PROBUS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA INC Reg No: A0009835H ABN: 51 370 595 374 The activities of PAV effectively commenced on 21st November 1984 when representatives of two Probus Clubs, Dromana Men’s and the Frankston, sponsored a “handshake” meeting of 11 Probus Clubs residing in the Southern suburbs of Melbourne, with the objective of forming an association.

Delegates attending that November meeting agreed to form an Association, which became known as the Victorian Association of Probus Clubs South-East Region.

In 1986 the association became incorporated and added Inc. to its name.

The South- East Region was ultimately removed from the name in 1995 and became simply the Probus Association Of Victoria Inc.(PAV).

The activities now extend to all Victorian Probus Clubs currently affiliated with PAV.

Spring is almost here

Again it’s great to hear of so many clubs planning celebrations of Probus 50 years in Australia. We all like to feel part

of a milestone event – to be alive in the moment. Pleasing too that many clubs are joining with others to create their events.

PAV has held their second 50 Year event with our High Tea at Chirnside Park- a fun, glittery occasion.

Thankyou to all who took part.

September 23rd will see another event with the Afternoon Tea Dance at Stonnington Sports Centre with our special guest exBackroads Presenter and Probus 50 Year Ambassador Heather Ewart. Come along and enjoy the 50s-70s music with prizes for retro costume if you dare.

November 12th will see the annual Probus Golf Tournament at Goonawarra Golf Course, Sunbury presented by Sunbury Combined, Sanctuary lakes and Point Cook Probus Clubs.

Celebrating 25 years WHAT’S happening at Fawkner Merlynston Probus Club Inc? Milestones are meant to be celebrated and the Fawkner Merlynston Probus Club members did just that in June this year.

The remaining four Foundation Members were given the cake-cutting honours and rightly so. From left to right, Valerie Priest, Shirley West, Beth Jones and Marguerite Cotter have been constant active members from the very beginning of the Club’s inception. At a relaxed meeting followed by lunch a good time was had by all. As it was a look back at what can be achieved over 25 years of Probus friendship, fellowship and fun everyone participated in a Bucket a list of 25 places things they may have visited in their travels and life in general. Each

member received a lucky dip gift wrapped birthday present. The commemorative 25 Year Certificate from PSPL was also proudly on display. Our Probus meetings and get togethers certainly gives us all a reason to group with lots of eating and of course lots more chatter. And the birthday cake was delicious!

History, heritage, parliament COVER STORY ON 3 June 2026, eleven members of the Begonia City Probus club took advantage of free train travel to Melbourne to do a tour of Parliament House. This was made possible by our local member, Michaela Settle, Minister for Agriculture of Victoria.

A member of her staff, Jannine Ferris, was our lovely guide for the day and she was joined by Melissa from Michaela’s office.

We were met in the grandiose vestibule with it’s intricately tiled floor. We toured the

Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council chambers which were built in 1856. We browsed the extensive library completed in 1861.

We wandered through the peaceful native garden at the rear which almost conceals the modern Member’s offices. The garden also revealed a lawn bowling green with it’s own club house. We enjoyed lunch in the plush dining room.

We were most fortunate our visit coincided with Reconciliation Week and we were invited

to a special celebration held in the most impressive Queens Hall.

We were addressed by several indigenous leaders and treated to a song and dance performance by students from Worawa Aboriginal College, Healesville.

We were able to observe a sitting of Parliamentary question time, which was quite an experience! After a coffee at Pellegrini’s, we headed back to the train and reflected on the amazing tour we had all enjoyed immensely.

30th anniversary celebrations in style IN May this year Cowes Probus celebrated its 30th anniversary in style.

The club booked the Phillip Island Bowls club for the event and over 95 members attended a special presentation and fully catered lunch.

Fun, friendship and fellowship DROMANA Valley Probus has had a busy first half of 2026.

We started with a barbecue in January.

February saw our group activities start up again and some enjoyed a John Farnham Tribute Concert at the Frankston Art Centre.

March was especially busy with our AGM and election of new officer bearers and Probus‘ 50th birthday at Government House, where we were represented by our new President, Sue. We also had the annual Caravan and Cabin trip, this year to Swan Hill, enjoying the Catalina Museum at Lake Boga, the Pioneer Settlement and paddle steamer. The Sound and Light Show, Annual Bocce Championship and wine tour kept us busy not to mention our Happy Hours when we met several members of the local Probus Club. Thank you to Dan and Andrew for all your hard work - we all had a wonderful time.

In April, the art class led by Margaret, working over four consecutive weeks, produced a range of embroidery and collages, greatly appreciated by the club.

May saw some members on a week-long bus trip organised by Barb, thank you for your organisation. Based in Wangaratta, we set off each day enjoying beautiful Autumn weather and the spectacular scenery throughout the Alpine region.

Our club has had its numbers boosted this year thanks to our website, word of mouth and another club closing and some members joining us. These new members have fitted in well and have especially enjoyed our trip, dine-outs and happy hours as well as many of our other activities.

Trip to Sydney and mountains Peter McKernan SYDNEY and the Blue Mountains - A seven day tour by Probus Club of Torquay Zeally Bay members.

Day 1: Arrive Sydney (Sunday 17 May, 2026) Welcome to our 7-day tour - to explore our heritage and history in the great city where it all began - Sydney! We (all 37 of us) were met at Sydney Airport and what better way to start our adventure than straight to The Sydney Opera House. First up, we enjoyed a glass of wine with our chosen meal from the world-class alfresco dining at Opera Kitchen (MIDDEN). We met our guide after lunch for a spectacular Sydney Opera House tour, taking us inside one of the world’s greatest buildings. We saw inside the theatres, discovered the stories, history and architecture of the House and learnt how architect, Jorn Utzon’s, heritage-listed masterpiece came into existence. After the tour we had a brief coach tour of Sydney before checking in at our hotel, the NOVOTEL. Dinner was a buffet with drinks & a lot of chatter! A long day it was but most enjoyable.

Day 2: Sydney Harbour National Park

Sydney and the Blue Mountains - A seven day tour by Probus Club of Torquay Zeally Bay members.

(Monday 18 May) Today we visited two of Sydney’s most historic homesteads. Within the Sydney Harbour National Park, we had a guided tour of the house and grounds of Strickland Estate. Perched on the waterfront of Sydney Harbour in Vaucluse, Strickland House is of exceptional historical significance. It’s a prime example of an early Victorian Italianate style mansion (1850s villa), designed for a picturesque setting. It enjoys some of the best harbour views anywhere in Sydney.

We had lunch at the beautiful Nielsen Park Cafe – The PAVILLION. Located on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour we had stunning harbour views providing a lovely backdrop for our delicious three course lunch. After lunch we had a short trip to visit Vaucluse House. This historic house survives as one of Sydney’s only 19th century harbour side estates with house, kitchen wing, stables and outbuildings and is still surrounded by ten hectares of formal gardens and grounds.

Built in 1803, Vaucluse House was once owned by William Charles Wentworth, father of the Australian Constitution, his wife Sarah and their immediate family of 10 children who lived in the house from 1827-1853 and again in 1861-1862. The gothic style mansion includes both lavish entertaining rooms and functional ‘downstairs’ areas.

Vaucluse House represents the lifestyles of the Wentworth’s and of the servants, both convict and free, who lived and worked there.

The interiors include original Wentworth pieces together with furniture and furnishings dating back to the mid-19th century. We then returned to Darling Square for dinner and then a sleep – after a busy day!

Day 3: Sydney (Tuesday 19 May, 2026) This morning we really stepped back in time as we took a coach ride to Manly for our visit to Q Station. From the 1830s to

1984 migrant ships arriving in Sydney with suspected contagious disease anchored inside North Head and off-loaded passengers and crew into quarantine. This was to protect local Sydney residents from the threat of infection. To really understand what these people went through, we took a ‘wander tour’, starting at the wharf and visiting various heritage buildings. The tour ended at the lunch marquee. This was the perfect spot for a rest. The shuttle buses took us back to the entrance gate. We then visited Manly for general site seeing before boarding coach back to the hotel. Some of us then wandered through “China-Town” before returning for dinner at hotel.

Day 4: Sydney Zoo & The Nepean Belle (Wednesday 20 May, 2026) We departed our hotel and travelled to the Sydney Zoo located in western Sydney. Home to a wide range of iconic animal species, this modern zoo is the first built in Sydney for almost 100 years. After a morning at the zoo, we travelled to Penrith where we boarded the Nepean Belle for a luncheon cruise into the Blue Mountains National Park.

Some lucky members were able to steer the paddlewheeler through the beautiful Nepean Gorge! Back at the hotel we enjoyed some pre-dinner drinks before dinner.

Celebrating 25 years ON 3 June 2026, the Probus Club of Ballarat Goldfields celebrated its 25th anniversary.

On Sunday 31 May, 73 members and guests gathered at the Grand Function Centre to enjoy a two-course meal to celebrate this momentus occasion.

There were 12 Foundation members including the Foundation President Faye Broom in attendance.

They were all presented with a 25-year badge from Ballarat East Rotary Club President Jenny Coburn, our sponsor club.

Blue Day 5: The Blue Mountains (Thursday 21 May, 2026) We boarded our coach for a day trip into the Blue Mountains, following the scenic Cliff Drive near Katoomba to take in the sights of Echo Point and the mystical Three Sisters. Cameras were working overtime getting photos of the spectacular scenery.

We then visited nearby Scenic World where we were booked on the Ultimate Discovery Pass which included: a ride on the Scenic Railway, the world’s steepest incline railway with a gradient of 52 degrees and travelled through the tunnel and ancient rainforest.

Then we disembarked, to take the 300m rainforest boardwalk to connect with the Flyway platform. The Scenic Cableway is the steepest aerial cable car in Australia. Our final adventure was to join the Scenic Skyway to take the journey 270m above ancient ravines and dazzling waterfalls. This ride boasts a world first, state of the art Glass Floor. After a terrific time at Scenic World, we headed into Katoomba township to a magnificent attraction - Carrington Hotel.

The Carrington has a long and rich history spanning over a century. It opened in 1882 and closed her doors in late 1985, remaining empty and derelict until 1991. Following eight years of restoration, the Carrington reopened in December 1998. Here we enjoyed a tour of the hotel after a magnificent High Tea. It was then back to town for drinks and dinner.

Day 6: Darling Harbour (Friday 22 May, 2026) After our usual buffet breakfast, we boarded our coach and headed to the Australia National Maritime Museum. The museum has fascinating artefacts, lively exhibitions, fun activities and even the chance to board ships and experience life on the water.

Some of us ventured through the submarine and other vessels. After time exploring the exhibitions, we made our way to the Sydney Tower Eye for lunch. Located 250 metres above Sydney streets, we enjoyed unrivalled 360-degree views of the city and beyond – Another magnificent buffet lunch. We returned to the hotel to rest and prepare for our final evening - A cruise on the wonderful Sydney Harbour. We enjoyed drinks and a three course dinner aboard the “MV Sydney 2000” with the bonus attraction of the VIVID Light Show. From the water, the lights of Sydney and surrounds are simply magnificent! Led lighting and fireworks were a photographer’s dream!

Day 7: Home to Melbourne (Saturday 23 May, 2026) Fortunately, we had a late checkout – Much needed after such a busy week. We checked out of our hotel, thanked the staff for their hospitality and then transferred to the airport for our return flight home. What a great adventure we had!

Crafting ingenuity at Mont Albert

By Julie Pincombe THE talented members of the Arts and Craft Group at Mont Albert North Probus Club once again delighted everyone with an outstanding display of creativity at our June meeting.

This challenge invited the crafters to rescue Grandma’s forgotten doilies from the bottom drawer and transform these intricate treasures into imaginative new creations, giving them a fresh lease on life and allowing their beauty to be appreciated once again.

The results were truly inspiring.

Delicate doilies were reinvented as Christmas decorations and angels, decorative coat hangers, embellishments for clothing, hats and handbags, a beautifully covered umbrella, a striking portrait of a Spanish dancer, bowls, doorstops and jewellery.

To complete the occasion, the “icing on the cake” was quite literally the icing on the cake. Our delicious homemade morning tea cake was decorated with a delicate doily pattern dusted in icing sugar,

providing the perfect finishing touch to a wonderful display.

Once again, Mont Albert North Probus Club extends its sincere thanks to the Arts and Craft Group for creating another memorable and inspiring event.

Vital home support MEMBERS of the Templestowe Central Probus Club gained valuable insights into one of the biggest challenges facing older Australians when Design Matters National (DMN) visited the club in May to present How Older Residents Can Adapt Their Own Homes.

Supported by Speaker Convenor Pam Farmer, the DMN presentation explored practical ways people can modify their homes to remain safe, comfortable and independent while continuing to enjoy the communities they know and love.

The session was presented by DMN CEO Danielle Johnston and Ingrid Hornung, former DMN President and principal of Designs for You. Drawing on her extensive experience as a Building Designer, Ingrid shared real-life examples of home renovations that improve accessibility, comfort and energy efficiency while preserving the character of existing homes.

Rather than focusing on major renovations, Ingrid demonstrated how thoughtful design and careful planning can make everyday living easier. Topics included safer bathrooms, improved lighting, and flexible layouts that allow homes to adapt as people’s needs change over time.

The presentation generated plenty of discussion, with members asking questions about double glazing, flooring, solar energy, accessibility features and other practical home improvements. The enthusiastic response highlighted the growing interest in ageing well at home.

receiving “lots of positive feedback“ from members and said she would be recommending the presentation to other Probus clubs within the Melbourne East Probus group.

Celebrating Frank’s remarkable century THE Probus Club of White Hills recently celebrated the 100th birthday of foundation member, Frank Holland. The clubrooms were decked out in black and white to acknowledge his lifetime of allegiance to the Collingwood Football Club, plus a special black and white birthday cake. Bill Knight made a small presentation to Frank, complete with some ‘thought provoking’ advice. Frank was made a Life Member several years ago, and he and wife Lillian, have enjoyed many years of fun and fellowship with the Probus Club of White Hills. There would not be many 100 year old members still active in their local Probus community, so congratulations Frank Holland on being White Hills’ first centenarian, and thankyou for a life well lived!

Milestones are always a special presentation to members who have served the club well over many years. In June, a 10 Year Certificate was presented to Evelyn Robertson with thanks for her contribution as member, Secretary and Treasurer and a 15 Year Certificate to Glenys Billings to acknowledge her time spent as member, President, Vice President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Media Rep and Race Day Guru. Several members ventured to Harcourt recently to visit the Victorian Miniature Railway (VMR) in Harmony Way, and to show some support for the Harcourt locals

Bill Knight, 100 Year Old Frank Holland and President Andrew Howlett. who suffered so much in the devastating bushfires that wreaked havoc over the district during last summer. Harcourt, famous for its apples, wine and cider, is now home to Australia’s longest miniature railway, which has been a decade in the making. Set on 65 acres, featuring 2.7kms of track and a choice of steam, diesel or electric trains, VMR is the perfect destination for a day out for families of all ages. One very interesting feature is the replica of historic Maryborough Railway station. The White Hills Probus club visitors enjoyed a lovely train ride on a beautiful day, with picturesque mountain views. Lunch at the busy Harcourt General Store was enjoyed by all. An attraction well worth a visit by any other Probus Club in Victoria!

A visit to Maiden Gully Fire Brigade (CFA) facilitated by Andrew Howlett and John Ham (who are both members of White

Hills Probus Club) was a very interesting and informative morning, followed by lunch at the Marong Hotel. John and Andrew explained the firefighting structure of brigades in Victoria, the number of members and the types of call outs received. Interestingly, one of Maiden Gully’s three vehicles had already attended a house fire on that same morning. There was also an overview of fire safety products and uses in the home. The correct use of fire blankets and fire extinguishers was demonstrated and several members were actually able to use a fire blanket on a burning pot or a fire extinguisher on a larger tank fire. Morning tea was much appreciated, thanks to Maxine Howlett.

Guest speaker for June was Graeme Clarke from Radio KLFM 96.5 or 106.3 who spoke on the origin of the station and the changes that have occurred over the

years. The current licence allows them to broadcast in local areas from Bendigo to Castlemaine but reception is also available from as far away as Rushworth, Daylesford, Kyneton and Heathcote.

Since 2014 KLFM has been the official ‘Emergency Response’ broadcaster with a ‘ Memorandum of Understanding’ through Emergency Victoria (Vic Emergency) which allows them to inform the public and help protect human life in the case of fire, flood, motor vehicle accident, housefire or any other catastrophe. Graeme explained the important role that KLFM played in keeping the public well informed with the flood event in 2024 and the recent bushfires that destroyed Harcourt.

Upcoming events: Christmas in July meeting, followed by traditional Christmas Lunch at Kangaroo Flat Sports Club. Guest speaker: JamesVogele, Bendigo Greyhound Adoptions Program. September: Footy Colours Day with AFL guest speaker followed by pie, pastie and lamington lunch in clubrooms. MEMBERS and guests gathered to celebrate a wonderful milestone as the Charlton Probus Club marked its 20th birthday with a special luncheon.

The occasion was filled with friendship, laughter and memories reflecting two decades of bringing people together through companionship and shared interest.

The venue Charlton Park Complex was presented for the celebration creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for everyone in attendance. Before the luncheon begun, Marg Bartlett read Grace.

Members enjoyed the delicious luncheon (Lily Vale) catering while reminiscing about the journey over the past 20 years from its early beginnings the active vibrant club it is today.

During the celebrations tribute was paid to the foundation members whose vision and dedication established the club, as well as to the many committee members and volunteers who have worked tireless over the years.

Foundation members who had left the club and residing in other places returned to celebrate. Along with members from Donald, St Arnaud, Wycheproof, Castel Donington Maryborough.

Foundation Member Pat Mathews was given the honour to cut the cake, suitably made by Naomia Fitzpatrick.

Adding to the celebration a well-prepared slide show by Secretary Anne Kenny allowed for reminiscing and reflecting the good times spent over the past 20 years.

The 20th birthday was more than just a celebration of years, it was a celebration of people, friendship and community spirit.

President Sandra suitably expressed what a wonderful day we all have had.

As the celebration drew to a close Foundation member Garry Larmour read the Travellers Farwell.

Whale season runs through winter, with sightings often possible between June and October. Members of the Probus Club of Mount Waverley enjoyed a tour of the Shrine of Remembrance.

AFTER a pleasant lunch at the Observatory cafe on Monday 18 May, a small contingent of the Probus Club of Mount Waverley wandered across the road to begin a tour of the Shrine of Remembrance.

Our designated tour guide, Nelson, gave a brief introductory talk about the construction of the Shrine stating that its classical ziggurat design was based on the ancient Tomb of Mausolus built between 353 and 351 BC at Halicarnassus, modernday Bodrum, Turkey, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world.

We then proceeded to the ‘Hall of Columns’ a cathedral-like undercroft consisting of 64 massive red-brick pillars to support the massive weight of the monument above. The bricks used were made and laid by returned soldier tradesmen who were employed wherever possible in the building of the Shrine due to the high unemployment and financial difficulty in Australia, post-World War I. There is currently an exhibition, HERstory, in this area shining a light on women based in Victoria who share their stories of military service from 1942 to the present day. Our member Anne Scerri’s mother, Hilary Jose nee Benn, is featured having enlisted in the WAAAF at the age of 18 and becoming one of the first women photographers in the RAAF. Hilary’s job included being a passenger in a Tiger Moth filming the ground and the horizon of the route taken. What a trailblazer!

The Galleries of Remembrance is also in this underground chamber and has a magnificent collection of 800 objects, photographs, uniforms and works of art illustrating the personal experiences of Australians at war since the 1850s.The Changi Flag also on display in this space

was once positioned in the garden of the Sultan of Jahore’s palace in Singapore but was removed by Captain Kenneth Parsons of the 2/3rd Motor Ambulance Convoy in 1942 to prevent capture by the invading Japanese. Concealed throughout his three-and-a-half years of imprisonment, it became a symbol of resilience and was adorned with over 100 signatures including 16 servicemen headed for the notorious Burma/Thailand Railway.

We then visited the Sanctuary, the soul of the Shrine and a place of quiet reflection.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – Remembrance Day - a ray of sunshine is directed through a small aperture in the roof to shine on the word LOVE on the biblical inscription ‘greater love hath no man’ engraved on the Stone of Remembrance, a marble slab below floor level so all must lower their heads in respect. A system of mirrors was installed by surveyors from RMIT in 1971 to correctly redirect the light during daylight saving time. Surrounding the Sanctuary is the Ambulatory which contains 42 bronze caskets housing 42 Books of Remembrance recording in fine calligraphic script a total of 89,100 names of persons either born or enlisted in Victoria and served during World War I. The Shrine of Remembrance was funded by the grateful people of Victoria during a time of extreme hardship and built between 1927 and 1934 as a tribute to the 89,000 who served and the 19,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice in the 1914-1918 war; a permanent iconic landmark for future generations to remember and grieve those involved in and those who died in all wars and conflicts. Our tour of this sacred memorial was moving and informative.

Following an enjoyable morning exploring the museum, members gathered for lunch at the flight Deck Club, where they shared their impressions of the various exhibits on a memorable and informative outing.

It was wonderful day of friendship, discovery and nostalgia, with many members leaving with a newfound appreciation for the ingenuity, skill and courage of the men and women who have shaped Australian aviation history.

ON Tuesday June 16 twenty seven members of the Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club visited the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) in Parkville.

WEHI has operated for 110 years and is Australia’s oldest medical research facility.

The group was divided into three to visit the Centre for Dynamic Imaging, and assay laboratory and the historical timeline display.

The imaging laboratory contained an amazing display of optical imaging technologies which allow researchers to examine the internal function of living organisms at a scale measured in millionths of a millimetre.

After donning white coats and protective goggles, we watched the assay equipment robotically load thousands of specimens for testing against a library of standard reagents – a process which reduces testing time from weeks to days or hours.

MEMBERS of the Probus Club of Maling Combined enjoyed a absorbing day of aviation history when they visited the Moorabbin Air Museum on Wednesday 27 May. The museum’s impressive collection of historic aircraft captured everyone’s imagination, with several adventurous members climbing into the cockpits of some aircraft to experience what it might have been like to pilot these remarkable machines.

Among the many exhibits were beautifully restored aircraft engines, military uniforms and a wealth of aviation memorabilia. Particularly impressive were the rare CAC Wirraway, and a Bristol Beaufighter which is the only surviving example of its type in the world - both highlighting Australia’s rich aviation heritage.

The museum was founded in 1962 as the Australian Aircraft Restoration Group, and included members of the Aviation Historical Society. It is operated entirely by dedicated volunteers. For more than 20 years the Museum has grown, with more and more aircraft being donated or acquired. During the 1970’s and 1980’s it became apparent that some of the collection would need to be under cover for preservation purposes and funds were raised for the purchase of an 8,000 square foot hanger, which was later extended.The museum is now home to more than 60 historic craft, which is the largest collection of Australian made aircraft and engines in the world.

Guide Dogs inspire A group of Knoxfield Ladies Probus Club members together with two ladies from Boronia Ladies Probus recently visited the beautiful new premises of the Guide Dogs Victoria in Kew. The buildings have been designed for clients of all ages, for the training of their special puppies and eventually the chosen dogs to become guide dogs. We were welcomed by Erin who is a client and worker at the Centre as well as volunteering and fund raising.

Erin began losing her sight as a teenager and has sadly just lost her own guide dog, but will be gaining a beautiful new guide companion. We learned of lot of new and interesting information about the matching and training of the dogs as well as their new owners.

We then enjoyed a tour of the premises. Part of the tour was watching six gorgeous puppies romping in their playground. It was a great experience. We then travelled to the Racecourse Hotel in Caulfield for a tasty lunch.

We tested our brains this month, as in place of a speaker we enjoyed a trivia quiz run by Andrea and Ros. It was great fun and we look forward to another one next year. Christmas in July will be at the Dorset Gardens Hotel, and our dinner group will be assembling at Kim’s Vietnamese Restaurant in Mountain Gate.

Next month we are looking forward to Phillip Johnson the UK Chelsea Garden Show winner telling us about his big win and the installation of the Garden into the Olinda Australian Botanic Garden.

Tips to help stop crime MELBOURNE Bearbrass Probus members got a great education on how to report suspicious activity while remaining anony mous. The meeting talk was by speaker Aiden Bloomfield of Crime Stoppers.

He spelt out the workings of this phonein centre, which allows callers to report suspicious activity without fear of unwanted consequences -- it operates independently from the police. In contrast, you make direct calls to police through the 000 emergency line.

Last year 110,000-plus Crime Stopper calls came in (up 14 per cent), enabling police to arrest 1200 suspects, lay 4000 charges, and secure convictions resulting in confiscation of about $5m in cash and property, and seizure of nearly $30m illegal drugs.

“Crime Stoppers callers might have reasons to not involve police directly,” Aiden said. “They might also feel their suspicions are trivial or silly, but their information might well complete a jigsaw of material the police are working on.”

A caller might report that they have been tidying an attic and found a hidden gun. “If you take it to the local police station, don’t wave it around there,” Aiden joked.

He mentioned that shoplifting is often reported anonymously – the main issue is not a petty theft but organised groups that ‘storm’ a retailer as one member creates distractions.

Another crime wave involves both car thefts and thefts from cars – 31,500 cars were stolen in Victoria in the year to March, often defeating car security or exploiting people who don’t properly secure their car.

Police are lobbying car makers to make top security built-in rather than an ‘extra’.

One inhibitor to public safety is apathy – people imagining their call won’t make any difference, or the ‘by-stander’ effect where each of 100 witnesses thinks someone else will do the reporting.

“To reduce crime, get to know your neighbours and community, and let us know about anything going on around your residence that doesn’t seem right,” Aiden said.

ON the morning of 23 June 2026, members of the Probus Club of Pakenham East met at the local football ground to carpool for our trip to the Australian Jazz Museum at Wantirna.

We all arrived safely and were warmly greeted by our host, who escorted us inside for an introduction to the museum and its purpose. He explained that the museum is dedicated to proactively collecting, preserving, archiving, and sharing Australia’s rich jazz heritage.

It is home to the largest collection of Australian jazz memorabilia and recordings in the country.

We then divided into two groups to tour this remarkable facility. The museum is something of a rabbit warren, with much of it consisting of converted shipping containers housing the administration offices, memorabilia, recording

equipment, and dozens of computers where dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to digitise the collection. Some of the records are stored in temperaturecontrolled containers because of their age and fragility. Although only a small portion of the collection is on display, mainly in glass cabinets, the walls are adorned with vintage jazz concert posters and other fascinating memorabilia.

Following the tour, we returned to the main room to enjoy a delicious sit-down lunch prepared by the volunteers. We were then treated to a wonderful performance by a four-piece jazz band, which provided the perfect finale to a very enjoyable day.

All too soon it was time to head home, taking with us a greater appreciation of Australia’s jazz heritage and the dedication of the volunteers who work so hard to preserve it.

Sky high for Christmas in July Glenroy Ladies Probus Club embarked on a bus trip to the Sky Restaurant at Mt Dandenong for Christmas in July.

ON a beautiful recent Wednesday the Glenroy Ladies Probus Club embarked on a bus trip to the Sky Restaurant at Mt Dandenong for Christmas in July.

There were 50 ladies on the bus and all enjoyed the views of the valleys covered in clouds before the sun came out. Everyone enjoyed a traditional Christmas meal, enjoying the live entertainment as well as a

little trivia. A thoroughly good time was had by all.

We then gathered on the lookout for a group photo. Our trip was a great success, thanks to Jan, our outings organiser. We also acknowledge the generous Community Grant from the Merri-bek City Council, which helps keep costs down for our members.

Hamilton Men’s Probus celebrates 40 years HAMILTON Men’s Probus Club in Victoria on 4th June celebrated 40 years since its creation. Probus clubs are closely connected with Rotary clubs and are designed for either semi-retired or retired people, Hamilton member and former Probus South Pacific chairman Ken Brand said. “Rotary clubs are about serving the community and giving back as opposed to Probus clubs of fun, friendship and fellowship”, he said.

“Whatever our members fancy we can organise, whether that be a social day or visitation to a workplace, having lunch at a cafe, or hearing from a guest speaker, it’s up to us”.

The first Annual Report was presented on 2 March 1987 recorded 39 active members of the club.

In 1996 the club hosted the district conference and did it again in 2007 in partnership with Hamilton Ladies Probus and Hamilton Combined Probus Club.

In 1988 the club became Incorporated with Consumer Affairs and in 2006 changed its name to Hamilton Men’s Probus Club.

The club continues to meet at the Hamilton Bowling club. Much appreciation is extended to the current and past committees and members of Hamilton Bowling Club for allowing the club to hold its meetings spanning a 40year period.

WHEN life gets tough, sometimes the best thing to do is simply jazz it away.

That’s exactly what members of the East Malvern Combined Probus Club Inc did this month when we carpooled our way to the Australian Jazz Museum, located at 15 Mountain Highway, Wantirna, about 25 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD. The moment we entered the museum, we were transported back to those wonderful nights of our youth, visiting jazz clubs and listening to greats such as Graeme Bell, Judith Durham and the unforgettable Acker Bilk. The only things missing were the duffle coats with their wooden toggles and our desert boots — the essential uniform of any true jazzer in the 1960s. If you loved jazz, you simply didn’t go out without them!

But enough nostalgia — back to the museum.

What a fantastic day we enjoyed. Our group was taken on a guided tour of the museum’s extensive collection, which showcases the rich history of Australian jazz. We saw an incredible range of recordings and memorabilia, including vinyl records (78s and LPs), CDs, tapes, DVDs and cassettes. There were also fascinating collections of photographs, posters and countless other treasures celebrating Australia’s jazz heritage.

Following the tour, we were treated to 45 minutes of outstanding live jazz performed by five very talented — and let’s say “well-seasoned“ — musicians. Their enthusiasm and musicianship had our feet tapping from the first note to the last.

And the hospitality didn’t end there. We were also served a delightful light lunch of sandwiches, sausage rolls and other tasty

The museum is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who are passionate about preserving Australia’s jazz history.

Their enthusiasm was infectious as they shared stories, memories and fascinating anecdotes from the golden years of Australian jazz.

It also reminded us how important volunteers are to our community. The museum receives little government support, so every visit helps keep this remarkable collection alive for future generations to enjoy.

By the end of the day, we all headed home with smiles on our faces, wonderful memories in our minds and a little extra swing in our step. More than a few of us were still tapping our feet to the rhythm of jazz.

Two hills and a gully Michael B Halley, Publicity Officer THE town of Kinglake was named after British historian Alexander William Kinglake and has had a colourful and often warm history. It is a short drive up the Great Dividing Range from Whittlesea, the home of the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea.

The proactive short-tours manager Alessandra Testa organised a visit to the Kinglake Heritage Centre.

Deidre Hawkins of the Kinglake Historical Society offered members an opportunity to visit the centre and absorb an overview of Kinglake and its history. Deidre is a long-time friend of many Probus members and had provided an introduction to the town and its history when her comprehensive story was told at the August 2025 meeting.

C. W. McCall’s song ‘Convoy’ was appropriate as the interested Probus members car-pooled to make the visit, the ten cars navigated the highly potholed road, but all completed the round trip safely.

The Kinglake History is graphically covered in the Heritage Centre and members of the committee gave of their time to serve a delicious morning tea and answer questions.

It was notable that many of the Whittlesea folks had previously lived in the Kinglake environs and had been school mates with our hosts.

Jim Brown, a retired schoolteacher, recalled one of the visitors’ now adult sons as past primary school students. The Kinglake

district stretches for about sixteen kilometres along the ridge from west to east which necessitates three schools.

Gold was discovered in 1861 on Mount Slide to the east of the locality at an area which became known as Mountain Rush. A Mountain Rush Post Office opened on 7 May 1862, but closed in January 1863 as the miners moved to other locations. Kinglake Township was established in 1879 and the Post Office opened on 14 May 1883. There were actually two other post offices in the district.

The current post service is conducted as part of a local shop as is the focus these days by Australia Post and the Government.

But the post office building erected in 1914 has survived better than many other parts of Kinglake. It was possibly once the smallest

Post Office in Australia and has survived three devastating bushfires.

The rip-it-down gang from Australia Post surrendered ownership to the Historical Society and it was moved to the Heritage Centre Grounds in 2023. It took volunteers until May this year to refurbish and furnish the building. A telephonist switchboard was purchased in South Australia to authenticate the Post Office.

Many photographs and stories of the schools and other establishments are laid out for visitors to view and admire. Football and other sporting efforts, together with remembrance of locals who enlisted in two World Wars reinforce the comradeship of what has always been a small community.

Many photographs of early settlers’ homes and properties were shown, reinforcing

the “pioneering spirit” of the Gold Miners, Raspberry Growers, Timber Cutters and later Potato Farmers.

Timber was hauled on a privately-built timber railroad down the mountain to Whittlesea railhead. These timber railroads were common and necessary to allow transport of heavy loads throughout the State as populations increased and building expanded. The motive power was a horse [or bullock] team.

Fires have been a major part of Kinglake History but the recent history is still a sensitive subject and will not be elaborated upon except to mention! Kinglake’s history about fires is true and unembellished.

Visitors can decide to view the specific area dedicated to the memory of the Black Saturday bushfires that killed 173 people in Victoria, 47 in the Kinglake area alone.

Another 414 people were injured. More than 450,000 hectares had burned and 3500 buildings, including more than 500 houses in Kinglake, were destroyed.

The Kinglake Historical Society welcomes inquiries and visitors to the Heritage Centre – contact kinglakehistoricalsociety@gmail.com The program time table took over and, although the morning tea was still digesting, the visitors moved to the Songbird Cafe and Larder and enjoyed sumptuous meals from an extensive menu. Some even partook in desserts! A straw poll of members indicated a more than enjoyable repast from friendly and efficient staff.

All good things come to an end so folk’s memories were packed into their transport to savour on the way home and beyond.

From ocean to the outback

By Ken Claughton, Secretary, Probus Club of Ocean Grove-Surfside Inc TWENTY-THREE members and guests gathered at Southern Cross Station at 7:40am on 26 April to start the Broken Hill trip.

The train was scheduled to depart at 8:30 but it arrived late from Sydney. Our people were waiting on the platform to board but needed to make way for the passengers who had travelled overnight from Sydney. Then the train was cleaned and the seats rotated to face forward. Departure was delayed until 9:00. The start of the delays.

The XPT trains have two engines, one to pull and the other to push. Our pusher wasn’t working. Supposedly, this didn’t affect our top speed, it just took longer to get there. Our time behind schedule continued to increase, especially once we passed Albury. Between Melbourne and Albury there are few stops but after Albury most of the smaller towns have stations and the train stops to pick up or put down as needed. After each of these stops the train was slow reaching top speed.

As our time behind schedule got longer, there was a further delay due to reduced speed limits in the Blue Mountains.

Finally arrived in Sydney at 9:50, the scheduled time was 7:45.

We convened in the Sydney hotel lobby at 5:30am and walked to Sydney Central Station for the train to Broken Hill.

Like most long-distance trains, all passengers have allocated seats. On the trip from Melbourne to Sydney the allocations were perfect, friends seated together, spouses next to each other. However, on all of the journeys commencing in New South Wales seat allocations were jumbled.

Spouses sitting at opposite ends of the train, people allocated all over the place. Not a problem for the intrepid travellers from Ocean Grove-Surfside. At least we had a block of seats, and we were able to re-arrange seating to our satisfaction. This confused the conductress when she came to check her manifest, but it all worked out.

The Broken Hill train departed on time at 6:19. This train was also affected by reduced speed limits in the Blue Mountains, so we fell behind schedule early.

We needed to stop at Orange. This is a strange arrangement. The train takes the main line to Orange station then backs up and takes a by-pass around Orange on the line to Broken Hill. We by-passed the back of Orange but stopped at every railway crossing, even though lights were flashing and cars were banked up. We found out later that the signals around Orange had been updated overnight. The first train through after the update is required to stop at each crossing to make sure that lights are working properly.

This would usually be a goods train, but it was us instead. The time behind schedule is getting greater.

The wildlife kept us occupied. Once we left Bathurst there were plenty of kangaroos, generally one or two individuals, not in large mobs. Feral goats were plentiful, with only one goat a bit too slow getting off the tracks.

I was somewhat surprised by the emus. It was the first time I had seen wild emus, sometimes in mobs of 10 or more. They were usually running away from the train, but the occasional emu seemed to be racing beside the train.

The train made its scheduled stop at Ivanhoe in the centre of NSW. There had been plenty of stops along the way, but this was different. The ‘train manager’ advised that there was a problem with the track and that we would stay in Ivanhoe until it was safe to proceed. We were invited to get off the train until the journey recommenced.

Ivanhoe is little more than a dot on the map (at least as far as we could see). There was an RSL and some houses opposite the station. A kangaroo hopped out of the RSL property and continued down the street, stopping to browse at houses along the way.

A fox crossed from the railway line to run into the yard of a house. Strangely, there was a woman from Jehovah Witnesses on the platform. There were definitely more flies than people. Perhaps there was more to Ivanhoe that we could see. There are mining operations near the town. But we didn’t see much.

Eventually we left Ivanhoe just as it was getting dark. The delays didn’t affect the supplies of food and drink from the cafe bar.

Wine in cute little glasses with lids. Cooked meals for lunch and dinner (surprisingly, the menu on all of the trips was the same).

A variety of snacks that suited every taste.

Despite the delays, cooked meals were on time and the cafe bar remained open.

We arrived at Broken Hill at 9:30, the scheduled time was 7:10 Central Time. Could have been worse, we were told later that they had considered bussing us to Broken Hill but couldn’t get busses.

We stayed at the Ibis Hotel in Broken Hill. Ibis might have large hotels around the world but in Broken Hill the hotel was more of a motel, rooms on ground level and on the first floor. The members of our group were a mixture of abilities. We were a Probus group after all. Some of our less abled members were allocated rooms on the first floor, with a stair the only access. Once again ingenuity prevailed and room allocations were changed to suit abilities.

Not a great start, but we were all bright eyed and bushy tailed when the Broken Hill tours commenced the next day.

That’s another story for another day told by another person.

IN late April, 23 Ocean Grove Surfside Probus members and friends travelled by train from Melbourne to Broken Hill via Sydney.

With a brief overnight stay in Sydney, some very weary travellers finally arrived in Broken Hill, with the train travel taking quite a bit longer than usual.

After the first night’s stay in Broken Hill, that day was spent exploring the city, including a Heritage Tour and a visit to the Living Desert Sculptures at sunset.

The next day a trip to Menindee and Kinchega National Park and some other points of interest along the way.

Then there was a trip to Silverton, the famous ghost town, and enjoyed the fabulous artwork at ‘Taste of the Artback.’

More interesting places to see – including The Royal Flying Doctor Service, the Broken Hill Mining Museum, and the iconic Palace Hotel, made famous by the movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The next few days were busy, with members taking advantage of both

organised activities and free time exploring Broken Hill.

A heritage walk provided a fascinating glimpse into the town’s rich past, a highlight being the iconic Bell’s Milk Bar an authentic step back in time.

The group boarded a coach for a scenic journey via Wilcannia, with the landscape extensively flooded. The journey continued to White Cliffs, where the group experienced a truly unique overnight stay in the town’s famous underground motel, made of solid, natural sandstone rock.

Unfortunately, plans for a mine tour were thwarted by bad weather, with some happily turning to a bit of retail therapy instead.

Back in Broken Hill, the group feasted at the Tipsy Camel Hotel and the Palace Hotel.

After seven nights in Broken Hill and one in White Cliffs, the tired group boarded the train back to Sydney. Some returned to Melbourne the following day, and others stayed on a bit longer, enjoying a lunch cruise.

Making modern Melbourne IN 1901, the six Australian colonies united to form the Commonwealth of Australia which, for the next 26 years, was governed from Melbourne. The optimism of the new century fuelled rapid urban growth.

Grand public buildings were constructed, including the City Court, Melbourne Hospital and iconic Flinders Street Station.

New technologies reshaped the city. Longdistance telephone services connected Melbourne to Sydney in 1907, then Britain in 1918, and the first motor cars roared through city streets. Radio reached our ‘airwaves’ in 1924 and by the late-1920s electricity lit public streets, powered suburban trains and trams, ran factories and more affluent homes.

Melbourne was a low-rise city at this time, the height of buildings limited to 40 metres, the length of the fire brigade’s ladder. And it was a small city. Just under 500,000 people lived within its outer boundaries, with perhaps 68,000 in the city itself. The dramatic changes in Melbourne’s built environment from Federation to modern day, and the agents of change, are explored in Old Treasury Building’s exhibition, Making Modern Melbourne.

Morning at Queenscliff hotel ON a dreary winter’s morning, a cheerful contingent of members from the Combined Probus Club of Belmont Central recently made their way to the picturesque seaside town of Queenscliff for a morning tea outing at the historic Queenscliff Hotel — one of Victoria’s most storied and elegant establishments.

The grand old hotel, which has welcomed guests for well over a century (built in 1888), provided a fitting backdrop for the group’s gathering. However, with Cafe 1888 proving too intimate to accommodate the full party, staff graciously relocated the group to the Boat Bar — a characterful space steeped in maritime heritage and the relaxed charm that Queenscliff is known for.

Far from being a disappointment, the change of venue only added to the occasion.

Members settled in to enjoy their morning tea surrounded by the bar’s nautical ambience, with conversation flowing as freely as ever.

The group then went on to lunch at the quirky Artisan Cafe and Garden, where they enjoyed quality artisan coffee and fresh homemade fare.

It was, by all accounts, a thoroughly enjoyable outing — another fond memory added to the club’s rich calendar of social events.

Belmont Central keeping spirits warm WHAT better way to shake off the winter blues than to embrace the season with open arms. Members of Combined Probus Club of Belmont Central did just that at our June General Meeting.

Furs, woollies, beanies, scarves, hats, and umbrellas were among the items brought along for display, turning the Alfresco room into a warm and colourful showcase of the season’s best. Members mingled and admired one another’s prized pieces, with comments such as “what a beautifully knitted jumper,” “look at those knitted boots,” “all those beanies,” “love that fur,” and “interesting scarves” heard throughout the room.

The occasion also carried a poignant note of remembrance. The meeting fell on the very day of the funeral of Neale Daniher — the beloved AFL coach and tireless advocate for MND research. In his honour, some members wore their Big Freeze beanies, while others made virtual beanie donations to keep his legacy alive. It was a touching tribute woven seamlessly into the fabric of the day’s celebrations.

The venue itself was transformed into a winter wonderland. The Welcome Table was

Wreaths of pine sprigs completed the festive display. The remaining tables carried the wintry theme with silver placemats and matching vases,

lending the whole room an elegant, frosty charm.

All in all, it was an afternoon that did exactly what it set out to do — bring a little warmth, laughter, and winter cheer to the club’s June gathering. The season may be cold outside, but inside the Belmont Central Probus Club, the spirit runs beautifully warm.

Celebrating a Winter Christmas ON a sunny but cool day in July, thirty-five members of the Combined Probus Club of Belmont Central gathered in a private function room at the historic Fyansford Hotel to embrace an old favourite with a seasonal twist: a Christmas in July lunch, complete with all the trimmings of the festive season, minus the summer heat.

The long tables, seating eight to ten guests apiece, were dressed for the occasion with silver tinsel, Christmas serviettes and small bowls of chocolates and sweets scattered along their length, setting a festive scene that belied the mid-year date on the calendar.

True to the spirit of a classic Christmas spread, the mains menu offered a choice of roast pork with crackling and roast vegetables, or fish served with salad and fries. Dessert continued the celebratory theme, with guests choosing between mounds of meringue topped with cream and peppermint crisp, or traditional plum pudding with sauce. Judging by the steady hum of chatter around the room, it was clear everyone was thoroughly enjoying both the company and the meal.

A festive surprise came in the form of a Lucky Dip, with names drawn throughout the afternoon and a lucky few walking away with a gift to mark the occasion.

All in all, it was another very successful club function. A big thank you to Carmel Terrington and Maureen Smith for selecting the venue and arranging the event.

Michael B Halley, Publicity Officer IN the times when take away food entailed taking your saucepan to the local Chinese cafe to fill; a young bride brought her husband and week old daughter to Forest Street, Whittlesea.

So began a 60-year connection with Whittlesea by the Hocking family. Matriarch Sandra was the guest presenter at the July meeting of the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea (Her title was My Life). She still lives in the house that her late husband Ted built, and has the same neighbours who are also members of Probus.

Having moved from Preston then and outer Melbourne suburb the country lifestyle came as somewhat a shock. She walked along the unmade side of the road to the shopping centre in Church Street only to find that the butcher was closed for lunch.

Things have deteriorated since then when there were two grocery stores, but have also improved as the nearest doctor and dentist was quite a distance away.

Sandra accepted the lunch time siestas but was irked by not having a footpath between home and the shops. “So I did what I have always done. I complained to the right people, loudly and persistently, until something was done about it. We got our footpath. I have never once taken it for granted.”

Sandra and her young neighbours settled down to make the best of their new lives.

And make the best of it they have! Over the years Sandra joined every committee that needed a member. School councils, local associations, community groups — if something needed organising or improving her hand was quickly raised. Half a century of membership of the Country Women’s Association is also on her CV. The Hocking children were recognised as being Sandra’s and given the same respect as mum.

Luckily, the statute of limitations has expired or the young Sandra would have an outstanding arrests warrant. The local SP bookmaker lived in her father’s street and he ran a light from their house to the back lane behind so he could have a light on Thursday nights when the trots were being run, so he could take the bets. Two pounds [$2.00] was

agreed as payment for Sandra being lightkeeper [or cockatoo].

When Ted retired they became “grey nomads” and had many interstate trips to the normal and some exotic places. After the sadness of Ted’s death abated Sandra became an international jet-setter.

A three month trip around England, Ireland and Europe.

In 2010 to Canada and the US. In Alaska she rode a bike down a mountain.

2012 was a big one went to Antarctica.

Flew to Peru first and saw the famous Nazca Lines and Machu Picchu, then to Bolivia and Lake Titicaca. From Buenos Aires travelled south to Ushuaia, Argentina.

“Boarded a Russian vessel with Australian tour guides. We crossed the Drake Passage to the Antarctica Peninsula. It was very rough overnight and many were seasick. It was a wonderful trip and I am glad I did it before I got too old”.

“Also made it to Scandinavia, Scotland, Singapore, New Zealand and Cape York.”

In a prepared statement Sandra advised.

“The Uniting Church in Whittlesea had for several years supported a school and orphanage in Zambia, in a town named Kitwe. Three other women and I wished to go and see what our money had built and to see the children at the school. We left in September 2016 for two weeks. We saw the school and the home for girls and their babies. All the money we had sent over the years had been administered well. We were made so welcome and thanked over and over again for our faithfulness in supporting the children.

“Unfortunately on our last day I stepped into a ditch and badly broke my ankle. I spent a month in a hospital in South Africa and was flown home in October. I had many operations on my leg, but I did not have to have it amputated. I thank God for our wonderful doctors. It took some time, and more determination than I care to admit, but I got there.”

Time overtook Sandra’s resume but even those who though they knew her learned something about a most interesting lady.

The saying “still waters run deep” mainly fits Sandra Hocking unless it is to do with Plane Trees or footpaths. She was given a token of appreciation to mark a very interesting presentation.

Two celebrations in one CHIRNSIDE Park Probus Club (Victoria) recently turned one and held a combined celebration for our first birthday and Probus 50th anniversary.

As Probus Australia began in 1976 our theme was a ‘first birthday party’ in the ‘70s’.

Our celebration was skillfully created by Terrie who led our organising sub-committee – Diane, Gilda, Christine, Karen, Kerry, Deb and Cath who were a generous, skilled, detailed and enthusiastic team.

The day consisted of: A room elegantly decked out in Blue and Gold Probus colours with attendees dressed in 70s clothes and/or Blue and Gold.

Party Food and Drinks – morning tea grazing boxes were followed by party food lunch and desserts – with all dietary requirements met so no one went home hungry!

Party Games – Trivia, Name that Song, Minties wrapper tearing competition, 4 Corners, Elimination, Guess that Nursery Rhyme, How many Jellybeans?

Members provided a photo of themselves in the 70s and a Guess Who photo board was on display.

Gifts: Everyone received –a Probus Placement displaying our club activities schedule, a personalised Probus Wine Glass, Goodie bags with Probus Coaster, Balloons, Chocolates, a Probus Gingerbread Cookie and of course – Birthday Cake.

Music and Dancing from the 70s – including Nut Bush and YMCA. $2000 in Raffle Prizes including Special Release Cuvee for Probus’ 50th Anniversary from Chandon.

Finally, a Birthday Cake with candles blown out by three founding members .

An Eclectic Sea of Blue and Gold, 70s Style – Happy Birthday to us (Chirnside Park Probus Club)! (some reflections from Terrie).

As I looked around the room on Tuesday 16 June, 2026, it was truly evident that we had achieved our brief to celebrate our very first major milestone in style – our first birthday party, fortuitously also in the year “Probus in Australia” turns 50.

It all began in 1976 so hence the idea of a 70s theme to take us all back to where we were at, in our lives at that time – teenagers or young adults, where times seemed simpler, lots of fun, and signified by great music, that everyone still loves today – “I’m Living in the Seventies” certainly hit the mark on this occasion along with dancing the Nut Bush and YMCA! Thanks to Steve S (Karen’s husband) who set the right atmosphere with

Congratulations to everyone who partied and enjoyed the event – lots of appreciative comments were justly passed onto the organising sub-committee that I had the privilege of leading – Diane, Gilda, Christine, Karen, Kerry, Deb and Cath – such a generous, skilled, detailed & enthusiastic team.

Thank you to Ellen, our Founding President who, along with the other exec members, suggested having a party and a sub-committee to be formed. We met on three occasions on the lead up and there was an incredible amount of very creative ideas flowing and being fine-tuned. There were of course, lots of calls, texts and emails in between, such was the enthusiasm.

The idea for the 1st birthday, was to reflect a kid’s birthday party, hence the number one cake, party hats, balloons, goody bags, games, cupcakes, celebration gingerbread cookies (Diane), Guess the Jelly Beans (Kerry) and party food like fairy bread, cocktail frankfurts, party pies and sausage rolls. Then we tied in the 70s theme with Retro Party Cocktail toothpick appetizers, Chocolate mousse (thanks Sue

P), meringues, punch etc.

Our awesome team in the kitchen (Diane, Gilda, Deb and Kerry) kept the food service to a tight schedule ably assisted by Karen who took special care of those with dietary needs, to ensure they were also well fed.

Everyone picked up their lovely personalised wine glasses (there is one for every member even if you couldn’t be there) to use on the day, and is a special momento to keep. Diane so generously did all the work on these – her Cricut must be worn out! The drinks were all donated by Gilda and Diane, with Punch from myself (happy to share the simple recipe!).

John W did a great job as Master Judge of the Minties wrapper tearing competition, measuring up all the entries – a great prize of a bottle of Bailey’s for Julie B. Thanks again Diane! The 70s Photo board generated a lot of interest but no one scored very highly on that challenge – surely, we still all look much the same as we did 50 years ago?! John S looked dapper in his uniform, replicating it in what he wore to the party - see the photo at the base of the photo board. All the other games were fun too – lucky seat prizes on each table, 4 Corners, Elimination Game (some really funny moments from the compere, Christine), Guess the Nursery Rhymes (clearly, I sang a lot to my poor children and grandchildren!), two rounds of Trivia, Guess the famous faces of the 70s and guess the song lyrics – phew, we were all on our toes for the day!

We sourced around $2000 worth of raffle (19 prizes) and other prizes as donations for the day, including six bottles of Special Release Cuvee for Probus’ 50th Anniversary from Chandon – some very happy winners!!

We were fortunate to have our Mayor, Richard Higgins, present for drawing the raffles and to judge the best dressed – Steve S stole the win because he was wearing fluffy platform shoes but closely followed by his wife Karen, Diane and Leo with his gorgeous golden locks! Everyone made such an effort to dress for the Blue/gold or 70s theme so all were winners really.

Richard also chose the best table team name and was won by “Goldfingers” as they had incorporated ‘body art’ – gold nail polish applied at the table. Other notable names from my distant memory were “Golden Oldies” and “I’m living in the 70s”.

The day finished up with the ceremonial singing happy birthday to us, blowing out the candles by Foundation Vice President (Helen with her stunning hair style), and the Foundation Secretary and Treasurer Duo (Leo and Leveda) before then cutting the cake and hopefully making some good wishes for us all!

Thanks for everyone’s help in packing up and to John S who managed to play Tetris in the boot of my car to get things home. The takeaways were numerous and for those who couldn’t make it we have kept you a delicious gingerbread cookie, goody bag with Probus coaster, a lovely placemat, Probus cupcake (currently frozen) and your personalised glass to collect when we next see you. And lastly thanks to Andrew for his photography skills and uploading them so quickly to our Facebook Page. Here are a few I had time to snap. We certainly belong to a great new club… roll on the coming years of fun and frivolity!

Members strike up a day of fun PAKENHAM East and Pakenham Central Probus Clubs enjoyed an inaugural joint ten pin bowling day on Wednesday 22 July.

Members hit the lanes for a morning filled with laughter, friendly rivalry and plenty of strikes!

The non-competitive event gave participants the perfect opportunity to socialise, support one another and enjoy some gentle exercise in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

“It’s not about the score - it’s about the smiles, the conversations and the connections we make,“ said one organiser.

Whether it was a strike, a spare or

simply having a go, everyone walked away a winner.

Events like this reflect the close relationship of the two Pakenham Clubs who share Probus’ vision of fun, friends and fellowship and the importance of staying active, engaged and connected within our local community. A big thank you to everyone who came along to bowl and to support the bowlers.

Here’s to more shared moments, stronger communities and many more good times ahead!
