A beard of plenty Mescall devoted to facial follicles

by NATASHA BARBER STAFF WRITER

RICE — Dennis Mescall is quite ordinary. Mescall lives in a splitlevel house in the city of Rice with his wife Andrea, two sons, Preston, 8, and Jackson, 2, and dogs. Each workday morning, this Becker graduate wakes up and prepares to go to work as a quality inspector at Northern Metal Products in St. Cloud. He’s a normal family guy, making a living— except for his extraordinary beard. “It actually takes me longer to get ready in the morning than it does Andrea,” Mescall said, whose twoyears of beard growth had accumulated to about 14 inches long. “He gets up an hour before he needs to leave and it takes him the whole time. I get up 55 minutes before I have to go and feed and clothe two children, feed two dogs, bring them downstairs, do a load of laundry, do dishes and I’m still ready before him,” Andrea said. Mescall, who competes

in the full beard, freestyle category, is a two-time Facial Hair League (FHL) “Best in Show” Dangerous Man/ Minneapolis Beard and Mustache Club (MBMC) Winter Beard Contest winner and has competed online and across the country in over a dozen events over the last three years. He is sponsored by 2 Bits Man Men’s Grooming Products. The FHL was established to bring together American beard clubs into organized beard competitions dedicated to raising money for charity. There are multiple categories for beards of every stature and women and children are invited to participate in faux beard competitions as well. Facial hair has never been new to Mescall. In fact, it’s all he’s ever known. “Ever since I can remember, my dad has had a beard,” Mescall said. “I think the longest it ever got was almost down to his belly button. People even called him ZZ Top while I was growing up. So it’s definitely in the genes.” Mescall, himself, began cultivating his facial fields at a young age. He remembers the first facial hair sprouting

at the ripe age of thirteen. He quickly embraced the tiniest goatee (partly because of the looks of his metal-music idols) and since that time his face has only been barren once. “I was 14-years-old, about to turn 15 when I got a job at Subway in Becker. The owners made me shave my facial hair off, even though all I had was a little bit. After that initial shave, I grew my facial hair back and no one ever said anything. I had that job for about a year,” Mescall said. It took years before Mescall was passionate about his facial follicles. Through friends, and perhaps fate, Mescall became aware of the MBMC public Facebook group. He joined the group before the actual private club in doubt of its sincerity. “I didn’t think it was real,” Mescall said. “I was like, ‘yeah right, whatever, dudes hanging out and growing beards?’” But after attending his first competition at First Avenue in Minneapolis, Feb. 9, 2013, Mescall was instantly intrigued by the environment

and its members. “I was not prepared. The people were all dressed up, head-to-toe, in super nice suits and playing the part. They looked good — sharply dressed with gnarly beards. I was wearing a hoodie, jeans and hadn’t even styled my beard. Needless to say I didn’t place,” Mescall said. “But the founder of the club knew my name. I had never met the guy except for on a Facebook page and he came up and said, ‘hey you’re Dennis, right?’ After meeting him and hanging out with all the people, I knew I had to do it again.” The next competition, Mescall rented a Colonel Sanders suit, styled his beard and took second place in a partial beard competition. RICE – Todd John Poirer knows that if you work hard enough, ideas can turn into a reality. In 2014, Poirer established the John Poirer clothing line. The idea started in 2010 when he and a group of friends came up with the idea to make t-shirts with funny slogans on them and sell them online. “Like most ideas, it fizzled out the next day and life carried on as normal,” Poirer said. “But it never truly left my mind. I finally realized I needed to follow up on it.” After spending four years PHOTO BY NATASHA BARBER Granite City’s No. 12 Tanner Skaja celebrates after scoring a experiencing countless setshorthanded, unassisted goal March 11 against the Twin City backs on starting the line, Steel. as many days as possible in the summer, so it was an easy choice to do swimwear,” Poirer said. One of the decisions he had to make along the way was whether he wanted to have custom designed swimwear that would have a considerable cost to have produced by someone else or to use products from the manufacturer and sell those. “If I would’ve done all custom-designed swimwear, the size of my line would be greatly diminished, but I didn’t want my whole line to be products made by the manufacturer, so I settled for somewhere in between,” Poirer said. “I have a respectable sized line and still have some of my own custom designs involved.”

Perkins in the Pines closes

SAUK RAPIDS – When a business closes after 45 years, it’s bound to make an impact on the community. For many, Perkins in the Pines was a staple in Sauk Rapids, something that has been around as long as they can remember, so when Perkins closed its doors early last week, people noticed. “It’s going to seem odd not having the Perkins in the Pines,” said Todd Schultz, community development director for Sauk Rapids. “I grew up in this area and it’s been there almost my entire life, so it’ll be really odd.” Former Perkins employee Rob Schumann knows how important the restaurant was. “It meant a lot to the community,” Schumann said. Owner Dave Hanson has offered jobs to all of the Sauk Rapids employees at the other three area locations – Sartell, St. Cloud and Waite Park. “It was a very difficult

and the building to be up to current Perkins standards. We just couldn’t do that in the existing Sauk Rapids building.” Schultz feels that the closing was inevitable with the three factors playing together. “If it wasn’t for the road project, they may have stayed open a few more months, but it sounded like the writing was on the wall in terms of improvements they would have needed to make to the building and the cost of those improvements,” Schultz said. “It sounded like the road project was maybe the tipping point in their decision to close.” With only a handful of dining options in Sauk Rapids, the impact of the restaurant closing will be felt longterm. “We will be looking for another location in Sauk Rapids in the future,” Hanson said. “We want to have a presence here because we have for so long.”

The Sauk Rapids Herald

Choose to walk with the wise

I had an amazing dream last night. I ventured down to the Sauk Rapids Herald in the evening to dust off some of the old turn-of-the-century printing presses. There, in my dream, I found late Rollie Doroff. He was very much alive and beemingly happy. He said, “How are you, By Mercy Nygaard little girl?” Hugs, tears and then Life by Faith without wasting another minute, we were playing with the machines and stacking papers, chatting about life and how his family was doing. Stories of camping and attending family events were bountiful. Now I’m crying because it was only a dream. But those moments we spent together were priceless and worth every second. I am a bit sentimental today as I think of all the people in my family’s life who we are blessed with. What leads up to being surrounded by these blessed relationships? Some of it is cultural, socioeconomic or what family you are born into. But we’ve all heard a story or two of people who have beat their prospective odds. “... with God all things are possible,” Mathew 19:26. Choosing to be with wise people benefits us in lifechanging ways. Proverbs 13:20, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.” Snap! That should be enough to help us want to surround ourself with wise relationships. Pagan Ruth, clung to her mother-in-law who was a believer. Ruth was widowed and became substantially taken care of. And likewise, when Elisha trusted Elijah’s mentorship, Elisha went on to minister during the reigns of five different kings of Israel. There are 20 different miracles recorded in scripture by Elisha and even one after he was dead and buried - 2 Kings 13:20,21. Those stories that are indeed realities are to encourage us to want to surround ourself with wise relationships. When you get old enough, sometimes this means saying no to family when they are in a bad place while continuing in dedicated prayer. If it’s awful coworkers you are encircled by, kids at school or empty, self-God preaching professors, you better believe that God has some encouraging relationships lined up for you through a church or bible study. Through prayer, it is up to you to take action to seek them out and God will guide you. The inspiring story of Olympic gold medalist, Gabriel Douglas, is on Netflix. She was raised by a single mom struggling to make ends meet. She had tremendous faith in God and glorified Him through her acceleration in gymnastics, while seeking out mentorship which led her to Liang Chow. My parents were very encouraging of extracurricular activities, and although this should never be where your life pendulum is stuck at, it led me to coaches who became wonderful mentors. My softball coach, Mr. Kalvig, never held back my abilities but reprimanded my arrogance. He cared about what was happening in my life outside of softball and encouraged our team to strive for excellence in life. I regrettably made the decision to rebel during those years, but I very much enjoy keeping in touch with coach and friend, Kalvig. I’m thankful for his mentorship. Through surrender and prayer you can utilize sports or any endeavor to glorify God, and like Gabby Douglas, He may give you the opportunity to do it in front of the entire world. Now, I have even more mentorships, in-laws, friends and colleagues who love the Lord. They bless me and my family tremendously. My dream last night of friend and mentor Rollie, reminded me of the importance of relationships and the shortness of life. Who do you surround yourself with? We were designed to have Godly relationships. Lay aside your business and spend some quality time with them. It is an investment which will pay off for eternity.

Residents approved a donation of $500 to the Benton Agricultural Society to help with the annual Benton County Fair and $2000 to Rice Recreation to update safety equipment for sports and general use. The Benton County Economic Development organization created some disagreement among residents and board members present. Township Supervisor Craig Gondeck made a motion to donate $1,000 toward the organization. Supervisor

Liquor store upgrade Fish fries draw crowds approved for $100,000 by ANNA SALDANA STAFF WRITER

by NATASHA BARBER STAFF WRITER

SAUK RAPIDS — Without definitive answers on counter-top and cabinet pricing, the Sauk Rapids city council approved additional funding for the Sauk Rapids Liquor remodel and gave liquor store staff the authority to make necessary decisions for additional needs during the remodel at the regular meeting March 13. The liquor store remodel is scheduled for mid-April and will cost the city an estimated $100,096. The original remodel was approved in the last regular meeting of 2015. Sauk Rapids city finance director Jack Kahlhamer presented a bid to the city council which included additional lighting and wiring costs of $3,050 and installation and removal of a new checkout counter and cabinets with a cost of approximately $28,849. Kahlhamer presented a quote for a cultured marble counter top from Ron’s Cabinets and informed the council the liquor store would most likely be using a more expensive counter made of Corian, but that he did not have a quote at this time. Kahlhamer adjusted the quote upward by $5,000 to make up this difference. According to Kahlhamer, the average net income of the liquor store over the past six years has been $135,208 and he is pleased the project does not exceed one year’s net. The council granted the

store staff the permission to make decisions during the remodel because of the short length of time during which the changes will happen. The store will close for one week while the store is transformed, which leaves little time for special meetings to be held. During the discussion, the council also questioned whether Sauk Rapids Liquor was handicap accessible in its current state. The presented bid allows for a 120-volt connection to install handicap accessible push-button doors when the city chooses to upgrade. It was concluded that the current building was up to code and the doors are wide enough, but possibly not user-friendly. Kahlhamer is looking into whether there would be cost-savings to install them sooner rather than later. In other council news: - Approved C & H Sport Surfaces, Inc. to resurface four tennis courts at Bob Cross Park. - Approved the purchase of a server and three in-car camera systems for police squads from Mobile-Vision, Inc. - Approved the site plan for a 55-unit apartment complex in the Villages of Creekside at 3200 Old Stone Way NE by Alliance Building Corporation. - Approved a one-year contract with AFSCME Local No. 748 and authorized city administration and the mayor to execute the agreement.

Classes convey empowerment by ANNA SALDANA STAFF WRITER

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is committed to raising awareness of mental illnesses and helping people with a mental illness, and their families, in coping. “The classes are for people who have family members who are living with a mental health condition,” said Louise Echola, a volunteer for NAMI. “These classes are meant to build empathy, coping skills,

problem-solving and communication techniques. They hope they help people how to understand how to locate support and services in their communities.” The family-to-family classes started in the beginning of March and run through May 18. The class meets each Wednesday from 6:30 p.m.- 9 p.m. at Unity Spiritual Center in Sartell. “This is typically a 12week class and when someone attends the classes as a family member or friend of someone with a mental ill-

ness, they have the option to facilitate a family-to-family class in the future,” Echola said. “The people in the class are given information and insight on major mental illnesses, as well as medications and side effects.” The St. Cloud NAMI serves Stearns, Benton, Sherburne and Wright Counties. It is an affiliate of NAMI Minnesota and NAMI National. They supply the training for people who want to facilitate a family-to-family class. “People who attend the class are given insight to em-

power themselves and their loved ones,” Echola said. “These classes have helped a lot of people and we hope they continue to help people in their journey with mental illnesses among their family and friends.” To register for a future class, contact Echola at 320-654-1259 or the current facilitators – Chuck (320290-7713) or Sanda (320249-2560). Information is also online at http://www. namistcloud.com/educationsupport-and-trainings.html.

Poirer continued from front_____________________ Poirer’s biggest desire was for philanthropy to be involved in the foundation of the business. “It was how my siblings and I were brought up,” Poirer said. “My parents never stressed it, but they were always giving back whenever they could. That’s how I knew it needed to be a big part of the business.” Shortly after the business website was operational,

coleslaw, dinner roll and the option to purchase ice cream for dessert. They also serve cheese pizza for kids. The church serves from 5-7:30 p.m. each Friday, except Good Friday, during Lent. The fish fries are one of the churches’ biggest fundraisers and the proceeds go toward many things in the church, including religion classes for youth and maintenance of the church and office. Poirer did a fundraiser for the Tri-County Humane Society in March 2015. “It was relatively successful for having a new brand no one had ever heard of,” Poirer said. “I have a love for animals and own two dogs, so it only seemed fitting for my first test run of the business being tied to philanthropy in that way. I knew I wouldn’t be content in only helping the Humane Society though.”

Since his first event, Poirer has been working on what to do next. One of Poirer’s friends mentioned Anna Marie’s Alliance in conversation. “I researched the organization a little bit,” Poirer said. “It only took me a few minutes to know that this would be my next step.” Poirer, along with the Rice Women of Today, will be sponsoring a 5K race on April 30 at Bend in the River Park

near Rice. The proceeds will be going to Anna Marie’s Alliance. “I had thought about doing a 5K before but never had a purpose to put one together,” Poirer said. “Anna Marie’s Alliance seemed to be perfect.” To register for the 5K, visit www.annamaries5k. com. Culinary national qualifier, again by ANNA SALDANA STAFF WRITER

SAUK RAPIDS – Competing in a national tournament is not something everyone can say they’ve done, but the culinary team at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School can say they’ve done it, nine years in a row. “I had high hopes for the team this year,” said coach Mary Levinski. “I really wanted to keep our streak going, because it’s such a fun thing for the kids to experience.” The team competed at the Minnesota ProStart Invitational state competition on Thursday, March 10 in Moundsview. They placed first in the management section of the competition where they had to present a restaurant concept to a panel of potential investors. They also placed third PHOTOS BY ANNA SALDANA in the culinary portion of the The team of Hanna Meyer (from left), Abby Shiller, Shae Waseka and Julianna O’Mara came competition, where the team together during practice at SRRHS to create a Minnesota-themed meal for state competition. broke into two smaller groups

and were required to cook a three-course meal without the use of any appliances other than gas burners. The team of Hanna Meyer, Julianna O’Mara, Shae Waseka and Abby Shiller went with a Minnesota theme. Their first course was mapleglazed salmon over pickled vegetables and a Buerre Blanc. The second course was a cranberry-stuffed duck breast with roumed potatoes, carrots and a red wine gastrique. The dessert course was a simple syrup immersed almond cake with peach coulis, berry coulis, tuille, sugar nest and whipped cream. The second team of Paige Vogt, Sawyer Amo, Emma Ditlevson and Daighton Ripp cooked their meal with a PanAsian theme. They started their meal with a scallop ceviche with couscous salad and sesame asparagus. Their second course was a pan-seared duck breast with plum sauce, coconut rice and baby bok choy. For dessert, the team

made rice cakes three ways: dango, matcha cream mochi and dafuku. The teams will now have the opportunity to take their skills to the national level April 27-May 2 in Grandview, Texas. “It will be a great experience for the team,” Levinski said. “They are all very excited.” In the past few months, the team has received two other high honors. They were named to the Elite 50 in early December. They also competed at the Di Vine Weekend tournament a few weeks ago and came home with a first place trophy. “The Elite 50 award is a huge honor for our program, especially to get it more than once or twice,” Levinski said. “And the first place trophy definitely boosted the team’s confidence going into the state competition. It paid off for them.”

Lumberjacks win west Granite City clinches division title by NATASHA BARBER STAFF WRITER

The Granite City Lumberjacks started the three-game weekend series off right, by clinching the NA3HL west division title with a win over the Twin City Steel March 11, 5-3. They went on splitting their Saturday and Sunday games against the Breezy Point North Stars with a 6-0 win and a 4-3 (OT) shootout loss. The Lumberjacks finished their regular season with 69 points and a record of 33-113. The Lumberjacks begin

playoffs next weekend in a best of three series against the Alexandria Blizzard at Sports Arena East March 18, the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria Saturday and, if needed, on home ice again Sunday. Granite City 5, Twin City Steel 3 The pressure was intense in Sports Arena East as the Granite City Lumberjacks faced the Twin City Steel March 11. The Lumberjacks gained the lead early after a scrambled goal by Spencer Zwiener (assisted by Tommy Hall), followed by Matt

Flom’s penalty shot which duped Steel goalie Nathan Siclovan before the period end. During the second, Twin City cut the Lumberjack lead to one. Both teams melted the ice during the third. Chase Di Bari scored with the help of Adam Marty and Kevin Finley. Tanner Skaja scored a shorthanded, unassisted goal when he gained the puck center ice. And Flom made an empty netter in the last minute of play. The three goals did not come without answers however as the Steel gained two more in the third as well. Casey Esselman and Skaja each picked up one

assist. Siclovan made 23 saves while Granite City’s goalie Mac Berglove saved 22 of 25. Twin City sat six minutes on three infractions, while the Lumberjacks 12 on six. Granite City 6, Breezy Point North Stars 0 Granite City’s Berglove saved 26 shots on goal March 12 in a shut-out against the North Stars. The Lumberjacks had 40 shots on goal with Braden Altena, Justin Carlson, Tyler Mros, Flom, Esselman and Hall all burying pucks in net. Spencer Nelson, Esselman and Altena each had two assists while Flom, Mros, Hall and Di Bari each tallied one. Granite City accrued 14 minutes on seven penalties. Breezy Point 29 on eight. Breezy Point North Stars 4, Granite City 3 (Shootout) Granite City’s season finale ended in a shoot-out after Breezy Point tied the game in the third period March 13. The North Stars Tyler Larwood scored the game-winning shootout goal on Lumberjack Nathan Isaacson, after Isaacson saved 23 shots earlier in the match-up. Flom and Skaja each had one goal and one assist for the night. Lucas Carroll scored an unassisted goal during the second period and Mros and Altena each gained assist points. Neither Skaja, Flom nor Mros were able to get past goalie Paupore and the help from his pipe. Breezy Point sat 14 minutes on seven infractions and the Lumberjacks 25 on six with a game ejection on Adam Marty for head contact.

Saluting great accomplishments in the Sauk Rapids-Rice High School

Bailey Hennes Parents: Carrie and Patrick Dargis Grade: Senior at Sauk RapidsRice High School Accomplishment: President of Sauk Rapids-Rice Concert Band; Secretary, Librarian, and Treasurer for Concert Choir; President of Drama Club What do you like most about band? Having band in my life allows me to see an alternative side of music, one which is conveyed with little or no spoken language. Tell us about your role as president. My role as president is to mainly act as a representative of the band when decisions, such as future pieces or activities in the community, are made. What are some of your duties within your multiple roles for the choir? While we don’t do much outside of creating fantastic music, my roles as a choir officer include making sure all students have the correct music and making sure the pieces are correctly filed in our choral library. Another one of my roles is organizing potlucks and orders to outside businesses. What has been your favorite song you’ve ever sang for choir? Explain. One of my favorite songs we have performed has been Musick’s Empire by Lloyd Pfautsch. It is part of a triptych of songs that are organized in a semimedieval interval system that creates a wonderful sound. The other parts of the Triptych, while performed with a different group, are equally amazing. What has been your favorite high school class to date? Explain. Asking me to choose a favorite high school class is rather unfair, but it comes down to two. AP Literature and Composition is rather difficult, but we cover literature that has deep meanings about society and human nature. My other favorite class is AP Calculus BC. I took AP Calculus AB last year, and it was challenging, but this year I feel I have learned twice as much in one third of the time. Tell us about a skill you possess that most people don’t know. Most people don’t know this about me, but I am rather good at chess, and I helped put the time capsule in at the high school.

The Sauk Rapids-RiceSartell Storm’N Sabres 15UB girls hockey team competed at the state tournament in Burnsville this past weekend and placed third overall. After winning their playoff game Feb. 27 against Orono-Wayzata, the team was seeded third in the south bracket. They took on Armstrong Cooper March 11, who they defeated in a 2-0 shutout. Saturday they played Minneapolis with the championship bracket on the line and lost 2-1 (OT). The Storm’N Sabres ended their season placing third in a triple overtime game with Wayzata that lasted 70 minutes. The team won 1-0.

What are some words you like to live by? “Anything can happen if you let it,” from the Broadway Musical Mary Poppins. What is your favorite meal, movie, social media and song? What are your future plans? My favorite meal is a nice piece of steak, with very little seasoning; it allows the steaks true flavor to come out. My favorite movie is James Cameron’s “Avatar.” I actually have not used social media, but I have started using Snapchat off and on. My favorite song is “Hammer Fall” by Queen. After high school, I plan to attend a private university, Gustavus Adolphus as of now, for medicine. I have been toying around with a specialization, and I find that I am leaning toward neuroscience or pathology. Leading the Storm is Sponsored by:
