’t see the world in the same way as adults, and we teach them how to keep their brains happy and healthy, we understand that this is really the most important parenting tool we will ever need,” Davies said. By writing the book, Davies hopes that parents and children understand their behaviour more positively, and discover how to become brain builders, together. Love Your Brain is an informative and light-hearted text narrated by Little Brainiac – a likeable children’s character – about the importance of looking after and understanding our unique brains. The book emphasises the naming of emotions, and most importantly, how to manage them. Youngsters are also given tips on how to care for their brain by getting lots of sleep, eating lots of healthy food, drinking water, listening to music and giving their brain a break by using meditation and mindfulness. Sunshine CCTV plan wins state government support Brimbank council will receive a $500,000 state grant to install new CCTV cameras across the Sunshine Town Centre. Brimbank chief executive Helen Morrissey welcomed the contribution as another initiative to support community safety and help create a safe neighbourhood for residents and local businesses. “The CCTV installation project is part of council’s commitment to continue improving and developing the Sunshine Town Centre as a vibrant, attractive and welcoming place for local residents as well as visitors to the town

centre,” Ms Morrissey said. “Community safety is of paramount importance to us, and we are taking proactive steps to ensure a safe, healthy and connected community in Melbourne’s growing west, particularly as we work to respond and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re pleased that the state government has committed to supporting our work to create a community where everyone can feel safe and welcome. “Creating a safer environment through CCTV installations will help promote a space

where our community feels safe enjoying the many nearby businesses and restaurants that Sunshine has to offer. “We know Sunshine Town Centre is a popular shopping destination for locals and for visitors, and along with the much anticipated Hampshire Road Civic Green space in the heart of Sunshine, it will make the area even more attractive. “This is another positive step in the ongoing revitalisation of Sunshine, and with strengthened safety measures in the town centre, we hope to create the kind of community

that we all want, and deserve to belong to.” The CCTV camera system will work as part of a broader council strategy to reduce crime, improve public amenity and increase perceptions of safety and social cohesion within the Sunshine Town Centre. In2Sport summer program In2Sport is a sports membership subsidy program helping young children living in Brimbank take part in community sport, regardless of financial circumstances. Through In2Sport children aged between six and 18 years are eligible to apply for 75 per cent of the club membership fees, or up to $200 financial assistance, to contribute to club membership fees at participating Brimbank sports clubs. This year we are supporting families financially impacted by COVID-19, females,

first time applicants and people living with disability and giving them priority access to apply to the program. The priority application period is now open for a two-week period. By Esther Lauaki Brimbank residents are encouraged to shop locally and, more importantly, eat locally. As restaurants and cafes reopen under eased COVID-19 restrictions, Brimbank council is asking the community to get out and about and show their support. Sunshine Social restaurant owner Gareth Crawford was thrilled to welcome diners back last week. “We have been trading at Sunshine Social for three years, we were attracted to the venue because of the space and living in the area we thought there was a gap in the market for a family-friendly venue with a good selection of food and drinks,” Mr Crawford said. “We have always said ‘our front yard is your other backyard’. Now it seems like this may have even more importance, in that if socialising at home is not encouraged, people will think of us to meet another family for a catch-up, knowing the kids can play and it’s a relaxed informal environment. “We were genuinely unsure if we would be able to come out of the other side when the restrictions were first imposed, but we have been able to pay the bills and will hopefully come out a better business having had a chance to reflect on how we operate. “We are lucky that we have so much space, so distancing is not a problem. The main change we are implementing is a COVID safe contactless ordering system. Guests will be able to order from their phones at the table, eliminating even the need to come inside.” Brimbank council chief executive Helen Morrissey said more than 90 per cent of Brimbank businesses had lost revenue and customers during the pandemic, and called on the community to rally in support of local

businesses. “So many local businesses have been doing it tough and we’re asking our community to show your Brimbank pride by shopping and dining with local businesses,” Ms Morrissey said. “After months of lockdown, many in our community will be excited to get out and safely enjoy everything our wonderful local cafes and restaurants have to offer – whether that’s a banh mi, burger, curry, or a coffee and cake.”

Chemical spill Firefighters were called to Ballarat Road, Deer Park after reports of a chemical spill at a factory just before noon on October 22. A community advice message was issued for residents in Cairnlea, Deer Park, and Ardeer advising them to close windows and doors, and turn off their air conditioning units. Firefighters contained the chemical leak about 12.25pm. All occupants were safely evacuated and there were no reports of injury. Fire Rescue Victoria worked with Victoria Police and WorkSafe to ensure the safety of employees and the nearby community.

A 47-year-old Mount Macedon man has been charged in relation to the 1996 sexual assault of a woman in St Albans. Sexual Crimes Squad detectives said the arrest follows an incident at an Evergreen Avenue property about 5.10am on July 23, 1996. A 39-year-old woman, who is now deceased, was alone in the property at the time. It’s alleged a man broke into the house and sexually assaulted her. The man was last week charged with two counts of rape and aggravated burglary and remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Keeping families safely together By Esther Lauaki A vital new program aims to keep children and young people in Brimbank and Melton from entering out-of-home care. Community organisation OzChild has rolled out its Family Worx programs across the west with one key goal in mind – to keep families safely together. Launched in September, the Family Worx programs are highly responsive and flexible to each family’s needs and are supported by Ozchild’s specialist family services including

Functional Family Therapy , Child Welfare and SafeCare. Prevention and strengthening families director Grenville Hendricks said the Family Worx programs were OzChild’s response to the ever-increasing trajectory of children who may end up in out-of-home care. “If the numbers keep increasing in Australia it will get to a point where it’s no longer sustainable or tenable,” Mr Hendricks said. “We want to work with families in crisis now to keep them together, so children can stay safely with their families.

“Because we know the impacts of a child being removed from their family and placed into out-of-home care can be significant and long-lasting.” Chief executive Lisa Griffiths said Australia could not continue to rely on the recruitment of foster or kinship carers to care for at-risk kids. “Families have been forced to spend long, uninterrupted time together, normal support systems have not been in place and greater financial and emotional stress can place vulnerable children, young people and families at greater risk,” Dr Griffiths said.

“I am certain, the demand on the out-of-home care system will be greater than ever before, for a long time after the coronavirus crisis. “We must address the underlying issues, the reasons why children are being placed in out-of-home care, Family Worx aims to do just that.” The program provides an integrated service to families in crisis, requiring immediate support and intervention as well as parents who are being reunified with their children after a period in out-of-home care.

School marks 10 years Growth, a culture of excellence and strong leadership have been 10 years in the making at Taylors Hill Primary School. The school last Wednesday marked a decade since it officially opened and principal Danielle Stella remembers the first day clearly. “The first students started at the school in February 2010, but Taylors Hill PS was officially opened on October 28, 2010,” Ms Stella said. “What I remember on that first day was the excitement and gratitude that the families expressed, because they finally had a local school for their children to attend. They were all excitedly entered through the gates, where they met their new teacher and classmates.” Enrolments have grown from 172 pupils on its first day to 766 pupils this year. “In our first year we started with seven classes and that has grown to 32,” Ms Stella said. “In 2010, five grade 6 students graduated from the school and this year there will be 114

graduating.” Ms Stella, who has been at the helm of the school since its first year, said she continues to serve in the role because of the amazing staff that she works alongside every day. “Three of them have been with me for the whole 10-year journey, including my assistant principal Trudy Smith,” she said. “We developed a culture of strong leadership for our staff and students, which has blossomed into an outstanding learning community where students are supported to reach their full potential. “Bringing the school’s vision to life over the past 10 years has been extremely rewarding and I am so proud of what we have achieved for the Taylors Hill Primary School community.” She said the resilience shown by pupils and their families this year had been vital to their success. MY BRIMBANK Frank Gabriel has a vision to make Brimbank a leafy green “City of Pines” in the next 10 years. The Deer Park resident talks to Esther Lauaki about his plans and passions. What is your connection to Brimbank?

What’s the quirkiest thing about you?

I am a humble loving husband, family man, migrant from Philippines, active resident of Deer Park after St Albans with my wife and three children. We all love to call Brimbank home.

I was a national baseball champion in the Philippines in 1981, provincial quiz bee history and culture champion in 1981, was accepted in the Philippine Military Academy in 1987, became a registered nurse in 1992 and am now an entrepreneurial-environmentalist.

How long have you lived in the area? What do you love about Brimbank? I have lived in Brimbank for 18 years. I love Brimbank because we care about the environment and we will leave the best legacy for the next generation to enjoy.

I was a servant by choice to our elderly and intellectually challenged segment of our community as RN1 nurse for 15 years. I’m passionate about people, sports and mental health. What hats do you wear in the Brimbank community? I organised the Kororoit Creek Bring a Yellow Bin Plastic Recovery Movement. I founded and co-organised several Brimbank sports groups including baseball, basketball, chess and billiards. Today, one of my priorities is ensuring the planting of a million pine trees by 2030, to catapult the local economy by making Brimbank the pines city of Australia.

What would you like to see improved? We need to be doing something different from the rest. Our progress depends on our educated visions and innovations. I would also like to see emergency workshops to speed-up generating micro-businesses with 50 per cent women representation and workout programs for senior citizens for discounted rates. I want to see two multicultural sports gymnasiums in the most densely populated areas that cater for basketball, Vietnamese board games and billiards. I would love more mental health nurses and a post-COVID multicultural community caucus to focus on economic recovery.

Sunshine Berkeley factory sold By Esther Lauaki Heavyweight property investors Heine Brothers have splashed out about $22 million on the former Berkeley Apparel factory in Sunshine. Records show the investment house has slapped a caveat on 501-503 Ballarat Road, a 1950s era office-warehouse complex currently used as a self-storage facility.

Buildings cover 12,513 square metres of the 22,000 square metre site which is in the Sunshine Activity Zone. Within the Sunshine Activity Zone, the land allows for a variety of development outcomes including high density residential. Dawkins Occhiuto agents Andrew Dawkins, Walter Occhiuto and Chris Jones handled the transaction, struck at about $1000 a square metre.

The purchase is understood to be a strategic land banking move from Heine and is forecast to provide a total annual rent of $1.445 million. The gateway site was first listed in late February just as COVID-19 spread around the globe. Last November former premier Steve Bracks said the suburb should be the capital of Melbourneâ€™s west, and considered as important to the city, as Parramatta is to Sydney.

The government has also earmarked Sunshine for strong population growth â€“ 69 per cent by 2041 â€“ partly as a result of the Airport Rail Link, which will pass the suburb on its route, and create employment opportunities. The $50 billion proposed suburban rail loop will also stop at Sunshine. - with The Age

Volunteer honoured A Yarraville resident and Sunshine Hospital health worker has been recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with children with disabilities. Timothy Chiu was honoured in the Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards for his volunteering with junior sport and recreation camps held twice a year. â€œIt might be campfire cooking activities or we might go down to the beach and take them surfing,â€? he said. â€œThen, in the winter, thereâ€™s a ski camp which is held at Falls Creek and we take the kids â€“ not all of whom but many of whom are in wheelchairs â€“ and we take them skiing or snowboarding.â€? Mr Chiu started volunteering with the camps 27 years ago. â€œIâ€™m a physiotherapist by training and I was at university then and I saw a notice on the physiotherapy notice board seeking volunteers,â€? he said. â€œIâ€™ve always lovee school camps and I thought combining that with what I was learning at the

time â€Ś might be a good match. â€œEssentially, itâ€™s still the same in terms of getting children involved and trying to build their independence and confidence and social interactions with other children with disabilities. â€œItâ€™s incredible. The children are usually between the ages of eight and 17, so they have different needs at different ages. â€œThe main thing that I see them get out of it is not only just having a great time and having fun, but the ability to challenge themselves and do something different in a very safe environment.â€? Brimbank residents were out of lockdown and straight into the shops and cafes last week. Sunshine’s town centre was abuzz with shoppers and diners for the first time in months as retail and hospitality reopened, much to the delight of businesses. Council chief executive Helen Morrissey said the end of lockdown was welcomed by all. “It’s been a long and difficult journey for Brimbank, as well as other areas, and we are very glad to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Ms Morrissey said. There are now no restrictions on reasons to leave home. Cafes, restaurants and pubs can open, and remaining retail can also reopen. Beauty and personal care services can also resume, and outdoor contact sport is allowed for people 18 and under and outdoor non-contact sport is allowed for adults and people 18 and under, with certain limitations. “This easing of restrictions is welcome because it will benefit our community and local businesses who have been severely impacted by the lockdown,” Ms Morrissey said. Getting out and about again Hospitality, retail and services have opened up (or are not far off it) and excited staff are welcoming customers back through their doors. There are no doubt big smiles hiding under masks on both sides, writes Alana Richards.

Grab a bite Local restaurants and cafes have been hugely supported by people ordering take-away meals or grabbing a coffee on their daily walk over the past few months, and they are now welcoming patrons with open arms. It’s time to step it up a notch and take the crew out for a meal. The change of scenery will make for a refreshing and fun outing, there’s no cooking or dishes to do and you’ll be giving local businesses much-needed support. Once the kids have had their outing, pick another night, dust off the heels and dress up for a long-overdue date night, just the grown ups. After limited visits during restrictions, you now have a lot of friends and extended family members to catch up with too, so what better way to do it than over a meal? Remember to book as there are limited capacities for indoor and outdoor seating, often seating session times and there will also be protocols for ‘checking in’. Follow the guidelines set and we’ll keep our community safe and our local business doors open.

Shop it up Pick up your lockdown ‘when I can get to the shops’ list and head in store to grab the items you haven’t been able to find online. Grab the kids some clothes that actually fit after the lockdown growth spurts and restock all the chalk, craft, colouring and rainy day activity items that have been well-used during the past few months. Stores have been closed for so long, old

stock from pre-lockdown is likely to be on sale to clear space for new stock, so it’s a great opportunity to pick up a bargain. As we hit November, the silly season bells ring and we need to start thinking about Christmas shopping. Even the organised people who are done in July need to grab a few extras in the last few weeks, so whether you’re starting on your list or finishing it, it’s nice to

be able to head in-store and have a browse to get the ideas rolling. And if you just want to go shopping because a shopaholic spree is what you need right now, then go for it – after this year, no one’s going to say you don’t deserve it! Don’t forget to take the pile of returns with you so you can get your dining table space back and the refund back in your pocket will also

come in handy. As we approach ‘Covid-normal’, the reopening of our local businesses is a fabulous excuse to spoil yourself, family and friends, so pop your mask on, sanitise your hands and enjoy the extra dinner dates, shopping sprees and beauty treatments – after all, we’ve all earned it and you’re helping local businesses.

Building better oral health for seniors A proposal to introduce a Senior Dental Benefits Scheme must be given serious consideration if Australia is to turn the tide on poor oral health in aged care, according to the Australian Dental Association (ADA). Counsel Assisting the Royal Commission into Aged Care recommended the benefits scheme proposal at the inquiry, with the ADA saying the Commissioners must now give it serious consideration. “Creating such a scheme is critical to building better oral health among people in aged care,” said Dr Carmelo Bonanno, ADA federal president. “Without the funding mechanism to ensure that private dental practitioners can provide screening and treatment, the oral health of our most vulnerable population will continue to be neglected.” The ADA said it was pleased the royal commission had agreed with its proposed alternative to funding oral care for certain seniors, but says the recommendations now need to be followed through with some degree of urgency. In its submissions to the royal commission, the ADA outlined the need for a Senior Dental Benefits Scheme and its benefits relative to other models. Under the ADA proposed scheme, Pensioner Concession Card holders aged over 65 and Commonwealth Seniors Card holders would receive an individual entitlement to subsidised public or private dental treatment up to a cap, for every two-year period. The entitlement could be used by patients to fund dental examinations before or on entry to aged care and regularly from then on, as well as oral health care planning once they access aged care, and any necessary treatment. The ADA says it would mean that older

people would no longer need to languish on public dental waiting lists and would have the choice of continuing to see their regular dentist. In addition, by improving access to affordable and timely dental treatment for those aged 65 and above, the scheme would ensure that they do so with a better foundation of oral health. Such a scheme also has the support of many aged care advocacy groups.

Dentists are familiar and accepting of such schemes, as demonstrated by the uptake of the Child Dental Benefits Scheme and the longstanding provision of services to veterans through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Having a national scheme based on consistent eligibility criteria and treatment rules which can fund dental care for a high proportion of their residents/clients, will be equally important to aged care providers trying

to navigate an already complex funding system, the ADA said. “There are many benefits to a national scheme for residents, aged care providers and governments,” added Dr Bonanno. “The ADA calls on the Commissioners to recognise the importance of this building block by including this recommendation in their final report.” Source: Australian Seniors News

Environment Protection Act 1970 Works Approval Application Proposed Western Victoria Transmission Network Project environment effects statement draft scoping requirements Mondo, the commercial arm of Ausnet Transmission Group Pty Ltd, proposes to develop a new transmission line between Bulgana, north of Ararat, and Sydenham, north-west of Melbourne. The project would also include construction and upgrade of several terminal stations. The Minister for Planning has determined that an environment effects statement (EES) is required for the project. SPORT Hanging Rock goes from strength to strength Hanging Rock Cricket Club is going from strength to strength in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Three seasons ago the Heelers had just one senior and three juniors teams, but has grown to three senior teams and five junior teams this season. Captain-coach Jarrod Milsom said the focus of the club had been developing a family culture environment. “What we’re trying to get out there is more, that family oriented environment and open it up for more people. “A lot of younger players played seniors last year and there’s even more this year. “We’re going well with numbers and

hopefully they will get better, with several guys in the metro area.” Milsom said they were happy with three senior teams at the moment, with a team in each of the junior age groups. They also have a girls under-17 team. The club is looking for more under-17 girls for this season. Milsom said they would love to add a women’s team in future to give the girls somewhere to progress to. There were several father-son combinations playing in the side last season, and three father-daughters already playing together this year. “I put it out to the girls who are 16, 17, that

I was looking for them to play in the seniors,” Milsom said. “The dad’s were just as excited as the girls to play in the same team. Having a third team, we were planning to get more younger players playing.” The first team has gone up a grade this season after winning division 2 premiership last season. It was the club’s first senior premiership since 2010-11 when the club was still known as Hesket. Milsom, who is in his second season as captain-coach, said he was loving it. “I came down two or three years ago and sat back as a player and saw the potential at the club. I loved it. I’m a teacher so I get involved in

the junior program as well. “If anything, it’s more exciting to see the young girls and boys playing in the seniors. It’s something I did as a kid and it’s fun to play with the older guys.” Hanging Rock has been playing in the GDCA’s regional round robin competition, while metro teams have been unable to play. Official men’s competition will get under way on November 21. Hanging Rock’s three teams all suffered losses on Saturday. Eagles get to work By Tara Murray Eynesbury Eagles are on track for the upcoming Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield season. With COVID-19 restriction announcements last week the Eagles, and the rest of the metro clubs in the GDCA, were given the go ahead to train and prepare for a season start date of November 21. Eagles captain-coach Tristian Francis said the uncertainty over restrictions meant a lot of things had been up in the air. “It’s good news, but now we’ve got to understand what the procedures are. The GDCA has released a statement on how the season might play out and we’ll go from there.” Francis said there had been a fair bit of interest to play at the club this season and they would field an extra team. He said with no football played this year, many were keen to have a hit. “We’ve put in that extra side, a one-day side,” he said. “A few of the footy guys are a lot more

keen and they want to get around everyone and in that team spirit. “I wouldn’t be surprised if a few more come out of the woodwork with the season confirmed to go ahead.” Francis said they had lost a couple of their young stars who were looking to test themselves at the next level. While they will miss them, he said it’s good to see them take that next step. “We can’t stop them from doing that and we know that we are a feeder club … what we are about is giving them a platform to get them ready for the next level.” Josh Francis has headed to Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association side Melton, while Alex Mowat will play at Yarraville. With those three stepping up, it gives some more youngsters an opportunity. “Cam Davis won the MVP in the twos last season as a 14-year-old and he was the club’s Flying young Eagle, so hopefully he will be able to play up,” Francis said. “Cody McLaughlin just turned 15 and will

play a big part of the season ahead.” Despite claiming the Jensen Shield premiership last season, after being the highest ranked side entering the grand final, which was cancelled due to COVID-19, the Eagles haven’t been promoted. Francis said the club had wanted to stay in the same grade, having struggled in the higher grade in the 2018-19 season. “We’re staying there and we are basically in the same grades as last year,” he said. “We thought we were quite fortunate to end up in the position we were in. “We gave ourselves a great opportunity after winning the semi-final and it put us in the driver’s seat [to claim the premiership]. “Was Diggers Rest the best side all year? Yes. Were we in the right spot at the right time, the answer was yes.” Francis said when COVID restrictions allowed, they would look to celebrate the premiership. “The question has been asked a few times,” he said. “We’ll do that when we’re allowed.”

Sports people across Melbourne breathed a sigh of relief last Monday when Premier Daniel Andrews announced the easing of lockdown restrictions. While many people in regional areas had been able to return to the training track, and in some cases to competition, no senior sports and training had been allowed in Melbourne, until now. From last Wednesday, metro clubs and teams were among those to make the most of the easing of restrictions. Senior teams were able to start training in groups, with non-contact competitions also allowed to start. It has meant cricket competitions, many of which are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, can get under way at both junior and senior level. Bowls Victoria and Baseball Victoria are also in the process of putting plans in place, with their seasons also expected to start in the coming weeks. Baseball Victoria chief executive Kristie Middleton said they were thrilled with the easing of restrictions. “We are working diligently to finalise these changes and confirm all details so our members can enjoy a safe and smooth return to activity with proper COVID-19 precautions in place,” she said. Bowls Victoria, which was scheduled to start its weekend pennant competitions the weekend just gone, will now start them on November 28. It wasn’t just the summer sports, affected positively by the news. The changes will allow the return of outdoor junior netball competitions and programs and non-contact training for adults at outdoor venues in metro regions. Those in regional areas were already able to play in junior competitions, while adults are still restricted to non-contact training in those regions. Metro basketball associations can also start outdoor training. Juniors are allowed to train with contact with up to 10 players per team and a maximum of 20 players on the court. In regional areas, they can have non-contact training indoors on top of the existing outdoor rules. Seniors are limited to training in groups of 10 outdoors, non-contact. Broadmeadows Basketball Association is among the associations to already start organising outdoor training for those wanting to be part of their rep programs. Tara Murray

‘Stronger’ Spotswood side ready for a challenge Spotswood president John Wheeler expects the side’s Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 1 team to be stronger than last season. The side which played finals in division 1 west last season has kept the core group of players together, led by playing coach Dan Schuppan and captain Mac Short. Wheeler said the younger players in the side, having had an extra 12 months under their belts, would form the basis of their improvement. Just one player from last season’s team, Cory Jacobs isn’t returning. Coming into the side is Gisborne premiership-winning captain Jarryd Vernon. Vernon has been one of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s best players in recent years as a top order bat and spin bowler. Wheeler said that Vernon’s leadership would also be important for the side. “He was the Gisborne captain and he’s a really good bat,” he said.

“Plus he bowls a little. “Dan has coached him before and was rapt that we spoke to him. He’s also played with Jakson Knight at Gisborne. “Jarryd brings that experience and we’ve got some young kids in the side … Mac is only 21 so that helps with the leadership as well.” Vernon already has a couple of games under his belt, having played with his former team the past few weeks. Gisborne is able to play competition as it is in a regional area. The VTCA is scheduled to kick off on November 21. Spotswood will face Craigieburn in the opening round. The competition this season will be all one-dayers with a best of three game grand final series. The division 1 competition has the best teams of division 1 west and north from last season join together in one division. Wheeler said they were looking forward to the challenge.

“It should be good,” he said. “You always want to play the best cricket you can.” Wheeler said they were hoping to hit the training track this week after restrictions had eased last week. He said they had to get a few things in place before they could start training. “We still have to get permits for it to work,” he said. “From tomorrow [last Wednesday] we’ll be getting groups to get the practice nets up and going. “Because we are doing work at the ground there’s no clubrooms at the moment either and there’s no synthetic nets either. “Our ground is in fantastic condition and as good as in the competition. Honey’s sweet success

Cats ready for new season

By Tara Murray Melbourne Vixens midcourter Tayla Honey experienced mixed emotions on the way to being part of the club’s Super Suncorp Netball Championship. Returning from an achilles injury which forced her to miss last season, Honey was unsure whether she would get to play netball at all this season due to COVID-19. The season eventually did get under way in a hub in Queensland, where Honey made her official debut for the Vixens. She and the Vixens went on to win the grand final against the West Coast Fever. Honey, who grew up Keilor Downs, said those early days when there was some uncertainty over the season were stressful. “I honestly felt physically sick,” she said. “It was very, very scary at times at the start of the year … obviously not knowing if we would have a season and, knowing what happened last year with my injury, it was very panicked. “It wasn’t ideal circumstances at all and the fact that I might not have been able to play any netball at all again, even though I was physically capable, that was going to make it harder.” Honey said when they were told they were going into a hub, she had no hesitation in entering it. The move up north would come just five weeks after Honey moved into a house with fellow Vixens Kate Eddy and Sacha McDonald. As well as her new housemates in the hub, Honey was lucky enough to have her mum, Melbourne Vixens assistant coach Di Honey up there as well. “It was so good to have mum up there,” Honey said. “Obviously the hub experience was hard at times and the fact that I had her to turn to was amazing. “I’m really grateful, but I did feel bad at some points, all the girls missing their families and I was pretty lucky.” A third member of the Honey family was also in Queensland in a hub – brother Josh Honey, who plays for AFL club Carlton. The two siblings didn’t manage to catch up with each other. For Honey, this season was about learning as much as possible and soaking everything in. Sitting behind Australian Diamond Liz Watson at wing attack, Honey wasn’t expecting much court time. She was thrilled when she stepped on court in round two to make her official debut. “When [coach] Simone [McKinnis] said to me to get ready to go on, it was just a surreal moment,” she said. “To know all the work that I did in the previous year had been to some benefit and it was a great feeling to get up there.” Honey started a couple of games late in the

season with Watson out injured. She didn’t get on the court in the finals, but was part of the action on the sidelines. “It was really nerve wracking, especially the grand final, especially with it being so close. I had absolute faith in the girls that they would bring it home.” Honey and the Vixens spent a couple of days

celebrating in Queensland before all starting to come back home. Next for her is ensuring that her fitness remains high. Honey remains uncontracted. “I want to keep my fitness … and do some different sort of training in the off season. “I like to do longer runs, which we don’t do in the season which is exciting for me.”

Hoppers Crossing is working hard behind the scenes ahead of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west season. With COVID-19 restrictions easing last week, the Cats returned to the training track ahead of a scheduled season start on November 21. Speaking a couple of days after the announcement that training could start, Cats president Jake Porter said it was a stressful time. “There’s lots to do and not enough time to do it,“ he said. “It’s great news that we can train again. We’re planning to start training in the next couple of days for the seniors, or at least do a walk-through about the COVID protocols and then get fully into training next week. “The juniors will start next week too.” Porter said they would look to field the same number of teams this year, which includes a senior women’s and veteran’s team. He said their men’s first XI side was similar to last season. “A couple of players have stepped away for family reasons,” he said. “Jermey Swan has come back to the club after a couple of years away and we’ve had a couple of people who have expressed interest in playing. We haven’t been able to have a look at them yet. “Hopefully we’ll have a few guys putting pressure on the first XI.” Jack Rhodes has been named captain-coach of the side this season. Rhodes was appointed to the role last season, but stood down before the season started. “Jack has a lot of experience at district level [premier] and has been at the club the last couple of seasons,” he said. “Getting down to the nitty gritty last season, he knew it was a great deal of work and the timing wasn’t right for him. “He still played last season and things have changed to allow him to coach. We’ve got a bit more coaching support around him as well.” The Cats finished the past season in seventh, missing finals on percentage. Porter said there was plenty of motivation to break into that top six. “We lost one of our own early in the season and the guys battled through the season,” he said. “A lot of guys were emotionally drained at the end. “They are motivated to take that next step.” The Cats will kick off their season on November 21 against Melton.
