Wyndham Westlink, the fast rail to Geelong and upgrades to the Wyndham Vale train line top Wyndham council’s wishlist for federal and state goverment support. The council is pushing to have the projects included on next year’s National Infastructure Priority List which drives government decisions on future infrastructure investments. Mayor Josh Gilligan said securing a place on the priority list would assist council’s advocacy for each of the projects. “As our population grows, so does traffic congestion, and building Westlink is vital to relieving this congestion,” Cr Gilligan said. “But we need more than new roads to improve transport in and out of Wyndham – that’s why we also need investment in the Western Rail Plan, which includes the electrification of the Wyndham Vale line.” The federal Opposition last year said it would commit $50 million to help combat traffic congestion in the outer west, including the construction of a continuous link – named Wyndham Westlink – from Tarneit, Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes and Werribee to the Princes Freeway. “A key piece of infrastructure needed for the westlink project is the Ison Road bridge, which will provide a game-changing link from the west of Wyndham across the Geelong railway line to the Princes Freeway,” Cr Gilligan said. He said the Western Rail Plan would provide urgently needed capacity for additional trains to Wyndham Vale and Tarneit, improving the commuting experience for Wyndham residents. Cr Gilligan said the council was “grateful” to the state government for supporting some of its priority projects in the past. “In recent years, we have been calling for more parking for commuters at train stations to ease congestion on our roads,” he said. “The state government has agreed to build up to 1600 new and upgraded carparks at Wyndham Vale, Werribee, and Tarneit train stations as part of its $150 million Carparks for Commuters Fund.” Details: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ advocacy

Point Cook youngster Hanna has started a guinea pig rental business to help local children experience the joys of pet ownership. Hanna, 10, said that apart from temporarily enjoying the company of a guinea pig, the idea behind her business is to help families decide if they would like to purchase their own pet guinea pig. Hanna, who owns 12 guinea pigs, started the business in July. Due to word-of-mouth and Facebook, Hanna’s Guinea Pig Experience has become popular in Point Cook during the COVID-19 lockdown. “The most important thing in this business is the wellbeing of the guinea pigs,” Hanna said. “I love my guinea pigs and I don’t want them to get sick or anything like that. “The second most important thing is seeing the smiles and happy faces of the children and families when they see the guinea pigs.” Hanna said she supplies each customer with dry food, litter and a guinea pig cage. She is also happy to re-home unwanted guinea pigs. To rent a guinea pig for two weeks is $50, three weeks is $70 and four weeks is $80, along with a security deposit of $150.
