Big screen action is back Big-screen movie magic is back. The Village Cinema at Paciic Werribee is set to re-open tomorrow following the easing of coronavirus restrictions. Other Village Cinemas across the state are hoping to reopen later next month, including the Sunshine theatre on July 20. Village Entertainment chief executive Kirk Edwards said he was optimistic about welcoming people back to cinemas, after sell-out crowds attended the reopening of the Coburg Drive-In earlier this month. Village Cinemas has implemented several new health and safety measures for its reopening. Social distancing measures will be enforced within foyers, restrooms and inside cinema auditoriums, with a maximum of 20 seated patrons per space. Seating will be allocated to allow for every second row to be vacant, as well as for a two-seat gap on either side of each group of cinema-goers. Double digit crime rise By Alesha Capone A sharp rise in aggravated residential burglaries has driven a 15.3 per cent increase in crime across Wyndham in the past 12 months. Victoria Police statistics, released last week, for the year to March revealed that residential aggravated crime crates in some suburbs had more than doubled, or tripled, compared to last year. Wyndham’s overall crime rate had risen from 14,962 ofences recorded in the 12 months to March 2019 to 17,244 ofences to March 2020. Crime rises included residential aggravated burglaries (from 74 to 157 ofences), aggravated

non-residential burglaries (from 729 to 815) and non-aggravated residential burglaries (from 320 to 421). Point Cook recorded 35 aggravated burglaries (compared to 11 previously), Truganina 15 (four previously), Tarneit 22 (10 previously), Wyndham Vale 20 (nine previously) and Williams Landing eight (one previously). here were also 38 aggravated residential burglaries in Werribee (22 previously) and 14 in Hoppers Crossing (13 previously). Reports of family violence assaults increased (from 839 to 906 incidents) and non-family violence assaults (from 422 to 523 incidents). Sexual ofences increased in number (from

386 to 443 incidents), drug possessions (from 610 to 632 incidents) and criminal damage (from 1038 to 1245 incidents). Aggravated robberies in Wyndham – robberies in which a weapon is used – also increased signiicantly (from 132 to 207 incidents). Overall, there were 44 aggravated robberies in Hoppers Crossing (compared to 22 previously), 42 in Point Cook (21 previously), 36 in Tarneit (28 previously), 34 in Werribee (25 previously), 25 in Wyndham Vale (10 previously), 19 in Truganina (nine previously) and six in Williams Landing (11 previously). het was a major concern in Wyndham,

such as motor vehicle thets (from 494 to 699 cases), stealing from motor vehicles (from 1278 to 1816 cases) and stealing from retail stores (from 856 to 1084 cases). A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Wyndham police were urging residents to maintain their home security, ater noticing a rise in opportunistic burglary ofences since the coronavirus restrictions were introduced in March. “Local police intelligence shows there has been an increase in incidents where ofenders have entered homes through unlocked doors and garages or [stolen] valuable items let in vehicles on the street,” the spokeswoman said.

New generation of gangs in west By Alesha Capone Police have expressed concern about youth gangs in Melbourne’s west following the fatal stabbing of a teenager in Deer Park last week. Six youths, including a 13 year-old Hoppers Crossing boy, have been charged with violent disorder and afray ater the death of 15 year-old Solomone Taufeulungaki last Tuesday. At a press conference last week, Victoria Police North West Metro Commander Tim Hansen said police have been deploying extra resources in the west for “a considerable period

of time”, in relation to the “ongoing gang issue”. “We are acutely aware of the risk these street gangs present to us,” Commander Hansen said. Star Weekly understands there are about six active gangs in the west. Last month, police charged 15 teenagers and young adults in relation to an alleged brawl at a Hoppers Crossing carpark. Up to 40 people were believed to be involved in the brawl, which resulted in a 17-year-old being hospitalised with stab wounds. he Age newspaper reported the brawl was caused by rising tensions between two gangs.

Concern over virus spike here are two active cases of coronavirus in Wyndham, as the state government scrambles to avoid a second wave of COVID-19. Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday extended Victoria’s state of emergency to July 19 ater more than 120 new cases were disgnosed within the past week. As of Monday, there were 1845 cases diagnosed across Victoria, including 59 in Wyndham, two of them remain active. Among the weekend’s new cases was an employee at Grill’d Highpoint. he case was detected during routine testing. “he employee worked one day while infectious last week and is now isolating,” Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement. “Contact tracing is underway, and the food outlet will undergo a deep clean.” A primary school in Albanvale will remain closed for several days ater a second staf member tested positive. Victoria’s chief health oicer professor Brett Sutton said the main increase in cases has been through cases in families – where people have not followed advice around physical distancing, hygiene and limiting the number of people in thier home. “As a consequence, the Victorian government has announced a tightening of the rules and has reduced the number of visitors you can have in your home to ive,” Professor Sutton said. “Outside of the home, people can now gather in groups of up to 10 only.” Dr Sutton said anyone who has been working from home should continue to do so. Businesses located in the 3029 and 3030 postcodes have applied for the most JobKeeper payments in the state, outside of Melbourne. Figures from the Department of Treasury show that 3681 businesses in the 3029 area – which covers Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina – have applied for the federal government’s JobKeeper program. Within the 3030 postcode – which includes Werribee, Werribee South, Point Cook, Quandong and Derrimut – 3272 businesses have applied for JobKeeper. he 3000 postcode (Melbourne) placed irst on the list with 6693 applications. he JobKeeper scheme is a temporary subsidy for businesses signiicantly afected by the coronavirus. More than 884,400 Australian businesses have had their JobKeeper applications processed by Treasury. In Wyndham, the council has also put together a $5 million WynLocal Business Recovery and Growth Program in response to coronavirus restrictions. his included $1.5 million in grants for eligible local businesses, to help them adapt and grow when emerging from the shutdown. he council ofered three levels of funding, with grants of $5000, $10,000 or $20,000 available, based on a business’ size (measured by its number of full-time employees). Applications closed on June 9. Wyndham’s future focused economy portfolio holder, Cr Walter Villagonzalo, said supporting the resurgence of the local economy was a strong priority for council. “Successful applicants will be given a great opportunity to implement initiatives that focus on recovery and longer-term growth as we transition to a post COVID-19 economy,” he said.

Singer, songwriter and vocal coach Ricky Muscat describes starring in the latest season of he Voice as an “amazing experience”. Muscat, from Werribee, auditioned for the Channel Nine show in March and had two of the four judges – Boy George and Kelly Rowland – turn their chairs, meaning they both wanted him to join their team of singers. Muscat chose Boy George to be his mentor on the show. “he main reason I chose George, is that my dad’s name is George and my niece’s name is Georgie,” he said. On Monday night, Muscat exited the show during its “battle” round – although he may be given another chance as a wild card later in the season. Muscat is no stranger to television, having inished ith on Australian Idol 2006. He also teaches at Vocal Arts Studios in Airport West. Muscat said he was actually helping students prepare for their own auditions earlier this year when producers encouraged him to try out. “When the opportunity comes your way, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and take it – it’s just inspired the whole school, they’re over the moon one of their teachers is on TV,” he said. Parents Pranav and Shivani Desai last month sold their Manor Lakes investment property to raise funds for their son’s medical treatment as he battles a rare and aggressive childhood brain tumour. Six-year-old Ethan was diagnosed with Difuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma in September. here are no treatments available in Australia for the disease, so the family is planning to travel to the United States, in the hope of being accepted into a clinical trial. he trial and related expenses will cost more than $500,000. An online fundraising campaign has so far raised $130,080 towards the trial, travel and accommodation expenses. Proceeds from the sale of the Manor Lakes property have gone toward the trip. Millions for court, zoo revamp he state government has announced two major projects for Wyndham under its $2.7 billion Building Works package, as part of eforts to boost the economy and create jobs. Werribee MP Tim Pallas last week said that the package included $2.57 million to improve the Werribee Court Specialist Family Violence waiting area. he work, which will update both the ground and irst-loor waiting areas, includes painting, new carpets and new seating. Werribee Open Range Zoo will also beneit from a $2 million investment in the Werribee Recycled Water Expansion Project, in partnership with City West Water. “In addition to boosting the future visitor economy, this investment will support the expansion of the zoo and improve the health of the Werribee River,” a statement from the state government said. he Building Works package includes $1.18 billion in education infrastructure projects and half-a-billion dollars for public and community housing, to upgrade 23,000 dwellings and build 168 new homes across the state. A love of teaching Wyndham Vale’s Rethika Ravi loves teaching others, whether she is in a dance studio or a university lecture hall. Dr Ravi moved from India to Melbourne in 2000 to pursue her masters in applied microbiology and biotechnology. She also has a doctorate in oncology. She now works as a lecturer at Victoria University, teaching nursing and paramedicine. From the age of ive, Dr Ravi was trained in the classical Indian dance of Bharathnatyam, along with singing and painting. She said it was her passion for dance that compelled her to start the Shakthiswaraa School of Dance from her home studio last year. “I love teaching, especially when students who come to me with no background in dance

and they graduate,” Dr Ravi said. “I love to see them get on stage and have that conidence to perform, it gives me so much satisfaction.” A video of Dr Ravi performing a dance piece, alongside her students Priyanka and Rakshana, was recently live-streamed, as part of Wyndham council’s Ghost Light online series. he initiative aims to showcase local artists during the COVID-19 pandemic, by ilming them performing at the Wyndham Cultural Centre. he videos are available for residents to watch via the Wyndham Together website. “I’d like to say thank you to all those lovely people who let positive comments and reviews on our video,” Dr Ravi said. Three cars were stolen from a Laverton North storage yard between 8pm and 11pm on June 4. A black 2009 Nissan 370Z Coupe with no registration; a grey 1970 Holden ute with registration 1BG 1AB; and a red 1993 Nissan 300zx with registration ZED93 were stolen from the Hume Drive premises. Learner driver over limit A learner driver intercepted by police on Hogans Road, Hoppers Crossing on June 14 returned a breath test of 0.315. Food for families A community project is helping Wyndham residents who are struggling to put food on the table during the COVID-19 pandemic. he Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing, the Hoppers Crossing Apex Club, DiCaprio Family Restaurant in Hoppers Crossing and Uniting Wyndham have teamed up for the initiative. he program, which was launched at the end of April, sees 40 meals per week distributed to families living in Wyndham. Before the project started, members from the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing approached DiCaprio’s manager, Eli Touma, to take part. Uniting Wyndham, which already partners with the Rotary Club on a number of other local

initiatives, agreed for its Werribee headquarters to become the distribution point for the meals program. Members of the Hoppers Crossing Apex Club ofered to fund 50 per cent of the cost ater hearing about the venture. Since the food project began, the president of the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing, Khurram Khan, has been receiving messages of gratitude from recipients via the club’s Facebook page. One message read: “Since the corona, my three children and I were fully reliant on canned food – thanks to you guys, we had hot fresh food from the restaurant ater 3-4 months. hanks and wish you all the goodness.”

School hit by toxic soil ind By Alesha Capone A Werribee school has shut its prep and kindergarten areas to conduct extra soil testing, ater sample tests from a non-operational area of the campus revealed the presence of PFAS compounds. taking place. he land tested was previously leased by the Country Fire Authority (CFA) from the college in a combination of long-term and short-term arrangements.” he size of the area tested covers about 1570 square metres. “As part of the college’s repossession of a section of this leased land, although not required under local building or planning requirements, our college decided it was prudent to undertake additional testing when taking back this land, given the proximity to our student areas,” the statement said.

“he safety of our students and staf is always our highest priority and we are undertaking further environmental soil testing in operational areas of the college.” To allow for the additional testing, the college closed its prep and kindergarten areas for the week commencing Monday, June 22. “here is no immediate risk to our students and staf, and indeed the health and safety of our community.” he college is planning to release the additional test results to the school community, once the indings are available.

Recipe for a fundraiser Students from Point Cook Senior Secondary College are cooking up a charity project. he school’s year 12 VCAL personal development skills students are creating a website with breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes for other students, their families and college staf. VCAL teacher Callan McDonald said the students were also running a fundraising campaign for Autism Spectrum Australia. he school community will be asked to donate to the campaign, in return for access to the online cookbook. Mr McDonald said that while the online cookbook would not be accessible to the wider community, the students were hoping Wyndham residents would also contribute donations. He said that before starting the cookbook, the students nominated groups they wanted to raise money for, and then voted for one.

Mr McDonald said the VCAL students had contributed about 60 recipes, including some from diferent cultural backgrounds, to the online cookbook. “I think the fact that everyone is contributing their own pages and working within a team to do their own unique contribution is something which the students are really enjoying,” he said. Mr McDonald said the VCAL project has already raised more than $400 for Autism Spectrum Australia, prompting the students to change their original fundraising goal from $500 to $750. he students are aiming to inalise their total fundraising sum ater the upcoming school holidays. start HAL research at VU, with participants from the west. Victoria University’s Dr Hanatsu Nagano is working with a cutting-edge Japanese robotics company on technology which can help people with a disability to regain some mobility. Dr Nagano, a Tarneit resident, has received international awards for inventing the ISEAL shoe insoles, which help to prevent falls in elderly people. Now he is working with Cyberdyne to introduce robot technology called the Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) into Australia. Dr Nagano’s work with Cyberdyne (which, anecdotally is the name of a ictional robotics company in the Terminator ilms) is the result of a meeting with Cyberdyne chief executive Professor Yoshiyuki Sankai in Japan last year. One version of the HAL system helps with leg function, and another is a full-body exoskeleton for the arms, legs and torso. “HAL is the irst wearable cyborg and an exoskeleton assistive device for people with movement disability,” Dr Nagano said. “When people make movement, the central nervous system, for example, the brain or spinal cord, sends a command to muscles as a form of micro electricity. “If nervous connection is damaged due to car accident, disease or injury, this command transportation can be disturbed.” However, HAL senses these commands through a sensor attached to the skin of the wearer. “HAL picks up this micro electricity and operates the external robotic device attached to the damaged limb,” Dr Nagano said. “In another word, HAL understands people’s intention and assists them with reproducing the intended movement.” In 2013, HAL received a European

Concern over truck movements By Alesha Capone Wyndham councillor Mia Shaw has encouraged residents to have their say on a pilot project which may lead to more quarry trucks using local roads. he state government has selected Wyndham and the Shire of South Gippsland for inclusion in the Strategic Extractive Resource Areas (SERA) pilot project, which aims to trial new planning controls to help secure a long-term supply of sand and rock for future Victorian building projects. he SERA proposes new planning scheme

controls over existing quarry operations and on land where new quarrying operations could potentially be established. he state government intends for Wyndham and South Gippsland to trial the newly developed planning controls for SERA before they are rolled out in other regions. It is proposed the pilot project would be carried out on parts of Ballan Road, the Princes Freeway, Dohertys Road, Edgars Road, Argona Road, Greens Road, Bulban Road, Bacchus Marsh Werribee Road and Little River Road. Cr Shaw said that, according to the SERA documents, primary markets for quarry

materials extend across Greater Melbourne and Geelong, and also to projects such as the Cherry Creek Youth Justice Centre, WestGate Tunnel and Metro Tunnel. Cr Shaw said this could potentially mean more quarry trucks on Wyndham’s roads, as they are used to transport materials to construction sites across the state. However, Cr Shaw said the state government has not yet committed to funding the duplication of Ballan Road, which would be needed if more trucks were to start travelling on it. Cr Shaw also said the proposed SERA overlay bufer of 500 metres between quarrying

operations and sensitive land uses, such as residential, might not be large enough. he SERA documents state that quarry operators have identiied “increasing road congestion as the key transport-related issue impacting their operations”. Operators also identiied residential estates as “encroaching on bufers and transport routes”, especially during blasting, and night time operating curfews as operating challenges. Teen hits right notes At 16 years of age, Josh Melaku has impressed luminaries from Australia’s music industry to win a section of the Homegrown Superstars Australia singing competition. Billed as Australia’s irst online singing competition, the contest allows people to enter a 60-second clip of themselves singing, via Instagram. Every week, judges such as Casey Donovan, Rob Mills and Angela Bishop select six of the top entrants. he public then votes for the winner. Melaku won week eight of the competition, in which participants were asked to perform a song from a television show or ilm. Melaku, who is in year 10 at Werribee Secondary College, sang City of Stars from La La Land. He also took part in an Instagram live open mic performance, as part of the contest. Melaku said he was encouraged to enter

Homegrown Superstars Australia by his friend Patrick, a guitarist and singer with whom he sometimes collaborates. Melaku said he began singing lessons in year 7 and sings with his church’s band. He has also performed in a number of school musicals and concerts, including at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. “For me, I just like the type of feeling you get while singing, such as from duets and harmonies,” he said. “Or even if it’s just me and the piano, I just love it.” Ater winning week eight of the competition, Melaku received $250 in prize money. he competition’s organisers also donated $250 to a charity of Melaku’s choice, an international Black Lives Matter fund. Principal’s new vision By Alesha Capone he newly-appointed principal of a future Truganina school says she is looking forward to greeting new students and families next year. Natalie Nelson will be the foundation principal of Truganina South East Primary School (the interim name for the school), which is set to open next year. Ms Nelson has served as principal of Altona Primary School for just over 12 months, and was principal of Ashburton Primary School prior to that. “I moved from the east to the west because I became interested in the vision and plan by local councils in growth corridors to grow a vibrant community network with schools as part of that hub,” Ms Nelson said. Ms Nelson said that she felt “honoured” to have been part of Altona Primary. “It is such a delightful school that focuses on what matters most; children,” she said. Ms Nelson said that during her time at the Altona school, she felt proud to have introduced Auslan language lessons; included the school’s values in a song and dance written and choreographed by pupils; and improved the students’ physical and digital learning environment. Rad revamp of skate park Wyndham council has completed a $400,000 expansion of the Point Cook Skate Park. he expansion, which has doubled the size of the original skate park at Boardwalk Park, includes a mini-ramp, spine and kicker ramps, new seating, pathways and landscaping. Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the Point Cook Skate Park expansion had been speciically designed to appeal to skaters and scooter riders of all skill levels. “he new features are suitable for beginner and intermediate skaters, so they can build up their skills before tackling the concave dip,” Cr Maynard said. “his expansion will give beginner and intermediate skaters and scooter riders the chance to hone their skills and take on more challenging courses as they improve. “he project was created hand-in-hand with the community, and I would particularly like to thank all of those people who provided input into consultation for the project.” Cr Maynard has reminded residents using the skate park to observe state government guidelines on the number of people allowed in outdoor areas, which is currently a maximum of 20. he expansion was funded through Wyndham City’s capital works program.

Call to support asylum seekers By Alesha Capone Wyndham, Maribyrnong, Brimbank and Hume councils have joined 30 other councils across the nation which are calling on the federal government to ensure asylum seekers are provided with a “liveable income”. he Local Government Mayoral Taskforce Supporting People Seeking Asylum has started the Back Your Neighbour Campaign, to protest against proposed cuts to the Status Resolution Support Services (SRSS) program. he Back Your Neighbour website stated

that earlier this year, the federal government outlined a plan to cut SRSS support for up to 7000 people who have come to Australia seeking asylum. he SRSS scheme provides payments to asylum seekers living in the community while the federal government inalises their protection claim. “Without these support programs, thousands of people seeking asylum will become homeless or destitute, forcing them to use already overstretched council and charity sector services,” the Back Your Neighbour

“he COVID-19 pandemic has deepened their inancial crisis because their casual work has dried up and they are not eligible for Centrelink beneits.” Ater the federal government made cuts to the SRSS last year, the state government stepped in to provide $3 million to help asylum seekers living in Victoria. He described the council’s existing plan to defer rates for some businesses for six months because of the pandemic as “not good enough” and said Wyndham was home to many

migrants and young families who had already lost jobs or businesses in the current crisis. Several Wyndham councillors criticised the move, one comparing the idea to a Monty Python skit. extra $2.80 to $4 per week. Cr Kim McAliney said Cr Khan had not provided any inancial modelling to support a 10 per cent rate reduction, which would result in “severe cuts” to the council’s capital programs and staf. Students and staf from Emmanuel College have put their best foot forward to raise $5800 for the Relay for Life. Members from the school’s Point Cook and Altona North campuses gathered together for a Relay for Life event, an annual campaign which raises funds for the Cancer Council, earlier this year. As a team, more than 100 Emmanuel pupils and teachers walked and ran a combined 3532 laps around the school, including the gym. Overall, the laps amounted to a distance of about 1130 kilometres. he college’s leader of mission support, Celeste Casale, said the evening also included dancing, singing and eating pizza. “At 9pm, the students and staf gathered together for a ceremony in gym to remember past family and friends who have lost their battle to cancer, but also to pray to those who are ighting or who have survived their battle

New overpass installed

By Alesha Capone An innovative Wyndham council project is using rubbish to repair and resurface roads. he council recently resurfaced Geddes Crescent in Hoppers Crossing with the equivalent of 34,000 plastic bags. A 210-metre portion of the road was resealed with PlastiPhalt, an asphalt mix made from recycled plastic and reused asphalt. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said using recyclables to resurface roads was a great way to reduce waste.

he Geddes Crescent resurfacing is among a number of projects Wyndham’s Asset Rehabilitation Team (WART) has trialled in recent months, to resurface and repair roads using materials that would have otherwise ended up in landill. WART has also trialled a selection of road resurfacing treatments using reclaimed plastics, rubber, steel mill slag and asphalt along Dunnings Road, Point Cook. At the moment, the council is trialling a crack-sealing product, which contains waste plastics and tyre crumb, to repair roads in Williams Landing. Cr Marcus said while it was still early in the trial, the product was showing promise as an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional crack-sealing products. “Crack-sealing forms an important part of council’s road maintenance activities

and extends the longevity of roads by illing up cracked surfaces and preventing water damage,” Cr Marcus said. “his helps protect our environment by reusing waste materials and avoiding early replacement of our roads, and is another

A 55-metre-long overpass has been installed at Leakes Road in Truganina, the second in a series of three bridges being built along the Federation Trail. he Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the Federation Trail project, part of the state government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade, would improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians. A similar overpass was installed at Dohertys Road in Laverton North during February, and a third overpass will be installed at the Palmers Road and Sayers Road intersection in Williams Landing later this year. All three overpass bridges will open to cyclists and pedestrians later this year. “We know cyclist numbers are growing in the west and the new Federation Trail overpasses are all part of our work to give people riding a continuous and safe journey into the city,” Ms Allan said. Eight major road projects in the west, carried out under the Western Roads Upgrade, are expected to be completed next year. Almost 80 per cent of the upgrade’s road rehabilitation program has been inished, with 29 of 37 roads now repaired or resurfaced. Education City appeal lodged By Alesha Capone he consortium seeking to build a $31 billion education city in Werribee has appealed a Supreme Court decision, which ruled the state government did not have to divulge why it pulled the pin on the project’s Expressions of Interest process. As previously reported by Star Weekly, the Supreme Court issued its decision on the Australian Education City’s (AEC) case on May 20. Five years ago, the AEC was selected as the preferred bidder to develop more than 400

hectares of the East Werribee Employment Precinct. he AEC proposed to build a commercial, educational, retail and mixed-use site including a university, research centre, secondary school, indigenous community centre and heritage park. he education city would also have been home to 70,000 people. However, last year the state government stopped the Expressions of Interest process for the site and has refused to reveal why. he AEC went to the Supreme Court in February seeking a declaration that the decision to end the tender process was invalid, or an order quashing the decision.

It also sought orders which would compel the state government to provide reasons for ending the process. But last month, Supreme Court Associate Justice Melissa Daly dismissed the AEC’s summons. Associate Justice Daly said there were “negligible prospects” of the state government being able to produce further information “which would cause me to alter my view that AEC’s claims in this proceeding have no real prospects of success”. At the time, AEC chairman Bill Zheng told Star Weekly that the consortium was not asking

for money or compensation, but was asking for an opportunity for the state to reconsider its decision. Earlier this month, the AEC lodged a notice of appeal against the Supreme Court’s May 20 decision, which named the Victorian Planning Authority, the state of Victoria, Minister for Priority Precincts and Assistant Treasurer as respondents. he notice of appeal, prepared by First Port Legal, said that Associate Justice Daly “erred” in inding that the AEC’s claim had no real prospect of success within a certain meaning of a section of the Civil Procedure Act 2010.

crucial role in creating jobs. “We’re seeing more businesses invest in the west,” he said. “In terms of space and value, the CBD and fringe simply can’t compete. “With high-proile corporates and many small-to-medium-sized businesses already basing themselves here, Williams Landing has emerged as an appealing alternative. “Due to the impact of COVID-19, we have been speaking to businesses who are looking to restructure their oice spaces to low rise oices with the ability to use secure swipe card stair access in addition to lits. “Some are looking to set up hub or satellite oices where their employees can work closer to home, with secure parking and transport

links to the CBD for meetings.” Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan, who toured the Williams Landing building, said that when it comes to investing, there is a high level of conidence in Wyndham. “Council is committed to ensuring a robust local economy and that’s why the completion of this building is a perfect reminder that Wyndham is open for business and investment,” Cr Gilligan said. Juanru Sun, from Sun Accountant, bought into Cedar Wood’s irst strata building in Williams Landing in 2017. He has since achieved a rental return of seven per cent and unit price growth of seven to 10 per cent.

Five Wyndham community groups and organisations will receive $5000 in grants from Stockland. he developer last week announced the recipients of the annual Stockland CARE Grants program, awarding $276,000 to community groups and not-for-proit organisations across the nation. In Wyndham, Stockland Point Cook has awarded $4000 to Werribee Auskick, Wyndham Little Buddies Toy Library, Mama Destiny and Uniting Wyndham. In addition, Stockland’s Tarneit Skies Retirement Village has given a grant of $1000 to the Iramoo Community Centre. he Stockland CARE Grants initiative is run throughout communities located near a Stockland retail, residential or retirement living site. he program, now in its seventh year, has distributed more than $1.7 million in funding to more than 1500 local community groups. Stockland’s national manager of group sustainability, Amy Hogan, said: “Stockland is proud to once again lend a hand to hundreds of community groups across Australia. “We wholeheartedly recognise the contribution that these groups make to their community every single day. “We’re pleased to continue our support of local organisations whose great work, dedication and commitment are an essential part of helping any community to thrive.” Earlier this year, Stockland pledged a donation of $500,000 to the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal (FRRR) and other organisations supporting the recovery and rebuilding eforts ater the Australian bushires. Thomas Carr, community connect Recent uncertain times and subsequent government restrictions have had a large impact on families and businesses. homas Carr College has extended a helping hand beyond the school gates. Principal Craig Holmes says the college sees this as an opportunity to connect and support the community. he college has created a new Community Business Register, where partners, families and alumni of the school community can register and promote their business within the school community. Staf at the college also banded together to help local primary schools, with canteen staf making and providing lunches for pupils and staf who remained on site during COVID-19 lockdown. Embracing innovation in challenging times Marian College is a progressive Kildare Ministries Catholic School for girls in Sunshine West. Principal Ray Pisani says the school community started the year well prepared to build on growth and achievements. “Our VCE results were strong and, in 2019, for the second consecutive year, we had been recognised as a high-growth school based on NAPLAN results,” Mr Pisani says. “Little did we know that in 2020, COVID-19 would require society to go into isolation. Our school’s ability to move to remote learning quickly and adjust to an unexpected environment highlights our strengths of innovation and planning. “In response to the pandemic, our teachers worked tirelessly and collaboratively to prepare high-quality student learning programs. Teachers have been creative, adapted and learnt new skills to ensure that student learning, underpinned by high expectations, continued.” Mr Pisani commends students too for displaying agility in moving to remote learning, taking responsibility for their learning in a new environment, away from friends and teachers. “his was only possible because our families have adapted to enable students to learn from home. We are enormously grateful to our whole Marian College Community for their support, efort and care over this time,” he says. “In some ways, closing of schools and the sudden pivot to remote learning was like a real-life experiment. Whilst there were challenges, it was also a period of incredible growth and achievement.” Marian College is now honouring this by capturing evidence and data from this period through surveys, focus groups and video diaries. Help to navigate life after separation At Relationship Matters, professional and supportive counsellors and mediators are ready to help people work through the details and issues that can follow a separation. Mediators understand the dificulty and stress couples are often already facing at this point, and aim to keep the process simple and ind the best outcome for all involved. As a irst step, an initial intake appointment is made with the mediator who will provide information and resources that can assist people to make good decisions. Anjali turned to Relationship Matters on the advice of a family lawyer, when her relationship ended. She felt she had hit rock bottom and she was locked in conlict with her former partner. They couldn’t agree on anything and needed to work through how they were going to support their children and make payments such as the mortgage and school fees. The mediator was able to help them reach agreements about how they could parent their children after separation, and helped them resolve outstanding inancial and property matters. The pair have now both moved on inancially and have a plan for how they communicate and resolve differences in the future. Cath Tregillis, Executive Manager of Dispute Resolution and Education at Relationship Matters says Anjali’s story is common and it can really make a big difference if couples can commit to mediation early in their separation. “Even though it can be a very raw time for lots of people, if they can come to agreements early on without too much legal involvement, and have plans for communication, it can make a really huge difference moving forward,” Cath says.
