Footscray’s much-loved puppet theatre company Snuf Puppets is giving people the chance to “adopt” their very own puppet. he inaugural ‘Snuf Lovers’ campaign is aiming to raise $15,000 to help support the company, which has been hard hit during the COVID-19 lockdown. he campaign will culminate in the construction of an eight-metre tall interactive Heart puppet. Snuf Puppets artistic director Andy Freer (pictured) said the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of planned tours to Portugal, Germany, Lithuania, Taiwan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “So here we are now, excited to be launching our irst ever fundraising campaign.” People who donate $2 or more become ‘Snuf Bufs’, helping to unlock new Snuf videos for the world to see. Aged care toll mounts By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Almost a dozen people have died and more than 100 COVID-19 cases have been recorded as infections spread through inner-west aged care homes. Seven people have died at the Doutta Galla Yarraville Village aged care facility, where almost 60 residents and staf have tested positive for coronavirus. A further four people have died and at least 26 residents and 22 staf have also tested positive
at Doutta Galla’s Footscray Aged Care Home, while an Altona North nursing home has been taken over by a state government health service ater being linked to 29 COVID-19 cases. he virus outbreak at Doutta Galla Yarraville Village that began with a staf member testing positive on July 31 has now spread to 33 residents and 25 staf. Two residents have died at the facility and a further ive have died ater being transferred to hospitals. Doutta Galla Aged Services chief executive Vanda Iaconese said 23 COVID-19 positive residents remain at the home, with the
remainder of residents transferred to hospitals over recent days. “COVID-19 has brought unprecedented disruption and diiculty for our residents, families and staf. he management of our facility is, however, under control to the best possible extent,” she said. “Our emergency response plan was immediately activated, and we have been working collaboratively with state and federal aged care authorities and health services, Western Health and AUSMAT [the Australian Medical Assessment Team].” Florence Aged Care Facility in Altona North
has 20 residents and nine staf infected, the Department of Health and Human Services said on Monday. Western Health has been appointed to take over. Eighteen cases have been linked to Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Braybrook and 11 to the Allied Pinnacle commercial baking supplier in Altona North. A worker from Altona Coles has also tested positive. Maribyrnong has now recorded 497 positive COVID-19 cases, with 230 still active. Hobsons Bay has recorded 343 cases including 172 active.

Submissions object to rates rise Hobsons Bay council has received 66 submissions in response to this year’s drat budget, with more than two-thirds objecting to proposed rates increases. Under the drat 2020-21 budget, the council proposes to increase rates by 3.89 per cent for commercial properties and 8.78 per cent for industrial properties. Residential rates will decrease by an average of 0.48 per cent based on January revaluations, while petrochemical rates will increase by 1.14 per cent. Hobsons Bay’s four main trader associations, representing more than 1000 small businesses, have united in an unprecedented move to
oppose the proposed commercial and industrial increases. Newport Traders Association, Williamstown Chamber of Commerce, Altona Village Traders Association and Laverton Traders Association have lodged a joint objection. Speaking on behalf of the four groups, Ilch Mickovski addressed councillors at last week’s council meeting to hear budget submissions. “For the irst time in our history, we stand united as one in representing small business in Hobsons Bay,” he said. “Small businesses have been challenged like they’ve never been challenged before. COVID-19 has deinitely made a huge impact on their capacity to trade,
their livelihood and wellbeing. We completely understand that government restrictions are required in order to protect everyone but unfortunately this comes at a cost to small businesses. “Currently, small businesses are working harder than ever to be able to trade and navigating between landlord/bank repayments and further stage 4 restrictions compliance, with the risk and fear of an outbreak being linked to their business.” he inal budget is expected to be adopted on Tuesday, August 25.

Lead petitioner Andrea Dunkin said residents opposed the changes. “By placing the cars on the let (west) side of the street, it means that there’s not going to be enough parking spaces and we will have to place our bins next to these parked cars,” she said. “It also means our elderly residents and children on the right (east) side of Acacia Avenue would have to cross the road to put the bins out which would be dangerous.

One-way ‘the wrong way’ Seaholme residents are protesting council plans to make their streets one-way, saying claims that their streets are too narrow for two-way traic are unjustiied. A petition signed by 93 residents is calling on Hobsons Bay council to abandon its proposal to make Acacia Avenue and Central Avenue one-way. he changes are part of the council’s revised plans “to address traic and parking concerns around Seaholme station”. he council also plans to implement two-hour parking on the northern side of Central Avenue weekdays from 9am-5pm and mark out 46 on-street parking spaces. It has dropped plans to make Waratah Street and Wattle Grove one-way but says Acacia and Central avenues must become one-way “because the Victorian Road Safety Regulations require three metres of clear space for a car to safely use a road”. “he streets in this section of Seaholme do not currently meet these requirements and therefore do not safely accommodate two-way travel for cars and parking on both sides of the street,” council documents state. “Council appreciates that the one-way traic will increase local travel times by a few minutes and will require residents on the right-hand (east) side of Acacia Avenue to place their bins on the other side of the road for collection.” Acacia Avenue resident of 25 years, David Appleby said he had measured the width of surrounding streets. He said, Acacia Avenue is 7050 millimetres (7.05 metres) wide, Seaholme Avenue is 7050 millimetres, Wattle Grove is 7000 millimetres, Waratah Street is 7070 millimetres and Parkside Crescent is 7030 millimetres. “I don’t know why they’re singling out us to be a one-way street,” Mr Appleby said. “hey want to funnel all of the traic … one-way into Acacia Avenue and back onto Civic Parade. It just doesn’t make sense.”

“he Central Avenue residents are also very distraught and strongly oppose the proposal due to the increase in traic, and some commented that they can’t even reverse their boats out at the moment, let alone if they had cars parked in front of them.” As reported by Star Weekly in March, some commuters were angered the changes meant no all-day parking north of the station and could deter people from catching the train.
A Newport resident and former oil rig worker has questioned Port of Melbourne’s claims it has been unable to identify the source of noise pollution troubling residents. Ray Lindner said although he lived two blocks from the Strand, noise from machinery at the wharf was heard in his house every night. Star Weekly last month reported Williamstown residents had lodged numerous complaints over “debilitating, painful and distressing” noise that was making their lives unbearable. A Port of Melbourne spokeswoman said it was working with the relevant port operators and the Environment Protection Authority to identify the sources of noise and would expand its investigation. Mr Lindner said it should be easy to identify the source of the noise. “What we hear is some rotating equipment, which could be an engine,” he said. “Much of my working life, I worked on ofshore oil rigs where you have all sorts of equipment running. “You actually know the noise of all machinery, whether it be a generator or a compressor or a large engine running. “hey’ve all got their sounds and you know them all … For them to say they will investigate and try and ind the source of the noise, I thought, what a load of crap. hey will know exactly what it is.” A Port of Melbourne spokeswoman on Friday said there was insuicient data to identify the noise and investigations would be widened. “While there may be individual instances of increased noise that may relate to activity at the port, there are a number of factors that inluence noise levels in and around the port precinct such as the operation of other industries, as well as the level of background traic noise. “Weather conditions… also play a major role in the transmission of noise.” Goya Dmytryshchak

An Altona Meadows man has been charged with a range of offences after his car was shot at by police while he allegedly drove at an oficer in Altona Meadows on Sunday morning. Police allege the 64-year-old ignored a police direction to turn off his vehicle and drove towards police at a service station on Point Cook Road just after 1.20am. A police oficer ired his gun at the vehicle, which then sped away before being intercepted on Harrison Court after a short pursuit. The driver was arrested and charged with dangerous driving and other offences. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Yarraville’s Cruickshank Park’s role as a welcome oasis during coronavirus isolation has been given a fun twist. Lee Smith-Moir, who lives alongside the park, noticed that the shutting down of the playgrounds during the irst round of restrictions in March had created a situation where kids were at a loss when they visited the popular park. “We started putting up rainbows for the kids to ind, from there we started doing other activities. On my fence that faces the park I put up a puzzle wall and optical illusions and things like that.” he latest lockdowns spurred Ms Smith-Moir to go one step further, inspiring a trail of signs featuring philosophical musings and fun facts.
She said she has seen a noticeable change in people’s enjoyment of the park since irst the rainbows and now the signs. “You could see them inding one and running up and onto the next one and getting such a kick out of it,” she said. According to Ms Smith-Moir, the idea is to help meet the need for mental exercise as well as physical. “I would love more people to be doing what we are doing in their community, so I’ve actually put the signs up online for people so they can do it in other parks.” Details: Visit ‘FUN in Cruickshank Park’ on Facebook.

End of an era for Altona By Goya Dmytryshchak It’s the end of an era for the Sarros name in Pier Street with the retirement of Altona pharmacist Tom Sarros. Mr Sarros has sold his business ater 33 years, meaning it will be the irst time since the Second World War that Pier Street is without a Sarros family business. His late father, Ilias, migrated from Greece in 1950 and established a general store in Pier Street with his brothers. In the 1960s, Ilias opened a snack bar further along Pier Street and “boasted they had the second cappuccino machine in Melbourne,” Mr Sarros said. Mr Sarros said he felt a duty to say thank you and farewell to his customers from the former Tom Sarros Pharmacy. “To be aforded or charged with the responsibility and the trust to dispense your medications and advise on medical and other related matters was not only a privilege but an honour,” he said. “It is something that I will cherish and uphold with the utmost of respect today and forever. “My patients were my life and I took my job extremely seriously. he level of trust was huge … for them to actually trust what I would recommend to them, I took that with a huge amount of responsibility.” he Sarros family so formed part of the fabric of Altona that there is a street named in its honour. Mr Sarros said he recalled the words of his late mother, Magdalene, when she returned to Greece ater 30 years. “She said, ‘I’ve waited 30 years to come back to my home but this is no longer my home: my home is Altona’,” Mr Sarros said. “It was very profound because all of my [life], all I’d heard about was the old country. “She said, ‘I love Altona’.”

Lifeguard funding plea Altona Village Traders Association has appealed to Hobsons Bay council to fund two paid lifeguards on Altona beach for three months over summer. President Kim Walsh addressed councillors at last week’s council meeting to hear budget submissions, requesting $45,000 to be allocated in this year’s budget. Last summer, the traders funded two lifeguards with inancial support from Rotary Club of Altona, Lions Club of Altona, Altona Bowling Club, Altona RSL, Altona Community Bank and Altona Sports Club. hey raised $15,000 to employ the pair through Life Saving Victoria, full-time for one month. Altona lifesaving volunteers usually patrol on weekends and public holidays in summer. Mr Walsh told councillors there was a need for lifeguards Monday to Friday. “Hot days, of course, are not conined to Saturdays and Sundays, but sadly the ive weekdays have never ever been patrolled,” he said. Mr Walsh said lifeguards would enable people with a disability to use amenities seven days. Last inancial year, Altona lifesaving volunteers and lifeguards performed 937 preventative actions, 91 irst aid treatments and four rescues, according to Life Saving Victoria. he inal budget is expected to be adopted on August 25. Sale paves way for museum By Benjamin Millar Dreams of Australia’s irst Vietnamese museum being built in the heart of Footscray are a step closer to reality ater Maribyrnong council agreed to the $2 million sale of a carpark to provide the location. he Vietnamese Museum of Australia (VMA), Australia’s irst Vietnamese cultural and heritage centre, is being built to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the irst wave of refugee arrivals. Driven by the Victorian chapter of the Vietnamese Community Australia, the museum is expected to cost $12 million to build. he VMA has been conceived as a site for contemporary cultural events and opportunity to educate the community about the role the Vietnamese community and Vietnamese immigration has played in Australian history. It is expected to include museum and gallery spaces, a reception area, café, community and education facilities and a shrine. he ive-storey project has so far secured funding of $9.45 million from the federal and state governments, with the balance to be obtained via community fundraising and loans. Maribyrnong council last week agreed to sell a 945 square metre parcel of land on Donald Street for $2 million to become the site of the museum. Expressions of Interest were sought for the site in July and the VMA was identiied as the preferred purchaser. A property valuation found the site, which currently contains 26 car spaces, would be valued at $3 million on the open market. But the council decided the $2 million was a reasonable ofer given its decision to preserve the site for community purposes when selling the land. A Maribyrnong council report found

the VMA’s vision for the site responds well to the council’s structure plan and tourism strategy and would “enhance the cultural diversity and richness in Footscray centre”. “he proposal is highly responsive to the
cultural demographics of Footscray,” it stated. Economic beneits include the creation of about 300 jobs during construction and attracting about 30,000 visitors to the area each year. Other beneits include providing
an educational centre for school excursions and maintaining a collection of artefacts and stories of the Vietnamese refugees’ diaspora. he VMA plans for construction to begin by May 2021 and be completed by May 2023.

‘Heart’ of hospital opens By Goya Dmytryshchak he new “heart” of Williamstown Hospital has been completed ater much love from the local community. he $2.5 million Heart of Williamstown project involved redeveloping the main public areas of the hospital to create a central visitor hub. Donors fully funded the upgrade through the Western Health Foundation’s Heart of Williamstown appeal launched four years ago. Unlike most hospitals, Williamstown’s, which opened in 1894, had lacked outdoor spaces for patients and visitors.
he new hub in the ‘heart’ of the hospital includes an expanded visitor and patient lounge area overlooking landscaped courtyards with a covered walkway leading to the hospital cafe. Construction started in July last year, with work undertaken while the hospital was fully functioning and amid the COVID-19 pandemic. he design has retained the building’s heritage features while providing a modern, functional space for the growing hospital. Western Health Foundation director Julia White thanked the local community whose donations made the project possible. “his project is a testament to the power of

good philanthropy,” she said. “It has been fully funded by donations from people who live in and around Williamstown. “We are so grateful to the local community for getting behind us to invest in this project.” he ‘Heart of Williamstown’ campaign was named as such to not only relect the centrality of the new space, but the signiicance of the hospital to the local community.
Western Health Foundation board member Jenny Sadler said the hospital had been built by community support. “As a long-time resident of Williamstown, I understand how important this hospital is to the local community,” she said. “It has been a part of so many people’s lives here for many generations. “his new space continues a legacy of community support for the hospital which was irst opened over 130 years ago through a community appeal.” Due to COVID-19 restricting access to the hospital, an oicial opening will take place when deemed appropriate.
Capturing Footscray Footscray’s many layers and a series of chance encounters during a time of social isolation have been caught on camera as part of the ith annual Picturing Footscray Photography Prize. Ben Dowling’s black and white photograph Paisley Street was selected as the winning photo out of 150 entries, taking home the coveted $3000 irst prize and a $300 voucher from Ernest Studio. Judges Cameron Cope and Megan Evans said that the photograph raised more questions than answers, sparking the imagination and speaking to the cultural juxtapositions of everyday Footscray. Footscray local Jody Haines took out second prize with a self-portrait exploring the efect of isolation and the collapse of opportunities for the local creative community under the lockdown triggered by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Narinda Cook was awarded third prize for her depiction of a group of friends who support the activist Antifa cause. Local student Becky Blechynden took out the student prize with Waiting Welcome, a photo highlighting the quiet streets of Footscray during the restrictions. Ms Evans said one of the main things she noticed in judging this prize was the tendency of the photos to have a strong narrative. “hey all seemed to tell a story, which may or may not be due to the times we are living in,” she said. “As a judge I found myself engaged in the many layers of meaning embedded in the images.” Ms Evans said the winning works were all cleverly crated to provide multiple readings, such as Paisley Street speaking to the current and ongoing issues around race and racism. “he irony of the small poster that could be an image of ‘black face’, but which is actually a face mask, talks of the painful experience of black bodies who are mocked by the act of ‘black face’, which is done with racist overtones,” she said. “his photograph is also sophisticated in its composition, being split down the middle and a clear directional gaze that draws the viewer from the actual gaze of the black woman to the centre of her attention.” Mr Cope said: “Is it blackface or a beauty treatment we see on the window of the salon? Is the mother in the scene pondering that same question while her child ponders the photographer? “It’s a puzzle that sparks the imagination in the spirit of a Matt Stuart or Jesse Marlow and speaks both to the global Black Lives Matter movement and the cultural juxtapositions of everyday, local Footscray.” All 150 photographs entered into the Picturing Footscray Photography Prize can be viewed in the online exhibition until September 11. Yarraville Seddon has pulled of a recruiting coup, signing former AFL player Michael Barlow as its playing coach for next year’s Western Region Football League division 1 season. he Eagles announced that Barlow would not only coach the men’s side, but would also be the club’s director of coaching. Barlow, who played 141 AFL games during his time at Freemantle and then Gold Coast, has been at Werribee in the VFL since 2019 as a playing assistant coach. Eagles president Rick Halliwell said the signing was signiicant for the club. “It was a bit of a process, but we were looking for a high proile coach and we looked pretty hard,” he said. “We couldn’t have asked for someone better. He’ll be coaching the whole club and the junior focus was one of the main reasons that he applied. “He’s the right person and he its everything that we were ater.” Halliwell said the response to Barlow’s appointment had been huge and they were expecting to announce the rest of the coaching panel and some new signings in the next couple of weeks. He said they weren’t expecting to lose any of the existing playing group, which had been a big focus. “It’s been about trying to get some enjoyment and try and build up football,” he said. “Hopefully we can start pre-season early and get football back on the mind.” Barlow replaces Chris Atkins who stood down for personal reasons. Speaking on social media, Barlow said he was excited and honoured to take on the role. “Looking forward to meeting a lot of people over the next few months to get ready for the season. Clever little Squirrls By Goya Dmytryshchak An inner-west business manufacturing undies that hide your valuables has turned its hand to masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Squirrls - pronounced ’squirrels’ - launched its pickpocket-proof travel undies for women in December. Now the brand has adapted to make microibre polyester masks - and despite travel bans, its briefs have taken of in the US. It’s the brainchild of Lynda Ford, who launched the global phenomenon from her Yarraville home using locally-sourced materials and manufacturers. he underwear is designed to store items
such as a passport and credit card in a secret pocket with no bulge. “We launched on December 1, 2019, and we were going really, really well making lots of sales and local women were supporting us really well,“ Ms Ford said. “hen COVID happened in mid-March, and so there weren’t a lot of women travelling, obviously, ater that.“ Ms Ford said she used the time to redesign the undies and consider the other safety needs of women. “We could see right back then that women around the world were wearing face masks and that would be something, probably, that we would need down the track,“ she said.
Ms Ford said while the masks were in high demand from men and women locally, the undies were currently very popular in the US with numerous orders coming in. Mask orders are now coming in from New South Wales and Queensland. Ms Ford personally delivers masks locally within the allowed distance under stage 4 restrictions. “We go around within ive kilometres of Yarraville dropping of these little parcels taking the dogs for a walk, so it’s actually been quite good,“ she said. “I can wear [the mask] when I’m walking for an hour, which I couldn’t do even for 10 or 15 minutes with those cloth masks.“ Details: squirrl.com.au

Rivers to be cleaned up A clean-up program of waterways, including the Werribee and Maribyrnong rivers, has been announced as part of eforts to keep people working during the coronavirus pandemic. Minister for Water Lisa Neville recently announced more than 110 people will take on roles cleaning and protecting Melbourne’s suburban waterways, through the state government’s $500 million Working for Victoria fund. he fund creates employment for people who have lost their jobs due to the impacts of coronavirus, while delivering community services. Under the program, more than 90 employees will remove rubbish, undertake invasive weed management and improve vegetation along the Yarra, Maribyrnong and Werribee rivers, as well as throughout the Dandenong and Bayside regions. he improvement works will be delivered in collaboration with the Yarra River Keeper Association, along with community groups and councils along urban waterways. A recent series of litter clean-up events along the Yarra and Maribyrnong rivers cleared almost 40 tonnes of rubbish from both rivers. “Local rivers and creeks have become even more valuable in recent months, with people getting out of the house to exercise and get some fresh air – this will make them cleaner and healthier,” Ms Neville said, “It’s great to see Working for Victoria making a big contribution to improving our waterways, while also keeping people in work through the coronavirus pandemic.” he Working for Victoria program has placed almost 7000 workers in employment, since its launch in April. Police have released footage of a man they wish to speak to in connection to an aggravated carjacking in Wyndham Vale earlier this year. Altona North Embona Taskforce detectives have been told a delivery van stopped on Ferry Close to make a delivery about 9am on Tuesday, June 30. he Cheetham Wetlands covers 420 hectares of artiicial and natural lagoons, on the site of an old saltworks. Located across the municipalities of Wyndham and Hobsons Bay, the wetlands are part of the Point Cook Coastal Park. he site is protected under the Ramsar Convention and supports many species of birds which migrate to the southern hemisphere every year, including the red-necked stint, fairy tern, sharp-tailed sandpiper, double-banded plover and yellow sedge-skipper. An observation tower for bird watching, which is named Migration and Aspirations, provides 360 degree views of the wetlands. he tower, which also provides views of Melbourne’s CBD, is located 1.5 kilometres from the wetlands’ gate entry and is reachable

Celebrating women in council It’s been 100 years since Mary Rogers was elected to Richmond City Council, cementing her place in history as Victoria’s irst female councillor. Today, of the state’s 79 local councils, 35 have more than 40 per cent female councillors and there are 36 female mayors. Star Weekly talks to some of the women shaping the communities in the north and west. Cr Carly Moore

Carly Moore hopes she is teaching girls across Hume that anything is possible. he irst-term councillor is Hume’s current mayor and the irst Hume councillor to be voted into the top job two years in a row. It’s an achievement Cr Moore is understandably very proud of. “It is a big achievement … I think it is a good endorsement from my fellow councillors that I am doing a good job,” she said. Cr Moore was irst elected to Hume council in October 2016. She ran for council on the advice of her sister, Casey Nunn, a former Hume mayor. “My sister … served for four years before me. She encouraged me to run and took me to a candidate information session,” Cr Moore said. “It was at that information session that I became serious about running for council. I can clearly remember looking around the room … really thinking about whether these other candidates could better represent me and my family.” Cr Moore said the 2016 council elections also came at a time when she was ready for a career change. Having worked as an accountant in inancial services in the city for a number of years before becoming self-employed, Cr Moore said she had reached a point where she was looking for something new. hese days, she continues to work part-time while juggling the role of mayor and mum to four school-aged children, who for the most part love that their mum is mayor. “It’s been an amazing experience,” Cr Moore said, “I genuinely love it.” While Cr Moore said she has many “fond memories” from the past four years, her favourite experiences on council have involved
Wyndham’s Kim McAliney says she is passionate about giving everyone, regardless of their gender or socio-economic background, equal access to decision-making opportunities in their community. Ms McAliney, who resigned in June, served on Wyndham council for a total of 11 years, including twice as mayor and once as deputy mayor. “When I was irst elected, I was thrilled, and honoured to be given the opportunity to not only make a diference – but be the diference – to be a leader, an inspiration to women – to show what was possible with determination, persistence, tenacity and the willingness to pursue your dreams even with a young family,” she said. Ms McAliney was recently nominated by members of the Ministries of the Women’s Round Table, which is chaired by the Minister for Local Government, to sit on the Gender Parity in Local Government committee. “As a councillor there are challenges,” she said. “It’s a political environment, however you need to remember why you are there – to serve the people. “It’s an opportunity to develop and learn new skills and you can make a real diference.” Ms McAliney said she was proud to see Wyndham council endorse its Towards Equality Policy Statement and Action Plan earlier this year. “We have come a long way, no doubt, but there is still a way to go,” she said. “It is disappointing that in 160 years, only six female mayors have been elected in Wyndham. “I hope to see an increase in the number of women, and candidates from diverse backgrounds stand for election and be represented.” Ms McAliney said that aside from her council duties, she had spent 20 years as a cadet with the St Johns Ambulance Brigade. his aligns well with her role as Wyndham council’s safer communities portfolio holder. “Over the years, I have built close working partnerships with emergency services personnel from our local police force, SES, Coast Guard, Ambulance Vic and to the CFA,” she said. “I have immense respect and gratitude for our front-line responders, who all do a fantastic job in diicult circumstances – oten responding, assisting and helping the most vulnerable in our society.”

Macedon Ranges council Macedon Ranges mayor Janet Pearce may have only been in council for four years, but she says the experience has been a “huge learning curve”. Cr Pearce was elected to council in 2016 and has spent her time listening to local residents’ stories and attending community events across the region. But her involvement within the community

Spending time in the community that she calls home was one of the reasons she decided to pursue a career in local council. “I have always been very active in volunteering and have met such a diverse range of people over the years,” she said. “I realised that passionate, supported and resilient communities can achieve amazing things and are such an asset. “My children have grown up, attended school here and have been involved in many

She put her hand up as a mayoral candidate during the 2018 election and was voted in by her fellow councillors. She was re-elected as mayor in October last year. While the role of the mayor is all about “greater responsibilities” and becoming “more deeply involved” according to Cr Pearce, she says the role is not without its challenges. “I had always promised I would commit 100 per cent to the role,” she said. “At times it is challenging to reach and engage with everyone and people have diferent opinions, but in the end you make the decision you believe is best for the whole community and the shire. “You really are learning every day.” Females represent more than half of the Macedon Ranges councillors, including deputy mayor Mandi Mees. Cr Pearce is hoping the female representation among her council inspires other women to take up positions in local government. “It is important to have equality and diversity in representation of the community,” she said. “We need more women to get involved, to take that step forward and to believe in themselves that they can make a diference. “Being a councillor is one of the most fulilling opportunities available to residents.”

Maribyrnong council Making a diference at a grassroots level and being a role-model for other women have sustained Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter’s love of serving in local government for more than a decade. Before becoming a councillor she worked as a communications oicer at Hume council. Seeing the excitement of local young people at the opening of the Hume Global Learning Centre in Broadmeadows, Cr Carter understood the direct diference local government can make in the lives of residents. “I remember the naysayers saying the kids aren’t going to turn up, it’s Broadmeadows, but when the learning centre opened there was a queue out the door,” she said. “It was something that really struck me about the capacity to engage at this level.” Cr Carter soon moved to the west and decided to dip her toe into local politics, feeling
like “a ish out of water” at irst. She has now spent three terms and 12 years on council, and is the city’s current mayor, the second time she has held the role. Come the November elections at the end of this year, she plans to throw her hat back into the ring and seek a fourth term as a councillor. “I think it is the people that keeps me coming back,” she said. “We really have a special community here in the west, there are so many wonderful people and it just remains a real privilege to be able to serve them.” he rapid growth of Footscray in particular, but Maribyrnong generally, brings with it challenges and opportunities, according to Cr Carter. “One of the things I want to see get of the ground is the ’NeXT project’, the Footscray library redevelopment that is a personal passion project of mine because I would love to see a performing arts centre here,” she said.

Melton mayor Lara Carli has always wanted to serve the community. For much of the past two decades, Cr Carli has been involved in local government, irst as a young councillor in Whittlesea, and now coming to the end of her second term in Melton. It is a passion that stems back to her youth. “I grew up in a family where, at the dinner table, we would discuss community and world events,” Cr Carli said. “I became well aware of social justice at a very early age, so getting into politics seemed a natural choice for me. “I wanted to serve and give to others in a way that was not only meaningful but also have a long-lasting legacy for the community.” Ater attending her irst council meeting at a young age, Cr Carli made her irst steps into local government in 2003 when she was elected to Whittlesea council at just 24, juggling the demands of an 8-month-old child with her council responsibilities. Just a year later she was elected as mayor, making her the irst female to hold that position in the 130-year history of the council. When her family relocated to Melton, it was not long before she returned to local government, elected to Melton council in 2012 and 2016. “I love what I do, and it’s so rewarding to be part of the decision-making process that has the potential to positively impact the lives of thousands of people, not only now but for

I was motivated to run for council by my drive to make a diference in my community and to celebrate its successes,” she said. “I would also attribute this interest to my family background where my parents represented the Greek community and were actively involved in many community activities. his ignited a passion in me to serve the community in various forms throughout my career in education, and through volunteering on a lot of local committees.” She said the number of women on the council was a credit to the municipality. “Brimbank is one of only four municipalities in Victoria (alongside Darebin City Council, Macedon Ranges Shire Council and Yarra City Council) to have a majority of female councillors as well as a female mayor, deputy mayor and CEO,” she said. “In Brimbank, seven of our 11 elected councillors – or just over 60 per cent – are female. I was extremely pleased to see so many women voted into our council.” She said a large array of women can only be beneicial. “Women have a wealth of unique knowledge, experience, expertise and perspectives that they can bring to roles in council – either as councillors or in senior leadership positions. “Female participation in local government is improving, but still far too slow, in my opinion. I believe promoting more gender equality will help encourage more women to stand for oice.” Deputy mayor Cr Kim hien Truong echoed her sentiments, but said the wheel is slowly turning. “here have certainly been some challenges along the way,” Cr Truong said. “Gender equality is important for the whole community, and it is not only a women’s issue – we know that communities thrive in a society where men and women are treated equally.”

Hobsons Bay council A desire to improve the relationship between council and community led to Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates entering local government 18 years ago. She has been a councillor since 2012, served as mayor twice in 2014-15 and 2019-20, and as deputy mayor in 2013-14 and in 2016-17. Cr Gates has a strong interest in the environment and enhancing public open space. She is a qualiied environmental professional
with vast experience in contaminated land clean-up, pollution prevention, environmental compliance and waste management. Cr Gates’ greatest achievement in local government was seeing the former Laverton Primary School site on Epsom Street transformed into a modern, inclusive community park, which involved extensive community consultation. “Ater years of advocating to the state government to give the Epsom Street school site back to the community, council was able to purchase the site in 2014 and last year the

She says, her favourite job being mayor is the privilege of conducting citizenship ceremonies and getting to meet new people. Cr Gates supported a number of women with their election campaigns in 2016 and would encourage more women to get involved with local government. “Many women are concerned about being able to juggle multiple responsibilities around family and work commitments but it’s absolutely possible to multi-task … and still be a successful and efective community advocate,” she said.
