Given that the health and safety of all in our community is our highest priority, as a precautionary measure, we have taken the decision to close the school on Friday 13 March and Monday 16 March 2020.” In a post on the Werribee Secondary College Facebook page, principal Amanda Mullins wrote on Monday that all of the school’s excursions and school events have been

Wyndham council is set to launch a ‘Buy local’ campaign to help save jobs and minimise the unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on businesses. he campaign comes as dozens of events have been cancelled or postponed and panic buying has let supermarket shelves empty. On Monday, the state government announced a state of emergency to try to slow the spread of infection. Wyndham schools have closed, including Westbourne Grammar, as have Aquapulse, Eagle Stadium and Werribee Outdoor Pool. Wyndham City’s manager of the climate futures oice – which oversees economic growth – Peter McKinnon, said a signiicant part of the council’s role through the pandemic was to build community resilience. “We need to band together to protect our local economy through this,” Mr McKinnon said. “While the federal government has committed to a range of stimulus initiatives – including cash bonuses for low income earners, wage and salary packages for small and medium-sized businesses, and assistance in funding the wages of apprenticeships – there is still more that we can do on the ground as a community. “We already know the global pandemic will have negative economic impacts and its important as a city we band together to do all that we can to minimise the impacts to the best of our ability. “Wyndham city will work with key business industry groups such as the Committee for Wyndham and other industry representative groups to launch a ‘Buy Local’ campaign. “his campaign will have both a consumer to business and business to business focus, and we’ll explore and develop digital ways to enhance this ofering. “Further to this, we will enhance the industry engagement program to inform local businesses about recent federal and state government funding packages and for us to better understand the short and long term impacts felt on local businesses.” Concerns about COVID-19 have prompted Wyndham council to cancel or postpone all of the events and activities it had planned up until the end of April. he council made the announcement on Friday, issuing a statement which said: “While it is a very diicult decision to make, the health and safety of our community and staf must take precedence.

Wyndham misses out on cops By Esther Lauaki Western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn says the state government has “absolutely missed the mark” ater Wyndham Police were allocated just one extra oicer in a recent deployment. Police minister Lisa Neville last week announced 580 police will be added to the frontline in total, with more than 350 of them headed towards regional centres. he Westgate division, which services Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, was allocated seven oicers with just one of
them to serve in Wyndham. “I have to say today’s announcement is somewhat bewildering,” Mr Finn told Star Weekly. “I think [the government] has absolutely missed the mark. “We need a lot of police in an area as big as Wyndham. “Given the street crime that occurs in Wyndham … I think that this is something that needs to be addressed. “here are people on the wrong side of the law who will take full advantage of this need for
more police.” he number of crimes recorded in Wyndham during the 12-month period to September 2019 rose by more than 14 per cent driven by increases in aggravated robberies and aggravated burglaries. Latest igures from the Crime Statistics Agency showed that between September 2018 and September last year, 16,201 ofences were reported to Wyndham police. Last week’s allocation was a marked decrease from a year ago when 12 frontline police for Wyndham were added to the beat joined by additional specialist family violence and
criminal investigation oicers. In 2018, 41 new police were allocated to the Westgate Division, including 27 frontline police for Wyndham. Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent said more police would be on the beat across the state than ever before. “Our unwavering focus remains on tackling high harm ofending which can oten have traumatic and life-changing consequences for victims,” Deputy commissioner Nugent said. “he extra resources will also give police more time to focus on reducing crime.”
Heartbreak over cemetery grounds

A Werribee South woman says she is fed up with the “heartbreaking” state of the Werribee Cemetery. Michele Preston regularly visits the resting place of several of her family members. “I have to go there to see my mum, nanna, pop, nonno, nonna and mother and father-in-law,” Ms Preston said. “It’s heartbreaking that I have lost them … but to go there and see what surrounds them is disgusting. “he grounds have looked like this for a couple of years now but I am so annoyed that they continue to leave the grounds looking like this. “Something needs to be done.” Werribee Cemetery is managed by the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust. Interim operations director Brendan O’Connor said extreme weather was to blame. “Extremely dry conditions of the early summer period through to mid-January followed by heavy, persistent rain have had an impact on the grounds at Werribee Cemetery,” Mr O’Connor said. “he unusual weather conditions caused some grassed areas to ‘burn of’ in early summer and the heavy rains since then have caused the rapid growth of grass and weeds.” He said lawns are mowed weekly and the trust has reviewed its weed eradication program. “GMCT respects that Michele is a regular visitor to Werribee Cemetery and we hope the outcome of the additional maintenance works that have been made result in a positive experience for her,” Mr O’Connor said.
Wyndham’s creative community banded together at the weekend to make banners and placards to hang on a blockade at the entry of the Hobbs Road railway stabling yard. It was the second demonstration by a Wyndham Vale group, which is protesting the state government’s proposal to dump toxic soil from the Westgate Tunnel project at the yard, following a rally attended by hundreds of residents earlier this month. Community organiser Lisa Heinrchs said the message to the government remains the same. “he soil is not welcome in Wyndham,” Ms Heinrichs said. “We had a lot of residents come out and bring artwork, banners and collages to let the government know how they felt. “We also had a big white banner and invited residents to come down and put their hand prints on it. She said that another large rally which was planned for the steps of Parliament will not go ahead in the wake of the current Covid-19 public health crisis. “While we won’t be conducting the rally, we are still monitoring activity at the Hobbs Road site and are ready to act if we need to,”Ms Heinrichs said. A petition against the dumping of toxic soil in Wyndham was signed by more than 6000 people and was delivered to Werribee MP Tim Pallas this week to be tabled in Parliament on hursday.

The Water Police and police airwing rescued two men from a submerged boat in Portarlington on Friday, March 6. Investigators have been told a ibreglass ishing boat began taking on water about one kilometre off the foreshore about 1.35am. A police watercraft rescued the two male occupants of the boat, a 45 year-old Werribee South man and a 27 year-old Melton South man, who were transported to hospital for observation.

Police have warned Wyndham drivers to lock their vehicles, as thefts from unlocked cars continue in the municipality. Sergeant Steve Meehan said that the thefts were mostly occurring at night, with the offenders targeting wallets, cash, phones, computers and sunglasses left inside vehicles. Police also said anyone who witnessed suspicious behaviour should contact triple-0.

Ranfurlie Asset Management, the retail and commercial division of the Dennis Family, is overseeing the Tarneit Park Hub development which will spread across 46,000 square metres when complete. Pop-up library for Williams Landing A pop-up library will be held two days per week at the Williams Landing Shopping Centre, from this week onwards. Wyndham council said the pop-up library would give residents a space to borrow books, attend children’s programs and socialise. he pop-up library will be open Mondays from 9am to 3pm and hursdays from 3pm to 6pm, upstairs at the shopping centre. Mayor Josh Gilligan said the pop-up library was in response to resident requests for a local library. “We are looking at building a library in Williams Landing in the coming years, but this is a great interim solution to allow residents to access books and programs without travelling too far,” Cr Gilligan said. “he new pop-up library will ofer local access to literacy and numeracy programs, social programs for parents and babies and a kids club. “his pop-up library demonstrates our continued commitment to maintaining our status as an excellent Learning City.” On Mondays, Rhyme Time will be held at the pop-up library at 9.30am and Baby Time, a session for parents and babies, will be held at 11am and 1.30pm. Coronavirus shuts down events By Alesha Capone A slew of events planned to run across Wyndham during the next two months have been postponed or cancelled, as part of eforts to halt the spread of coronavirus. he Wyndham Rotary Fun Run or Walk, which was to be held on Sunday to raise funds for the Werribee Mercy Hospital, was postponed to an unknown later date. he Wyndham Relay For Life – which raises funds for the Cancer Council Victoria – was also to be held at the weekend but was cancelled on Friday aternoon. he Cancer Council Victoria’s community engagement manager Cara Davey said funds raised by relay participants would roll over to next year’s event, as would registration fees. he Wyndham Community Activists Group posted on Facebook that it would postpone a rally planned for state Parliament on hursday, March 19. he rally, be held in partnership with residents from Bacchus Marsh, was to be in protest of toxic soil from the Westgate Tunnel project being dumped in the west. Organisers of he Point Cook Pop Up Park, in Murnong Street, have also cancelled all planned activities due to COVID-19. However, Werribee Open Range Zoo will be open as normal. Zoos Victoria took to social media at the weekend, posting: “As outdoor venues with lots of space, the risk of coronavirus remains low, and we know a lot of people are craving an escape with nature at the moment. “However, if you have any lu-like symptoms, please put your health and that of the community irst and rest up at home.” he zoo will post updates at: http://bit. ly/2xtKtCX.

Crisis teams on standby By Alesha Capone Wyndham council’s Crisis Management and Incident Response teams have been placed on 24-hour standby as the COVID-19 pandemic escalates. Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby said: “We take seriously our role as a city leader, and will be working hard to ensure that everyone in the community is being considered in all decisions we make. “We’re redeploying staf into diferent roles, and having members of our Crisis Management and Incident Response teams available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure that we remain on top of any changes to the situation as it unfolds, and to ensure that we can respond in the best possible way. “It is important that our community remains calm through this. As a council, we’re here to support you in any way that we can. We’re all in this together.” As panic buying escalated at supermarkets across Melbourne, one woman (who asked to remain anonymous) said that her mother was assaulted while shopping at an ALDI store in Wyndham Vale, about lunchtime on Saturday. he woman said her mother was carrying some toilet paper along an aisle of the supermarket, when another woman punched her in the chest and took the packet. he woman said her mother “was in shock and didn’t ight back, then broke down and walked out and sat in her car, not knowing what to do”. “Mum is immunosuppressed, and fragile – if the punch had been on the opposite side she would have broken bones,” the woman said. “Only one gentleman asked if she needed assistance, everyone else just looked away – the staf had no idea what was happening.”

authorities recommending otherwise.” Cr Gilligan said that the council was exploring new and innovative ways,inlcuding online services, to ensure local arts and culture, as well as family-friendly events, would not take a hit. Aircraft station still ranked low By Goya Dmytryshchak Aircrat station at Laverton has been ranked the second worst in Victoria in the RACV’s latest On Track survey, with crowding, diiculty inding a carpark and inadequate shelter cited as the top concerns. It is the only station to be in the bottom 10 in the 2015, 2017 and 2019 biennial survey, this time receiving a score of 3.43 out of 10. More than 24,500 commuters completed the statewide survey last November, rating their satisfaction of Victoria’s 311 Public Transport

RACV Senior Manager Peter Kartsidimas said it was concerning that Aircrat was consistently in the bottom three. “RACV is particularly concerned about the results from Aircrat as it is the second lowest rated station in the state for this year’s results, having been voted third lowest in 2017 and the worst in 2015,” he said. “he biggest issues raised by respondents at Aircrat was overcrowding on trains, diiculty inding a car spot and inadequate shelter, and RACV saw that there was a consistent theme
of accessibility for commuters, like poor bus connections and carpark issues. “As the population continues to boom, we need genuine alternatives for getting to the station including reliable bus connections and better walking and cycling paths.” Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said Aircrat’s ranking was disappointing but no surprise. “Car parking is a mess, there is no formal bike storage, pedestrian routes are inadequate and unsafe – Central Avenue, Point Cook Road – and no bus services connect to the station
during morning and evening peak times,” she said. “Standing on the platform waiting for a train also provides no protection from wind and rain and the entire station precinct has no amenity value. “During consultation for the removal of the Aviation Road level crossing, council and the community advocated for improvements to the way traic and people move around the area. “hree years later, we still advocate for these key issues. “Council is hopeful they will be addressed when the remainder of the rail crossing removal project is completed.”

A zebra at Werribee Open Range Zoo is recovering from a special medical procedure. Female Plains zebra Zaide underwent an operation on the open savannah recently, as keepers and veterinary staf worked to remove part of her tail to treat a pre-existing injury. Ater senior veterinarian Bonnie McMeekin sedated Zaide, the team quickly moved in to surround the unconscious zebra as her herd watched on. Once the tail was successfully treated, keepers moved to a safe distance to monitor Zaide’s recovery. Zari, Zaide’s four-month-old daughter, kept close to her mother for the rest of the day. Zoo savannah keeper Mark Ireland said he and his colleagues believed one of the zebra stallions might have injured Zaide’s tail by biting it. “Over time it’s healed up and become a little bit bulbous on the end, causing a bit of a lesion

Models strike a pose Young people from all walks of life participated in a modelling competition at Paciic Werribee earlier this month. On the weekend of March 7 and 8, the shopping hub hosted the state inal of the 2021 Top Model Australia competition. he annual competition searches the nation for boys and girls aged between 15 to 26 years old, who would like to become international models. he Werribee event was hosted as a variety of runway shows, featuring autumn and winter fashion from retailers. Joining the judging panel for the competition were Love Island Australia’s Matthew Zukowski, the Top Model 2018 winner Hope Ellen, Miss World Australia 2017 Esma Voloder, Hollywood producer
Nancy Rizk and Iva Marra from Yummy Mummies. he event was MC’d by Sarah Roza from the television show Married at First Sight. Young people from across Victoria – including Waurn Ponds, Maidstone, Westmeadows and Broadmeadows – participated in the state inal competition. Ten aspiring models were selected to progress to the competition’s national inal, which will be held later this year. Plea for urgent road upgrade By Alesha Capone Hundreds of people have thrown their support behind a petition calling for the upgrade of a “dangerous” road which runs between the municipalities of Melton and Wyndham. he Change.org petition, which is calling for action on Troups Road South, has been signed by more than 710 people. A resident who has lived on Troups Road South for around 30 years, Michelle (who asked for her surname to be withheld), started the petition and also a Facebook page called the Troups Road South Action Page. he petition says: “he current condition of the road is extremely dangerous as there are dust plumes that are generated by vehicles

which causes traic to be blinded. “It’s like playing Russian Roulette in your car. “Also the gravel topping means that vehicles are losing control with accidents occurring on
a daily basis.” Michelle said that within the past ive years, the amount of traic using Troups Road South – which runs between Boundary Road and Greigs Road – had increased signiicantly, including heavy articulated vehicles and commercial vehicles. Michelle said Troups Road South was also used as a detour whenever Hopkins Road was closed. She said residents were lobbying for the Troups Road South speed limit to be lowered from 80 km/h to 60km/h and for the road to be sealed. “he dust isn’t settling, it’s getting worse – when it rains, it becomes a pothole-ridden road,” she said. Michelle said she worried about the safety of
her two sons, who are on their P-plates, while driving on the road. “If we didn’t live on the road, I would tell them to avoid it at all costs,” she said. Melton council’s manager of engineering services, Sam Romaszko, said: “he upgrade of Troups Road South to a sealed rural road standard is a priority for council. “It’s included in our long-term capital works program and has been referred to the 2020-21 budget for funding consideration. “Council will continue to maintain Troups Road South in accordance with our Road Management Plan. “Due to the current traic volumes, council is carrying out regular maintenance to ensure any defects are managed appropriately.”
Kinder registrations open Registrations are now open for three and four year-old kindergarten places, which will be available in Wyndham next year. Wyndham’s family friendly city portfolio holder, Cr Mia Shaw urged parents and guardians to register to be included in the irst round of kindergarten ofers. “Kindergarten enrolments for 2021 need to be submitted by 31st May,” Cr Shaw said. “Kindergarten is an important part of a child’s development. “It helps children to develop communication skills that assist with reading and writing, gain conidence, develop a sense of responsibility and independence, make new friends and more.” Cr Shaw said that research shows that
high-quality early childhood, health and education services could have huge beneits, in terms of children’s lifelong wellbeing. “Wyndham has the second highest number of children enrolled in kinder in Victoria, and the children that go to these kindergartens are part of one our fastest growing age groups,” she said. “Council’s system allocates places at kindergartens according to our established criteria.” To download registration forms, visit www. wyndham.vic.com.au or call 9742 0777. Speed camera is a high earner By Alesha Capone A speed camera site in Little River has been named the sixth-highest earning in the state, during a three-moth period. Between July and September last year, the camera site covering three Melbourne-bound lanes of the Princes Freeway at the Point Wilson bridge issued 7683 infringements. he site earned revenue of $663,822, according to igures released on the Cameras Save Lives website last week.
Seventh on the list of the state’s top 50 earning camera sites was the intersection of Geelong Road and Droop Street in Footscray, where 3561 infringements – amounting to $632,727 in ines – were issued. Elsewhere in the west, the cameras covering lanes three and four southbound of the Western Ring Road, at the Fullarton Road bridge in Keilor Park, issued 2008 infringements and earned $521,561 in ines. he camera covering the lanes of the Western Ring Road in Laverton North, near Boundary
Road (northbound, on the Boundary Road south side gantry) issued 1642 infringements, which amounted to $398,402 in ines. he state’s highest-earning camera was located at the intersection of Warrigal Road and Batesford Road, Chadstone, issuing 7683 infringements and earning more than $1.89 million in ines during the three months. Last year, the state government committed more than $120 million dollars to roll out more mobile road safety cameras across Victoria. Victoria Police oicers have also been
given greater powers for on-the-spot license suspensions for excessive speeding, to help stop hoon drivers. Last year, 263 Victorians lost their lives on the state’s roads. Fatal crashes were up across every road user group. Speeding, drink and drug driving, distraction, fatigue and not wearing seatbelts were all common contributing factors to the road toll. Speed was a factor in 22 per cent of crashes, and around one in ive crashes involved fatigue.
Master plan revealed he future development of Wyndham Vale North Reserve is a step closer. A 10-year master plan for the recreation reserve, located on Honour Avenue and Black Forest Road in Wyndham Vale, was adopted at this month’s council meeting. It will include three new soccer pitches, two new cricket ovals, three new cricket nets and exercise equipment suitable for people of all age groups. he irst stage of construction will upgrade the community pavilion with modern, comfortable changeroom facilities for players and oicials. Sports development portfolio holder Cr Peter Maynard said community members provided key feedback on the plan during the consultation phase last year. “I am pleased to conirm council is planting more indigenous trees on site and installing bike racks as a direct result of community input,” Cr Maynard said. “And more broadly, we are upgrading this
reserve for soccer and cricket facilities in line with the Wyndham Sports Strategy 2045, which community members also contributed to. “hese upgrades will ensure Wyndham Vale’s soccer and cricket teams can grow and thrive and the play equipment will encourage children, parents and grandparents to get active together and embrace their sense of adventure.” he reserve will also include loodlighting, cricket practice nets, extensions to the shared pavilion including change rooms, new barrier netting and landscaping. Stage two of the masterplan will include changes to the Iramoo Community Centre, Iramoo Kindergarten, Iramoo Scouts, a CFA Shed and parkland. Armed robber sentenced By Alesha Capone A man who wore a gold knuckleduster while committing an armed robbery in Werribee has been sentenced to a community correction order. Rhyce Andrusiak, 27, faced the County Court last month, where he pleaded guilty to the armed robbery and two unrelated summary charges of possessing a prohibited weapon and possessing cartridge ammunition without a licence. he court heard that Andrusiak was
with co-ofender Isikeli Walls and another, unknown male when he committed the armed robbery on September 2 last year. About 12.30am, Andrusiak and the two co-ofenders drove to Chirnside Park football oval. Walls approached a car in which three 18-year-old males were sitting, and opened the driver’s door. Judge Irene Lawson said that Walls “stood over” the young man in the driver’s seat and removed the keys from the ignition, before demanding his phone and wallet.
At the same time, Andrusiak – who was wearing a gold-coloured knuckleduster on his right hand – forcibly opened the front passenger-side door of the vehicle and yelled at the passenger, “Give me your phone, give me your wallet”. Judge Lawson said Andrusiak also demanded the passenger’s gold watch. An unidentiied male approached the rear passenger side of the vehicle and demanded the third passenger get out and hand over his wallet and phone. he trio then drove of.
he incident was reported to police. Oicers later executed a search warrant at Andrusiak’s home, where they found a taser, two gold-coloured knuckledusters, a press seal bag containing two shotgun cartridges, a press seal bag containing two .22 rim ire cartridges and an extendable baton. Judge Lawson sentenced Andrusiak to a two-year community correction order, including 200 hours of community work and rehabilitation for drugs. At a separate trial, Walls, 24, was sentenced to a 12-month community correction order.
Driven to succeed Truganina’s Ashley Beeby has been recognised as a dedicated young achiever with a drive and passion for her chosen industry. Ms Beeby was presented with the overall Inspirational Young Achiever of the Year gong at the Kangan Institute’s Industry Excellence Awards last month. She also received a $500 cash prize sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pascoe Vale. “Winning this award was an incredible feeling that really highlighted the conclusion and success of my VET course,” Ms Beeby said. “I felt really proud to have been a part of Kangan’s Heavy Vehicle Key Client program.” Ms Beeby, an apprentice, specialises in engine diagnosis and repair. “My interest in the automotive industry was a random event,” she said. “I signed up to work experience with my current employer, Cummins, in year 10 without realising what I had signed up to – I
attended anyways and loved it. “I haven’t looked back since.” Ms Beeby said she was aiming to complete her apprenticeship and pursue a role which includes leadership and mentorship within the industry, so that she can have a positive impact on apprentices and technicians. “he opportunities for women to step into male-dominated trades are increasing, and to anyone – female, male, other – who is interested in any trade my advice is to go for it,” she said. “Just because you might approach the work diferently, doesn’t make you any less capable or valuable.” Ms Beeby has also been named a semi-inalist for the 7News Victorian Young Achievers Awards – Kangan Institute Inspirational TAFE Student Award, of which the winners will be announced in June. Random act of kindness By Esther Lauaki Eileen Relf is searching for the two kind strangers that came to her aid in Werribee. “I am so taken back by the kindness and generosity of these two people and I want to thank them,” Eileen said. he 88-year-old grandmother became lost ater she set of on March 5 for a walk from her home at Federation Village to Werribee Terrace Aged Care – about a 25 minute trek. to the nursing home on Russell Street,” Eileen said. “I thought I knew where it was … but then I got lost. “When Frank called his daughter to come and pick me up I told him I was happy to walk and he said, ‘No, you’ve walked long enough’. “It was so nice for someone to do this.” Eileen’s son-in-law Geof Haynes said that the “iercely independent” woman who struggles with memory loss had set out to organise respite care for her husband. “he aged care place … is quite some distance
from her home,” Mr Haynes told Star Weekly. “She proceeded down Duncans Road almost all the way down to the freeway, where the 7-Eleven garage is, only to realise … she was lost.” “Unfortunately, Eileen didn’t get Frank’s last name, so she has not been able to thank them both for their help. “Her request is to send a thank you message … in the hope that they see it and know how much they restored my mother-in-law’s faith in society.”

Wyndham inventor Joe Ferlazzo has designed an eco-friendly home for animals afected by the recent bushires. Mr Ferlazzo is part of Grow With Joe, a group of volunteers who strive to make a diference for disadvantaged individuals and the environment by upscaling recycled materials into useful items. Mr Ferlazzo said the plight of wildlife who survived the bushires had struck a chord with him. “I felt sorry for the animals who were let – I was going, ‘Far out, what can I do?’” he said. In response, he created the LOG INN, an artiicial log made from recycled wood, to provide animals, such as potoroos, native mice, lizards and ground birds a home until their native habitat is restored. Mr Ferlazzo said the LOG INNs featured a bale system, to prevent access by feral cats and foxes. he LOG INNs are constructed using only

Wheely good time Students from Bellbridge Primary School participated in National Ride2School Day on Friday. he occasion marked the sixth year in which the Hoppers Crossing school has taken part in the annual cycling event. Bellbridge’s assistant principal Belinda Onofretchook said the school aimed to have at least half of its pupils to ride, scoot or walk to school every day, even in winter months. “We have around 700 enrolments, so at least 350 students travel actively to school each day,” she said. Ms Onofretchook said there were many beneits of riding a bike to school, including reducing the number of cars on the road; improved health and itness for youngsters; and
increased independence and social interaction. “My advice to a parent thinking about their child riding to school for the irst time is to walk or ride with your child to familiarise themselves with the route to school,” she said. “Ensure they are aware of safety procedures when crossing roads. “Younger students are encouraged to walk or ride with older siblings or with friends. “Travel along our school’s active travel paths – red, blue or green.” Ms Onofretchook said every week the school held a “Wheel and Walk Wednesday”, in which children were encouraged to walk or ride to school. “he classes that have the highest active travel rates each week get a trophy and sole use of a playground for one recess/lunch break.”

MY WYNDHAM John Depetro is a familiar face to many people in Wyndham. He runs John he Barber in Watton Street, Werribee. Mr Depetro chats with Alesha Capone. How long have you been a barber? All my life, around 40 years. It was always something I was interested in. How long have you been operating here? I’ve been in Werribee for about 15 years. Before that, I used to run a barbershop in Bourke Street in the city.

What do you enjoy most about your work? Mixing with people all day long, and getting to talk to them. You get to know a lot of things and lots of gossip. I’ve also made a lot of friends. Has anything changed in the industry, across the past four decades? he styles have changed, a few over the past few years. You’ve got to learn all the new styles. Does your profession involve any challenges? New clients can be a challenge. You have to work with them and get to know what style they are looking for – long, short or medium length. You’re also on your feet all day. Do you have any clients who have been coming to you for 10 or 15 years now? Yes, some in fact for longer, who used to come to my barbershop in the city.
Has Watton Street changed much across the past 15 years? It used to be a lot quieter and there are now heaps more people around. Have any other Watton Street businesses been here as long as you?
Bruno’s Deli, across the road, has been here for a long time. he barbershop itself actually used to be a lock-up garage.
You have got to have a bit of a passion for it, to start of with. Find an apprenticeship and start learning, it’s a good industry to get into.
What advice would you give young people, who are thinking about becoming a barber or hairdresser?
What do you like to do outside of work? I like cars – fast cars. I also like pool, but I haven’t played for a number of years now.

Catholic Education Week Five young students to receive bursaries A partnership between six schools aims to create a dynamic, quality Catholic learning community with strong parish links in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The schools are Thomas Carr College, St James the Apostle, St Clare’s, St Francis of Assisi, St Peter Apostle and St John Apostle primary schools. Thomas Carr principal Craig Holmes says the college has been working in conjunction with the primary schools to offer bursaries. “One grade 6 student from each of the Catholic ‘feeder’ schools, who is enrolled to attend Thomas Carr College next year, will be presented with a bursary each year totalling $2000 across Years 7-10,” Mr Holmes explains. “Each recipient, decided by their primary school, must be currently enrolled and accepted to attend Thomas Carr.” He says to be eligible for the bursaries, students should show signiicant commitment to both their school and wider community, as well as to their studies, co-curricular activities and have great relationships with primary school staff and students. Bursaries will be presented by Mr Holmes at whole-school assemblies at each of the primary schools. Seamless transition from primary to secondary school is a strong focus for each of the ive schools, with staff input and collaboration received at regular combined meetings. “The college and the primary schools work together each year to develop the grade 5 visits program,” explains Mr Holmes. “These visits mark the beginning of the transition program, on which the schools work tirelessly and with an understanding of its importance.”

50 years: A success story This is a signiicant year for MacKillop College as it celebrates 50 years of Catholic education. 2020 began with a celebration of the Eucharist at the Opening School Mass, led by Archbishop Peter A. Comensoli, and a welcome to all students and families – particularly the Year 7 cohort.
Looking back The College began as a single prefab building, with just four classrooms and 102 students. It was an ‘experiment’ that strove to be a contemporary educational establishment, living by the commitment and inclusivity shown by the Josephites and, ultimately, the College’s namesake, St Mary MacKillop.
The present Today, the 1970 ‘experiment’ is a multi-complex facility, fostering a passion for learning, cultural inclusion and diversity. Designed to meet current demands and cater for the unique needs of the community and students, the College has a gym, chapel, amphitheatre, a digital technology hub, music and ibre centre, art rooms, and food technology kitchens. The grounds have grown apace with learning and teaching initiatives. An example of this is the separate Year 9 campus, allowing half the cohort to break the learning mould entirely for a full semester. Students are given the opportunity to address

Student-run extra-curricular groups include HarMacK, with a focus on cultural diversity and inclusivity; and EcoMacK, developing strategies for sustainability on campus and in the community.
Zoo Crew is about hands-on experience in animal husbandry. International programs and local volunteer projects also foster students’ personal growth.

SPORT Reds given football lesson in FFA Cup elimination Short of a victory, Hoppers Crossing got what it wanted out of its FFA Cup clash with Whittlesea United at Grange Reserve on Saturday. he Reds went down 3-0 to United, a side that sits one league above them in the Football Victoria ranks, but still got the tough examination they desired ahead of Saturday’s season-opening date with Westgate at Grange Reserve. “Under realistic opinions, we were never going to win the cup,” Reds coach Shaun Barbara said. “It was exciting to be able to test ourselves against a higher opponent and put ourselves into a more pressured environment. “It was a good hit out.” While the better side undoubtedly won on the day, Hoppers Crossing was not without its chances to cause a few headaches for Whittlesea United. First half chances fell to Liam McDermott,
Fabio Albuquerque and Takuya Yoshimi that might have nestled into the back of the net on another day. “If we took maybe even one or two of those chances, it becomes a very diferent ball game,” Barbara said. “We didn’t and they were quite clinical when they got their chances in front of goal.” Hoppers Crossing was competitive in patches, but it was not enough against a Whittlesea United team that never dropped of. he Reds were taken out of their usual rhythm by United’s incessant pressure. “hey were quite intense and put a lot of pressure on us,” Barbara said. “hey’ve got a couple of big boys in their team that forced us to make some uncharacteristic mistakes. “It was a good test for us in terms of their level of aggression and intent to harass us and
force us into mistakes. “It was a good learning curve, so we’ll take a lot out of the game.” Washington Takudzwa Bgoni was irst class for Hoppers Crossing in goal. While he conceded three on the day, the Reds could have sufered even further without his intervention. “Washy was certainly in some ripping form,” Barbara said. “He made some great saves.” Barbara is happy with Hoppers Crossing’s build-up to the new season. A big focus was integrating new recruits Alex Martinez, an electrifying midielder from Westgate, and Yui Kishimoto, a midield distributor from Japan, into the line-up. Grand plans for Werribee By Lance Jenkinson Werribee has produced a win for the ages to advance to the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west group grand inal. he Tigers have set up an all-western suburbs decider against Williamstown ater claiming a seven-wicket victory over Yarraville in the semi-inal at Yarraville Oval at the weekend. Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien rated the win as one of the best in his time at the club. “It rates pretty high up there to be honest,” he said. “To chase down 240, yeah, it was good conditions, but 240 in a inal is never easy. “We knew if we batted well and batted our overs, we’d be quite conident of getting the score, but still a big run chase in a inal, it’s tough no matter what conditions you are playing in.” Werribee restricted Yarraville to a gettable 9-241 of 80 overs. he Tigers new ball operators Jonathan Burton and James Freeman had a major say in the outcome of the match. he pair combined to bowl 48 overs, 15 maidens, 5-101, with Burton taking 2-55 of 27 and Freeman snaring a team-best 3-46 of 21. “It was a monstrous efort from them,” O’Brien said. “Jono got the irst one early and Jim got the next two, so I think we had them 3-18, so we were looking to really attack them at that stage. “Yarraville batted well, particularly [Luke] Reid was fantastic for 74. “We dropped a couple of catches here and there where we could’ve really put our stamp on it, but they got away from us before tea a bit, so I brought Jono and Jim back ater tea and they really put the clamps on them.” Werribee’s run chase got of to a shaky start with Andrew Ford walking back to the pavilion with a duck. he Dean brothers – Matt and Shaun – steadied the ship with a 58-run second wicket partnership before Matt went out for 19. O’Brien came and went for 13 and the Tigers run chase was at the crossroads at 3-75. It was the last blemish on the Werribee scorecard as Shaun Dean combined with Matthew Gudde for an unbroken 167-run stand that guided the side to victory. Dean inished with a patient 96 not out of 181 balls, including 13 fours. State league football has become the latest victim of the global coronavirus pandemic. AFL Victoria revealed on Monday evening that the Victoria Football League will be suspended until at least May 31. A decision about the rest of the season will be decided once further assessments are made regarding the impact COVID-19 has on the Australian community at the time. It is a major blow for local clubs Werribee and Williamstown, who rely heavily on memberships and gate takings for their survival. he NAB League, an elite underage pathway system, will follow suit and shut down over the same period. Some local football competitions, including the Western Region Football League, are yet to announce their intentions for 2020. he WRFL has already cancelled a number of coaching workshops and clubs have been proactive with urging their players and staf to take extra precautions with their general hygiene. he irst local sport to call of its competitions was Big V basketball. he league was due to play its opening round last weekend, but decided to suspend all games until at least April 13. Baseball, bowls and cricket leagues went ahead with inals as planned last weekend. 11-goal win brings Bees some joy By Lance Jenkinson It was only for 90 minutes, but Werribee City provided its fans with a welcome distraction from what is going on in the world around them. he coronavirus pandemic has reached all corners of the globe, but few countries have been harder hit so far than Italy. With Werribee City formed by a group of Italian immigrants in the 1960s, and still a strong Italian presence through the Italian Sports Club of Werribee, these are trying times for many involved with the club. For those in attendance on Saturday, the Bees goal-fest was a little joy to distract from the concerns. You would have run out of ingers trying to keep up with Werribee City’s scoring power in its annihilation of Western Suburbs. From a football point of view, Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini warned against getting too excited about the 11-0 thrashing. He understands where both sides are at in terms of their development, with Werribee City a contender for the NPL 2 title and Western Suburbs embarking on a rebuild in state league 2. “You’ve got to keep it in perspective I suppose,” Sabbadini said. “he boys are playing pretty well at the moment, so we’re looking forward to a good start to the NPL season. “We spoke about it at half-time, about sticking to the same systems that we’re trying to adopt. “hey responded really well. hey kept going and scored a bag full of goals.” he sharpness of Werribee City in front of goal was a sight to behold. Ssemakula, Yamagishi and Evans had been standouts over pre-season for the Bees, so Sabbadini was pleased to see it translate into good match-day form.
“All three of them had very good pre-seasons,” he said. “It doesn’t surprise me that they score so many goals.” With the game all but won, Werribee City gave teenage goalkeeper Charlie Emery a stint in goal in the second half. It was selless starting goalkeeper Nikola Kostadinoski who got in the ear of Sabbadini about giving Emery a shot. “Nikola whispered to me at half-time, are you putting Charlie on?” Sabbadini said.
“He was quite happy with him getting the chance.” While a little raw, Emery is seen as a top goalkeeping prospect for Werribee City. He kept the clean sheet going through the second half. “He’s an up-and-coming keeper, a tall lad and a great kid,” Sabbadini said. “He’s got a good future ahead of him.“ Werribee City will begin its NPL 2 season away to Kingston City on Monday night.

Sports shorts NAB League An eventful opening three rounds has come to anti-climax for Western Jets in the NAB League girls. The Jets had a win, a draw and a loss in the opening three games, their latest result a 25-point loss to Greater Western Victoria Rebels at Mars Stadium on Saturday. The Jets will be stuck in the middle of the ladder after the league was suspended because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
By Lance Jenkinson Shae Moate’s connection to the lacrosse community goes back to the age of six. For the past 11 years, the 17-year-old long stick midielder from Williamstown has slowly climbed the rungs from grassroots lacrosse to the summit, earning selection for Australia’s under-19 team. “Coming from under-12 lacrosse to playing in state sides and eventually a national team, it’s something you couldn’t even dream about,” Moate said. “All the work over the 18 months of trials and camps and the long days out in the ield and the work put in the gym and building to become an elite athlete, it’s a great feeling for it to be able to come good and be able to make the team.” Moate will have a lot of familiar faces in the team when he travels with the Australian under-19s to Limerick in Ireland for the world championships in July. He is one of eight players from his home club Williamstown to have made the team. Others include Edison Pyke, Harry Gibson, Brock Gourlay, Chinaka Egbujor, Lachlan Warren, Will Olver and Lachy Hodge. “hey’re all kids I’ve grown up playing with since I was six years old,” Moate said. Moate progressed through the Western Metro team into the Victorian side. It has been a successful time in the Big V team for Moate, which has included national titles in the past two years. In April, Moate will represent Victoria on the national stage again, desperately seeking a three-peat of titles. “To win a national title is an unbelievable feeling,” he said. “We want to go out this year and win the title again for Victoria and complete the hat-trick.” Moate could not have asked for a better pathway

All Santa Fe’s sport a touchscreen, the Active making do with a 7-inch display. Added to this is an array of buttons and knobs, among them air-con dials (no climate control here).
