Digger’s virus message By Goya Dmytryshchak One of the last surviving Diggers in Melbourne’s west says he is determined not to let coronavirus kill the Anzac spirit. World War II veteran Marcus Gillespie, six months shy of 96, commemorated Anzac Day twice in lockdown. he Spotswood Kingsville RSL member, who is now at Benetas St George’s in Altona Meadows, joined in the home’s service on hursday and watched the Victorian Dawn Service on TV. Mr Gillespie stays in touch with his family and mates although he can’t physically see them. “I’m locked up, of course, like everybody else,” he said. “We all can’t get out anywhere, no visitors or anything like that. “It’s very, very tough … I miss everything. “It’s an unfortunate thing and I never thought I’d see it in my lifetime but these things come along and you can’t help it. “[With] the dawn service, it’s a shame … but I think it’s for the good of the community.” Mr Gillespie joined the army as soon as he turned 18 in 1942. “I was a trooper, the cavalry,” he said. “he First World War was horses, of course, and the Second World War was tanks – I was in the tank.” He described COVID-19 as the worst thing he had experienced in his lifetime. “I would try, if I could, anything, anything to stop it,” Mr Gillespie said. “I’d probably call it an unknown enemy – you can’t see it. “It’s diferent in, say, war – you can see your opponent, you can either get out of his road or ight back. “But in this instance, it’s an unknown terror.” But Mr Gillespie remains stoic and said it was a matter of adapting to circumstances. “It’s just a matter of doing what you have to do,” he said. “here’s a very old saying that I go by and it’s: ‘he day that you were born is the irst day of the end of your life’. “hat means, you never know when you might meet your fate. It might be on the freeway, it might be a week ater you were born. It might be an old bugger like me. “You just have to take it as it comes along. “Look for the good times, don’t look for the bad times.”

Job loss ‘best chance’ for casuals By Goya Dmytryshchak A decision to terminate rather than stand down 150 casual employees during the coronavirus crisis has been defended by Maribyrnong council’s chief executive. CEO Stephen Wall told last week’s council meeting that it had been the “very best” decision to enable casuals, who were ineligible for the JobKeeper scheme, the ability to seek government support. He said the job losses resulted from the federal government’s decision to close a number

of customer-facing facilities, including aquatic and community centres and libraries. “Not knowing when this COVID-19 pandemic will be over, or when our facilities can reopen and we can again re-engage our casual staf, it was decided that ceasing our engagement with the casual staf gave

those people the very best prospect to access government support,” Mr Wall said. “I think it’s also worth noting … that local governments – councils – are not eligible for JobKeeper payments. hat might have changed our view on how we dealt with our casual staf.” Mr Wall said the council had done its best to honour existing rosters in play when the facilities were shut and was doing its “very, very best” to keep permanent staf employed. “When the current restrictions are lited and we are able to open our facilities again, we will be making phone calls to all of our former

casual staf and asking them to come back,” he said. “We have a list of casual staf that we can call on when, and if, hours are available. “So, again, not an ideal situation. We believed we were doing the very best thing for our casual staf to enable them to seek any government support that was available to them.” he Australian Services Union has called for a federal government direction to local councils to retain all current full-time, part-time and casual employees. It also called for a review of the decision to leave councils out of the JobKeeper arrangements.

Hobsons Bay council will kick of the appeal with a $15,000 donation, raised through the sale of oice furniture. he rapid response grants are for those who need a quick turnaround of about four to ive weeks, to take on challenges and opportunities emerging from the coronavirus crisis. Grants of up to $2000 will be awarded to local groups and organisations that are delivering critical work and to support mental health and wellbeing in the community. “he Hobsons Bay Community Fund is providing support to the groups and organisations struggling to respond to the needs of the most marginalised in our community throughout the COVID-19 crisis,” fund chair Adrian Butera said. Since its inception in 2006, the philanthropic fund grew its corpus from $40,000 to $1 million, from which interest is used to fund small grants for grassroots community organisations. he $12 million Footscray Wharf redevelopment project is expected to start in July ater Maribyrnong council last week awarded an $8 million contract to Simpsons Construction. he project aims to revitalise Footscray’s waterfront with a wharf and promenade between Hopkins Street and Footscray Road. State acts on chemical stockpiles By Laura Michell Victoria’s dangerous goods laws will be reviewed by the state government in a bid to stamp out “unsafe chemical stockpiling”. he government has appointed Andrew Palmer, QC, to conduct the review of the Dangerous Goods Act and associated regulations. he government said the review is the latest step in its response to chemical stockpiling following two large chemical ires in

Tottenham in August 2018 and Campbellield in April 2019. Following the ires, WorkSafe led a blitz on industrial premises across Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs to ensure dangerous chemicals were being stored correctly. he investigations led to the discovery of waste chemicals stockpiled at 13 sites in the northern suburbs last year. A taskforce, led by WorkSafe, has removed more than 13 million litres of stockpiled waste chemicals from the sites so far.

Workplace Safety Minister Jill Hennessy said the review was important to ensure the state’s laws would protect the community from dangers of chemical stockpiling. “We know that the unsafe storing, handling or disposal of dangerous chemicals poses a real threat to local communities,” she said. “his review will make sure dangerous goods laws remain efective and keep Victorian’s safe.” Mr Palmer is expected to submit his inal report and recommendations to the government next year.

Four sites in Epping, three in Craigieburn and three in Campbellield have been cleared, while the inal three sites in Campbellield are currently being cleared. WorkSafe has charged Bradbury Industrial Services with 35 breaches of the Dangerous Goods Act in relation to ive of the sites in Campbellield and Craigieburn. WorkSafe has also charged Graham Leslie White, 58, with 55 ofences over the alleged illegal stockpiling of dangerous goods at four warehouses he occupied in Epping and one in Campbellield. Investigations are continuing.

Zooming in on learning hird year marketing student Jessica Almenara always pictured the moment of relief and exuberance she’d feel walking out of her last class. Now the 25-year-old says she’s more likely to be sitting in front of her computer, donning pyjamas when her three years of hard work inally inish. Ms Almenara attends Victoria University and said things snowballed rapidly when COVID-19 restrictions were introduced. “At VU they do a block learning module, where you focus on one unit for a four-week period,” she said. “We did our irst four-week block as normal, but then ater that everything switched to online.” She admits it’s taken a bit of getting used to. “It’s interesting … I’d never used Zoom before and now all our classes are through it,” she said. “he irst few classes were a bit of an adjustment, but they brought in a new rule to

encourage us to turn our cameras on, which has been nice for interaction. “Other than that, we still have team groups and group work, but that’s all done over messenger and emails, which is a bit of a diference, but still the same structure.” Victoria University vice-chancellor professor Peter Dawkins said the early tracking for online learning was positive. “We’ve really been quite successful through remote learning,” Professor Dawkins said. “Staf and students have adapted extremely well … essentially we’ve converted everything to Zoom, so the teacher has 30 students on screen. Victoria’s state of emergency has been extended to May 11 to help continue to contain the spread of COVID-19. At Altona North, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal and partners run the Blackshaws Road pop-up clinic which was assembled from portables and tents over 10 days. Dr Haikerwal said the respiratory clinic enabled treatment of multiple patients with breathing conditions, including COVID-19, who were unable to be seen in a normal GP practice. Tests can be conducted without a change of personal protective gowns and masks, or shutting down and deep cleaning rooms between patients. he clinic had been the irst in Victoria to start swabbing people for coronavirus in the carpark until it ran out of gear. “here were no masks and then there were no gowns and then there were no swabs, so we had to do something diferent,” Dr Haikerwal said. “What we are doing now is … 50 or 60 tests

Council offers rates relief By Goya Dmytryshchak Rates relief forms part of a $6.5 million support package for residents and businesses afected by COVID-19 that was endorsed at last week’s Maribyrnong council meeting. Councillors described being moved to tears by empty shops and the community experiencing “sheer terror” in response to the pandemic. Residents and businesses can apply to defer paying rates for May and September without penalty interest, and eligible businesses can receive a 50 per cent discount for next quarter.

Cr Gina Huynh told the meeting the council was very proud of being debt-free and hence could ofer support. “We have around 40,000-42,000 rateable properties and most of them have been afected in some way or another,” she said. “We’re trying to help as many people and local businesses as possible but at the same time we’re still trying to maintain some level of normalcy by maintaining upkeep of parks and footpaths and the pool and so on …” Cr Megan Bridger-Darling said the package would help the community get through up to a year of “sheer terror”.

“I do want to point out that we have nearly 5200 business in Maribyrnong that are run from home or that do not employ staf so these are people that are being hit inancially that we’re able to directly assist,” she said. “he numbers are quite staggering when you look at the small geographical footprint of our city and the high population and the density of businesses within that footprint. “I think that this is a really comprehensive start to how we can help our community get through this next six to 12 months.” Cr Cuc Lam said it was “heartbreaking” to see businesses closing.

“Every time I walk past the street and I see the empty shops, I nearly cry every time I walk through that,” she said. Mayor Sarah Carter said that under a separate COVID-19 inancial hardship policy, all ratepayers experiencing inancial hardship could apply for an interest-free payment plan or to defer their rates without penalty interest up to June 30, 2021. “We are in an environment that none of us have ever been in before but with these packages, we hope to support those in our community who are feeling the strain,” she said.

Man dies in freeway crash Police are appealing for dash-cam footage of a multi-vehicle crash that let one man dead on the Princes Freeway at Laverton last week. Emergency services were called to the smash, near the Kororoit Creek Road outbound exit ramp, about 5.50am on Tuesday. Two trucks and several cars were involved in the collision. Police conirmed a man died at the scene. “It is believed a Ford Ranger utility towing a trailer was travelling outbound in the far-let lane on the Princes Freeway when it collided nose-to-tail with three other cars near Kororoit Creek Road about 5.50am,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said. “he collision caused one of the vehicles, a white Kia sedan, to veer across the freeway when two trucks collided with the vehicle. “he male driver of the Kia, who is yet to be formally identiied, died at the scene. Sculpture damaged by vandals One of eight giant sculptures along a popular western suburbs trail has been cut at its base and rolled down an embankment in an act of “wilful destruction”. he discovery last week along the Kororoit Creek Trail at Altona North comes amid reports of youth on trail bikes louting stage three coronavirus restrictions and “terrorising” walkers. Geofrey Ricardo’s Spirits of Time and Place installation features eight monolithic sculptures over a two-kilometre trail along Toyota Way. he Brooklyn-based sculptor was commissioned to do the work as a legacy of Toyota’s Altona manufacturing plant which closed in 2017. he art trail was also to complement restoration work by Friends of

Lower Kororoit Creek, led by president Geof Mitchelmore, who planted the one millionth tree at the site to signal the completion of the Greening the West – 1 Million Trees Project. Mr Mitchelmore and his wife Olga were walking along the creek last week when they saw that one of the artworks, titled Skygazer, had been removed. “We found him [Skygazer] down near the creek and he’s been dragged out now,” Mr Mitchelmore said. “Geofrey’s got him back at the studio, repairing the damage … a cracked torso and cracked arm and cracked skull. “But subsequent to that, we’ve had two more trees taken down in Brooklyn. “Kids are going on a rampage and it’s just getting well and truly out of control here.”

A new park to be developed in Maidstone is set to be named Garrong Park, to acknowledge and relect the indigenous heritage of the area. he name Garrong, meaning wattle in the Woi Wurrung language, has been proposed by the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation. Maribyrnong council last week released the proposed park name for community feedback. he park is being developed as part of a subdivision at 82-96 Hampstead Road. With COVID-19 restrictions forcing the cancellation of traditional Anzac Day services, members of the community were urged to ‘light up the dawn’ from home. “I considered going down to the cenotaph and playing there by myself but, gee, I might have hit a $1600 ine,” Mr Stewart said. “So, I thought I’d better … just stay home and do it in the driveway.” Mr Stewart, who is a member of Victoria Scottish Pipes and Drums, popped a polite note in the letterboxes of his Park Crescent neighbours. “At approximately 5.55am on ANZAC Day 25/4/2020 I will be playing the bagpipes to honour our war veterans,” it read. “Every ANZAC Day for approximately 15+ years I have been playing the lament for Williamstown RSL at the cenotaph but unfortunately due to the coronavirus this will be out of the question due to social gathering rules. “I hope this doesn’t impact you too much.” Mr Stewart said it wasn’t about him – it was “all about our veterans”. New strategy gets things rolling A $30 million bike strategy aimed at improving and connecting routes throughout the municipality over the next decade has been adopted by Maribyrnong council. he Maribyrnong Bicycle Strategy 2020-30 was guided by community feedback and an independent review by the Australian Road Research Board. It aims to improve cycling routes to destinations such as the Footscray education precinct, and between Footscray and Highpoint, Spotswood and Tottenham train stations and Braybrook and Tottenham stations. Cr Simon Crawford told last week’s council meeting it was “quite a bold strategy”. “Over the next 10 years, we’re looking to invest about $30 million,” he said. “[We’ll develop] about 16 kilometres of protected bicycle lanes, more shared paths along the Mariybrnong River, as well as more options for people in the way of bike parking

and trying to improve intersections and all those sorts of things. “I think it’s going to create a bit of a legacy for this council.” Bike West president John Symons described the strategy as a step in the right direction. “here are lots of good elements in it,” he said. “However, there’s still lots of things that can encourage people to get on their bikes, and especially people of all ages. “It’s a great start but there’s still lots to do.”

Setting Sun Film Festival moves online he annual Setting Sun Film Festival, which sells out every year, will go ahead despite COVID-19. In its seventh year, it had been set to screen at Yarraville’s Sun heatre and Kindred Studios before the cinemas were shut down. Now, an abridged version of the festival will be screened online for free from May 6-12. Festival director Anna Bourozikas said the move could attract an even wider audience than usual. “he online festival is a goodwill gesture to our community in these diicult times until we can present the full festival later in the year,” she said. “We are the irst of Melbourne’s ilm festivals to be presenting an online festival ater having to decide whether to cancel or postpone their event because of COVID-19.” She said the online festival could be viewed by people around the world who were in isolation because of the pandemic. “It also gives our overseas ilmmakers a chance to view the festival when ordinarily they wouldn’t,” Ms Bourozikas said. More than 200 submissions were received for this year’s festival which will feature a selection of award-winning ilms in various genres from Australia and overseas. At the end, viewers can vote for Best Film. Finalists will be revealed at the end of the online festival, with winners to be announced when cinemas reopen later this year. Community scrubs up well By Alesha Capone Residents and community centres across the west have come together in a mammoth efort to sew 6000 scrub gowns for front line staf at Western Health. he health organisation, which runs Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown hospitals, has partnered with 20 community centres in the western suburbs to create the much-needed scrubs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Point Cook’s Jasmine Hill, along with her friends Lily and Cassy, kick-started the scrubs campaign. Mrs Hill, who belongs to a Christian church which last month donated facemasks during the pandemic, has friends who work in

hospitals. She said during the pandemic lockdown she had begun thinking about ways to help the community in these “unprecedented times”. She contacted the Western Health Foundation’s community fundraising manager Danny Crabb, who mentioned that hospital staf needed more scrubs. “Us three girls, Lily, Cassy and I, we said, ‘Let’s do this’, so we started to reach out to more people and spread the news,” Mrs Hill said. She said she contacted Point Cook Community Learning Centre for assistance, and soon the Wyndham Park, Iramoo and Arndell Park Community Centres joined in the scrubs campaign. Network West, which provides support to Neighbourhood Houses in the west, also

became involved, and the centres began recruiting volunteers to sew the scrubs. “I’m just very happy we now have more than 200 sewers on board,” Mrs Hill said. “We love the community, we love the hospitals and we just want to help out. “We want to let doctors and nurses know we are behind them.” Spotlight Derrimut has donated 3000 metres of fabric to the campaign. Mrs Hill said the community centres were looking for more donations of material to supply to the volunteers making the scrubs. A Footscray laneway has been sold for $80,000. he owners of 57A and 59 Droop Street approached Maribyrnong council to request a lane abutting their properties be discontinued so they could buy it. A valuation obtained in February last year estimated the market value of the lane at $80,000 plus GST, a report to the council stated. he abutting owners each agreed to pay half to buy the road. Maribyrnong councillor Gina Huynh told last week’s council meeting the city had many such little roads. “hese owners would probably have a lot more use to this than we do, so for that reason, why not, why not sell,” she said. Owner Hitesh Palta, who took over the store early this year, says Groceries on the Run gives residents a safer and smarter way to shop. he initiative started last hursday and will run until May 22. The introduction of Telehealth allows physiotherapists to also connect with clients via secure video conferencing. It is a private and conidential consultation where the physio can discuss, assess and accurately determine an injury and advise the appropriate course of treatment and rehabilitation. Mark, who is also on the Board of Directors of the Australian Physiotherapy Association, explains that the rehabilitation process is enhanced with exercise prescription technology by sharing and demonstrating live videos. “For those clients who need to self-isolate or are unable to attend our clinics, the telehealth

experience and feedback so far has been exceptional.” Despite this, Mark says that with many people rapidly transitioning to self-isolation and working from home, this has presented a number of new physical health concerns for clients. “We are inding people are reporting more posture-related neck and back pain and headaches from a poor workstation set-up,” he says. “In response to this, we have introduced new home workstation assessments to our services. Using Telehealth we perform a worksite analysis and provide recommendations to optimise ergonomic set-up. Our mobile lifestyles mean we like to carry bulky items, either on holiday trips or to move house from one place to another. hese days traditional station wagons have largely been replaced by SUVs and 4WDs on many people’s shopping lists, but there are still those who prefer lower, more stylish wagons that give sedan-like comfort. Mazda may have what is generally the biggest selling SUV in Australia in the CX-5, but still ofers a conventional wagon in the form of the Mazda6 wagon. Our test vehicle was the Sport variant, the “sport’ in the title refers more to parents taking kids to sports, rather to any real sportiness in the car.

Street tree pruning works in Altona Meadows will start on Monday 27 April. The area is within the boundary south of Queen Street between Merton Street and the eastern side of Victoria Street, as well as the area to the east of Victoria Street north of Queen Street. STYLING Mazda6 wagon is an excellent iteration of the Japanese marque’s very successful Kodo shape, particularly at the front. he rear isn’t so much conventional wagon as semi-coupe. It works well from a styling point of view. Inside, the sporting coupe theme continues, with a wide dashboard that has a traditional three-dial arrangement directly in front of the driver. he speedo is in the centre, the tacho to the let and the dial to the right gives fuel and water temperature details. here’s also programmable readings on the right-hand dial.

An enhanced version of the existing GVC vehicle dynamics control technology, it adds yaw moment control for better stability and composure when cornering. he feel through the steering is more limo-like than sports-like and we feel that’s what the typical buyer will prefer. he ride/comfort compromise leans in the comfort direction and this make an excellent long distance touring car. Road noise is muted nicely on concrete motorways, but coarse-chip bitumen does create more sound than we like, which isn’t unusual in imported cars so it’s barely a criticism of the big Mazda.
