Community shines bright Community resilience in the face of life’s challenges under lockdown will be celebrated in the lead-up to Christmas. Central West Shopping Centre in Braybrook is calling for creative children and community groups to collaborate on ‘The Star Project’. Anyone who would like to contribute is being invited to decorate Christmas Stars that will fill the ceilings of Central West as the days until Christmas count down. Central West marketing manager Gabriella Bowman said 2020 has been a tough year by anyone’s measure. “We look forward to giving Christmas a little extra boost of gratitude and sparkle,” she said. The centre is also asking people to include a word or two describing the feelings, thoughts and skills that they have relied on during the year. Stars can be collected from stores or central management and should be returned as soon as possible, to be ready for display from the third week of November. JASPER AND HUGO

Metro lockdown lifted By Goya Dmytryshchak Melburnians are today celebrating after the end of a 16-week lockdown, with cafes, restaurants and pubs to reopen but some limits on household visits remain. Victoria on Tuesday recorded no new cases of coronavirus or deaths for the second consecutive day since June 9. To date, 817 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria. Premier Daniel Andrews said under the third step, from 11.59pm on Tuesday, Melbourne would move from “stay home” to “stay safe”, with no restrictions on reasons to leave home.

However, the 25-kilometre travel limit from home and restrictions on travelling between Melbourne and regional Victoria remain. Two adults and their dependant children will be able to visit another household, with only one “visiting event” permitted each day. Visits must occur within the 25-kilometre limit. “I know the thing many people are missing is having people over to visit but, as we’ve seen, this virus is at its most dangerous when we’re indoors and relaxed and comfortable,” Mr Andrews said. “Workplaces will no longer need to be on the permitted work list to open and the ability to work will change to ‘if you can work from

home you must work from home’. “While the boundary is in place, work permits will still be required for workers from Melbourne travelling into regional Victoria and vice versa.” Mr Andrews said Melbourne’s cafes, restaurants and pubs could reopen with outdoor caps of 50 patrons and indoor limits of 20. Beauty and personal care services could resume. Outdoor contact sport for those aged 18 and under will also be permitted, along with non-contact sport for adults. Personal training, fitness and dance classes are allowed outside with up to 10 people, and up to 50 people are allowed at outdoor pools.

Outdoor entertainment venues, including libraries and community venues, can start hosting visitors. Mr Andrews said up to 20 people would be allowed for outdoor religious ceremonies and up to 10 inside. Weddings can have 10 people, and funerals 20. “From 8 November, and if we can continue driving case numbers down, the 25-kilometre limit will come off and Melbourne will be able to meet regional Victoria at the same level,” Mr Andrews said. Mr Andrews said he would provide an update on November 8 on the timelines and thresholds for taking the last step.
