SuperKidz Jasmine and Monique ‘having a go’ BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FOR JASMINE and Monique King, the chance to ride their bikes, go for a swim and have a run along the foreshore is always fun. So they were especially chuffed when dad Danny entered them in the Geelong Independent SuperKidz Triathlon. “They really like the idea of getting a medal,” Danny said. “But they just love getting out and

about, love riding their bikes and swimming, so doing it in an event like this has them pretty excited.” Nine-year-old Jasmine will participate in the seven-to-10-year age group, while Monique, eight, will have dad along for company in the Family Wave section. The Family Wave allows under-13 children to participate with a family member. The kids-only version of the Geelong Triathlon features short,

achievable distances based on participation and fun. “The Family Wave is ideal because it allows me to accompany Monique and get her used to events like this,” Danny said. “It’s a great way to get kids involved. They’ve been doing little runs and bike rides around the neighbourhood. “We even swam the course, so they’re prepared, familiar with it and it

will be a bit more comfortable for them. “It’s a good, fun event and it’s good to be part of it. It’ll be a big weekend.” Danny said SuperKidz offered children an opportunity to take up triathlons in the future. “At least they have had a go and if it encourages them to get out and improve their swimming then it’s always a good thing.” SuperKidz entries are available online at geelongmultisport.com.au.

THOUSANDS of competitors and spectators will converge on Geelong’s waterfront next week for three days of sport and activity. And entries are still open for participants to test themselves in triathlon disciplines over various distances in the 2012 Geelong Multi Sport Festival. The multi sport festival returns to the city from Friday, February 10 to Sunday, February 12 after a successful debut in 2011. Event organisers USM Events is excited to deliver three days of sport and community activities to the region with something for everyone. This year’s festival is helping raise money for Give Where You Live, a not-for-profit community organisation providing financial support to over 70 local human health and care agencies. The festival’s wide range of cycling, running and swimming events means competitors of all standards and ages can participate in the multi sports festival. Competition covers fun run/walks, minitriathlons, triathlon relay teams and an ocean swim through to a range of free on-shore community activities. The Geelong Independent has signed on as a sponsor of the event. The Geelong Independent SuperKidz Triathlon on Saturday will give children aged seven to 13 a chance to compete individually, with friends or family. Each SuperKidz competitor will receive an event singlet, a finisher’s medallion, a bag of other goodies and have chances to win random draw prizes. Managing editor Tony Galpin said the Independent was thrilled to be involved. “The Independent is particularly happy to help get children outdoors and involved in sport.” In addition to Saturday’s festival events and showcase triathlons on the Sunday, the free community activities include a youth skate competition and clinics, a Steampacket Open Air Cinema, a petting zoo, a sport and lifestyle expo plus entertainment and other attractions. Anyone wanting to enter can use the festival’s secure online entry form available at the official website, www.geelongmultisport.com.au. Online entries close Wednesday, February 8. Entries can also be paid in person with cash on Saturday morning one hour before starting time. The community events are all free, so residents are invited to turn up whenever and how often they like. More information, including changed traffic conditions, are available at www.geelongmultisport.com.au.
