n the last couple of catalogs, I have talked about all the changes that have occurred at Star® Roses and Plants over the last few years. Some have been very challenging, and some have made us a better company. A major change you will notice is that we have decided to print separate catalogs for our rose and woody offerings to help you focus on each category.

Another one of our most popular brands that continues to gain momentum is The Drift® series, which has sold over 10 million units in the last five years. These breakthrough, groundcover roses are perfectly sized, easily maintained and beautifully colored. Both of these successful brands, as well as others we have in our portfolio, make us extremely proud of our past, but we are even more excited about what’s to come.

As we look to the future, we know that consumers have changed and may be looking for something different than the consumer of twenty years ago. Just as The Knock Out® Family changed the way a generation purchased roses then, we feel that we have two new products that will change the way consumers purchase roses today and in the future.

The second is a product so unique that only the consumers’ thoughts will limit how it can be used. I am very excited to introduce Petite Knock Out®. For years I've been hearing, “If only we had a dwarf Knock Out®.” Well, now you do, but this variety is so much more than that. Growing to 1½’ wide by 1½’ tall with beautiful, glossy, dark foliage, and long-lasting blooms, it can be used as a focal point, as a hedge, in mixed containers, in mass landscape plantings, in window boxes, and more. I even believe it will become the best-selling tree rose of all time! We’ve brought to you the fantastic disease resistance you expect from a Knock Out® Rose, but in a smaller, innovative package.

After talking about these changes and new products, I must note what will remain unchanged. Our long time General Manager of our California facility, Bill Mann, reached retirement this past December and will be moving on to whatever retired people do these days. lmost 30 years ago, on may 5th, 1992, we received a seedling from a new hybridizer that was breeding landscape roses in his backyard and basement. Will Radler was the

curator of the Boerner Botanic Garden in Milwaukee at the time, and he had been breeding roses since he was a child. His goal was to create varieties that would be resistant to black spot, as well as bloom all season long. In the early 1990’s, after more than fifteen years of crossing and backcrossing, he felt he finally had something, so he sent the code to the main rose companies. However, because they were based in California where black spot pressure was minimal, they did not see the value of this new variety and rejected it.
