Care package for veterans The Caroline Springs RSL is partnering with Woolworths to ensure its most vulnerable members are looked after. The sub-branch has identiied more than 30 veterans and their dependents who are elderly, vulnerable and may be in need of support. Caroline Springs RSL secretary David Saunders said with a large number of members in need, the RSL reached out to the local Woolworths store for support. “A high percentage of our elderly veterans are residents at local retirement villages and are not able to shop for essential food items,” he said. “Our welfare team has contacted the Caroline Springs Woolworths manager who has put together 30 grocery bags with items such as bread, long-life milk, tea bags, toilet paper, sanitiser, minced meat, canned vegetables and fresh fruit.” Mr Saunders said the COVID-19 pandemic had hit the RSL hard. “The RSL relies heavily on our ANZAC and Remembrance Appeal badge-selling, where funds from these appeals go towards assisting those veterans and dependents in inancial hardship and requiring support with home maintenance and other services. “If you would like to purchase an ANZAC badge, they will be available at Woolworths Caroline Springs.” The Caroline Springs RSL is closed but will continue to support veterans and families over the phone. COVID-19 cases rising By Ewen McRae More than a dozen cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Melton, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. here has now been at least 14 cases of the virus conirmed in the Melton municipality, while a single case has also been recorded in Moorabool at the time Star Weekly went to print. Elsewhere in the western suburbs, 20 cases have been reported in the municipality of
Wyndham, 21 cases in Moonee Valley, 15 cases in Brimbank, nine cases in Hobsons Bay and six cases in Maribyrnong. More than 821 cases have been recorded across the state, while more than 39,000 Victorians have been tested to date. he igures come as Victoria recorded its irst deaths from the virus last week. A total of four Victorians have so far died. Stage 3 restrictions came into efect at midnight on Monday. Except for household members, gatherings are now restricted to two
people. Victoria’s chief health oicer professor Brett Sutton said these are unprecedented times. “We’re doing everything we can to save lives and slow the spread of this deadly virus, but we all have a role to play to protect those who are most vulnerable,” professor Sutton said. “I can’t be clearer; if you can stay at home, you must stay at home.” he health department also announced it is working with Victoria Police to ensure residents who have recently returned from overseas are observing a 14 day quarantine.
Police have strong powers to enforce the direction if it’s required, including ines of up to $20,000 fro individuals and $100,000 for companies. “Everyone who’s unwell must isolate themselves and everyone who’s been told they’re in quarantine either as a returned traveller or close contact must do so,” professor Sutton said. “Social distancing will save lives. Everyone needs to comply with restrictions in place to keep yourself, your loved ones and the whole community safe.”

Live streaming on the agenda By Ewen McRae Melton council is considering introducing live streaming of its monthly meetings. Last week’s council meeting – which was postponed ater council was unable to achieve a quorum with a number of councillors unable to attend – was set to consider a proposal to engage an outside company to ilm and stream the meetings. he recommendation from council oicers was to temporarily hold all meetings in Melton until June to make ilming easier. he proposal comes amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with social distancing

measures making it harder for residents to attend meetings. he council had already limited the number of people allowed in the public gallery to just six. he proposal comes amid calls from the Municipal Association of Victoria for the state government to make urgent changes to council meeting requirements to enable meetings to
take place online. he Local Government Act requires councillors to physically attend a council meeting in order to participate in council decision-making. MAV president Coral Ross said that in-person meetings are neither practical nor safe and the availability of online alternatives makes the path forward obvious. “Inlexible council meeting requirements under state legislation is a signiicant concern for local governments across the country as many council chambers do not allow for appropriate social distancing,“ Cr Ross said. “his is an unprecedented situation which
requires collaboration and innovative thinking. “We have been proactively working alongside the Victorian Government to provide solutions which will ensure the health and safety of councillors, council staf and the community. “With streaming and virtual meetings now widely available, we call on the Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek and the state government to make this common sense decision and enable one of these options to be implemented as an alternative to meeting face-to-face.” Melton council will consider the streaming proposal at a rescheduled meeting.

Food for thought as cafe adapts A local Rockbank cafe is adapting to the new business world, but still taking time to look out for their dedicated customers. We Love Aintree cafe in Woodlea has introduced a new takeaway menu, including ready to go meals, to help residents living through new social distancing measures. Managing director Jono Ingram said it was important to adjust as best they could. “It’s not business as usual that’s for sure, but it’s been really encouraging to still see locals coming out to support us,” Mr Ingram said. “We’ve had to re-do our menu to work with a
reduced staf, but we have a had a good response to that and the meals that people order to pick up or have delivered have been really popular. “We’re also selling sour dough bread and milk, and we’re working with our suppliers to get some more grocery items in so people have an extra place to go for those things that might be in short supply elsewhere.” he cafe is also making extra efort to reach out to their customers on social media to check on their mental well being at this diicult time. Mr Ingram said something as simple as a call or a post on social media could go a long way to
improving a customer’s outlook. “We’re all about creating places where people can connect and belong,” he said. “Social isolation can have damaging impacts on mental health and social health, so now that we can’t have physical contact and connection we’ve recognised the need to be more proactive in reaching out if someone needs some help. “So it might just be a post on Facebook to brighten someone’s day, or a call or a text, but we feel that’s really important to help get through what we’re all going through.” Ewen McRae
Melton RSL has cancelled its traditional Anzac Day service and march, but is calling on residents to not ignore the day. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the banning of large gatherings, Melton RSL has been forced to abandon its usual commemorations. Melton RSL president Ian Lawrey said the decision was disappointing. “It’s obviously disappointing, but we’ve got to be responsible and we have no control over how many people would congregate on the day,” Mr Lawrey said. “We’d still ask people to take some time on the day to recognise the signiicance of the occasion, whether that’s watching the service from the Shrine on TV, which will obviously be scaled down as well, or just taking a moment to think about the sacriice of those that have gone before us. “As the Prime Minister said recently it’s probably the most important day of the year, not only for veterans but to those that enjoy the life they’ve got today because of the veterans. “Do whatever you feel is appropriate without congregating in groups.” Mr Lawrey said the RSL was still providing support services to members throughout the pandemic, with face-to-face meetups replaced by phone calls, and other similar alterations. he traditional dawn service at the Shrine of Remembrance will be live streamed on social media, as well as broadcast on radio and television. Police arrested eight youths after a stolen car crashed in Mount Cottrell last week. An off-duty Protective Services Oficer observed a black Mazda speeding and driving dangerously in Truganina around 9.20am on March 24. Local police responded and located the speeding car in Tarneit and quickly established it was stolen. A short pursuit ensued before the driver of the stolen car lost control and crashed into a barrier on Boundary Road, Mount Cottrell about 9.50am. Eight youths led the car on foot but were arrested by police a short time later. Health service talks extended By Ewen McRae A decision on a potential amalgamation of local health services has been deferred. Since December, Djerrwarrh Health Services and Western Health have been in discussions about a potential amalgamation, following a state government announcement that Western Health would operate the future Melton Hospital. he health services have been consulting with community groups and local doctors, with a decision expected in May.
However, due to strong feedback from community groups and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the consultation period has been extended. A joint statement from the two health services last week outlined the changes to the process. “We have made the decision to extend the community consultation into the second half of 2020,” the statement said. “he decision was made in response to the feedback we received and also recognises the vital need to address the ongoing COVID-19
pandemic. “his will ensure we have the time to discuss and address any concerns raised in the consultation process. “Our main priority remains the delivery of the highest quality care, while we continue to engage our communities in the months ahead. “We will meet community representatives when possible, and ensure responses and issues raised are fed back into the group overseeing the project, as they have been so far.” Under the Health Services Act, any amalgamation would be voluntary, require
agreement from both boards and need to demonstrate beneit to the community. Djerriwarrh Health currently does not have a board, with Dr John Ballard the administrator. he health services said the decision on amalgamation would not be delayed to allow a board to be installed. “his process is based on an evaluation of the net beneit to the community, irrespective of the composition of the governing bodies,” they said. Further community consultation sessions will be announced in the coming weeks.
Food relief as virus hits A new state government program to help those in self isolation receive essential goods has been rolled out amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Essential goods will be delivered to households who have little or no food, and no network of family and friends to support them. Each eligible household will receive a two-week supply of essential goods. Food packages will include items such as long-life milk, pasta, cereal, canned vegetables and sugar. Personal care packages will also be distributed to eligible households and include soap, toothpaste and deodorant. Additional items may also be provided depending on the needs of the household, such as nappies or baby formula. Disability, Ageing and Carers Minister Luke Donnellan said it was important that all Victorians were getting the support they need through the pandemic, and not placing others

at risk. We need to look out for each other over the next few months – but for people who have no one nearby to support them, we’ll make sure they get what they need,” Mr Donnellan said. “here is plenty of food for all Victorians so please don’t take more than you need. But if you do ind yourself isolated, and can’t access the basics, we have emergency relief packages for you.” he packages will be delivered door-to-door, with other distribution points to be established as required. he emergency relief program for those in mandatory self-isolation will be co-ordinated by the Red Cross in partnership with Foodbank Victoria and under the direction of the state relief co-ordinator. he service can be accessed by calling Victoria’s dedicated coronavirus hotline on 1800 675 398. Fighting for Sammy
Appeal still on as virus hits collections
By Ewen McRae Sammy Colakidis had always been a bubbly and happy child, so when parents Kristy and Steven noticed a change they knew something was not right. It was June 2019, when Sammy’s parents irst noticed an unusual yellow colour around her brow area, which prompted them to take her to the Royal Children’s Hospital. A series of tests revealed that Sammy had stage 4, high-risk neuroblastoma. “It was the most devastating moment of our life when we were told that our three-year-old had incurable cancer. It is the news that breaks you and shatters your world in an instant,” Kristy Colakidis said. “here was no time to waste before we had to make the decision to take extensive and invasive action to ight against her cancer.” A primary tumour behind Sammy’s stomach had spread to her liver and throughout her bones and bone marrow, requiring immediate treatment. he dire news continued for the family – Sammy has a gene ampliication that means her body is less likely to respond to treatment. Sammy began an arduous 12-month journey of chemotherapy, surgery, tandem stem cell transplant, radiation and immunotherapy. With three other children to look ater, Kristy and Steven have let no stone unturned in their attempts to help their family. hey say, throughout it all, Sammy has been a pillar of strength. “Samantha, or Sammy Lammy as she prefers to be called, has proved herself to be a powerhouse of strength … She attends her appointments in her ruby red shoes, pretty dresses and headbands, ready to, as we say in our house, kick cancer’s butt.”

Now waiting on the completion of her radiation therapy, the Colakidis family is anticipating acceptance into a trial in the US which could keep Sammy in remission longer. In support of Sammy and her family, who have lived in the Woodlea community since 2017, Woodlea has started #stayinghomeforsammy, a social media challenge where people are encouraged to share a photo or video
of themselves in isolation to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Organisers hope it’s a way to raise awareness of the devastating efects community transmission could have on vulnerable members of the community, such as Sammy and her family. Seeking nominations for Melton Transport Community Reference Group
he Good Friday Appeal will still receive a sizeable donation from the Bacchus Marsh community, despite roadside collections being cancelled. he Bacchus Marsh Lions Club runs the appeal in the town every year, with more than $30,000 donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital in 2019, but with restrictions forced by the coronavirus pandemic limiting the ability of volunteers to collect it will be signiicantly lower this year. Appeal chairman David Atterbury said they had already raised $10,000 throughout the past year, but without roadside collections the donations would take a hit. “he welfare of the donors and the collectors, was of paramount importance in cancelling the traditional Good Friday roadside collection,” Mr Atterbury said. “We do collect a signiicant amount of money throughout the year, but about 70 per cent of our donations each year come in that week up to Good Friday. “We have all our cans out at the moment at stores around town, so we’d still ask people to donate … if they can.” Mr Atterbury also advised that there is an opportunity for the public to go on line to www.goodfridayappeal.com.au and donate directly. Virus raises family violence risk By Ewen McRae Melton has joined other members of the Interface Councils network in calling for more domestic violence support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Measures to curb the global pandemic are tightening and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said stage three is imminent. Interface Councils spokesperson Karen Egan expressed concern there was a risk that more women could die from domestic violence, as they are forced to spend more time indoors in
unstable households. Cr Egan called for more family violence services, such as Orange Door Hubs, to open in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. “Melbourne’s outer suburbs already have higher rates of family violence when compared to the Melbourne metropolitan average,” Cr Egan said. “here is an urgent need for the Victorian government to open more Orange Door Hubs because currently there are no hubs in the Interface Councils Region. “he Orange Door Hubs and associated outreach services are a recommendation from
the Royal Commission into Family Violence and we think they will save lives and help women and children access the assistance and services they need, before they end up homeless or in other devastating circumstances.” Latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency showed a 16 per cent increase in family violence in the Melton region in 2019, with more than 2500 incidents. Cr Egan said the need for more services was already growing before the pandemic set in, and was now even more essential. “here is a gap of family violence service
provision of almost 50 per cent in the Interface Councils Region compared with metropolitan Melbourne,” she said. “Before COVID-19, there were more than 50 per cent fewer psychologists, two per cent less mental health support and about 13 per cent less alcohol and drug support. “Without more support there won’t be enough help for people impacted by the current public health crisis … We also know inancial stress arising from changes in employment or income has been recognised as a precursor to family violence.”
Staying connected While self isolation and social distancing have become common terms in recent weeks, one Melton woman is doing all she can to stay connected to her neighbours. Suzanne Brown is a resident at Ingenia Gardens independent living facility, and she is tackling loneliness in the community by encouraging residents to get to know each other. Whether it’s a phone call, or a chat over the fence, Ms Brown said it was important for people to stay connected during tough times. “One of my neighbours doesn’t tend to get out much, but I have been able to strike up a friendship anyway – having those little conversations over the fence and at the front door help to form neighbourly bonds,” Ms Brown said. “Living in a community where you know your neighbours have your back and care about your wellbeing is vital – especially as you get older. “Our Ingenia community is not just
looking out for each other but also the wider community.” Ms Brown’s message comes on the back of Neighbour Day, an initiative of Relationships Australia designed to tackle the pitfalls of social isolation, depression and loneliness, which was held on March 29. Ingenia Gardens Melton’s Nada Mecanovic said they usually run a popular program called Activate to promote community connection, but that had been placed on hold as the pandemic measures tightened. “Residents look forward to taking part in the activities and events throughout the year,” Ms Mecanovic said. “If we can help make a diference to the lives of some of our most vulnerable residents by facilitating active living and social wellbeing programs in our communities, then it is the least we can do.” Ewen McRae

Seafood shake-up ‘dire’ By Esther Lauaki he seafood industry is in danger of “disappearing” unless the state government intervenes, Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur says. In Parliament last week, Ms McArthur said ishers and their employees face zero cash-low and inancial ruin as a result of COVID-19. “Wild catch, farmed ishing, and processing are now in near total shutdown,” she said. However, the RSPCA is asking people to put on their walking shoes and take their four-legged friends on a walk in their local area during May, while still following the rules of social distancing. he RSPCA said the new event format will encourage people to spend time with their dogs while still providing a pathway for participants to contribute to animal welfare and support RSPCA’s work to help end animal cruelty.
