In the coming years there will be a great demand for jobs and the private sector will be the core to the solution of this challenge. Many of the new jobs will come out of the small, medium and micro-enterprises, which is why enterprise development programmes are emerging around the world.

The enterprise development programme is just one of the elements of BB-BEE and is considered an effective way to combat poverty across the globe. Its objective is to teach potential entrepreneurs how to create a sustainable business that will grow and increase job creation, which in turn contributes to economic growth.

STAROOT JOURNAL INTERNSHIPS/LEARNERSHIPS BDO Bursary 2017 BDO awards bursaries to students deserving of and studying towards a Chartered Accountancy qualification.

Preference is given to well-rounded individuals who perform equally well in all areas of their lives.

Bursaries are financial assistance given to students for further study for either degree, post graduate studies or both.

Bursaries are awarded on a financial needs basis and are linked to satisfactory academic achievements with a solid academic track record at school and/or university.

Students who are awarded a bursary are required to serve a training contract with the specific office who awarded the bursary on completion of their studies.

Bursaries have conditions attached to them and once students have completed their studies, students will have to work for a period of three years.

BDOS’s amount of money can be for that of a full bursary or that of a half bursary.

Our bursaries do not cover all study expenses and only covers registration fees, tuition fees and books for each year of study.

Students have to therefore be prepared to meet some of the costs.

Applications are collected and processed throughout the course of the year, due to the number of applicants, applicants may only receive feedback towards the end of the year.

Bursary applicants should meet the following criteria: NOT be signed with any other professional services firm to complete a training contract; NOT be in possession of a bursary / scholarship / financial assistance award which has employment obligations or post training contract employment obligations; Be planning to study towards a Chartered Accountancy qualification (learners/scholars); Commitment to study towards a Chartered Accountancy qualification with majors in accounting and auditing; Be studying at a university which offers South African Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (SAICA) accredited programmes through to Honours / CTA level.

STAROOT JOURNAL KASIE BIZ PROFILE National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Funding The National Youth Development Agency is offering youth businesses the opportunity to apply for and receive grant funding. This funding will help to grow youth business and increase job creation within South Africa.

Through the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Grant Programme, young entrepreneurs have the opportunity to start and grow sustainable businesses.

In 2013, the NYDA changed its youth enterprise funding model from a fixed interest loan structure to a micro-finances grant provision system. This means that you will not have to pay back the funding the agency provides you with.

NYDA partnered with Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Small Enterprise Finance Agency to assist youth-owned businesses with funding and support over a period of five years. This R25 million grant programme offers both financial and non-financial support to qualifying young entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35.

Only around 500 small to medium enterprises can expect to benefit from the financial portion of the NYDA Grant Programme per year. These businesses will consist of individual ventures and cooperatives. Additionally, many more can benefit from non-financial business support services including branding, marketing and website development.

Here you’ll find information on how to get funding from NYDA. However, do you have what it takes to run your own small to medium size enterprise? If you’re an individual or a group of young people who want to start or grow an existing business, then NYDA Grant Programme is the right funding for you.

The grant provides both financial and non-financial support to youth entrepreneurs. Grants start from R1 000 to a maximum of R100 000 and support includes mentorship programmes, a voucher programme, market linkages, entrepreneurship development programme, youth co-operative development programme, and other business support services required.

For young entrepreneurs seeking grants, grants are available for (and not limited to) motor mechanics and panel beaters, electricians, plumbers, domestic appliance repairs and services, hair dressers, cleaning companies, beauticians, small-scale recycling businesses, car washes and street vendors to name just a few.

The grant structure is in the following three levels, each focusing on a different type of youth enterprise, such as: Individual grants issues to formal and informal businesses that are in the start-up development phase of their business.

Who Qualifies For NYDA Funding?

The following are the grant programmes qualifying criteria: • You need to be at least 18 years old and no older than 35 years old.

• You’ll need the grant for business start-up or growth.

• You will need to have the necessary skills, experience or with the potential skills needed for your enterprise.

STAROOT JOURNAL INTERNSHIPS/LEARNERSHIPS Liberty Bursary Tertiary Programme LIBERTY Bursaries are granted for full-time study of Actuarial Science at various tertiary institutions. Applicants must show the ability to innovate and share our passion for people; thus maintaining our competitive advantage.

Successful applicants are expected to do a minimum amount of vacation work during the June and December holidays at Liberty Life’s Head Office in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Bursaries are reviewed after each examination based on the student’s academic performance and are renewed annually. All bursaries are granted on merit, but preference is given to black (African, Coloured and Indian) applicants.

Requirements: Excellent overall results including a distinction for higher grade mathematics.

A minimum of two distinctions (including mathematics) if higher grade physical science is one of the incumbent’s subjects.

A minimum of four distinctions (including mathematics) if physical science is not one of the incumbent’s subjects.

At tertiary level, students must maintain continuous excellence in academic performance in all subjects.

Good leadership qualities and participation in extramural activities such as sports, debating societies, chess clubs and various Olympiads, etc are an added advantage.

Costs Covered: Tuition fees are paid for each academic year of study and reviewed annually based on academic performance.

Residence fees/subsistence allowance is paid for shared accommodation at a university residence.

A monthly subsistence allowance is paid if the student chooses not to live at the university residence.

A book allowance is paid annually for the purchase of textbooks.

First year students qualify for a calculator allowance.

Applications are open to all students regardless of the year of study.

Once approved, the bursar will enter into an agreement with Liberty Life that will be renewed annually.

STAROOT JOURNAL INTERNSHIPS/LEARNERSHIPS SA Reserve Bank Bursaries for 1st Year students The South African Reserve Bank (the Bank), as part of addressing the severe shortage of skills in South Africa, provides bursaries to students in relevant fields of study who are from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The purpose of the bursary scheme is to assist financially needy students who obtain good results in Matric/Grade 12 and who want to study in fields relevant to the Bank.

The bursary is intended for undergraduate studies at a South African university on a full-time basis.

Studies for which bursaries will be granted The studies that students intend to pursue shall have a bearing on, and be applicable to, the functions and activities of the Bank.

(For more information on the Bank, visit the Bank’s website: www.reservebank.co.za). This includes, for example, Economics, Information Technology, Finance, Law and Accounting, and excludes, for example, Medicine, Dentistry and Social Work.

A bursary will be granted from the first academic year and reviewed annually Bursary holders need not reapply for the bursary each year.

Criteria for awarding bursaries Over and above the criteria set out in paragraphs 1 to 3 above, the following will be used as guidelines in the awarding of bursaries: • Bursaries will be awarded to students who obtain 60 per cent in the June Matric/Grade 12 examinations. Final awarding of a Bank bursary is subject to a student’s final Matric/Grade 12 results and enrolment acceptance at a South African university.

• Bursaries will be awarded to South African citizens only.

• The total number of students and related bursary costs will be reviewed annually.

• An annual one-off payment for books, accommodation (university accommodation only) and tuition fees will be made to a student.

Post-bursary obligations The Bank will have first right of refusal with regard to funded students, that is, bursary holders will be obliged to work for the Bank for a period equal to their bursary period, unless the Bank chooses not to employ them.

Students who choose not to work for the Bank despite the Bank offering them a position after completing their studies will be required to pay the full cost of the bursary back to the Bank.

The Bank will provide students who are Bank bursary holders vacation work opportunities that are funded by the Bank.

Applying for a home loan is stressful for most people, but this simple financial process can become disproportionately complex for entrepreneurs or freelancers ‒ people who have uncertain or unpredictable income flows. The rigorous affordability assessments required by the National Credit Act don’t quite take into account the circumstances of those not earning a regular monthly salary. However, not all hope is lost.

Careen McKinon, provincial sales manager at bond originator ooba, says the home loan application process requires a little bit more effort when you are self-employed or a freelancer, as the banks look at you as a higher risk. “The lack of a guaranteed income from a single source can make banks anxious about financing a home for you,” she says.

According to ooba, 10% of home loan applications received in the third quarter of last year were from self-employed applicants, compared to 11% in the second quarter of last year and 9% in the third quarter of 2014. This is about half of the 20% level experienced in 2007, indicating that self-employed applicants are generally less confident about their ability to qualify for home finance.

Freelancer Sue Charlton says she was able to qualify for a home loan. “If you ignore the pointy-down faces of estate agents and bank personnel and get your financials from a tax person/accountant, supply your banking details, assets and liabilities and statements, it’s not too bad. My experience is that I have not had too bumpy a ride despite the pessimism of some,” she says.

The first step is to ensure that all your paperwork is in order. If you are self-employed, McKinon suggests that you submit the following when applying for a home loan:

• Loans

Comparative financials covering a trading or working period from the last two years.

• A letter from your auditor confirming your personal income.

• If your financials are more than six months old, you will need up-to-date signed management accounts.

• A cash flow forecast for the next 12 months.

• A personal statement of assets and liabilities.

• Personal and business bank statements (six to 12 months, depending on the banks’ requirements).

• Latest IT34, which serves as confirmation from SARS that your tax affairs are in order.

• Company, CC or trust statutory documents.

• ID documents for all the directors, members or trustees.

Although this list seems rather daunting, it is all the more reason to use an expert to guide you through the process, as this will get you one step closer to acquiring a home loan. “It is imperative to have your tax affairs and finances in order and up to date. In addition, it will help to separate your personal and business expenses,” says McKinon.

If you know you want to buy a property at some stage, one of the best moves you can make as a freelancer is to start saving towards a deposit. Barker says the home loan application process instantly becomes smoother once the bank sees that you have saved up a deposit, reducing the risk that the bank is taking on. Ideally, you would have a bigger deposit than a typical home loan application. Instead of a 10% deposit, work towards a 20% deposit so that the bank only takes on 80% of the loan-to-value risk. “A large deposit undoubtedly weighs the odds in your favour,” Barker says.

“Only as a last resort and even then, we are moving away from the surety model,” Barker says. Typically, a family member or spouse would offer suretyship and the banks tend to prefer a joint ownership structure rather than surety. When someone stands surety for you on a loan, it means that they are undertaking to repay the loan if you default or are unable to meet the loan repayments. Previously, this was the equivalent of standing guarantor on your loan. However, under the National Credit Act, standing surety for someone on a loan has taken on greater significance and can now affect your own affordability assessment.

“Ultimately, a freelancer wants to be in the position where they have multiple contracts with different clients, where they have built up track records and can assure the bank of future income streams,” he concludes.
