Fall in love with colour It’s easy to be impressed by the images you see in magazines and on design sites – the challenge is knowing how to make them work in your own home. To address this common frustration, Dulux has partnered with interior stylist Julia Green to guide you step-by-step on how to give your rooms an ‘on trend’ makeover. “he real trick is looking for the ideas behind the images and inding ways to make them work in your own home,” says Julia. “If you’re looking to liven a room, are short on time and don’t want to spend a fortune, paint can be your best friend, allowing you to breathe new life into tired spaces with minimal cost and efort.

Faced with a bland, white bedroom, Julia took inspiration from Dulux’s Repair palette to give it some much-needed personality and interest.

“While it had lovely features such as wooden loorboards, white walls and shutters, it was crying out for some character,” Julia says.

“When it comes to choosing colour, I believe it’s the emotional connection we make that is the most important thing – perhaps even more important than how we dress a space.

I knew the deep greenish blues and hints of cinnamon would be perfect for creating a warm, welcoming feel in this bedroom.”

Julia looked for easy ways to incorporate doses of colour in paint, accessories and sot furnishings.

“I chose an artwork for the back wall that was illed with beautiful, earthy tones, all present in the Dulux Repair palette, and used this to inform the rest of my colour choices. I selected

JULIA’S STYLING TIPS When choosing colours, think about the mood you want to create. I chose greeny-blues and accents of cinnamon and terracotta here because I wanted to create a cosy, refreshing vibe.

• Start with an artwork: Take your colour cues from a key painting or print to give your room scheme an intentional feel.

• Add energy to the space with one or two jolts of an unexpected colour. And remember; contrast is key.

• If you’re adding white to the mix, choose one with similar undertones as your brights.

• Think beyond walls – use paint to revamp old furniture and accessories too. You may just ind yourself falling right back in love with them!

• Have fun and experiment – remember, if you change your mind about a colour, you can always paint over it. To feel conident with your choice, always start with a sample pot or A4-size swatch so you can live with the colour for a few days without fully committing.

Shoot the breeze As temperatures and energy prices rise, passive design is making it’s way on to the ‘must have’ list for many home buyers.

Diners welcomed back

By Jessica Micallef Dining out is back on the menu as Victoria begins to reopen ater more than two months of lockdown to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents can now return to their favourite restaurant, cafe or pub – and restaurant owner Praveen Vegunta couldn’t be more excited.

Mr Vegunta’s American-style wale house Nutbug has been restricted to takeaway only and operating on reduced hours and staf since lockdown was imposed in March.

“We are very excited at the moment,” he said last week.

“At least now we can see the community who have missed out on dining. Now they can come in.

“It hasn’t been the best time for us … We had to cut down our staf and we had to cut down the supplies.

“Sales have also gone down.”

But the restaurant owner is inally seeing the light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

From yesterday, cafes, restaurants and pubs can seat up to 20 patrons for dine-in service while adhering to strict social distancing restrictions.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the number of patrons could be lited to 50 by June 22 and up to 100 by the second half of July.

Macedon Ranges council planning and environment director Angela Hughes said the easing of restrictions in a staged and orderly way was a very welcome announcement.

“It will be good to see visitors return to enjoy our region as well as local people getting out and helping our local businesses to get back on their feet,” she said.

“Our local businesses need cash low to survive and this is a good step to getting the economy on the move again.

“Spending money locally and being welcoming of visitors will help to drive re-employment and once again see vibrancy

back in our towns and villages.”

Playgrounds, skate parks and outdoor gym equipment are also re-opening in line with a relaxation of restrictions.

Indoor pools are likely to reopen this month

with no more than 20 people per venue and up to three patrons per lap lane.

Modiications will be in place in all indoor and outdoor itness, aquatic and leisure facilities to ensure customer and staf safety.

Shining light in dark days

By Laura Michell Mernda’s Kristen O’Bree credits the Starlight Children’s Foundation with making the Royal Children’s Hospital a more welcoming place for her family, especially son Chayse.

Chayse, 7, has a rare genetic disorder called LPIN1 – the same condition which caused the death of his brother and best friend, Cruze.

LPIN1 is a metabolic disorder which can cause rhabdomyolysis – the breakdown of muscles – and ultimately cardiac arrest.

Chayse was diagnosed with the condition last May. He was tested for LPIN1 on the advice of doctors at the RCH, following the death of Cruze in September 2018.

Kristen and husband Michael did not know Cruze, 6, had LPIN1.

Last year, Chayse spent 40 nights at the RCH being treated for LPIN1. During his stay, he was put in touch with the Starlight Children’s Foundation and Captain Starlight, which helped make his time in hospital more enjoyable.

Mrs O’Bree said returning to the hospital where Cruze died had been extremely diicult for the family.

“When Cruze died, we were at he Austin and they transferred him to the Children’s and that’s where he died ... I never wanted to go there again,” she said.

Victorians urged to be safe here are two active coronavirus case across the Macedon Ranges and Hume.

According to the Department of Health and Human services, there were 58 cases in Hume, as of Sunday, two of those cases was active.

In the Macedon Ranges, cases remained steady at nine cases across the region, none of them were active.

In Victoria, there were 1649 conirmed COVID-19 cases, as of Sunday. here have been 168 cases in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission.

Victoria’s chief health oicer professor Brett Sutton said the new cases highlighted the need to remain vigilant.

“We have to continue to track, trace and act on infections in this pandemic,” said professor Sutton.

“Restrictions around some activities have now been eased in Victoria in recognition of the current low rate of community transmission of this virus.

“While encouraging, we need to remain vigilant. It is increasingly important that we stay at home when unwell and get tested, wash our hands regularly, sneeze and cough into our elbow and maintain physical distancing. “hese are common sense actions to ensure we don’t create a second wave of this serious disease. Similarly, if you can work from home, you should continue to do so until at least the end of June. Now is not the time for complacency.”

A tractor has been reunited with its owner after Gisborne police executed a search warrant at a Monegeetta property last month. Police seized a tractor that was stolen in 2013 and a number of trailers. Police are trying to reunite the trailers with their owners. Book your next read Goldields Libraries across the Macedon Ranges are ofering a click and collect service for locals to pick up their favourite book. he service, which launched on June 1, provides people with the chance to reserve a library item through an online catalogue and pick up their reserved items at Woodend, Gisborne, Kyneton and Romsey libraries.

Woodend library manager Lulu Cockram said borrowers, who missed out on their items due to the shutdown of libraries, were irst in line to receive their items.

“When the closures irst commenced, there were a lot of people who reserved items in the library and we have now been able to contact them,” she said. “Although some people have waited two months to pick up their book

or DVD, they have deinitely appreciated us getting back in touch.”

While people haven’t been able to physically come in to the library, Ms Cockram said there had been a “huge” increase in the demand for e-books. “But I think there is still a demand for hard copy books. It won’t be that the library goes to an online library.”

To remain connected with the Macedon Ranges community during the closure, library staf set up a YouTube channel to present online storytimes and author talks.

A 35-year-old Sunbury man has had his car impounded for a month after he was allegedly caught trying to evade Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol oficers last month. The man has been summoned to appear at court at a later date for evading police, driving while disqualiied and displaying false number plates. The vehicle was impounded at cost of $990.

Drugs and guns seized Investigators allegedly located a quantity of cannabis and a number of imitation irearms at a Gisborne industrial property last month during a search warrant. A 50-year-old Gisborne man has been charged and has been bailed to appear at the Kyneton Magistrates Court at a later date.

Cat owners on notice for curfew

By Jessica Micallef Macedon Ranges cat owners are being encouraged to prepare for the introduction of strict new curfew guidelines.

From July 1, all cats across the region must be indoors between sunset and sunrise. Cats will also be prohibited from most of the Macedon Ranges’ most “sensitive” environmental areas. he council’s assets and operations director Shane Walden, said now was the time for cat owners to prepare for the new requirements. “he council recognises building cat

enclosures and making behavioural adjustments for cats takes time,” he said.

“We’re asking cat owners to act now, well before the July 1 curfew.

“With many cat owners currently spending more time at home, this is a great opportunity to start thinking about how to conine your cat overnight and minimise stress while it adapts to change.” he council is encouraging cat owners to consider appropriate overnight housing for their pets including adapting, designing, building or buying an appropriate enclosure.

Cat owners should also seek out information on cat behaviour training and enrichment options. “he council’s website is a great source of information for hints and tips around conining cats,” Mr Walden said.

“Over the coming weeks, we’ll be adding further information including advice from veterinary behavioural specialists.”

Last year, the council approved a report aimed at responsible pet ownership, based on the results of extensive community feedback he report outlined a sunset to sunrise

curfew, prohibiting cats from entering designated public places for environmental reasons and introducing cat management strategies including a low-cost de-sexing and microchipping scheme to coincide with the new curfew. he report stated that separate surveys conducted in 2014 and 2017 showed residents supported implementing cat curfews.

Nearly 50 per cent of residents said ‘yes’ to the council introducing a curfew.

Singing hospital’s praises A former Northern Hospital patient has been inspired to write a song about his time at the hospital.

Martin Cox was recently admitted to the hospital following a ride-on mower accident that let him needing surgery on a badly injured foot.

He said he was so impressed by the care received during his admission that he decided to write a song about his experience.

“When I came into the emergency department, they were fabulous. hey sat there patiently getting all the grass and mud out of my mounds because I had fallen into a dam,” Mr Cox said.

“I then had an operation to debride the bone and ater that, they very nicely gave me my own room as they knew I was going to be in for quite a while. hen all the fun began as they tried to work out what to do. “hree teams – plastics, orthopaedics and

infectious diseases – were all involved. he irst major thing was getting the surgery done.

“Once the blood was going properly, it was just waiting until I was good enough to go home – so I was in for about another three weeks ater the operation.”

Mr Cox said he hoped the song went some way towards thanking the staf for how “professional and wonderful they were”.

He began writing the song while still in hospital, which proved diicult at times as he tried to keep it a surprise for the staf.

“I got sprung a few times by one of the doctors and he asked, ‘what are you singing?’ I just said ‘oh just making stuf up’ – it was quite funny,” he said.

Mum’s journey inspires

By Alesha Capone Victoria University graduate Rochelle Smith says she was inspired to become a paramedic ater learning about her mother’s battle with chronic diseases.

Ms Smith, 22, said that while growing up, she heard stories about how her mother, Belinda, had sufered from severe asthma, emphysema, arthritis and osteoporosis.

“My mum has never needed an ambulance since she had me, however the efort and care my mum received during her childhood years, from paramedics and other hospital staf, is incredible. Without them, my mum wouldn’t be here and neither would I,” Ms Smith said.

“Today, she still lives with disease and struggles daily, however now that I’m a paramedic I feel a little more at ease, where previously it was a scary time.”

Ms Smith and her mother both live in Manor Lakes. Ms Smith is based at Ambulance Victoria’s Bacchus Marsh station.

“I am one of the 120 new graduates recruited during the coronavirus pandemic to help bolster health services across the state,” Ms Smith said.

“I graduated from Victoria University last year … and I am currently undertaking Ambulance Victoria’s induction program so that I am ready to hit the road at the start of June.

“I think that what I’ll enjoy most about the job is paying it forward, helping people in what may be their darkest day. “he job is special, we are invited into people’s homes … their safe and personal space, the trust the community gives us when they are vulnerable. I just hope that I can give people a little positivity, in these moments, that they will never forget.”

Ms Smith said that Ambulance Victoria had provided additional training for paramedics to help them deal with the coronavirus, and high-grade personal protective equipment including suits, masks, gloves and eyewear.

“It has changed the way we respond to patients with certain procedures being completed diferently, to protect the patient and ourselves while delivering the best patient care,” Ms Smith said. “My take-home message during

this coronavirus pandemic is to not be afraid of calling triple-0 for emergencies. If you’re sick, we are here for you and want to support you in every way we can.”

Ms Smith said being a paramedic was a rewarding employment opportunity, and urged other young people to consider it as a career.

“We can all somehow it into this wonderful job, young or old, and contribute to the community, which is what I love,” she said.

Ambulance response slows Ambulance response times in the Macedon Ranges have risen by nearly half a sminute, according to the latest data.

Quarterly performance data, for January to March, reveals ambulances arrived at the scene of emergencies 31 seconds slower on average than the same time last year.

Ambulances arrived in 13 minutes and 50 seconds on average – compared to 13 minutes and 21 seconds the previous year.

Ambulances responded to 513 code one calls across the region – up from 488.

On average, 64.9 per cent of calls were responded to in less than 15 minutes – down from 68.6 per cent.

For Hume, the data for January to March revealed ambulances arrived at the scene of emergencies more than a minute slower.

Ambulances arrived in 11 minutes and 27 seconds on average, compared to 10 minutes and 13 seconds the previous year.

In Hume, ambulances attended 423 more code one calls in January to March, up from 2896 the previous year.

About 83 per cent of calls were responded to in less than 15 minutes in Hume, down from nearly 90 per cent the same time last year.

Across the state, 77,380 code one calls were recorded between January and March – up from 72,685 in the same period last year.

Farmers want a future

By Jessica Micallef A trail connecting four major Macedon Ranges towns is a step closer to reality.

Macedon Ranges council will receive $8.75 million through the state government’s Building Works program to put towards it’s Macedon Ranges Trail Project. he trail is designed to encourage cycling, walking and running for people of all abilities and will connect users to some of the major towns across the region.

Once complete, the trail will cover more than 23 kilometres and will link Woodend, Macedon, New Gisborne and Riddells Creek.

Macedon Ranges council is now working with public land managers to inalise design work.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas said the trail would enhance tourism oferings, access the Macedon Ranges and improve community health and social inclusion by providing a safe, shared and accessible trail for everyone.

“We need to be investing in projects now that will not only help our local economy recover from the coronavirus pandemic, but will beneit our community into the future,” she said. “he Macedon Ranges Trail Project will create local jobs, support our local businesses and provide fantastic experience for locals and visitors to enjoy.”

he council endorsed the Macedon Ranges Shared Trails Feasibility Studies project at last year’s August council meeting. he studies explored and made recommendations for the development of “enjoyable and safe” shared trail links between major towns in the region, including a trail

connecting Daylesford, Woodend, Kyneton and Hanging Rock. he Building Works package is expected to provide $2.7 billion towards projects to get people back to work. he package includes $382 million in upgrades, maintenance and new experiences at tourism destinations.

A scholarship to boost the expertise of young Macedon Ranges farmers is available. he state government has launched its Upskill and Invest Young Farmers Scholarship program for 2020 to provide farmers with the opportunity to expand their skills, knowledge and agriculture expertise.

Successful applicants will be able to access study and training, as well as invest in on-farm initiatives and further professional development. he program ofers scholarships of up to $10,000 to support training and study in areas such as business and risk management and genetics and pasture management development.

Once recipients complete their studies, further funding of up to $5000 to put their new skills into practice will be made available.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas said the state government will invest a further $375,000 into the program over the next three years.

“Our young farmers in the Macedon Ranges bring fresh, creative ideas to the table,” she said.

Applications for this year’s scholarships are open to farmers aged 35 or under who have been working in farm businesses for at least three days a week for the past three months, with at least two years total experience on-farm.

Applications close on Sunday, June 14.

Aussie Kindies Early Learning Sunbury is taking new enrolments for families seeking access to free childcare in May and June under the federal government’s Early Childhood Education and Care Relief package.

Centre manager Collene Lowry said the centre is operating as normal and is taking new

enrolments from families who plan to begin or continue their child’s early learning journey.

“Our message for new families, who think they may not be eligible for free childcare, or who have been turned away recently by other providers, is you are welcome to discuss enrolling in our centre and beneit from free childcare under the new relief package until it ends on June 28,” she said.

“We have prioritised access for children of essential workers, vulnerable children and our

currently enrolled families.

“We can still cater for additional children in the majority of our centres and families who are isolating can access our Lifelong Learning At Home weekly programs, created by our education team.

“Operating hours and inclusions such as nappies, food and provisions are completely unchanged.”

Ms Lowry said “extensive” health and hygiene procedures, training and new practices

including daily temperature checks and drop-of zones at the Sunbury childcare have been welcomed by families.

“Most importantly, our people have remained with us,” she said.

“Children have access to the same early childhood educators and teachers.”

Book lovers rejoice Sunbury residents will soon be able to indulge in their favourite book at their local library. he Sunbury library in the Hume Global Learning Centre will reopen for business on June 9 following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. he library’s chutes, for patrons to return their borrowed items, reopened yesterday.

Hume Libraries co-ordinator Mieke Mellars said about 50 per cent of the library’s collection was currently out on loan.

“We can’t operate properly without getting the stuf back,” she said. “he chutes have been closed for two months so we need to make sure we process the materials that come back.”

Once the library reopens on June 9, up to a maximum of 20 patrons, plus staf, will be allowed in at any one time. Cleaning measures will be enhanced and social distancing will be encouraged. “here will be signs on the loor, signs on the walls, signs basically wherever we can plaster

them because we need to make sure that people are aware of social distancing,” Ms Mellars said.

“We will be cleaning every single high-touch surface. All the library materials that come back through the chutes will all go into quarantine for 72 hours.

“We will probably make it a condition on entry … that people sanitise their hands.”

Although the Sunbury library was closed for two months Ms Mellars said patrons were still able to borrow their favourite book through a home delivery service.

“We call it Hume Libraries Express,” Ms Mellars said. “here has been a huge uptake through that. At the end of last week we delivered 1576 parcels across Hume and in total it ended up being 17,568 library items that were borrowed.

Pregnancy in a pandemic

By Alesha Capone For Emma Slattery, being pregnant during the coronavirus pandemic has presented several challenges, but has also allowed her to have more family time. he western suburbs resident is a mother to two girls, four-year-old Lilly and two-year-old Aurelia, and her third child is due in mid-July.

Miss Slattery said there was always a fear of the unknown, and as an expectant parent, the pandemic had ampliied this.

She said medical appointments have been “very diferent” when compared to her previous two pregnancies.

“Not having as many, and most of them being over the phone, was a diicult thing to get your head around,” she said.

“It’s hard enough trying to remember all the things you want to ask in a face-to-face appointment, let alone when you are on the phone with kids ighting for your attention.

“THE JOY OF FAMILY” How wonderful it is that we can again see family!

Small and safe gatherings certainly, but such a joy.

I have found in speaking to people of different age brackets that “family” has been one of the parts of life so affected by COVID-19. The start of home schooling was a bumpy road for some but now I am hearing that many parents are sorry that schools are re-opening.
