Time to sweat After three months off, gyms across the west have reopened their doors this week. Theresa Stefanovski, who runs CS Fitness in Caroline Springs, said it was good to welcome locals back into the gym for a workout after an extended break. “We were doing really well, but unfortunately, like everyone else we had to close our doors,” Ms Stefanovski said. “We’ve had people contacting us all through the shut down asking when we were opening up again, so it’s good to inally have people back. “People have been hanging out for this.” While the gym is normally open 24/7, the current restrictions will only allow the gym to operate during staffed hours, which will likely be from early morning until 9pm. There will also still be some restrictions in place on the number of people allowed in the gym. “We’ll only be able to have 20 people in there at a time, and we’ll have to monitor that really closely because we won’t have a booking system,” Ms Stefanovksi said. “On top of that we’ll have extra hand sanitizer around the gym, people will have to bring their own water.” Ewen McRae

Double digit crime rise By Ewen McRae Crime in Melton has spiked again, with the latest crime statistics showing an increase double the state rate. While igures from the Crime Statistics Agency showed a 6.1 per cent increase statewide in the year to March, 2020, Melton experienced a jump of 12.2 per cent. Melton and surrounding suburbs were the biggest contributors to the jump, with the suburbs of Melton (1546 ofences), Melton South

(1518) and Melton West (1437) experiencing the most ofences. het ofences saw the biggest jump (4549 ofences), with almost 1000 more instances in the reporting period compared to the previous 12 months. Melton local area commander Zorka Dunstan said the high population growth in the region was the main contributor to the jump, with opportunistic crime in particular on the rise. “Our population is growing, and we can’t deny that,” Ms Dunstan said. “We have seen a big jump in petrol

drive-ofs in the past 12 months, so that does account for a number of the thets in the area. “We’ve got our troops going out there and working hard, but even looking for hotspots is hard because it does look very random. I asked for some mapping to be done a while back and it came back with dots all over the place, so it is diicult to target speciic areas.” Assault ofences also jumped from 991 ofences in 2019 to 1115 in the latest igures, while instances of stalking and harassment also jumped from 302 to 469 ofences.

Despite the rise, the overall igures are still lower than the high water marks of 2016-17, and there is an expectation that igures will improve in the next release period as COVID-19 lockdowns saw a drop in crime across the state. “I would anticipate a drop, because we do know that there was less crime and it wasn’t as busy during the lockdown,” Ms Dunstan said. “he challenge now is as restrictions ease to deal with the rise that will come with that and make sure we’re targeting the areas of most harm to the community.”

Police step up gang ight By Tate Papworth Police will lood the streets of the western suburbs in a bid to quash gang tensions following the stabbing murder of 15-year-old Solomone Taufeulungaki last Tuesday. Solomone was outside Brimbank Shopping Centre at Deer Park when he was allegedly approached by a group of boys. He was stabbed and died at the scene. Six boys, aged between 13 and 16 have been charged with violent disorder and afray. No one has been charged over the death. Tensions lared ater the incident and a police oicer was taken to hospital ater a brawl involving about 30 people broke out near where the stabbing occured.

On hursday, Victoria Police North West Commander Tim Hansen said the street gang problem in the west was rising. “We have deployed extra resources for a considerable time now across Melbourne’s west in relation to what is an ongoing gang issue for us,” he said. “We are acutely aware of the risk these street gangs present to us.” Commander Hansen said signiicant rises in crime statistics was in some instances driven by street gangs. He said police would step up their presence right across the western suburbs in a bid to stop any further violence. “Our thinking isn’t just limited to Brimbank and Melton, but we’re incorporating our plan right across the western suburbs,” he said. “Since Tuesday we’ve deployed extra police out across Melbourne’s west. “You would’ve seen mounted branch police, our public order response team, PSO, transit police all deployed on the ground … and that will continue over the next couple of weeks

“If these kids or street gangs want to come back into the western suburbs and get involved in a ight over coming days and coming weeks, we will be there waiting for them and they will be held to account,” Commander Hansen said.

Concern over Brimbank virus surge Melton and Moorabool are almost COVID-19 free, with igures last week showing just two active case across the two municipalities. Melton had two active cases of the virus as of Sunday, with 46 cases detected throughout the pandemic, while the three positive cases detected within Moorabool have all recovered. But neighbouring Brimbank may be subjected to a “local lockdown” as the state government scrambles to avoid a second wave of COVID-19. he municipality has been lagged as a virus “hot spot“ with another outbreak identiied in Keilor Downs. he move would mean all residents in Brimbank would be conined to their homes. Residents would still be permitted to shop for essentials, go to the doctor, exercise, or go about work if it is not possible to do so from home. “I cannot rule out the notion of ‘hot spots’ where we see substantial community transmission being the subject of lockdowns,” premier Daniel Andrews said. “It may be the case in the days ahead that we have to move to those local government areas or suburbs where some of this activity has gone on, where the data tells us a very clear story that there are extra cases.” Victoria’s chief health oicer, Professor Brett Sutton, said it was important that people did not get complacent as restrictions eased. “We are still seeing transmission in households and other settings. Sports centre plans ticked off By Ewen McRae Moorabool council has ticked of plans for a new indoor sports and aquatic facility in Bacchus Marsh. Council approved the master plan for a new facility on Taverner Street at a special meeting last week, allowing the facility to proceed to the design stage of development. Plans include a four-court stadium, indoor bowls, indoor pool, kiosk and administration facilities, and car parking.

While the plans received broad support from council, councillor Tom Sullivan objected on the basis of the large cost involved. he project is expected to cost more than $13 million. Cr Sullivan said $11.5 million would come from ratepayers and borrowings and he was

concerned it would rob communities outside of Bacchus Marsh of future projects. “his is not an equitable afair that we embark on something that’s going to carry an $11.5 million debt going forward, and also robs the other communities in the shire the opportunity to get their projects up. Yet they’ll still be expected to pay the rates and carry their proportion of the share of the repayments.” However Cr Tonia Dudzik said the Bacchus Marsh community had been waiting for a facility like this for long enough.

“he community has been waiting over 20 years for the possibility of a heated indoor pool, and this is a step towards that,” she said. “It’s time that we commence that process, and also the basketball stadium is badly needed in Bacchus Marsh. “With regards to funding, we’ll be looking to our federal ministers for possible grants. “his is only the beginning. If you don’t plan to build something it will never be delivered and it’s time we started delivering on this project.”

Fight for Millenium Man Sunshine’s much-loved Millennium Man statue still stands … for now. Last week Vicinity Centres, the operator of Sunshine Marketplace, conirmed it planned to remove the statue because of safety issues and costs associated with restoring it. But signiicant public backlash has brought about a brief reprieve. A post on the popular Millennium Man Menagerie Facebook page imploring people to voice their displeasure at the plan, reached almost 100,000 people. Sources close to those trying to save the statue say that while the current incarnation may be beyond repair, a bronzed replica, designed to stand the test of time, could be a itting alternative. Local resident Dinesh Jayasuriya met with Vicinity last week and said early discussions were promising. “It was a good start – Vicinity agreed to fund a 3D scan and to store the Millennium

Man’s belt and globe. With the scan and some parts stored it will make it easier to restore or replicate him. “From here we’ll consult the community and get an idea of what people want to see happen.” It is hoped that the signiicant public interest would result in a successful crowdfunding campaign to save the statue. “Locals have a strong connection and history with Millennium Man,” Mr Jayasuriya said. “It might be because they interacted with him or climbed him when they were kids. Or maybe because they see that towering igure from the train and know they are home.” Mr Jayasuriya said future placement of the statue also needed to be discussed. “Ideally we’d like him to be installed on the Hampshire Road side of the Sunshine Marketplace property. his way he will be a more prominent part of Sunshine CBD.”

Football restart gets green light By Ewen McRae Footy will return to the western suburbs this year, with lited coronavirus restrictions paving the way for community sport to resume. he Victorian Football League and Essendon District Football League have both announced a start date for their 2020 season, while a decision on the Western Region Football League is expected this week. he VFL season will begin on August 1, with an eight team competition over a seven round season plus inals.

Werribee and Williamstown will both take to the park in 2020, and Tigers president Martin Carter said they can’t wait. “We have known for weeks that this season would be diferent and it is,” Mr Carter said. “But we are committed as a football club and a community leader to bring the best football and match experience we can to our members, sponsors, supporters and everyone who has been hanging out for some on-ield action.” Seagulls president Clint Rippon said they always remained hopeful that the season could be salvaged.

“When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and postponed our VFL season, it seemed there was very little chance we would be playing football this year,” he said. “Despite this outlook we remained optimistic and pursued all avenues in the event that a season could be salvaged. Today’s announcement is incredibly exciting for our club, players, members, supporters, staf, corporate partners and the wider Williamstown community.” he EDFL has so far only announced provisional dates for its season start, with junior boys and girls football to resume on July 19.

Division one and two, the thirds competition, and women’s open age football will start a week later on July 25. he Premier division will start on August 1, with a nine-round season, plus inals. he Premier grand inal is currently slated for October 17. he women’s netball season will kick of on July 25 as well. he league said the dates would remain provisional until government and AFL Victoria return-to-play protocols, including those relating to crowd attendance, are inalised.

United ready to return With its inaugural A-League season already a memorable one, Western United will get a chance to push for a debut inals appearance when the season resumes next month. Sitting sixth on the table when the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, United had already caused plenty of shocks in its irst season in the league. It will take centre stage when the season resumes on July 16, taking on hometown rivals Melbourne United in the irst game of the resumption round, kicking of a monster 27 games in 28 days for the league before inals. Football Federation Australia said it is exploring a number of ixture options due to changing restrictions across the country, but all of them have United and Victory kicking things of at AAMI Park. United chief executive Chris Pehlivanis said it was great to have games on the horizon, and thanked fans for sticking by the club.

“We are thrilled that football is returning,” Mr Pehlivanis said. “It has been 101 days since we last played and I know everyone in the Western United family can’t wait to see the team back out on the pitch as we push for a inals spot in our debut season. “We’ve shown Victory and their fans twice already this season that the boys from the west have inally arrived – and we are ready to do it again. “We all know that the pandemic is far from over, so again, I thank everyone in the Western United family for their patience. “Not even the best iction author could have penned this plot to our inaugural season – what a journey we’ve all been on; strap in tight – it’s going to be a fast and furious inish.” United is in a inals place, just goal diference ahead of Adelaide United with a game in hand. Arrest over stolen plates

Police patrolling Mt Cottrell Road on June 14 arrested a 41-year-old Rockbank man after he was allegedly caught driving a stolen car with stolen number plates attached. Police said the man, who was driving a silver Mercedes, attempted to evade police but lost control of the car at the intersection of Alfred Road. He led on foot but was arrested a short distance away. Police said the number plates were stolen from a Mercedes from Craigieburn several days earlier, while the car was wanted in connection with a number of cigarette burglaries in the north-western suburbs. Police said stolen property and an amount of MDMA was found in the car.

School cash boost Toolern Vale and District Primary School pupils will soon have a new and improved school. he school will receive $105,000 for high priority maintenance works on it’s Shelter in Place building and $50,000 for high priority maintenance works across the school, including loor repairs, painting, wall and window repairs and surface treatments. he school is among 78 schools across the state to share in $5.94 million in funding as part of the state government’s Planned Maintenance Program. A new evaluation system was put in place in 2018 to provide more information on the condition of school infrastructure to create a

timely and targeted allocation of funding. Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas said the funding ensured existing buildings at Victoria’s schools were safe, modern and properly maintained. “his investment in Toolern Vale and District Primary School is about making sure all of our schools are well maintained and safe so students learn in the best possible environment,” she said. “Toolern Vale and District Primary School is a fantastic school so it is wonderful news that they are among the schools set to share in this vital maintenance funding.”

Fire statistics raise the alarm By Jessica Micallef Fireighters were called to nearly four house ires a day, on average, last winter. According to the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), ireighters responded to a total of 383 residential ires, mostly caused by cooking. Electrical mishaps and heating systems were the next highest causes. he MFB is calling on Victorians to put a freeze on “preventable” house ires. MFB acting deputy chief oicer community resilience Adam Dalrymple said winter was

traditionally a busy time for ireighters. “We want to see people become more proactive and develop safe ire habits,” he said. “If you are not maintaining household items such as electrical blankets, heaters and kitchen appliances, or if you are using them incorrectly, you are putting yourself and the people you live with at risk.” Mr Dalrymple said residents should avoid charging phones or electrical devices on sot surfaces such as bedding or a couch because it could spark a ire. “Never overload power boards or electrical

Kairouz resigns from ministry By Ewen McRae Local MP Marlene Kairouz has stepped away from her ministerial portfolio, as the fallout from a Labor Party branch stacking scandal continues. Ms Kairouz represents the Kororoit electorate, which includes Caroline Springs, Albanvale and parts of Deer Park and St Albans, and held the suburban development portfolio until her resignation this morning. Despite Premier Daniel Andrews standing

Help for most vulnerable he Vietnamese community has rallied behind its most vulnerable. While essential services have continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many have been unable to utilise them. Vietnamese Community in Australia: Victorian chapter deputy vice president Dinh Tran said his community was particularly vulnerable. “We’ve has a number of members from the Vietnamese community asking us for help,” he said. “Usually we help them out with things like translating, health issues, driving laws and medical information but that’s been a challenge with restrictions in place. “Even things like illing out forms and getting food has been a bit of a challenge for the older members of our community.” With a need identiied, the Salvation Army and Vietnamese Community in Australia: Victorian chapter compiled a list of names and began working on care packages.

“We deliver to around 50 people, which takes several staf and volunteers to complete,” Mr Tran said. “We meet at Sunshine, then allocate our drop of points, covering St Albans Deer park, Footscray, Flemington and other areas across the west.” he packs include rice, noodles, milk hand sanitiser and other essential items. “We did a drop of about three months ago and this one makes our second,” Mr Tran said. “We’re hoping it’s the last one we have to do and this thing is brought under control quickly.” While hopeful the pandemic will end soon, Mr Tran encouraged anyone who needs support to contact the Vietnamese Community in Australia: Victorian chapter. Driver licence testing resumes By Goya Dmytryshchak Driver licence testing has resumed with more than 200 staf employed to meet the coronavirus backlog. Tests were suspended on March 25, putting on hold more than 100,000 licensing appointments including 55,000 drive tests. Learner permit and licence testing will proceed in stages at all VicRoads’ sites, with those forced to postpone due to restrictions given irst priority.

Six new temporary testing sites will be established in coming months to increase capacity, with locations yet to be determined. Minister for Roads, Road Safety and the TAC, Jaala Pulford said the chief health oicer had outlined a range of measures to allow drive testing. “It will take a little bit of time to get through the list of those waiting to take a test,” she said. “We’ve got a plan for doing this safely and as quickly as possible and are grateful for everyone’s continued patience.”

Safety measures taken include cleaning of vehicles used in tests, “proper comprehensive hygiene” for applicants, instructors and testing oicers, and disposable seat covers. Australian Services Union secretary Lisa Darmanin said additional safety measures included no more than three people in a test vehicle and the wearing of surgical masks and non-contact temperature testing for at least the next four weeks. “he Australian Services Union has been consistent that drive tests should not

recommence until it was safe for VicRoads workers and the public,” she said. “Reopening drive tests with these safety measures is good news for VicRoads staf and for everyone wanting to get a drivers licence.” Since restrictions in March, VicRoads approved more than 2700 licence tests for people who would have faced undue hardship. his exemption will continue to be available. Heavy vehicle testing and motorcycle tests will continue as they have been during the past two months.

Mortgage stress soars in west By Alesha Capone Residents of three postcodes located in Melbourne’s west are among the areas facing the highest mortgage stress in the nation, according to a new report. Research and consulting irm Digital Finance Analytics (DFA) has released its mortgage stress data for May, which ranked the 3037 postcode (which includes Delahey, Hillside and Sydenham) as experiencing the second-highest amount of mortgage stress in Australia. he 3030 postcode (Werribee, Werribee

South, Point Cook, Quandong and Derrimut) was ranked fourth on the list, with 3029 (Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina) placing ith. According to the report, between 6000 to 7000 households in each of these postcodes are experiencing mortgage stress. he 3350 postcode (Ballarat and surrounds) ranked as having the highest amount of mortgage stress in Australia, with more than 7000 households experiencing mortgage stress. DFA surveyed 52,000 households across the nation within a year, and used mortgage industry reports, company information and

banking and economic analysis to calculate the igures. he report considers households to be in severe mortgage stress if their gross income – such as salary, pensions, interest and dividends – is 10 per cent or more below what they spend on tax, mortgage repayments, other housing costs, food, childcare, and school fees every month. According to the report, about 1.4 million households across the nation were experiencing mortgage stress in May – equating to 37.5 per cent of all households in Australia. In contrast, the report stated 38 per cent

of households experienced mortgage stress during April. he report stated that between April and May, some households found relief through the federal government’s JobKeeper payments, returning to work post-pandemic or reinancing to a lower mortgage repayment rate. Last month, Uniting Vic.Tas emergency relief lead Cathryn Ryan told Star Weekly that increasing numbers of people who had lost their jobs due to COVID-19 were seeking emergency assistance.

Supercharge your winter snacks Dietitian Sharon Natoli shares her tips to keep snacking on track this winter using Australian Eggs. With winter upon us, it’s important we are fueling our bodies with the right nutrients to help us focus, keep our immune system healthy and our energy levels high. Many people are also still working from home, and while it’s become a familiar routine for most, easy access to a full fridge when the weather gets colder can sometimes mean snacking more frequently, and on food we wouldn’t choose when in our normal work routine. Australian Eggs has teamed up with Dietitian and Author Sharon Natoli, to share her tips on how to help manage your food intake and snacking through winter, including the snacks that can help supercharge your immune system. Eat regularly: When it comes to eating, it helps to stay in a regular routine. Plan to eat healthy snacks and meals around every 3-4 hours. Eating regularly helps manage hunger which in turn helps manage not only how much you eat, but the type of foods you choose. he hungrier you are, the more likely it is that you will eat more, eat quickly, and be less intentional about your choices. Choose foods to boost your immunity: In the current environment and with winter approaching, choose foods that are high in immunity boosting nutrients, like protein, iron, selenium, vitamin A and vitamin D. Boiled eggs are great to keep in the fridge as a handy, natural ‘protein ball’ and contain good amounts of these key nutrients so are a great inclusion as a healthy snack. Vitamin C is also key to a strong immune system so choose fruit and vegetables to snack on, like vitamin C-rich red capsicum, kiwi fruit, citrus like oranges, grapefruit and mandarins, guava and strawberries. Choose energy boosting snacks: A good way to get energy from your snacks is to combine foods that contain both carbohydrates, for the energy our brain needs to think, and protein or ibre, to have the energy last for longer. Foods that provide B vitamins, iron and magnesium are also great choices. Try chopped egg on wholegrain crackers, nuts and fruit together, or a savoury muin (for more ideas see the accompanying egg recipes). Plan ahead: Just as you might plan your meals, it’s also useful to plan your snacks. Write out a list of ideas that include both savoury and sweet options. Shop for these, or the ingredients you need to make them, and that way you will have choices readily available when you need them to satisfy your palate. Cultivate a curious palate: By sticking to the usual suspects that we eat day in and day out, we can get bored and disinterested. To build joy into food and eating, each week aim to try something new to snack on. his also helps expand your palate, opening a whole new world of food experiences. If you have children who are fussy eaters, it’s a great way to model behaviours that also encourage them to be curious about food and explore new lavours. Make it nourishing: A good question to ask yourself before you eat is ‘is this choice nourishing me?’. Make a decision to only eat foods that nourish you – whether that’s nourishing your body, mind or your soul. Create your own deinition of what this means for you. Share your intentions: Accountability empowers action so share your snacking intentions with others in your household. Take snack breaks together and use the experience to create connection and conversation. Indulgence in smaller portions: Research shows there is a point of fatigue when it comes to the enjoyment of rich foods, for example, chocolate or cakes and biscuits. If we eat too much of these types of foods for example, there is a point where our experience turns from pleasurable to sickly and we stop enjoying them. To help prevent this, serve small portions of these types of foods. Once you have inished eating, tune in to how your body is feeling and ask yourself if you feel satisied. If so, move on with the rest of your day.

EGG TOPPERS 4 WAYS Prep & cook: 10 mins Serves: 1 ITALIAN: 1 poached egg 2 teaspoons cashew pesto 3 cherry tomatoes Pinch basil leaves, shredded Pesto: 1 bunch basil, leaves picked ½ cup cashews 1 cup olive oil 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon lemon juice Sea Salt and black pepper INDONESIAN: 1 egg, fried Cucumber, sliced Zucchini, sliced and blanched Bok choy, trimmed and blanched Chilli lakes Sea salt and black pepper Peanut satay: ¼ cup smooth peanut butter 2 tablespoons almond milk 2 teaspoons lime juice 1 ½ teaspoons fresh chilli, inely chopped AUSSIE: 2 eggs, whisked and cooked to an omelette or scrambled 1 tablespoon olive oil Broccolini Large handful baby spinach ¼ avocado Fresh dill and parsley leaves Sea salt and black pepper JAPANESE: 1 egg, soft or hard boiled as preferred zucchini, shaved with a vegetable peeler into ine ribbons 20g baby spinach 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds ¼ avocado, sliced Sea salt and black pepper Miso butter: 1 tablespoon (25g) butter ½ teaspoon white miso paste

Method ITALIAN: 1. To make pesto: blitz all ingredients in food processor until uniform. Store in airtight container in fridge for up to 1 week. 2. To serve: spread pesto over toast, top with poached eggs, cherry tomatoes and basil leaves. Season with sea salt and black pepper and serve. INDONESIAN: 1. To make peanut satay: place all ingredients in a small saucepan on low heat, whisk together over heat for about 5 minutes or until smooth. Place in airtight container in fridge for up to 2 weeks. Heat slightly before using. 2. To serve: place blanched zucchini slices and bok choy on toast with cucumber. Top with fried egg, drizzle with peanut satay to taste, sprinkle with chilli lakes and serve with fresh coriander if desired.

AUSSIE: 1. For the greens: add olive oil to a medium frypan, then saute broccolini and baby spinach for 3-4 minutes or until tender and wilted. Season with sea salt and black pepper. 2. To serve: place sauteed greens on toast, top with omelette or scrambled eggs, avocado and fresh herbs. Season with sea salt and black pepper and serve. JAPANESE: 1. To make the miso butter: melt the butter and whisk in miso until smooth. 2. To serve: saute zucchini and baby spinach in a small frypan, spread toast with miso butter then place veggies on top, followed by boiled egg and avocado. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, season with sea salt and black pepper and serve.

PIE MAKER EGG HACK: CARAMELISED ONION, TOMATO AND THYME TARTS Ingredients ½ cup pumpkin, roughly chopped in 1cm dices ½ cup zucchini, roughly chopped in 1cm dices ½ cup spring onions, sliced 1 large handful baby spinach leaves 1 cup skim milk 2 eggs A pinch pepper to taste 2 cup wholemeal lour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds Low fat cream cheese, to serve Method 1. Preheat pie maker. Wait for the green READY light to go on. 2. Meanwhile, using a rolling pin, roll and latten bread slices. Using a 10cm cutter, cut rounds from bread slices. 3. Whisk eggs and milk together in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Spray pie maker with oil. Press bread rounds into pie maker holes to create cases. Divide relish, tomatoes and half the thyme among bread cases. Carefully pour over egg mixture. Scatter with cheese. Close lid and cook for 8-10 minutes or until golden and set. 5. Remove from pie maker. Serve scattered with remaining thyme.

Tip: Be careful not to drizzle any egg mixture under or on the outer sides of the bread case. It will cook quickly and may burn.

Embracing innovation in challenging times Marian College is a progressive Kildare Ministries Catholic School for girls in Sunshine West. Our school’s ability to move to remote learning quickly and adjust to an unexpected environment highlights our strengths of innovation and planning. “In response to the pandemic, our teachers worked tirelessly and collaboratively to prepare high-quality student learning programs. Teachers have been creative, adapted and learnt new skills to ensure that student learning, underpinned by high expectations, continued.” Mr Pisani commends students too for displaying agility in moving to remote learning, taking responsibility for their learning in a new environment, away from friends and teachers. “his was only possible because our families have adapted to enable students to learn from home. We are enormously grateful to our whole Marian College Community for their support, efort and care over this time,” he says. “In some ways, closing of schools and the sudden pivot to remote learning was like a real-life experiment. Whilst there were challenges, it was also a period of incredible growth and achievement.” Marian College is now honouring this by capturing evidence and data from this period through surveys, focus groups and video diaries. From this, it will be decided what technologies and new ways of working are woven back into the future learning program.

Parents are Heathdale’s proud partners Principal of Heathdale Christian College’s Melton campus, Yvonne Harvey says it has been a pleasure to partner with the parent community during the recent challenging times. She says the overwhelming support given to the school and staf won’t be forgotten. “During the COVID-19 crisis, parents experienced the highs and lows of the remote learning mode,” Ms Harvey says. “Watching on proudly as your primary-aged child outlined the narrative of their favourite book for show ‘n’ tell to their online classmates, that’s a heart-warming feeling. It was also gratifying to help them work through a tricky maths problem and see their practise pay of. Hearing a recorder pipe up in the background of your work meeting ... it’s a bit tricky!” hese days, the balance has been restored with all students back on campus, and Ms Harvey says the Heathdale community keeps praying the virus remains under control. “Much of the post-remote learning, education-speciic chatter has centred around two things; how students have grown in resilience, and what schools can implement from the experience,” Ms Harvey says. “We’re doing this, too. It would be negligent to ignore the fact that, by and large, our students have risen to a new level of self-management, and that our teaching staf are now so savvy with video they could rival the output of a YouTube vlogger.” While Heathdale Christian College had a successful transition both into and out of the remote learning mode, Ms Harvey says there’s one relationship that was crucial to that success: the partnership with parents. Parents as partners is a foundational pillar at the college, stemming right from the theological statements that recognise parents are ultimately responsible for the “care of their children”.

“During the time we have students in our care, we act as delegates for parents in a partnership aimed at bringing out the potential in those students,” Ms Harvey says. “World-renowned education researcher behind the Visible Learning system used at Heathdale, Professor Hattie, coined a term for it, ‘he Parental Engagement Efect’, inding “Parents need to hold high expectations for their children

and schools need to work in partnership with parents to make their expectations appropriately high and challenging” (Hattie, 2009, p.70). “Whether it was working together to help children navigate online lessons, getting feedback on the balance of curriculum, even getting a little jealous of the hot chocolates and bacon and egg muin breakfasts we could
