Students take the reins This has been a milestone year for leadership at Loyola College. Student leadership has always been an integral part of the college; however, it was felt there was a lack of student action and voice, so a new role of student leadership co-ordinator was created.

James Falcone has taken up the role of student leadership co-ordinator and works with students who have been appointed to leadership positions across years 7-12.

“On top of their titled role, students in leadership are also assigned a portfolio group to work in for the year,” Mr Falcone says.

“In the portfolio students choose any issue relevant to their portfolio’s mission statement and work together to promote actions of social justice.

“The students totally drive the portfolio while I merely facilitate the meetings. There have been some great successes throughout 2020 despite trying circumstances.

“The Ignatian mission portfolio has run a successful social media campaign educating Loyola’s Instagram community about the persecution of the Rohingya people.

“The sustainability portfolio promoted sustainable tips and tricks while in lockdown, including plating your own fruit and vegetables.

“The social justice portfolio decided to focus on reconciliation week and has pushed to create curriculum change, now having the movie In my Blood it Runs shown to all year 9 students to promote cultural understanding of our nation’s first people.

“Finally, the wellbeing portfolio is looking at canteen reforms, running surveys and petitions to increase canteen nutrition, and is now working on a colour run to raise awareness for mental health.

“Overall, 2020 has been a major success.

Webinars flip the power This month, Al Siraat College, in collaboration with Our Race, will be hosting the much anticipated Transformational Ethical Storytelling Webinar.

The webinar is a part of the Interfaith Youth Forum project, a Victorian government-funded initiative taking a grassroots approach to racial and religious discrimination.

The webinars in this series are designed to give people the resources, skills and awareness of the ongoing issues of racial and religious discrimination and bias. They are best suited for educators, students, community groups, and anyone managing diverse teams.

“Our Race is an anti-racism storytelling organisation which delves deep into storytelling practices,” he says.

“We take a person- and community-centred

collaborative model to ensure the voices most impacted by racial and social injustices are genuinely heard.

“The key objective … is to call out racist and other oppressive practices, while calling in anti-racist ones so that we can flip the power of storytelling.”

Education that offers a world of opportunities Parade College has been opening a world of opportunities for young men for more than 150 years.

The college’s Bundoora and Preston campuses belong to the national body of Catholic schools known as Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA).

Parade College, in common with these schools, takes its inspiration from Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers through the active promotion of academic excellence.

Preparing your child for school Starting school is a momentous occasion in a child’s life.

It’s a major milestone for children and their parents, and one that’s filled with a mix of emotions.

To help make the transition as smooth as possible, there are many things mums and dads can do to prepare their child.

Emeritus Professor Bob Perry is an education expert in transitions, having developed a guide featuring multiple case studies of parents, teachers and kids during the transition to school.

Professor Perry says while beginning primary school can be a challenge, most children find it enjoyable.

“Children of that age want to grow up – they see excitement in growing up and they want school to be different. So we shouldn’t worry that it is different as the kids want it that way,” he explains.

The move from kindergarten to primary school, he says, is more about a child’s social and emotional development, than academic.

Here, Professor Perry shares his top tips to help a child prepare for primary school.

Talk Start talking to your children about school.

This includes talking about the school itself, what it was like when you went to school, what’s changed since you went to school and what it will be like for your child. Ask your child about what’s concerning them and what are they looking forward to? Like most people, children will bottle things up unless they are specifically asked about them. For example, the child may be particularly worried about the playground – sometimes playgrounds can be a bit daunting.

Managing expectations The key is being honest, even if you didn’t particularly like school. Parents can talk about some of the positive things that did happen when they were at school. Be honest about it, but make sure you know what will happen when they go to school. For example, I know some parents who talk about children lining up before going into classroom – this doesn’t happen at some schools any more. If a child sees that doesn’t happen then the parent loses some credibility with the child. It’s important for parents to talk to the principal or teacher about what happens in that particular school.

Another thing is many children wish they’d known before their first day is that everyone wears a school uniform. We often make a big deal about getting their uniform but forget to tell them everyone will be dressed the same.

Parents need to make sure this happens. If they know their child has additional needs, the school has to be aware of it before they can do anything about it.

What to do at home

Lunch boxes Buy a lunch box and check your child can open it. There seems to be a tendency to buy the latest superhero lunchbox or whatever the trend is, but the critical thing is that your child can actually open it. Talk to your child about having lunch at school and be sure to tell them that you don’t eat everything at once!

Also make sure you can pack lunches that don’t require wrap or foil, so that the kids don’t have trouble unwrapping their food.

Toilets Going to public toilets is critical for both boys and girls. School toilets are different to home toilets and preschool toilets. While school toilets have improved a great deal, they aren’t as sparkling clean as the toilet at home or at kindy.

And, for the first time, kids will have to make a choice about whether they go to the boys toilets or girls toilets – they need to know about that.

For boys it is important they know that there are different ways of going to toilet other than standing over a bowl. These are the practical things.

While you are there, take them to the toilet!

Meet and greet Before the school year begins, every parent should take their child to the school to meet the principal and the potential teacher. It’s important to take your child with you as you want them to feel a sense of belonging. You need to know the teacher, so you don’t have to get on the phone and start introducing yourself if there’s a problem.

Playground practice Take your child to big public spaces. Take them to the park and let them play on the playground equipment. Schools have playgrounds that are bigger than they are used to with more people in them and less adults per child. The children

After school care This is something that tends to be forgotten.

After school care is another transition that can be challenging. Certainly at prep level you go there to play, but you have to get there.

For some kids that means walking across the playground, but for others it will involve getting a bus. The child needs to be prepared for that. They need to go and visit the after school care place. Sometimes it’s not a bad idea for kids to go to vacation care for a couple of days to get used to that transition. However this only works if the actual after school place they will be going to offers vacation care.

Special needs Often with children who have special needs, there will have been a very extensive transition to school program. This is generally instigated by the parent or kindy teacher. Providing the child is identified as having special needs, there is usually meetings between school representatives, principals, the teacher, kindy

Don’t organise a big party to celebrate starting school in the first week. Your child will be too tired – it’s a big change. Like many people, kids are not necessarily going to be ready to talk about their day as soon as they walk in the door or get in the car. Sometimes there needs to be tricks played to get the kids talking. Sometimes it’s worth parents just talking with teacher at the end of the day and asking them how things are going. At least that gives the parent a way in by saying ‘Ms So and So said you enjoyed doing such and such today, would you like doing more of that at home?’ It’s all about communicating when you know more about what’s going on.

Sometimes the child won’t want to talk and that’s OK. However, if they spend the first six months not wanting to talk you may want to have a yarn to the teacher about it.

What if my child comes home upset Before your child comes home upset, you need to know the teacher so you don’t have to get on the phone and start introducing yourself. You want to get straight down to the business and say ‘we have a problem’. It is a problem that everyone – the teacher, parent, school and child will have to work out together. It’s possible your child will come home and throw their bag down and say ‘I’m not going back there’ because of an incident. The parent needs to get straight onto the teacher. The big problem is if a parent tries to solve problem themselves as they only know part of the story.

Boost for tennis lovers Tennis players will be serving aces after the completion of the redevelopment of the TH Hurrey Reserve in Yan Yean.

The $4.8 million project, which started last year, includes a new pavilion with public toilets, a new carpark with a safer entrance, a barbebcue area and landscaping to improve the facility.

There has also been the addition of two new hard courts to take the total to six courts, making it Whittlesea’s first district-level facility.

Two of the existing synthetic grass courts were also upgraded.

Yan Yean Tennis Club senior coach James Howard said the exciting redevelopment will support the participation growth at the club and provide a space for Doreen, Mernda and Whittlesea communities to gather after lockdown restrictions are lifted.

“The courts are amazing, they’re the same surface as the Australian Open,” he said.

“To have a full kitchen, male and female toilets and showers, we’re very very lucky.”

Lockdown extended

By Tara Murray Whittlesea and Hume will be in stage 4 lockdown for at least another two weeks from September 13 as part of the state’s roadmap out of COVID-19.

On Sunday, Premier Daniel Andrews announced a “steady and safe” plan to what he described as a “covid normal”.

He said Victoria risked a third wave of coronavirus by Christmas if restrictions were lifted too quickly.

“I want to get the place open, and I want to

keep it open,” Mr Andrews said. “There is no choice for us, there is only one option.

“I want a Christmas that is as close to normal as possible, and this is the only way.”

From September 13, stage4 lockdown will be extended for two weeks, however outdoor exercise will be increased to two hours a day and the curfew will begin at 9pm.

Public gatherings will increase to two people for a maximum of two hours and playgrounds will reopen. People living alone will be able to form a ‘single social bubble’, enabling one person to visit them.

Further restrictions will be eased from September 28, subject to public health advice and if average daily cases are 30 to 50 in metro Melbourne over the previous 14 days.

There will be a return to face-to-face teaching for junior pupils, VCE and VCAL and specialists schools from October 12.

Meanwhile, Whittlesea council announced an additional $800,000 in pandemic relief measures across two programs.

Council will commit $500,000 to a Business Relief and Resilience Program to help local businesses get back on their feet, with grants of

$5000 available. Another $300,000 will extend the Emergency Relief Fund which was formed in April.

Whittlesea panel of administrators chair Lydia Wilson said residents and businesses need more relief and support right now.

“The initial $200,000 Emergency Relief Fund is almost exhausted, having provided financial grants to 18 non-government organisations on the frontline.”

The number of active cases in Whittlesea and Hume continues to fall, with 79 cases in Whittlesea and 128 cases in Hume as of Sunday.

Support for community and local businesses A message from our Chair, Panel of Administrators Lydia Wilson There is no doubt that our community and our local businesses are doing it tough with all the interruptions that have occurred these past five months.

Early results from our Community Impact Survey show 46 per cent of people who participated are having difficulty accessing items they need. Being unable to go shopping or have shopping delivered was reported as the most common reason.

In April, Council announced a $200,000 Emergency Relief Fund to provide nongovernment organisations at the front-line of delivering basic items along with access to other support services.

This fund has delivered financial relief for 18 organisations and in turn has helped around 6,000 people living in the City of Whittlesea.

We are not at the recovery stage of this pandemic yet and more relief for our community is required.

Council has topped-up the Emergency Relief Fund with $300,000 to continue supporting those agencies and support groups who are struggling to meet growing demands on their services.

We are also pleased to announce a $500,000 Business Relief and Resilience Program.

This program will include grants of up to $5,000 to help local businesses get back on their feet after significant interruption to operations and trade. Details will be on our website from Friday 11 September.

These relief initiatives have been funded from our cash surplus achieved in 2019/20.

We will still be able to deliver on the projects and activities where grants and other funding sources were provided in advance, which makes up most of the surplus.

Incinerator plan knocked back

By Tara Murray A bid to build a waste incinerator in Craigieburn has been rejected by Hume council.

Council officers said the application by ENRGX to build a waste-to-energy plant on Amaroo Road failed to provide key information about how the facility would operate and its potential impacts on the community and environment.

At a recent planning meeting councillors voted against the proposal. Cr Jack Medcraft did not vote due to a conflict of interest.

More than 1300 residents signed a petition against the facility, 190 people made submissions and 24 people spoke against the proposal at the council meeting.

Under the proposal, about 1500 tonnes of household, construction and demolition waste would have been incinerated each day to produce up to 100 megawatts of electricity.

Mayor Carly Moore said the proposal had created more interest than any other issue in her time on council.

Lalor stalwart hangs up his scissors It was a sad moment last week when Rino Minniti handed back the keys to his Lalor salon.

Mr Minniti, who first opened a salon in 1969 has decided to hang up his scissors and razor after 51 years.

He had hoped to retire at the end of this year, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to bring his plans forward.

“I didn’t want it to happen so early, so it’s a bit of a shock after 51 years,” he said.

“I’m very sorry that I didn’t get to say goodbye to my customers. I’ve always been around people and discussing whatever.

“I never dreamed that I would be doing it for so long. Last year was such a big milestone.”

Mr Minniti set up Rino’s Unisex Salon on May Road a couple of years after opening his first salon.

He said a lot had changed since he first started out.

He said the 1980s were probably the hardest time, because long hair for men was in fashion and not as many people wanted haircuts.

Mr Minniti was planning to spend his retirement travelling, but that has been put back due to the pandemic.

He said he would continue to help his wife Josie with fundraising work for Northern Hospital when they are allowed.

“I’ve got my garden, but that’s not enough to keep me going every day.”

While he couldn’t say goodbye to his customers in person, he has a message for them: “Thank you for these years and the ongoing patronage and loyalty to the salon.

“When everything opens up, I’ll be going to the shopping centre and I’m sure I’ll meet up with some of you.”

“Our community has every right to be concerned about a facility of this type being built in their own backyard when the potential impacts on their own health are unclear.”

Cash boost for stadium revamp The Mill Park Basketball Stadium upgrade will be fast-tracked following a funding boost from the state government.

The government will contribute $1 million to the project as part of its Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program.

The $2.8 million redevelopment will include new female and family change rooms, seating upgrades, accessible public toilets, a modern kitchen and fit-for-purpose spaces, along with upgrades to heating, cooling, lighting and water use.

Whittlesea panel of administrators chair Lydia Wilson welcomed the funding.

“Redeveloping Mill Park Basketball Stadium was identified in our Netball and Basketball Strategy as essential to meet the growing needs of basketball over the next 20 years,” Ms Wilson said.

“This funding is great news for the Mill Park community and everyone that comes from far and wide to play at this much-loved facility.

“We look forward to seeing the transformation of Mill Park Basketball Stadium into an accessible and sustainable community hub.”

Basketball Victoria chief executive Nick Honey said it was a great investment by the state government.

“The upgrade to Mill Park Stadium will provide the 5000-plus members of the association a more accessible, inclusive and inviting home venue that will better service and represent the needs of the community.”

Construction is expected to start in 2021.

Lalor Secondary College students are putting their skills to good use as they look to find ways to help people get through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Year 10 student Hanz Galaraga won the innovation award at the school’s science fair for his electronic hands-free sanitiser dispenser.

“My teachers explained to me that we were doing this electronics project and what I came up with was the hands-free hand sanitiser because of the lockdown,” he explained.

“I thought there had to be an easier way to do it. It took less than a month from the planning stage to completing the project. I had fun making it.”

Science teacher Matt Tempone said the school was looking for ways for students to

help the local community.

“Just because you are 15 or 16 and there’s a whole global pandemic it doesn’t mean you can’t contribute.

“The junior kids had to build a race car earlier on and the older kids were given real-world problems to come up with a way to fix it.”

One of their ideas was to make face shields and ear protectors.

The students designed the shields and Mr Tempone printed them using a 3D printer.

They have since made 200 face shields and several mask ear protectors. A Brisbane-based company came on board to sanitise the items before distributing them to health providers.

The Victorian government has allocated $400,000 towards a new pavilion at Seth Raistrick Recreation Reserve in Campbellfield. The upgrade of the reserve, which is the home of the Hume Spears Sports Club, is one of 13 projects to receive grants through the World Game Facilities Fund.

Testing site fire Police are investigating a fire at a COVID-19 testing site in Mernda on August 31. Three CFA units attended the Waterview Drive site at 10.40pm after one of two security guards on duty at the closed site noticed a fire. The fire was quickly extinguished but caused minor damage to the side of a marquee.

Police want to speak to three men, aged in their 20s, who were spoken to by the security guards shortly before the fire started. Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.

Green light for ‘New Epping’

By Tara Murray The redevelopment of the former Epping Quarry is a step closer after the state government gave the green light to rezone land for the project.

The site will be rezoned from industrial to mixed-use to pave the way for the New Epping development, which the developer says is one of the most ambitious urban renewal projects in Australia.

Riverlee Development, which purchased the site in 2015, said the 51-hectare redevelopment

would create a new “city in the suburbs” to help cater for the booming northern growth corridor.

It will include affordable housing, townhouses and apartments; a premium commercial office precinct; a new medical precinct, including a private hospital; and a variety of lifestyle and amenity offerings.

“The rehabilitation of the former Epping Quarry is one of the largest projects we have undertaken and will be one of the most

rewarding due to the sheer impact it will have on the growing region, economically, environmentally and socially,” Mr Lee said.

“By drawing inspiration from the best of Melbourne’s inner-city and delivering it in the city’s north, Epping has the potential to become a city within the suburbs; an epi-centre of activity that will put Epping on the map as a true story of urban regeneration.”

It’s expected more than 5000 jobs will be created during construction and more than 3100 people are forecast to work on the site once it has been completed.

Spoonville arrives Ms Bettanin said the kids loved making the spoons and have enjoyed following the progress to see whether there are any other spoons added.

She said it was a good way to share community spirit in a non-contact way.

There are now more than 60 spoons at the North Shore Drive location and Ms Bettanin said she had seen people add spoons in their yards and on nature strips.

“My kids loved the process,” she said. “It gave them an idea to fill some time.

“They made their own characters. When I did post a picture on social media, I was blown away with the tags and comments.”

Spoonville has made its way to Craigieburn.

The worldwide craze which involves children decorating spoons and putting them in a public place has popped up in several locations, including in Hume and Whittlesea.

Bianca Bettanin was behind the idea to start Spoonville near the Waterside Cafe on North Shore Drive, Craigieburn.

“It started online with a few blogging mums who did it in their suburb,” she said.

“The first [COVID-19] isolation there was the teddy bear hunt and the drawing of rainbows with chalk to keep the kids happy in isolation.

“So many families walk around the lake there, so I thought I would create one [Spoonville] in Craigieburn.”

Despite negative feedback when she initially posted the idea to Facebook, Ms Bettanin and her children, Siena and Frankie, her sister Melissa Gavalakis and her daughters, Mia and Evie, decided to make a Spoonville.

Matildas call La Trobe Uni home

By Tara Murray La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus will be home to the Australian women’s soccer team.

The state government recently committed $1.5 million to plan and design a new facility for the Matildas, along with a separate State Rugby Union Centre, which will both be part of the university’s Sports Park.

The university was one of several locations vying for the Matildas’ new home, including the City of Casey, Maroondah, Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Darebin and Shepparton.

It’s hoped the first stage of the soccer facility will be ready ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which is being held in Australia and New Zealand.

Football Victoria chief executive Peter Filopoulos is delighted that after two years of driving the project they had secured the backing of the state government for crucial planning works. The federal government has already committed $15 million towards the construction of the home of the Matildas.

The first two stages of the university’s Sports Park plan include a six-court indoor stadium, research laboratories and facilities for soccer, football, cricket and baseball.

La Trobe Vice-Chancellor John Dewar said the facility was already world class and this would provide further benefits for students and those living in the north. The State Rugby Union Centre will include training and administration space for programs including the Melbourne Rebels’ Super W team.

Cooking for success A Thomastown mum is using her kebab-making skills to help others.

Having grown up in the industry, Birgul (Bea) Tercan, is now teaching others the skills needed to run a successful kebab business.

It has earned her a spot as a finalist in the AusMumpreneur Awards in the multicultural business excellence and food and beverage categories.

The winners will be named later this month.

Ms Tercan’s father owned several kebab stores across Australia, where she learnt the business and found her love for the industry.

“He worked and owned several stores in Victoria and Queensland, including the first kebab store in Bundaberg,” she said “He was always helping other people open shops and he would say that we have to help people.”

Ms Tercan opened her own store in Thomastown, but with two young children, she later sold it and started her business, ‘B by B’.

“After working in the kebab industry for over 20 years I saw a need to train kebab owners,” she said. “My business helps new owners start their kebab businesses from scratch and bring it into a fully operational model.”

COVID-19 has forced Ms Tercan to change her business, so she’s started to produce online videos to help out clients.

She’s also studying to help take her skills and business to the next level.

Long term, Ms Tercan wants to see her content used in schools and universities to help people learn the industry before getting into it.

She said there were plenty of benefits to balancing business and motherhood.

“The flexibility to be able to be with my family … to see them grow and to be a role model for my kids, as there is no age limit to learning new skills and discovering your passion.”

New shopping centre on time

By Tara Murray Donnybrook Cricket Club has received a massive boost with Platform estate coming on board as a sponsor for the next 10 years.

The estate, which is being built in Donnybrook

by Blueways Group, has more than 2000 lots and is becoming a growing community.

Cricket club president Noel Seipolt said while the club has had sponsors over the years, it’s never had a sponsor sign on for 10 years.

He said the deal would help the club become more powerful as the local community grows.

“Ten years is really good to have a sponsor

with all the new stuff coming up around Donnybrook the club is going to continue to grow,” he said. “There’s a new ground being built.”

The club began in 1976 with one side and is now up to at least six sides. It started Milo junior cricket three years ago and last season had three junior teams for the first time.

“We had two under-10s sides and an under-12 side,” Seipolt said. “Kids are everywhere at training plus there’s their siblings, I’ve never seen anything like it before at the club.”

The club will enter a turf team for the first time in the 2021-22 season.

Blueways Group development director Andrew Wyatt said they had never offered a 10-year sponsorship before, but said the decision was reflective of wanting to be part of the community.

“Offering a 10-year sponsorship is unheard of in sport and the community,” he said.

“Our first thing is to try and get into the local community and give back and support the kids and the local community.

“We believe the fabric and the make-up of local areas includes the sporting clubs. The club will grow in numbers and will need that support.”

Ten-year deal for club

The first stage of the Merrifield City Shopping Centre remains on track to open later this year.

QIC Global Real Estate director of Australian investment management, Daryl Stubbings, said while COVID-19 was providing some challenges, they were still expecting stage one of the Mickleham shopping centre to be open this year.

“We remain on track to open the first stage of Merrifield City prior to Christmas,” he said.

“This first stage involves the introduction of the area’s first Coles and a number of other specialty retailers that combined will serve the essential and everyday needs of Merrifield residents at a time when the community needs it most.

“We acknowledge the impact the ongoing stage 4 restrictions in Melbourne have had on the construction industry and, as is the case across the city, construction milestones for the Merrifield City development have been slightly extended, meaning that the remaining specialty retailers will open in a staged manner early in the new year.”

Mr Stubbing said despite some delays in the second stage they were well advanced in preparations for incoming retailers. Chemist Warehouse, Rust & Stone Salon and Beauty Genesis are among the retailers that will be opening at Merrifield City.

Post changes after parcel boom

By Tara Murray Some Hume and Whittlesea residents will have noticed changes to their mail delivery, with letter delivery temporarily changed to every second business day.

Australia Post made the changes to the postal service last month due to the changing needs of customers during COVID-19.

Letters will be delivered every second day or five times a fortnight in certain areas, but additional Australia Post delivery parcel vans will hit the streets to cater for the rise in parcel

deliveries. Among the suburbs affected by the changes are Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park, Mickleham, Kalkallo, Donnybrook (postcode 3064) Yarrambat (postcode 3091), Wollert (postcode 3750), Wildwood and Sunbury (postcode 3429).

Australia Post general manager deliveries south Shane Plant said the move was part of temporary changes to Australia Post’s performance standards and services, announced in April, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said residents were already complaining about delays in their mail. He said he’s heard stories of bills coming the day before they were due, medical forms arriving after the date they needed to filled out and medicines being delayed.

Despite her success, Vivian doesn’t have a career in design in mind. Instead, she wants to be a voice actor.

St Monica’s College principal Brian Hanley congratulated the students.

“To be so successful in this prestigious national competition is an amazing achievement and I congratulate Vivian and Miriam on their wonderful results,” he said.

“Their designs were well regarded by the esteemed judging panel who placed them the two best designs in their category in Australia.

“Their win also provides great inspiration to their fellow students studying this subject.”

St Monica’s College students tasted success at the Wool4School annual student design competition.

The Australia-wide competition invites students to design an outfit using a minimum of 70 per cent wool to showcase their creative and innovative side St Monica’s College year 11 student Vivian Ly won the senior designers category, with her friend and fellow year 11 student Miriam Trezise finishing runner-up.

Both girls study textile design as a subject.

Vivian said she was very surprised to have won the award.

“I based mine off a flora and fauna theme … and added a Chinese flavour, as I’m a ChineseAustralian,” she said.

“It was something that I enjoyed making.”

The students had to create a mood board for the design and then create a statement talking about the design.

North a virus hot spot

According to the Department of Health and

Human Services, there were three active cases of COVID-19 in Hume as of Monday. The municipality has recorded 72 cases since the pandemic began. Neighbouring Whittlesea has recorded no active cases since June 7.

In Brimbank, one case remains active. There have been a total of 73 cases in the municipality.

There were no active cases in Melton, Maribyrnong or Hobsons Bay as of Monday, according to the state government.

The warning follows the news that four school students from the northern and western

suburbs tested positive to the virus.

Keilor Downs Secondary College was closed for deep cleaning on May 29 after a student returned a positive test.

A student from St Albans Secondary College also tested positive for the virus after taking part in a class with the infected Keilor Downs student. A grade two pupil at Holy Eucharist Primary School in St Albans South also tested positive. Craigieburn’s Newbury Primary School was closed for cleaning on June 5 after a prep pupil tested positive.

Tribute to our animal volunteers Edgar’s Mission has come a long way since it’s establishment in 2003.

The Lancefield animal sanctuary is now home to more than 400 farm animals including Crocodile Rock the lamb and Sunny the pig.

But it was one pig, Edgar Alan Pig, that changed the lives of farm founder Pam Ahern and countless animals.

After Edgar trotted into Pam’s world, she knew he needed a place to grow and thrive.

That’s when the idea of building an animal sanctuary came about.

Pam gave up her full-time job and decided to dedicate her life to protecting farm animals and provide shelter at Edgar’s Mission for homeless, abused, injured and abandoned animals.

Seventeen years on and the farm has rescued more than 5000 animals in need, and has turned into a much-loved tourist attraction.

In recent times, the COVID-19 pandemic has put a stop to events and visitor tours at the farm.

But the staff, volunteers and animals haven’t let the virus dampen their spirits.

Star Weekly photographer Damjan Janevski captured the smiles of the feathered, furry and cuddly residents of Edgar’s Mission.

Colour it MUESLI BARS Ingredients 125ml honey 125g butter 3 cups rolled oats 1 cup Rice Bubbles 1 cup sultanas

1/2 cup apricots (chopped) 1/2 cup desiccated coconut 1/4 cup pepitas 1/4 cup sugar (optional)

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).

2. Grease and line a slice tray (31cm x 22cm) with baking paper.

3. Combine honey and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until butter melts and combines with honey.

4. Bring to the boil and cook for 2 minutes or until syrup thickens slightly. Remove from heat.

5. Combine remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Pour over the hot syrup and stir to combine.

6. Spoon into prepared pan and press firmly to make sure the mixture will stick together.

7. Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden.

Cool and then refrigerate until well chilled and cut into slices (makes 24 slices).

TIP: Try making these with different fruits.

Ingredients 3 parts dishwashing liquid 1 part glycerine 7 parts water Method 1. Pour all ingredients into a container and stir gently.

2. Let the mixture sit for as long as you can - the longer it sits, the better it will work.

3. Use plastic bubble wands, pipe cleaners bent to shape or have a hunt around the house and see what else you can find to use as your bubble wand (ask a grown up if it’s okay to use it first though!).

4. Dip wand into the mixture to cover the loop and wave through the air to create bubbles.

Tip: Oil, sugar and honey can all be used as glycerine substitutes.

Renault makes smart move

Renault Kadjar is a midsize SUV that is a co-design between French Renault and Japanese Nissan. These companies have been working together successfully for many years.

Like many in this class it has a leaning towards being a comfortable people mover rather than to harsh off-road work. That’s exactly what buyers want, so it’s a smart design.

However, if you want to do some light to moderate off-road driving the Kadjar is protected by front and rear skid plates.

Kadjar is offered in Life, Zen and Intens variants. Our test car was the Kadjar Intens.

Styling is attractive, but somehow we had expected a bit more French flair to make it stand out from its many, mainly Asian, competitors.

At the front, Kadjar carries over the C-shape light signature from the Renault range. Though it shares much of its bodywork with the Nissan Qashqai the front is clearly identifiable as a Renault thanks to a standout version of the company’s diamond in the centre of the grille.

As well as the aforementioned front and rear skid plates, there are also lower door protective mouldings. Black wheel arch extensions and anodised satin grey roof bars.
