Master gardener shares her favorite blooms BY ELLARRY PRENTICE STAFF WRITER ST. CLOUD – The name perennial translates to “through the years.” For gardeners who want blooms to return year after year, perennials are a go-to. And for gardeners who want blooms that can be kissed by the sun, Jean Januschka Ebnet has some recommendations. Januschka Ebnet is a University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener who shared her favorite sun-loving perennials at the University of Minnesota Extension Gardening Knowledge event Feb. 12 in St. Cloud. Her presentation featured photos from hers and other master gardeners’ gardens. When selecting perennials that grow in sunlight, Januschka Ebnet said it is important to note the description full sun implies six or more hours of direct

you are looking at your garden in the early spring, it may not be a true reflection of how much sun you get in the summer,” she said. Perennials generally live two or more years. Some perennials, such as peonies, last many years, while others, such as tulips, are short-lived. Januschka Ebnet said the lifespan of a perennial is also dependent on the cold hardiness zone in which it is planted.

Watab prepares for road projects Pothole repair also on township’s spring to-do list BY ELLARRY PRENTICE STAFF WRITER SAUK RAPIDS – Watab Township is gearing up for multiple road reconstruction projects. Three of the reconstruction projects, estimated to cost about $750,000, are set to occur on Sucker Creek Road, Sharon Place and Indian Road. The total cost with engineering fees and the township’s share of a co-occurring project to rebuild Sucker Creek Bridge is estimated to be about $900,000. The township will advertise for bids for these projects, and the scope of the work will be reviewed at a public

informational meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 at Watab Town Hall, 660 75th St. NW, Sauk Rapids. Bids will be opened in the latter part of April. The township has issued a $3.395 million bond to fund these and other needed road projects over the next five years. From 2023-26, road projects will also take place on West Lake Road, West Lake Court, Sues Road Northwest, Lakewood Shores Road Northwest, Shoestring Loop Northwest, Sanbur Trail Northwest, 15th Avenue Northwest, Burton Place Northwest, Ivy Place Northwest and Ferry Point Place Northwest. Road work will also take place in the

Lake Andrew housing development this year in conjunction with storm sewer and drainage improvements. Township engineer Kevin Kruger met with the Lake Andrew homeowners association and said residents approved of the plans. The streets in the Lake Andrew housing development were never accepted by Watab Township and therefore were never maintained by the local road authority. Lake Andrew residents will be responsible for all costs of improving the streets and storm sewer to bring them up to township standards. Watab will choose whether to accept the roads after the repairs.
