Adopt a puppet

Footscray’s much-loved puppet theatre company Snuf Puppets is giving people the chance to “adopt” their very own puppet. he inaugural ‘Snuf Lovers’ campaign is aiming to raise $15,000 to help support the company, which has been hard hit during the COVID-19 lockdown. he campaign will culminate in the construction of an eight-metre tall interactive Heart puppet. Snuf Puppets artistic director Andy Freer (pictured) said the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of planned tours to Portugal, Germany, Lithuania, Taiwan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “So here we are now, excited to be launching our irst ever fundraising campaign.” People who donate $2 or more become ‘Snuf Bufs’, helping to unlock new Snuf videos for the world to see. Donations of more than $100 earn “Snuf Nut” status and donors can send a personal message to be inscribed on the giant Heart. “Snuf Gods” who donate $1000 will receive a gold-framed portrait of their adopted puppet and their name hand-stitched inside the puppet. he irst $15,000 raised will be matched by Creative Partnerships Australia. Aged care toll mounts By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Almost a dozen people have died and more than 100 COVID-19 cases have been recorded as infections spread through inner-west aged care homes. Seven people have died at the Doutta Galla Yarraville Village aged care facility, where almost 60 residents and staf have tested positive for coronavirus. A further four people have died and at least 26 residents and 22 staf have also tested positive

at Doutta Galla’s Footscray Aged Care Home, while an Altona North nursing home has been taken over by a state government health service ater being linked to 29 COVID-19 cases. he virus outbreak at Doutta Galla Yarraville Village that began with a staf member testing positive on July 31 has now spread to 33 residents and 25 staf. Two residents have died at the facility and a further ive have died ater being transferred to hospitals. Doutta Galla Aged Services chief executive Vanda Iaconese said 23 COVID-19 positive residents remain at the home, with the

remainder of residents transferred to hospitals over recent days. “COVID-19 has brought unprecedented disruption and diiculty for our residents, families and staf. he management of our facility is, however, under control to the best possible extent,” she said. “Our emergency response plan was immediately activated, and we have been working collaboratively with state and federal aged care authorities and health services, Western Health and AUSMAT [the Australian Medical Assessment Team].” Florence Aged Care Facility in Altona North

has 20 residents and nine staf infected, the Department of Health and Human Services said on Monday. Western Health has been appointed to take over. Eighteen cases have been linked to Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Braybrook and 11 to the Allied Pinnacle commercial baking supplier in Altona North. A worker from Altona Coles has also tested positive. Maribyrnong has now recorded 497 positive COVID-19 cases, with 230 still active. Hobsons Bay has recorded 343 cases including 172 active.
