Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, was sworn-in for a new term representing Senatorial District 21, which includes all or part of 16 counties, marking the official start of the 88th Texas Legislative Session. Constituents and family members participated in the Opening Day Ceremonies.

Senator Zaffirini has pre-filed 56 bills for the 2023 session, including measures that would allow power companies to connect to the national grid; provide a one-time, 10 percent cost of living adjustment with annual increases based on inflation for retired teachers and

expand Medicaid services to persons earning at or below 138 percent of the federal poverty level (approximately $38,295 annually or $3,191.25 monthly for a family of four).

“My staff and I will continue to work with constituents, stakeholders, and my legislative colleagues during the next 140 days to pass legislation providing quality educational opportunities for our children, investing in infrastructure and transportation, creating jobs and strengthening the economy, conserving our environment, ensuring more

Senator Zaffirini said.

First elected in 1986, the senator has received more than 1,000 awards and honors for her legislative, public service, and professional work. She is known for her 100 percent voting record in the Texas Senate, where she has cast 67,923 consecutive votes. In the 2021 Republicandominated Texas Legislature, she passed more bills than any other legislator for the fourth consecutive session, a total of 106.

During the 88th Legislative Session, lawmakers will debate pressing issues that impact all Texans such as property tax relief, electric grid reliability and border security. Residents of Senate District 21 can count on Senator Zaffirini to continue to champion their needs and interests during these discussions.

Lucia E. La Grange passed away on January 10, 2023, at the age of 67. She was born on November 26, 1955, in Rio Grande City, TX to Arcadio Salinas Sr. and Aurora Saenz Salinas from La Grulla, Tx. She is preceded in death by both her parents and her brother Arcadio Jesus Salinas Jr. Lucia is survived by her brother Constancio Salinas and Sistersin-Law Ruth Piper Salinas Arcadio Jesus Salinas Jr.(†) and Santitos Escobar Salinas (Constancio Salinas) & her nephew Arcadio Jesus Salinas III (Claudia I. Salinas) and nieces Melissa Linda Salinas, Idani S. Salinas (Javier H. Canales), Julissa A. Salinas (Constantino Oropeza), and Constance A. Garza (Esequiel Garza Jr.). Lucia received her elementary and middle school education in La Grulla TX as a proud Grulla Crane at heart & received her high school diploma from Rio Grande City High School the Home of the Mighty Rattlers. She graduated from The University of Texas Pan American with her bachelor’s degree in education.

She serviced and taught students for over 46 years at PSJA ISD and RGCGISD with her strong background in English. She finished her educational career as a RGCGISD Dyslexia Ringgold Middle School Teacher. Lucia was a beloved resident of Rio Grande City, TX. Her passion to teach her students alongside her colleagues was always her priority and love!

Daughter to Arcadio Salinas Sr. a very successful farmer, rancher, businessman and Aurora Saenz Salinas a committed housewife and businesswoman from La Grulla TX., Lucia was raised with deep-rooted morals, ethics, and religious faith instilled forever in her life. There is no doubt that many of you have been touched with her profound and inspiring attributes of good faith. As a daddy’s girl she followed her father’s footsteps in agriculture and harvesting on Salinas’ Farms. Her generosity and heartfelt words of profound wisdom will be scripted in the hearts of her loved ones and will forever transpire in the hearts of all the individuals she has touched. Lucia made a difference and paved the way in so many lives. There is no doubt that all of us have fond memories of our beloved Lucia. Her guidance, scripted

words and phrases will forever resonate as she is remembered as “Our QUEEN” the most beautiful and beloved Queen that will forever be our pride and joy. She instilled love, strength, intelligence, and an excellent work ethic to fulfill everyone’s desires always in the name of OUR LORD and SAVIOR Jesus Christ. Her commitment to the power of prayer for her family, the community and all mankind will continue to be celebrated from the heavens above. Let us never forget our Sister, Aunt, Teacher, Best Friend, Professional and the most generous loving SOUL and Guardian Angel. Staying Healthy this Flu Season 7 Annual Starr County Youth Fair Academic Rodeo th

While the number of reported cases of flu may be receding, Texas is still highlighted on the CDC’s website (as of December 30th) for experiencing a very high rate of influenza-like illnesses. One simple action folks can take now to stay healthy in the New Year is to get a flu shot.

This is important as the flu can last through the cold months and into late spring (even as late as May).

Here are a few CDC Recommendations for the Public: • Take time to get a flu vaccine.

• Take everyday preventive actions to reduce the spread of respiratory illness like flu. These include staying home when sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and washing your hands often.

• You can also consider wearing

a high-quality, well-fitting mask which may help reduce the spread of respiratory viruses. o This might be especially useful in certain circumstances, for example, in household settings when someone is sick or in crowded community settings for people at higher risk when respiratory disease activity is high.

• Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.

• CDC recommends prompt treatment with a prescription flu antiviral drug for: People who are hospitalized with flu or suspected flu (empiric treatment as soon as possible).

Also worth noting, the CDC indicates that: • People who have tested positive for flu are at higher risk of serious flu complications.

Higher risk, flu-positive patients should be treated quickly with flu antiviral drugs regardless of their vaccination status.

• CDC recommends that people at higher risk of developing serious flu complications get antiviral treatment as early as possible because benefit is greatest if treatment is started within 2 days after illness onset.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, getting a flu shot is particularly important for pregnant women, elderly adults (65 years of age and older), small children (6 months to 5 years), and people with chronic health conditions. Tip for this elderly: this season, seniors over 65 are encouraged to get an enhanced shot.
