Sole traders ind a way By Tate Papworth A Cairnlea travel agent has turned to selling shoes from his agency to avoid inancial ruin. Cyrus Mil and his business partner Dimos Melifronides took over the business in November. hings started well with a loyal employee and customer base, but four months later the world became a much diferent place. “We were going really well but these
COVID-19 restrictions came in and really hit the industry hard,” Mr Mil said. “We had to stand down four staf members and we have just as many working at home and on reduced hours.” he store remains open to ield questions from customers and to try to help get stranded travellers home, but Mr Mil said it isn’t enough. “We still have to pay rent and we really wanted to make sure we’re still standing when
this is all over,” Mr Mil said. “So we spoke to a few friends who own clothing stores and they sold us some shoes and shirts and we’ve started selling them out of the store.” By appointment, the duo opens the agency and sells the shoes to interested buyers. “It looks a little unusual … people walk in to a travel agency and see shoes and clothing, but what else can we do? “It’s actually gone alright so far, we’ve sold a few. We’re just trying to survive.”
Mr Mil said he was in the dark as to whether he was eligible for government assistance. “Obviously we’ve seen lots of information on the government packages, but the problem is we don’t know what’s happening. “We only took over this business four months ago and our accountant isn’t sure if we’re eligible for anything at this point. “It’s frustrating because we can see there’s help out there, but no one can give us an answer.”

Property price hit an unknown By Tate Papworth A leading real estate agent says house prices could potentially drop by 10 per cent in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. John Keating, of Keating Real Estate, said it was too early to tell how much prices would drop, but it would be naive to think they won’t. “Turnover is down, but in regards to prices, it’s too early to call. here seems to be a sense of inevitability that there will be a correction,” Mr Keating said. “he impact is likely to be varied, but for
residential median house sale prices, there’s a real possibility of it coming back 5-10 per cent.” Jim Hatzimosis, at Barry Plant Real Estate, said the current dilemma is similar to issues the market faced before the virus struck. “It’s a luid situation changing by the day,” Mr Hatzimosis said. “here’s still transactions taking place, but the volume of sales has dropped of.” Restriction ushered in as part of the government response to slow the spread of COVID-19 put a stop to in-person auctions and open house inspections.

Mr Hatzimosis said while that’s had its challenges, the industry hasn’t shut down. “We’re working with less buyers, but the ones we are working with are keen to buy. here’s less inspections, but a high quality of inspectors,” he said. Nancy Crupi of YPA Melton said it had been
a major adjustment. “For us it’s been about changing the way we take people through a property,” Ms Crupi said. “For example we take a husband and wife through a property one at a time.” She said it was a bit of waiting game. “A lot of people are holding back in selling so we’re just waiting to see what happens. “Buyer activity is great … there’s a lot of good buyers out there at the moment, but they’re looking at less stock. “It’s deinitely going to be at least May 11 before we can have auctions and open houses.”

Lights and sirens for birthday boy Riley Murphy Wilson may not have been able to celebrate his eighth birthday with school friends, but he did have one very special guest stop by. Riley, a huge fan of Highway Patrol, was given the surprise of his life when his favourite TV Cop, Rob Jones arrived at his house in his V8 Police car to help celebrate his birthday. Riley’s mother Jacqui Wilson said it was a heartwarming way to celebrate her son’s special day.
“He was a bit shocked and excited. hey came and lashed the sirens for him and said ‘happy birthday’ over the loudspeaker,” Ms Wilson said. “He [Rob] then got out and spoke to him for a few minutes and took a few photos.” Ms Wilson said the family reached out to the local police asking if they could help cheer their boy in the midst of COVID-19 restrictions. “We just sent an email to the police station asking if they could do it, just to cheer him up, because he has been in lockdown since all this
COVID-19 started happening,” she said. “We didn’t expect anything, but we got a response from the police station and it went from there.” It may not be the birthday Riley had planned, but it’s one he won’t soon forget. “Riley would like to say a big thank you to the police for coming … and he’d also like to thank everyone who said happy birthday to him.”
he Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium, St Albans Community Centre (STACC) and the West Sunshine Community Centre could be turned into mass hospitals if the COVID-19 crisis overwhelms the health system. he state government recently called on all councils to provide it with a pandemic plan. Brimbank council infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the plan covers a number of situations. “[It] details council’s role in pandemic planning to assist in reducing the impacts of a pandemic and to provide support and recovery assistance throughout the duration of a pandemic,” he said. “his includes the need to ensure council continues delivering essential local services.” As part of the plan, the council was asked to identify large areas which could act as relief centres. “Council also has a number of facilities that are designated as relief centres in an emergency response, which include the Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium, St Albans Community Centre (STACC) and the West Sunshine Community Centre. “Council has received no requests for assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) at this stage in relation to access to facilities. However, council will continue to work closely with DHHS to provide local responses to the COVID-19 pandemic where required.” Tate Papworth

Ode carries on he Ode of Remembrance played out deiantly on Anzac Day as a mark of respect to those who have made the ultimate sacriice. Anzac Day may have looked diferent, with COVID-19 restrictions putting a stop to public gatherings, but the Sunshine RSL still found a way. RSL president Gary Collins said creative solutions were put in place to make sure appropriate respect was given to the occasion. “We encouraged everyone to stand out the front of their homes with a candle at 6am,” Mr Collins said. “But at the RSL itself, we were told we couldn’t really do anything. So we arranged for

COVID-19 fallout ‘unprecedented’ By Tate Papworth Melbourne Airport has revealed the devastating impact COVID-19 has had on the business. Passenger numbers in March were down by 44 per cent compared to the same time last year. he airport recorded its lowest international passenger igure since June 2010 and its lowest domestic numbers since February 2004. Chief executive Lyell Strambi described the pandemic as the worst crisis to hit the airport in 30 years. “he devastation that COVID-19 is having on the entire aviation industry is unparalleled,”
he said. “Tourism, particularly air travel, was one of the irst sectors hit and we expect it to be one of the last industries to emerge from restrictions. “he international traveller market was completely devastated … we recorded the worst year-on-year international growth in the airport’s history, surpassing all other shocks to date including 9/11 and SARS.” Mr Strambi said the March igures mask the full extent of COVID-19 and the trend for the end of the month suggests April is on a trajectory for a 97 per cent drop compared to the same time last year.
“he decline in travellers not only afects airlines but airports as well, as airports collect aeronautical fees on a per-passenger basis. “Of course, the loss in passengers is felt many times over, it’s not just one less person lying but also one less person buying a meal or cofee, one less purchasing retail items and one less catching transport.” He said the crisis facing Virgin Airlines, which went into voluntary administration last week, was also cause for major concern and called for action. “he Virgin situation is potentially another seismic shock to domestic aviation in Australia,
on top of the demand destruction brought about by COVID-19. “We know aviation is resilient, but the combination of the health pandemic and the economic crisis is unprecedented.” Mr Strambi said the airport would remain open to support essential travel and to help bring Australians home. It would also ensure goods, including medical supplies, could move in and out of Victoria. However Mr Strambi warned it may be some time until things bounce back fully.
Call to protect creek he banks of the Kororoit Creek have swelled with walkers, cyclists and people with their four-legged friends as they turn to nature during COVID-19 restrictions. Now the group that has spent years caring for the creek is calling on newcomers to help it protect the waterway and surrounds. Friends of Kororoit Creek president Jessica Gerger said it was important the area was respected. “When we are down working on the creek we see many more people walking, dog walking, cycling, taking photographs, bird watching. It is wonderful to see,” she said. “It almost feels as if the creek paths have become the main walkways of Brimbank. “People are generally respecting the creek – but unfortunately there are huge amounts of dog poo everywhere. People might not realise that dog poo is very bad for creek health.”

Call for action on landill ire By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has moved to ensure work to extinguish the underground ires at the Kealba Landill is still a priority. Residents have been forced to endure a “toxic chemical” smell which has been emanating from the site for six months. Investigations uncovered ires in two of the landill’s four cells. Barro Group, the operator of the site, had until the end of March to table a remediation plan with the EPA. However the EPA has sent the report back, calling for an improved public consultation
component. Residents say they are fed up with the back and forth and want the problem solved. Brimbank council has moved to escalate the matter. Cr Tachos said that in troubling times, the community deserved to feel safe. “In light of the COVID-19 restrictions placing residents in an even more vulnerable position – with movement restrictions – to greater exposure, and with no current active air monitoring, the community is extremely concerned and has a right to know that the air they breath and their children is free of toxic pollutants and contaminants from the hotspot that may harm their health,” she said. “Madam mayor we ask for transparent reporting via a community engagement
strategy that is enacted as soon as possible.” Last week Star Weekly revealed that air monitoring at the Kealba landill site had stopped ater equipment installed by the EPA was attacked by vandals. he EPA said the equipment would be replaced in the near future. “Eforts are underway to replace the equipment and recommence air quality testing as soon as possible,” a spokesman said. “Additional security and other measures are being considered to help minimise the prospect of future vandal attacks, protect replacement equipment and underpin continuity of reporting.”

Students zoom in on new classroom hird year marketing student Jessica Almenara always pictured the moment of relief and exuberance she’d feel walking out of her last class. Now the 25-year-old says she’s more likely to be sitting in front of her computer, donning pyjamas when her three years of hard work inally inish. Ms Almenara attends Victoria University and said things snowballed rapidly. “At VU they do a block learning module, where you focus on one unit for a four-week period,” she said. “We did our irst four-week
block as normal, but then ater that everything switched to online.” She admits it’s taken a bit of getting used to. “It’s interesting … I’d never used Zoom before and now all our classes are through it,” she said. “he irst few classes were a bit of an adjustment, but they brought in a new rule to encourage us to turn our cameras on, which has been nice for interaction.” “Other than that we still have team groups and group work, but that’s all done over messenger and emails, which is a bit of a
diference, but still the same structure.” Victoria University vice-chancellor professor Peter Dawkins said the early tracking for online learning was positive. “We’ve really been quite successful through remote learning,” Professor Dawkins said. “Staf and students have adapted extremely well … essentially we’ve converted everything to Zoom, so the teacher has 30 students onscreen. It allows for lots on interaction and problem solving, which ties in well.”
Newspapers will be given a helping hand to continue publishing during the COVID-19 pandemic. he state government has announced a $4.7 million emergency support package for regional print media, which was developed in consultation with the Victorian Country Press Association. he government said it will book one page of print advertising and digital advertising in more than 100 regional outlets each week for six months to help local papers survive. he advertising boost will also help the government get the message out to Victorians that we all have a role to play in slowing the spread of the virus by staying home, protecting our health system and saving lives. Premier Daniel Andrews said the immediate and reliable source of income will help newspapers – which are the public record of towns and regions throughout Victoria – get through the worst of the crisis and rebuild. “We’re giving regional papers the certainty and support they need to keep writing, keep printing and keep employing Victorians,” he said. “We need to get the message out to every corner of the state – stay home, protect the health system and save lives. his investment will help us do that. “Coronavirus does not discriminate – so it’s vital every Victorian knows what to do to protect themselves and their loved ones, wherever they live.”

Here in the City of Melton, infection numbers have remained low and that’s a credit to all of you who are doing the right thing. I’m really proud to see our community prioritising health and staying safe. Please keep up the good work and remember, this strange new normal is only temporary but of course very necessary right now. Immunisation sessions continue Is your child due for their immunisations, or are you eligible for a free flu vaccination? Our staff are following the latest advice on staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and we’re asking those attending our immunisation sessions to follow some precautions as well.
Council’s regular immunisation sessions are still running and we’ve scheduled additional sessions to help meet the demand for the flu vaccine. During the COVID-19 pandemic, you can access these sessions at the Melton Community Hall and the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre. All other centres are closed for now.
The sessions are for well babies, parents, and individuals, so if you’re feeling sick, please stay home. Please minimise the number of people attending – only one parent to attend per baby/child being vaccinated, and avoid bringing siblings.
Those eligible for our free 2020 influenza (flu) vaccine, under the National Immunisation Program are: • children aged 6 months to under 5 years of age • all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people • people with certain chronic medical illnesses including chronic asthma, heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease • adults 65 years of age and over • pregnant women

Fires prompt law review By Laura Michell Victoria’s dangerous goods laws will be reviewed by the state government in a bid to stamp out “unsafe chemical stockpiling”. he government has appointed Andrew Palmer, QC, to conduct the review of the Dangerous Goods Act and associated regulations. he government said the review is the latest step in its response to chemical stockpiling following large chemical ires in Tottenham in August 2018 and Campbellield in April 2019. Following the ires, WorkSafe led a blitz on industrial premises across Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs to ensure dangerous chemicals were being stored correctly. he investigations led to the discovery of waste chemicals stockpiled at 13 sites in the

northern suburbs last year. A taskforce, led by WorkSafe, has removed more than 13 million litres of stockpiled waste chemicals from the sites so far. Four sites in Epping, three in Craigieburn and three in Campbellield have been cleared, while the inal three sites in Campbellield are currently being cleared. WorkSafe has charged Bradbury Industrial Services with 35 breaches of the Dangerous Goods Act in relation to ive of the sites in Campbellield and Craigieburn. It has also charged Graham Leslie White, 58, with 55 ofences in relation to the alleged
illegal stockpiling of dangerous goods at four warehouses he occupied in Epping and one in Campbellield. Investigations are continuing. Workplace Safety Minister Jill Hennessy said the review was important to ensure the state’s laws would protect the community from dangers of chemical stockpiling. “We know that the unsafe storing, handling or disposal of dangerous chemicals poses a real threat to local communities,” she said. “his review will make sure dangerous goods laws remain efective and keep Victorian’s safe. “Mr Palmer brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this important review, which will safeguard all Victorians.” Mr Palmer is expected to submit his inal report and recommendations to the government next year, with opportunities for public comment and stakeholder engagement to begin later this year.
Police target family violence Victoria Police has unveiled an operation to tackle family violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of Operation Ribbon, members of Victoria Police’s dedicated Family Violence Investigation Unit will reach out to Victorians who they know are at risk of family violence. he operation was launched last week amid concerns that social-distancing restrictions in place because othe coronavirus may make it more diicult for victims to reach out for help. Oicers will check on the wellbeing of families across the state, as well as identifying and following up with known family violence perpetrators to make sure they’re complying with any conditions placed on them by the courts or family violence management plans. Incidents of family violence in Brimbank rose 5.7 per cent for the year ending December 2019, according to the Crime Statistics Agency. A total of 2904 incidents were recorded across municipality – in 2168 incidents, women were the victim. Women aged between 25-35 were the most afected, with 730 incidents, while women aged 35-44 were also highly represented with 635 incidents. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville said it was vital police continued to focus on the problem. “Family violence doesn’t take a break while we work to slow the spread of coronavirus – that’s why police are out there every day, checking on family violence victims and perpetrators,” she said. Sew much help for health workers Residents and community centres across the west have come together in a mammoth efort to sew 6000 scrub gowns for front line staf at Western Health. he health organisation, which runs Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown hospitals, has partnered with 20 community centres in the western suburbs to create the much-needed scrubs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Point Cook’s Jasmine Hill, along with her friends Lily and Cassy, kick-started the scrubs campaign. Mrs Hill, who belongs to a Christian church which last month donated facemasks during the pandemic, has friends who work in hospitals. had begun thinking about ways to help the community in these “unprecedented times”. She contacted the Western Health Foundation’s community fundraising manager Danny Crabb, who mentioned that hospital staf needed more scrubs. “Us three girls, Lily, Cassy and I, we said, ‘Let’s do this’, so we started to reach out to more people and spread the news,” Mrs Hill said. She said she contacted Point Cook Community Learning Centre for assistance, and soon the Wyndham Park, Iramoo and Arndell Park Community Centres joined in the scrubs campaign. Network West, which provides support to Neighbourhood Houses in the west, also became involved, and the centres began recruiting volunteers to sew the scrubs.
“I’m just very happy we now have more than 200 sewers on board,” Mrs Hill said. “We love the community, we love the hospitals and we just want to help out. “We want to let doctors and nurses know we are behind them.” Spotlight Derrimut has donated 3000 metres of fabric to the campaign. Mrs Hill said the community centres were looking for more donations of material to supply to the volunteers making the scrubs. People with diabetes are being urged not to skip medical appointments during the coronavirus crisis. Diabetes Victoria said it was crucial people with a chronic health condition such as diabetes continue their care via face-to-face or telehealth appointments. Chief executive Craig Bennett said continuing with the “annual cycle of care” would help people with diabetes identify any health concerns early and discuss the best treatment options with doctors and diabetes health professionals. “Without regular checks, diabetes can lead to complications that can afect the whole body. Diabetes increases a person’s risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision or loss of a limb,” he said. “Recently, there have been reports that people with diabetes are delaying their health. “Now we have more options than ever to engage with our health professionals who are using telehealth to consult with patients who don’t require or can’t organise a face-to-face visit.” Mr Bennett said the “annual cycle of care” for people living with diabetes was made up of a number of important health checks including blood glucose levels, blood pressure, foot assessment, eye examination, kidney health, blood fats, weight, exercise, nutrition and a review of medications. he controversial garbags, introduced into Sunshine by the last council, have inally been scrapped and are now illegal rubbish receptacles in the City of Sunshine. A Disposal of Refuse (Amendment) By-law was gazetted on 2 April which now prevents the use of garbags, whether plastic or paper type, for rubbish receptacles.
Sunshine’s parks and recreation department staf are working in primitive conditions and the city’s street tree pruning program is 18 months behind due to funding restrictions.
A Sunshine family has fallen prey to a scam by two men posing as police oicers. Detective Segeant Gerry Rudkins, of the Sunshine CIU, said the family was devastated at having been duped out of thousands of dollars.
Sunshine residents have made their point very clear they do not, under any circumstances, want a landill built near their homes. Ater years of putting up with dust, noise, large trucks blocking their streets and disruptions to their lives, the residents say enough is enough.

By Tate Papworth Western Health staf working on the frontline in the ight against COVID-19 won’t lack personal protective equipment. St Albans’ generous Quang Minh Temple community recently donated 10,000 medical masks, 5000 gloves and 50 plastic protection masks to Western Health and local nursing homes. Dr Nhan Phuc Pham said the community didn’t want doctors, nurses or health care workers to go without masks and were concerned when they heard about a lack of supply.

Six neonatal cameras that allow families remote viewing of their babies were also purchased with the money raised. In January, the Vietnamese community helped rattle tins at the St Albans Lunar Festival, raising a staggering $20,000 to help support those impacted by the summer’s devastating bushires.

Something old … something new: that just about sums up the Santa Fe Active as a no-nonsense wagon at a family-friendly price under $50K. For example, following keyless entry to the vehicle with fob tucked away, you have to step back in time, fumble for the key, slot it into the steering column ignition and turn the switch to start the engine. It’s then that the 21st century gets a look-in with the Santa Fe featuring much of the latest automotive technology, including Hyundai’s SmartSense package of safety stuf. Opening the innings for the Santa Fe squad is the Active petrol automatic featuring the latest Hyundai 3.5-litre V6 motor driving the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, for $43,000, plus on-road costs. hereater follows a line-up of petrol and diesel all-wheel drive wagons up to the Highlander 2.2-litre diesel automatic AWD at $60,500 (plus ORCs). I ended up with a middle-order Active 2.2-litre diesel automatic AWD, with a $46,000 price tag, on test.

Also absent is embedded satellite navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be called up via a mobile phone connection. Wireless phone charging has gone missing too. Featured as standard in Santa Fe Active and Elite models is Hyundai Auto Link, a smartphone app that allows the owner to stay connected to the car. Included is driving info such as current distance, current travel time, today’s distance, today’s travel time, fuel
eiciency, and fuel consumption; parked vehicle location and parking time reminders. Roadside assistance can be contacted immediately.
