Aid covered By Shamsiya Hussainpoor Yarra Ranges members of the Australian Crafters’ Aid Network (ACAN) are using their knitting skills to make hot water bottle covers for people in Ukraine facing ongoing power and heating shortages. The project was launched after Good Neighbours Australia advised that hot water bottles could provide six to eight hours of warmth for people living in communal or damaged buildings. Dandenong Ranges ACAN moderator Jennifer O’Brien said the covers were simple to make and could be knitted from wool, acrylic or blended yarn, making the project accessible to crafters of all experience levels. ACAN hopes to collect hundreds of covers before its 2026 Ukrainian campaign ends in October. Donations will be sent to Ukraine in November, while the project will continue into next year. Since 2019, ACAN has donated more than 14,000 handmade items worldwide. Turn to page 15 to read the full story

Ace Tree Management, an entity associated with the operation, declined to detail specific plans while the assessment is underway, stating they are participating in the formal process and will respect the outcome. The application is currently on public notice. Council has confirmed that no date has been set for a decision. More on page 5

Council officers initially inspected the site following an infringement notice regarding unauthorised earthworks and land use as a “store.” Yarra Ranges Council Director of Planning and Sustainable Futures, Kath McClusky, confirmed the initial inspection determined the activity breached the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme. Located within a Green Wedge Zone (GWZ1), the property is subject to multiple environmental overlays, including bushfire management, erosion control, and significant landscape protections. A Silvan property owner is seeking retroactive council approval to operate a commercial firewood business on Monbulk Road following compliance action by the Yarra Ranges Council. The planning application for 156-158 Monbulk Road requests a use-of-land change for part of the 9.23-hectare site to function as a solid fuel depot. The proposal aims to formalise existing operations, which include storing, processing, and selling firewood and mulch, alongside the installation of shipping containers and a storage canopy.
