Fall in love with colour It’s easy to be impressed by the images you see in magazines and on design sites – the challenge is knowing how to make them work in your own home. To address this common frustration, Dulux has partnered with interior stylist Julia Green to guide you step-by-step on how to give your rooms an ‘on trend’ makeover. “he real trick is looking for the ideas behind the images and inding ways to make them work in your own home,” says Julia. “If you’re looking to liven a room, are short on time and don’t want to spend a fortune, paint can be your best friend, allowing you to breathe new life into tired spaces with minimal cost and efort. “Add in the right sot furnishings or paint your existing accessories and you’ve got an up-to-date look in no time.” Faced with a bland, white bedroom, Julia took inspiration from Dulux’s Repair palette to give it some much-needed personality and interest. “While it had lovely features such as wooden loorboards, white walls and shutters, it was crying out for some character,” Julia says. “When it comes to choosing colour, I believe it’s the emotional connection we make that is the most important thing – perhaps even more important than how we dress a space. I knew the deep greenish blues and hints of cinnamon would be perfect for creating a warm, welcoming feel in this bedroom.” Julia looked for easy ways to incorporate doses of colour in paint, accessories and sot furnishings. “I chose an artwork for the back wall that was illed with beautiful, earthy tones, all present in the Dulux Repair palette, and used this to inform the rest of my colour choices. a bold hue for the back wall to give the room depth. I layered this up with touches of rich green by painting the existing bedside-table drawer with Dulux Aquanamel in Plasticine and adding lush velvet sot furnishings and tall potted plants on either side of the bed. “I’m a irm believer that every room’s scheme needs an element of surprise to really bring it to life – here, I painted a sot terracotta shade on

the mirror rim and Auburn Flair on the base of a ceramic pot, which contrast beautifully with all the blues and greens. he ceiling, trims and other walls were already painted in a warm white. “A medley of interesting textures inish the look – a large blue tonal rug, touches of raw timber, velvet and slubby linens.” he result is a warm, rejuvenating bedroom.

Yogi not your average dog By Alesha Capone For former Werribee policeman Ron Fenton, his assistance dog Yogi is not only his best friend, but a life-saver. Mr Fenton joined Victoria Police more than four decades ago. In 1984, he was shot in the head ater pursuing a man who had murdered a security guard in Clayton. Mr Fenton survived and returned to duty, joining Werribee police in 1996. About four years ago, Mr Fenton developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In 2017, Defence Community Dogs donated Yogi, a Labrador who has been trained and accredited as a PTSD assistance dog, to Mr Fenton. Mr Fenton said Yogi had helped reduce his reliance on medication and psychology visits. Yogi can also sense when Mr Fenton is having a nightmare and puts his paw on a pressure pad to turn on a lamp, to wake Mr Fenton. “He’s an amazing dog,” Mr Fenton said. “He’s just a life-saver, all the way through.” About three years ago, Mr Fenton launched a legal case against WorkSafe, Victoria Police and insurance company Gallaghar Bassett, for refusing to fund the cost of Yogi’s food and veterinary bills. Mr Fenton started legal proceedings ater WorkSafe rejected his claim for the insurance company to pay for Yogi’s needs, as a legitimate medical expense related to Mr Fenton’s workplace-induced PTSD. Mr Fenton and his legal team, including lawyer Kathy Wilson from Melbourne Injury Lawyers, won an out-of-court settlement last month. “I’m absolutely elated, I’m happy and very glad the battle is inally over,” Mr Fenton said. He described the out-of-court settlement as “a better deal than I ever dreamed of”. But Mr Fenton said the most important thing was that the case had set a legal precedent, which means that emergency services workers – such those in the CFA, paramedics or ireighters – who have a WorkCover-accepted PTSD claim related to their employment, will be able to claim expenses related to accredited assistance dogs. Mr Fenton said during his 18 years in Werribee police, he had worked closely with other emergency services, and had wanted to achieve a win for everyone in the ield. “It was always my intention to make sure it

(the legal battle) wasn’t just me, but for people in the past and people in the future as well,” he said. Mr Fenton said the past month was “a big one” for him. Land earmarked for ire station he CFA has identiied land to build the new Truganina ire station. In a response to an inquiry by Star Weekly, the CFA last week released a statement that it was working with a developer and council before the land acquisition could be inalised. “Once land has been purchased, CFA will consult with the brigade on the design of the station,” the statement said. “It is anticipated that construction will commence in 2021.”

Almost three years ago, the state government announced $7.5 million in funding to acquire land for, and to build, new ire stations in Truganina and Wyndham Vale. According to CFA brigade response times for October to December last year, the Tarneit station was the second-busiest in the state, responding to 294 call-outs in the three months. he data showed that within the Tarneit region – which includes the Truganina, Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing brigades – less than 60 per cent of emergency response times met CFA targets.

Tribute to former councillor Wyndham council has paid tribute to former councillor and Victoria Police oicer Peter Gibbons, who passed away last week. Mayor Josh Gilligan spoke about Peter’s contribution to the Wyndham municipality, at a council meeting on Tuesday. Cr Gilligan said that Peter and his wife Robyn moved to Wyndham in 1974, where they raised their children. “A strong believer in community and family, Peter was committed to public service – having served 43 years in the police force, 10 of which were spent at the local Werribee police station,” Cr Gilligan said. “For his exemplary service to the police force, Peter received the Australian Police Medal (APM) for distinguished service in the 2009 Queen’s Birthday honours list.” Peter was elected to Wyndham council during the 2012-2016 term, representing the Iramoo Ward. “Peter was the [council’s] inaugural portfolio holder for environment and sustainability, enabling him to champion a range of initiatives, setting the agenda for a more sustainable Wyndham,” Cr Gilligan said. “He was out and about and involved in a range of activities from the inaugural Garage Sale Trail to the Compost Revolution worm farm to helping plant trees on National Tree Day.” Cr Gilligan said that, Peter served as chair of the council’s Community Safety Roundtable and on the Preventing Family Violence sub-committee. In total, Peter served on more than 15 committees and working groups as a council representative, from the Mud on Roads (Werribee South) Committee to the Werribee River Association. “He was fondly regarded by all committee members and council oicers for his passion, commitment, and enthusiasm to improving the wellbeing and safety of the community,” Cr Gilligan said. “Peter was highly regarded and well respected by the community he served. Figures released by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) revealed two new active case of the virus had been recorded in the municipality since Saturday. On Friday, there were 51 cases of the virus recorded in Wyndham residents and no active cases. No answers on precinct decision By Alesha Capone he chairman of the consortium seeking to build a $31 billion education city in Werribee says he still hopes to go ahead with the plan. Bill Zheng said the Australian Education City (AEC) group planned to appeal a Supreme Court decision which last month ruled the state government did not have to divulge why it pulled the pin on an Expressions of Interest process for the project. “We are not asking for money or compensation, we are basically asking for an opportunity for the state to reconsider its decision,” Mr Zheng told Star Weekly.

“We are still committed, we can still make it work – we are happy to work with the state on what they want. “In fact, we are asking for the opportunity to still be in the project.” In 2015, the AEC, a consortium of Australian and Chinese entities, was selected as the preferred bidder to develop more than 400 hectares of the East Werribee Employment Precinct. he AEC proposed to build a commercial, educational, retail and mixed-use site including a university, research centre, secondary school, indigenous community centre and heritage park. he education city would also have been

home to 70,000 people. However, last year the state government decided not to proceed with the Expressions of Interest process for the site and has refused to reveal why. he AEC went to the Supreme Court in February seeking a declaration that the decision to end the tender process was invalid, or an order quashing the decision. It also sought orders which would compel the state government to provide reasons for ending the process. On May 20, Supreme Court Associate Justice Melissa Daly dismissed the AEC’s summons. Associate Justice Daly said there were

“negligible prospects” of the state government being able to produce further information “which would cause me to alter my view that AEC’s claims in this proceeding have no real prospects of success”. Mr Zheng said the AEC’s 40-plus shareholders wanted to know the state government’s reasons for ending the East Werribee tender process. He said it would be possible to build the education city at a diferent site to East Werribee, or possibly elsewhere in Victoria, New South Wales or Queensland. He is also working with Wyndham council to ind another suitable site for the education city if the state government backed the idea.

Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said the council has reopened more than 200 playgrounds, skate parks and sporting reserves. He is encouraing anybody using the parks to ensure they maintaining social distancing and observe the limits on the number of people allowed to gather in one place. Maternal and Child Health services have resumed for families with babies up to eight weeks old, at some council sites.

Werribee Plaza Library will open to the public on June 9, and Point Cook Library on June 15, with up to 20 visitors at any one time. Western Leisure Services (WLS) chief executive Alison Dixon said the organisation was aiming to open AquaPulse and Eagle Stadium on June 22. Ms Dixon said WLS anticipated that it would be able to open AquaPulse’s 50 metre pool and warm water pool to a limit of 20 patrons per session. he centre’s gyms would have a limit of 20 people at any one time, and group itness classes a maximum of 10 people.

WLS members will not be charged their normal fortnightly fees, but instead a “pay as you go” system. Some programs would only be accessible to members. No changerooms would be open. Werribee Open Range Zoo opened to the public on Monday, with a limit of 1000 visitors at any one time. However, some indoor areas, such as reptile and nocturnal houses, remain closed for safety reasons. Ticket purchases to the zoo must also be made online. Underground vehicle detection sensors will be installed across more than 2000 parking bays in Werribee’s CBD and surrounds during coming weeks. Smart Parking technology will use the sensors to determine, in real time, when a parking space becomes free. his information will link up to the app, allowing drivers to see where available parking is located using an in-built Google Map function. he app will verbally direct drivers to empty spaces. Wyndham’s smart cities portfolio holder, Cr Aaron An, said the app would be available on both Apple and Android smartphones. “It will provide drivers with a more pleasant experience in the Werribee city centre, enabling people to spend less time searching for car parks and more time visiting Werribee’s terriic restaurants, cafes and stores,” Cr An said. Backpacks 4 VIC Kids was based at the home

Police were left shaking their heads after intercepting a driver, whose unregistered car had no exhaust system connected and bald tyres, on Tarneit Road last Wednesday. About 5.30pm, the driver – a 32-year-old Point Cook man – drove his car past a police vehicle. The driver received three infringement notices, adding up to more than $2000.

Road repair Wyndham council will receive more than $1.5 million from the federal government under a national $1.8 billion plan to support jobs and businesses during the coronavirus pandemic. Wyndham’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe, said the council would put the federal funding towards road repair and resurfacing projects. “Council spends $12 million on roads a year, excluding major road upgrades,” Mr Thorpe said. A water play adventure playground will be built at a new park approved for Mambourin. Something to sing about Point Cook girl Devy, who captured hearts across the nation after singing at the Eurovision – Australia Decides concert earlier this year, has written a song reminding us all to stay safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nine year-old performed alongside singer Kate Miller-Heidke during the Eurovision event on the Gold Coast, which was broadcast on SBS, in February. Devy said that she penned Stay Home – Coronavirus song on the second day of a 21-day songwriting challenge which she has set for herself, during the pandemic lockdown. “I do a lot of singing in my day because music is what makes me happy,” Devy said. “I write songs often because it comes naturally to me and it’s my favourite activity to do.” Devy said her dream was to become a popular pop/rap singer-songwriter. “I hope a lot of people will know me because I could bring a smile to their faces and make their day with my music,” she said. extra $2.80 to $4 per week. He said he sent Cr Khan an email on March 31, urging Cr Khan to be transparent about where the cuts would be “otherwise this just looks like blatant electioneering with a council election coming up”. Cr Kim McAliney said Cr Khan had not provided any inancial modelling to support a 10 per cent rate reduction, which would result in “severe cuts” to the council’s capital programs and staf. Cr Peter Maynard said a 10 per cent cut in rates would result in the loss of about $21

million from the council’s annual budget. “his is an ill-conceived and unwarranted notice of motion, that has no sustainability for this council whatsoever,” he said. “I think it’s nothing but a vote-grab.” Cr Tony Hooper described the notice of motion as “grandstanding at best and outright manipulation at worst”. Cr John Gibbons said: “It’s a crazy motion and I oppose it”. Cr Khan was the only councillor to vote in favour of the motion, although Cr Walter Villagonzalo abstained from the inal vote.

Money yet to be claimed By Alesha Capone Hoppers Crossing residents are yet to claim hundreds of thousands of dollars from the State Revenue Oice (SRO). Data from the SRO shows that Hoppers Crossing is among the top ive areas in the state for unclaimed money with more than 3550 entitlements, adding up to a total of $347,916, waiting to be found. he SRO holds money unclaimed by Victorians, including share dividends, salaries, rents, bonds, debentures, interest and proceeds from sales. across Victoria, ranging from as little as $20 all the way up to $994,994 – the biggest single entitlement – which is owed to a Mulgrave woman. A Brighton East woman has an unclaimed entitlement of $412,610, while another in Ardeer has $259,828 waiting for her. Jobs to go at Target Between 1000 to 1300 roles are expected to be cut from Target’s store support oice in Williams Landing. he news was announced by Wesfarmers last week, along with plans to close several of Target’s 248 stores across the country, or convert them into Kmarts. he Target store at Paciic Werribee has not been identiied for closure or rebranding. Target moved its head oice from Geelong to Williams Landing in 2018. Werribee is set to get a new of-leash dog park. he state government last week announced $275,000 in funding for the future Bulban Road Dog Park, as part of its Suburban Parks Program. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the dog park would be established by late next year. “his is great news for our community of dog lovers who will soon have access to designated parkland to exercise their pets with other like-minded people,” Mr Pallas said. “his funding will help transform the area, making it even more appealing for dog owners.” he state government has allocated funding for 15 new “pocket parks” and nine of-leash dog parks across Melbourne, ater councils were invited to nominate potential sites which were then assessed by an independent panel. he Suburban Parks Program will create up to 6500 hectares of new parkland, walking trails, bike trails, pocket and dog parks across the metropolitan area. As part of the program, Maribyrnong will get a new dog park, the hompson Reserve Dog Park, and a pocket park will be built in Birmingham Street, Yarraville. Parks will also be created in South Melbourne, South Yarra, Collingwood, Cairnlea, Carrum, St Kilda, Bentleigh, Moorabbin, Brunswick, Caulield South, Flemington, Sunshine West, Prahran, Ivanhoe, Mickleham, Preston, Eltham North, Oakleigh, Cranbourne East and Rowville.

Muzzle call after dog attack By Alesha Capone A dog owner whose Golden Retriever was attacked by another dog in Truganina last month says she wants to raise awareness of the importance of obedience training. Cham Kumara was walking her dog, six-year-old Savannah, on a leash near Westmeadows Lane and Stable Drive when the attack occurred around 1.20pm to 1.30pm on May 20. Ms Kumara said she saw a girl, who looked about 16 to 18 years old, walking a “very muscly and powerful” dark-and-white-coloured dog.

he dog, which was on a chain, broke loose from the girl and ran towards Savannah, before latching onto her neck. he girl grabbed the dark-coloured dog and dragged it of Savannah, but it broke free and attacked again. Ms Kumara said she was so shaken up that she did not think to take a photo of the girl, or get her details. Ms Kumara said luckily, on the day of the attack, Savannah was wearing a doggy pufer-jacket, which helped to shield her from the other dog’s attack. However, Savannah still sufered a deep puncture wound to her neck.

Ms Kumara said she reported the attack to Wyndham council, because she was worried what could have happened if a smaller dog or child had been the victim. Ms Kumara said the owners of the attacking dog needed to be educated about safe pet ownership. “hey need to take the dog to an obedience school and put a muzzle on the dog in public,” she said. Wyndham council’s city operations director Stephen horpe said council was investigating the incident and searching for the ofending dog and its owner.

Fundraiser success for relay Paige Smith has been recognised as the highest individual Relay for Life fundraiser in Wyndham. he seven-year-old from Manor Lakes raised more than $5064 for the relay, which is held every year in aid of the Cancer Council. he Wyndham event was cancelled earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, however some people who had planned on participating have donated funds they had already raised to the Cancer Council. Paige was part of the wider City West Taekwondo’s Relay fundraising team. he City West Taekwondo team, headed by the club’s admin manager Silvana de Pasquale, raised a whopping $23,287 for Relay For Life this year. Paige said that she and her father, Shannon, organised a charity auction at a fundraising trivia night hosted by City West Taekwondo. he items they auctioned included a signed North Melbourne Football jersey, donated by ex-player and family friend Peter Chisnall; and jerseys signed by AFL player Dustin Martin, which were donated by Mick Hargraves from BoxingFit Port Melbourne. Mr Chisnall’s son also donated a top signed by Melbourne Storm players. A football signed by Western Bulldogs players and a cricket bat signed by the Victorian Bushrangers were among the other auction items. he auction raised more than $600. Paige’s family and friends also helped out with her fundraising eforts. Paige said she felt proud to have raised more than $5000.

More than 100 asylum seekers could ind a pathway into secure work thanks to a $500 million state government injection to help ease people through the COVID-19 crisis. he Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) has been granted six months worth of funding for 90 full-time equivalent jobs, enabling the Footscray-based service to provide jobs for up to 120 people who are seeking asylum in Australia. he government’s ‘Working for Victoria’ program is matching people who have lost their job due to the economic impacts of coronavirus with employers who need staf. ASRC chief executive Kon Karapanogiotidis said there is arguably no group more vulnerable to the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic than people seeking asylum and their families, as they are unable to access JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments. “Without an income or any safety net, people are unable to provide their families with the basics like food, healthcare and shelter. How are you meant to survive the pandemic without these things?” ASRC director Abiola Ajetomobi said the initiative could be a irst step in working with the state government to address structural barriers deterring employers from hiring people seeking asylum. “We believe the Working for Victoria funding provides an incredible opportunity for people seeking asylum, helping to restore their income, build Australian work experience and improve their longer term job prospects,” she said. he state government has also struck agreements with 28 councils across Victoria to support more than 2300 people into jobs that include land and asset management, community outreach, hardship relief delivery and crisis co-ordination. Maribyrnong council infrastructure services director Steve Hamilton said 50 workers have been employed to work across Maribyrnong for the next three months keeping shopping districts clean and sanitised. “his work includes cleaning street furniture such as seats and bins, traic light buttons, poles, handrails, post boxes and door handles,” he said. “he additional cleaning and sanitising work is appreciated by council and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Benjamin Millar

Mixed bag for property By Alesha Capone Median house prices in Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Wyndham Vale all increased during the irst three months of this year, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria. REIV igures show that between January and March, median house prices in Werribee grew by 4.3 per cent to $510,000, when compared to the October-December quarter of last year. he median price for Hoppers Crossing houses increased by 1.7 per cent to $531,000, while Wyndham Vale (where there were less than 30 sales for the period) grew by 2.2 per cent to reach $450,000. Median prices in Point Cook fell by 2.8 per

cent to hit $675,000, and median prices in Tarneit fell 1.2 per cent to $557,500. In Manor Lakes, where there was also less than 30 sales, median house prices decreased by 1.2 per cent to $577,000. REIV president Leah Calnan said the state’s property market achieved record-breaking growth prior to the outbreak of coronavirus. During the March quarter, the median house price for metropolitan Melbourne hit $890,000 for the irst time, a 3.7 per cent growth on the previous quarter. Records were “smashed” in the outer Melbourne region, which includes Wyndham, with both houses and units reaching new high quarterly median values of $695,500 and $550,000 respectively.

Mr Wright said demand for 5G has increased during coronavirus pandemic. “We are unable to break down sales igures by region but have seen strong growth in our 5G Home product over the last couple of months, with consumers looking for a fast and reliable internet solution that meets the changing needs of their home internet usage,” he said. Hockey club farewells life member he Werribee Hockey Club has bid a fond farewell to life member Allan Purcell, who passed away on May 22. A 28 metre-long bridge being constructed in Tarneit is set to open to traic this month. he Bethany Road bridge, across Davis Creek, includes one traic lane each way with shared paths for pedestrians and bicycles on both sides of the road. Construction of the bridge, near he Grove estate, began during May last year. More than 850 land lots have been sold at he Grove, with some residents already settled in. About 2600 residential lots will be built at the estate, across 167 hectares, by Frasers Property Australia. As Victoria moves to relax its rules this week, here is what people can expect. Play it safe. his is how New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern proposes the country take its irst steps out of this global pandemic. When New Zealand and Australia called a COVID-19 state of emergency in March, the Kiwis took the hard line early, imposing a full lockdown for ive weeks. Stay home, save lives was the message. he only reason to leave your “bubble”, describing each household and those in it, was to visit the doctors, pharmacies, supermarkets or to work in essential services. Stringent social distancing and hygiene rules are enforced by the police, army and navy. Ms Ardern’s tough, composed, calculated and compassionate approach to the crisis drew widespread attention across the globe. Australia took a similar approach to its Trans-Tasman cousins and life, in both countries, looks very diferent these days. On May 15, New Zealand began relaxing its strict rules around public gatherings, re-opening businesses and allowing more social interaction. But border restrictions and mandatory 14-day quarantine for returned travellers from most countries are here to stay. Last Friday, New Zealand had no new cases of COVID-19 – the sixth day in a row. At the time there were only eight active cases. here had been 22 deaths related to the virus and the last community transmission was in early April.

Ms Ardern said Kiwis face at least four more weeks of physical distancing obligations and limits on social gatherings at alert level two. She said that the low number of new cases meant that, instead of increasing the limit on gatherings in stages as Australia is doing, New Zealand could now jump to 100 people at weddings, funerals, churches, as well as private parties.

Both countries are also considering a Trans-Tasman bubble to be operational by September. Ms Ardern said in conversations with her Australian counterpart Scott Morrison there was “enthusiasm from both sides” for travel to resume. “We are working to move on this as quickly as we can,” Ms Ardern last week said of the

move. “We are both very keen on it … across both sides of the ditch. It won’t be too long before we are ready.” Rules will be reviewed on June 8 – but Cabinet would not consider whether the country was ready to move to level one until June 22. Dr Pehal has been practising for more than 15 years and has a particular interest in paediatric dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, endodontics (root canals), prosthodontics (dentures, crowns and bridges) and periodontics (gum disease). Dr Amreen obtained her Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) and Doctor of Dental Surgery from Monash University and the University of Melbourne respectively. She has volunteered as part of the Royal Flying Doctors Service in Nepal in rural Victoria and is luent in Bengali. All three dentists are dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of oral hygience and health. “Most oral health conditions are preventable, however many people aren’t aware of the importance of good oral hygiene and the efect it has on an individual’s overall health,” Dr Pehal says. “We strive to improve people’s knowledge about oral health and ensure they have a

comfortable, yet afordable experience.” Dr Sarojani says the team has a professional, compassionate approach to patients. “To have patients come in with pain, missing teeth or problems they need help with, and have them smiling and happy ater their treatment is
