Registration for 5th KIPCO Tmkeen Award for Young Entrepreneurs launched Registration open for e-media and technology startups until November 5 About KIPCO The KIPCO Group is one of the biggest holding companies in the Middle East and North Africa, with consolidated assets of US$ 33 billion as at 30 June 2019. About Youth Empowerment Organization The First Youth Empowerment Symposium was held in 2012, and the annual event grew to become the starting point of Youth Empowerment Organization, which was officially formed in 2014. The Youth Empowerment Organization is an independent, private Non-Profit Organization (NPO) & Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

It is a national initiative that is delivered by youth to youth in a professional setting, with a global outreach towards economic advancements worldwide. The organization’s vision is to empower young people in order to drive a new era of economic development, growth and productivity. KIPCO – the Kuwait Projects Company – and the Youth Empowerment Organization (Tmkeen) have announced the start of registration for the annual KIPCO Tmkeen Award for Young Entrepreneurs. This is the fifth year that the two entities come together to organize the award, which focuses on entrepreneurial businesses in the e-media and technology sectors. Young entrepreneurs aged 18-33 with existing businesses established for no longer than five years and licensed in Kuwait are invited to visit the Tmkeen website (www.tmkeenkw.com) to apply for the award. Registration is open until November 5.

supporting the award. In addition, the first-place winner will be awarded US$ 15,000 in cash, while the second and third place winners will receive US$ 10,000 and US$ 5,000 respectively. On his part, Mr Abdulrahman Al Adsani, Head of the Tmkeen Symposium Organizing Committee, said: “At Tmkeen, it is our mission to educate young people and to inspire them to become entrepreneurs. Our collaboration with KIPCO, now in its fifth year, has allowed us to take a step further in supporting this rising business community by allowing them the opportunity to benefit from the expertise that KIPCO Group has to offer.” He added: “It is our ultimate goal to encourage young people to use their creativity to establish innovative small and medium enterprises, thereby contributing to the development of Kuwait’s business sector.” Eligible applicants for the award will be asked to submit detailed information about their business’s operational and financial performance. The first judging round will be held on November 18, where applicants will give a 5-7-minute presentation to a panel of business professionals from the KIPCO Group. Based on defined business criteria, the three applicants with the highest scores will be eligible to give a final presentation of 7-10 minutes at the KIPCO Tmkeen Award Startup Battle, and the official judging panel will select the winners. The winner of the grand prize will be announced during the Youth Empowerment Symposium.

BY: JACQUELINE MCELHONE Charlie Grosso, a true renaissance woman, has the unique ability to find a niche in the market that isn't being met—and to fill that void. Cultural competency, optimism, and a vision for facilitating human connection combine to guide Grosso to dream big, but also to execute that dream. Grosso isn't just a dreamer, she's a doer. And when she commits to a project—to a vision—she follows through. Her empathy instinctively drives her to empower other people, through any entrepreneurial venture she embarks on. No one can give better insight than Grosso herself—so here she is: I wanted to be an artist when I was young, but my mom would always tell me “no.” Children of Asian parents are expected to be doctors, lawyers, or bankers—especially children of my generation; I’m not sure if that has changed much. I didn’t understand the “no” in my mother’s reply, so I would go back every so often with different variations on being an artist: painter, fashion designer, writer. The answer was always “no.” Now when people ask me what I do, my answer depends on who's asking. Founder of Hello Future, writer, photographer, consultant—it just depends. Our world still has a very binary view of careers, [offering] little room for someone who has more than one passion. But an entrepreneur is responsible for juggling multiple professional titles. We’ve dubbed the entrepreneur as a “jack-of-all-trades,” but truly they are a “renaissance” person. I’ve always been a storyteller. How I’ve been able to express that has ebbed and flowed over time, but picking out stories and working to tell them with the end goal of bettering the lives of others has remained a constant throughout my career. Being a storyteller wasn’t the initial intent, but it has been the through line of my career. It is the core of what I do and what I love. ISSUE NO. 8

On Her Transition to Entrepreneurship The plan was to go straight from undergrad to grad school. I was in the middle of interviewing for an MFA program in Theatrical Design when I had a "come to Jesus moment"...I thought, what more would I have at the end of an MFA other than more debt and the qualifications to teach (and I had no interest in teaching at the time)? Continuing down [that] path didn’t seem interesting at all. So I pivoted and started my own photography business—something I was truly passionate about. Fortunately, I didn’t find the [entrepreneurial] learning curve to be steep. I had some great friends and mentors who were already established career photographers. They were there to help with any business questions, and I really took to the business aspect of the work. That path—the path of running a business and overseeing the success of a company—has been a foundational part of my career journey ever since.

On Why Photography Came First I’ve been a professional photographer for nearly 20 years. Photography demands a fluency of the left brain and the right, the technical and the artistic. I love that aspect of the medium. It is inherently a paradox: the truth and a lie. The work that I’m drawn to and [that I] create is about a moment—either a flex point in an imagined story, or the beginning/end of a story. It is a pictorial equivalent of that perfect opening sentence in a short story, the turning point in the action, that last moment before the screen fades to black and flashes “to be continued.” Photography is the last modern medium. It is one that everyone gets—especially now with the lowest barrier to entry—and I think that's pretty cool. PAGE 14

On Taking Risks I often feel bad when young, aspiring entrepreneurs come to me for advice. I tell them that [entrepreneurship] is not for them if they are risk-averse. Being an entrepreneur or a freelancer is hard and full of risks. There are no road maps or safety net[s].

Doubt and I are friends, especially after 20 years on my own. I think it would be weird if doubt didn’t show up from time to time. What I think is important to clarify in the conversation about doubt is the core of that feeling and what triggers it. Are you doubting the bigger vision? The path for growth? A particular strategy or tactic that is being implemented? What is it? Is it that you looked around and saw other’s success and wonder why you have not achieved the same? Sometimes, the idea is just ahead of its time. That doesn’t mean it was a bad idea. The market just wasn’t ready for it yet. Sometimes, the idea is great and the timing is right, but you are not capitalized enough to give it the necessary runway to “make it.”

On Pitching Yourself, And How She Pitches Herself When you’re talking about something that you’re truly passionate about, I think it resonates with others and helps pique their interest. It may not always pan out in a grant or media hit, but it at least gets the name out there and gets the wheels turning on how we can rethink a long-standing problem that has yet to be solved. Connecting with people on a level they can relate to is at the heart of any persuasion. Everyone has an understanding of home—even those without one, their lack of a home is their baseline understanding of this universal concept. By talking about Hello Future as a way not only for teens to land a job, but, beyond that, as a way for them to put down roots, that’s a really strong message that a lot of people can buy into.

portfolio from two decades of professional experience for the benefit of someone else, a cause, something that is beyond a corporate bottom line. I’ve been really drawn to the Middle East and have been watching the region closely since the Arab Spring. When the refugee crisis hit its peak in 2015, I felt it in my core. Home and identity are ideas I wrestle with personally, especially as someone who was sent to the U.S. by her parents at 11 years old. It informs my work at every turn. And I knew I could contribute to the crisis in some way. This lead to a move to Istanbul in 2016 and a lot of in-person conversations with refugee families in both Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan. Hello Future was founded on what I learned first-hand in the field with refugee families. Hello Future hits multiple notes on refugee response and development in innovative ways. First, in who we’re working with: refugee youths. Youth are the most underserved and, yet they are at the most critical juncture. Second, in what we’re actually providing: digital skills, yes, but also a platform for them to tell their own story, first-hand. The refugees’ needs extend beyond the tangible, such as education, to include the psychosocial: to be seen and heard, and have an opportunity to self-represent. To provide that outlet for refugees and add different color and tonality to the overall refugee narrative is very important to me.

...And What They Do We aim to create lifelong learners and prevent a lost generation of youth in a region that is ripe for radicalization and the other trappings that come with feelings of hopelessness. Hello Future is a holistic program, one that has been designed to scale as a plug-n-play companion to larger NGO development efforts and via our own expansion efforts with local, accredited teachers. We provide teens living in refugee camps (currently, Syrian refugees in Iraq) with mobile phones, connectivity and the training on how to properly use the technology and the Internet, the framework for how to engage online, and the essential tools that govern a digital life.

In the refugee context, where resources for education, communication, and self-expression are severely limited, the benefits of technology and the Internet can really amplify opportunities. We start there, in digital literacy and digital citizenship. Building on this foundation, we hope the teens will find positive ways for self-expression, add to the narrative complexity of the refugee/displaced dialogue, continue their education be it in a formal or informal setting, and have the necessary skills to compete in the 21st-century economy.

On The Present—And The Future Fostering connections, empowering others, and actively contributing to a more diverse narrative are core to what I’ve dedicated my life to. The topics change as do the strategies, but the goal is the same. It was challenging to break through the noise and get people to pay attention before 2016 and now, 570+ days into this administration, the

challenge of getting attention—be it from a media perspective or from donors, —is even harder. The work is important, maybe more now than ever, but the environment feels ever more difficult. It’s hard to know what the long-tail effect of your work will be. This morning I read a review of Crazy, Rich Asians and it talked a lot about how it will change the film industry and the way Asians/Asian-Americans are represented. Not all that dissimilar to the discussion around Black Panther. A new narrative has been introduced to the collective unconsciousness. I hope it’s true. I hope it does all it promises and more. But we won’t know for a while; 5, 10 maybe even 20 years. In this highly volatile and reactionary atmosphere, it can be really hard to think long-term and work on issue areas that are put on the back-burner in the public conversation. Yet the time to act and effect change is now.

How often have you been asked this? It’s one of the first things that’s proffered at an event, when networking, or in an interview. People want to know who you are, and what you do.

But do you really know who you are? In my experience, many entrepreneurs at the start of their business journey struggle with this question. They feel unconfident putting forward their business idea, or they may do so many things for their business that they’re not quite sure what to pick. Either way, it all comes down to knowing who you are.

How to define who you are and what you stand for In the early stages of starting up a business, there is a great deal of focus placed on all the components needed to create, launch and scale. You will be faced with questions like: What does the business need? What resources do we need to find? What processes will we have in place? What are our monthly, quarterly and annual marketing benchmarks? What are our financial projections? How can we best understand our customer journey? Etc. etc.

As a business owner, it can be so easy to get caught up in external situations and thinking about others in order to make the business happy that you forget to priorities yourself and your goals. What about your own happiness? Defining your core values, and those of your business, can make all the difference. There’s a reason you started your business - often it’s either to solve an unanswered problem, or to improve on an existing solution.

How to define your values Take a few minutes to ask yourself the following questions: 1. In life, what really matters to me? 2. What problem do I want to solve through my business? 3. What do I want people to feel when they engage in my brand? 4. If I sum this up in one sentence, what would the mission of my business be?

By nature, we are social beings and we thrive on connecting with others – remember it’s not supposed to be a lonely experience as an entrepreneur. Investing in your mental health like you would in your business finances is essential. Not only will this ensure that you are taking care of yourself in a holistic sense, but also, you’re taking care of the health of your business – after all, your business is an extension of you.

Know your worth Once you know what you and your business stand for, your bigger purpose, and the kind of product or service you are providing, you can also answer the big ticket question: what are you worth? Set the bar when it comes to your business offering, and be confident with what you do. Recall your personal values, and how you’re making a difference. Just remember, your own self-worth is not reflected in the company accounts. No matter the revenue of your business, your personal value remains the same. You deserve to succeed, to feel content in your work, and to prioritise yourself.

So, can you answer the question now? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. Make your business a purposeful one Another way to strengthen your business offering, and your confidence in your business, is to make it a purposeful one. A purposeful business is one that combines selling a product/service with tackling a problem or challenge in the world. The sale of your products and services become a vehicle for positive change - taking away the guilt that many entrepreneurs feel from making money. Here are a few steps you can take to develop your business into a purposeful one: 1. Define your purpose - what is important to you personally? 2. ‫ﻛﻴﻒ ﺗﻢ ﺑﻴﻊ أول ﺷﺤﻨﺔ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻘﻬﻮة؟‬ ‫ﺑﻌﺪ أن ﻧﺠﺤﺖ ﻓﻲ اﻧﺘﺎج أول ﺻﻨﻒ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺤﺒﻮب‬ ‫اﻟﺠﻴﺪة ﻟﻠﻘﻬﻮة‪ ،‬ﻋﺪت إﻟﻰ اﻟﻮﻻﻳﺎت اﻟﻤﺘﺤﺪة‬ ‫ﻟﺘﺼﻨﻴﻒ ﺟﻮدة اﻧﺘﺎج اﻟﻘﻬﻮة اﻟﻌﺪﻧﻴﺔ ﻣﻊ أﺣﺪ أﻫﻢ‬ ‫اﻟﺨﺒﺮاء ﻓﻲ ﻣﺠﺎل اﻟﻘﻬﻮة ‪ ،‬ﻛﺎﻧﻮا ﻗﺪ ﺣﻘﻘﻮا ﻧﺴﺒﺔ‬ ‫ﻣﺬاق ﻋﺎﻟﻴﺔ اﻟﺠﻮدة‪ ،‬ﻣﻤﺎ ﺟﻌﻞ ﺗﺼﻨﻴﻔﻬﻢ ﻣﻦ ﺑﻴﻦ‬ ‫أﻓﻀﻞ أﻧﻮاع اﻟﻘﻬﻮة ﻓﻲ اﻟﻌﺎﻟﻢ وﻃﻠﺐ ﻣﻨﻲ ﻫﻮ‬ ‫واﻟﻌﺪﻳﺪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﻮزﻋﻴﻦ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺘﺠﺎر ان أورد ﻟﻬﻢ‬ ‫اﻟﻘﻬﻮة اﻟﻴﻤﻨﻴﺔ‬ ‫ﻫﻞ ﻛﺎن ذﻟﻚ ﺑﻤﺜﺎﺑﺔ اﺧﺘﺒﺎر ﻟﺠﻮدة ﻓﻜﺮﺗﻚ وﻣﺪى‬ ‫ﻗﺒﻮﻟﻬﺎ؟‬ ‫ﻧﻌﻢ ﺗﺄﻛﺪت ﺑﺄن ﻫﺬا اﻟﺴﻮق ﻳﺤﻤﻞ اﻟﻌﺪﻳﺪ ﻣﻦ‬ ‫اﻟﻔﺮص‪ ،‬ﻟﺬﻟﻚ ﻗﺮرت اﻻﺳﺘﻤﺮار واﻟﻌﻮدة إﻟﻰ‬ ‫اﻟﻴﻤﻦ ﻓﻲ ﻋﺎم ‪ ٢٠١٥‬ﻟﺘﻮﻇﻴﻒ اﻟﻌﻤﺎل ﻓﻲ ﺷﺮﻛﺔ‬ ‫ﺑﻮرت اوف ﻣﻮﺧﺎ‬ ‫ﻣﺎﻫﻲ اﻟﺼﻌﻮﺑﺎت اﻟﺘﻲ واﺟﻬﺘﻬﺎ؟‬

‫ﻛﺎﻧﺖ ﻣﺠﺮد ﻟﻴﻠﺔ ﻣﺨﻴﻔﺔ ﻟﻠﻐﺎﻳﺔ وﻛﻨﺖ اﺗﺮﻗﺐ ﻣﻮﺗﻲ‬ ‫ﺑﺎي ﻟﺤﻈﺔ‪ ،‬اﺿﻄﺮرت إﻟﻰ إرﺳﺎل رﺳﺎﺋﻞ إﻟﻰ أﻣﻲ‬ ‫وأﺑﻲ دون ﻣﻌﺮﻓﺔ ﻣﺎ إذا ﻛﻨﺖ ﺳﺄﻋﻴﺶ ﻟﺮؤﻳﺔ‬ ‫اﻟﺼﺒﺎح‪ ،‬ﻛﺎن ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﺨﺮوج ﻣﻦ اﻟﻴﻤﻦ ﻟﻠﻮﺻﻮل اﻟﻰ‬ ‫اﻟﻤﺆﺗﻤﺮ اﻟﺬي ﻛﺎن ﺳﻴﻌﻘﺪ ﻓﻲ ﺳﺎن ﻓﺮاﻧﺴﻴﺴﻜﻮ‬

‫ﺑﻌﺪ رﺣﻠﺔ اﺳﺘﻐﺮﻗﺖ ﺳﺒﻊ ﺳﺎﻋﺎت ﺗﺤﺖ اﻟﻘﺼﻒ‬ ‫اﻟﻤﺪوي إﻟﻰ ﻣﻴﻨﺎء اﻟﻤﺨﺎ‪ ،‬ﻋﺮض ﻋﻠﻲ ﺷﺨﺺ‬ ‫ﻧﻘﻠﻲ ﻋﺒﺮ اﻟﺒﺤﺮ اﻷﺣﻤﺮ ﻓﻲ ﻗﺎرب ﺻﻐﻴﺮ ﻣﻦ‬ ‫اﻷﻟﻴﺎف اﻟﺰﺟﺎﺟﻴﺔ‪ ،‬و ﺷﻌﺮت ﻓﻲ ذﻟﻚ اﻟﻮﻗﺖ‬ ‫ﺑﺎﻟﻼﺟﺌﻴﻦ اﻟﺬﻳﻦ ﻟﻢ ﻳﻜﻦ ﻟﺪﻳﻬﻢ أي ﺧﻴﺎر ﺳﻮى‬ ‫اﻟﻤﻮت ﻓﻲ اﻷرض او اﻟﻤﻮت ﻓﻲ اﻟﺒﺤﺮ ‪ ،‬ﻻ‬ ‫ﻳﻤﻜﻨﻨﻲ وﺻﻒ اﻟﺤﺎﻟﺔ اﻹﻧﺴﺎﻧﻴﺔ اﻟﺴﻴﺌﺔ اﻟﺘﻲ ﻛﺎن‬ ‫ﻳﻤﺮ ﺑﻪ اﻟﻴﻤﻦ واﻃﻔﺎﻟﻪ وﻧﺴﺎﺋﻪ ﺣﺘﻲ اﻧﻨﻲ ﻻ‬ ‫ﻳﻤﻜﻨﻨﻲ اﻟﺤﺪﻳﺚ ﻋﻦ ﺣﺠﻢ اﻟﻤﺄﺳﺎة ‪ ،‬اﻧﻬﺎ ﻛﺒﻴﺮة‬ ‫ﻟﻘﺪ اﺳﺘﻘﻠﺖ ﻫﺬا اﻟﻘﺎرب اﻟﻰ ﺟﻴﺒﻮﺗﻲ وﻛﺎن ذﻟﻚ‬ ‫ﺑﻤﺜﺎﺑﺔ ﻗﻔﺰة ﻛﺒﻴﺮة ﻓﻲ ﺣﻴﺎﺗﻲ‪ .‬وﺑﺎﻟﻨﻈﺮ إﻟﻰ اﻟﻮراء‬ ‫ﺣﻘﺎ وﻟﻜﻦ ﻛﺎن ﻋﻠﻲ اﻟﻨﺠﺎة ﻣﻦ‬ ‫ﻏﺒﻴﺎ ً‬ ‫ﻛﺎن اﻷﻣﺮ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اﻟﻮﺿﻊ اﻟﻤﺄﺳﺎوي ﻓﻲ اﻟﻴﻤﻦ‬ ‫ﻫﻲ ﻗﺼﺔ ﻧﺠﺎة أم رﺣﻠﺔ ﻣﺒﺎدر؟‬ ‫اﻟﻘﺼﺔ ﺑﺪأت ﺑﻌﺪ ﻧﺠﺎﺗﻲ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﻮت ﺑﺄﻋﺠﻮﺑﺔ‪،‬‬ ‫وﺣﻴﻦ ﺗﻤﻜﻨﺖ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻮﺻﻮل اﻟﻰ ﻣﺆﺗﻤﺮ ﺳﺎن‬ ‫ﻓﺮاﻧﺴﻴﺴﻜﻮ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻮﻗﺖ اﻟﻤﻨﺎﺳﺐ ﺣﻴﺚ اﺧﺬت‬ ‫اﻟﻘﺼﺔ اﺑﻌﺎدا أﺧﺮى ﻟﻢ اﻓﻬﻤﻬﺎ‪ .‬اﻧﻬﺎ رﺣﻠﺔ اﻟﻮﻋﻲ‬ ‫ﺑﺄﻫﻤﻴﺔ اﻟﺘﻐﻴﻴﺮ ودﻋﻢ ﺗﻠﻚ اﻟﻤﺸﺎرﻳﻊ ذات اﻻﺛﺮ‬ ‫اﻟﻤﺴﺘﺪام‬ ‫ﻛﻤﻴﺔ اﻟﺴﻌﺎدة واﻟﻔﺨﺮ ﺑﻌﻴﻮن اﻟﻤﺰارﻋﻴﻦ ﺣﻴﻦ ﻋﻠﻤﻮا‬ ‫ﺑﺄن ذﻟﻚ اﻟﻤﺤﺼﻮل اﻟﺬي أﻧﺘﺞ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻴﻤﻦ ﻳﻌﺪ ﻣﻦ‬ ‫أﺟﻮد اﻷﻧﻮاع وأﺛﻤﻨﻬﺎ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻌﺎﻟﻢ‪ ،‬ﻟﻜﻲ أن ﺗﺘﺨﻴﻠﻲ‬ ‫اﻟﻔﺮق ﻋﻨﺪﻣﺎ ﻳﺮﺗﺒﻂ ﻫﺪف اﻟﻤﺸﺮوع ﺑﺎﺳﺘﺪاﻣﺔ‬ ‫ﺑﻴﺌﻴﺔ واﻗﺘﺼﺎدﻳﺔ وزراﻋﻴﺔ‬

‫ﺣﻴﺚ ﻳﻀﻢ أﻫﻢ اﻟﻤﺨﺘﺼﻴﻦ ﻓﻲ ﻋﺎﻟﻢ اﻻﻋﻤﺎل‬ ‫واﻟﻤﻮردﻳﻦ ﻓﻲ ﻣﺠﺎل اﻟﻘﻬﻮة‬ ‫ﻫﻞ ﻓﻜﺮت ﺑﺈﻧﻬﺎء ﻣﺸﺮوﻋﻚ ﻧﻈﺮا ﻟﺘﻠﻚ اﻟﻈﺮوف؟‬ ‫ﻧﻌﻢ ﻣﺌﺎت اﻟﻤﺮات وﻟﻜﻨﻲ وﻗﺘﻬﺎ ﻛﻨﺖ اﻓﻜﺮ ﻓﻘﻂ‬ ‫ﻓﻲ اﻟﻬﺮوب ﻣﻦ ﻣﻮت ﻣﺤﻘﻖ‪ ،‬ﻣﺎ ﺗﻼ ذﻟﻚ ﻛﺎن‬ ‫رﺣﻠﺔ ﻣﺤﻔﻮﻓﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﻤﺨﺎﻃﺮ ﻟﻠﺨﺮوج ﻣﻦ اﻟﻴﻤﻦ‪ ،‬ﻓﻘﺪ‬ ‫ﺗﻢ ﺳﺠﻨﻲ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻌﺎﺻﻤﺔ اﻟﻴﻤﻴﻨﺔ ﺑﻀﻌﺔ أﻳﺎم‬ ‫وﺧﺮﺟﺖ ﺑﻤﻌﺠﺰة‪ ،‬ﺣﻴﻨﻬﺎ ﻗﺮرت أن اﺗﺮك ﺧﻠﻔﻲ ﻛﻞ‬

Throughout your life, you’ve probably heard the same thing, over and over again from your parents, teachers, even from your friends…

That it’s simply not possible to live your passions and succeed in life at the same time. That the only way to succeed is to find a job, career or profession that seems “safe.” Or to make it in life, you need to work hard to take care of your responsibilities. And only if you’re lucky, you’d get wealthy along the way. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, in my opinion, the only way to succeed and become wealthy is to follow your passions, and use them to live out your life’s real purpose. Look deep inside yourself and think about what you’re doing with your life right now. Are you happy with what you’re doing? Does your job, business, or career leave you feeling fulfilled at the end of each day? If not, it’s probably because whatever you’re doing isn’t a good fit for you as a person. It’s like wearing a shoe that’s two sizes too small for you, for 8-10 hours every day of your life. That wouldn’t be very fun or worthwhile, would it? But that’s exactly what most people do in their existing day jobs, careers, or businesses. And I think that’s tragic. That’s why in today’s post I’m going to debunk the 5 most common myths to help you ignore the B.S. that you’ve been taught your whole life about doing what you love — and getting rich as a result — so you can live ISSUE NO. 8

MYTH 1 — “You need to find your passion by actively searching for it.” This is one of the biggest myths I hear from my students, and it just isn’t true! There is no one out there who can tell you what your passions are and how to live a life that fulfills you. You already have a passion, even if you don’t know it. For me, it was health and fitness. Once I realized I wanted to help people live better, more energetic lives, everything else came into focus. But for you, it might be something different. In fact, it could be almost anything: an industry that you feel drawn to, an interest that you keep coming back to again and again, or even a cause that you care about. Your passion isn’t something you can find outside of yourself.

TRUTH — Your passion is something you already know, deep down, maybe without even realizing it.

This just means that you need to identify your other passions and look for the opportunities and sub-passions they present.

You need to look inward and find out what already excites you and drives you in your daily life.

MYTH 3 — “You can only have one passion, and you need to stick to it no matter what.”

You just need to know how to pull it out. Don’t know what your passion in life is?

Most people think there’s only one overarching passion you can have in life.

Not only is that wrong, but just imagine if we applied that kind of thinking in other areas of life – would you ever tell someone that just because they liked chocolate ice cream, they could never have any other desserts ever again? Of course not!

MYTH 2 — “Passions are hobbies, not businesses.”

Most of us grew up being told that if you couldn’t get a degree in an “interest” or hobby, it won’t make you successful. Maybe in the past, this “conventional wisdom” worked for some people — but many people just ended up stuck in jobs, careers, and businesses they couldn’t stand! Sound familiar? Today, we now have the best opportunity ever to create wealth doing what we love… partially because of this great little thing called the internet. TRUTH — Passions can be easily turned into businesses by monetizing them within niche communities via the internet.

There are so many websites and online businesses out there that simply couldn’t have existed a decade ago. And that’s because the internet makes it easy to find niche communities and monetize the interests you already care about. Just keep in mind though, that not every passion can be monetized — some interests you have may be too specialized or don’t have enough demand.

Instead, life is more like a dessert tray: You have a variety of passions you can pick and choose from, some of which might be related to others you already know you have an interest in. A lot of the broad passions people have can also have “sub-passions” hidden within them, leaving you with an abundance of opportunity. One good example is an interest in health and wellness. Within that niche, you have fitness, nutrition, supplements, and so many other sub-categories. So if you find that it isn’t serving you, you don’t have to give up on your dreams. You just need to regroup, shift focus, and move on to your next passion. TRUTH — You can have many passions. If your passion isn’t serving you, just shift your focus and move on to your next passion.

So in those cases, we recommend finding people who have done what you intend to do. Find out if they have been successful so you can see if your interests can make you wealthy. And if they were successful, model what they did. If you’re not sure your passion is one that can make good money, don’t fret. This doesn’t mean that you should lose all hope of ever being successful.

MYTH 4 — “If you’re living your passion and purpose, you never have to work a day in your life!” Just because you’re doing something you care about and love doing, doesn’t mean running a business is easy! In fact, just getting started can take an enormous amount of time and energy. There are so many tasks you’ll run into every day you’re in business, and a lot of them aren’t going to be things that you love to do. So to say that you’ll never have bad days, or work will never ever feel like work again is a stretch.

Bottomline: nothing ever happens without action being taken in the real world. TRUTH — Once you find your passion, success will only come when you take real action in the real world. So even though you found your passion, it doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to make money with it.BUT… you are on the right track. Once you know what your passion is, you can take it and create a mission for yourself, and craft a step-by-step plan on how to create your vision in the real world and build toward the success you want to see. Good or good? So what should you do if you’re not living your passion and purpose… but want to?

If you’re not living with the passion and purpose you want in life, you probably fall into one of three categories:

If you’re motivated toward your goals and doing something you find meaningful and fulfilling, it’s so much easier to push yourself through the tasks you might find boring or even uncomfortable.

• You don’t know your passion or purpose and you’re having trouble figuring it out.

And that’s like any other area in life. You’ll have your ups and downs in any business. However, if you start your business the right way, you can minimize the number of activities you have to do that aren’t aligned with what you really, truly love doing. You won’t be just going through the motions, day in and day out, working a job that you dread — which will result in more money, happiness, fulfillment, and motivation each day!

• You think you know your passion or purpose, but you aren’t completely sure you’re on the right track. • You’ve already found your passion or purpose, but now you haven’t been able to make good money with it. If any of those statements apply to you, then good news…

MYTH 5 — “Once you find your passion, success will soon follow.” Finding your passion doesn’t mean that you can simply sit back and watch success and money flow in. It’s similar to the “law of attraction” that everyone seems to misunderstand. Just because you want something or think about it often, doesn’t mean opportunities will magically come to your doorstep.

‫وﺣﺎول رﻳﺪ ﺗﺴﻬﻴﻞ اﻷﻣﻮر ﺑﺘﻘﻠﻴﻞ اﻷﺳﻌﺎر وﺗﻮﻓﻴﺮ‬ ‫ﺗﺸﻜﻴﻠﺔ ﻛﺒﻴﺮة ﻣﻦ اﻷﻓﻼم اﻟﺮاﺋﺠﺔ وﺑﺄﺳﻌﺎر أﻗﻞ‬ ‫ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺘﺎﺟﺮ‪ ،‬ﻟﻴﺠﺬب اﻟﻌﻤﻼء‪ ،‬ﻟﻜﻦ اﻷﻣﻮر ﻟﻢ ﺗﺴﺮ‬ ‫ﻛﻤﺎ ﻳﺮﻏﺐ‪ ،‬واﻟﻤﺒﻴﻌﺎت ﻟﻢ ﺗﺼﻞ إﻟﻰ ﻃﻤﻮﺣﻪ‬ ‫وﺗﻮﻗﻌﺎﺗﻪ ﺑﻞ ﻛﺎﻧﺖ ﺳﻴﺌﺔ وﻏﻴﺮ ﻣﺸﺠﻌﺔ‬ ‫رﻏﻢ ﻫﺬه اﻟﻈﺮوف ﻟﻢ ﻳﺘﺮاﺟﻊ ﻋﻦ إﻛﻤﺎل ﻣﺸﺮوﻋﻪ‪،‬‬ ‫وﺣﺎول "رﻳﺪ" ﺗﺤﻠﻴﻞ اﻟﺴﻮق واﻟﺘﻐﻠﺐ ﻋﻠﻰ‬ ‫اﻟﻤﻌﻮﻗﺎت‪ ،‬وﺑﺎﻟﻔﻌﻞ وﺟﺪ إﺳﺘﺮاﺗﻴﺠﻴﺔ ﻣﺜﺎﻟﻴﺔ‪،‬‬ ‫ﻛﺎﻧﺖ ﻓﻲ وﻗﺘﻬﺎ ﻣﺠﺮد ﺣﻞ ﻟﻤﺸﻜﻠﺔ رﻳﺪ‪ ،‬ﻟﻜﻨﻬﺎ‬ ‫ﻏﻴﺮت ﺷﻜﻞ ﺑﺚ اﻟﻤﺤﺘﻮى اﻟﺘﺮﻓﻴﻬﻲ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻌﺎﻟﻢ‪،‬‬ ‫ﺣﻴﺚ ﻗﺮر رﻳﺪ ﺗﻘﺪﻳﻢ ﺧﺪﻣﺔ ﻣﺸﺎﻫﺪة اﻷﻓﻼم ﻋﺒﺮ‬ ‫اﻹﻧﺘﺮﻧﺖ ﺑﺎﺷﺘﺮاك ﺷﻬﺮي‪ ،‬ﻣﻊ ﺗﺠﺮﺑﺔ ﻣﺠﺎﻧﻴﺔ‬ ‫ﻟﻠﺸﻬﺮ اﻷول‪ ،‬وﻛﺎﻧﺖ اﻟﻨﺘﻴﺠﺔ ﻣﺒﻬﺮة ﺑﻜﻞ‬ ‫اﻟﻤﻘﺎﻳﻴﺲ‪ ،‬ﻷن ﺣﻮاﻟﻲ ‪ ٪٨٠‬ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺸﺘﺮﻛﻴﻦ‬ ‫‪.‬ﺟﺪدوا اﺷﺘﺮاﻛﺎﺗﻬﻢ ﺑﻌﺪ أول ﺷﻬﺮ‬ ‫‪ISSUE NO. 8‬‬

‫ﻗﺒﻞ اﻟﺒﺪء ﻓﻲ ﺗﺄﺳﻴﺲ ﻣﺸﺮوﻋﻚ‪ ،‬ﻳﻜﻮن ﻟﺪﻳﻚ‬ ‫ﻓﺮﺻﺔ ﻟﻠﺘﺮاﺟﻊ‪ ،‬أو إﻋﺎدة دراﺳﺔ اﻟﺴﻮق ﻟﻠﺒﺤﺚ ﻋﻦ‬ ‫ﻓﻜﺮة أﺧﺮى ﺗﺴﺘﻄﻴﻊ اﻟﻌﻤﻞ ﻋﻠﻴﻬﺎ‪ ،‬وﺗﻄﻮﻳﺮﻫﺎ‪ ،‬ﻟﻜﻦ‬ ‫ﻓﻌﻠﻴﺎ ﻓﻲ ﺷﺮﻛﺘﻚ‬ ‫ﺑﻌﺪ اﻟﺘﺄﺳﻴﺲ واﻟﺸﺮوع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اﻟﻨﺎﺷﺌﺔ‪ ،‬ﺗﺒﺪو اﻷﻣﻮر أﻛﺜﺮ ﺻﻌﻮﺑﺔ إذا واﺟﻬﺘﻚ‬ ‫ﻋﻮاﺋﻖ وﺻﻌﻮﺑﺎت ﺗﻘﻒ أﻣﺎﻣﻚ أو ﺗﺮاﻛﻤﺖ ﻋﻠﻴﻚ‬ ‫اﻟﻤﺴﺘﺤﻘﺎت اﻟﻤﺎدﻳﺔ ﻣﻤﺎ ﻳﺆدي ﻟﺘﻌﺜﺮ اﻟﻤﺸﺮوع‬ ‫ﺑﺎﻟﻜﺎﻣﻞ‬

‫ﻟﻜﻦ اﻷﻣﻮر ﻟﻢ ﺗﺴﺘﻘﺮ ﺑﻌﺪ‪ ،‬ﺣﻴﺚ ﻇﻠﺖ اﻟﻌﻘﺒﺎت‬ ‫ﺗﻼﺣﻖ رﻳﺪ ﻷن ﻣﺸﺎﻫﺪة اﻷﻓﻼم ﻋﺒﺮ اﻟﺸﺒﻜﺔ‬ ‫اﻟﻌﻨﻜﺒﻮﺗﻴﺔ ﺗﺤﺘﺎج ﻟﻤﺴﺎﺣﺎت ﺿﺨﻤﺔ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺳﻴﺮﻓﺮ‬ ‫ﻣﺴﺘﻘﺮ‪ ،‬وﻛﺎن ذﻟﻚ ﻓﻲ ذﻟﻚ اﻟﻮﻗﺖ ﻧﺎدر اﻟﺤﺪوث‬ ‫وﺑﺄﺳﻌﺎر ﺑﺎﻫﻈﺔ‪ ،‬إﻟﻰ ﺟﺎﻧﺐ ﺣﻘﻮق اﻟﻤﻠﻜﻴﺔ‬ ‫اﻟﻔﻜﺮﻳﺔ ﻟﻠﺸﺮﻛﺎت اﻟﻤﻨﺘﺠﺔ ﻟﻬﺬه اﻷﻋﻤﺎل اﻟﺘﻲ‬ ‫‪.‬ﻳﺒﺜﻬﺎ ﻋﺒﺮ اﻹﻧﺘﺮﻧﺖ‬ ‫ﺑﺤﺚ رﻳﺪ ﻋﻦ ﺷﺮﻳﻚ ﻟﻠﺘﻤﻮﻳﻞ وﺑﺎﻟﻔﻌﻞ ﺗﻠﻘﻰ‬ ‫اﻟﺪﻋﻢ ﻣﻦ أﺣﺪ اﻟﻤﺴﺘﺜﻤﺮﻳﻦ‪ ،‬وﺣﻞ ﻣﺸﺎﻛﻞ‬ ‫ﻧﺘﻔﻠﻴﻜﺲ ﻣﻊ ﺷﺮﻛﺎت اﻹﻧﺘﺎج واﺳﺘﺌﺠﺎر‬ ‫اﻟﺴﻴﺮﻓﺮات‪ ،‬ووﺻﻞ ﻋﺪد اﻟﻤﺸﺘﺮﻛﻴﻦ إﻟﻰ ‪١٤‬‬ ‫ﻣﻠﻴﻮن ﻣﺸﺘﺮك ﻓﻲ ‪ ،٢٠١٠‬وﺣﻘﻖ رﻳﺪ ﻣﺒﻴﻌﺎت‬ ‫ﺗﻘﺪر ﺑﻤﻼﻳﻴﻦ اﻟﺪوﻻرات‪ ،‬ﻟﻜﻦ ﻟﻢ ﻳﺮﻏﺐ رﻳﺪ ﻓﻲ‬ ‫أن ﻳﻜﻮن ﻣﺸﺮوﻋﻪ ﻣﺠﺮد ﺷﺮﻛﺔ ﻟﺒﺚ اﻟﻤﺤﺘﻮى اﻟﺬي‬ ‫ﺗﺘﺤﻜﻢ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻣﺆﺳﺴﺎت اﻹﻧﺘﺎج‪ ،‬ﻓﺎﻗﺘﺤﻤﺖ‬ ‫ﻧﺘﻔﻠﻴﻜﺲ ﻋﺎﻟﻢ ﺻﻨﺎﻋﺔ اﻟﻤﺤﺘﻮى ﻋﺎم ‪ ،٢٠١١‬وﻛﺎﻧﺖ‬ ‫اﻟﺒﺪاﻳﺔ ﻣﻊ ﻣﺴﻠﺴﻞ ‪House of Cards‬‬
