Pakenham growing in pride, On the border between rural townships like Nar Nar Goon and Kooweerup and metropolitan Melbourne, Pakenham boasts the best of both worlds, highlighting beautiful scenery, suburban communities, a variety of recreation opportunities and a rich and diverse retail scene.

While Pakenham locals are already likely to be aware of what makes Pakenham great, this feature showcases the best aspects of life in Pakenham from the great education options and local businesses to leisure services and retail sectors.

PAKENHAM REALLY HAS IT ALL The 2021 Census highlighted a total of 54,118 people called Pakenham home, with the population only set to grow more and more over the coming decades.

Pakenham is a strongly family-oriented area, with over 46.2 per cent of the adult population being married, and over 70 per cent of locals living in a family home rather than on their own or in a group share situation.

The area also has a higher-than-average population of children - with populations of those attending preschool, primary and secondary schooling being higher than the state or national average.

According to the 2021 Census, Pakenham’s locals come from a range of backgrounds, with 32.7 per cent of residents born overseas, including 6 per cent from India, 3.2 per cent from England, 2 per cent from Sri Lanka and 1.2 per cent from the Philippines.

While 41.3 per cent of Pakenham locals indicated they had no religious affiliation, the most common responses included Catholicism, Anglican and Sikhism.

The most popular occupations for Pakenham locals included technicians and tradies (16.5 per cent), professionals (15 per cent), and community and personal service workers (12.9 per cent).

Other main areas of employment are clerical and administrative workers at 12.4 per cent, labourers at 12 per cent, and machinery operators and drivers at 10 per cent.

Pakenham’s GRP (Gross Regional Product) has been steadily growing across the last few years, with GRP growth across the region from 2008-2024 being 5.7 per cent.

More than 21,000 jobs in the area contribute $9 billion to the state economy.

Manufacturing and construction are the primary industries in the region, highlighting Pakenham as a suburb which is constantly growing.

Small businesses in Pakenham are some of the best in the state and they are giving their all.

Whether it is the great service from our local cafes, hairdressers, or homewares stores, or the fact you know your neighbourhood newsagent or clothing shop will go the extra mile to get you what you want, we are spoiled with wonderful options.

However, many of these businesses are doing it tough with conditions worse than they have ever been before.

Record taxes and charges (including sky-high land tax), high power prices, and red tape are

just some of the reasons our small businesses are struggling.

Last weekend, I walked Pakenham Main Street with the Leader of the Opposition, Jess Wilson, and the Liberal candidate for Pakenham, Radmila Dyson. We heard many businesses raise these issues. But they also talked to us about the increased theft, threats to themselves and their staff, and the outrageous increases in costs of every single element of their business.

Then you’ve got the road closures that prevent customers getting to some local businesses; like the two-year nightmare experienced by

those traders on Bald Hill Road.

Victorian small businesses need a government that understands them and will work with them to create an economy where they can flourish.

Labor wants to weigh small business down.

The Liberals and Nationals want to take the burden off small business so that they can grow, employ more staff and reach new heights.

boasting best of both worlds From page 36 GARDENS AND OUTDOOR DESTINATIONS While Lakeside Lake often takes the cake in terms of Pakenham’s premier outdoor landmarks, there are plenty of other places to enjoy a casual stroll.

Eastone Reserve is often a birdwatcher’s paradise, with a picturesque wetland reserve with walking paths, exercise equipment and picnic facilities. At the top of the hill is a shelter with table and barbecues, while there is an impressive water fountain in the middle of the lake.

A dog lover’s getaway can be found at Don Jackson Reserve, including a fully-fenced off leash dog park with agility equipment, drinking fountains, natural shade and seating.

Deep Creek Reserve offers a plethora of attractions for nature lovers, such as the Cardinia Environment Coalition native plant nursery which hosts a variety of stunning Victorian flora and helps protect the local environment, through monitoring invasive species and weather events that could be potentially harmful to native plants.

The Reserve also offers ‘Eco Play’, which affords local kids the opportunity to play in the beauty of the reserve while also being educated on the natural wonders of the area.

The Cardinia Aqueduct Trail offers a scenic and pleasant space for walkers and cyclists to exercise in the fresh air, and is also dog friendly for those with four legged friends. The Aqueduct Trail is a treat for bird watchers, hosting a number of bird species such as Peregrine falcons, Brown tree creepers, Honeyeaters, Blue Wrens and Scrub Wrens.

Other outdoor gems include the Edenbrook Wetlands and Playground and PB Ronald Reserve.

CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT Located in the lakeside area, the Cardinia Cultural Centre offers a host of shows and activities for locals to enjoy.

The events staged there are highly diverse, with an ever-changing array of entertainment acts, from stand up comedians to ballet and interpretive dance acts, local theatre, bodybuilding performances and community events.

The Cultural Centre also includes a digital and visual arts gallery which highlights local artistic talent and regional art.

The complex has a function room that can be hired out for all sorts of events, from business functions to weddings and family gatherings,

and even conventions.

Finally, a cafe on the site offers pub style feeds and hot drinks from 9am-3pm Tuesday to Sunday, and also before events.

EDUCATION The Pakenham area hosts a wide network of great education options that include Catholic schools such as St. Patrick’s Primary School, and a range of government schools such as Pakenham Hills Primary School and Pakenham Consolidated School.

Other schools include Lakeside College, Pakenham Secondary College, Pakenham Primary School, Pakenham Lakeside Primary School, Beaconhills College’s Pakenham campus, John Henry Primary School and Pakenham Springs Primary School.

Apart from its many primary and secondary schools, Pakenham hosts plentiful early learning centres for preschool-aged children. Among them are Aspire Early Education, Pakenham Early Education, Pakenham Kindergarten and Little Saints Early Learning Centre.

For adults, Pakenham is home to several training organisations catering to those looking to get professionally qualified.

SPORT Pakenham has a wide array of sporting opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy.

Cardinia Life is the town’s premier sports and recreation facility, boasting a 24/7 gym, a cycle studio, a group fitness studio, eight indoor sports courts, a 25-meter indoor pool, a warm water program pool, a toddler play pool, change rooms, a cafe and a crèche.

The Pakenham Sports Arena is a home for badminton in Victoria’s South East, offering a large space for exercise and competitive play.

Progress, business as usual If you’ve visited Pakenham lately, you’ve probably noticed the town centre is changing.

The Pakenham Revitalisation Project is beginning to take shape, with significant progress already visible at the Main Street Gateway and more improvements underway throughout the precinct.

While there is still work to be done, we’re already seeing the benefits of a revitalised town centre designed to support local businesses, improve accessibility, and create a more welcoming destination for residents and visitors.

The Stage 1 upgrades, extending from the railway line through the Main Street roundabout and into Drake Place, are nearing completion. The works have transformed the area with wider footpaths, safer pedestrian crossings, upgraded road and drainage infrastructure, improved lighting, new landscaping, and enhanced public amenities, creating a greener and more vibrant gateway to the heart of Pakenham.

Final works on Stage 1 are expected to be completed over the coming month, with existing light poles scheduled for removal and new lighting to be activated in the area, enabling final concreting and landscaping works to be completed.

Stages 2 and 3 are currently being delivered in smaller sections to minimise disruptions and impacts to businesses and the local community.

Construction is underway on the eastern car park in Drake Place, with works expected to move into the roadway along Drake Place in September 2026.

To support businesses ahead of the busy Christmas trading period, Council is prioritising completing upgrades in Drake Place, to ensure that the greatest number of upgraded parking spaces can be returned to the community. Construction works are also expected to be paused from December 2026 to early January 2027, to further support local businesses and provide ample

Planning continues to progress for the future stages of the Pakenham Revitalisation Project.

Stage 4 is progressing towards tender and will deliver a new connection into the town centre by extending John Street through to Henty Street.

Looking ahead, Stage 5 proposes to deliver streetscape upgrades to the Main Street Central precinct between the John Street and Station Street roundabouts. Stage 5 plans are currently being revised, and no changes are currently scheduled for Main Street Central at this stage.

Further information will be shared with the com-

munity as planning progresses.

As these exciting improvements continue to take shape, the businesses at the heart of Pakenham’s town centre remain open and ready to welcome you.

Council is working closely with contractors and businesses to maintain access during construction and minimise impacts wherever possible. Council is continuing to explore a range of initiatives to activate the town centre, support local businesses and attract more customers to the area.

spaces in and around Pakenham town centre? To make your visit easier, Council has developed an interactive parking map that helps visitors locate convenient parking options and plan their trip before they arrive.

Pakenham has changed enormously over the past four decades, growing from a small country town into the thriving community we know today.

It’s an algae takeover...

Lakeside residents are starting to become increasingly concerned about green algae starting to form at the well-known lake within Lakeside estate.

A photo was posted on social media on 10 August comparing a before-and-after overhead shot of the lake. The image shows the before shot with clear blue water, meanwhile, the newer photo taken shows multiple sludges of green algae forming in the lake.

Labor member for Pakenham, Emma Vulin MP, posted a letter to James Collin, Chief Executive Officer of Cardinia Shire, on 24 August expressing the frustration from residents she has received over the last six weeks.

“I understand that Cardinia Council recently undertook testing of the water at the lake with results coming back satisfactory,” Vulin said.

Lakeside residents are starting to question why the lake is growing algae.

“Residents advise, however, that the condition of the lake has significantly deteriorated over the past six weeks, “Local residents have also expressed their

frustrations to me over the inconsistent functioning of the fountain in the lake, “I would appreciate if Council could engage with local residents with the aim of finding permanent solutions to the issues around the amenity of the lake and the fountain.”

Concerns continued on social media by residents of the Lakeside area, with some even getting concerned about the wildlife.

In a statement, Director Infrastructure and Environment, Mick Barrett, said the algae is nontoxic to humans and wildlife.

“Lakeside Lake is regularly monitored through Council’s water testing program, and Council is continuing to monitor the algae closely, including undertaking additional testing.” he said.

“The algae is identified as macro filamentous algae, non-toxic to both humans and wildlife.

“This type of algae is not uncommon and can occur following significant rainfall events or sud-

den changes in water temperature.”

Cr Jack Kowarzik responded to a social media comment asking for his opinion on whether or not the lake fountain will run again and why the algae is forming.

“The fountain repeatedly failing has been extremely frustrating. When it broke initially, it was due to low water levels and age, and so a replacement was ordered,” he said.

“The new fountain was working swimmingly (pun intended) for a few months before low water levels caused it to suck up silt and debris, causing another issue.

“I think a practical solution would be to find a way to raise the minimum water level in a safe manner. We are organising replacement parts so it can function again.”

However, the Gazette has received reports from residents that the fountain is operational once more.

Worship disputes reaching VCAT

Beaconhills College’s national award Beaconhills College’s Year 9 Summit to School program has been named an Exemplary Program in the 2026 Outdoor Education Australia Awards.

The award recognises outstanding outdoor education programs that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, strong educational outcomes and a positive impact on students.

Of more than 500 nominations received for the award, only 2% were recognised as Exemplary Programs.

Entirely designed and delivered by Beaconhills College, the Summit to School program takes around 320 Year 9 students on a seven-day expedition across Gunaikurnai Country in Gippsland each year.

Starting at the summit of Mount Baw Baw, students make their way back to school through some of Victoria’s most stunning landscapes, combining hiking, mountain biking, white-water rafting and Indigenous cultural learning.

The program, which has increased in participation from around 67 per cent to more than 90 per cent, was recognised for its contemporary approach to outdoor education, balancing adventure and challenge with wellbeing, inclusion and a deeper connection to Country.

Head of Experiential Learning Lachlan Groh said the program was designed to build resilience and create meaningful experiences for students.

“A key priority is helping students enjoy and connect with the outdoors,” he said.

“The experience balances challenge with opportunities to slow down, reflect and engage with the environment and each other.”

Planning tensions over places of worship are increasingly reaching the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), with Cardinia not immune.

Cardinia Shire Council received a planning permit application in March this year for use of land at 13A and 13B Sharnet Circuit, Pakenham, for a place of assembly and internally illuminated signage.

The proposal sought to use an existing warehouse for activities including a function centre, library, place of worship and restricted place of assembly.

The proposal also sought approval for up to 750 patrons on the site, including large-scale events of between 250 and 750 attendees on up to 17 occasions each year.

The council said the site is within the Officer-Pakenham State Significant Industrial Precinct (SSIP), which has been identified by the Victorian Government as strategically important for industrial and employment-generating uses, and is partially affected by the Floodway Overlay.

Following assessment of the application against relevant planning controls and policies, the council refused the application on 1 May 2026 as the proposed use was inconsistent with planning policy objectives aimed at protecting and preserving State Significant Industrial Precinct land for industrial and employment purposes.

The applicant has lodged an application with the VCAT seeking a review of Council’s decision, with a hearing currently scheduled for December 2026.

Officer Sikh temple volunteer Harpreet Kandra knows firsthand the challenges of navigating the planning system for a place of worship.

The Officer Gurdwara spent almost two years going through the planning process after making an offer on its property in February 2017.

About 24 objectors took the proposal to VCAT, but the hearing did not proceed because they ultimately withdrew their opposition.

“Honestly, we consider it a feat of some sorts- a win for multi-culturalism,” Mr Kandra said.

“A victory for harmony; a day when knowledge won over ignorance; and of course a day of new friendships.”

Despite that outcome, he said the planning challenges facing places of worship had not eased and reflected a statewide problem.

Based on his review of Victorian cases from the past five years, he said about 11 place of worship matters had reached VCAT, with six applications allowed to proceed and five refused.

He said disputes were repeatedly being passed to the tribunal regardless of whether a council approved or rejected an application.

Mr Kandra was concerned that repeatedly sending disputes to the tribunal placed an additional burden on ratepayers and applicants.

By Ethan Henson The Senior Citizens Club announces a new leadership committee, with a few familiar faces to welcome them on board.

With 62 attendees on Monday 24 August, the Pakenham Senior Citizens Club met for another annual general meeting to discuss some important changes.

President of the club for three years, Sue Stacey, announced, effective immediately, that she will be stepping down.

Sue said she would like to thank everybody for having her as president of the club and that it has been an absolute honour to take on the role.

“You know, it’s been three years that I’ve had it all up, and it has been fun. There have been times when I wish to tear my hair out, but the year’s gone by, and it’s been quite good,” she said.

“We’ve had some outings, we’ve gone to see the sand sculptures, we’ve gone to the Noojee pub, it’s always a good one, “But also, last year’s been a hard year also because so many of our older members have passed away, “We always seem to be turning around and attending yet another funeral in the last 12 to 18 months. It’s been really quite difficult, “So my decree before I leave as president is that nobody in the next 12 months is permitted to pass away. Do you understand?”

After a joking and emotional speech, Sue called up Cardinia Mayor Cr Brett Owen, who announced the new committee and thanked Sue for her service as president.

Cardinia Shire Council is pushing for an overhaul of Victoria’s planning framework as growing faith communities struggle to find suitable places to gather and worship.

Councillors endorsed a motion from Westernport Ward councillor Trudi Paton on Monday 17 August calling on the Municipal Association of Victoria to advocate for a review of the state’s planning framework for places of worship.

The motion seeks to ensure places of worship are considered early in state-led precinct structure planning and activity centre planning for new and growing communities, while supporting stronger protections for productive agricultural land, green wedge land and state-significant industrial land.

The motion also advocates for clearer and more consistent statewide planning guidance, greater opportunities for co-location and shared use with other community facilities, and recognition of the important role places of worship play in fostering social connection, volunteering, charitable services and community resilience.

It comes amid tensions over the establishment of places of worship on green-wedge land, with community objections and planning disputes increasingly reaching the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Officer Sikh temple volunteer Harpreet Kandra said Cardinia’s changing population needed suitable spaces that offered more than religious services.

“The face of the shire is changing,” he said.

“These are more community centres rather than just a place of worship.”

Mr Kandra said councils should help applicants identify suitable sites and incorporate environmental and community benefits into their proposals.

He said land outside the urban growth boundary was often the only financially viable option for young faith communities because it offered more affordable space and sufficient parking.

Mr Kandra also rejected suggestions that multicultural organisations were buying greenwedge properties to “land bank” while waiting for planning controls to change.

Follow Baptist Church founding lead pastor Luke Williams supported protecting Cardinia’s green wedges but said the needs of faith communities must also be included in planning for population growth.

“Churches aren’t simply places where people attend a service on a Sunday; they can be significant community assets,” he said.

Churches and other faith communities are known to provide food programs, community meals, emergency assistance, pastoral care, social connection and partnerships with other community organisations.

“Much of this work happens quietly and without government funding, but it makes a real difference to people who are vulnerable or doing it tough,” Mr Williams said.

He said all community groups should have equal opportunities to establish places to gather, but current planning requirements often made that difficult.

“The challenge for Council and the planning system is to find appropriate locations and planning provisions that protect valuable green wedge land while also allowing communities, including faith communities, to establish the facilities they need to serve a growing population.”

The motion will now be submitted to the Municipal Association of Victoria for consideration.

Again, most hands were still raised when asked if they were over 45, given the demographic of the room.

Then the 450-strong crowd was asked to keep their hand up if they had been to the doctor in the past 12 months and had a PSA test for prostate cancer.

Only a few hands went down.

“That’s fantastic,” O’Loughlin said. “It shows the message is getting through.”

The first Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch was held in 2014. In the years since $820,000 has been raised for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia for research and awareness initiatives – and some also donated to local men’s heath causes through the Cardinia Community Foundation.

This year’s event is likely to add between $50,000 and $60,000 to that tally.

The crowd heard from PCFA chief of mission Professor Jeff Dunn and Berwick-based urologist Dr Munad Khan.

The day was compered by comedian Lehmo, who introduced special guests former AFL footballer and commentator Campbell Brown and Australia’s first Winter Olympic gold medallist Steven Bradbury.

Both presentations were entertaining and well received.

“There were a lot of laughs and everyone seemed to have a great time,” O’Loughlin said.

$2b SRL savings spruiked The Labor Government has announced it will be going ahead with the build of the Suburban Rail Loop, and claims they’re shaving off some money.

A statement was released on 25 August regarding the current state of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) and how much it is now going to cost.

It is now estimated to cost $33.3 billion after the State Government identified $1 billion in immediate savings.

However, the State Government has expressed that they wish to save another $1 billion in savings from an ‘independent review’ to bring the total cost to $32.3 billion.

But the review is not going to slow any current work down, and it will continue to build as planned, and everything will remain on schedule.

This includes starting with unnecessary additions, including not proceeding with the construction of an underground station at Box Hill and Glen Waverley.

Along with no longer including the ‘unneeded’ second station entrance at Clayton or any complex pedestrian bridges in Burwood and Cheltenham.

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll has commented on the matter of reducing costs, saying “he respects your money”.

“The SRL will be built on time. Today’s changes mean it will be built under budget,” he said.

As of next year, the Victorian Government will move the SRL Authority and its work to the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority (VIDA).

They believe this will bring the expertise together, as VIDA has delivered on the Metro Tunnel and other major projects across the state.

Claiming this decision is going to reduce any form of duplication on the project and save taxpayers money.

The Suburban Rail Loop was announced in August 2018 and has since gone through a string of controversies over whether or not the government can deliver on the project.

The State Government hopes to save Victorian taxpayers money.

Royal Commission into building sector

By Ethan Henson Premier Ben Carroll has called a Royal Commission regarding crime and misconduct in Victoria’s construction industry.

In a statement on 20 August, Carroll said Victorians deserve to know the truth about why crime is being committed on building sites, and who is allowing it to happen.

Carroll said his government will act on the Royal Commission’s findings, so they may prevent it from happening in the future.

“The Commission’s role is to uncover misconduct and to make recommendations,” he said.

“It will follow the money, examine the systems that were exploited, and tell us plainly what went wrong and what must change.”

However, he reminded Victorians that the Royal Commission does not have the power to charge or prosecute someone.

Instead, Carroll will be establishing an Office of the Special Prosecutor, which is a “dedicated, embedded resource” that will work alongside the Royal Commission.

“When wrongdoing is uncovered, it is investigated, and it is pursued, and people face consequences,” he said.

“We will legislate to create the Office of the Special Prosecutor to ensure it has access to all

the information and evidence it needs to do its job.

“Findings will not sit on a shelf. They will be acted on. I will appoint the Special Prosecutor once the office is created in statute in September.

“I will be taking advice from the Commissioner on that appointment, and we will legislate for the Special Prosecutor to have their own prosecution powers.”

Along with this decision, Carroll has appointed former South Australian Supreme Court judge Christopher Kourakis, AC, to head the Royal Commission.

Carroll continued to say the terms of reference are ‘broad and expansive’ for the Royal

Commission, saying “nothing is off limits.”

“They cover the conduct of the CFMEU, construction companies, labour hire firms, consortia and criminal actors on Victoria’s major projects.

“They cover the role of government; the executive, government departments and delivery agencies in overseeing the projects.

“Critically, the terms of reference make it a matter for the Commissioner to decide whose actions and whose knowledge are relevant to the matters under investigation.”

The Commission is expected to cost up to $50 million, with Carroll also announcing the government will be fast-tracking changes to expand IBAC’s jurisdiction.

Rotary debutantes shine Now in its 40th year, the Rotary Club of Pakenham Debutante Ball proudly celebrated this special milestone by presenting two wonderful evenings of elegance, tradition and celebration in 2026.

Held at the Southside Racing Club, Pakenham the first evening on Friday, 14 August brought together family and friends to celebrate 12 debutantes and their partners from Edenbrook Secondary College and Patterson River Secondary College. The debutantes were proudly presented to Rotary Club of Pakenham President Tim Mepstead and his wife, Bronwyn, with Jason Bradley acting as MC for the evening.

The celebrations continued on Saturday, 15 August, with a further 17 debutantes and their partners taking part in the second evening.

They were warmly introduced to family and friends by Lakeside College School Captains Jamie Cox and Blayne McGrath.

The debutantes were again proudly presented to Rotary Club of Pakenham President Tim Mepstead and his wife, Bronwyn, with Tanya Dineer acting as MC for the evening.

Book Week with Violet Li 1. What genres do you enjoy reading most, and why?

Fiction, because all those subtle emotions, feelings, and thoughts that you cannot easily tell people in your life are in the fictions. I find comfort there knowing I am not the only one who shares that untold experience.

2. What book are you currently reading, what drew you to it, and what lessons or insights have you taken from it?

I just finished the 670-page ‘The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny’ by India-American novelist Kiran Desai during the weekend. It was shortlisted by the Booker Prize 2025. The novel, set largely from the 1990s to just after 9/11, follows two upper-middle-class Indian students who go to the United States: Sunny, who eventually works a fairly mundane journalism job in New York, and Sonia, a creative-writing graduate who returns to India after struggling in America. Their families once try to arrange a match between them, it fails, and yet the two eventually find their way to each other, separate, and come together again.

The central condition both characters share is loneliness. Their alienation comes from family, romance, race, migration and their country’s history. They have left one place hoping to find something better, only to discover that the supposedly better place has its own exclusions and humiliations. Going home does not solve the problem either because they have changed too much to fully belong there either.

I was immediately drawn to the story because I started here in Melbourne as an international student, and I also found my own loneliness along the way. It was a relief to see my story being represented on the paper. And just like them, I am getting better along the way, trying to find power in the loneliness.

Although the story is set about thirty years ago, I found the experience of young international students surprisingly contemporary. Our anxieties about belonging, identity and isolation have barely changed. That is probably why I connected with Sonia and Sunny so strongly. In a strange way, reading about their loneliness made me feel less lonely myself.

What makes the novel powerful is that Desai does not stop at diagnosing the problem. She patiently shows Sonia and Sunny trying to reclaim themselves: recovering their identities, learning

The novel at its core is about immigration in America. We are living in a time of constantly debating whether immigration should be allowed here in Australia. The conversation rarely goes beyond questions of numbers and policies.

When immigrants suffer mentally, they are told to go back to their countries and stop complaining. Maybe it is time to start to talk about the more profound and human aspects of immigration.

3. What is your favourite book of all time, and why does it stand out to you?

The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler. Hu-

man beings just form connection at weird times.

4. Has a book or author ever changed your perspective or had a lasting impact on you?

I read The Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk during my honeymoon to Georgia and Turkey earlier this year. I never read a love that could be this passionate, destructive, yet ignorant. He loved her so deeply, yet he never saw her.

What a marvellous concept.

5. Where and when is your favourite place and time to read?

My house and airplane. Nighttime is my favourite time to read, but sometimes I find it hard to fall asleep after active thinking from reading.

6. What are the most rewarding and

challenging aspects of being a reader?

You get cured by reading, but you need to cure yourself again by eventually disassociating with the stories.

7. What books would you recommend to others in the community, and why?

The Bee Stings by Paul Murray and Freedom by Jonathan Franzen. Family is an inescapable concept, especially the dysfunctional ones.

8. As we celebrate Book Week, what does reading mean to you?

Reading makes me stop thinking about myself and my reality. Yet when I am back, I find myself better at thinking about myself and my reality.

Working households seek relief as bill pressures mount

By Violet Li More working households are struggling to pay their bills, as revealed at a cost-of-living support event in Hampton Park.

More than 800 people poured into Hampton Park’s Bring Your Bills event at Arthur Wren Hall on Tuesday 25 August.

Organiser South East Community Links reported that growing numbers of working households seeking help as cost-of-living pressures spread beyond those on very low incomes.

SECL advocacy and engagement lead Jonathan Elias said about 1500 individuals and families were supported throughout the event, including more than 800 people who attended in person.

More than $2.2 million in community debt was addressed, including $40,000 waived entirely and almost $100,000 in grants and concessions accessed.

More than half of those attending sought help with gas and electricity bills, while mortgages and personal loans accounted for a large share of the financial pressure presented.

Mr Elias said the turnout reflected the level of unmet need across Hampton Park and the wider City of Casey.

“Importantly, it demonstrates that financial hardship is not necessarily confined to people on very low incomes,” he said.

“It is affecting working households who are actively looking for ways to reduce bills, access concessions, negotiate debt and make their household budgets stretch further.”

She went 13 weeks without income, relied on food parcels and stayed at a friend’s home because she could not afford petrol or other essentials.

She attended the event seeking help with credit-card debt, fines, phone expenses and ambulance bills.

“It’d be handy to go on to something that would give me a little bit more time to work on my own mental health. There’s not a lot of services out there for free, like psychiatrists and all that,” she said.

“You only get six sessions. You talk to somebody about all the help you need, and then you have to go and talk to somebody else and start all over again. It just it keeps bringing back traumas.”

The local found events like Bring Your Bills ‘very handy’.

“I suffer from anxiety and depression. It’s very hard to talk on the phone or even kinda get myself to make a phone call to deal with things,” she said.

“I’m hoping I can just get a few things taken care of so I can just concentrate on my own mental health and not have to worry so much about everybody calling and demanding money that I don’t have.”

Pensioner Jennifer White returned after receiving help with about $10,000 in debts at an earlier Bring Your Bills event in Pakenham.

“I had been scammed, and I got into a lot of debt through being scammed and being elderly, and my health was bad. I kept getting debt collectors calling me all the time, and I ignored them because they were pestering me,” she said.

“My son said, come here, they’re holding this thing at Pakenham, and you can get a fuel voucher. I had no idea what it was, and I came, and I was astounded by what happened.

“I spent hours here talking to people, and it was amazing.

“I was able to sleep that night for the first time in months.”

This time, she spoke with ANZ about a disputed $5000 loan connected to the scam and received advice about housing options as her son prepared to sell the home where she was living.

“I can go home and feel peaceful today,” she said.

However, not every attendee left satisfied.

One single mother said she discovered that a housing application she believed had been

started at a previous event had never been opened.

She nevertheless received help applying for a government utility relief grant this time.

The woman, who was raising two children, said financial pressure sometimes left the household eating noodles to get by.

South East Water customer-care team leader Avinish Walia described Hampton Park as one of the busiest Bring Your Bills events she had attended.

She said many customers were struggling to afford water bills, while others had eligible concessions that had never been added to their accounts.

Staff helped attendees register concessions, apply for utility relief grants and establish payment plans.

“There is a gap in the knowledge,” Ms Walia said.

“Many come here and they have a concession, but it’s not added on the account.”

Bring Your Bills events bring financial counsellors, banks, utility companies, telecommunications providers and community services together to offer free, face-to-face assistance.

Sikh Volunteers provided free lunch for the Hampton Park event.

In 2025, the program delivered $8.1 million in financial relief across four south east events, including $350,000 in debts waived and $550,000 of grants, concessions and hardship payment plans.

Farewell to local hero Green wedge shake up coming

By Afraa Kori Upper Beaconsfield is mourning the death of respected CFA leader and community stalwart Eric Bumpstead OAM, whose contribution spanned more than six decades.

Mr Bumpstead died on Friday 21 August, aged 93, leaving a legacy of courage, humility and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

The Guys Hill resident joined the Upper Beaconsfield Fire Brigade in October 1957 and served as captain for 24 years, from 1973 to 1997 — the longest tenure in the brigade’s history.

Current brigade captain Ian Pinney remembered Mr Bumpstead as a gentleman and trusted mentor whose influence extended far beyond Upper Beaconsfield.

“He helped so many people in the brigade learn their craft, understand the values of firefighting and the methods in which to do it,” Mr Pinney said.

“He imparted his knowledge not just to our brigade, but across the wider CFA community.

“He would provide help to anyone.”

Mr Bumpstead’s desire to volunteer began as a boy when he fought fires alongside his father while they delivered meat by horse and cart for the Pakenham Butchery.

After settling in Guys Hill, he joined the local brigade — beginning a lifelong commitment to protecting his community.

His leadership was tested most severely during the devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires on 16 February 1983.

As brigade captain and incident controller, Mr Bumpstead was at the centre of the response as a massive fire front tore through Upper Beaconsfield, destroying 180 homes and claiming 21 lives, including 12 firefighters.

“Ash Wednesday would stand head and shoulders above everything else he did,” Mr Pinney said.

“He was right in the thick of things when it happened and in the ensuing days, weeks, months and even years.

“He played a very important role in the community’s resilience and recovery.”

With communication lines down and the town traumatised, Mr Bumpstead worked to ensure residents received the information and assistance they desperately needed.

His work continued long after the flames were extinguished as he helped guide the community through years of grief and rebuilding.

Mr Bumpstead later advocated for a permanent cairn and memorial park to honour those who died in the disaster.

In the weeks following the fires, he met then Prince Charles and Princess Diana during their visit to Cockatoo and surrounding fire-affected communities.

Despite the recognition he received, Mr Pinney said Mr Bumpstead never sought attention and was always quick to credit those around him.

“He often shied away from the spotlight,” he

“He would say he was part of a good team, and that was true but he was an exceptional leader.”

Mr Bumpstead was also considered a pioneer for women in firefighting.

At a time when many of the brigade’s male volunteers worked outside the district, he recognised the town was vulnerable during the day and began training local women as operational firefighters.

The move faced resistance, but Mr Bumpstead persisted.

The first seven women he trained became affectionately known as “Eric’s Angels” and proved their capability during the Ash Wednesday bushfires.

“He was ahead of his time,” Mr Pinney said.

“He was a visionary who could recognise what was needed when other people couldn’t see it.”

Mr Bumpstead received recognition from Women and Firefighting Australasia and was shortlisted for the Champion of Change award at the 2023 national AFAC conference.

His contribution extended well beyond the brigade.

He was a founding member of the Upper Beaconsfield Association, a former president of the Upper Beaconsfield Men’s Shed and served on several land management and fire prevention committees.

He was named Upper Beaconsfield Citizen of the Year in 1977 and Pakenham Shire Citizen of the Year in 1984, before receiving Cardinia Shire Council’s Stan Henwood Award in 2018.

In 2023, he received a CFA 65-year service medal.

The following year, Mr Bumpstead was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his contribution to the community.

True to his character, he accepted the honour on behalf of everyone who had stood beside him.

“I don’t do things for medals,” he told the Gazette at the time.

“It’s never a one-man thing.”

Mr Pinney said Mr Bumpstead’s death was a significant loss for the brigade and the wider community.

“It’s hard to lose someone of Eric’s quality,” he said.

The Upper Beaconsfield Fire Brigade extended its deepest sympathies to Mr Bumpstead’s family and friends.

“Eric will be sadly missed by all who knew him,” the brigade said.

Cardinia Shire Council is looking to create a shared vision for the future of its rural land and landscapes through the preparation of new Green Wedge Management Plans.

Councils are required to prepare plans to guide the management of Green Wedge land to identify the rural values, uses and land to be protected and create strategies that protect, enhance and manage the identified values.

The non-urban land that surrounds urban development is separated from urban areas by the Urban Growth Boundary, which was put in place by the Victorian Government in 2002.

Green Wedges play a critical role in protecting rural landscapes, supporting agriculture and local industries.

Ensuring these areas continue to contribute to the health and wellbeing and sustainable outcomes for current and future generations.

Each plan responds to the unique features and functions of these green wedge areas, including their agricultural uses, forestry and aquaculture, and tourism and recreation.

Cardinia Shire Council Mayor, Cr Brett Owen said Green Wedge Management Plans are an important and useful tool for managing growth.

“Cardinia Shire is a major food producing region, and we play a significant role in Victoria’s and Australia’s food security,” he said.

“Preserving and supporting productive non-urban land remains a key priority for Council, as our community continues to see rapid growth, “It is important to find the balance between the need for development and the preservation of non-urban land, “Green Wedge Management Plans help guide that balance by protecting important agricultural land and environmental assets.”

Council is preparing Green Wedge Management Plans for the Yarra, Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, and Southern Ranges regions.

The Yarra, Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Green Wedge region includes land in Nangana, Clematis, Mount Burnett and Avonsleigh.

While the Southern Ranges include land in Pakenham, Officer, Beaconsfield Upper, Emerald, Bunyip, Garfield, Tynong, Nar Nar Goon, Maryknoll, and more.

Council is now inviting all community members to share their views as part of the first stage of community consultation.

Urgent investment calls Cardinia Shire Council is seeking critical funding support ahead of the State election for priority road sealing projects to improve safety, strengthen emergency access and enhance liveability for the community.

With one of the largest unsealed road networks in Melbourne, Cardinia Shire Council is responsible for maintaining more than 800 kilometres of unsealed roads – roughly the distance from Melbourne to Sydney.

For many residents, these roads are part of everyday life. But they also create ongoing challenges, including dust, potholes, rough road surfaces, safety risks, emergency access issues and costly maintenance.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Brett Owen said sealing priority roads was essential for communities right across the shire.

“Unsealed roads continue to create safety, access and reliability challenges for communities across our shire, particularly during emergencies,” Mayor Owen said.

“When every minute counts, the condition of a road can make a real difference to how quickly people can leave, and how quickly emergency services can reach those who need help.

“By sealing priority roads, we can make everyday travel safer and more reliable, while improving emergency access and giving residents, emergency services and volunteers greater confidence during severe conditions.”

Mayor Owen said Cardinia Shire was one of Melbourne’s most disaster-prone municipalities, with communities facing significant risks from bushfire, flooding and severe storms.

“In the Dandenong Ranges, bushfire risk is a major concern, with the entire area included in the Victorian Government’s Bushfire At-Risk Register. In the hills, major storms can quickly

“And in the southern parts of Cardinia Shire, communities near the Bunyip River and Western Port Bay also face flooding risks.

“When severe weather strikes, unsealed roads can quickly become damaged, unsafe or difficult to access, creating additional challenges for residents and emergency responders.”

President of the Cockatoo Road Action Group for the 21st century (CRAG 21), Paul, said residents living on unsealed roads dealt with constant dust, road damage and safety concerns.

“Whenever there’s heavy rain, our driveway washes away, and the road continually gets ruts.

We live on a road that gets, by Council’s count, 250 to 300 cars a day, so in summer we get dust to the point that it’s a fog. It becomes a major health and safety issue,” Paul said.

“Ninety-five per cent of the population around here want their street sealed, or at least the main access roads in and out of their streets sealed.”

Emerald resident David said narrow roads, deep drains, potholes and limited access were a major concern for residents, particularly in emergencies.

“We’re only 50km from the city but we feel for-

gotten out here,” David said.

“The biggest problem we have is the number of potholes, dust when it’s dry, mud and potholes when it’s wet, the depth of the drains that are along the dirt roads, and roads that aren’t wide enough for a car and a truck to pass safely.

“The three streets in our area have only one way in and out. If there’s a bushfire, we’re locked in, and with the depth of drains and potholes, and the intersection of the three roads, it’s a real concern.”

Mayor Owen said sealing key routes would deliver significant safety, access and liveability benefits for the community.

“Sealing priority roads would help create safer, more reliable routes for our community, while reducing the need for ongoing grading, drainage works and repairs following severe weather events.

“As one of Victoria’s fastest-growing municipalities, Council cannot deliver these projects alone. Support from other levels of government is needed to accelerate the sealing of priority roads and help communities access safer, more resilient road connections.

The call for investment to seal priority roads forms part of Council’s advocacy campaign ahead of the State Election, aimed at securing the infrastructure and services needed to support Cardinia Shire’s growing population.

Residents fed up with unsealed roads

“They’ve got kids that are walking down, go to the school, catch the school bus at the end of the road, “They have to walk on the same road that you’ve got bloody trucks and everybody driving down gravel roads. So, it’s a significant safety issue as well, “People can’t open their windows in summer because you’ve got, you get the house full of dust.”

Keen said the council has started to put in the framework to seal 60km worth of roads in the Hills area with the Local Street Sealing Initiative (LSSI) programme.

A programme that hopes to build a consistent, long-term framework to guide how residential unsealed road upgrades may be considered across the shire.

The LSSI programme hopes to provide a financially structured framework that includes property owner engagement.

The petition was expected to be debated in Parliament on 25 August by David Limbrick MP.

A petition to fix The Hills’ unsealed roads has reached over 2000 signatures and will go ahead and be submitted to Parliament.

On 13 August, a petition containing 2042 signatures was delivered to Libertarian leader David Limbrick MP regarding the condition of unsealed roads in Cardinia Shire.

Limbrick said people living 45 kilometres from the CBD shouldn’t be driving on dirt roads, and the Government is failing to understand the health and safety issue behind it.

“After light showers, these roads become slippery. But after larger downpours, they become streams that flood buildings and cause septic tanks to overflow,” he said.

“And when it’s not raining, they have to deal with dust and mould.”

“It is rare to get 2000 signatures for a local issue like this. I will present this petition to Parliament shortly, and I hope all parties take note and put this firmly on the election agenda.”

Keen and the Road Action Group spent months trying to get the signatures, going from Emerald, Gembrook, Upper Beaconsfield all the way down to Tynong to sign the petition.

However, Keen said it isn’t just the damage and pothole issues with vehicles residents have been facing in the Hills.

He said there is a big issue with the dust and rocks being kicked up around residential housing along stretches of gravel roads.

“We see a lot of traffic, and it’s both the dust side and the safety, and there’s no footpaths,”

Officer takes down Tigers

By Justin Schwarze Officer will begin preparations for its first-ever Outer East Premier Division final after the Roos secured their spot in the postseason in style by steamrolling Woori Yallock in round 18.

At face value, it’s a remarkable effort for Officer to finish fourth with a record of 10-8 amidst six weeks of an uncertain future and a shock coaching call.

And despite Nathan Allen knowing that Saturday could’ve been his last at the helm, albeit unlikely, he and his playing group put together four strong quarters to comfortably down the Tigers.

It was a big blow for Woori Yallock, who needed a win or Monbulk to lose to hold its position in the five, but to the Tigers’ misfortune, neither transpired. Roos skipper Brent Moloney put Officer on the front foot in the opening minutes at Rob Porter Reserve, receiving a handball from Diesel Beck in front of goal before putting it through.

A few minutes later, it was Beck again shrugging a tackle and finding Hunter Beaumont by hand, who walked in another from close range.

Kane Thompson got Woori Yallock going with a bouncing finish at the other end, but Lachie Ward kicked Officer’s third as he got out the back of a marking contest and ran it home.

Thompson then produced a major highlight, threading the needle from the pocket right on the boundary line for his second.

But the Roos were unfazed, winning it straight out of the middle and pushing it forward, resulting in Ward booting his second.

And it didn’t take long for him to get his third as he collected the ball cleanly in stride before putting it through on the run.

In red-time, Antonio Quach capped off a dominant quarter for the hosts as he wheeled onto his right boot and belted home the Roos’ sixth for the term.

At quarter time, Officer led 6.3 (39) to 2.4 (16).

The visitors struck first in the second term as Jack Soroczynski nailed a set shot, but Sam Hoghton answered with one of his own.

It gave Officer a 8.4 (52) to 5.7 (37) buffer at halftime.

Playing for their season, the Tigers looked to get back into the contest as Noah Dare guided home a set shot at the five-minute mark of the third.

But the Roos continued to have all the answers with Quach finding space in forward 50 to take a bounce and bend through a tidy finish.

Jackson Honey then kicked truly from an angle, and Officer was rolling.

To round out the quarter, Luke Smaluch used some fancy footwork to weave his way through traffic and evade multiple defenders before finding the goals off a step.

It gave his side a big boost as the Roos led 11.8 (74) to 6.9 (45) at the last change.

Some elite physicality from Moloney to corral the footy and snap over his shoulder was the dagger 10 minutes into the last with Officer rolling into

the 13.13 (91) to 7.13 (55) result.

“It was a good rehearsal for this week,” senior playing coach Allen said.

“They were fighting to stay in, so it was just perfect for us to play a team that’s been there every year and knew how to win finals.

“We were really clean at the contest in the first quarter and obviously our go-to is on the outside.

“Once we released it from stoppage on the inner layer, we were off.

“It helps when you kick the first one and it kept rolling on.”

Ward ended his afternoon with four goals, bringing his season tally past the 40-mark, while Moloney and Quach each kicked a pair.

The return of Hoghton into the forward line has opened up space and made the Roos a versatile threat with goalkicking options spread throughout the forward 50.

Officer is averaging 120.1 points per game over its last four games, and Allen had a simple reason as to why.

“It’s probably the continuity,” he remarked.

“They’re all getting to play together.

“We didn’t have the focal point this season so we needed to figure out what it was going to look like for us.

“I think with Sammy coming back, he can play small or tall and he creates a mismatch with whoever he plays on.

“Then that allows us to take a little bit of pressure off Soup (Moloney) or a little bit of pressure off Wardy, and they’re all feeding off each other.

“It makes it harder for defences to settle.”

Officer will face Monbulk at Woori Yallock Reserve on Sunday in the elimination final.

AROUND THE GROUNDS Joel Garner played a historic game at Wandin North Reserve as he torched Upwey Tecoma himself by booting an astounding bag of 23 goals.

Garner’s final numbers don’t even sound real, finishing with 37 disposals, 24 marks and 23 snags to amass a ridiculous 338 ranking points.

The Bulldogs rode on the back of their Richmond VFL star to win in resounding fashion, 31.21 (207) to 5.8 (38).

Gembrook Cockatoo was handed its 18thstraight defeat by Olinda Ferny Creek as the Bloods put the Brookers to the sword at home.

The hosts piled on 6.5 in the first term to no score to lead 41-0 after one.

From there, it was all Bloods and they jumped into second on the table with the 22.19 (151) to 6.3 (39) triumph.

Nick Keegan kicked seven for Olinda.

Tyson Henry booted a winner for Warburton Millgrove with the second-last kick of the game as the Burras upset Mount Evelyn 11.14 (80) to 11.11 (77).

Warburton Millgrove was impressive by clawing its way back from a 21-point quarter time deficit and an eight-point three-quarter time hole.

Jack Farrugia booted four for the winners.

Joel Wensley’s nine-goal haul was enough for Monbulk to get past Healesville 14.13 (97) to 7.10 (52) and leapfrog Woori Yallock into the finals position.

Roos ready for fiery finals challenge against hot Hawks

By Justin Schwarze A venture into the unknown for Officer awaits on Sunday as the Roos will fight for their season in the Outer East Premier Division elimination final against Monbulk at Woori Yallock.

It’s the first time Officer has made a finals appearance since 2019, when it defeated Mount Evelyn by 61 points in the then Division 1 elimination final.

With a young group that is inexperienced on the big stage, senior playing coach Nathan Allen noted keeping forward pressure as the recipe for success.

“We want to play the game in our half and apply pressure in the finals,” he said.

“The longer you can keep it in your half, the more you build pressure.”

The Roos and Hawks split their two meetings this season, but if you examine the results closer, it’s a matchup that Allen’s men have performed better in.

Officer has led at the conclusion of seven of the eight quarters in the two games, with the only exception being the end of the fourth term of the round four meeting.

The Roos have also held 20-plus point leads on both occasions, so it’s certainly a matchup they’ll be confident in.

The point of difference comes in the battle between Officer’s back six and Monbulk’s forward line. The Hawks have often struggled to score this season, ranking sixth in the competition in points per game and Joel Wensley is the deep target that’s done a lot of the heavy lifting inside 50 with 40 goals this year.

Otherwise, they rely heavily on their strong midfield unit getting off the leash and pushing forward to hit the scoreboard.

“They’re a really strong contest team and they’re really powerful when they break away from stoppage,” Allen noted of Monbulk.

“It’s about nullifying that and evening the contest work.

“From there, as long as we’re not just playing

“We created pressure and forced them back and so it became long kicks down the line.

“They have a few really good runners that can break the line.

“We have to work both ways and transition running has been really good lately so we’ve got to continue to bring that.

“The main thing we’ve also focused on re-

cently is concentrating.

“We can be awesome for long patches of the game but it’s just being able to lock in for that full 30 minutes per quarter.

“There’s been times throughout the year where we drop away for five minutes and sides penalise us.

“As long as we can concentrate and play our way for 30 minutes and reset each quarter, we’ll be fine.”

Officer’s versatile forward group will be a handful for the Hawks’ defenders as Sam Hoghton, Lachie Ward and Brent Moloney provide the three main targets while others drift inside 50

and can find the goals.

The midfield is also clicking, with ball winners Luke Smaluch and Diesel De Santis connecting well with outside runners Antonio Quach and Ryan Hutton.

The four ‘Js’ will be the pillars down back as Josh Westra, Josh Brown, Jackson Honey and Jake Gains provide the Roos with a tall and aerial defence.

In the last meeting with the Hawks, the back line kept Wensley to one goal and Monbulk struggled as a result, managing just two majors for the entire game.

Back-to-back for Brookers

By Justin Schwarze Gembrook Cockatoo saluted and eclipsed backto-back premierships in the Outer East Veterans competition with a 21-point victory over Monbulk in the grand final on Sunday.

Facing a tough task against the minor premiers on their home deck in front of a massive crowd, the Brookers had to battle from behind after conceding four goals in the first term.

The visitors kicked the first as Gembrook legend Andrew Shipp cleverly toe-poked one off the deck inside the opening minute.

But the Hawks brushed it off as Benjamin Magnay snuck one over the line from distance before Shaun Brooks was caught high and capitalised by burying his set shot.

Shipp then marked in the pocket and played on to bend home his personal and the team’s second.

Monbulk immediately won it out of the middle and Tim Wragg marked on the lead before goaling from 25 out.

Steven Nuutinen added one more before quarter time with a nice finish, boosting the Hawks to the 4.1 (25) to 2.1 (13) advantage at quarter time.

However, Gembrook Cockatoo swung the game in the second term by managing the only three majors of the quarter.

It started with Todd Pye making no mistakes from a short range after drawing a free kick, before Michael ‘Spud’ Firrito was illegally held off the ball at half forward.

The contact caused a boilover and a short melee, resulting in the Brookers being awarded a 25-metre penalty which allowed Firrito to settle himself and split the middle.

The Brookers knocked off minor premier Monbulk in the grand final to eclipse the premiership.

He picked himself up and nailed a third-consecutive goal for his side.

As the teams headed for the rooms for the halftime break, Gembrook Cockatoo had snatched the lead 5.3 (33) to 4.2 (26).

The third had plenty of nerves and jitters as neither team could find the big sticks, but Shipp provided the breakthrough moment at the 15-minute mark by kicking truly after a solid mark.

It put the Brookers 13 points up at the final change, 6.6 (42) to 4.5 (29).

Shipp was starting to tear the game apart, as he showed his class by cleanly picking up the

footy and ground level and spinning out of a tackle before handing off to Dylan Trevorah.

Trevorah ran into space and banged home the visitors’ fifth unanswered goal.

Five minutes later, Shipp found Mat Slattery by hand, and the Brookers were destined for early celebrations as Slattery’s textbook snap saw the lead swell to 27 points.

Shipp added one more for good measure as he was the recipient of a 25-metre penalty, putting the icing on the cake by putting it through from the line.

The superstar’s four-goal haul earned him best-on-ground honours as the Brookers hoisted the flag by winning 9.8 (62) to 6.5 (41).

It was the second-straight grand final triumph for Adam Mitchell’s side after defeating Belgrave in a two-point thriller in last year’s decider.

Lions take on Blues while Bombers do battle with Rebels

By Justin Schwarze Pakenham will be eyeing its first grand final appearance since 2019 when it takes on Seville in this week’s Outer East Division 1 second semifinal.

The Lions come in refreshed and at near-full strength after a week off, while the Blues roll in with momentum after a strong 29-point victory over Alexandra in the qualifying final.

Don Road Sporting Complex’s big deck in Healesville sets the backdrop for a battle that’ll be decided in the middle.

Pakenham’s on-ball group has been a major catalyst as to why the Lions went through the home-and-away season undefeated, with leaders such as Luke Ryan, Rhys Clacy and Bailey Stiles all having an impact.

Justin Stanton and his staff are also very confident in the fitness of Aden Quirk, who’s a certainty to return after being out of the lineup since round 13 with a knee injury.

Quirk adds another dimension of ball-winning to the guts as a clearance tank and bruising inside mid.

Both meetings this season were decided by about three goals, with Pakenham prevailing in both encounters.

The Lions’ forward line has held up well against the Blues this season, with Matt Ryan and Mason Hall both booting multiple goals in both matchups, while Sam Cachia helped himself to three majors in the most recent game.

But moving the footy efficiently into the forward line will be key to controlling territory, applying forward pressure and ultimately hitting the scoreboard.

Often Stanton will rotate players into the forward line from the middle as damaging ballusers Tanner Stanton and Luke Ryan are more than capable of finding the goals.

Mason Hall will be the X-factor for the Lions after the dynamic forward/mid has evolved his game to spend time in the middle while still being lethal roving the forward 50.

Hall performed very well in the finals series last year and getting him involved early usually sets him up.

After a brilliant 2025 in which he kicked 44 goals and was the main target, Cachia has unselfishly made way for the arrival of Matt Ryan.

Cachia’s output has been 27 majors this season, and he’s kicked three-or-more goals in a game on six different occasions this year.

However, he’s built for the big stages as three of those times were against teams in the top five.

With the best defensive option usually assigned to Ryan, Cachia will be pivotal in Pakenham’s prospects of opening other avenues towards goal.

Joel Koger in the ruck alongside Jack Nolan and Mark Cecere are the main threats through the middle for Seville as all are capable of laying bone-crunching tackles and winning the footy at ground level.

The forward line is slightly depleted with star Josh Neal’s status in doubt, but talls Domenic Aloi and Nathan O’Keefe are in blistering form.

Aloi was kept goalless in the qualifying final but had booted 29 goals in his previous six games leading in.

O’Keefe is catching stride, kicking 29 goals in five-straight contests after being held goalless against Pakenham in round 13.

This includes a bag of six to sink the Rebels last week.

The young Lions back line will have its hands full, but the round 13 matchup will fill them with confidence.

Aloi and O’Keefe combined for just one goal total as Cooper Sheppard and James Lee did a fantastic job.

The big ground at Healesville also plays into Pakenham’s hands, as it is very similar in size to Toomuc Reserve, whereas the Blues play on a smaller and more narrow ground.

Justin Stanton credits his side’s fitness as one of its strongest attributes, so running out the game is always a key for the Lions.

BOMBERS TAKE FORM TO REBELS On Sunday, Emerald will face Alexandra in the first semi-final at Don Road Sporting Complex.

The Bombers are full of confidence after comfortably knocking off Yarra Glen in the elimination final, while the Rebels are licking their wounds after being handed defeat by Seville.

Josh Edwards adds a solid third option, and the Rebels are capable of quickly turning one major into a barrage.

Emerald relies on goals from its midfield, which it has the advantage in on paper over Alexandra.

Ewan Wadsworth, Jordan Donadel, Brad Pepi and Dale Karacsonyi all give the Bombers different looks at stoppage but all are capable of drifting forward and hitting the scoreboard.

The ruck battle will be extremely entertaining as the league’s two premier ruckmen clash in Emerald’s Steve Kapahnke and Alexandra’s Lachlan Nankervis.

Both are ranked in the top-three for hitouts this season and provide their side with physicality and elite ruck craft.

By Justin Schwarze A very disappointing conclusion to the season unfolded for the Pakenham Warriors Women as they were thrashed by Sherbrooke in the Big V Championship semi-final on Saturday.

At Upwey and District Stadium, the Warriors succumbed to elite pressure and an active defensive effort from the Suns as Pakenham threw the ball away 27 times in the contest.

The worrying signs began in the opening term, as Pakenham shot the ball at a respectable clip and scored a healthy 12 points in the paint, but seven giveaways allowed Sherbrooke to gain control.

The Suns scored 13 points off Warrior turnovers, capitalising on the finals intensity and mistakes they were forcing.

The Warriors looked to regroup at quarter time, trailing by just eight at 23-15, but issues taking care of the basketball carried over into the second.

Pakenham turned the ball over on three of its first four possessions as the hosts extended their buffer to double-digits.

It ended up being a disastrous term for the visitors, who threw it away 10 times and scored just 13 points for the period.

Sherbrooke scored 27 on the other end, including 12 off the back of turnovers, to lead imposingly 50-28 at halftime.

The second-placed Suns were now hitting their stride, taking the third term 19-10 before cruising to the dominant 92-52 win.

Sherbrooke’s elite defensive pressure caused all sorts of issues for Pakenham. (Tash Warden) Stella O’Loughlin top-scored for the Warriors with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, but she gave the ball away nine times.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett added 10 points as the only other Pakenham player in double-figures.

Oliana Squires and Emma Pearce put the Warriors away with 20 points each.

Sherbrooke advanced to the grand final, where it will play McKinnon at the State Basketball Centre.

Gibson stepping away after two epic runs

The season came to a close for the Pakenham Warriors Men on Saturday night as the class of Hume City was too much to overcome in the Big V Championship semi-final at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium.

The Warriors fought hard until the final buzzer but ultimately 15 turnovers and sub-33 percent shooting from the field as a team wasn’t going to get the job done against the minor premiers on their home floor.

Pakenham started positively in the hostile environment, scoring 14 points on the interior, but the Broncos nailed five triples in the first term to narrowly lead 25-23 after one.

The Warriors’ offence stalled in the second period as they turned the ball over six times and shot poorly from the floor, allowing Hume City to go plus-nine in the quarter and take a 44-33 advantage into halftime.

Pakenham threw everything it could at the Broncos on the other side of the break, but the scoring punch of Ricardo Time and Robbie Heath was taking over the game.

Time scored nine points in the quarter and Heath added five, helping the hosts push the margin out to 15 at the threequarter time huddle, 66-51.

Timely buckets in the fourth never allowed Pakenham to get closer than 13 points and the Broncos got out to their largest lead of 22 before settling for the 86-68 victory.

Ryan Batte scored a game-high 22 points to go along with five boards, while Atien Acuel produced a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

Nae Hightower (11 points) and Harry Love (11 points) were the only other Warriors in double-digit scoring.

Time flirted with a triple-double for the victorious hosts, finishing with 18 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Hume City will now go head-to-head with McKinnon in the grand final at the State Basketball Centre on Saturday.

It’s a rematch of last year’s decider, and the Broncos will be looking to get revenge after a six-point loss to the Cougars on grand final day in 2025.

By Justin Schwarze After two very successful seasons, Pakenham Women’s head coach Elli Gibson has decided to step down following the end of the season.

Gibson led the Warriors to top-three finishes and deep runs in finals in her two years at the helm after taking the reins in early 2025.

She was also named Big V Championship Coach of the Year for her efforts in 2025, mixing a group of experience and youth to become a real premiership contender.

In both years under her leadership, Pakenham has reached the semi-finals and fallen just short of a grand final appearance.

In a statement on social media, the club thanked Gibson for her commitment during her time in the role.

“Elli has been a fantastic asset to the Warriors family, leading our Championship Women for the past 2 seasons,” the statement read.

“Elli is a fantastic leader for our athletes, which is evident in the results and performances she gets out of her team.

“The 2025 season saw the team finish in second place on the ladder with 18 wins, making a strong push in finals.

“2026 was much the same, with a third-placed ladder finish and again extending the season deep into the finals series.

Pumas thank Porter Lakiotis flying

By Blair Burns Pakenham Pumas C2 picked the perfect time to produce one of their strongest performances of the season, defeating Boneo 10-0 in Saturday’s semi-final and booking their place in next week’s preliminary final. Wayne Porter was simply outstanding on the mound, throwing all seven innings and keeping Boneo scoreless from start to finish. Porter struck out an impressive 10 batters while allowing just three hits and two walks, giving the Pumas plenty of confidence behind him.

The Pumas wasted no time giving their pitcher some run support. Scott Dale opened the scoring with a single that brought home two runners in the bottom of the first, before Justin Mazurek added another to give Pakenham an early 3-0 advantage. Pakenham continued to pile on the pressure in the third. Porter helped his own cause with a single down the left-field line, while some aggressive baserunning and pressure on the Boneo defence helped the Pumas stretch their lead even further. It was a strong day throughout the Pakenham lineup, with the Pumas collecting nine hits. Dale led the way with three RBIs and finished 2-for-3, while Greg McCormick, Porter and Travis Hough also collected two hits each. The Pumas weren’t interested in standing still once they reached base either, stealing nine bases for the game. Porter and Dale both swiped multiple bags as Pakenham continually kept the pressure on. And fittingly, it was Travis Hough who put the finishing touch on the semi-final victory. With the Pumas sitting one run away from ending the contest, Hough stepped up and delivered a single to bring home the 10th run, walking it off under the mercy rule and sparking the celebrations.

With strong hitting, aggressive baserunning, solid defence and an absolute gem from Porter on the mound, the Pumas produced an impressive 10-0 semi-final victory when it mattered most. The win keeps Pakenham’s season alive and sends the C2 Pumas through to next week’s preliminary final, where they’ll be fighting for a place in the grand final.

WOMEN BLACK Pakenham Pumas Women’s Black have kept their season alive in impressive fashion, producing a dominant 12-2 semi-final victory over Berwick on Sunday at KH Wearne Reserve.

With their finals campaign on the line, the Pumas wasted no time getting to work, putting three runs on the board in the opening inning.

Katherine Walton and Ally Justice both helped bring runs home as Pakenham grabbed the early advantage. But it was the second inning where the Pumas really took control. Seven runs crossed the plate in a huge offensive burst, with Danni Wilson, Olivia Garcia, Felicity Clissold, Katherine Walton, Gedea Kareroa and Amelia all contributing as the Pumas stretched the game wide open.

Clissold was particularly dangerous with the bat, finishing with two hits and four RBIs in a standout performance. Garcia and Walton also collected two hits each as part of Pakenham’s nine-hit day. Pakenham ran wild with an incredible 18 stolen bases. Holly Lunn, Walton, Tracey Stockdale, Wilson, Kareroa and Clissold all stole multiple bases as the Pumas continually put pressure on the Berwick defence.

The convincing 12-2 win means the Women’s Black season rolls on, with the Pumas now advancing to the preliminary final against Dingley this week at Pakenham. With a place in the grand final now just one win away, the Pumas will have the advantage of playing on their home diamond and will be hoping for plenty of black and white support on the sidelines. One more win, and they’re into the big one.

A1 The Pakenham Pumas A1 side saw their winter season come to an end on Sunday, falling 6-0 to Mornington in a hard-fought semi-final. With everything on the line and a place in the next round of finals up for grabs, the Pumas knew they would need to be at their best. Unfortunately, it wasn’t their day, with Mornington gradually building their lead while keeping Pakenham off the scoreboard. Aoi Nakaza put in a strong performance on the mound for the Pumas, throwing the complete seven innings. He struck out five and walked

three, battling hard throughout the game to give his side every opportunity to stay in the contest.

Aoi also led the way with the bat from the number nine spot, collecting both of Pakenham’s hits in an impressive two-for-three performance.

Despite the scoreboard, the Pumas continued to fight until the final out and showed plenty defensively, turning two double plays along the way.

The loss brings an end to what has been a great season for the A1 side. Reaching the semi-final gave the Pumas one final opportunity to keep their finals campaign alive, but unfortunately this time it wasn’t to be. The club would also like to give a huge thank you to coach Hiroke Goke for everything he has put into the team throughout the season. Hiroke has given his time, knowledge and experience to the group all year, and his contribution to the Pumas has been greatly appreciated. With Hiroke preparing to travel back home soon, everyone at the Pumas wishes him all the very best and thanks him for everything he has done for the club and the players during his time with us. It may not have been the ending the A1s were hoping for, but they can hold their heads high after a season of hard work, plenty of competitive baseball and a well-earned finals appearance.

Endurance is becoming a telling factor in the Greater Melbourne Pigeon Federation season with birds flying more than 500-kilometres in the race from Mildura on Saturday.

Flyers from Pakenham, Dandenong, Rosebud, Peninsula, Springvale, Croydon and Morning Mist clubs all took on the challenge, with Nick Lakiotis from Dandenong coming out trumps on the day.

The winning pigeon flew the 512km distance in six hours and 17 minutes at a velocity of 1356.8 metres per minute.

Second place went to Keith Flentjar, narrowly behind with a velocity of 1356.7mpm, while Raf Styczen made it a clean sweep for Dandenong flyers by taking third place with a velocity of 1346.8mpm.

The race from Mildura follows the previous week’s race from Mittyack, where Morning Mist flyers Steve and Heather Collins took out their second win for the season.

The Collins’ winning pigeon travelled the 408km distance in four hours and 58 minutes at a velocity of 1369mpm, clear of Bean and Blackett from the Peninsula Club who flew the journey at 1366mpm.

Third place from Mittyack went to overall points leader Alf Vella.

Vella leads with 171 points, with the Haidar Brothers running second with 150 points and Steve and Heather Collins also having a great season with 138 points on the board.

Racing returns to Mildura this Saturday before the season moves to Windamingle for three-consecutive races.

Six strikes from stirred-up Storm secures a finals berth

By Blair Burns Cardinia Storm has locked in finals in the Men’s Metro 1 South competition with an emphatic 6-1 win against Melbourne Razorbacks.

The Storm came out of the blocks hungry and determined, knowing their finals chances were on the line.

From the opening whistle, the team showed plenty of energy, intensity and composure, controlling large periods of the game.

Big Ben Thomas opened the scoring after a fantastic team play, with a great link-up between Pete Turner and Troy White creating the opportunity for Thomas to finish.

Storm quickly added a second, this time through Ben Albrecht, who found the back of the net to extend the lead.

The Razorbacks got themselves on the board, but that would be their first and last score.

Cardinia responded with another quality team goal as Taylor Rae delivered an outstanding pass, which was expertly deflected by White to put the Storm back in control.

The goals kept coming, with Ben Thomas and Ben Albrecht both finding the net again to put Storm firmly in the driver’s seat.

In the middle of the park, Kieran McClellan, Ayushi Wahi and Maddie Reincastle produced some excellent runs and controlled the centre of the field.

A special mention must also go to Storm’s three youngest players. Sammy Albrecht, Will Gregory and new recruit Mitchell Whiting, who all put in an outstanding shift, running hard from start to finish and showing plenty of courage and determination.

It was a complete team performance when it mattered most and Cardinia shifts its focus to a rematch of last year’s final against Monash.

Cardinia Storm went down narrowly to Monash University 1–0 in a tightly contested match during Monash’s Men’s Health Round.

Cardinia’s women fell short in a tight battle against Monash 1-0.

The Storm had their chances to score, but the Monash defensive unit held up well and repelled any attacking forays.

Cardinia’s midfield was a highlight, with Lilly Kelly awarded the Best On Ground medal for her strong performance.

Her work rate, driving runs and ability to create entries into the attacking D provided Storm with some of their best opportunities throughout the match.

Despite the result, Cardinia Storm have also secured their place in the finals, progressing on goal difference over Glen Eira.
