$1 billion in exports at risk THE Australian beef industry stands to potentially lose $1 billion in exports following the Chinese Ministry of Commerce’s (MOFCOM) announcement it will implement global safeguard measures.

It comes after a year-long investigation by MOFCOM, which was initiated on 27 December 2024 and concluded on 30 December 2025.

Cattle Australia chair Garry Edwards said the decision would unfairly disadvantage Australian beef producers.

“Australia has a long-standing relationship with China as a trusted source of high-quality and safe beef, and we are deeply disappointed by this decision – a decision we believe to be entirely unwarranted and at odds with the sentiment of the Free Trade Agreement we share,” Mr Edwards said.

“Throughout the review process, Australian representatives engaged extensively with Chinese officials, both here and in China, to demonstrate the value of the trade we share and provided formal evidence our imports do not injure the local Chinese beef industry. We strongly believe this decision will erode the access of Chinese consumers to a reliable source of high-quality, safely produced protein.

“Cattle Australia is highly supportive of ‘global free trade’ with countries, underpinned by minimum equivalent biosecurity and food security standards.

“We are proud of the trade relationship we have held with China for many years and the abundance of benefits this has brought to both nations, including supporting the Chinese beef industry in growing its own long-term prosperity by providing high quality breeding livestock and superior genetics.”

China is a long-term and important market for Australian beef and the new ‘safeguard’ measures proposed by China at two thirds of the past 12 months (A$3.3 billion volume) effectively means that this will impact the equivalent of more than $1 billion in trade.

It is important to note this announcement does not single out Australia and is applicable to all nations, meaning countries including Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, the United States and New Zealand will also have trade impacted, but it also does not specifically target those countries which have massively altered volumes to the China market.

(File) “The safeguard measures are particularly disappointing for our industry given Australia accounts for only eight per cent of China’s beef imports, while other countries have massively increased the volume they supply at lower prices.

For example, South America makes up almost 80 per cent of China’s overall import volume and this volume has the most direct market correlation to the beef produced domestically in China,”

Mr Edwards said.

Australian representatives, including Cattle Australia, will now seek further details on the specifics of the safeguard measures and continue to engage with MOFCOM to understand the final decision and find long-term, mutually beneficial outcomes.

“While China is within its rights to impose safeguard measures under certain circumstanc-

es, we need more detailed information and discussions to understand why this decision has been made,” Mr Edwards said.

“We will continue to work closely with Australian and Chinese representatives to encourage them to take a longer-term view and determine how we can continue to work together for the benefit of each nation’s beef industry and Chinese consumers.”

Déjà vu as China resumes beef tariffs

By Michael Crowley, Managing Director of Meat & Livestock Australia MEAT & Livestock Australia (MLA) has expressed its disappointment on behalf of Australia’s red meat industry, following the announcement by China’s Ministry of Commerce to implement a global safeguard measure on beef imports, including Australian beef.

Australia has consistently engaged with China throughout their investigation process, making clear at every opportunity that our exports are not the cause of any alleged injury to China’s domestic beef sector. We have also reminded China of Australia’s position as a trusted free trade partner and hope that will continue to be respected.

China remains and will continue to be an important market for Australian beef and this tariff will impact our customers within China significantly. MLA’s China offices will liaise closely with our customers and importers in-market as this measure is implemented.

MLA plays a critical role in driving market access and marketing Australian red meat globally, including maintaining a strong presence in China to support trade relationships and promote Australian beef.

Importantly, MLA will continue to work with industry and trade partners to actively promote Australian red meat in China, ensuring we remain wellpositioned to capitalise on our strong reputation.

While this safeguard measure will impact all major beef suppliers to China, not just Australia, we will continue to work closely with the Australian Government and industry partners including the Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) to seek clarity on the measure and pursue the best possible outcome for Australian beef producers.

Rural Aid begins new partnership RURAL Aid recently announced a partnership with WFI Insurance aimed at supporting rural communities facing disasters.

Rural Aid’s association with WFI began in April 2025 when the insurance group donated $250,000 to support farmers in Western Queensland affected by the widespread drought.

The disaster caused the loss of more than 150,000 livestock.

WFI Insurance executive general manager Damien Gallagher said the new partnership will help establish more support for Australian farmers.

“Having seen first-hand the meaningful difference Rural Aid made to communities across Western Queensland, we are delighted to now establish a formal partnership to support their ongoing work,” he said.

“Our organisations share the same values and an aligned purpose - to make your world a safer place.

“On-ground disaster response partners such as Rural Aid play an increasingly important role in helping rural communities recover.

“It’s essential they remain well supported, with their network of resources and volunteers fundamental in helping farmers get back on their feet.”

In 2025 Rural Aid supplied more than $6 million to support services for Australian farmers as well as thousands of hours in volunteering toward rebuilding efforts.

The impact of changing climates is increasing in severity throughout Australia and Rural Aid chief executive officer John Warlters said that new regions are likely to be impacted by future natural disasters.

“We know the terrible hardship that rural communities face in the wake of these disasters, the scale and devastation can be overwhelming,” he said.

“It’s only through the generous support of partners and donors such as WFI, that we can make such a positive impact.”

Favourable conditions EXPORT market demand has supported elevated prices for Australian lamb, mutton and beef through much of 2025, with favourable market conditions expected to continue into the new year, according to agribusiness banking specialist Rabobank.

In its Global animal protein outlook 2026, the bank’s RaboResearch division says high cattle inventories will maintain elevated Australian beef production, while sheepmeat production takes time to recover.

Report co-author RaboResearch senior animal proteins analyst Angus Gidley-Baird said successive favourable seasons have allowed Australia’s cattle breeding inventory to build, and cattle were now flowing through to markets.

“Even southern areas – which experienced dry conditions throughout 2024 and into 2025 and offloaded stock at the time – are likely to have seen production levels recover in the second half of 2025,” he said.

“As such, 2025 production is projected to reach 2.86 million tonnes, up 11 per cent yearon-year and a new record.”

Mr Gidley-Baird said with large cattle inventories in Australia, “we anticipate beef production in 2026 to remain steady at historically-high levels, reaching 2.85 million tonnes – the second highest production volume in Australia’s history”.

“Substantial production volumes will translate to ongoing elevated export volumes, with the US likely to remain the key market, accounting for 29 per cent of total Australian beef exports in 2025,” he said.

“South Korea (which accounted for 15 per cent share of Australian beef exports in 2025) and Japan (16 per cent) will remain important markets, while volumes to China (18 per cent) are expected to rise, given the ongoing tensions between China and the US.” With sizable volumes of beef in the market, Mr Gidley-Baird said, cattle prices in 2026 will depend on producer sentiment and seasonal conditions.

“We believe that cattle prices will remain close to current levels, with some potential upside given the strong US market, and that the National Young Cattle Indicator will sit around AUD 4.30 to AUD 4.80/kg.

However, if seasonal conditions deteriorate and producers lose confidence, high cattle inventories and increased slaughter numbers will see prices contract,” he said.

RaboResearch global strategist animal protein Éva Gocsik said globally, while the bank expected feed costs to remain steady, a combination of lower protein supplies, rising volatility and trade costs and disease pressure will weigh on margins.

“Processors (in regions where supplies are limited) may face ongoing challenges around capacity utilisation, as well as trade disruptions resulting from tariffs and other protectionist measures.

All of this could raise costs, pressure demand and ultimately squeeze margins.

In both mature and developing markets, a focus on increasing efficiency and productivity will be critical at the farm and processor level,” she said.

Price sensitivity According to Ms Gocsik, with global gross domestic product growth projected to decelerate, consumers are likely to become increasingly price-sensitive, altering their consumption patterns.

At the same time, the rising use of glucagonlike peptide-1 agonists (GLP-1) weight loss medications is also likely to influence dietary choices.

“Price pressures within animal protein categories may lead consumers to trade down or switch between proteins, while consumers seeking protein-rich foods will potentially boost animal protein demand,” she said.

Trade resilience Despite disruptions, the Rabobank report said animal protein trade has shown resilience, with strategic front-loading, like shipments of Brazil-

ian beef into the US, helping to sustain volumes amid volatility and shifting tariffs that are reshaping global flows.

Meanwhile, supply-demand imbalances continue to seek equilibrium, a trend that is likely to persist in 2026.

Geopolitical tensions and evolving policies will continue to influence trade, but new trade agreements may provide a boost.

Disease challenges Global disease outbreaks have also disrupted trade, squeezed margins and pressured productivity in the animal proteins sectors, the report said.

Disease outbreaks such as African swine fever and avian influenza continue to disrupt trade and squeeze margins, RaboResearch said.

“Combined with emerging diseases like New World screwworm and Bluetongue, these challenges are driving greater adoption of biosecurity measures and increased focus on new approaches to managing disease pressure, though implementation remains complex,” it said.

Sustainability and technology In an uncertain operating environment, sustainability-related risks linked to climate and nature are increasingly critical, the outlook said.

Regulatory momentum is pushing sustainability to the forefront of strategic planning for animal protein companies, it said.

The report said technology, particularly artificial intelligence, offers potential benefits for managing operational risks and advancing sustainability goals, though investment remains weak.

“While not all AI applications will transform the industry, strategic integration into existing workflows could spark meaningful progress in a sector that is traditionally slow to adopt new technologies,” it said.

“Maintaining consumer trust is paramount.

In times of heightened risk, consumers continue to prioritise animal welfare, supply availability, price, food safety and quality, and these demands are driving advancements in transparency and traceability,” Ms Gocsik said.

Australian beef production hits record high AUSTRALIA’S cattle industry continues to set new benchmarks, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures confirming record beef production for the September quarter.

At the same time, sheep and lamb slaughter eased significantly following last year’s peak turnoff.

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA)’s manager for market information Stephen Bignell said that strong seasonal conditions across northern Australia have underpinned the surge in cattle numbers.

“From January to September, Australia produced 2.16 million tonnes of beef, 13% higher than the same period last year,” Mr Bignell said.

“This quarter alone saw the highest cattle slaughter since 1978, and record beef production across key states.”

cent year-on-year.

Queensland led the charge, recording one of the largest quarters for processing ever, while New South Wales and Victoria also posted strong numbers.

Beef production hit a quarterly record of 759,270 tonnes, with New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland all setting new highs. Only Tasmania saw a slight decline.

Carcase weights remained steady at 307kg, slightly below last year’s average but consistent with seasonal trends. Female slaughter rates eased nationally to 53%, down from 54.5% in Q2, with reductions in New South Wales and Queensland following record highs earlier in the year. Western Australia was the only state to lift its female slaughter.

Mr Bignell said the contrasting weather patterns have reflected on the market dynamics.

“Cattle numbers are being supported by strong pasture conditions and herd rebuilding, while sheep and lamb turnoff is easing after last year’s peak,” Mr Bignell said.

New lines and old favourites

By Jock Hislop and the Baynes COMING for sale at JB Angus Stud in 2026 are some exiting new sire lines, and some proven favorites from the last couple of years.

After my trip the United States in 2023 two sires have made a lasting impact, and have been incorporated into our programme.

Based on ebv’s alone these two bulls may not have been chosen, but this only serves to reenforce the obvious, we breed cattle NOT data!

The first of these is Baldridge Badger, a son of one of the most heralded cows in the Angus breed, Baldridge Isabel Y69.

Her list of accomplishments are too numerous to mention, but a few of her sons’ that many of you would know include BeastMode, Bronc and 38 Special.

Badgers’ masculine phenotype, sound structure and extremely docile nature immediately triggered a use case for me over the more feminine maternally orientated females I have been building within the herd, and I have certainly been pleased with the overall results.

Badger has brought solid growth combined with greater muscle expression, wonderfully sound foot and leg structure, and pasted on his docile nature better than any other sire I have used in recent memory.

A standout line for 2026 will be five flush brothers from Coonamble L339, whom I purchased in 2022 for thirty-two thousand dollars. L339 is sired

by Coonamble Hector who in my humble opinion is perhaps Australias’ most prolific cow maker of the last decade or so, and her dam is Carabar Docklands over Bangadang Lowan A61, who is probably Australias’ version of Y69.

This cross has worked well and is sure to interest those seeking consistency through pedigree. I believe the Badger progeny generally have a lot to offer and will prove popular with those of you who value phenotype highly, as can be seen with the photo of V82.

The second sire inspected in the United States that impressed was Tehama Testament.

Viewed whilst in service at the Thiel Ranch in South Dakota, he impressed as a free moving bal-

anced sire that should suit heifer joining well.

As a naturally earlier maturing individual, I have used him over larger framed females with a little extra capacity and I think this has worked out well. Progeny for sale are suitable for heifer joining and the data would suggest good carcass attributes.

I have again gone to one of my older proven favorites in Sitz Stellar. Our Stellar females now in production have proved their fertility in tough conditions, show fantastic udder conformation, and have raised solid calves ticking all the profit boxes.

Experience is a wonderful teacher and this years sons are amongst our best.

The other young sire in this coming sale that maybe of particular interest to those who appreciate the visual impact a sire may have should be V128.

He is an Alpine Rock Solid son out of Coonamble L109, also purchased in 2022 for thirty thousand and also a Hector daughter. L109 is from the Wilcoola female line, with another great cow

maker in Sitz Upward as maternal grand sire. Both L109 and L339 will feature in future sales at JB Angus and their influence through their daughters will leave a lasting legacy.

We will again be joined by my good friends the Baynes, adding a little variation to the sale and whose support during the year and Stacis’ photography is greatly appreciated.

As the old saying goes “the eye doesn’t lie, only the perception differs” I believe this to be true, as we all have different priorities around the development of our respective herds. By selecting sires that may improve any perceived weakness and build upon our strengths should drive the consistent improvement we all seek.

This practice along with culling those that fail to measure up is what continues to push the JB Angus herd forward, making visual inspection a must. Wishing everyone a successful season ahead and hoping to see you during Beef Week.

Push for Victorian farmers to register AS bushfires threaten homes and farms in Victoria, rural charity Rural Aid is encouraging farmers in Victoria to register for support, with some early property losses already reported.

Conditions are being closely monitored but producers are urged to prepare for potential impacts to crops, livestock, fencing, sheds, and other essential infrastructure.

With the situation evolving and conditions potentially changing quickly, Rural Aid is urging all primary producers to ensure they are registered so assistance can be delivered quick-

ly and efficiently if required. The charity is also calling on the broader community to support farmers who may be affected.

Donations made through the Rural Aid website help ensure producers can access relief as soon as it is needed, protect their livelihoods, and maintain Australia’s food and fibre supply.

Rural Aid Chief Executive Officer John Warlters said the situation is fast-moving and concerning.

“The bushfire risk is severe and is already causing damage in some areas,” Mr Warlters said.

“Being registered with Rural Aid ensures

we can contact farmers quickly and provide the right support at the right time. Registration only takes a few minutes and gives our team the information needed to respond promptly if a farmer is affected.”

Real-World Proof: Victorian Farmer Sees Major Improvements in Soil and Water Performance Victorian grower Daniel Thomas recently trialled Hydrosmart on 250 acres irrigated with highEC (850980) river water supplying both flood and pivot systems.

Like many mixed-farming operations, his soils suffered from a stubborn hardpan at 125–150

mm—restricting root growth and contributing to waterlogging, shallow crops, and wasted irrigation.

Positive growth for breed

By Herefords Australia The Australian beef industry closed out 2025 with renewed confidence, steady herd growth and strong global demand, positioning producers well for the years ahead, according to Herefords Australia chief executive officer Hamish Chandler.

While seasonal conditions continue to shift, industry sentiment remains optimistic, with most producers planning to maintain or slightly increase herd numbers.

“The national herd is sitting at around 28 million head, including more than 19 million breeding cows and heifers,” she said.

“Producers are signalling a commitment to stability and measured growth.

“This provides a strong foundation for the beef sector and significant opportunity for Hereford breeders.”

With an estimated 830,000 to 1.1 million Hereford breeding females nationally, registration data shows the breed is producing sufficient bulls to service demand.

However, Mr Chandler said the greatest growth potential lies in wider use of Hereford genetics in crossbreeding systems.

“Herefords continue to lift fertility, improve carcase performance and enhance market suitability across diverse programs,” he said.

Recent insights from the World Hereford Conference reinforce rising global confidence in the breed, particularly in crossbreeding operations.

Similar trends are emerging in Australia, with increasing use of Hereford bulls over Angus and Bos indicus herds, and growing interest from lot feeders targeting EU markets.

Nominations for Levy Review Committee

By Cattle Australia Cattle Australia (CA) is calling for nominations for positions on a dedicated committee.

The committee will help guide a long-anticipated review of the cattle transaction levy.

Five producers are being sought -two southern region, two northern region and one western region - along with two independent committee members to join two CA Directors on the Grass-fed Cattle Transaction Levy Review Committee to engage with industry and collect views on the current levy program.

Over the course of the next 10 months, the Committee will work to oversee and guide the review of the cattle transaction levy, with recommendations to be presented to levy

payers for a vote at the Meat and Livestock Australia annual general meeting in November 2026.

CA chief executive officer Will Evans said it was imperative producers had their say throughout this important process to ensure the levy had the ongoing ability to support critical industry research, development, marketing and biosecurity initiatives.

“This is a key opportunity for individuals with suitable knowledge and expertise to help drive this long-overdue review of the levy program,” Mr Evans said.

“Our producer committee members will have a strong awareness of the issues most important to fellow producers in their production area, knowledge of the objectives and opera-

tions of CA and MLA, and a clear understanding of the application and apportionment of the levy.

“There will also be the skills-based appointment of an independent specialist in research and development corporations and an independent specialist in government and government systems to ensure we’re capturing committee members with robust and proven skills across levy and government processes.”

Cattle Australia called for a review of the cattle transaction levy earlier this year, with discussions at the recent Cattle Connect event in Dalby showing widespread support for the review across industry.

“As we’ve said from when we initiated this

process, the last change to the levy occurred in 2006, and the last review was in 2009, despite a declaration at the time it should be reviewed every three years,” Mr Evans said.

“It’s now almost 2026 and one of CA’s highest priorities is driving this review to ensure our industry is best positioned to prosper into the future.”

Applications to the Committee will close 19 January, with an announcement of the successful candidates to follow shortly thereafter.

Parker on trade agreement

By Dr Chris Parker, CA Senior Advisor THE time has come to tip the scales back in Australia’s favour after decades of agricultural trade imbalance with Europe, severely stymying our beef exports while decimating our local pork industry.

The Albanese Government and Minister Farrell have a strong record on trade negotiations, and we expect nothing less than this to continue when settling this agreement with the EU so the benefits can flow to all Australians. Industry strongly supported the government walking away from a substandard EU agreement in their last term. As an export-focussed nation, Australia needs to advocate for equivalent, rules-based, free market access, as we have done successfully many times in the past.

The trade agreement currently being negotiated between the Commonwealth and the European Union is the chance to correct an historical imbalance. Australian governments of both sides of politics by default were guilty of excessive generosity to Europe as Australia pushed an economic agenda of trade liberalisation and the

removal of domestic tariffs and subsidies. And yet we have not seen the commensurate benefits provided by the EU. For example, there is no quota limit on EU pork exports to Australia, and they incur zero tariffs, which is why imported product dominates our supermarket shelves.

In 1990, when the Commonwealth began lifting biosecurity restrictions on pork imports from the likes of Denmark, there were significantly more piggeries in operation than today. In 199495 alone, more than 1000 piggeries closed and today there are just 4,506 registered pig production sites in all of Australia.

On the other hand, in 2019 the EU imposed changes to existing quota arrangements to specifically benefit the US, which came at the expense of market share that was held by other beef-exporting nations, including Australia.

The bottom line is Australia currently has a substantial trade deficit with the EU, and the terms of trade we have been operating under have done very little to mitigate this.

This must change as the Federal Government

negotiates a new agreement. Red meat access must be substantial and without impediments. If the EU insists on having quotas, then the conditions relating to these quotas must be minimal to allow for the maximum number of Australian supply chains to participate in the EU market at the lowest possible tariff rate, preferably zero.

Further commitment must also be sought from the EU to reduce its non-tariff trade barriers – an area at which the EU excels in finding new and creative ways to block access to its markets. One only has to think of the EU Deforestation Regulation, or its insistence that only beef produced without hormone growth promotants (HGPs) can access the market.

While masked by noble causes, Europe’s underlying culture of economic protectionism is the root cause of these policies. They are designed to block imports from efficient countries like Australia, or those from developing countries with lower input costs.

One crucially important condition Australian must demand is modernisation of food safety assurances by removing the EU Cattle Accreditation Scheme (EUCAS), which requires beef to be

sourced from closed herd production systems, and implementing instead a HGP Freedom Assurance Scheme which allows for beef sourced from open herd production systems. The information and technical arguments to allow this have been with the EU officials for some time. It is time they acted.

Australia is a global advocate for free trade and rules-based trading systems, which has ensured our economy has continued to grow, and our agriculture sector has remained innovative and productive. The current government’s support of this and its cool head in facing the recent challenges to this, should be commended.

The scale and significance of the EU market should not be underestimated. This is a once in a generation opportunity to complete a deal that will right the wrongs of the past and create new levels of long-term demand for Australian agricultural exports.

But a continuation of one-sided deals with the EU would mean that Australia loses out on access to the world’s largest trading bloc for another generation, all the while they continue to reap the benefits of access to our markets.

The proposal, developed under the National Road Safety Action Plan, received more than 11,000 submissions, with strong opposition from rural communities, industry and everyday road users.

drivers of road safety.

“This was never a road safety solution - it was a distraction from the real issue,” Mr Johnson said.

“We thank the government for listening to regional Australians.

“Scrapping this proposal is simply common sense.”

Mr Johnson said the focus must now shift toward meaningful investment in rural road infrastructure, rather than measures that add complexity for drivers without improving safety outcomes.

He highlighted the commencement of works on the $500 million Beef Roads program in Queensland as a positive example of the type of investment that actually delivers safety and productivity benefits.

“We are already seeing works start on the $500 million Beef Roads project in Queensland,” Mr Johnson said.

“This is exactly what rural Australia needs - real, on-the-ground investment that makes roads safer, stronger and more reliable.”

“Better roads save lives. Better roads reduce crashes. Better roads improve productivity.

Speed-limit changes do none of these things without the infrastructure to support them.”

Mr Johnson said ALRTA looks forward to working with all levels of government to progress practical, evidence-based safety measures that address the true causes of serious incidents on rural roads — including chronic undermaintenance, deteriorating pavement conditions, and limited funding for regional renewal.

“The Beef Roads program shows the way forward,” he said. “If we want safer roads, we need to invest in them. That’s how you get real safety outcomes.”

Virtual fencing now legalised VIRTUAL fencing has been legalised in South Australia, allowing producers to use the technology to improve cattle management, reduce infrastructure costs and help protect native vegetation.

It follows the approval of an amendment to the Animal Welfare Regulations 2012, enabling virtual fencing to be used in South Australia’s agricultural sector.

The updates allow manufacturers to apply to the government for approval of their virtual fencing technology and system from early 2026.

Primary producers will then be able to buy or lease an approved system for use in their operations.

Virtual fencing will be used for cattle management only, and applications will be considered

against stringent approval criteria and conditions, which ensure animal welfare is at the forefront of any decisions.

Virtual fencing uses collars capable of producing an electric stimulus to contain cattle to an assigned area. The stimulus is significantly weaker than the shock from a standard electric fence.

The devices deliver sound cues – such as a beep – if near a virtual boundary and animals learn that, if they continue their direction of movement towards leaving the virtual boundary, they will receive an electrical stimulus.

Some systems actively herd animals using vibrations and audio cues, which allow the animals to move at their own pace.

The technology can support more efficient animal and pasture management and reduce

costs associated with building and maintaining internal paddock fencing.

Virtual fencing can also allow more precise control over grazing areas, enabling farmers to protect sensitive areas like waterways, native vegetation and wildlife habitat.

Key characteristics and approval criteria include: • Minimum age requirements for collars being placed on an animal • Training for the animals and the user • Safeguards to ensure the technology does not prevent an animal from returning to a designated area Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven MLC said it was im-

portant for South Australian farmers to have access to the best tools available.

“Virtual fencing can improve productivity, reduce infrastructure costs, whilst also protecting native vegetation and maintaining high standards of animal welfare,” she said.

“When coupled with individual monitoring, virtual fencing enables farmers to manage their herds on an individual animal basis far more effectively.

“It allows them to see their cattle around the clock and get alerts if there are any health concerns.

“Virtual fencing also supports animal safety during emergencies such as bushfires or floods as it can be easily disabled to allow cattle to move to safety.”

All-terrain quad bike safety alert for users SAFEWORK SA is urging South Australians to take extra care when riding quad bikes and side-by-side vehicles over the summer holidays following a spike in deaths over the past two years.

Since 2011, 234 Australians have died in incidents involving quad bikes and side-by-side vehicles, with men accounting for more than 80 per cent of fatalities, according to Safe Work Australia.

In South Australia, there have been seven deaths in 2024 and 2025, the first in the state since 2021, with most victims being farmers.

Quad bikes are four-wheel vehicles with a saddle-style seat, while side-by-side vehicles often include seatbelts, side-by-side seating, and a rollover protection cage.

All are commonly called all-terrain vehicles.

Quad bikes are one of the leading causes of injury and death on Australian farms, with fatalities occurring during both work and recreational activities.

Most incidents happen when quad bikes roll over, throwing riders or trapping them underneath, where they can be crushed or suffocate.

Between 2011 and 2024, 77 per cent of quad bike deaths involved adults over 50 years of age, while 12 per cent involved children under 16.

SafeWork SA Director Compliance and Enforcement Brett Pfeffer said people should take care when using all-terrain vehicles.

“As we have seen in South Australia in recent years, quad bikes and side-by-side vehicles can be deadly when not used correctly,” Mr Pfeffer said.

“This information aims to shine a light on the hazards so riders can take the necessary precautions to minimise the risks.

“In addition to reading the safety instructions for the quad bike you plan to ride, I urge users to visit the SafeWork SA website where we have comprehensive information about quad bike safety.”

To minimise risks, riders are urged to always wear a helmet, use a quad bike with rollover

protection, never allow children on adult quad bikes, avoid carrying passengers on single-rider bikes, and ride carefully on rough terrain or steep slopes.

The Consumer Goods (Quad Bikes) Safety Standard, introduced in 2019, requires new and imported second-hand quad bikes to meet minimum stability levels, include rollover protection, and display clear safety warnings at the point of sale.

Before every ride, SafeWork SA recommends telling someone your plans, wearing protective clothing and gear, never riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and always carrying a mobile phone or radio device to get help in an emergency.

SafeWork SA Director Compliance and Enforcement Brett Pfeffer said people should take care when using all-terrain vehicles.

The Eyes on You bulls are soft skinned, deepsided, heavy bulls that are very eye-appealing.

Quantum Leap has left his mark as a heifer bull option with smooth fronted, long sons with appealing data.

Four flush brothers by the $190,000 Knowla So Right are even and very easy to look at with a balanced set of numbers.

A feature of the draft are 30 bulls used to join 500 plus commercial females destined for the feature female PTIC sales at Naracoorte and Mortlake in January.

These bulls have been specifically selected for a heifer joining and have proven very popular in the past.

In the draft headed to Mortlake the entire drop of rising 18 month old bulls reserved for this sale are sired by Stokman Solution, LVVF Tanker and Goolagong S157, a Rennylea L519 son.

Both the Solution and Tanker bulls are outstanding heifer bull propositions and allow buyers an opportunity to secure new Nampara genetics.

Stokman Solution, a Sitz Resilient son, is in the top 1% for Birth Weight and gestation length yet the top 10% for all Angus Breeding Indexes.

Tracking soils across state SOUTH Australia’s landscape boards are taking a central role in a major national soil monitoring effort, with seven boards selected to collect soil samples across the state.

Led by CSIRO and funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the National Soil Monitoring Program will sample about 3,000 sites across Australia and collect around 30,000 samples to build a consistent national picture of soil health and long-term trends.

Between 2025 and 2028, landscape boards from seven South Australian regions - Limestone Coast, Murraylands and Riverland, Hills and Fleurieu, Kangaroo Island, SA Arid Lands, Eyre Peninsula, and Northern and Yorke - will

contribute to the national program.

The Limestone Coast Landscape Board will lead project delivery on behalf of all regions, coordinating the testing of 346 sites.

Field teams will collect samples from diverse soil types and land uses, recording information about the sampling sites and land management practices.

The program aims to fill a critical knowledge gap.

Currently, Australia lacks nationally consistent, long-term measured soil monitoring data to guide land management decisions and support investment in climate-smart, sustainable agriculture.

Accurate soil data is essential for under-

standing the condition and trajectory of Australia’s soils and enables appropriate responses to changes over time.

Limestone Coast Landscape Board project lead Ehsan Sayad said maintaining healthy soils was critical to productivity.

“If we can better understand the nature of our soils and their vulnerability, we can better manage our environment,” Dr Sayad said.

“For example, we can improve our resilience to natural disasters and improve the efficient use of water.

“We are seeking vibrant and prosperous communities across the state and understanding the health of our soil will help land managers to make decisions about their management

practices long into the future.”

Data collected through the program will be publicly accessible through the Australian National Soil Information System, allowing farmers, land managers, policymakers, and researchers to benefit from reliable, long-term soil information.

The initiative will also enhance extension services and strengthen local capacity in soil management and other integrated natural resource management practices.

The program is supported by funding through the Federal Government Natural Heritage Trust in collaboration with CSIRO. More information is available at www. lc.landscape.sa.gov.au.

New mobile lab strengthens biosecurity STATE - South Australia’s ability to respond swiftly to emergency animal disease (EAD) outbreaks has been strengthened with the launch of a new mobile biosecurity laboratory.

The state-of-the-art mobile lab will enable rapid processing and turnaround of samples – a critical factor during EAD outbreaks, where early diagnosis can significantly reduce economic and social impacts, and the risk of spreading the disease.

Equipped with a biosafety cabinet for safe handling of viruses and bacteria, the lab incorporates cutting-edge technology to support on-site diagnostic testing and faster decisionmaking.

be deployed directly to affected properties, acting as a central hub for sample collection and preliminary processing.

This approach accelerates testing and ensures vital information reaches decision-makers quickly.

Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven said the mobile laboratory was a transformative innovation.

“Protecting our livestock industries through rapid response to any biosecurity incident is essential – particularly for South Australia’s $922 million poultry industry,” Ms Scriven said.

“By bringing advanced testing capabilities directly to the field, we can save valuable time, speed up diagnosis, and strengthen our ability to contain and eradicate disease threats.

“Together with other preparations, this ensures PIRSA can respond quickly and effectively to protect our industries, the environment and regional communities.”

The Federal Government recently confirmed H5 bird flu in samples collected from elephant seals on Heard Island, a remote subAntarctic territory more than 4000 kilometres south-west of Perth and 1700 north of Antarctica.

South Australia’s poultry industry remains free of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

While Australia’s H5 bird flu freedom status remains unchanged, authorities noted the detection has served as a reminder of the importance of ongoing vigilance, coordinated biosecurity measures, and preparedness across governments, industry, and conservation partners.

The new mobile laboratory forms part of joint efforts by the Federal and State governments to strengthen preparedness.

Surveillance and early reporting remain key, with the public urged to contact their vet or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 if they notice signs of disease or unexpected deaths in birds or wildlife.

New star of pest control THE Centre for Invasive Species Solutions has appointed a new coordinator to strengthen the management of feral cats and foxes.

Yasmin Aly has now taken the role of national feral cat and fox management coordinator and will work alongside Greg Mifsud, national wild dog management coordinator, and Heidi Kleinert, national feral rabbit management coordinator.

Ms Aly’s said she aims to help land managers address the growing problem in her new role.

“I’m very much looking forward to starting in this role and continuing the leadership CISS has developed in feral cat and fox management,” she said.

“In particular, supporting and delivering actions under the National Threat Abatement Plans for predation by European Red Foxes and feral cats.

“These plans set out an excellent framework for guiding this work to ensure the long-term survival of our native species and unique habitats impacted by ongoing fox and feral cat predation.”

Collectively, feral cats and foxes kill roughly 2.6 billion native reptiles, birds and mammals.

Feral cats also carry diseases that can cause miscarriage and birth defects in livestock and a 2023 ABARES survey identified that foxes cost an estimated $198 million to the livestock industry.

As a national coordinator, Ms Aly is set to work alongside key stakeholders to support

control efforts and help with the adoption of resources like PestSmart and FeralScan.

The role is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and CISS Chief Executive Shauna Chadlowe said each of the national coordinators will help provide practical solutions.

“Foxes kill and maim small livestock, particularly lambs and poultry,” she said. “Feral cats are also associated with the spread of certain livestock diseases.

“These impacts aren’t abstract—they affect real farmers, real businesses and real livelihoods.

“This role will build on the national leadership CISS has provided in feral cat and fox management since 2021—raising awareness of their far-reaching impacts, sharing research and best practices and supporting land managers in their control efforts.

“National Coordinators are the ‘glue’ in Australia’s invasive species system. They play a crucial role supporting effective, coordinated and humane best-practice management.”
