Bob among the elite with award for his ‘surfing lifestyle’ By MICHELLE HERBISON TORQUAY surfing historian Bob Smith’s dedication to the sport’s “waves, places and people has earned him a national award. Smith said winning Surfing Australia’s 2013 Peter Troy Lifestyle Award was “very cool. He was among the sport’s elite when presented with the award in Sydney during Surfing Australia’s 50th anniversary celebration. “It was a huge honour. I felt very humbled but also very proud at the same time. The ceremony also inducted Stephanie Gilmore into surfing’s hall of fame and named Australia’s top-10 most influential surfers. Smith’s credentials include about 18 Victorian titles, including in a recent over-65s Victorian Longboard Title, and 2009’s Australian Masters Championships in both long and shortboard over-60s categories. He is a lifetime member of Torquay Boardriders’ Club and past president of Surf Coast Longboarders’ Club. Smith owns a large collection of surfing paraphernalia including old surfboards, magazines, surf movies and posters. He works at Rip Curl as its archivist historian. Smith said his long career as a teacher at Torquay enabled him to live near the waves and pursue a surfing lifestyle. “I’ve met a lot of really interesting, fantastic people who are like-minded free spirits in some ways.

Propaganda war ‘puts residents on frontline’ RESIDENTS should be wary of a property developer’s “propaganda exercise warning of parking meters and over-development in Torquay, according to a community group. 3228 Residents Association president Sid Pope said the group had “significant concerns about AMEX’s flyers and phone polling under the guise of Torquay Green, a proposed residential and commercial development in Spring Creek. Mr Pope accused the proponents Adam and Cameron Shephard of “misleadingly identifying themselves as “families within

the community. “In fact, the Shephard brothers are both executive directors of AMEX Corporation – a large property development company spanning three states with offices in Perth and Brisbane, he said. A company statement last week said council’s proposed C66 planning scheme amendment, which puts Torquay Green outside town boundaries, would “open doors to parking meters in central Torquay and high-density developments. Mr Pope said the company used “tenuous links to come up with the warning. He doubted Torquay Green would deliver on its own promises to provide a

school, a pool and an arts centre. “We’re concerned that people in the community will believe that putting submissions in against C66 will ensure delivery of a swimming pool, a public arts centre, more public education and child support options when this is not the case. Torquay Green’s Cameron Shephard told the Independent council was misleading residents with its lack of explanation about clauses contained in the proposed amendment. “C66 is about more than development at Spring Creek, Mr Shephard said. “It opens the door to a range of changes that not everyone in the community is

aware of, such as paid parking and highdensity housing in established parts of town. We believe these changes are wrong for the community. Mr Shephard said his group would hand over land abutting Spring Creek to the public if Torquay Green was approved. “Our proposed development, which will be of the highest environmental standard of any in Torquay, will be the only way the public will actually be able to enjoy Spring Creek because we will restore it and turn it over to public ownership. “Under C66 only trespassers on private farms will be able to enjoy Spring Creek.
