Local masks prove popular

Sunbury residents are masking up to help slow the spread of coronavirus, and business owner Sharyn Snook is encouraging residents to shop local.

The HomeGrown Gifts owner has been selling handmade masks for about a month but said she noticed a greater demand for locally-made masks after an announcement last week that wearing masks outside the house was to become compulsory.

“At least a handmade mask is more fun,” Ms Snook said. “You can really get it to it in with your personality.”

She has sold about 400 handmade masks, with many still on order.

“People are really conscious about what they are buying because they are trying to stay close to home …” she said. “I deinitely think this [stage three restrictions] has caused people to stay more local, partly because of their own safety, but I also think people have been reminded of the importance of small businesses.

“Hopefully it continues and it is not just a fad.”

Call for more virus data

By Jessica Micallef Hume council is calling on the state government to release speciic information about the municipality’s active coronavirus cases. he council will write to Health Minister Jenny Mikakos, to seek more “detailed” information on the COVID-19 cases in Hume.

Deputy mayor Jack Medcrat said more information and clarity on the cases would better help the council support the community through the pandemic.

“If the active cases are about our younger community then we can work with our youth and our schools,” he said.

“If the active cases are more about a particular cohort or community group, then we can work with the leaders of this group and put more messages out … and again be really speciic about the actions we can take.

“We have been supporting the Department of Health and Human Services through testing and we as council know we can further assist the government to stop the spread by getting key messages out to the groups most impacted.

“We understand the message is clear – no person is immune to this terrible virus.

“But if the active cases show a trend of pattern then this understanding will only assist us to take more speciic action.”

Cr Ann Potter said while she agreed having localised information was “extremely important”, she feared residents could become complacent if they knew what areas across Hume had few infections.

“We just cannot allow that to happen,” she said. “he major thing we need to get out is to follow those four [lockdown] rules and one of the most important rules is to stay at home.

“Unless we stay at home, unless we follow those four basic rules, the six weeks could turn into eight weeks, it could turn into 12 weeks.”

Cr Joseph Haweil said every resident, regardless of what suburb they lived in, needed to follow the stay-at-home orders that have

been issued by the state government.

“If the purpose of the information is for us to better tailor our approach, then that is ine,” he said.

“Anything we can do to get the message out further is something I support, but really … everyone, regardless of what suburb, hotzone or not, should be following the stay-at-home orders that have been issued.”

Hume has the third highest number of active coronavirus cases across Victoria. As of Sunday, there were 354 conirmed active cases from a total of 763 cases since the pandemic began. he Macedon Ranges has eight active cases, and has recorded 18 cases overall.

Push for higher JobSeeker rates

By Jessica Micallef Health service Cobaw Community Health is calling for the JobSeeker rate to be higher.

Last week, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that JobSeeker and JobKeeper payments will be continuing from the end of the September until March 29 next year, but at reduced rates.

JobKeeper will be reduced from $1500 a fortnight to $1200 for full-time workers and $750 for part-time employees who work 20 hours or less a week.

Cobaw Community Health chief executive Margaret McDonald predicted a “massive

Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters said there were 10,279 people currently relying on JobSeeker payments in the Bendigo electorate, which covers parts of the Macedon Ranges including Woodend and Kyneton.

Ms Chesters fears a drop in the JobSeeker and JobKeeper payments would make it diicult for

individuals to aford the essentials.

“I have met with a number of locals in the hospitality and tourism industry who have told me that we are far from the recovery stages of this pandemic,” she said.

“With capacity limits in place and Melbourne lockdown continuing, our restaurants, bars and cafes are still relying on support packages to stay aloat.

“Over the past few months, I have heard a number of stories from organisations and individuals about how the boost in the JobSeeker rate is allowing people to get out of poverty and live with dignity.”

Windows to happiness Residents at Warrina Aged Care in New Gisborne are helping to brighten the lives of local children during the coronavirus pandemic.

Residents of the aged care centre have been decorating windows with diferent themes and games for children to look at and play along with as they walk past the facility.

Nursing director Tara Chandrasegran said the residents were concerned how the recent rise in COVID-19 cases would afect children. “he idea is, when children are going for a walk or are on their way home from school, they

can stop by and have a look at the windows,” she said. “At the moment we have a space theme, a superhero theme and at our main door we have got dinosaurs.

“As part of our crat program, they are coming up with diferent window [themes]. We have a football one coming up and a food one where you have to guess the ingredients.”

Due to the recent rise in virus cases and many aged care facilities across the state being exposed to COVID-19, the New Gisborne centre is not allowing visitors into the facility.

However, residents can still see their loved

ones through “window visits” and online video calls.

“I think they [the residents] are coping much better than the irst time,” Ms Chandrasegran said of reintroduced lockdown restrictions. “hey know that the support of the staf is there and that the window visits are still there. “he residents are hearing about the risk of COVID-19 getting into aged care facilities so I think they are welcoming of having less people here.”

Western Water is reminding customers to take care of their pipes this winter.

With cooler than average temperatures expected across the state, the water company says residents need to take extra caution to avoid pipe blockages.

Western Water’s acting chief operating oicer Paul Clark said throwing fats, oils and grease down the sink can cause issues.

“During winter, problems can happen much quicker as fats harden faster in colder temperatures,” he said.

Mr Clark said Western Water customers can avoid pipe blockages by being aware of what can and cannot go down the drain.

“Only lush the three P’s – pee, poo and toilet paper – and never pour fats, oils or grease down the sink,” he said.

“Wipes, even ones that say ‘lushable’ on the packaging, should never be lushed.”

To ensure a constant supply of hot water, Western Water also recommends customers cover their meters during the colder weather.

“Water meters and pipes that are exposed to frost can stop your water supply and in the worst-case scenario, the pipe can break,” Mr Clark said.

“To prevent this from happening, cover your meter with a blanket or container the night before frosts are predicted.”

Man arrested Police arrested a man last Monday in relation to a historical indecent assault.

The incident allegedly occurred at a Ligar Street swimming pool in Sunbury some time between 1984 and 1986. It is believed the man, aged in his 40s at the time, indecently assaulted a child at the pool. A homastown manufacturer is on a mission to make face masks as comfortable as possible.

PACKQUEEN has designed an Ear Saver Band – an expandable piece of plastic that sits behind your head which masks can be looped onto – to reduce the irritation and tension the elastic loops can cause on the back of your ears.

Owner Monique Samara said the band was designed to relieve the pain oten experienced from wearing face masks.

“We had a number of customers asking if we had any product that would help reduce tension … so our team immediately got to work designing the Ear Saver Band,” she said.

Ms Samara said PACKQUEEN usually manufactures postage, git and food packaging but began making personal protective equipment, including face shields for essential workers, in April.

She said the past few months had been busy as she juggled her role as a mum to Oden, 8, and Zoe, 4, while also designing the face shields and Ear Saver Band. “he primary focus of these projects has been to help the community by producing products in demand by front line workers and keeping manufacturing jobs within Australia.”

Construction company Newton Constructions Pty Ltd has been appointed to build Gisborne Primary School’s new competition-grade gymnasium and administration building and refurbish learning areas and playground facilities. The new upgrades and buildings form stage two of the school’s $10 million upgrade. Stage one, which included the refurbishment of learning areas, is complete. Stage two works are expected to be complete mid-2021.

Dance school’s future dim

By Jessica Micallef Amy Citroen fears the future of her dance and cheer school is bleak without government funding to support the performing arts industry.

Signature Cheer and Dance Studio’s doors have been closed for 20 weeks as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Ms Citroen says it is unlikely they would open again in 2020. “he Gisborne location we had to close for the remainder of the year because we hire a school venue and they won’t allow us into the venue,” she said. “he Department of Health and Human Services has directed the school that only essential personnel are allowed on the property so they are not hiring out the space.

“With Sunbury being metropolitan, we couldn’t reopen.”

When restrictions eased for a short period of time in June, itness centres including gyms and dance schools were allowed to reopen.

But Ms Citroen made the decision to wait until term 3 to reopen her doors. “here was only ive days let of the term for all the kids before school holidays so we decided … to open fresh for term 3, but those plans were squashed,” she said.

Due to the studio’s closure, staf have had their hours cut back and the business had taken a big hit inancially. “Only one of my staf qualiied for JobKeeper … and our student base has been reduced to about 30 per cent of what it was at the start of the year.”

Ms Citroen has transitioned her students to online classes, but she says the switch has not been easy. “We have been getting loods of emails of people telling me they are going to come back next year [but] it’s at the point where I don’t know if I am coming back next year.”

New push to delay elections he Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) is renewing its call for the state government to defer this year’s council elections due to the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the MAV, the pandemic has impacted the ability for candidates to campaign and consult with their communities on “vital” issues.

MAV president Coral Ross and chief executive Kerry hompson met with newly appointed Local Government Minister Shaun Leane earlier this month to raise the issue.

Cr Ross said many Victorian councillors had provided examples of diiculties currently facing the local government sector brought on by coronavirus.

“Following a survey of all councils and chief executive oicer’s earlier this year, the MAV called for a 12-month deferral of council elections, currently scheduled for October 2020,” she said. “With the current increase in COVID-19 numbers and the subsequent wide-scale lockdown, we are calling on the local government minister to reconsider holding elections.”

MAV’s deputy president Cr Ruth Gstrein said many rural and regional councils were highlighting concerns that some wards may not have enough candidates prepared to run for election in the current environment.

Victorian local government elections are scheduled to go ahead on October 24 via postal votes.

Art to strengthen reconciliation

By Jessica Micallef Macedon Ranges council is calling on local Aboriginal artists to submit a unique art piece to be the hallmark of its Reconciliation Plan. he council will commission the art to support its irst Reconciliation Action Plan, which relects the reconciliation priorities of the region’s traditional owners and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. he artwork will feature on the cover of the Reconciliation Action Plan document and

accompanying promotional material used during related activities. he art piece must be created by artists who identify as either Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung or Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung or other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander People who reside in the shire, and relect the histories and cultures of the three traditional owner groups based on conversations with the registered Aboriginal parties or Aboriginal elders.

Releasing her inner art Elly-Louise Tyquin is ready to release her artwork into the public eye. he Sunbury artist’s newest exhibition, Release, focuses on the processes to aid mental health. he 25-year-old said her exhibition was a combination of new and old artwork.

“I have always worked with wool and ibre and I was doing large installations and then I began doing more wall-mounted artwork,” she said. “he exhibition brings together the starting point of a few of those works and then a new body of work that I began this year. “he exhibition is not so much about the end products, it’s more the processes and what it means for me in terms of managing my headspace.” he exhibition is a mixture of abstract illustrations, wool-based and sculptural ibre artwork and weaving. “he whole exhibition is abstract, nothing

is replicating real life,” she said. “It’s a type of therapy in terms of processing things that are going around you.”

Release opens at the Sunbury Gallery in the Hume Global Learning Centre next month and runs until October 18.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Hume council will produce an online walk-through for the public to view the exhibition.

Earlier this month, the state government introduced new rules outlawing the sport and forcing clubs to shut their doors.

However, Victoria is the only state to introduce a ban on golf, with the sport able to continue on greens interstate, as long as social distancing regulations are followed.

Mr van Pelt said the Victorian ban had caused a lot of frustration among golfers.

He has called for the state government to reverse its decision.

“Golf is an outdoor activity that can be run in line with the isolation requirements,” he said.

Council virus support plan

By Laura Michell Financial support measures aimed at easing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Macedon Ranges residents, businesses and sporting clubs have been adopted by council. he new support measures included the suspension of late payment penalties on animal registrations until September 30; not charging interest on overdue rates or other payments until September 30; and ceasing debt collecting activities on unpaid rates until September 30.

Council lifeline for business

By Laura Michell More than 130 businesses have received inancial help from Hume council to help them stay aloat during the COVID-19 pandemic. he council recently distributed $980,741 to 134 businesses as part of its Small and Medium Business Quick Support Grants. he grants were aimed at supporting business growth and creating local jobs.

Businesses with up to ive employees were eligible for grants of up to $5000, while businesses with six to 10 employees could apply for up to $10,000. Businesses with between 11 and 20 employees could access grants of up to $20,000.

Hume Cr Joseph Haweil said the council received more than 350 applications with 134 businesses meeting the grant criteria.

He said distributing the grants was “bittersweet”. “hese businesses, who council have just been able to extend a helping hand, are now facing the same challenges due to the reintroduction of stage three restrictions due to COVID-19 until mid-August,” he said.

“At Hume, we want to see businesses succeed and we want to see local people employed in these businesses.”

Founder Marisa Debattista said the grant had helped pay the bills while the organisation worked out how to operate within the conines of state government restrictions.

She said SCAR had been forced to close its shelter to the public, with adoption now

by appointment only. It has also switched its community vet clinic to a kerbside service to reduce the number of people in the clinic.

Ms Debattista said the grant had also helped SCAR start up a drive-through pet food bank, providing free pet food to people in need. “he grant gave us some breathing space

while we worked out what to do next,” she said.

“We are trying to work around what we need to be doing to make sure our charity survives and people get the help they need.

“Without the extra funding … we were thinking it would be the end of our organisation.”

By Jessica Micallef Many people are familiar with Tiger King - the Netlix documentary that details the life of Joe Exotic’s wild animal safari in the United States.

But Australia once had it’s own big cat safari in Bacchus Marsh.

Gisborne ilmmaker Darcy Prendergast is creating a documentary called Strange Beasts, based on his father’s, Ron Prendergast, time as a zookeeper at the Bacchus March Lion Safari during the 1970s and ’80s.

According to Darcy, the safari was home to dozens of wild animals including lions, tigers, deer, antelope, hippopotamus, water bufalos and wolves.

“It was a drive-your-own-car lion and tiger safari,” he said. “he biggest calling card was the big cats – they had several paddocks of lion prides and tigers.

“Visitors would drive their cars through the precinct under the somewhat watchful eye of a couple of employees and these huge beasts would do as they pleased.

“Some people would come in with a brand new car, with a new vinyl roof and leave in absolute tatters or leave with a missing side mirror or a big old dent in the bonnet.

“It was a pretty wild environment and certainly one where close encounters were the calling cards.”

Darcy said during his dad’s one and a half years as a zookeeper at the safari, his main role was to feed the big cats and break up the ights that occurred between the prides. “hat was one of dad’s irst jobs,” he said.

“He had some prior zookeeper experience and he was one of the only ones with some zookeeper experience as it [the safari] was run by Ashton’s Circus, so it was all born from a circus background rather than a zoo background.

“here are a lot of wild stories dad has from his time there. He was chased by lions and tigers on many occasions.

“One night, there was a water bufalo that escaped onto the Ballarat Highway so dad jumped on a bike … to try and veer the water bufalo of the highway and back into the park.” he safari was open for a decade before it closed its doors ater the precinct fell into a “state of disrepair”.

“It was a rather sad ending for a lot of the animals,” Darcy said.

“It was closed by the RSPCA. here were several counts of animal mistreatment and negligence and the park had lost its popularity.

- Darcy Prendergast “here wasn’t a lot of desexing happening for the lions and the tigers [and] there were several animals that were emaciated. “he wheels had fallen of the cart and it begs the question should it have really been open.”

Darcy has received $50,000 in Screen Australia funding to complete his documentary that is part animation, part archival footage and part live reenactments. “he money enables us to retell some of dad’s wildest stories that are impossible to do in a re-enactment setting,” he said.

“We will be taking it [the documentary] to … hopefully Sundance Film Festival or Cannes Film Festival.

“Ater that, we will be looking for a broadcaster, be it on television or on an online space.”

Shared facilities and driving ranges cannot open and equipment must not be shared or rented.

If you live in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, you cannot travel to play golf outside this area.

What activities will be restricted?

You can only exercise or undertake sporting activities outside with one other person or household members. You must be able to keep 1.5 metres distance between yourself and others.

Indoor sports centres including gyms, training facilities and pools will be closed.

Community sport training and competition cannot occur within metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire.

If you live in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, you cannot attend or participate in community sport elsewhere.

People aged 18 years and younger are not exempt from this restriction Some outdoor sport facilities will be closed.

Personal training outdoors can occur but with a limit of two participants, in addition to the instructor.

Can I leave the house to do exercise outdoors?

Yes. In metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire you can leave your home to exercise outdoors in a public space, either alone, with members of your household or with one other person outside your household. his includes walking, running, hiking, bike riding, suring, kayaking and other types of exercise such as yoga in the park.

In order to help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) across the state, you cannot leave metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire to exercise. If you live outside of metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire you cannot enter these areas for the purpose of exercise or recreation.

While exercising with people outside your household, you should keep at least 1.5 metres between yourself and others.

You should also stay close to home and use common sense and consideration when it comes to these activities.

Can I exercise with others?

You can exercise outdoors with people who normally live with you or with one other person outside your household. his includes walking the dog, yoga in the park, or going for a run, bike riding.

Winter warmers Winter is here and with it, rising energy bills. It’s easy to turn up the heat as the temperature drops, but before you reach for the switch there are a few things you can do to ensure you’re not blowing hot air, and your hard-earned money, out the door.

Check your heater Regular cleaning and maintenance of your heater will ensure any minor problems are detected before they become larger, and more expensive, issues.

Seal windows and doors You would be amazed how much cold air can seep in from even the smallest opening around external doors and windows.

For a quick ix, door snakes or door sweeps, will give you an immediate barrier to cold draughts. Weather strips and foam tape are also an inexpensive way to seal doors and windows.

If your windows and doors are a little older it might be time to look at re-caulking (or sealing) any gaps. here are plenty of DIY caulkers available on the market but if you’re not conident it’s always best to enlist the help of a professional. he dressing you have on your window can also make a big impact on the amount of warm air you lose to the outside. If you can, hang insulated curtains – they will keep the cold air outside and help maintain the warmth. If you don’t have pelmets another trick is to put rolled up towels along the top of your curtain rods to help stop any heat escaping.

Layer up Add an extra layer of clothing to keep you warm. You shouldn’t have to wear a beanie and pufer jacket inside, but adding a layer of thermals, a cosy knit or warm slippers will keep you warmer without reaching to turn the heater dial up.

If you’re enjoying a weekend movie night on the couch, grab a blanket and snuggle in.

You could also consider an occasional rug for cold loors. Let’s face it, tiles are great to keep clean and are hygienic, but in winter they can be cold underfoot and it takes a lot to warm them up. Place rugs in high traic areas during winter and pack them away in the summer.

some houses, but if you can close doors to any unused rooms it will mean less energy used to heat the rooms you’re using.
