Heart and harmony Newport’s Sacred Heart Primary School celebrated Harmony Day on Monday, ahead of Cultural Diversity Week from March 21 to 29. LOTE teacher Rosaria La Motta said the school had children from more than 30 cultural backgrounds. he children wore national dress or orange-coloured clothes – the colour for Harmony – to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. “It was to teach the importance of everybody belonging and showing respect for everyone and embracing the richness of all cultural diversity,” Ms La Motta said. Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said the municipality was home to people from more than 140 diferent countries with residents speaking more than 100 languages. “Our Hobsons Bay community is rich in diversity, and Cultural Diversity Week presents a great opportunity to celebrate this, connect and learn more about others and their backgrounds,” she said. United in virus ight By Benjamin Millar and Goya Dmytryshchak Inner-west residents are banding together in response to the growing coronavirus threat amid mass closures, event cancellations and unprecedented new laws coming into immediate efect. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews declared a state of emergency on Monday as the number of conirmed COVID-19 cases in Victoria surged past 70 and approached 400 nationwide. A shortage of testing kits has forced Western Health to limit testing to those strongly suspected of having contracted the coronavirus. “We will only test those who have a fever or acute respiratory infection and have recently travelled overseas, or you have been notiied

by the Department of Health and Human Services that you have been in close contact with a conirmed case of COVID-19,” it said. Maribyrnong council has shut all public libraries, community centres, recreation centres and its customer service centre until at least April 14, while Hobsons Bay’s libraries and other community facilities will be closed for at least 30 days from Wednesday. Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter said the “unprecedented” decision followed advice from the federal and state governments. “Most council services will continue to operate as normal, including waste, recycling, parking services and park management. However, we ask community members to contact us by phone or email.” Many residents have stepped up to help the

elderly and others in need amid service closures and supermarket shortages. New Facebook group Westside Melbourne Coronavirus Outreach was set up to link people hoping to help those impacted in any way by the coronavirus or shortages of essential products. Altona’s Roni Burger is putting notes in neighbours’ letterboxes and using a Facebook group she founded, Melbourne Friendships, to establish networks of helpers. Neighbourhood Watch Altona Meadows Inc has put a call out for donations to ensure elderly and sick neighbours don’t miss out on essentials. Australia’s irst supermarket to announce an exclusive shopping hour for the elderly and disabled described Tuesday’s irst run as excellent and calm. Altona’s IGA supermarket on Sunday became the irst store to announce

the move, opening at 6am on Tuesday, one hour before its usual time. Meanwhile a blanket ban has been placed on non-essential mass gatherings of more than 500 people and a swathe of local events have been postponed or cancelled. Basketball Victoria has cancelled all activities, programs and leagues while VFL and VFLW matches are postponed until at least May 31. he Sons of the West program has also been postponed. Museums Victoria has closed all of its public sites including Scienceworks, while Footscray Community Arts Centre is postponing the Wominjeka festival and a host of other planned events and exhibitions. he Substation arts venue said most events in the next two months were already cancelled or highly unlikely to go ahead.

Protected pine tree cut down By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council is considering what action to take against a housing service for the homeless ater a large Norfolk pine tree was chopped down without permission on a Footscray block being cleared for development. Protection of the 60-year-old tree was a condition of Launch Housing’s approval for development at 175-177 Ballarat Road with relocatable homes. A Launch Housing spokeswoman said the tree was removed “by error”. “he error occurred over the recent

long-weekend and was made by a sub-contractor during site preparation,” she said. “We are both shocked and disappointed: It was never part of the project plan to remove the tree.” he spokeswoman said that the sub-contractor was given a copy of the construction drawings and the arborist report, which both indicated that the tree should not be removed. “his is highly regrettable and our contractor has sent sincere apologies.” Council’s planning services director Nigel Higgins said no permit was sought for the

removal and appropriate actions are being considered. “he tree was required to be protected as it was a 60-year-old signiicant tree, it was also large in size and added signiicantly to the local amenity,” he said. “We are investigating the enforcement action to be taken and reminding the permit holder of the value council places on signiicant trees and the need to adhere to permit conditions.” he land is owned by Department of Transport, which leases it to the Department of Health and Human Services for transitional housing.

Club member and book project manager Greg Donohue recounts one anecdote from a cold winter’s night in 1953. “A man whose identity remains a mystery opened the door to two oicers, who announced themselves as licensing police,” he said. “he friendly club member invited them to come

in and make themselves at home. hey did precisely that, and on entering found several gentlemen with glasses in their hands, then watched as the steward appeared and pulled four beers – for which money was collected.” he matter went to court and under oath the steward, John Henry Maskell, explained that he was in the bar for the purpose of selling pies. “Nobody believed him and the poor chap was ined two pounds,” Mr Donohue said. he club is inviting people to the book launch following barefoot social bowls on Heritage Handicap Day, from 3pm on March 28.

Graham Leslie White, 58, faces 12 charges laid by the Environment Protection Authority over the illegal storage of dangerous chemicals at three Epping warehouses. he charges relate to activity at the sites between May and December, 2018. Prosecutors will allege White created a serious threat to public health and substantial risk of damage to the environment. he charges are the culmination of lengthy investigations by the EPA into the stockpiling of dangerous chemicals at warehouses across Melbourne linked with White. hey come on top of 55 charges laid by WorkSafe in December under the Dangerous Goods Act, relating to four warehouses in Epping and one in Campbellield. WorkSafe alleges that White failed at each site to take all reasonable precautions to prevent any ire or explosion of dangerous goods in his ownership, control or possession, or neglected to dispose of them safely. he EPA is continuing to investigate potential breaches of environmental laws in the lead-up to the August 2018 Tottenham ire. A iling hearing on the EPA charges will be held at Melbourne Magistrates Court on April 6.

A man sought help at a McDonald’s restaurant after being shot in Altona Meadows early on Monday. Police said the man, aged in his 20s, was shot in nearby Oakdene Grove about 12.30am on Monday. He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Cars targeted A 29-year-old Keilor Downs man has been charged with a number of offences after being caught trying to break into cars in Footscray. Crossing design released By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown will either have a “sky rail” over Ferguson Street, or the rail line will be lowered under the road, under two options released by the state government for community consultation last week. As reported by Star Weekly in September, Hobsons Bay council has formally endorsed rail under road as the community’s preferred option for the level crossing removal at Ferguson Street. he Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) last week issued a preliminary design assessment, which stated options to raise or lower the road had been ruled out because of property acquisition and impacts to connections for pedestrians, cyclists and road users. More than 110 trains and 22,000 vehicles pass through the crossing each week day, according to government igures. Williamstown Crossing Group spokesman Lorenzo de Falco, who is also on the council’s Ferguson Street Williamstown Level Crossing Community Interest Group, said the community clearly wanted rail under road and to preserve North Williamstown train station. “For example, the ‘rail under’ [design] at Mentone will include a new community space and gardens, a new station for the underground platforms and retain the existing heritage station buildings for community use,” he said. “All in all, we remain concerned that this project will not address the broader issue of increased traic – particularly trucks – and that community consultation is just a tick in a box, while ‘rail over’ has already been decided and facts are being distorted to justify it. removed in 2021–2022. People can view the options and provide feedback at drop-in sessions to be held at at Williamstown Town Hall on hursday, March 26, from 5-7pm, and Saturday, March 28, from

Dress code for citizenship ceremonies Hobsons Bay council has developed an Australian citizenship ceremonies dress code in response to a “patronising” request from the Department of Home Afairs. he new dress code was created ater the federal government forced local councils to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day. Hobsons Bay’s code “encourages” attendees to wear “smart casual attire that relects the signiicance of the occasion” and states “attendees are also welcome to wear their own national, traditional or cultural dress”. Cr Sandra Wilson told last week’s council meeting the dress code wasn’t needed but councillors were adopting it “because we must”. “I think it’s a little bit patronising … nanny nation to tell us what we should be pushing down for our recipients of Australian citizenship,” she said. Greens councillor Jonathon Marsden said he agreed. “his is something of a paternalistic decree from the federal government and … is particularly silly,” he said. “We are not fashion police … While I would expect my mum to come down on me if I wore thongs to my cousin’s funeral, I would not expect the Prime Minister to presume to tell us, or people who are collecting their citizenship, how to dress.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Council staff walk off the job By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council staf have walked of the job for the irst time in more than two decades as union members and management failed to reach a new pay deal. Australian Services Union members overwhelmingly voted down a new workplace agreement with pay increases of 1.6 per cent per year, organiser Luke Cherry said on Monday. “We just got the results and 204 staf voted in favour of the agreement and 352 voted against it,” he said. Following the vote, a council spokesperson said in a written statement the

coronavirus was a new factor in negotiations. “We will continue conversations with the unions with the goal of coming to a fair and sustainable enterprise agreement that supports the same good working conditions staf have always enjoyed, while ensuring the organisation’s ongoing inancial sustainability,” the spokesperson stated. “Council and the unions will jointly assess the appropriateness of the timing of our negotiations in light of the current environment surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.” AUS branch executive president Billy King said members had not taken the four-hour

stop work lightly but as a last resort ater 12 months of negotiations and failing to reach a resolution in the Fair Work Commission. “Council have ofered a paltry 1.6 per cent pay rise, averaged over four years, which is well below industry standard,” he said. “We have [striking staf from] libraries, customer service, engineering, outdoor workers, planners, local laws, cleansing, maintenance, road repairs, assets – so most of council. “Staf are really disappointed that they have to do this. No one wants to go out and stop work and afect the community but they believe their hands are tied.”

RACV Senior Manager Peter Kartsidimas said it was concerning that Aircrat was consistently in the bottom three. “RACV is particularly concerned about the results from Aircrat as it is the second lowest rated station in the state for this year’s results, having been voted third lowest in 2017 and the worst in 2015,” he said. “he biggest issues raised by respondents at Aircrat was overcrowding on trains, diiculty inding a car spot and inadequate shelter, and RACV saw that there was a consistent theme

of accessibility for commuters, like poor bus connections and carpark issues. “As the population continues to boom, we need genuine alternatives for getting to the station including reliable bus connections and better walking and cycling paths.” Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said Aircrat’s ranking was disappointing but no surprise. “Car parking is a mess, there is no formal bike storage, pedestrian routes are inadequate and unsafe – Central Avenue, Point Cook Road – and no bus services connect to the station

during morning and evening peak times,” she said. “Standing on the platform waiting for a train also provides no protection from wind and rain and the entire station precinct has no amenity value. “During consultation for the removal of the Aviation Road level crossing, council and the community advocated for improvements to the way traic and people move around the area. “hree years later, we still advocate for these key issues. “Council is hopeful they will be addressed when the remainder of the rail crossing removal project is completed.”

Breaking down barriers Police and young people living in Melbourne’s west have come together to hit any lingering tensions for six. Organised by the Les Twentyman Foundation and now in its 11th year, he ‘Cops ‘n Kids Cricket Match’ held at Merv Hughes Oval in Footscray last Wednesday aims to break down barriers between youth and police. Victoria Police assistant commissioner Luke Cornelius, superintendent herese Fitzgerald and Maribyrnong local area commander Brooke Walker took part in the barbecue and cricket match, joined by Les Twentyman, Footscray MP Katie Hall and cricketing great Bill Ritchie. Former Victorian state player Graeme Vimpani was also on hand to provide some cricketing advice to the eager youngsters, along with former international cricketer Sarah Elliott. “Sport is an empowering builder of

community spirit creating role modelling and support for networks for young people, with today a great opportunity to be part of the fantastic work the Les Twentyman Foundation does with young Victorians,” Ms Elliott said. AC Cornelius said the match is a great way of connecting police and young people. “It helps them to see each other as people, with team sport a great way of building community, teaching us all to think of others,” he said. Les Twentyman said the event helps youth and police see each other in a more positive light. “We were seeing a lot of division between police and kids in the local area and wanted to break down these barriers,” he said. Neighbour killed over barking dog By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona man who shot dead a neighbour during a dispute over a barking dog was this month sentenced to six years jail with a four year minimum in the Supreme Court. Jason Lee Ashman, 49, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Dwayne James Wright, 26, in Civic Parade two days before Christmas, 2018. he court heard Mr Wright was returning to his unit with his girlfriend about 10.30pm on December 23, 2018. Mr Wright, who was on the autism spectrum, had been receiving support from nearby homelessness service, Latitude, and was

staying in transitional housing. He had to walk down a shared driveway to get home, past the home of Ashman’s ex-partner Vanessa Chumbley and their two daughters and step-daughter. Justice John Champion told the court that the Chumbleys’ dogs started barking and Mr Wright yelled at them to ‘shut up’ before going inside his unit. Upon hearing Mr Wright yell, Ashman’s step-daughter, Jemma Chumbley, grabbed a baseball bat and walked to Mr Wright’s unit to confront him. Mr Wright stood behind his security door, where he remained for the entire incident. Ashman came outside and said to his

daughter, ‘Get away from that junkie, he’s not worth it’. “Mr Wright said ‘I do ice, it’s not as bad as weed’,” Justice Champion said to Ashman in court. “You responded, ‘You are pathetic and disgusting and your whole life is based on drugs’. “You then put your hand on Jemma, as if to guide her back to the Chumbley’s unit. Mr Wright called out ‘Look at you, you paedophile’.” At this point, Jemma noticed Ashman was holding a 12-gauge, sawn-of shotgun. Justice Champion told the court that as Jemma tried to wrest the gun from Ashman, it

went of and the shot went through the security door of Mr Wright’s unit and hit him in the chest. Mr Wright’s girlfriend went to Westona railway station for help and when there was no reply from the emergency communications system on the platform, she boarded a train to Laverton where she approached two Protective Services Oicers. Police attended Mr Wright’s unit about 2.30am and found him lying in the doorway of the unit not breathing. Justice Champion said following the blast from Ashman’s shotgun he made no efort to establish whether Mr Wright was safe and led the scene.

Shae Moate’s connection to the lacrosse community goes back to the age of six. For the past 11 years, the 17-year-old long stick midielder from Williamstown has slowly climbed the rungs from grassroots lacrosse to the summit, earning selection for Australia’s under-19 team. “Coming from under-12 lacrosse to playing in state sides and eventually a national team, it’s something you couldn’t even dream about,” Moate said. “All the work over the 18 months of trials and camps and the long days out in the ield and the work put in the gym and building to become an elite athlete, it’s a great feeling for it to be able to come good and be able to make the team.” Moate will have a lot of familiar faces in the team when he travels with the Australian under-19s to Limerick in Ireland for the world championships in July. He is one of eight players from his home club Williamstown to have made the team. Others include Edison Pyke, Harry Gibson, Brock Gourlay, Chinaka Egbujor, Lachlan Warren, Will Olver and Lachy Hodge. “hey’re all kids I’ve grown up playing with since I was six years old,” Moate said. Moate progressed through the Western Metro team into the Victorian side. It has been a successful time in the Big V team for Moate, which has included national titles in the past two years. In April, Moate will represent Victoria on the national stage again, desperately seeking a three-peat of titles. “To win a national title is an unbelievable feeling,” he said. “We want to go out this year and win the title again for Victoria and complete the hat-trick.” Moate could not have asked for a better pathway

Clubbers in a classic inals ight By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville Club holds the ace in the pack to edge St Albans in what is turning out to be a Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division grand inal classic at Hansen Reserve. he Clubbers have a deep and experienced batting line-up, but top order batsman Will Sheridan undoubtedly holds the key to victory. Set a target of 260 for a irst innings result, the Clubbers are 4-165 and need a further 95 runs, but make no mistake, the pressure will come from the St Albans’ bowlers. Sheridan, the set batsman on 80 not out, will be crucial on day three. If he can re-load and ire with the bat, the Clubbers should easily pass the target. However, if Sheridan is removed cheaply, it would provide a massive boost for St Albans, which is already lited by two late wickets on day two. Yarraville Club coach Huss Hanif is backing Sheridan in. “He’s a class player,” Hanif said. “He knows how to bat these situations.” Sheridan combined with James Damjanovski (57) for a 114-run second wicket partnership that might be looked back upon as the match-winning stand if Yarraville Club wins.
