Top Shelf’s new top drop A Campbellield distillery has started brewing hand sanitiser to help keep its factory open. Top Shelf International’s NED Whisky came up with the idea late last month as it looked for ways to soften the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its business. Top Shelf International executive chairman Adem Karaili said the switch to hand sanitiser had not only been good for the business but had also improved the mental wellbeing of staff. “It has kept a lot of people employed who otherwise would have been stood down. We wanted to ensure we kept our doors open and utilise the assets we have,” he said. The distillery is producing hand sanitiser that is 65 per cent ethanol and is available in 100ml and 750ml bottles Mr Karailli said the distillery was aiming to have produced 100,000 bottles of hand sanitiser by the end of the week. He said bottles of hand sanitiser have already been dropped off to irst responders, GPs, refugee agencies and health workers who were in short supply. Council staff stood down By Laura Michell Hundreds of Hume council employees have been stood down as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact council services. Council chief executive Domenic Isola conirmed to Star Weekly last week that 300 casual staf have been temporarily stood down. Mr Isola said it was a “diicult decision”, which was the result of state and federal government restrictions requiring council to close a number of services and facilities. “he coronavirus is having a devastating

impact on our community, and Hume City Council as an organisation is not immune,” he said. “We have had to close our leisure centres, libraries, community facilities and learning centres … and we anticipate that more facilities may need to close as we all do our bit to ight against the spread [of COVID-19]. “We are providing daily updates to our staf as the situation evolves.” Mr Isola said afected staf would be provided with a special payment of two weeks’ pay and would be able to access their long service leave

entitlements during the stand down period. It comes as the number of COVID-19 cases in Whittlesea and Hume continues to rise. Data from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) reveals there were 29 recorded cases in Hume as of April 2, up from 10 the week before. here were 15 cases in Whittlesea, up from eight the previous week. More than 1000 cases were recorded across the state as of April 2. Locally, two cases of COVID-19 have been conirmed at La Trobe University, while a contractor who worked at Doreen’s Hazel Glen

College has also tested positive for the virus. Hazel Glen College principal Anthony Stockwell recently wrote to parents to assure them that there was no risk to students. he letter, seen by Star Weekly, said the school was following all health advice from DHHS. “DHHS has advised that there is no need for staf or students to take any further precautionary action other than what has already been communicated to community members, such as practising social distancing and good hand hygiene,” the letter stated.

Businesses ight for survival By Laura Michell Businesses across Whittlesea and Hume are looking for ways to adapt their services and keep people employed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many restaurants and cafes have already switched to takeaway and delivery services, with butchers, greengrocers and bakers across both municipalities also starting home delivery. Other businesses have added new services. Mickleham’s Marnong Estate has cancelled its weddings and functions and closed its

restaurant, bar and accommodation as a result of federal and state government restrictions. To help keep staf employed, a farm shop and takeaway cafe has opened on the estate. Executive chef Adam Upton-Browning said the estate had adapted rapidly to stay open and continue supporting customers and farmers. “With these uncertain times, it’s about what we can ofer to be able to assist our community,” he said. Vicinity Centres, which manages Broadmeadows Central and Roxburgh Village shopping centres has reduced the opening

hours of its centres to lower costs for retailers. Both centres will be open 10am-5pm daily, however supermarkets, pharmacies, medical centres and speciality retailers may open outside of these hours. Paciic Epping centre manager Simon Brown said he was committed to working with retailers to “navigate this uncharted situation together”. A spokesperson for Lendlease, which operates Craigieburn Centre, said centre management would continue discussions with retailers about how businesses could be supported during the pandemic.

Community spirit shines through Community-minded Whittlesea and Hume residents are doing what they can to help others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Grocery swap pages, shopping groups and meal services have popped up in the community as people look to lend a hand to their neighbours. Kalkallo’s Marina Trninic is hoping her Angel Shoppers Facebook group will help make life a bit easier for anyone who doesn’t have family or friends to call on for support. he Angel Shoppers will pick up groceries and medicine for people in need in their local area and deliver to their doorsteps, for free. “here’s nothing like communities banding

together and helping the vulnerable people of their community. It is good for mental health and a sense of belonging,” she said. Epping’s Tracey Jardim is also helping to create some positivity in the community with her grocery swap group on Facebook. he group allows northern suburbs residents to ofer up items they have too many of in exchange for things they need. Ms Jardim said the most frequently swapped items were nappies and toilet paper. In Craigieburn, the Sikh community is running a free mobile food service for people in isolation. he service delivers to Craigieburn,

Roxburgh Park, Broadmeadows, Donnybrook, Kalkallo, Epping, Lalor, homastown and Wollert. Gurdwara Sahib Craigieburn secretary Gurdeep Singh said volunteers have been cooking, packing and distributing the meals since March 14. He said the temple was receiving about 150 calls for meals each day. Epping Private Hospital has closed its doors as a result of COVID-19. he Cooper Street hospital announced on social media last week that it permanently closed its doors on March 27. “he fast-changing environment of COVID-19 brings risk and a level of uncertainty within Australia’s healthcare sector,” a statement said. “Further, the federal government’s decision to cancel all private and public non-elective surgeries from April 1, 2020, has signiicantly impacted the immediate and ongoing sustainability of Epping Private Hospital. “We therefore regretfully inform our patients and the local community that Epping Private Hospital has permanently closed.” Epping Private Hospital opened in October 2018 and celebrated its 1000th patient in December last year. he hospital sought permission from Whittlesea council last year to fast-track its stage two building works. At the time, chief executive Malak Sukkar said stage two included an extra 120 acute beds, two operating theatres, obstetrics and cardiac services, a six-bed day oncology and infusion centre. He said the hospital had gone from “strength to strength” since opening. All requests to access Epping Private Hospital medical records are required in writing. Council offers coronavirus relief By Laura Michell Sports clubs, community groups and ratepayers have been given a helping hand, with Hume council waiving fees and interest charges and refunding deposits in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. he council has voted to introduce a number of measures designed to ease the impact of coronavirus on the community. he council voted to waive the ground use fees for sporting clubs until June 30, while community groups will have booking fees and

deposits for council facilities refunded. he council also decided not to charge residential, business and commercial property owners interest on late rates payments. he next rates instalment is due on May 31. Cr Geof Porter said councillors had been approached by diferent groups in the community expressing their concerns about the impact of COVID-19. “I think it is a great thing council is taking this initiative to say … we are with you,” he said. “[We are] letting our community know we

do value them and we are with them all the way during this terrible time.” he council also approved a small business grants program, which will be included in the 2020-21 budget. While the program was not developed in response to COVID-19, Cr Naim Kurt said the grants would make a big diference to small businesses that have been impacted by the pandemic. “We are living in unprecedented times today with what we are facing as a community, with the pandemic situation and the concerns about

our economy as well, and people are looking to government for answers, for information and for support,” he said. Two grant categories will be created covering business expansion and outdoor dining. he grants will be available to businesses that employ less than 20 people. Up to $200,000 will be available in the business expansion category, with individual businesses able to apply for up to $20,000. he council will make $50,000 available in the outdoor dining category, with businesses able to apply for up to $10,000.

Pets get kerbside care A Craigieburn vet clinic is making it easier for pet owners to take their furry friends for a check-up during the COVID-19 pandemic by setting up a kerbside pet drop-of service. Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) recently had to close its animal shelter and place its animals into foster care, but with vets classed as an essential service, SCAR has kept its Community Animal Hospital open. SCAR founder Marisa Debattista said the kerbside drop-of service was a way to keep pets healthy and happy while abiding by social distancing regulations. People are asked to let SCAR know that they wish to drop-of their pet. SCAR staf will then ask pet owners a series of questions to ensure they are not exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms and that they haven’t travelled overseas recently, before owners are asked to hand over their cat or dog through the window of their car.

A vet consult is then carried out over the phone while the owner remains in their car. “So many people in our community are pet owners and during these uncertain times, they are worried about their pet’s wellbeing too,” Ms Debattista said. “We’ll be open to ensure their animals are looked ater in a safe environment whether they need a check-up, microchipping, vaccinations, de-sexing or emergency care. “If we can make sure pets remain happy, healthy and at home, we’re doing our jobs.” SCAR is also keeping its outreach program open, ofering low-cost vet care and free pet food from its foodbank for those in the community who are doing it tough. Joy at end of the rainbow Families across Doreen and Mernda are going on bear hunts and following rainbow trails as the community looks for ways to spread cheer amid new social distancing regulations. Members of a new community Facebook group, called Doreen Community Spirit, are encouraging locals to add colour to the streets by creating rainbows, and to take part in the bear hunt by putting teddy bears in their front windows for children to ind. Doreen Community Spirit founders Lauryn Bahen and Yvonne Vuillermin said the rainbow trail was an inclusive community art project. “Rainbows are bright, positive and for many, are a sign of hope. We wanted to brighten up our community and remind others that

ater the greatest of storms there is always a rainbow,” they said. “Many in our community are struggling due to the current coronavirus crisis and those vulnerable are facing even harder times ahead. We want to remind people that they are not alone and that we are all in this together.” Doreen’s Cassie Burrows, who started the bear hunt locally, said the simple act of putting bears in windows and creating rainbows had brought the community together. Changing the way we deliver council services The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is afecing the day-to-day lives of our community, our social support agencies and the way we deliver services. The City of Whitlesea is adaping quickly to ensure the services you expect and deserve coninue. All the changes we are making aim to stop the spread of coronavirus in our community and beyond.
