Isabella Elizondo attended the 2024- Summer STEAM 6th graders 2025 TASC State Steering Retreat created 3D cell models For three days, District 16 Student Council President Isabella Elizondo attended the 2024-2025 TASC State Steering Retreat. Throughout the duration of this retreat Isabella and her advisor Ms. Rebeca Garcia were able to interact with students and advisors from districts all around Texas. Multiple workshops were held that taught the students about business etiquette, cooperation, and recognizing issues that society faces as a whole.

Isabella’s takeaway from this experience was being given the opportunity to not only hear different perspectives, but learn how to understand and find comfort with knowing that we as a high school council are

Liebman Takes Reins as New Pastor of First Baptist-RGC Gladiator Gael Guerra Earns 1st Place in

By Kenneth Roberts, Freelance Writer Martin “Marty” Liebman, who officially became the new pastor of First Baptist Church in Rio Grande City on May 19, emphasizes that he is tremendously excited to serve the church and community in the coming years and proclaim the Christian message within the church body and in the community at large.

Liebman stressed, “I and my family are happy because we’re where God wants us to be. I’m really excited to be here; I’m eager to share the Word of God with the church and the community. I want to faithfully preach the Word, and faithfully love and shepherd the church and community,” stated the new pastor.

He noted that “we have lived in Little River-Academy since 2010.” Little River-Academy is a small combined municipality in Bell County located within 10 miles of Temple and Belton. In

recent years, Liebman and his wife Amanda have been members of First Baptist Church of Academy. He emphasized, “I am eternally grateful to the Lord and to that church for what it and its people did to strengthen me spiritually. Ultimately, it’s God

who’s strengthened and blessed me spiritually.” “My pastor at First Baptist of Academy (Brent Boatwright) has been a tremendous mentor for me over the past three years,” recalled Liebman.

Liebman and his wife Amanda have been married since 2007.

They have one six-year-old daughter, Laura, and one fouryear-old son, Riker. Liebman pointed out that “I met my wife online in 2005 when I was attending TCU and she was teaching in Mineral Wells.”

Liebman indicated that his wife has been the lone librarian for the Academy ISD in recent years.

He commented, “She is an avid reader; she loves library work and has 14 years of experience as a school librarian.”

Liebman was ordained for the gospel ministry on April 21 at First Church of Academy. He noted that he “taught Sunday School and helped teach on Wednesday nights and helped lead a men’s disciple-making class.” Essential in his spiritual growth, stressed the new pastor, was his starting online seminary classes with Liberty University in 2021.

Liebman indicated, “I was born in Winfield, Illinois and we moved to Pennsylvania before I was old enough to remember anything.

I grew up in Youngwood, just southeast of Pittsburgh. I attended Christian schools growing up, and that created an awareness in me of who God is and who I needed to be. I felt God leading me to Texas in the early 2000’s, attended TCU (in Fort Worth), and graduated from TCU with a degree in Political Science,” declared the new pastor.

Liebman insisted that his foremost priority or “driving force” as a pastor “is to teach people to give Jesus first place

in their lives…I want this to be a vital and strong church, but I want people to come to saving faith in Christ…My first priority is to glorify God and advance His kingdom.” Liebman indicated that his four favorite Bible verses are Matthew 6:19-21, Romans 12:1-2, Proverbs 3:5-6, and Hebrews 4:12.

“God has changed me to fit His purposes,” he stressed. “I wouldn’t have pictured myself in the pastorate even 10 years ago.”

Liebman recalled that for several years in the 2000’s and 2010’s, “I did movie reviews for an online

international website. It involved picture (film) critique and critique of audio-visual quality. It was involved and detailed work.

Christian movies are a lot better produced than in the past.”

One of his leading non-church interests, said Liebman, is that “I’m a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates (baseball) fan.”

Liebman stresses his confidence that God has led him and his family to First Baptist Church of Rio Grande City. He says he looks forward to a long and fruitful period of ministry and service in Starr County.

We had 118 graduates, for us, it was the greatest and grandest class to ever graduate from Rio, bar none! LOL. All of us will turn 80 or more before this years end. Thanks to the great efforts of our class president Javier D. Margo, his wife Bitsy, Esther P. Gutierrez and a few others who helped to gather phone numbers and addresses. We met at the historic Texas Café on Saturday July 6, 2024 at 1:00 pm to enjoy a delicious meal and much reminiscing. We had about 38 people attending, including 22 graduates and their spouses, and a few guests. There were several who told us that they couldn’t attend for health reasons.

We began the program by asking Benito Saenz, Jr. to lead us in prayer to our Lord for all the blessings HE has given us. We also remembered the 44 members of our Class of ’62 who have since entered Eternal Rest. Many of us had not seen

some classmates since our graduation. The meal consisted of a choice of the famous “Chicken Fried Steak, Envueltos or Grilled Chicken. Each meal was served with a side salad, soup and a serving of Apple Pie a la mode. The food was excellent and so was the ambience. A heartfelt Thank You to Becky Garza and her excellent staff from the Texas Cafe. We applaud all your great efforts to help us celebrate our reunion.

We reminisced and joked about our experiences while at Rio High (the ones we could remember or made up!). We shared with each other what we have been up to since we graduated. We bragged about our kids and grandkids and great-grandkids and ggg… We had a great time going down “memory lane.”

Many pointed out the treasured events from Sports, Band and Clubs. Possibly the most memorable was the fact that this Powerful Rattler Team handed the Donna Redskins their only loss

of their season with a score of 20-0. A mystery remains and, we still want to know who tagged the Water Tower on east main street with Srs ‘62. The water tank is no longer there.

Each classmate in attendance was gifted a carved wooden magnet made by Esther Gutierrez. They also received a memory prayer card and teardrop token with a cardinal and a quote “I am always with you.” All were informed that monthly mass intentions at Immaculate Conception Church have been made for the last 3 years for the Class of 1962. A 12” x 12” paver has been donated and placed at the patio of the Kelsey Bass Museum.

Looks like some members want the “party” to continue. Plans are for the Class of ’62 to attend a Rattler football game this coming football season and beyond! G.o.o.o.o. Rattlers!
