Tips to keep your tree fresh this holiday season

Christmas trees are often the pièce de résistance of holiday decor. Few things draw the attention of holiday guests quite like an awe-inspiring Christmas tree, especially when that tree maintains its fresh, healthy sheen throughout December.

Many families purchase fresh trees over Thanksgiving weekend or during the first weekend of December. Though the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day may seem like a long time to keep a tree looking great, there are a handful of ways for holiday celebrants to help their trees maintain that undeniable appeal for the long haul.

• Pick the right tree. Choosing the right tree is one of the simplest ways to keep a tree looking good throughout the holiday season. A freshly cut tree that buyers choose and cut down themselves

or have cut down can reassure them that the tree is likely to stay strong throughout December.

• Cut an inch off the base of any tree that is not freshly cut. MSU Extension at Michigan State University notes that all Christmas trees are conifers, which means they have resin canals in their trunks.

Once a tree is cut, the resin can block the pores and make it harder for the tree to take in water.

• Replenish the water supply every day. Fresh tree veterans recognize that Christmas trees can be very thirsty, especially within the first week or so of being cut and brought home. Fill the stand with water each morning and, if necessary, refill it each night before going to bed.

• Keep the tree away from a heat source. For safety’s sake, trees should be kept away from heating vents, fireplaces and space heaters.

Lights on a Christmas tree may seem like a relatively recent phenomenon, but people who can’t wait to deck the halls each December may be surprised to learn that this beloved tradition dates all the way back to the late nineteenth century.

Edward Johnson, a friend and colleague of Thomas Edison, introduced holiday light bulbs in 1882. Recipe for

This is a great project to do with children!

Candy Cane Instructions

Grease a hard surface.

Ingredients

• 1 cup sugar • 1/4 cup light corn syrup • 1/4 cup water • 1/8 tsp. cream of tartar • 4 drops oil of peppermint or other flavoring • 4 drops red or green food coloring

Simmer the sugar with the corn syrup, water and cream of tartar until the mix reaches a soft crack stage or about 280 degrees on a candy thermometer. Remove from the heat and add the flavoring.

Divide the syrup in half. Add food coloring to one half; pour out separately onto the greased surfaces.

Cool for 1 to 2 minutes. Pull each half separately; roll into 1/2" thick ropes. Twist colored batch around the white batch pulling until the colors adhere. Cut with scissors into 6" long lengths; bend to crook one end.

NOTE: You can find Wintergreen or oil of cinnamon to use as a flavoring. Work quickly to form candy canes or you can form knots.

Ingredients

• 1 cup flour • 1/2 cup salt • 2 tsp. cream of tartar • 1 cup water • 1 tsp. veg. oil • Lots of cinnamon, allspice, ginger, nutmeg, whatever!

Instructions

Mix the dry ingredients. Play with the spices till you get the scent you want and the color. Mix water and oil together first and THEN add them to the dry ingredients and stir. In a pot, cook the mixture for two to three minutes, stirring frequently. The dough will start to pull away from the sides of the pan and clump together. Take the dough out of the pan and knead the dough until it becomes soft and smooth. Allow to cool and store in an air tight container.

Cranberry Jalapeno

Cream Ch se Dip Ingredients

Use hand food chopper to chop cranberries.

Chop green onion, jalapeño peppers and cilantro.

In a medium-sized bowl, combine the chopped cranberries, green onion, cilantro and jalapeños with ¾ cup sugar, lemon juice and salt and stir gently until blended.

Cover with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator overnight.

Next day add ½ cup flour for every cup of potatoes before portioning out to roll your lefse.

Puffed Corn

• 1 cup butter • 1 cup brown sugar • 1 cup karo syrup • 1 tsp baking soda • 1 bag plain puffed corned

Mix together & cool overnight

• 5 cups riced potatoes • 1 stick butter (melted) • 1/4 cup whipping cream • 1/2 sugar

Remove cranberry mixture from the fridge and stir. Strain out all the liquid.

Use a hand mixer to whip softened cream cheese and ½ cup sugar until smooth (about 2 minutes) and spread cream cheese over bottom of a pie plate or 9×9 dish.

Pour cranberry mixture on top of the cream cheese and serve with crackers (or refrigerate until ready to serve.)

Put butter, brown sugar, and karo syrup in a pan and heat over medium until all combined, stirring continuously.

Keep stirring until the mixture comes to a full boil and stir for 5 minutes.

Add baking soda and turn off the heat. Stir it all together. The caramel will foam...keep stirring.

Pour over your puffed corn mix together. Let cool for about 30 minutes before eating, the caramel gets hot!
