The truth is out there People are being invited to film their reaction to a UFO sighting for a movie being made during Victoria’s COVID-19 lockdowns. Toxic Alien Zombie Babes from Outer Space, directed by Footscray’s Gerardo Chierchia, will feature people’s self-shot footage within the film and in the credits. The brainchild of producer David Black, the film is a tongue-in-cheek sci-fi/horror that pays homage to cult classics such as War of the Worlds, Plan 9 from Outer Space and Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. Black said people were being invited to use a phone to film their reaction to a UFO sighting, and a UFO would later be superimposed on the self-shot footage. “It’s a simple scene: how would you react if you saw a UFO? Do they scream? Do they say, ‘Oh my God?’ “We’re going to select five to go in the film but we’re also going to collect as many as possible afterwards for the credits.” People can upload their footage until the end of September to: facebook.com/ groups/UfoScreamScene/ Goya Dmytryshchak

Backing local business By Ewen McRae Moorabool council is hoping a big investment in local business will help the region quickly recover in the post-pandemic world. Council recently announced it was pouring $4.23 million into businesses within the municipality and investing in more than 190 local suppliers. It comes on top of a deferral of rates, with no interest, until September 30, while also waiving rent till September 30 for businesses using
council buildings and facilities Moorabool mayor David Edwards said it was as much about supporting business for the long term as it was helping them recover while the pandemic continues. “We are looking to the future to ensure our economy continues to thrive now and in a post-COVID world,” Cr Edwards said. “This year, we have contributed $4.233m to local businesses alone. “We have created a local supplier panel to deliver services to the shire. In addition, we are
continuing to look at how we can better build our local supply chain to meet the needs of the shire.” Council is also supporting local hospitality businesses forced to close due to stage 3 COVID-19 restrictions, with the relaunch of the successful ‘Hungry? Order Local’ campaign. The campaign encourages residents to purchase takeaway from a catalogue of local restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs. “Local suppliers benefit under our Procurement Policy with a five per cent local
price preferencing, and we wholeheartedly encourage locals to tender for projects we advertise through Tenderlink,” Cr Edwards said. “Our shire is made up of many small businesses and it’s so important that these businesses survive and prosper once we move past restrictions. “When business owners are doing well and making money, they tend to spend that money at other businesses – keeping our local economy ticking along.”

Last week, an exciting new plan that aims to improve liveability and boost jobs in the region was launched. Titled the North and West Melbourne City Deal Plan 2020-2040, our Council is one of the 13 councils in Melbourne’s north and west to contribute to this long-term vision.

Coburn Ward with Cr Sophie Ramsey With the local government elections fast approaching, I’d like to take this opportunity to express how humbled and privileged I’ve been to represent this diverse and vibrant community for the past 19 years. It’s been a pleasure serving this wonderful City, which will always hold a special place in my heart. Council prides itself on investing in quality sporting facilities, not least of which is the new, six-court sports stadium, currently under construction in Cobblebank. This $31 million facility is the largest project undertaken by Council, and I am thrilled to have been able to put forward this initiative. The past six months have been tough on everyone, yet this community has repeatedly proven just how resilient it can be. That’s why I’m so proud to be part of a council that’s not only responsive to the needs of our
Stop the soil Did you know that contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project could be dumped in our area if a proposal by Cleanaway is approved? Cleanaway has proposed to accept the contaminated soil at the Melbourne Regional Landfill in Ravenhall, which neighbours Caroline Springs, Burnside, Albanvale, and Deer Park. We are absolutely opposed to dumping contaminated soil in an area where families live and work.
residents during COVID-19, but has shown real initiative in creating positive outcomes, and offering financial relief, at a time when many residents are experiencing genuine hardship. These include the waiver of $200 on fourth quarter 2019/2020 rates instalments; increasing the pensioner rebate to $85; and framing the 2020/2021 budget around a zero per cent rate increase.
Not only could this soil compromise our local environment, it would bring 460 additional truck movements every day to local roads adding to existing congestion. This decision is out of Council’s hands. However, you can help by joining our Stop the soil campaign and asking the Victorian Government and Transurban not to dump contaminated soil in our area.
We’re also continuing to advocate for the construction of the Melton Hospital, stopping toxic soil from the West Gate Tunnel project being stored in Ravenhall, and upgrading the Western Highway within the City of Melton. This community is unstoppable, and I know that our greatest achievements are yet to come. You all inspire me daily and together we will continue to make a difference. Don’t hesitate to contact me at sophie.ramsey@melton.vic.gov.au or on 0412 584 067. I’d love to hear your thoughts about Coburn Ward.

It was exciting to see that among the 66 transformative projects detailed in the plan were the new Melton Hospital; electrification of the Melton line as part of the Western Rail Plan; Western Highway upgrade; Outer Metropolitan Ring; and Western Intermodal Freight Precinct. We’re now hoping the plan will be endorsed by the federal and state governments, which would allow us to collaborate on priorities that would address local needs, plan for growth and generate significant investment locally and nationally. Speaking of investment for our community, the Victorian Government has announced $1.18 million in funding towards a new, purpose-built soccer pavilion at MacPherson Park Recreation Reserve in Toolern Vale. The pavilion will form part of stage two of the facility’s redevelopment and is set to begin construction early next year. We’re grateful to the state government for helping us to continue a project that will not only make a big difference to our fast growing sporting community, but will also boost the local economy and create more local jobs. Our Stop the Soil campaign has already attracted more than 1500 signatures, all urging the state government and Transurban not to dump contaminated West Gate Tunnel soil at the Melbourne Regional Landfill, which is located in our area. Thank you to everyone supporting this campaign. If you object to this proposal, now is the time to let the decision-makers know. Sign the petition at stopthesoil.com.au

Virus numbers give hope By Ewen McRae Active cases of COVID-19 in Melton have fallen sharply again. There were 147 active cases of the virus as of Sunday, almost 100 less than the same time last week, as the case numbers across the state continue to fall. It is the lowest number of active cases in the Melton municipality since July 21. Moorabool case numbers are also steady, with 14 active cases on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the municipality since
the start of the pandemic to 39. Despite the falling numbers, Premier Dan Andrews said it was too early to talk about easing restrictions. “I understand and appreciate fully that everybody wants that clear sense of what the next steps will be, but they need to be announcements that can be relied upon,” he said. “They need to be announcements that are based in the best of health advice, in data, in science, in the evidence … what we can be certain of right now, these case numbers

are too high for us to open up, and they are still too high for us to put forward a definitive plan. Mr Andrews said the daily case numbers would need to fall much further before a
definitive plan to re-open the state could be reached. “At 100, 94, at 114, whatever the number, we simply could not open up. Those numbers would explode, we would finish up perhaps in an even worse situation than we have been in recent months,” Mr Andrews said. “We cannot fritter away all that good work and sacrifice. “The strategy … is working and it is making it much more likely that we can get to that place, but it is still a bit too early for us to be able to map out an absolutely definitive plan.”

Garden shines bright in the gloom The pandemic has put limits on many activities, but the Melton Botanic Garden is continuing to be a bright spot for many residents. The store that helps fund the garden’s maintenance has been shut for much of the year because of coronavirus restrictions, but a dedicated team of volunteers is still able to conduct essential work on the vibrant attraction. Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden president John Bentley said the garden had remained in good condition. “We have had to reduce activities, and also

stop new volunteers commencing, which was a bit sad,” Mr Bentley said. “But we’ve had some extra donations, and we’re still able to maintain the garden and do clean-ups for public safety. “It’s been flowering really well throughout the whole period, because we have some that look great during autumn, and then we have some spectacular areas that flower through spring, which is coming up.” Mr Bentley said with so little services available in the current lockdown, many people have been discovering the garden for the first
time. “Since COVID we’ve actually seen a huge increase in the number of people using the botanic garden, and many for the first time. “Whether it’s walking, cycling, taking their kids for nature play activities, enjoying the lake, and a lot of younger people we’ve noticed. “We get great feedback about the garden and how great it’s looking, so there’s a lot of pride in the community about this wonderful asset we have.”
Community satisfaction with Melton council remains high, according to an annual survey of residents. The results of the 2020 Household Satisfaction survey were presented to council at a recent meeting, with 804 households randomly surveyed earlier this year on 35 measures of council performance and facilities. Overall satisfaction in council performance increased by 0.8 per cent to 6.93 (out of a possible 10), despite small drops in satisfaction on waste and recycling (8.37), community services (7.66), and recreation and culture (7.62). Council general manager of community services Maurie Heaney said: “Overall this survey was very positive, as it has been for some time. “We have been pretty steady with our results, which is a good result for our council. It shows we have listened to the community, albeit not face-to-face this year.” Perception of safety at night declined this year to 5.68 (down from 6.18 last year) following two years of improvement. About 30 per cent of respondents felt unsafe in public areas at night. This result remains lower than the 2019 average for metropolitan Melbourne (6.84) and the western region councils (6.57). Residents in Kurunjang and Taylors Hill in particular cited safety as a significant issue. Satisfaction in local business growth had a significant jump this year, improving by 4.9 per cent to 7.21. Cleaning, communication, and parks and gardens also improved in community satisfaction in this survey. Ewen McRae

A 10-part webinar series focusing on personal and professional development opportunities for young women will soon be available publicly. National feminist organisation, YWCA Australia, will launch the series titled Reflect. Grow. Thrive in the week leading up to International Day of the Girl (October 11). The series features guest speakers including Nayuka Gorrie, Carly Findlay, Manal Younus, Amy Thunig, Elizabeth Wright, Rae Cooper, Lucille Cutting and Nkechi Anele. YWCA Australia’s young women’s development manager, Sarah Hill, said the series was a great opportunity for young women who were looking for self-development, connection with like-minded peers, and engagement with
a range of intersectional feminist issues. “The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted young women – they’re a group that’s been most likely to lose their employment, to have their education disrupted, to have to withdraw from already low superannuation accounts to make ends meet, and to experience poor mental health as a result of physical distancing,” Ms Hill said. “There has never been a more necessary time to focus on supporting young women’s development.” Beginning on October 5, the 10-part webinar series is free to access for all YWCA members or $2.50 per session for non-members.
A 19-year-old Kurunjang man has been charged with a number of offences following an aggravated burglary in Deer Park. Police have been told the victim, a 63-year-old woman, was talking to a relative on the phone when she heard the sound of smashing glass coming from her kitchen. When she went to investigate she was confronted by two men, one of them picked up a kitchen knife and allegedly threatened her. The person on the phone heard what was happening and called police who arrived while the two men were at the scene. A Kurunjang man and a 22-year-old Derrimut man have been charged with aggravated burglary, two counts of armed robbery, criminal damage and assault with a weapon.

Avenue concern grows
Council pushes back on towers
By Ewen McRae Concern over the effects of increased truck movements on the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour continue to grow. Maddingley Brown Coal is awaiting a decision on its proposal to store and process contaminated spoil from the Westgate Tunnel Project, which would result in 240 trucks a day transporting the soil to Bacchus Marsh – along the Avenue. Moorabool mayor David Edwards said community and council concerns about the truck route and the affects on the avenue had not been allayed.

“Moorabool Shire Council remains concerned about the impact of increased truck traffic on the historically significant Avenue of Honour at Bacchus Marsh arising from the existing operations and proposal to accept West Gate Tunnel spoil at Maddingley Brown Coal,” Cr Edwards said. “These impacts are likely to be felt not only on roads managed by Moorabool Shire Council but also other neighbouring councils in the regional network that are en route to the site.” Cr Edwards said the increased truck movements would likely lead to more maintenance works on affected roads if the MBC proposal was to win the tender. “Without proper upgrades and management of these roads, significant damage will be incurred and the potential danger on our road network will be increased. maintaining the Avenue of Honour, ensuring its long-term survival as a cultural landmark and that it remains for future generations to enjoy.” Planning Minister Richard Wynne is currently considering proposals from landfills to process the West Gate Tunnel Project spoil.
Moorabool council has launched a campaign to try and alter plans for a major transmission line project through the shire. Plans are under way for 190-kilometres of transmissions lines – made up of hundreds of 80-metre tall towers – to transfer power from wind farms in the state’s west to Melbourne. Council’s ‘Green & Unseen’ campaign is pressuring project operator AusNet to put the transmission lines underground instead. Moorabool mayor David Edwards said it was the most logical alternative. “We’re proud to produce renewable energy through our wind farms to power more than 300,000 homes but putting the powerlines overhead is not green and is actually dangerous to Moorabool residents,” he said. “There is extreme fire risk to many areas along the proposed transmission lines route. If a fire was to break out, the transmission lines could inhibit firefighting efforts. If a tower was to fall, people in our towns could be trapped. “The only sustainable, long-term solution – one that council and our community are advocating for – is to put these powerlines underground. Truly green would mean unseen.” Council also recently made a submission about the project to federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley. A video for the campaign is available on council’s YouTube page. Fears soil trucks will clog roads By Ewen McRae Melton and Brimbank councils say congestion on major western roads will skyrocket if a proposal to bring contaminated soil to Ravenhall is approved. The two councils have joined forces to voice their opposition to a proposal by Cleanaway – which operates the Ravenhall landfill – to accept contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project. If successful, the project would create 460 additional truck movements per day along the route which would cover parts

of the Western Freeway, West Gate Freeway and Christies Road, and would add to existing congestion around Western Ring Road and Deer Park Bypass exits. Melton mayor Lara Carli voiced her concerns for local commuters in the west who would feel this burden once COVID-19 restrictions lift.
“Residents, workers and visitors who travel along any part of this route could expect to feel the impact of 460 more truck movements every single day for at least 16 to 18 months,” Cr Carli said. “In addition, even more truck movements will be required to relocate any class A and B soil which cannot be permanently held at the site. “The west is already congested, we already urgently need substantial road upgrades, and many of our residents have no choice but to use this same route to access employment. We reject any further disadvantage to our
communities.” Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou urged residents to consider how the proposal could impact their daily commute. “Hundreds of additional trucks, once people return to work, will considerably slow down your commute, the school drop-off, weekend activities, and more,” Cr Papafotiou said. “Please let the Victorian government and Transurban know that you oppose contaminated soil being dumped in our area, and that you oppose sending hundreds more trucks along an already congested route.”
Swooping season begins swooping birds account for less than 10 per cent of the population. “Being swooped by a territorial bird is no fun, but this is just normal bird behaviour. The best way to avoid being swooped is to avoid the area altogether, though this isn’t always possible. “If you do end up in an area where there is a swooping bird, try to protect your head and eyes and move quickly through the area without running.” Magpies and other native birds are protected in Victoria under the Wildlife Act 1975. Under the act, it is an offence to kill, take, control or harm wildlife in Victoria. Penalties apply to those found in breach. The department said residents can help map swooping hotspots, or find out where swooping is more likely to happen at wildlife.vic.gov.au/ managing-wildlife/swooping-birds.

As spring approaches, locals are being warned to stay aware of swooping birds when out for a walk or run. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has issued a warning that native birds swoop humans (and their dogs) to defend their young for the six to eight weeks between when they hatch and when they leave the nest. DELWP has received reports of birds such as magpies and masked lapwings swooping at locations around Melbourne, mainly in areas of high vegetation or along prominent waterways. DELWP senior wildlife management officer Rebecca Dixon said it was natural for birds to swoop throughout spring and locals should be aware. “Swooping occurs every year during breeding season and is largely a defensive manoeuvre,” Ms Dixon said. “For some species, including magpies, this is carried out primarily by males;

New deal to transform the west By Ewen McRae Melton council is calling on the state and federal governments to endorse a detailed, long-term investment plan that is set to improve liveability and boost jobs in the region. Launched last week by former Victorian premiers Steve Bracks and John Brumby, and current Senator Scott Ryan, the North and West Melbourne City Deal Plan 2020-2040 is a 20-year proposal of projects and investment for the region. Among the 66 transformative projects detailed in the plan are the new
Melton Hospital, electrification of the Melton train line, Western Highway upgrade, Outer Metropolitan Ring Road and the Western Intermodal Freight Precinct. The plan will now be submitted to the federal and state governments for endorsement. Melton mayor Lara Carli said council was excited to be part of a strong and cohesive plan for the region’s future. “This city deal provides strong evidence that major transformational projects such as the Melton Hospital and the Western Intermodal Freight Precinct (WIFP) are greatly needed
and will add substantial value to the region,” Cr Carli said. “These projects will create a significant and diverse pipeline of jobs and we welcome plans for their delivery. In particular, the WIFP has the opportunity to be a centre of excellence at a national level for freight and logistics, while the Melton Hospital will be a catalyst for additional health services. “With the City of Melton’s population set to triple to half a million residents in the next 30 years, and in the face of a post-COVID-19 economic crisis, we endorse the city deal as a means to generate investment that will have
regional, state and national significance. “I’m pleased the city deal recognises the City of Melton as an important area and outlines transformative projects that are key priorities for our residents. “Importantly, this plan is set to improve liveability in the region, kick-start economic recovery, and create 300,000 local jobs in the north and west over the next two decades.” A number of local councils in the region helped develop the plan, along with La Trobe and Victoria universities and a number of western economic development bodies.
United proud of season construction on their new Tarneit stadium continues. Despite this, and the challenges faced by pausing the season and then resuming in a hub interstate to complete the season, Rudan said his side had showed they could be a force in coming seasons. “There’s a lot of bright signs as far as I’m concerned for the future of this football club,” he said. “Our goal is to improve in all areas from top to bottom. “Things take time, and I know we’re not the only club to have gone this far in their first season, but it’s been a hell of a ride to make the last four and it speaks a lot for the effort that everyone has put in.” Ewen McRae Western United coach Mark Rudan earlier in the season. Western United finished their inaugural A-League season with a semi-final defeat last week, but say their best is yet to come. United fell to cross-town rivals Melbourne City 2-0 on August 26, despite dominating possession for large parts of the game and looking the better team for much of the match. Head coach Mark Rudan said while it was a disappointing way to exit the season, he was proud of his team’s performance in a memorable season. “I told the players after the game just how proud I was of each and every one of them,” Rudan said. “I think it’s been a terrific season but sometimes in life and sport it doesn’t go your way [and] I thought we were the better team tonight but you’ve got to take your moments and take your opportunities.” United’s first season saw them play as a bit of a nomad, splitting most of their home games between Geelong and Ballarat while

Call for lockdown buddy system By Goya Dmytryshchak
Hobsons Bay Psychology’s Michelle Gopold. (Damjan Janevski) 213387_01
A family-owned-and-operated psychology clinic in the west inundated with clients says Victorians could benefit from New Zealand’s buddy system during lockdown. Hobsons Bay Psychology owner and clinical psychologist, Michelle Gopold, says the practise doesn’t have enough psychologists for the current number of referrals. She said although the lockdown was needed, it had resulted in people struggling more with their mental health. “With the current lockdown and the restrictions, the social supports and other
coping mechanisms that involve getting out of the house are taken away,” Ms Gopold said. She said New Zealand’s buddy system, which had allowed a person living alone to visit one other residence during its lockdown, was a strategy the state government should look at. “I actually think that would be a fantastic idea – to allow one person to see another person – because we know that one of the biggest protective factors in mental health is that social connection and that social support,” Ms Gopold said. “Often there’s more of a risk of an increase in suicide when someone’s feeling that they don’t have anyone, that there is no one out there, that
they don’t have that connection and they don’t have that face-to-face contact. “From a mental health point of view, I think that would be a very healthy strategy because it helps mitigate that risk a little bit if you are able to have one person over. “There is a mental health crisis at the moment. Our clinic is inundated with referrals and we just cannot find psychologists to help meet the demand. “That’s not just with our clinic. I know it’s Melbourne-wide at the moment, that people are really struggling.” For help or information contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, or beyondblue on 1300 224 636.

Masks can take a mental toll As the second wave of coronavirus sweeps across Victoria and mandatory mask use is enforced across the state, a Victoria University psychology expert is warning of the challenges these changes can trigger. Melbourne and Mitchell Shire residents have lived with compulsory face covering laws since July 22, while the rest of the state has now been ordered to follow suit as part of desperate measures to slow the spread of the deadly pandemic. VU clinical psychologist Dr Glen Hosking said while the laws are well intentioned they can also present people with some unexpected psychological hurdles. “This pandemic continues to impact every area of our lives; physically, socially, economically and psychologically, so it’s OK to take some time to adjust while complying with this new stage – that is a completely normal response,” he said. Dr Hosking said wearing masks during social exchanges can be challenging for people, given how much we use our face to convey emotions and to reciprocate a smile, so people now need to find new ways to interact and respond. “Maybe we need to perfect a friendly nod or a wave, just a small gesture to acknowledge each other,” he said. “I also think we have to remember that anyone with a hearing or vision disability will find wearing a mask especially difficult; being mindful of this is beneficial for the whole community.” Dr Hosking noted that some children might be feeling unnerved by seeing adults wear masks, so it is helpful to encourage candid conversations about how children are coping. One way of helping to adjust to challenging changes, according to Dr Hosking, is to keep up or adopt healthy routines such as regular exercise. “Due to the new rules, there might a tendency to stop exercising, but I’d encourage everyone to keep up your fitness routines,” he said. “There is scientific proof that regular physical activity has a positive impact on our mental wellbeing, so in times like this, it’s even more important that we keep moving.”
It’s up to all of us to keep each other safe. You must continue to practise good hygiene, physical distancing, and if you’re even slightly unwell, get tested and stay at home. Don’t risk it. The sooner we all do it, the sooner we’ll get through it. Have the App Visit australia.gov.au

The remodelling of the program will help further align and simplify the talent pathway calendar, to provide boys’ and girls’ programs with the same opportunities for elite development while also increasing their connection to community football, the AFL said. The Victorian Football League and the NAB League competitions have had a shake-up ahead of the 2021 season. With limited football in 2020 due to the coronavirus, the AFL has reviewed the AFL talent pathways programs of the VFL and other state league competitions. The age level of the NAB League girls and boys competitions will change from next year, along with the AFL/AFLW junior national championships. The under-18 age group will become an
competition. The draft age will remain at 18 for both AFL and AFLW competitions. The VFL is set to expand with the North East Australian Football League to be amalgamated into the VFL competition. The competition will have a mixture of AFL club reserves sides, stand-alone second tier sides, AFL clubs aligned with second-tier sides and AFL listed players spread among multiple second-tier clubs. Williamstown and Werribee are among the VFL clubs that will be affected by the changes. Williamstown chief executive Jason Reddick
welcomed the changes. “The stand-alone and aligned VFL clubs have worked closely with the AFL for many months to retain the VFL as the second-tier football competition, and ensure our club’s place in it. “I can assure all Seagull fans that Williamstown Football Club is well placed to continue as a stand-alone VFL club in season 2021.” The changes in both the VFL and NAB League are expected to see a greater alignment between those two competitions. The model for the VFLW competition is still under review.
Helping women in sport studies in sport at VU, along with the opportunity to receive mentoring from a VU Alumni sport community leader. The first two recipients of the Victoria University Women in Sport Scholarship are Laura Oakley and Zoe Pease. Laura is studying a bachelor of outdoor education and environmental science. After a traumatic experience resulting in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Laura continues to focus on progressing in her sport of white water rafting and kayaking. Zoe also studies a bachelor of outdoor education and environmental science and plans to take on further studies to qualify as a secondary school teacher in sports and outdoor education, with the focus of increasing the confidence of students she teaches.
Victoria University is offering women further opportunities to get involved in sport. With the support of Dr Susan Alberti, the university last week announced the inaugural Victoria University Women in Sport Scholarship. The scholarship is a legacy to the fundraising Dr Alberti provides to support creating ‘no boundaries’ for women in sport. “Everyone knows I’m passionate about sport, especially when it is used as a vehicle to improve women’s health, provide leadership opportunities and create pathways to increase participation on the field, and in the boardrooms,” Dr Alberti said. “I am delighted to show my support by funding these scholarships and wish the inaugural recipients my congratulations.” Each year, two women will receive a Victoria University Women in Sport Scholarship to assist their undergraduate or postgraduate

Jovic steps up for Collingwood By Tara Murray Collingwood Magpies midcourter Molly Jovic is taking every chance thrown at her as she steps onto the court in the Suncorp Super Netball competition. From being a temporary injury replacement to a full squad member and then best on court in just her third game, Jovic has looked right at home among the best players in the world. For the 24-year-old, just being part of the Magpies team this season was a shock, after deciding to step back from high-level netball last year.
‘‘
amazing to even get the opportunity to step onto the court - Molly Jovic
’’
“I played two years with Vic Fury and last year I was probably at that point. I had got my degree and got a job and I was working full-time and trying to do ANL [Australian Netball League] as well,” she said. “It’s all after hours and I found it really challenging giving my time to work and also netball. I decided to have a year off to see if I miss it and see if I want to give it another go. “I ended up having the first few months of pre-season off and then an injury came up with the Tassie Magpies ANL side and I got a phone call asking if I’d like to help out with them … and I thought why not. “It’s a bit of a shock that I’m here now.” For the City West Falcons gun, the decision proved to be the right one with the Collingwood Magpies, who are aligned with the Tassie Magpies, seeing what Jovic could do on court. It led to her being signed as an injury replacement for Australian player Kelsey Browne. Jovic thought she would just be with the side until Browne was right to play, but a knee

injury to cross-code star Ash Brazill, resulted in her being signed for the rest of the season. “I was just stoked that I was going to have an opportunity to train with the likes of Kesley Browne, Madi Browne and Ash Brazill. Obviously it was devastating that Braz got injured as well. “Sometimes I was finding myself thinking I’m actually training with these amazing athletes, it’s incredible now that I’m getting to play alongside them as well.” With COVID-19 shutting down training just before the start of the season, Jovic said she was determined to do whatever it took to keep playing. “We would go from training really intense with your teammates to taking home some equipment from the Holden Centre and just trying to keep ticking over, until we heard something about a potential season,” she said.
“There was definitely some doubt there would even be a season. When the talk started coming about hubs, I was absolutely going to be on board for that as it’s potentially my only opportunity to play at this level. “If that’s what I have to do to get a go, I’ll move my life to Queensland.” Having already stepped down to part-time work when she joined Collingwood, Jovic is now having a career break so she can follow her dream of playing netball. Jovic said while there had been some challenges living in the hub, it also had its benefits. “It has been really good for us as a team, we’ve gotten to know people a lot faster than you normally would in a normal training environment.” Among those in the hub, is Collingwood assistant coach Nicole Richardson.
Richardson has coached Jovic for many years, firstly at Altona representative netball and then at the City West Falcons. Jovic said it was “pretty cool” to have someone involved in the team who she’s known nearly her whole life. The condensed season has changed how clubs use their players and bench, resulting in younger and newer players being given more opportunities than before. Jovic has played in every match so far, as was named best on court in her third match. She said that knowing the calibre of her teammates, she wasn’t expecting to get the opportunities she has. “I was definitely in shock [when she made her debut]. I think [coach] Rob [Wright] called me on as a rolling sub within the first quarter. “I thought it would be a bit later in the game than in the first quarter, so it was a bit of a surreal moment. “It was amazing to even get the opportunity to step onto the court at all.” Jovic has split her time playing the three midcourt positions, which has taken her out of her comfort zone. At the Falcons, she is predominantly a centre. At ANL, she normally plays centre or wing attack. She’s played on a number of international level players, including gun New Zealander Laura Langman. Jovic admits there are times where she’s had to take a breath and take in what is happening around her. For the Magpies, making finals is the aim. “We want to make finals and give it a good shot, just because it’s going to be a year to remember for everyone. We want to head out on top,” Jovic said. While it’s been a crazy ride to get a spot in the world’s best competition, Jovic is keen to stay in it for more than one year. “Absolutely, if an opportunity arises in the future, I would love to do that.”

MOTOR
Trailhawk aims for all points By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE
Jeep has book-ended its petrol-powered range of Compass small sports utility vehicles for 2020 with new entry-level Night Eagle front-wheel drive and S-Limited all-wheel drive variants. The second-generation Compass is offered with six variants and four specification levels – Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk – with the choice of diesel or petrol engines and six-speed manual or six or nine-speed automatic transmissions. With a move upmarket, gone are the Sport and Longitude, with the Night Eagle front-wheel drive landing with a price of $36,950, plus on-road costs, while the S-Limited AWD, at $45,950, slots into the Compass world between the Limited and the turbodiesel top model, the Trailhawk ($49,450). In keeping with the substantial increase in prices, Jeep has upgraded safety and equipment across the range. I was given a taste of the top-dog Trailhawk for a stint on and off road.
Jeep Compass Night Eagle 2.4 petrol 6sp auto FWD $36,950 Jeep Compass Limited 2.4 petrol 9sp auto AWD $42,950 Jeep Compass S-Limited 2.4 petrol 9sp auto AWD $45,950 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 2.0 turbodiesel 9sp auto 4x4 $49,450 Premium paint $645 Black painted roof $545 Dual-pane sunroof $1950
Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Jeep dealer for drive-away prices.

Engines / transmissions
The Trailhawk includes leather-appointed seats with power adjustment for driver, plus memory and adjustable lumbar support for driver and front passenger. The trapezoidal centre stack bezel is a characteristic Jeep design. The instrument cluster features a 7-inch LED information display that the driver can configure. The centre console brings together gear-shift selector, SelecTerrain controls, electronic parking brake, engine stop / start switch, climate and audio control knobs, and easily-reached media charging and connectivity ports.
The diesel motor in Compass is the 2.0-litre MultiJet II with stop / start technology, paired with the nine-speed automatic gearbox. It offers 125kW at 4000 rpm and peak torque of 350 Nm at a low 1750 rpm in Trailhawk only.

The turbodiesel Trailhawk was hesitant in spooling up for overtaking slow moving traffic, not the ‘prompt response’ promised by the maker. In comparison with modern diesel motors this oldish unit was noisy. Fuel consumption failed to match the maker’s claim of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle. Ours used 9.4 litres in the city and 6.6 litres per hundred on the open road. In some semi-serious off-roading, in Jeep Selec-Terrain ‘Rock’ setting, the test Trailhawk took advantage of its exceptional suspension rigidity of up to 170mm of articulation in conditions that would have stopped many of its SUV rivals in their tracks.

Jeep has stuck to the styling of the 2018 Trailhawk with the new Compass, carrying many of the design cues of its premium cousin, for example the seven-slot radiator grille and trapezoidal wheel arches. However, the former has been given a fresh look by each individual chrome slot being set in a gloss black background, while LED signature headlamp bezels feature a black outline. A sporty roofline and bold fender flares make for a muscular profile, while all-round glass and the availability of a gloss black roof ($545) add a touch of uniqueness, while dual-glass sunroof ($1950) delivers the open-air hallmark Jeep feeling to the cabin.
