Family farewells ‘our rock’ By Tate Papworth he family of the 15th Victorian to succumb to COVID-19 has issued a plea for people to take the virus threat seriously ater they had to watch the “larger than life” grandfather take his last breath via a video call. Hillside man Giuseppe Franzoni, 84, died at the Sunshine Hospital on Friday. His son Frank Franzoni said the family was struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of their “rock”. “It was quite sudden … he fainted one day, but he didn’t tell anyone about it,” Mr Franzoni said. “We’re a close family and are always in contact but I hadn’t seen him since restrictions came in. he day he got sick I hadn’t seen him for maybe four weeks, but touched base daily, even if just for 60 seconds. I just needed to know he was safe. “On hursday night he went to bed at 6.30 because he felt cold. He fainted on the Friday.” Ater receiving a worried call from his brother on April 4, Mr Franzoni called his father. “He’d been out shopping to buy essentials and was sitting down when we spoke,’’ he said. ’”I asked if he needed me to call an ambulance and he said he didn’t. “But he didn’t sound 100 per cent, so I called back an hour later and he asked me to call for [an ambulance]. I hung up and arranged for one and that was the last time I ever got to speak to my father.” An ambulance arrived at Mr Franzoni’s home and rushed him to hospital a short time later. He was heavily sedated and unable to communicate with his family. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 two days later.
His family, unable to see him, was given information on his condition by telephone. “I rang on Wednesday and was told he may have turned the corner and there was a good chance he’d be ine. His lungs and kidneys were going in the right direction,” Mr Franzoni said. “But on hursday that changed and I was told his lungs had deteriorated … I was too scared to call on Friday, but I did anyway. “I called at about 11am and was told the hospital was actually trying to get in touch with me. hey told me the end was near and if we could, we should come in.” Giuseppe Franzoni died 90 minutes ater that phone call, his family watching through a video stream set up by hospital staf. “I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.” he family must now decide on two people who won’t be able to attend the funeral. “here are only 12 of us, but only 10 can attend the funeral,’’ Mr Franzoni said. “How on earth do you decide on two people who can’t say goodbye to their grandfather? “He was absolutely larger than life. He loved his family and would travel to the end of the world for them. “We told him to stay home, but he told one of my brothers that if he got the virus, he’d die a happy man. “I just want everyone to know this is a serious threat. I’ve seen what it can do, so please … respect the restrictions.“ Giuseppe Franzoni leaves behind family including three sons and six grandchildren, and a lifetime of memories. ’”He loved his family, sports, and Australia,” his son said. - with he Age

Ratepayers question rate relief By Tate Papworth Brimbank ratepayers have questioned how long the council can continue charging full price for rates if, as expected, COVID-19 restrictions continue for a prolonged period. Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association president John Jennison said the council was in an unenviable position. “Currently we’re not getting full value for rates because a number of facilities just aren’t open,” he said. “On one hand, you can take a moralistic approach and ask what else the council can

- John Jennison actually do under these circumstances. On the other hand, you can compare it to an insurance company charging premium for a car which you’re not able to use.” Mr Jennison said that while relief packages brought in were much-needed, longer term
thinking was also required. “You wouldn’t want to see it going too much longer at the present way,” he said. “here needs to be better explanation on what’s happening and where the money is going … an explanation of what leisure centre and library staf, among others, are doing with the facilities closed.” Despite numerous closures for facilities, the council is yet to stand down any employees. Mr Jennison said an extension to the rates period may be a fairer way to treat ratepayers. “One of the easiest things to look at may be the rates period itself … perhaps instead of
a locked 12 month period they could ofer 14 months. his isn’t a short term thing and while there’s plans in place for immediate survival, there also needs to be a plan for rest of year and beyond.” he council recently passed a rat of relief measure to help ratepayers who ind themselves in inancial trouble. he cornerstone feature of the package was expanding the council’s inancial hardship policy to include all rateable properties in Brimbank, not just residential properties. A hold was also placed on interest for debt accumulated during the coronavirus pandemic.

She said she hopes to get the masks out to those performing essential services within the community. “Whilst we make no medical claims about our beautiful masks, they will certainly help to stop the wearer from spreading anything and they’ll look very stylish too,” she said. “We also want to donate our reusable, unique and completely sustainable face masks to the local ‘meals on wheels’ and charity organisations.”

A Kealba-based drapery business on the cusp of inancial ruin has turned things around and is giving back to the community. Easter Sunday blaze

Fireighters were called to a house ire in Sunshine West just after 10.30am on Easter Sunday. Crews arrived on scene within ive minutes to ind the house on Mourell Street engulfed in lames, with smoke coming from the roof. The blaze was brought under control within 22 minutes. It is believed the ire was caused by an electrical fault. Four occupants were evacuated and assessed by paramedics at the scene, two were transported to hospital for further observation.

Home gym the right it Inventive staf and students of Victoria University have started using chairs and books as make-shit gym equipment. With the VU itness centres forced to close to the public due to COVID-19, staf and students have launched online workout sessions. Every weekday at noon, dozens of people – some accompanied by their children – join in the 40-minute virtual workouts, which are run through Zoom. he participants can all see each other on screen, and can even send questions to their instructor. Team trainer Brooke Olsen runs sessions from her Werribee garage, which she has set up as a gym. She focuses on a diferent theme every day.
“We wanted to ofer a service that would keep the VU community happy and positive while providing them with a healthy and fun way to connect to others,” Ms Olsen said. Within less than a week, 135 people registered for the virtual workout sessions, which will continue until VU’s sport centres can re-open. Virus vigilance is still key By Tate Papworth he number of COVID-19 cases in Brimbank crept above 30 last week. While authorities across the country are pleased with the slowed rate of cases, Victoria’s chief health oicer Brett Sutton urged the community to stay vigilant and not erode the gains made in slowing the spread of the virus. “Now is not the time for complacency. We still have a long way to go,” Professor Sutton said. “While we are starting to see some improvement in the rate of transmission, that

rate could climb quickly if we lose focus. “Everyone who’s unwell must isolate themselves and everyone who’s been told they’re in quarantine, either as a returned traveller or close contact, must do so.” While Professor Sutton urged vigilance, he
said there was also room for optimism. Speaking on 3AW last hursday, Professor Sutton said stage four restrictions mooted by the state government may not be needed. “I remain optimistic that we don’t have to go there,” he said. He also hinted that schools could reopen in weeks if case numbers continue to drop. “I don’t rule anything in or out. We are always reviewing, we have a state of emergency until May 11, that’s a natural point to have a really robust review, but who knows what the next couple of weeks will bring,” he said.
“If we have driven numbers down to zero, you know, that’s got to be on the cards but it does involve everyone doing the right thing.” As of hursday there were 32 cases of COVID-19 in Brimbank. Across the state there had been 132 conirmed cases of the virus that may have been acquired through community transmission. hirty-nine people are in hospital, including 18 patients in intensive care. A total of 14 people had died from COVID-19 in Victoria at the time Star Weekly went to press.
Resumes for the times A Hillside man is on a mission to help make the community more employable. Youth encouraged to speak up By Tate Papworth Mission Australia wants Brimbank’s youth to make their voice heard. he Christian charity has extended the opening period of its annual youth survey to encourage as many young people aged between 15-19 to have their say. Now in its 19th year, the survey is the largest online survey of its kind in Australia and provides a snapshot into the experiences and views of young people. his year, in the midst of the COVID-19

public health challenge, Mission Australia state leader Michele Leonard said the survey was more important than ever. “In this rapidly changing world, young voices matter. Now more than ever, we need to hear from Brimbank young people about the issues that are afecting them,” she said.
“During this period where many young people are adapting to change, it’s important that they have meaningful opportunities … to share their thoughts, concerns and aspirations. “In times of increasing uncertainty it is crucial we take the time to listen to what young people have to say on issues that afect them, their networks and our nation.” In 2019, more than 25,000 young people completed the survey across the country. Mental health, the environment and equity and discrimination were raised as the most important issues facing Australia at the time.
Survey results also found that only about one in 15 young Victorians feel they have a voice all of the time in public afairs. “In a climate where young people are actively seeking out opportunities to make their views known, the Youth Survey 2020 ofers a safe and reliable platform to speak up. heir valuable insights provide up-to-date evidence to inform advocacy and policy change on the issues,” Ms Leonard said. College lab leads charge Caroline Chisholm Catholic College’s chemistry lab resembled a television studio more than a classroom last week. With a large number of students learning from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the school’s head of learning for science Marnie Bates said there were signiicant concerns for year 12 students. “We were really nervous when this all started unfolding because we didn’t quite know how we’d get the practical component of year 12 chemistry done for the students,” Ms Bates said. “It occurred to me that Edrolo, Australia’s leading provider of online textbooks for VCE students, might be able to help us out with videoing the prac, so the students could watch it back and gather the data they need.” Ms Bates said Edrolo jumped at the chance to lend a hand and what started as a simple idea quickly became a production.

Testing clinic irst in the west By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona North medical practice has become the irst GP respiratory clinic testing for coronavirus in Melbourne’s west, as part of the federal government’s roll-out of 100 such pop-up clinics Australia-wide. It comes as Health Minister Jenny Mikakos last week announced Victoria would have the widest testing criteria of COVID-19 in Australia. She said anyone experiencing fever and respiratory symptoms such as a cough or shortness of breath could ring ahead to be tested. As of Wednesday, Victoria had 1299 cases. here have been 14 deaths statewide, while 39 people remain in hospital, including 18 in intensive care. here were 32 cases in Brimbank. Victoria’s state of emergency has been extended to May 11. At Altona North, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal and partners run the Blackshaws Road pop-up clinic which was assembled from portables and tents over 10 days. Dr Haikerwal said the respiratory clinic enabled treatment of multiple patients with breathing conditions, including COVID-19, who were unable to be seen in a normal GP practice. Tests can be conducted without a change of personal protective gowns and masks, or shutting down and deep cleaning rooms between patients. he clinic had been the irst in Victoria to start swabbing people for coronavirus in the carpark until it ran out of gear. “here were no masks and then there were no gowns and then there were no swabs, so we had to do something diferent,” Dr Haikerwal said.

“What we are doing now is … 50 or 60 tests with only one or two sets of gowns, one set of masks, and all you’re changing is your gloves.” Dr Haikerwal said more coronavirus cases were expected to be detected as testing restrictions were relaxed.
“here’s more people now who are eligible for the test so there’s more coming forward to be tested,” he said. “When this whole thing started, the joke was Indonesia is the safest place in the world to be because they weren’t reporting any cases, but they weren’t testing anybody.

Life in lockdown Residents across the north and west have been getting creative and spreading the message of hope during the COVID-19 lockdown. On our Facebook pages, Star Weekly last week asked readers to submit photos of what they have been doing during the pandemic, and we were overwhelmed by the responses. Kathy has set up an LED multi-coloured snowball tree and some signs in her front windows. “I run a succulent business and a recycle project from home, and have plenty of admin to do, but of course my Gumtree ads are paused and there are no customers coming to my door,” Kathy said. “But I wanted to ind some way I could catch the attention and cheer my neighbours and passersby. “I racked my brains and realised that as I had two large, full-length windows in the front of my house, I could do something there. “As daylight fades, I turn the tree on and it twinkles away until I go to bed. “I often wake before daylight, so I switch it on again … for the many workers who leave home early and drive past.” Kathy has encouraged other residents to decorate their windows and doors with messages of hope.

Nas, who sent in the images, said: “We have had many cases where people say it brought them smiles. “The community have gone out and purchased chalks and wrote on the footpath. Each time the rain washes it away, we go and write again. Lockdown recipes Looking for a way to pass the time at home? Why not try working on your culinary skills? A Facebook community, #lockdownlarderAustralia, is rapidly building with people showing of their latest creations. We picked a few for you to try. Renée Biewer’s homemade ricotta gnocchi with asparagus pesto Ricotta gnocchi: 400g ricotta cheese ¼ cup parmesan cheese 1 cup plain lour 1 large egg 1 egg yolk ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper
For the dipping sauce: 1 small pot natural low-fat yoghurt 10 fresh mint leaves ¼ cucumber ½ clove garlic Juice of ½ lime For the meatballs: 250g lean minced lamb Juice of 1 lime 1 small clove garlic 1cm fresh root ginger Small handful fresh coriander leaves 1½ tsp curry powder
Asparagus pesto: 500g asparagus spears ¼ cup slithered almonds ½ cup parmesan cheese 3 cloves garlic 1 pinch crushed red pepper ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 4 rashers bacon ¼ cup shaved parmesan 1 lemon Ricotta gnocchi: 1. Place the ricotta on a triple layer of paper towels. Cover it with another triple layer and press down, releasing liquid from the cheese. Scoop the cheese into a bowl and weigh out exactly 8 ounces for the gnocchi. If there is any leftover, use it for another dish! (or spread it on bread. Mmmm) 2. In a bowl, stir together the ricotta, 3/4 cup lour, grated parmesan, beaten eggs, salt and pepper until just combined – using a rubber spatula. Add the remaining lour 1 tablespoon at a time until the dough comes together, form a ball. Press it into a disk on a loured surface and cut it into four equal pieces. Take each piece and roll it into a log about 16 to 18 inches long. Cut 1-inch pieces with a sharp knife. 3. To cook, bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Once it’s simmering, add the gnocchi and cook about 2 to 3 minutes, until it loats for about 30 seconds. Remove with a large slotted spoon or sieve to drain. Reserve about 1/2 cup of the pasta water. Asparagus pesto: 1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Cut the asparagus spears into thirds. Take a handful of asparagus and set it off to the side – we will toss the spears and pieces in the pasta. Add the remaining pieces to the boiling water and cook

until slightly tender but still bright green, about 5 to 6 minutes. Strain the asparagus. 2. Add the asparagus, toasted almonds, garlic, grated parmesan and crushed red pepper to a food processor. Pulse until the mixture begins to come together, then stream the olive oil in while the processor is running. Taste and season with salt and pepper if desired. (Note: this will make enough pesto that you will have some leftover – keep it in a sealed jar in the fridge and use it on everything! Toast, eggs, salads, sandwiches, chicken, shrimp, etc!) 3. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and add the chopped bacon. Cook until completely crispy and the fat is rendered. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and place it on a paper towel to drain excess grease. Remove all but 1 tablespoon of the bacon fat from the skillet. Add the asparagus pieces that you set aside and toss. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until slightly tender. To serve: Serve the pasta, add it to the skillet with the asparagus. Toss the hot gnocchi with the pesto and a touch of pasta water – I add about 1/4 cup irst until I get the consistency I like. Add to a bowl with the asparagus pieces and spritz with lemon. Sprinkle the bacon on top. Top with shaved parmesan and a lemon wedge.
To make the dipping sauce: 1. Place the yoghurt in a bowl. 2. Wash the mint leaves, chop them inely and add to the bowl. 3. Wash, dry and chop the cucumber and add to the bowl. 4. Peel and inely chop or crush the garlic and add to the bowl. 5. Add the juice of ½ lime and stir. 6. Refrigerate. To make the meat balls: 1. Place the minced meat in a mixing bowl with 2 teaspoons of the lime juice and stir well. 2. Peel and inely chop or crush the garlic. 3. Peel and grate the ginger. 4. Wash, dry and chop the fresh coriander leaves.
5. In a small bowl, mix the chopped garlic and grated ginger with the curry powder and the remaining lime juice. 6. Add the spice paste to the meat and add the chopped fresh coriander leaves. 7. Using wet hands, divide the meat and roll into 16 small balls. 8. Thread the balls onto 4 skewers and refrigerate until ready to cook. 9. When ready to cook, pre-heat the grill. 10. Grill the spicy lamb balls under a medium heat, turning often, until cooked right through. 11. Serve with the dipping sauce.
Renée Biewer’s Za’atar Lamb Burgers with fried zucchini, baby spinach, tomato, onions and yoghurt Za’atar burgers: Mix all ingredients together, make into patties, refrigerate for an hour before frying. 500g lamb mine 1 red onion ½ cup continental parsley, fresh 4 cloves garlic 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander ½ tsp ground cinnamon 1 tbsp tomato paste 1 egg ½ cup breadcrumbs, fresh if you have them ½ cup plain lour Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Burger illing: 100ml natural yoghurt 2 zucchini 4 bake-at-home long rolls 1 bag baby spinach 2 tomatoes Make the burgers, cook the rolls (or lightly toast any rolls you have on hand), grill the zucchini, assemble and eat. I would spread yoghurt in the bottom and top, mum would do one side, the other with hummus and start with spinach, tomatoes, patties, zucchini. (I add raw onion because I like it).

1. Bring all ingredients to the boil and pour over your choice of vegetables/ fruit and seal. This amount of pickling liquid was plenty enough for all three of these jars. 2. The eggplant and tomato were grilled over ire for approx 10 minutes irst, just to change it up and for extra lavour. The cucumber was fresh. 3. I threw some garlic and onion in for lavour and prettiness!
We’ve particularly been missing going out for brunch, so today we made our own. 1. Peel and grate 300g of sweet potato. Combine potato, two eggs and salt and pepper. 2. Heat 1cm of oil in a frying pan and when hot add your potato mix in whatever shape you’d like your rosti (we used a round pastry cutter). Vandals strike air monitors By Tate Papworth Air monitoring at the Kealba landill site has stopped ater equipment installed by the Environment Protection Authority was attacked by vandals. he equipment had been in place for several months following the discovery of an underground ire at the site, which was releasing a persistent choking odour residents described as “toxic”. he EPA said the destroyed and stolen equipment would be replaced in the near future. “Eforts are underway to replace the

equipment and recommence air quality testing as soon as possible. “Additional security and other measures are being considered to help minimise the prospect of future vandal attack, protect replacement equipment and underpin continuity of reporting.” It’s done little to appease frustrated residents who have been living with the odour since October 2019. One resident, Mark Pepper, described the air monitoring as a token gesture. “he air monitoring is one thing, it tells us that the air quality is good, but we still don’t
know what we’re breathing in and why it smells so toxic,” Mr Pepper said. “he odour hasn’t been as strong in recent times, but I think, as residents, we just want this all over.” Landill operator Barro Group reported the suspected ire within one of its waste cells to the EPA in October. Subsequent investigations uncovered ires in two of four cells. he cells were covered with a thick layer of clay to contain the smoke and odour. he EPA has warned that the clay may need to be uncovered to extinguish the ire, further
intensifying the odour and possibly smoke. In December, the EPA issued Barro Group with a clean-up notice, requiring ongoing air quality monitoring and publication of the results, as well as actions to keep the community informed. It also requires it to undertake a risk assessment and provide plans to the EPA that show how it will prevent further ires. he group was also issued an oicial warning for failing to notify EPA of the incident immediately. Barro is expected to table a remediation plan by the end of the month.

A Victoria University employee has been sentenced to prison following an investigation by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) into the misappropriation of more than half a million dollars of university funds. Kamaljeet Kaur Gill was sentenced to three years and six months jail on March 27 ater pleading guilty at the Melbourne County Court to misconduct in public oice and obtaining property by deception and thet. he court heard that Gill had fraudulently obtained almost 200 EFTPOS git cards to the value of $614,261.50 using Victoria University funds ater submitting falsiied invoices via a university procurement system. A further 102 Coles Myer git cards belonging to Victoria University, with a value of $36,650.00, were also stolen by Gill, who was employed in an administrative position at the time. Gill was prosecuted by the Oice of Public Prosecutions following IBAC’s Operation Franklin investigation which started in 2018. Airport expands cargo capacity With most international and domestic lights grounded because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Melbourne Airport has been focused on attracting additional freighter services to support the movement of goods in and out of Victoria. Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said there was an increase in demand for freight amid these challenging times. “More people are purchasing goods online while in self-isolation and the need to move critical goods such as medical supplies and produce is absolutely vital,” said Mr Strambi. “Now more than ever we need to attract freighters into Melbourne so we can support imports and exports for the state. We have
obviously lost a lot of space in the belly-hold of commercial passenger lights, and we’re focused on bridging that gap to ensure the movement of goods continues at the right pace.” Mr Strambi said eforts were yielding quick results. “In the past couple of weeks we’ve added 31 more freight lights a week and welcomed 15 new cargo carriers, which is just extraordinary growth in such a small amount of time,” he said. Upgrades for the St Albans and Deer Park libraries are a step closer. Preliminary studies have found the existing sites are still considered as the preferred locations for both libraries. he redeveloped St Albans library will be part of a community hub with additional community functions. A drat study, which was endorsed by Brimbank council at a recent meeting, proposes that the hub include a youth space and lexible community space. he Deer Park library will also be part of a community hub, which is more likely to include a neighbourhood house space, maker space and lexible community space. he drat study recommended that both libraries include collections, computers, lounge, study spaces, tech/ gaming, children’s area, activities area, toy library, service kiosks and service desk and an outdoor space. Fund fast-tracks support By Tate Papworth Western Health has launched an emergency relief fund to fast track support for staf and patients across the health service in the ight against COVID-19. he dedicated fund will direct donations towards the purchase of new equipment to cover increased demand during the crisis. It will also fund new healthcare initiatives such as telehealth and other digital platforms, and a wellbeing program for staf working on the front line. Western Health Foundation director Julia White said unprecedented times called for unprecedented measures. “Although the health service has budgets in place, our resources will be tested and stretched to the limit,” she said.

“he Emergency Response Fund will empower us to purchase those items we may not even know we need yet, and to do so quickly when we need to.” Western Health has put a number of measures in place to make sure it gets through the expected tough months ahead. A dedicated respiratory assessment clinic has been established at Sunshine Hospital, new wards have been prepared with additional acute and intensive care capacity to manage the expected increase in demand, and recruitment is underway for additional staf.

he University of Melbourne is searching for people to take part in a study on the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on households. he study, which is being conducted by Dr Antonia Settle, a McKenzie Postdoctural Fellow at the Melbourne Institute of Economic and Social Research, will examine the income, saving and spending decisions of participants during the pandemic to better understand the inancial vulnerabilities, inancial stress and coping mechanisms of households. Dr Settle said the pandemic had laid bare the vulnerabilities that have been building up on the balance sheets of Australian households. “At issue is high levels of debt, stagnating wages and job insecurity. But on top of this, costs have been steadily rising over the last two decades in categories like health, education, and housing, as well as power and insurance,” she said. “With the COVID-19 pandemic, a huge number of Australian households are taking a hit on their incomes and, as a result, are running into signiicant troubles.” Participants are asked to take part in a fortnightly phone interview about their household income and expenditure for eight to 10 months. Interviews are conidential and participants can withdraw from the study at any time. Participants will be reimbursed for their time with a $30 gitcard at the end of each interview. Remember life under the ig tree More than 50 years ago in a village in Greece that was marred by war and poverty, Giannoula and Fotios Panagiotopoulos dreamed of a diferent way of life for their children. Australia, it was rumoured, was a land of opportunity where hard work brought reward. Leaving behind family and friends and armed with only a handful of key English words, they set of to make a new home on the other side of the world. Now more than ive decades on, their daughter and Sunshine local Olympia Panagiotopoulos is sharing their stories in a powerful book, Beneath the Fig Leaves. Filled with stories handed down from
Olympia’s mother, the memoir pays tribute to the courage shown by the hundreds of thousands of Australians who crossed oceans to pursue a better life here. Under the shade of a ig tree in a lush garden in Sunshine, Olympia collected the stories that her mother regaled her with. Tales from their homeland, the long journey south, and how Giannoula, Fotios and their young children made Australian life their own are all featured in the book, which includes a full-colour picture section and family recipes. Giannoula celebrated her 100th birthday in 2019 and Olympia said she’d been a true trailblazer.
“My parents were responsible for helping many other migrants settle in Melbourne … helping them to create and establish a new life,” Olympia said. “In 2009 [her 90th birthday], mum was featured in [Greek community newspaper] Neos Kosmos. As a result of that article, we were contacted by some of the passengers of the ship, Tasmania, who had travelled with my family in 1955. “I held a reunion at my home for some of the passengers who spent the aternoon recalling memories and sharing their experience.”
Failing to comply with a Clean Up Notice from Environment Protection Authority Victoria has cost a Burnside man a conviction in the Sunshine Magistrates Court. Anthony James Grima pleaded guilty to one charge of contravening the requirements of a clean up notice relating to extensive stockpiling of construction and demolition waste at a premises in Auburn Avenue, Sunshine North. Mr Grima was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond, and ordered to pay $1000 to the court fund. EPA Western metropolitan regional manager, Stephen Lansdell said the investigation wouldn’t have come to anything if it wasn’t for a report from a member of the community. “hanks to our vigilant Sunshine community, EPA oicers observed construction and demolition waste piled up to approximately eight metres high, covering most of the Sunshine North site,” Mr Lansdell said. “We issued the company with a clean up notice, requiring the stockpile to be removed to a properly licensed facility. Disappointingly, our follow-up inspections showed the deadline was not met. “his case has two clear messages: EPA is prepared to enforce its remedial notices with legal action, and the court is prepared to convict irst-time environmental ofenders.”
