The third suggested upgrades to leisure spaces in Taylor Park and Elephant Walk, increasing connections between Torquay’s “history and natural environment” and more pedestrian and bike paths.

Submissions on C66 closed last week. The proposed amendment seeks to set Torquay’s western town boundary at Duffields Rd, preventing development in Spring Creek valley.

A council spokesperson said a “planning report” on C66 would go before councillors in April.

TAFE cash tap GORDON Institute of TAFE’s chief is confident he can “tap” a new $200 million State Government funding package.

Grant Sutherland said Gordon was “well-positioned” to secure funding under the Government’s competitive tender scheme.

New Premier Denis Napthine announced the funding for Victorian TAFEs this week following cuts to the sector last year under predecessor Ted Baillieu.

Mr Sutherland said the new scheme had a key focus on innovation, which was one of Gordon’s “strategic priorities”.

“Gordon is in a very strong

position and opportunities to tap into the $200 million further adds to this strength.”

Mr Sutherland said the institution “took a long-term approach” to last year’s cuts so Gordon could have a “financially sustainable future”.

The institute had sold assets including its Fenwick St church facility so Gordon could assist socially disadvantaged students with funding, he said.

The institute also cut staff and courses in response to the funding reduction.

Australian Education Union Geelong branch spokeswoman Rosemary Crowe said the new funding was a “positive start” for

Mr Napthine as Premier but only a “small step”in repairing the damage of last year’s cuts.

Ms Crowe said the new funding would go toward technology and innovation projects rather than individual institutions’ operational costs.

She said the funding would fail to re-employ 2000 Australian teachers who lost their jobs due to last year’s cuts, while many contract teaching positions would never be renewed.

“Significant fee increases” had also stopped many students’ plans to study at TAFE, Ms Crowe said.

“These funds are not going to help those students.”

‘Big nights’ in Geelong keep city’s police busy

By MICHELLE HERBISON A LONG-WEEKEND police operation in central Geelong dealt with about 70 offences over two “big” nights, according to the highway patrol.

Sergeant Darren Murphy said an increase in people around central Geelong on Saturday and Sunday nights led to police detecting more offences “than expected”.

“Members issued mainly on-thespot fines for varying offences from speeding, (driving while using) mobile phones, pedestrians walking against the lights, parking offences, seatbelts - anything and everything.

“We had two highway patrol units working night shift over the weekend in relation to Operation Maxi. It was a pretty big weekend.”

Police officers were involved in three pursuits of motorbikes, two with the same rider on Surf Coast Hwy, which was terminated due to safety concerns.

Sgt Murphy said the increased police presence in central Geelong on the weekend was the start of a crackdown on pedestrian offences at night.

“Over the past two years we’ve had a number of people who’ve been clipped by cars when crossing the road at the wrong time.”

Anyone who crossed a road against

a red pedestrian light or at an angle could face fines, he warned.

Sgt Aaron Riches said licensees would face $1690 fines after police found three people drunk on licensed premises.

Police arrested 14 people for public drunkenness or drunk and disorderly conduct and issued five penalty notices for riotous behaviour or unlawful fighting, he said.

“Three will be banned from the CBD.” A security guard was also allegedly assaulted, Sgt Riches said.

“A 25 year-old female from Norlane who was known to the guard was refused entry and she attacked him. He

had several lacerations from the attack on his face and neck.

“She was interviewed for recklessly causing serious injury and released on summons.”

City of Greater Geelong bylaws officers shadowed police over the two nights, issuing 40 penalty notices for parking and amenity issues including open alcohol containers, parking around hospitals, licensed venues and shopping centres and in disabled zones.

“I don’t think they’ve had those sort of numbers (previously). I think they were quite surprised at the ease in which they were able to detect offences,” Sgt Riches said.

Petrol slug GEELONG motorists have been slugged up to 17 cents a litre more for fuel than their regional counterparts at nearby Ballarat.

Bowser prices in Geelong this week reached 154.9 cents for unleaded petrol compared to 137.5 in Ballarat, leaving Geelong’s motorists paying $10 to $12 more to fill their tanks.

Fresh flush CORANGAMITE Catchment Management Authority has begun releasing 360 million litres of reservoir water into the Moorabool River over 17 days.

The organisation said the “fresh flow” would improve water quality in habitat pools, increase fish movement and create additional habitat for macroinvertebrates.

Creative festival A TWO-DAY arts festival that began in New York will come to Geelong on 23 to 24 March, council has confirmed.

Council said Figment Geelong would offer free, inclusive and participatory art with the aim of “removing the barriers of museum and art gallery walls”.

Quiksilver jobs ‘safe’ amid lacklustre overseas trade

By CHERIE DONNELLAN TORQUAY surfwear giant Quiksilver has posted overseas revenue losses of up to nine per cent in a regional breakdown of quarterly earnings, according to a new report.

The bleak results for the brand followed neighbouring Torquay brand Rip Curl last week abandoning its plans to sell due to a “cesspit” market.

Other surf bands are also struggling, with Queensland-based surfwear firm Billabong rejecting US private equity firms’ takeover bid in September amid foundering sales and store closures.

Quiksilver posted that its Americas net revenue fell nine per cent to $186 million from $205 million.

The company’s global brand lost $US13 million in revenue, while its women’s label, Roxy, lost $US9 million.

Chief financial officer Richard Shields blamed the company’s “wholesale channel” for up to 85 per cent of both brands’ revenue losses.

Recently appointed chief executive Andrew Mooney told market analysts the company would not discount price points in Australia, believing the Australian market was “on track”.

A spokesperson for Quiksilver’s international office in Torquay said the company’s 200 jobs in the town were safe despite the latest results.

‘Get a job’, train traveller told

A V/LINE conductor snatched a Geelong train passenger’s ticket and told him to “get a job” after he forgot his concession card, according to a witness.

University student Francisco Rodriguez said he filed official complaints with V/Line and Public Transport Vic-

toria (PTV) after witnessing the “appalling” behaviour last week.

“The conductor was extremely arrogant and seemed to think he was superior to anyone with a concession.”

Mr Rodriguez said the male conductor was checking for tickets when he found that the passenger had a ticket but no concession card.

Festival seeks state cash for highland fling

By MICHELLE HERBISON PORTARLINGTON’S National Celtic Festival is seeking State Government funding of a Celtic exchange program for young musicians, according to its director.

Una McAlinden said she planned to work with Scottish organisation Feis Ros to send about six to eight young Australians to Scotland for a traditional music immersion.

“It will be a two-year project. We’ll bring out here the CEO and artistic director of Feis Rois from the highlands of Scotland for an expanded

workshop program,” she said.

“Then the second year the Australians will go over to perform with the Scottish.”

Ms McAlinden said program would be a “pilot project for other countries” aimed at sustaining traditional culture in Australia.

“We’re so far removed. You can’t just go down to the local pub and be steeped in tradition.”

Ms McAlinden said the National Celtic Festival had applied for numerous State Government grants to facilitate the festival’s growth.

A new marquee and a redesign of the festival’s layout would create more space for free attractions.

“We’re looking at bringing more to the site for people who want to come and have a look rather than committing to buying a ticket. Celtic martial arts and historical re-enactment groups need a bit of room,” Ms McAlinden said.

Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos in parliament last month urged Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher to “consider a favourable response” to the festival’s grant submissions.

A FRED Williams interpretation of the You Yangs is tipped to fetch as much as $2 million at auction later this year.

Part of a renowned Grundy Collection to go under the hammer of international auctioneer Bonhams, the 1963 painting You Yangs Landscape 1 is an abstract expression of dark and light tones peppered across an ochre plainscape.

Bonhams tips the painting to draw the highest price from the 90-piece collection, which could yield $20 million in total.

Williams, who died in 1982, is considered one of Australia’s greatest artists. His You Yangs series, painted at the peak of his career, show trees and other features as if observed from the above.

Geelong Gallery director Geoffrey Edwards said Williams’ landscapes were abstract but still effective representations of the landscape.

“He makes you think. His paintings are happy pictorial puzzles,” he said. “The more you look into it, as anyone who’s looked out an aircraft window and seen a big Fred Williams painting, it’s so clever.”

Trial hope high

By CHERIE DONNELLAN A DEAKIN University medical researcher has piloted a worldfirst trial using a naturally-based supplement to decrease bipolar depression symptoms.

Professor Michael Berk said he hoped the study into naturally-based drug N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) would prove it worked as an antidepressant for bipolar sufferers on its own or when combined with other energy-boosting natural drugs.

Prof Berk said the study would take “about three years” to complete but the drug could begin treating bipolar sufferers immedi-

ately if the trial was successful.

The drug was already available at chemists and health food stores and included in some preworkout supplement powders and vitamins, he said.

Positive findings could revolutionise treatment because existing therapies “don’t work for everybody”.

“Lithium is the oldest and effective treatment at present and there are others including lamotrigine which is used to treat epilepsy but isn’t covered by (Federal Government’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme),” Prof Berk said.

“A-typical anti-psychotics are also available but while these medicines work, they don’t all work specifically for bipolar.”

Corio bipolar sufferer Nicci Wall applauded the trial for assessing the merit of natural-based medications.

“I’d be quite excited to have access to a more natural treatment regime.”

Ms Wall encouraged other sufferers to participate in the trial so researchers could begin testing.

“I’ve found (previous studies) to be a very calming, non-pressured environment. My wellbeing was as important as the results.”

Mr Senia suggested that council should now consider withdrawing its financial support of bodies like Committee for Geelong, councils alliance group G21 and State Government’s Places Victoria to avoid doubling up.

The costs of Enterprise Geelong would be much higher than just its $250,000-a-year executive director role, he warned.

figure will be a lot more, to be funded by ratepayers.”

Mr Senia questioned the “realisable value” of Enterprise Geelong compared to its overall cost.

“The role of council is to facilitate and assist enterprise in and to Geelong in conjunction with others. The infrastructure already exists to do this and it need not

cost the ratepayers an additional cent,” Mr Senia said.

“What appears to be missing is cohesion and common sense.”

A report to council said Enterprise Geelong would absorb council’s existing economic development unit and its $879,037 budget.

Enterprise Geelong would need an additional $266,510 in funding, for a total budget of $1,145,547.

“On-going recurrent funding will be considered in the 2013/2014 budget process. This indicative budget does not include any office fit-out that may be required,” the report said.

GEELONG chippie Joe Mancor can’t understand why he can’t find work in Western Australia’s big mining projects yet 457 visa-holders without trade papers can.

He’s been rejected at sites and by companies and agencies from Port Hedland to Mount Tom Price and Karratha without getting to first base while tradesmen are supposedly in short supply.

“People are telling us it looks like there’s lots of work going on but there’s not. I’m sick of people telling us there’s a boom when there’s people out of work everywhere,’’ Mr Mancor told the Independent from Onslow, Western Australia.

The 32-year-old carpenter said overseas workers on 457 visas, including many Irish and Filipinos, were picking up jobs on low pay rates but faced problems with excessive rentals and costs in mining towns.

“I walked onto a high-rise site in Karratha and asked for a job. When I asked where to leave my resume they said ‘You got a visa?’

“The pay was flat-rate casual for 10 hour days in the heat and sun of $31.20 an hour. A house costs $1500 a week to rent in Karratha – just a bedroom costs $500.’’

Mr Mancor moved to the west with the ambition of earning enough money to buy a house and set up a family but said the refusal of big mining companies to hire Australian tradesmen had cruelled his dream.

He claimed thousands of qualified Australian workers were losing jobs as construction and mining industries pursued cheap overseas labour.

“A lot of people don’t know what’s going on. I’ve spent nine months in this area and a lot of people just don’t realise the problems.”

GONE WEST: Joe Mancor says 457 visaholders are costing Australians jobs.

Mancor, slammed the Liberal and Labor parties for being “terrified’’ of upsetting mining companies and showing no concern for workers.

“These work visas are just a way of trying to get cheap, compliant labour,” he said.

An ACTU campaign against treatment of 457 migrant workers has described their working conditions as “tantamount to slavery”.

Geelong Trades Hall secretary Tim Gooden said 457 visas were “inherently not much chop”.

“We support skilled migration but on a permanent basis, not under the 457 scheme because that’s where people are most likely to be abused because they’re least likely to speak up.”

This program is especially focused on helping resource conscious businesses and their supply chains, in the Barwon Region, who are significant consumers of materials, energy and water with associated waste streams and greenhouse gas emissions.

Woolies’ Danks buys Hardings COMPETITION in Geelong’s hardware sector has tightened, with Woolworths-owned Danks buying a majority stake in Geelong West’s Hardings store.

The Gordon St Hardings Hardware store, known for its trade supplies, will be rebranded as Danks.

Danks is part of a joint venture between Woolworths and American retail giant Lowes in a roll-out of Masters hardware and home improvement stores.

The hardware supplier will take a 60 per cent interest in Hardings, taking over six sites in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Geelong.

A statement from Danks said all employees, including senior management, would remain in the business.

“As a specialist trade-based supplier to the building industry, Hardings Hardware is an ideal fit with our strategic trade model,” Danks said.

“Hardings are a successful family-owned business with a 50year reputation in the trade sector.

We’re pleased to have an opportunity to build on the combined strengths of Hardings and Danks in continuing to service the needs of trade customers.”

Cotton On hubs push

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG retail success story Cotton On will establish international regional hubs as it aims for 2000 stores, its CEO Peter Johnson told a business breakfast.

And he saw no reason the company’s recent phenomenal growth could not continue even further.

“We are addicted to growth,” Mr Johnson said.

He revealed that the company would undergo a major reorganisation to regionalise its international operations while retaining global head-office status in Geelong.

Regional hubs would be established around the world where much of the execution phase of expansion would be moved into the market in the next 12 to 18 months, he said.

“All the decisions about what happens in each store are made in our head office in Geelong but that’s not a model that’s going to get us to 2000 stores.

“We need to take our decisionmaking to the market. We’re also hiring local retail experts in the countries we are expanding to.

“It’s an evolution for the business but it is part of the first truly global strategy for Cotton On.” Mr Johnson said Cotton On would soon open stores in Brazil, Qatar and Indonesia, adding to shops already established in New Zealand, USA,

“We’ve learned a lot of lessons since our first international stores opened in New Zealand a few years ago,” he told the Geelong Business Network breakfast.

Mr Johnson said the company attacked the challenges of international retailers rolling out stores in Australia and online shopping with aggressive growth. This relied on staff learning and development, including a soon-tobe established “Cotton On Uni”.

“This will be a three-or-four-year process where employers will go through and gain a qualification, all on the job and in partnership with training organisations in the region.”

Mr Johnson said a superstore concept had breathed new life into expansion plans, creating a single outlet with all Cotton On brands under one roof and doubling sales.

Traffic was now “moving safely and efficiently” on the “vital link”, Mr Katos said.

He suggested more improvements were in the pipeline for Pioneer Rd. “I look forward to further improvements to the traffic flow in due course.”

The project built an additional right-hand turn lane from the highway to Pioneer Rd, added bus and bicycle lanes, improved pedestrian crossings and synchronised traffic lights.

THE region’s welfare agencies have reaped a financial windfall from a sports event on Geelong’s waterfront last month.

The third annual Geelong Multisport Festival raised $52,000 for Give Where You Live, which provides financial support to more than 70 welfare organisations.

Stamp appeal A STAMP is the only object that gains value because it has something wrong.

And that’s just part of the fascination for the keen collectors in Geelong Philatelic Society.

“Errors, freaks and oddities are sought out by collectors,” secretary Jenny Colman said.

“It’s like a treasure hunt.”

And the collectors have plenty to keep them interested, especially in the early days of postage and stamp printing when techniques were less sophisticated.

“Human error, different printers, different paper, different watermarks and changes in perforations were all among the mistakes,” Jenny said.

“Interest was generated as stamps became collectors’ items and more oddities and errors were discovered. As a result, some stamps became rarer than others.”

But the good philatelists of Geelong say stamp collecting is about more than just stamps. It’s as much about the history of postage because the hobby provides insights into the growth of letter-

writing as society changed.

“It’s a form of collecting geography and history, not just of Australia but countries right around the world,” club member Charles Cameron explained.

Geelong had its first official post markers in 1842 when it was still part of New South Wales.

The philatelic society formed in 1931. Stamps had no intrinsic value at first, being simply a userpays system.

Women started collecting them for use in decoupage, Jenny said. “But stamps began to have wider uses, such as what we call Cinderella stamps, the poor relation. They are non-official stickers representing an event or function, like food stamps or tax stamps.

“Often stamps had a commercial rather than official postal function, just a label to raise

funds, with no real face value.”

Australia Post was among the first postal services to offer stamps specifically for collectors, with first-day covers contributing to the boom time of stamps in the late 1960s and 1970s.

“It was like a stamp bubble, when prices were inflated, and some obscene prices were paid for ordinary stamps,” Charles reflected. “There were dealers everywhere and shops were selling little mixed packages of stamps to entice collectors.

“Air travel made a huge difference to the golden age of letters and people would get letters from all over the world often with strange or exotic-looking stamps.

“It has all settled down now but the top end of stamp collecting will always be expensive, with rare stamps changing hands for millions of dollars.”

The society regularly meets at Geelong West’s Virginia Todd Centre, featuring collectors with exotic and rare collections as guest speakers.

In addition, Dr Napthine has a proven track record of ministerial decisiveness and the capacity to make the correct call. He unequivocally supported the jumps racing industry when things looked dicey and also made the common sense decision for Western Port to become the state’s future major deepwater container port.

The harsh reality, though, as to whether he sinks or swims nevertheless will depend on whether and without compromise he can provide teachers and support workers with their AEU log of claims and sort out, from the minister down, Victoria Police’s systemic governance issues.

be found. It is to be hoped that most responsible parents would not accept such behaviour and maybe arrange for the boys to find jobs so they could pay for some of the damages at least.

Weary of fluoridation WHY is Federal Government giving Tasmania $12 million for a dental crisis when it has been fluoridated for 50 years.

A Tasmanian newspaper in 2009 reported that 11.2 per cent of Tasmanians aged 25 to 44 years - all of whom were born after the commencement of fluoridation – wore dentures, almost double the national average. Forty-one per cent of Tasmanians aged 45 to 64 years had dentures, 12 per cent above the national average.

In 2009 Medicare Australia sent 38,100 vouchers worth $153.45 each for Tasmanian teenagers to have preventative dental health check-ups. Fluoridation is a total fraud and should be stopped immediately.

Our own Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop said fluoridation-related illnesses could take up to 20 years to appear. He was a great man, very much against fluoridation.

Jane blows in for show CLASSICAL flautist Jane Rutter wants to show kids that classical music “doesn’t have to be boring”.

The world-renowned musician combines poetry and theatrical elements in her show An Australian in Paris, hoping to inspire young players and others less familiar with the genre.

Rutter infuses her show with French poetry and anecdotes from her early experiences in Paris, now her “second home” after Sydney.

“When I was a young woman I lived in Paris for three or four years to study. I was quite often lonely and would walk around the neighbourhood.

“Sometimes I’d go to a local café and imagine I was going to have coffee with Picasso, Cole and Linda Porter, Ernest Hemingway or Gertrude Stein,” Rutter mused.

“In my imagination I spent quite a lot of time breathing in that history.”

Rutter said she studied with two of the world’s greatest flute players, Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion, who believed in “music without barriers”.

“It was not considered in any way damaging to be playing a classical concerto one

night and appearing on the Muppet Show with Miss Piggy the next. But my teachers were very anti-dumbing down.

“There’s no need to have drum and disco beats underneath Mozart for children or audiences who haven’t been exposed to tertiary-level music education.”

Rutter considered her flute a part of herself, treating her music as a “voice” and incorporating dance and movement.

“I try to portray that I’m really a singer, just singing through my flute. Some things I do in the show are slightly choreographed but I don’t beat myself up if I don’t get the right step in the can-can,” she laughed.

A public concert on Monday at Geelong Grammar School will feature Poulenc, Gershwin, Debussy, Ravel’s Bolero, Cole Porter’s I Love Paris, Piaf’s La vie en rose, Charles Aznavour’s She, Le CanCan and other “luscious French favourites”, Rutter said.

GEELONG’S Mr Paparazzi has launched a “ridiculously funky” new clubbing room at his Home House nightclub.

Darryn Lyons said The Backyard had a “crazy” mixture of fake lawn flooring, a 3D Chesterfield sofa feature spanning one wall and a glowin-the-dark ceiling.

“I call it the glowin-the-dark Sistine Chapel of Geelong,” he said.

The ceiling feature was decorated by using syringes to achieve the desired look.

“The ceiling has a combination of lots of pink, green and Tiffany blue – it’s like my Darryn Lyons hair.”

Lyons said the room also featured a Hollywood-style make-up area near the bar.

“I hope girls love it.”

Lyons says the “radical” and colourful design would “bring a new vibrancy” to the club and make it “a lot more fun”.

“We keep renovating different parts of the place to keep it ridiculously funky and provide a way-out party place for Geelong.”

Home House officially opened The Backyard last Saturday.

Patrons were treated to various combinations of Captain Morgans’ spiced rum cocktails while dancing to DJ Keith’s tunes.

LOSING a camera to a thief in South America was just another unexpected experience for Evermore singerguitarist Jon Hume as he travelled the world seeking musical inspiration.

Hume laughed as he recalled to the Independent how his brother and band mate Pete had the camera stolen from his hands after removing it from a cautious friend’s neck.

“Our friend was capturing our whole experience on film and always had the camera around his neck. Pete took it from him and then this guy on a bicycle rode past, put his hand out and snatched the camera.”

Hume said he could see the funny side of the incident now but the boys were upset to lose some “incredible photos” of Buenos Aires that they were going to use to showcase on their latest album, Follow The Sun. Hume described the album as having a “very optimistic outlook” capturing “different flavours” of cities the band visited while writing and recording.

“We wanted to get out of our comfort zone and find fresh experiences.

“The album had different flavours that we probably wouldn’t have had [in the songs] if we didn’t travel.”

But Hume admitted he didn’t need international inspiration for his “favourite track”, Hey My Love.

“I wrote it for my wife on ukulele, walking around the house,” he said cheerfully.

“It’s a cool little track and I’m pretty excited that we’re making a film clip for it at the moment.”

Hume revealed the film clip would include fans’ Instagram photos of things they loved if they wrote “#heymylove” in their photo’s caption.

“It’s going to be so cool. It really suits the song.”

Hume said the third member of Evermore, brother and drummer Dann, would be unavailable for the band’s gig at Geelong’s Yarra Hotel on 25 April because he was a “studio hermit”.

“I probably shouldn’t make that joke – he’s just really focused on musical production right now.”

But he promised Evermore’s live performance would remain close to their recordings.

“Obviously we have to change our songs a little bit to suit live performing but it’ll still be very us.”

Brewster said it was “an amazing experience” having talented bassist son, Sam, 30, step into Bailey’s role.

“Life’s funny the cards it deals you. Sam and Chris formed quite a bond and he got a bit of advice from the master. Now Rick and I are the old guys but we’re ok because we’re the ones with guitars,” Brewster laughed.

The Angels would enjoy a “balanced life” in the next few months of touring, flying home between gigs, he said.

“It makes the whole thing really enjoyable when we can still have a home-life.”

AUSSIE rock icon The Angels are on a second wind with new front-man Dave Gleeson blowing away fans new and old.

Founding member and guitarist John Brewster told the Independent The Angels were in the midst of finishing another album on the back of a successful first record featuring Gleeson, Take it to the Streets.

New FM radio hit song Waiting for the Sun was just one of many the new line-up had written collaboratively, Brewster said.

“It’s unbelievable. This band feels like a real team.

“Everybody’s loving it and Dave’s going down great.”

Brewster said The Angels’ June 15 gig at Geelong Performing Arts Centre would feature the band’s greatest hits accumulated since its 1970s inception.

“We love doing those old songs that seem to have stood the test of time.”

Brewster mused on the enduring popularity of The Angels’ guitar-driven rock.

“We play like young guys and we mean it. I always think of an Angels’ show as a celebration between band and audience of the repertoire.”

Brewster and guitarist brother Rick remain the band’s only founding members since bassist Chris Bailey’s recent cancer diagnosis, adding to the distress of

ST JOSEPH’S College Geelong students have gathered at Ocean Grove Beach to help people with disabilities to experience the joy of surfing.

The students, from various year levels, were among a group of 220 volunteers to run the Disabled Surfing Association event.

The students worked together in teams to enable 41 participants to enjoy the ideal weather and tide conditions.

The activity put many smiles on all the participants’ and their carers’ faces throughout the morning.

Participants came from near and far for the opportunity to have a fun and safe surf.

The college thanked Mark Turner for organising the students to attend the event, in which they lived up to the association’s motto of ‘Surfers helping surfers’.

St Joseph’s College Geelong will host an open day on Friday, 19 April.

The college will also take enrolments for year seven students in 2014 during the day.

Registration for the day is open online at sjc.vic.edu.au.

Volunteer fun for Joeys’ boys

NISSAN Motor Co., Ltd. has kicked off a new era for Nismo, confirming it as Nissan’s exclusive global performance road car and motorsport brand and officially opening the new Nismo global headquarters and development centre in Yokohama, Japan.

Nismo is already well-known to motorsports and performance car enthusiasts in Japan and to millions of global gaming enthusiasts.

Now, Nismo is poised for accelerated global impact, enhancing Nissan’s reputation for innovation and excitement with a new line-up of sporty Nissan road cars.

In a special ceremony, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn declared the new headquarters open and explained how Nismo will play an even more prominent role for the company’s performance car and motorsport activities.

“Nismo will bring new excitement to the Nissan portfolio with a broader range of affordable and innovative performance models for more markets and more people,” Mr Ghosn said.

“Whether it’s a small car or a sports car, if it’s wearing the Nismo badge it offers something special quality, functionality, and efficiency, with Nismo’s distinctive styling, sporty handling and dynamic performance capabilities.”

The first new Nissan road car to get the Nismo treatment, the Juke Nismo, is already on sale in Europe and Japan and launches in the U.S. in the second quarter of this year.

A new version of the 370Z Nismo for European markets is the next Nismo road car, which made its world debut earlier this month and builds on the platform of Nissan’s most popular and accessible sports car.

Nissan is promising a rapid pace of introduction of more Nismo models, at least one model every year during the Nissan Power88 period, encompassing the breadth of the Nissan road car range.

This will include the flagship of Nissan’s performance and technology, the GT-R. “It would be unthinkable for us to develop a range of Nismo road cars without including the GT-R,” Mr Ghosn said.

“The standard road car is a global supercar and the GT-R’s performance on track reflects the passion and talents of the Nismo team. The GT-R Nismo will be special and I can’t wait to drive it.”

Nissan has invested in an entirely new facility for Nismo’s operations, redeveloping a former production site to give it the resources for expanding beyond motorsport engineering to encompass performance road car development alongside Nissan.

The new headquarters facility allows the Nismo team to be co-located in one place, bringing together the functional areas for Nismo’s key activities and technical and competition expertise under one roof.

The 180-strong team is now located inside Nissan’s Powertrain Engineering complex.

The workshop, engine shop, rooms for fabrication, grinding and carbon composite processes are consolidated into the same floor space along with the parts warehouse.

A new larger showroom allows up to eight vehicles to be displayed, while the retail area is now almost twice the size of the previous store in the Omori factory.

“This is a great move for Nismo as we can now shift gears to operate more efficiently and expand the brand globally,” explained Nismo president, Shoichi Miyatani.

“Nismo is a key element in Nissan’s future global road car and motorsports strategy and we will quickly establish it as Nissan’s exclusive performance brand,” Mr Miyatani said.

Cats players ‘like Pies’ cricket Jim Timberlake

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN COLLINGWOOD and Geelong are in similar positions with a list of older experienced players being challenged by young up and comers, according to Magpies coach Nathan Buckley.

The two powerhouses of the competition meet in a practice match at Simonds Stadium at the unusual time of 4pm this Friday.

“It’s an opportunity to take on a Geelong side that’s young and full of running at the moment,” Buckley said.

“Obviously they have experience as well. They’re not in a dissimilar position to where we are, list-wise. That will be a good challenge for us.”

Geelong has a number of first and second-year players who have impressed during the NAB Cup preseason, with forward Jordan Murdoch the latest to put up his hand.

Both clubs signalled their intention to have close to full-strength sides for the final hit-out before Easter’s first home-and-away round.

Buckley said Collingwood was also dealing with a young squad.

“It’s an opportunity to challenge and test them and see where they are and what they are capable of.

“We feel like we got some young players exposed last year ahead of their time and with another pre-season

under their belt, they are pretty hungry to push their way into our best side.

There’s quite a bit of depth there and it’s encouraging to see competition for spots exists.”

Murdoch admitted taking some time to get used to the conditions for the Cats’ game against North Melbourne last weekend.

“I haven’t played in conditions like that before. We’ve been lucky, we haven’t even trained in those conditions. (But) I felt better after half time.

I don’t know how that works, we had bit of a break and all the food starts to kick in.

“I felt good finishing off. I’m playing forward the majority of the time, taking steps towards improving and building on last year.”

Geelong finished the NAB Cup with four wins and one loss, tied for second place in the standings and missing out on playing in the final by percentage.

Geelong assistant coach Shane O’Bree echoed Buckley.

“The younger players all pre-season have really put their hands up and been given an opportunity,” O’Bree said.

“It’s going to be tough for spots come round one. It’s the environment we want to create with the young guys pushing the older guys along.”

Snapper rock as fair weather friends of local anglers On the

FANTASTIC weather produced some memorable captures in fresh and saltwater over the long weekend.

Corio Bay produced good numbers of snapper, with Peter West landing two of the best from the rocks at North Shore. Peter fished late into the night for two fish over 3kg and losing a few on the rock ledge in close.

Geoffrey Walsh caught snapper on soft plastics in the shallows off the quarries. Most averaged around 35cms but Geoffrey’s biggest was 3.1kg.

Nathan Harris also fished the area with soft plastics for an impressive catch of pike, snapper, flathead and squid all taken on Gulp turtleback worms in the Pumpkin Green colour.

Bait anglers caught snapper to 55cm on the outer edge of the Hermsley spoil grounds, with all the best action early.

Aaron Ball’s liberal berley trail inside Swan Bay attracted garfish and a beautiful 2kg-plus flathead. Garry McLean fished inside Edwards Point in less than 1m of water where he managed 10 squid around 900g.

Danny Wallis was surprised to get onto a patch of silver trevally just outside the Queenscliff cut. He used pilchard fillets to land nine fish.

Todd Cummings found trevally in the cut, catching over a dozen in two outings as the tide started running off from high.

Offshore anglers caught a variety of species, with sharks common. Mick Allardyce caught a good-size thresher on lure off Apollo Bay but said it was dwarfed by a bronze whaler that followed it up.

Kingfish were taken offshore from a number of locations, with the best reports from Barwon Heads where the kings averaged around 6kg to 8kg and

were taken mainly on jigs. This same area also produced plenty of salmon over 2kg. The odd kingfish was taken from The Rip but the salmon really kept many boats busy. Most of the salmon were 1kg to 2kg but the odd fish nudged 3kg.

Hot weather drove huge numbers of swimmers into the Barwon River estuary, limiting opportunities. However, anglers who fished late in the evening and after dark caught quality bream to 1.3kg on fresh baits.

Surf anglers again caught salmon from the rock platforms between Lorne and Apollo Bay. Clean water on the deep-water rock ledges was essential, with a high tide also important.

Quality trout were still caught by anglers fishing the likes of Lake Purrumbete. Stephen Jennings returned from a trolling session at Lake Tooliorook, near Lismore, where he worked his Tassie Devils. He managed four nice rainbows all around 1.3kg and a magnificent specimen of 2.4kg.

Danny Lewis fished the upperreaches of the Barwon River where he caught plenty of redfin using a Mepps spinner in fluorescent pattern.

GEELONG Cricket Club’s premier league season came to a grinding halt last Saturday.

While the Cats’ last game was a loss to Northcote, Damian Shanahan’s young squad took giant strides this season and can be proud of its efforts.

The likes of Jake Reed and Hayden Butterworth improved their games out of sight, while veterans such as Marc Carson and Luke Muller were guiding lights for their younger team mates.

The thirds and fourths have qualified for finals.

In Geelong Cricket Association, six became four as Leopold and North Geelong bowed out last weekend.

This weekend South Barwon plays Grovedale at Winter Reserve, the venue for their memorable grand final four seasons ago.

South Barwon dug deep in an amazing game last week, defeating Leopold by just three runs.

The Swans only made 146 and at the end of play on Saturday Leopold had reached 1/90.

But on Sunday a choke of epic proportions took place, as the Lions capitulated to lose 9/50 and fall three runs short.

Grovedale, on the other hand, went down to Geelong West in a close game. To be fair to the Tigers, the game was a virtual dead rubber for the last two hours as both sides were assured of advancing.

While South Barwon got out of jail last week, it won’t want to give the finals-hardened Grovedale team the same sort of sniff because the Swans won’t be so lucky this time.

In the other semi-final, East Belmont plays Geelong West at Stinton Oval, interestingly the fourth time in a row the two have met in a semi-final.

Geelong West won all of those previous encounters, although, on form, the Lions will go in favourites this time around and look too strong.

In division two, both finals to be played this weekend look like absolute classics.

Murgheboluc won through against Thomson last week, while Newcomb & District advanced despite losing to Manifold Heights.

They play at Marshall this weekend and, while Mugheboluc has been ultra-consistent all season, the Dinos have been up and down all the way through.

This game will be decided by whichever Newcomb & District side turns up to play.

In the other semi, St Albans Breakwater plays Manifold Heights, both sides going in on the back of impressive wins last week.

While the Saints best is good enough, their inconsistency is their own worst enemy and could prove costly in this one.

In division three, Shelford’s loss against Winchelsea last week means it will meet Meredith a week earlier than many pundits predicted.

Meredith had a solid victory over Little River and should account for Shelford in this one.

In the other semi-final, Bell Park plays Winchelsea at Inverleigh for a shot at the grand final. Winch was gallant last week but might not have the firepower here.
