The mum-of-three is preparing for a relaxing day alongside children James, 10, Luke, 8, and Emma 5. “It will probably be a similar day to usual. I get coffee and breakfast made for me and brought to me in bed, and I won’t do any housework or house duties during the day,” Kat said. “We usually meet up with the grandmothers for brunch. We’ll probably FaceTime at some point instead, which will be nice.”
Toxic soil at Ravenhall By Tate Papworth he Ravenhall landill has begun accepting PFAS contaminated soil, the Environment Protection Authority has conirmed. he move has angered local MPs who claim the west is being used as a dumping ground. Ravenhall is one of three sites in negotiations with the state government, which is seeking a facility to store 1.5 million cubic metres of rock and soil from the West Gate Tunnel project. In documentation seen by Star Weekly, the
EPA conirmed the Ravenhall landill had begun accepting contaminated soil. “EPA is aware of small volumes of soil impacted with low levels of PFAS being disposed of at the Cleanaway facility in Ravenhall, consistent with their licence. “EPA has not yet received an application from the West Gate Tunnel Project or Cleanaway for the Ravenhall site to receive larger volumes of waste soil from the proposed tunnel section.” When questioned by Star Weekly, the EPA did not conirm if the soil being dumped at
Ravenhall is from the West Gate Tunnel Project. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said he’d been let seething over the lack of transparency surrounding the toxic soil. “I’m about to explode over this,” Mr Finn said. “he state government is treating the west like we don’t matter. “he secrecy around all this is infuriating … I’ve raised this a number of times in Parliament and I’m yet to receive any answers on what’s being dumped and where.” Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur echoed
Mr Finn’s sentiments. “his government is totally opposed to transparency,” she said. Meanwhile, at a special meeting held last Tuesday, Brimbank council reairmed its opposition to accepting the soil. Mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the council would again write to the Victorian government to represent their ongoing concerns. “Our community is really concerned about reports that this contaminated ill could be transported through Brimbank and dumped in the west,” Cr Papafotiou said.

Virus hits university’s inances By Tate Papworth Victoria University is bracing itself for a $50 million hit to its budget as a result of COVID-19. he university had forecast a total budget of $500 million, but with lucrative international students largely unable to ly over, the university’s cofers have taken a blow. Victoria University vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins conceded cost reduction measures, including job losses, needed to be taken. “We’ve had a 10 per cent reduction to our
budget which means we’ve been cutting back on operating costs, mostly in the form of non-salary costs such as travel, utilities etc,” Professor Dawkins said. “With less international students able to attend, some staf costs have been going down as well. “We haven’t reduced permanent staf, but the need to hire casual and sessional staf goes up and down depending on the number students, so that’s down on what we expected and short-term contracts are also being reviewed
too.” Major projects and building around the university’s campuses will be the hardest hit, Professor Dawkins said. “he biggest thing we’ve been doing is to cut capital expenditure … we have to spend $50 million less so we’ve cut infrastructure projects by about $30 million,” he said. While it’s a challenging time, the university’s senior executives, including Professor Dawkins, will donate 10 per cent of their salaries for the next six months to help students doing it tough. “We’ve set up a student support fund …
there’s lots of students doing it tough in this environment where work is down, so this fund provides one-of grants for students,” Professor Dawkins said. “We’ll provide grants for essential living and study expenses for students impacted by job losses or if have to isolate; for tech purposes so they can transition to the online platform; and for crisis support.” he fund started at $300,000 but has already reached $500,000 and received over 500 applications from students in need.

The west’s best driveway voice Elena Konikkos is raising her voice to lit spirits in her Sydenham street. he 17-year-old aspiring singer has been putting on impromptu performances in her driveway to boost morale among her neighbours as they stay home during the COVID-19 restrictions. “I just spontaneously went out to the front on Friday night when my mum was going to do some gardening and I felt like performing,” Elena said. “I’ve been told by my music teachers that I
should do more performing and I’ve just been performing to my mum and my sister my whole entire life so I decided I would sing to my neighbours.” She said the positive response from her community has encouraged her to put on more driveway shows. “It’s an amazing experience,” Elena said. “I love people coming out on the road or simply going for a nice evening walk and just watching me perform. “I’ve never met these neighbours before but
they really enjoyed it and it’s been great to get to know more of them.” Elena has been taking singing lessons since 2016 and is now a teacher at a local performing arts business. Her goal is to apply for he Voice Australia, the televised singing contest, and a new social media competition called Hometown Australia. “I’m hoping to get the Brimbank community to support me with some unique and fun ideas,” Elena said. Women’s Health West says it is expecting to see a “spike” in reports of family violence as the coronavirus pandemic continues. he not-for-proit organisation provides services such as court support, crisis housing and case management to women and children who experience violence in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Brimbank, Moonee Valley and Melbourne. WHW’s chief executive Dr Robyn Gregory said: “Our expectation is that we will see a rise in demand over the coming months. “Due to local and international research, we expect there to be a spike in family violence.” Dr Gregory said reports of family violence oten increased during times of disaster and emergency. Dr Gregory said an example of this was research, conducted by the Gender & Disaster (GAD) Pod – a partnership of two Victorian Women’s Health organisations and the Monash University Disaster Resilience Initiative – which found there was an increase of family violence reports made during and ater the Black Saturday bushires. Dr Gregory said it was “absolutely normal” to feel out of control at a time when people were going into isolation, losing jobs and experiencing inancial hardship, but that individuals could choose how they responded to such a situation. Hospital staff in quarantine By Tate Papworth Twenty-four Sunshine Hospital staf are in isolation ater a patient who underwent emergency surgery later tested positive for COVID-19. he patient presented to the hospital for emergency surgery and had no known risk factors or any symptoms of COVID-19. However, he later developed a mild cough and was tested for COVID-19, returning a positive result. Western Heath said impacted staf
self-isolated as a precaution and testing is underway. Brimbank now has a total of 33 conirmed cases of coronavirus as of hursday. It follows the Victorian government’s announcement of a massive expansion of testing. Last week, the government rolled out 10 new mobile testing sites at Watergardens Town Centre, Bunnings West Footscray, Paciic Werribee, Paciic Epping, Westield Fountain Gate, Bayside Shopping Centre in Frankston, Chadstone, Highpoint, Doncaster, and
Northland shopping centres. Additional sites in regional and suburban locations will come online soon. he testing sites will be manned by doctors, nurses and pathology collection staf. People need to bring their Medicare card, or at least one form of identiication when attending a testing station. Victoria’s chief health oicer Brett Sutton urged anyone in doubt to get tested. “Up to 100,000 Victorians will be tested for coronavirus over the next two weeks as part of a major testing blitz across the state,” Professor
Sutton said. “Victorians have done a remarkable job sticking to the coronavirus restrictions, and by staying home have saved lives. “We are now asking Victorians to again play their part and get tested if they have symptoms, because the more tests we do, the more data we have about the prevalence of coronavirus in the community. “People with even the mildest of symptoms including fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or loss of sense of smell are encouraged to get tested.”

A wedding venue in Melbourne’s west could become the site of Melbourne’s next Slow Food Melbourne Farmers’ Market amid the coronavirus crisis. Happy Receptions at 199 Sunshine Road, Tottenham, has oicially closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In February last year, ater more than 11 years at Abbotsford Convent, the farmers’ market moved to Spotswood Kingsville RSL. Slow Food Melbourne president Alison Peake has now applied to Maribyrnong council to open an additional market at the Tottentham reception centre. As well as selling fresh produce and artisan products, the new market could ofer local traders an opportunity to sell takeaway food, Ms Peake said. “We have said to council that we’d be happy to work with some local businesses, for instance some of the cafes and restaurants, that

Fiteen young Brimbank residents have deied the odds and found local work despite COVID-19 impacting employment rates. he jobseekers have been placed with local companies under a new council initiative called Project BrIMPACT, which helps local businesses recruit and retain more young people facing barriers to employment. he project has resulted in 24 job outcomes to date. Franco Saliba is one of the program’s success stories and said his quick rise through the program surprised even himself. “In September I was unemployed … I’d just been made redundant in my position working in a remote indigenous community as a sports and recreation oicer,” he said. “So I moved back home to the west, but I found it really hard to ind work.” “hen one night a friend tagged me in a post advertising BrIMPACT on Facebook, so I sent a message, had a meeting and it went from there.” Under the program Mr Saliba was able to take part in large co-design sessions where council oicials, businesses, young people and others met and talked through ideas. he 23-year-old impressed and was hired by procurement company Arc Blue. “My current role really lets me focus on business engagement which is something I absolutely love doing,” he said. “I feel like I’ve gone from bottom of this program to the top.” He lauded the program for ofering those with a diferent background a ighting chance. he council is also continuing to promote Brimbank Joblink, a free online service connecting local business with local jobseekers. It took more than 20 ireighters to extinguish a house ire on Main Road, Albanvale last week. At the height of the incident, there were ive MFB appliances at the scene, along with a command unit, a rescue unit and an aerial appliance. The blaze was declared under control 40 minutes after ireighters arrived on the scene. The cause of the ire was deemed suspicious and will be investigated by Victoria Police.

Brimbank council has unveiled its irst-ever virtual art gallery. he gallery takes viewers on a guided tour of ‘he Politics of My Body’ photography exhibition by artist Amrita Sur. he exhibition explores Sur’s way of questioning acquiescence and conformity, and how it provokes a dire need for a shit in thinking in order to transcend a woman’s worth beyond her body. She says she has felt like a spectator of her own life for a very long time and has complied with rituals, customs, impositions, the do’s and don’ts without questioning or being allowed to
question, or knowing any other way, feeling like a product of societal norms. he exhibition originally opened in March at the St Albans Community Centre (STACC), but the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily closed the centre’s doors. But instead of pausing the exhibition, the council’s arts and culture team created another way – online – to bring the exhibition to the community. he exhibition is available until Sunday, May 17 via the virtual gallery at: www.artsteps.com. he exhibition is best viewed on a Smartphone using the Artsteps App, available through Apple Store and Google Play.

When COVID-19 irst broke out, there was a lot of confusion, says Siphoi Tran. he radiographer at Footscray Hospital describes how the coronavirus crisis impacted her workplace. “When it irst started, I think there was a lot of confusion with staf because we were getting a lot of emails about COVID,” she said. “Because the situation was always changing, a lot of our staf were confused with the right things to do. “It induced a little bit of anxiety when it irst started. “I think now with the [staf] bulletins, and in medical imaging we also have a daily

“We are asking everyone to stay at home, but for us, we are leaving home to look ater our patients because we care so much for our community,” Ms Dalde said. “We are the soldiers in this war and we are in the battleield at this stage and need to look out for each other. “his is nursing – we are here to nurture. hey ask me how many kids I have and I say I’ve got 50 here … 50 staf members. “I am really, really proud to be at Western Health. he amount of support they have given to staf plus the planning in preparation and how they make their staf feel safe to look ater COVID patients, that’s really important to me.”
bulletin, it has improved the communication. “At irst it was hectic but now that there are processes in place, it’s a lot better.” She said the hospital’s ‘wellness hubs’ and “a lot of encouraging words” for staf had helped with mental health. “It can be hard to be that perky happy self, especially when there are lot of things that you look forward to outside of work that have been taken away from you,” Ms Tran said. “We still encourage people to take annual leave – obviously it’s good for mental health purposes. “A lot of our staf have been generous in not taking leave and working to help each other out. “When it irst started we had a lot of shits that needed covering and people stepped up and helped each other out.” Her parents, with whom she lives in St Albans, were at irst a little nervous about her working in a hospital during COVID-19. “But over time they have come to accept it,” Ms Tran said. “hey know I come to work and get changed and then change to come home again and clean everything down at the end of the day. “To be honest, they haven’t said much – I think because of the curve lattening now it’s reduced the anxiety. “hey were more anxious about me getting it then me spreading it to them.” Some positives have emerged from the dire situation, Ms Tran said. “It has slowed everyone’s lives down a little bit,” she said. “I know for me, personally, I’ve had more time to slow down and have more of a routine. “Because of the shits in radiology, we have three distinct shits to reduce the overlap of the team and this has given us more routine.”
Michael Woods Melton’s Michael Woods is environmental services supervisor at Sunshine Hospital, responsible for keeping the place clean and sanitary. While his family harboured concerns for his wellbeing, Mr Woods said Western Health had been well prepared for COVID-19. “hey [my family] do have concerns for me because of my age,” the 63-year old said. “But I just told them that we put all the practices into place – the guidelines we’ve been given – and I feel safe. “I think they’ve [Western Health] done a wonderful job. “Everything seems to be under control. “We’ve got good leadership and, in environmental services here, we’re getting good back-up from our all our employees. It’s been very, very good I think.” Mr Woods said when the crisis was over, his team would be relieved. “I think at the end of it we’ll have a lot of joy and happiness,” he said. “Everyone will be relieved, and I think team spirit will be right up there when this is all done.”
Carmen Camilleri Altona North’s Carmen Camilleri hasn’t seen her grandchildren or children during COVID-19 because of her work in a hospital. he ward clerk in palliative care at Sunshine Hospital said her daughter was the most worried in her family. “My daughter was more concerned than anyone else because she’s got a 3-month-old baby,” Ms Camilleri said. “So, about ive weeks ago when all this started, we sort of stayed away from my grandchildren and my children. had remained high. “We are a good team,” Ms Camilleri said. “I don’t think we’ve gone better or worse because we were always like that. We seem to support each other all the time. “he positive is we look out for each other. “he wellness hub is fantastic, I found, and you get that bit of time away from the ward. “We talk about normal everyday things – it’s not sort of in our faces all the time. “Because, you switch the TV on, and it’s in your face every minute of the day.” I think that the hub was a very good idea and I would recommend it to other staf members.”
Bronwyn King Sydenham’s Bronwyn King handles communications and the switchboard at Footscray Hospital. She said being in Australia, the health system had more time than some other countries to prepare for the coronavirus. “I think we are really well prepared,” she said. “We are lucky as we live in Australia – we have had time to prepare.” She described the camaraderie among colleagues as “pretty good”. Initially, her family held concerns about her being at work, but had since come around. “hey are ine, really,” Ms King said. “hey are all at home. “At irst they were worried, but not really anymore.” She said a positive to emerge from the coronavirus was that people were reaching out to each other. “Everyone is communicating a lot more and talking to each other – it’s nice to see.” Western Health is running a COVID community campaign under #ItsUpToUs. Giant sculpture damaged by vandals One of eight giant sculptures along a popular western suburbs trail has been cut at its base and rolled down an embankment in an act of “wilful destruction”. he discovery last week along the Kororoit Creek Trail at Altona North comes amid reports of youth on trail bikes louting stage three coronavirus restrictions and “terrorising” walkers. Geofrey Ricardo’s Spirits of Time and Place installation features eight monolithic sculptures over a two-kilometre trail along Toyota Way. he Brooklyn-based sculptor was commissioned to do the work as a legacy of Toyota’s Altona manufacturing plant which closed in 2017. he art trail was also to complement restoration work by Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek, led by president Geof Mitchelmore, who planted the one millionth tree at the site to signal the completion of the Greening the West – 1 Million Trees Project. Mr Mitchelmore and his wife Olga were walking along the creek last week when they saw that one of the artworks, titled Skygazer, had been removed. “We found him [Skygazer] down near the creek and he’s been dragged out now,” Mr Mitchelmore said. “Geofrey’s got him back at the studio, repairing the damage … a cracked torso and cracked arm and cracked skull. “But subsequent to that, we’ve had two more trees taken down in Brooklyn. “Kids are going on a rampage and it’s just getting well and truly out of control here.” Mr Mitchelmore said he suspected that youths on trail bikes who had been “blitzing

the creek trails” may be behind the damage to the sculpture. He said the riders were impacting on the safety of community members using the trail, as well as the environment. “here was one woman who’s frightened to go back there now because she had a little child with her and she got terrorised by them coming down the path at high speed,” Mr Mitchelmore said. “We’re absolutely devastated by the damage done, and having [the sculptures] been in place for something like four years without any interference, it’s just so sad.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Iron workers at Victoria’s largest engineering company, ARC Engineering, Ballarat Rd, Sunshine, are out on strike indeinitely. Lending a helping hand to vulnerable patients While we have all been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impact is being felt more by some in our community than others. For patients undergoing cancer treatment, or those suffering a chronic health condition, a trip to the supermarket to stock up on pantry supplies can have a devastating impact. To minimise the risk of exposure to the virus, and to ensure patients are not missing out on basic pantry supplies, the Western Health Foundation has stepped in to lend a helping hand. Funded through generous cash donations from the community, the foundation is assisting some of our most vulnerable patients in the community by purchasing and delivering essential pantry staples. The patients, identiied through the BreastWest and Greatest Need support programs, will receive a delivery of essential grocery items including toilet paper and ingredients for meals and snacks. BreastWest support oficer Jennie Wetzler welcomed the support. “With supermarkets experiencing stock outages of many essential items, this directly affects our patients. The last thing we want is for our patients who are immunocompromised to have to make multiple trips to the supermarket and expose themselves unnecessarily just to ind basic grocery items,” she said. “At any time, a breast cancer diagnosis will have a inancial impact to patients. On top of
this some have lost their jobs or partners have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 situation. “Through donations from the community we are able to support these patients and ensure they get the necessary items they need to get them through. “Seeing the joy, and relief, on the faces of our patients when they receive their grocery box is truly uplifting.” Patients identiied through the Greatest Need Project will also beneit from the grocery boxes. These patients are among some of the most vulnerable, often experiencing multiple hospital admissions for chronic conditions, as well as experiencing inancial hardship. Many do not have the ability, or access, to order groceries online and are putting themselves at risk by leaving home to get to the supermarket. Sunshine Hospital has established ’The Pantry’ for those in immediate need of necessary grocery items. This might be a patient being discharged to an empty home for example, to assist them in settling in and recovering for a few days without having the added worry of going to a supermarket. Patients can gain immediate access to basic grocery items donated through the Western Health Foundation. Western Health has launched a Telehealth service to connect patients with their healthcare professional from their home, work or wherever is more convenient, using everyday devices such as smartphones, tablets or desktop computers.
Patients at Western Health can now self-order their hospital meals on their smartphone or tablet using the CBORD Patient App available from Apple or Google Play stores. The app will support patients in isolation and reduce the movement of Menu Monitor staff throughout the hospital. Family members can also order meals on behalf of a patient, either from within or outside the hospital.

Keep on top of your physical health As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, businesses have had to rapidly adapt to a new way of operating, and ensuring the safety of clients, staff and the community has never been more important. Symmetry Physiotherapy remains open for face-to-face consultations and continues to provide new and existing clients with the highest level of care, while strictly following the Department of Health and Australian Physiotherapy Association guidelines to ensure
clinics remain safe for clients to attend. Physiotherapist and managing director of the Symmetry Physiotherapy group Mark Round says the Prime Minister and the Australian government have been very clear in their desire to have physiotherapy clinics remain open to help ease the strain on the public healthcare system and GP clinics. “While some of our clinics have been forced to close due to their location, such as those within a gym, we have had the ability to support
all of our clients and staff from our other local clinics,” Mark says. “Our phone lines remain open and our physios have been even more engaged in person and via phone, email and online Telehealth consultations, than ever before.” The introduction of Telehealth allows physiotherapists to also connect with clients via secure video conferencing. It is a private and conidential consultation where the physio can discuss, assess and accurately determine
an injury and advise the appropriate course of treatment and rehabilitation. Mark, who is also on the Board of Directors of the Australian Physiotherapy Association, explains that the rehabilitation process is enhanced with exercise prescription technology by sharing and demonstrating live videos. “For those clients who need to self-isolate or are unable to attend our clinics, the telehealth experience and feedback so far has been exceptional.” Despite this, Mark says that with many people rapidly transitioning to self-isolation and working from home, this has presented a number of new physical health concerns for clients. “We are inding people are reporting more posture-related neck and back pain and headaches from a poor workstation set-up,” he says. “In response to this, we have introduced new home workstation assessments to our services. Using Telehealth we perform a worksite analysis and provide recommendations to optimise ergonomic set-up. We discuss speciic issues and provide a personalised management plan, involving a tailored stretching or alternative exercise program using our Physitrack App. “This exercise and education program platform allows us to check a client’s exercises and set reminders.” Providing a well-rounded service, Symmetry’s dietitians, exercise physiologists, myotherapists, podiatrists and sports physician also look after the care and management of sporting injuries, spinal injuries, Pilates, exercise rehabilitation, dry needling and more.
