Welcome to Avon! Whether you are looking for a place to visit, live or start a business, you are welcome here. Avon is situated right on Interstate 94, close to the urban area of St. Cloud, yet distant enough to provide a small-town atmosphere. Avon is rich in history and loved by all who have been touched by its quaint charm and friendliness. Minnesota’s New Country radio station (98.1 WWJO-FM) recently reported that Avon landed in the top 10 of a listing of best small towns in Minnesota, ranking high in jobs, affordability, safety, and education — and we couldn’t agree more!

Pull up a chair and enjoy a cup of coffee at the Gathering Grounds, or express your artistic side by painting an assortment of pottery at the PotSpot of Avon. There is something for everyone.

History ofAvon

The first name of Avon was “Spunk Lake,” said to be the name of an Indian Chief named “Spunk,” so reports William Mitchell’s 1915 “History of Stearns County.” But this appealing “fact” is not fact. Jeanette Blonigen Clancy researched the subject for what became the 500-page, “Nestled between Lakes and Wooded Hills: The Centennial History of the Avon Area.”

Spunk Creek, which feeds Upper Spunk, Middle Spunk and Lower Spunk lakes, was named “Sagatagon or Spunk R.” on a map in 1843. “Spunk” was translated from the Ojibway name Sagatagan. It means “exceptionally dry and shredded wood or punk, used as tinder for making a fire.” Native Americans would have found an abundance of decayed wood to light their fires in the water-rich area of Avon. Six lakes are in the city or within a few hundred yards of it and almost 20 more

lakes are close by.

Spunk Lake received mail by stage coach and Claus Keppers was then the postmaster. When the railroad came through in 1872, the name was changed from Spunk Lake to Avon. Mail came every day, and William Murphy was the postmaster. It is said that James J. Hill, owner of St. PaulMinneapolis Railroad, wanted English names for the towns platted every 7 miles to serve and be served by the railroad.

Some of the first settlers in Avon were Nick and Mary (Terwey) Keppers in 1863. Nick’s brothers, Claus, John and Theodore followed, all sons of the Adam Keppers family in St. Joseph. Their family had arrived there in 1854, among the first settlers in St. Joseph. The first recorded baby to be born in Avon was Adam Keppers, son of Mary and Nick, born in 1865.

Mitchell reports that 10 families in Avon asked the Abbey of St. Louis on the Lake (now St. John’s Abbey) for priests to serve them so that they would not have to go to St. Joseph to fulfill their obligations. Benedict Haindl, OSB, walked once a month to say Mass in Claus Keppers’ wagonshop, which also served as a school. In 1871, a log schoolhouse was built, and the liturgy was celebrated in the school.

Spunk Lake became the Village of Avon, which became the City of Avon when it was incorporated in 1900. Avon still is known for its lakes, and the wooded Avon hills are known for their beauty and their unique flora and fauna.

A word from the word from the

Fire Chief

Welcome to the city of Avon from all of us at the Avon Fire Department. The Avon Fire Department was established in 1904, and our members continue to serve our community proudly. We also serve Avon Township and a portion of Collegeville and St. Wendel townships. We respond to all types of emergencies, from structure or car fires to auto accidents or water rescue. Our members are all trained as emergency medical responders and respond to all medical emergencies as well. Twenty-seven fully trained and dedicated members staff our department. We also have two new members who started their training and hope to be done in July. We average approximately 300 calls per year, which includes those related to the busy Interstate 94 corridor. Visit the city website to view our staff and equipment under the “Departments” tab, then “Fire Department.” We have recently completed our fire hall expansion, which included the addition of a 8,200-square-feet apparatus bay and renovation of about 2,000 square feet has become a meeting room and dispatch room. We, as the Avon Fire Department, are very proud of our department and the services we provide to our community — let’s be honest, we consider them

our family and friends. I am very proud to be a part of a group that works very hard to stay up to date with statemandated training along with learning new tactics to provide the best life safety and property preservation we can. Thanks to our communities for supporting us through our multiple fundraisers and donations; we couldn’t do it without you. I hope you and your family find new friends and the great things our community has to offer. If I can be of any help, you may contact me at 320-356-7400

Standing ready to serve, the members of the Avon Fire Department

Sincerely, Chuck Swenson, Avon Fire Chief

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the city of Avon with its great neighborhoods and small-town, friendly atmosphere. The Avon Police Department employs three full-time and four part-time officers, as well as a full-time administrative support and records staff member. The police department had a K-9 program; however, K-9 Maverick retired Jan. 10. Assisting our department with special events and other duties are our volunteer police reserves. You may also see beach patrol officers at the Avon Beach during summer. These officers are uniformed, but unlicensed. Beach patrol officers are granted the rights to enforce city ordinances at the beach, including those addressing smoking, drinking or lewd activities.

The Avon Police Department has three fully-equipped squad cars, which include the latest technology in computers and insquad video cameras. In March 2023, body worn cameras were implemented to assist in the safety of our officers and ongoing transparency while involved in incidents

The primary goal of the Avon Police Department is to provide for the security of persons and property within the community. This is accomplished through providing police services dedicated to the protection of life and property, apprehension of offenders, service to citizens, and providing services that are unbiased, fair, respectful and judicious. In respect for the dignity of all individuals and through public knowledge and confidence, professional and capable assistance is available in times of emergency or need.

The non-emergency Avon Police Department phone number is 320-3567575 and is answered 24/7. The police department also has a Facebook page where information can be found on many topics.

Again, welcome to the city of Avon. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to contact me.

It involves patrolling of the beach by unlicensed uniformed beach patrol officers who have the authority to enforce the Avon beach ordinances, which include enforcement of no alcohol, no smoking, no glass, no grilling etc. as posted by signs and stated in the ordinance.

Regional Trail

Lake Wobegon

The Lake Wobegon Trail measures 62 miles in Stearns County. The Stearns County segment of the Lake Wobegon Trail extends from the Stearns/Todd County line to St. Joseph and from Albany to the Morrison/Stearns counties line. There is an additional 8 miles of the Lake Wobegon Trail in Todd County.

If you connect the Lake Wobegon Trail with Morrison County’s connecting Soo Line Trail and the Central Lakes Trail, which meets the Lake Wobegon Trail in Osakis, you have the longest paved rail trail in the country – over 120 miles long.

The trail is open to bicycling, snowmobiling without studs, walking and rollerblading. The trail was built on two abandoned railroad corridors – the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Soo Line.

The Montessori classroom is quiet and relaxed, exciting and full of challenging work that children find fun and rewarding. The carefully created curriculum and purposefully prepared environment is designed to engage

the learner. They will concentrate and achieve success through their own desire to succeed. There is nothing like the feeling of accomplishment to build self-confidence and a desire to go on to the next challenge. Because the child is our focus, the Montessori teacher individualizes the curriculum to the needs of each child. Our teachers are kind, patient, nurturing and supportive, allowing the child the time they need to be successful. The children learn respect for self, others and their environment. We encourage the children to be independent, self-motivated and responsible as they discover who they are and who they can be.
