Lincoln Center, a homeless shelter about two miles from Sauk Rapids, has room for 19 people to sleep at night. But that is never enough. “We have to turn away four to eight people a night, which breaks my heart because they’re really desperate for a spot and it’s getting cold,” said shelter director Harry Fleegel. Fortunately, Lincoln Center has the resources to help 19 people every day. The shelter feeds homeless people sleeping there, on the street, in their car or elsewhere. Clothing and personal care items are also provided to those in need, along with home furnishings for people who have secured a place to live but have nothing to put in it, Fleegel said.

BENTON AG

A retired priest who lives in Sauk Rapids wants to bring peace, hope and love to people at a Benton County homeless shelter. “It is a great time to do something positive and make the world a happy place,” said the Rev. Tony Kroll, 87. Kroll has organized the Armistice Day Walkathon, set for 11 a.m.

Thursday, Nov. 11 – the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The walkathon will start at the shrine of Sister Adelaide Koetter in the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery in Freeport. Participants will walk six miles along the Lake Wobegon Trail, nishing at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.
