The event will honour Ben’s life, kindness and the impact he made during his 17 years and 19 days. Ben’s parents, Jace and Tracey Austin, want their son to be remembered for who he was, rather than only the circumstances of his death after he was struck by a cricket ball while batting in the practice nets at Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully.

The Ben Austin Legacy was created to support grieving families, with a focus on siblings who lose a brother or sister.

The gala will bring the community together to celebrate Ben’s memory and raise funds for Feel the Magic.

By Tanya Steele SkyHigh Observatory in Mt Dandenong has abruptly closed after entering court-ordered liquidation, leaving community groups, schools, employees and customers facing significant disruption.

The popular tourist attraction and function venue stopped trading on 26 July after Adrian Roca of SMB Advisory was appointed liquidator of SkyHigh Mt Dandenong Pty Ltd by the Federal Court of Australia on 21 July.

The liquidation followed an application by the Deputy Commissioner of Taxation, with the Aus-

the disruption caused to customers, employees and the wider community but said it would be inappropriate to comment on the company’s financial position or the circumstances leading to the liquidation while investigations continue.

SkyHigh sits on Crown land under a lease managed by Parks Victoria, which confirmed it is working with the liquidator on the site’s future. Parks Victoria said it would consider long-term options to ensure SkyHigh remains a key visitor attraction in the Dandenong Ranges.

Earlier this year, SkyHigh had announced it had secured a new 21-year lease and planned renovations, although its social media posts about the

lease and the initial closure have since been removed. Originally opened in 1971, SkyHigh is one of the Dandenong Ranges’ best-known attractions, offering panoramic views of Melbourne from 633 metres above sea level.

The heritage site underwent major renovations in 2004, transforming it into the modern venue known today. The liquidation process remains ongoing, with the liquidator investigating the company’s affairs while working with stakeholders on the future of the business. As of Monday 3 August, no update has been provided on when the venue may reopen.

Getting schools fire-ready

By Shamsiya Hussainpoor More than $600,000 will be distributed across 22 schools in the Dandenongs and Hills region to help clear vegetation around school buildings before the fire season as part of the Bushfire Preparedness Vegetation Program grants.

The Victorian Government has announced more than $8 million in funding to help 330 schools across 344 campuses on the bushfire at risk register prepare for the bushfire season.

More than 50 schools across the Yarra Ranges and surrounding areas are among those to receive funding.

Schools in the Dandenongs and Hills region will receive grants ranging from around $22,000 to $36,000, including Belgrave South Primary

School, Cockatoo Primary School, Emerald Primary School, Emerald Secondary College, Ferny Creek Primary School, Gembrook Primary School, Kallista Primary School, Macclesfield Primary School, Menzies Creek Primary School, Monbulk College, Monbulk Primary School, Sassafras Primary School, Selby Primary School, Sherbrooke Community School, Silvan Primary School, Tecoma Primary School, The Basin Primary School, The Patch Primary School, Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School, Upwey High School, Upwey Primary School and Upwey South Primary School.

The program also includes ongoing support, with participating schools receiving two visits every three years from accredited bushfire plan-

ning experts, who will develop tailored vegetation management plans and provide specialist advice where needed.

The new state-appointed Premier and education minister, Ben Carroll, said the funding would help protect school communities well before bushfire season begins.

“It’s never too early to prepare for bushfire season, so my government is stepping in to protect school communities well before bushfire season begins,” he said.

“We’re not just protecting school communities this bushfire season; we’re giving them ongoing support for years to come.”

Kallista Primary School is set to receive $25,021.25 to assist with preparations for the

warmer months.

Principal Robyn Mowat said the school was pleased to receive the funding.

“It’s great to receive specific funding that will help us clear excess vegetation to support bushfire safety, while also maintaining the environmental aspects that are so important to the character of our school,” Ms Mowat said.

Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School (UFTGPS) will receive $25,909.47.

“Being a small school, this funding is very helpful with maintaining the vegetation around our school, particularly around our oval where we have lots of trees and greenery,” UFTGPS principal Tabitha O’Brien said.

The funding builds on vegetation clearance support provided since 2018 and is aimed at improving bushfire preparedness and protecting school communities before the high-risk season.

“This funding gives peri-urban and regional families peace of mind that their local school is prepared for bushfire season well before it begins,” emergency services minister Vicki Ward said.

Kallista Primary School is one of 22 schools in the Dandenongs to receive funding through the Bushfire Preparedness Vegetation Program.

Discontinued

By Shamsiya Hussainpoor During a Yarra Ranges Council meeting on Tuesday, 28 July, councillors unanimously voted on a proposal to discontinue a small, unused three-square-metre section of road reserve next to Upalong Road in Mount Dandenong.

Cr Jeff Marriott said the matter was straightforward.

“I went up and had a close inspection of it; it’s a very small plot of land and is not part of the constructed roadway. It is not on the council’s register of public roads and has been assessed as not being required for public use now or at any point in the future,” he said.

Cr Marriott said discontinuing the road reserve would allow the adjoining property owner at 14 Upalong Road to purchase the land and resolve an existing building encroachment through the appropriate permit process.

“Council has fully complied with the required statutory process, including issuing public notice, and no submissions or objections were received,” he said.

The adjoining owner agreed to pay the council’s costs and purchase the land at an independently assessed market value.

With no further discussion or opposition, the matter was put to a vote and carried unanimously.

Witness appeal Ferntree Gully

Police are asking for community witnesses after motorcycle and car collision on Saturday 1 August.

At around 3.40pm, a 20-year-old male motorcycle rider struck a car on Burwood Hwy, Ferntree Gully near Carlisle St. The male was conveyed to hospital with suspected serious injuries.

The car driver was not injured and stopped at the scene and the driver is assisting police with their enquiries.

Police wish to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or the rider travelling on Burwood Hwy prior to the collision.

Anyone with dashcam or CCTV is urged to contact Knox police.

“We are sad to announce the postponement of our celebration,” the Kalorama Brigade’s social media said on Tuesday 28 July.

People affected by the Skyhigh closure were encouraged by SMB Advisory to get in contact with them if they had bookings up to Sunday 2 August.

“Customers with functions, events or restaurant bookings during that period are encouraged to contact the liquidator’s office and make alternative arrangements,” Mr Roca said.

Sitting on Crown land and managed by Parks Victoria, SkyHigh has leased the popular lookout location since 2004 and announced a new lease renewal with Parks Victoria in April this year, with plans mentioned for renovations and improvements to the buildings and grounds.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission or ASIC, which is the national corporate and financial services regulator, published a notice of application for the winding up of SkyHigh by the Deputy Commissioner of Taxation on 25 May

2026 and a notice for the winding up and the liquidator appointment for SkyHigh Mt Dandenong Pty Ltd on 21 July.

Liquidation in Australia can be a voluntary or court-driven process and allows an independent registered liquidator, SMB Advisory in this case, to take control and wind it up in a fair way.

Unable to comment due to obligations under taxpayer confidentiality laws, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) provided information on the liquidation process and the winding up of companies.

It said the ATO generally applies to wind up a company only after a company has failed to meet its tax obligations and has not responded to engagement efforts, compliance activities, or available payment options.

This may indicate that the company was trading insolvent and that there is a significant risk that the debt owed to the ATO, and potentially other creditors, will not be paid.

Directors of a company no longer have control of assets or finances once a liquidator is appointed.

As the liquidation has only just commenced, Mr Roca said that it would be inappropriate to comment on SkyHigh’s financial position, including the extent of creditor claims or the circumstances leading to the liquidation.

“Those matters are being investigated as part of the statutory liquidation process,” he said.

“The liquidator’s appointment does not necessarily mean that the business will permanently cease trading.”

Mr Roca said that bookings from Monday 3 August remain subject to the result of ongoing discussions.

“Further updates will be provided to customers, creditors and other stakeholders as soon as greater certainty is available,” he said.

A sudden shutdown at the SkyHigh Observatory in Mt Dandenong due to liquidation threw upcoming school formals and award ceremonies into disarray last week.

As a liquidation company works with Parks Victoria and others to reopen the venue, SkyHigh was said to remain closed until 2 August, but there was no update on its reopening at the time of publication.

Closed to the public on 26 July, SkyHigh’s abrupt shutdown caused planning headaches across the outer east community as events set to be held at the popular function and lookout venue had to be postponed or moved.

Mr Adrian Roca of SMB Advisory was appointed Liquidator of SkyHigh Mt Dandenong Pty Ltd by order of the Federal Court of Australia on 21 July, with trading suspended at the venue.

“The liquidator’s office has been working urgently with Parks Victoria and other key stakeholders to finalise approvals and operating arrangements necessary to facilitate the reopening of the venue while an orderly sale process for the business and its assets is undertaken,” he said.

Some SkyHigh employees, who spoke with Star Mail on the condition of anonymity, were also stood down during the week, with several staff informed they were not required to come into work and have been left confused and concerned about the future of their jobs.

While no clear picture of what has led to the liquidation has emerged yet, Mr Roca has informed Star News that while the discussions are progressing as a matter of priority, no outcome can be guaranteed until the necessary approvals have been obtained.

“The proposed arrangement is intended to preserve the business as a going concern, maintain its goodwill and maximise outcomes for creditors, employees, customers and other stakeholders,” he said.

A Parks Victoria spokesperson said the liquidator has informed them of the court ordered decision to liquidate SkyHigh.

“We are liaising with them on the next steps for the site,” they said.

“As the liquidation takes place, we will look at options for a sustainable future that ensures SkyHigh remains a key visitor attraction for the Dandenongs.”

Mr Roca acknowledged the uncertainty the temporary closure has created for customers, employees and the wider community.

“We appreciate that this has been a difficult and uncertain time, particularly for customers with upcoming functions and events and for employees alike,” he said.

“Our immediate focus is on preserving the business and working towards reopening the venue as soon as possible.”

Due to the sudden closure, local community groups and schools had to postpone or move their bookings, including the Kalorama CFA and Boronia K-12 College.

Acoustic cameras for Knox

By Shamsiya Hussainpoor Knox has been selected as one of four Victorian municipalities to take part in a new trial of roadside acoustic cameras to crack down noisy vehicles and hoon drivers.

The State Government is supporting the EPA Victoria’s two-year trial, which will see acoustic camera technology deployed across Knox, Casey, Port Phillip and Stonnington.

Knox was chosen after being identified as a noisy vehicle hotspot based on analysis of Victoria Police noisy vehicle reports submitted to the EPA. In the past five-years, Victoria Police reported more than 3000 noisy vehicle incidents in Knox.

One acoustic camera will be installed in Knox, with the exact location to be determined by EPA in consultation with the council.

The site is expected to be on a major arterial road, based on Victoria Police reporting data and logistical access.

An EPA spokesperson said the roadside acoustic cameras would detect noisy vehicles and capture their registration details, to allow the authority to issue notices - requiring owners to present

their vehicles for noise testing at an accredited testing facility.

Owners who fail to submit their vehicle for testing or bring it into compliance could face fines of $1221 for individuals and $6105 for companies.

“The trial would help tackle excessive vehicle noise,” the EPA spokesperson said.

“EPA Victoria is trialling innovative roadside acoustic camera technology that will help get noisy vehicles off the road and protect the community from excessive noise.”

Knox City Council said the trial comes in response to increasing reports of vehicle noise and will give EPA another tool to target unlawfully modified vehicles and repeat offenders.

Noise has become a growing category of pollution across Victoria.

EPA Victoria received 5404 noise reports in 2020-21, rising to more than 9100 last year.

In 2025, the authority issued almost 5000 noisy vehicle testing notices and 1222 noisy vehicle infringement notices.

EPA chief executive officer Joss Crawford said the trial would test new technology aimed at reducing excessive vehicle noise.

Helping all get counted on Census night

By Callum Ludwig As the countdown to the census draws nearer, hard work is underway to ensure all Australians have the opportunity to be counted.

Local homelessness support services like Anchor and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) are taking steps to ensure people experiencing homelessness are heard from.

Anchor chief executive Heidi Tucker says that the Census is crucial for understanding how widespread homelessness is in Australia.

“We can’t let people be invisible in our communities, it’s vital that Australia’s most vulnerable residents are captured in the count,” she said.

“The data captured in the Census will inform both services and the government for the next five years. For the sector, it is precious evidence of just how bad the homelessness crisis is, and can be the difference between an organisation receiving funding to support a particular region, or having to go without.”

In the Yarra Ranges area, the challenges of outreach are made all the more difficult by the 2468 square kilometres to cover across the region, including plenty of bushland where rough sleepers sometimes camp.

“Not everyone who is experiencing homelessness is known to a service. We’re worried that there will be people who are missed,” Ms Tucker said.

“We know that young people in particular can be couch surfing or living in scenarios associated with homelessness.”

Data from the 2021 Census estimated that 122,494 people were experiencing homelessness on Census night, 23 per cent of which were aged from 12 to 24 years.

The number of people experiencing homelessness has increased by 36 per cent (32,766 people) since 2006, rising from 45 per 100,000 people to 50 per 100,000.

An ABS spokesperson said the Census is the only national estimate of the prevalence of homelessness.

“Census data helps governments and service providers make informed decisions about funding allocation and deliver services where they are needed most,” they said.

“In the week of the Census (10-16 August), Census staff will be in locations across Australia where people are known to sleep rough.

The ABS spokesperson said they are working closely with the homelessness sector to help people participate in the Census.

“This includes people sleeping rough, staying in crisis accommodation, transitional housing, boarding houses, shelters and supported accommodation,” they said.

“They will assist people experiencing homelessness to participate, including interviewing people sleeping rough using a shortened version of the Census form.”

“Where possible, the ABS recruits staff for this work who have experience in the homelessness sector, or with lived experience of homelessness.”

Information materials to support people experiencing homelessness will be circulated directly to the homelessness sector for sharing and are available on the Census website at census.abs.gov.au/homelessness.

Census data has helped spring initiatives like Street Side Medics, founded by Dr Daniel Nour, which has opened up fourteen pop-up clinics around the country to provide healthcare to people experiencing homelessness.

“We rely on Census data to give us a gauge of where to go,” Dr Nour said.

“The sorts of people that are living there, the different communities that live there, the cultures behind them.”

Lib domestic violence pledge

By Callum Ludwig The Victorian Liberals have promised to implement a domestic violence disclosure scheme, similar to Clare’s Law adopted in the United Kingdom (UK) and South Australia, if successful at this year’s state election.

The party also adopted the policy position ahead of the 2022 election, while shadow minister for the prevention of family violence and Eildon MP Cindy McLeish previously attempted to introduce it to parliament through a private member’s bill in 2024.

Ms McLeish said it just reaffirms their position on Clare’s Law as something further that can be done to make a difference in the prevention of family and domestic violence.

“People can hide identities easily, much more easily online, and this is a way of bringing that out into the open.

“It may be someone that you may be involved with, or it could be my sister going and asking because I’ve got a dodgy partner and things don’t quite seem quite right… it could be a family member, it could be a best friend, but it doesn’t need to just be in heterosexual relationships either.

“You’d lodge your application online, and then they (police) do the background work and come back to you.”

The scheme as it operates in South Australia and the UK entitles you to the ‘right to ask’ and the ‘right to know’ about their own partner or that of a close friend, neighbour or family member.

The right to ask entitles people to make an application about a current or ex-partner to the police if they are worried that the person may have been abusive in the past. In South Australia, this information can include convictions for relevant offences (including interstate), relevant reports made to police and charges laid, current and historical intervention orders, breaches of intervention orders and other information relevant to the safety of the person at risk that police may hold.

The right to know also allows the police to proactively share information with someone whose current or ex-partner has a record of violent or abusive behaviour and they believe that they may be at risk.

Ms McLeish said police won’t just do this out of the blue and have got procedures and processes in place to make sure that it’s done delicately.

“The police are trained up, and the police are very good already at delivering bad news… they don’t do it with you on your own, they’d often have a support person, one of your family members or friends there with you,” she said.

In 38,000 of those, they made a disclosure, they had to provide information where people are a little bit suspicious or the history doesn’t add up.

“The number of applicants has been really quite surprising and frightening almost… in South Australia, since its inception there’s been just over two and a half thousand applications with over 1000 disclosures.”

Clare’s Law is named in the memory of Clare Wood, whose parents campaigned for the change after she was killed by her ex-boyfriend in the UK in 2009 A Victorian Government spokesperson said women deserve to be safe and free from abuse and violence – and when women are still dying at the hands of men, we must do more.

“Labor will introduce legislation to criminalise coercive control, ban good character evidence as a mitigating factor in sentencing, and deliver further reforms to better protect victim-survivors and hold perpetrators to account,” they said.

The Victorian Government has not pledged to implement a domestic violence disclosure scheme, but other family and domestic violence measures recently implemented include: Banning accused persons who are self-represented from cross-examining protected witnesses like victims and family members, in sexual offence, family violence and stalking proceedings.

Banning committal hearings for all sexual offence complainants.

Allowing sexual complainants to give evidence via remote video link, or having a support person present when giving evidence.

Restricting when victims’ counselling notes and health information can be accessed for evidence.

Push is on to donate life

By Callum Ludwig For Australia’s annual DonateLife Week, Outer East residents are being urged to take up the simple steps required to register as an organ donor.

New data released by DonateLife reveals how many residents have registered as organ and tissue donors in Victorian local government areas (LGAs).

State medical director of DonateLife Victoria Dr Rohit D’Costa said a recent community survey shows 90 per cent of Victorians support organ donation, but less than one quarter have registered to be a donor.

“It doesn’t matter how old or healthy you are – you can still register as an organ and tissue donor, registering is quick, easy and only takes one minute,” he said.

“A recent community survey shows that 31 per cent of Victorians think they are registered, but in reality only 23 per cent are registered… it’s important to check you are registered at donatelife. gov.au or through Medicare.

“This DonateLife Week, I’m urging all Victorians to please register as an organ and tissue donor. Then, tell your family you want to be a donor - someone’s life depends on it.”

In the Outer East: The Yarra Ranges had 828 new registrations in 2025, a decrease of 20 per cent, down from 1038 the year prior. In total, 41,433 Yarra Ranges residents are registered to donate, or 32 per cent of the region’s population.

715 Knox residents registered in 2025, a decrease of 18 per cent from 869 the year prior.

32,521 Knox residents are registered to donate, which is 24 per cent of the region’s population.

589 people in Maroondah registered in 2025, 22 per cent less the 757 who did so in 2024. 17,735 Maroondah residents, 29 per cent of its local populace, are registered to donate.

In Cardinia, there were 536 new registrations in 2025, down 23 per cent from 694 the previous year. 25 per cent of the population is registered, accounting for 22,185 people.

After she moved to Australia from South Africa in 2004, Ms Liebman was diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), an autoimmune condition that affects the liver bowel ducts, getting by with medication which kept her condition stable and allowed her to start a family.

Ms Liebman said she got Covid in 2022 and her medication stopped working.

“My condition worsened, and the only option was to have a transplant, but before I could even go through that whole process, I ended up having an emergency,” she said.

“I had burst varices where my poor children, who were thirteen and probably eleven at the time, found me collapsed on the floor, and I was

rushed to hospital, where I nearly died.

“I got put on the transplant list in early 2024 and the wait was probably about two and a half months, but quite excruciating.”

Just months after her donation, Ms Liebman and her partner Damien honoured her donor by completing the 80km ride along the Lilydale-Warburton Rail Trail and back, something that would have been impossible due to her ailing health before the transplant.

Ms Liebman said it was a second chance at life, and without that transplant, she wouldn’t be here today.

“Obviously recovery is hard but I get the gift of being able to see my girls now grow up, when you have liver disease, it’s quite debilitating because you don’t have energy, you feel sick all the time,

your body hurts, and you’re not really having a good quality of life,” she said.

“I’m so appreciative of my donor, the choice they made, and to their family because without that choice, many of us on the waiting list would not get the opportunity of a second chance of life.”

2000 Australians are currently awaiting an organ transplant, while there are a further 14,000 on dialysis who could benefit from a kidney transplant.

Ms Liebman said if it is something local residents are interested in, it’s a very simple process to sign up.

“I don’t think it’s something many people think about, you go through life not thinking about organ donation because it hasn’t happened to you or anyone close to you but being aware of it now, it’s even more important to spread the word,” she said.

“My daughters now want to become organ donors, and a few of my friends have signed up so this has impacted not just my life, but the life of a lot of people around me.

“It’s also important to let their families and friends know about their thoughts because at the end of the day, your family make that final decision, so the important part is to educate yourself on organ donation as well as let your family and friends know.”

RSV spiking across winter

By Tanya Steele Winter is in full swing across Australia, and according to the Immunisation Foundation of Australia (IFA), RSV cases have surpassed both influenza and Covid-19 this winter.

Over 83,000 cases have been recorded, and the organisation is urging older adults to get vaccinated.

Locally in the outer east, healthcare staff have seen young babies and children presenting to their emergency departments, some quite unwell with RSV. Brittany Gatt, a paediatric ED nurse and first aid educator, said that as winter has progressed, RSV has been making younger kids, especially those under the age of two, really unwell across the outer east.

“It can have such dramatic effects on the younger population, there have been some really unwell babies,” she said.

“It can also lead to a lot of secondary illnesses like pneumonia or bronchiolitis.”

RSV or respiratory syncytial virus is a common virus that causes respiratory infection in a person’s airways or lungs, and impacts people of all ages, but infants, young children and older adults in particular are at risk.

IFA founder and executive director Catherine Hughes AM said there is also still a massive gap in RSV vaccination coverage and an urgent need for older adults to get vaccinated.

“The RSV vaccine was unfortunately not available in April and early May when many older Australians receive their flu shot, so it’s clear there is some catching up to do,” she said.

IFA has collected data showing that despite a high number of RSV cases this year, infant admissions to paediatric hospitals during the early months (April-May) of the Australian RSV season are actually 70 per cent lower than in 2024, before the roll-out of the national RSV Mother and Infant Protection Program.

“Since the nationwide program began last year, more than 360,000 Australian babies have been protected against severe RSV,” Ms Hughes said.

(Supplied). hospital and requiring oxygen support or intensive care due to RSV.” The RSV vaccine is free to those at risk of catching the virus and includes infants, expectant mothers, adults aged 75 years and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over.

Babies who catch RSV display symptoms like increased work of breathing and wheeziness, and Ms Gatt said parents can feel quite anxious when it comes to outbreaks of the virus in places like childcare settings.

“Some parents are getting quite anxious and bringing their children into ED to get them checked out when they may not necessarily be that unwell,” she said.

If parents are worried their child has RSV, Ms Gatt said a good option when worried about getting your child seen by a health professional, especially out of hours, is services like the virtual ED.

“If your baby has RSV and they’re starting to show wheezing, work of breathing and poor feeding, they’re all red flags and they need to be assessed by a health professional, whether it’s your GP or using resources like virtual ED if you’re unsure,” Ms Gatt said.

The free 24-hour service is available to all Victorians for non-emergency urgent care video calls and can help alleviate worries or get further care as required with a quick call from home.

Ms Gatt said it’s a good idea to sign up ahead of needing the service as well.

“Getting protected against RSV is an incredibly simple yet effective way to help prevent serious illness and stay out of hospital.”

The community should always seek medical care if symptoms do not resolve or worsen.

For babies and young children, call an ambulance or go to your nearest hospital emergency department if your child is turning blue, having trouble breathing, or is breathing very quickly.

For some tips to avoid spread and general prevention, Ms Gatt said it really comes down to your basics. “Good hand hygiene,” she said.

Taking care to remove shoes from your kids before they come in the door from places like childcare and encouraging people not to kiss your baby’s face and hands can be a big preventative in the home.

“Especially hands, they go straight in the mouth,” said Ms Gatt.

Spread through droplets from coughing and sneezing, teaching kids and even reminding adults that if they sneeze they should cover their mouth and wash their hands afterwards can really help prevent the spread of RSV. Ms Gatt also said that keeping unwell children home from daycare and school is essential.

“All those little things can really help prevent the spread,” she said.

Being outdoors in winter will not increase your chances of catching RSV, and Ms Gatt said being in close quarters inside is more likely to spread the infection.

“The reason why kids get more sick in winter is because they’re actually indoors closer to each other,” she said.

Other tips include cleaning toys, especially after a playdate and encouraging kids not to share their drink bottles and food.

“It really is just those little things that people don’t really think make an impact, but it really does,” Ms Gatt said.

Updated actions after the review are aimed at helping Knox Council to meet net zero emissions by 2030 and to support the community to meet net zero by 2040, as well as adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Council corporate emissions decreased by nearly 20 per cent over the first four years, with 35 percent expected following a newly activated Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

For residents, the latest available data from 2022/23 and showed a 12.6 per cent reduction in community emissions since 2018/19.

Community emissions from electricity have reduced 24 per cent in that period and emissions from gas use decreased by 10 per cent. The industrial and commercial sector is the largest contributor to emissions in Knox, accounting for 39 per cent of total emissions.

“We’re going to see more disasters, more huge fires, more floods, more cyclones, with much more intensity than ever before, around the globe,” he said. “This report shows the fantastic progress in council’s plan.”

Cr Duncan said the engagement of 74 Knox residents on the engagement for the plan showed passion for the climate issue, and the motion was passed unanimously.

Gala set for Ben’s 18th

By Shamsiya Hussainpoor When Ben Austin’s family gathers with the community on Friday, 9 October 2026, it will be to celebrate a milestone he never got the chance to reach - his 18th birthday.

The Ben Austin Legacy Gala will bring together those who knew and loved Ben, honouring his memory, his kindness and the impact he had during his 17 years and 19 days of life.

For Ben’s parents, Jace Austin and Tracey Austin, the evening is about remembering their son for the person he was, not only for the tragic circumstances surrounding his death.

Ben was batting in the practice nets with his teammates at Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully when he was struck in the neck by a cricket ball.

He was rushed to hospital, where he was placed on life support, but sadly died two days later on 30 October, 2025.

Mr Austin said the family wanted Ben to be remembered for how he lived.

“He’s remembered as the kid that died at the cricket match, and we don’t want that to be his,” Mr Austin said.

“He’s a lot more than that, the way he lived is far more important than the way he left us.”

Ben is remembered by his family as a “kind”, “compassionate” and “calm” person who always made time for others.

“He was beautiful, he was kind, he was compassionate, he had time for everyone,” Ms Austin said.

“He was warm, he had a bit of humour and he’d always have a slight joke at people, but he always did everything by the rules.”

Ms Austin described Ben as the “calm” in their home, someone who avoided conflict and preferred spending his time playing sport and enjoying life.

Sport was a huge part of Ben’s world - he loved being active and was always looking for opportunities to improve and take part.

Mr Austin said Ben’s approach to life was something he hoped would remain part of his legacy.

“If you’re going to choose to be one thing, choose to be kind, because that’s what Ben did,” he said.

The Ben Austin Legacy was established to support families experiencing the loss of a child, with a particular focus on supporting siblings who are often navigating grief in the shadows.

Ben’s brothers, Cooper Austin, 16, and Zach Austin, 13, lost their older brother and best friend.

Mr Austin said the experience had highlighted the need for greater awareness and support for siblings grieving the death of a brother or sister.

“They’ve lost their best friend and their big brother,” he said.

Siblings can sometimes become the forgotten part of grief support, with much of the attention naturally focused on parents.

Mr Austin spoke about the close bond between Ben and Cooper, who were around 14 months apart and grew up sharing many memories together.

“They were more like best friends,” he said.

“They were competitive and fought and punched on a hell of a lot, but their bonding

closeness is unmeasurable.”

Mr Austin said one of his biggest concerns was ensuring siblings had support, not only in the immediate aftermath of loss, but throughout the different stages of life they would face without their brother or sister.

He said future milestones, including weddings and having children, would bring moments when Ben’s absence would be felt again.

“When Cooper wants to have his wedding party, Ben would have been partying,” Mr Austin said.

“And then when they have kids, where’s uncle Benny?”

The Ben Austin Legacy supports organisations that assist grieving children and families, including Feel the Magic and The Compassionate Friends Victoria.

Mr and Ms Austin said the aim was not to remove grief, but to help families find connection, understanding and support while learning how to live alongside it.

“We’re not going to take away all that grief, but how can we support it to make this journey easier for them and make it more accepted?” Mr Austin said.

The couple said grief is something many people struggle to talk about, and they want to create a space where families do not feel isolated.

“People don’t know what to say,” Ms Austin said.

“But it’s not about saying the right thing, it’s about being there, being present.”

The inaugural Ben Austin Legacy Gala will mark what would have been Ben’s 18th birthday with an evening of celebration and connection at The Glasshouse, Olympic Park Oval, Melbourne.

The event will be hosted by Livinia Nixon, while Hamish McLachlan will host a sports panel featuring sporting figures including former Australian men’s cricket team captain Ricky Ponting and Collingwood team members, among others.

The event will include a three-course sit-down dinner, welcome canapes, drinks and entertain-

ment and dancing.

All proceeds from the evening will go directly to Feel the Magic, an organisation supporting grieving children and families across Australia.

For Mr Austin, the gala is another way to keep Ben’s memory alive while creating something meaningful from the loss his family will continue to carry.

He said he wanted people to leave the event understanding the person Ben was and the difference he made.

“Remember him for the way he lived and the kindness,” Mr Austin said.

Ben’s parents are hoping the legacy created in his name will help other families facing the loss of a child, while reminding the community that grief is not something people should face alone.

“Ben changed me the day he was born, and he changed me the day he died,” Mr Austin said.

“Both times, he made me better.”

The Royal Hotel fuels CFA

By Tanya Steele Upper Gully CFA celebrated the giving nature of community with The Royal Hotel in Upper Ferntree Gully on Monday 27 July, receiving a vital donation from the local watering hole.

Celebrating community and the local donation, the outer east CFA brigade came out to give thanks with some of its newest members ahead of the upcoming fire season while they continue to recruit for their station.

Assistant manager at the hotel, Jodie-Ann, said it was fantastic to honour the local brigade with the donation and a cause close to her heart and the hotel raised the donation over the last few months on a Thursday community karma night they hold weekly.

“We love giving back into the community,” she said.

After a few months collecting funds, the Upper Gully CFA have received nearly 2,700 dollars from the Royal Hotel in Upper Ferntree Gully and the brigade Captain Peter Smith said they were stoked for the donation.

Captain Smith or ‘Muddy’ as he is known to many, said donations from local businesses like the hotel were vital ahead of ongoing recruitment and training for the fire season ahead.

Almost newly fledged firefighters with the Up-

per Gully CFA, Anthony, Jody, Abby and Michael joined the gathering and have enjoyed their training so far, excited to be part of the team.

Learning new skills and trying new things, the group are all from different backgrounds and ages, from emergency response, industrial work and high school.

Some are what’s known as ‘seasonal firefighters’, which allows for volunteers from further afield to join for certain periods throughout the year.

Captain Smith said they’re a part of the team and the group will be ready for turnout soon, in time for the fire season from October.

As renovations kick off at the station, CFA in Upper Gully are still hoping to recruit more volunteers for the summer and any community interested should pop in on Sunday morning.

“You may see us out and about maintaining skills and equipment, checking hydrants are in working order, and passing on local knowledge to our new recruits,” read a post by Upper Gully CFA on social media on 29 July.

“We’re always happy to stop and chat about what we do.”

Kallista hall celebrates a rejuvenation milestone

By Shamsiya Hussainpoor The Kallista Mechanics Institute Hall celebrated the official opening of its stage one rejuvenation works on Friday, 31 July, with the community gathering over warm soup and homemade desserts.

Attendees including community members, funding partners, local organisations and supporters gathered at the hall on Friday evening mark the completion of the upgrades, which included a refurbished kitchen, new meeting room, backup generator, reverse-cycle heating and cooling, and external painting.

Kallista Mechanics Institute Hall committee of management chairman, Chris Job said the upgrades were needed to protect a building that has served the community for more than 110 years.

“The hall has been ageing, it’s 110 years plus in age, so it needed quite a bit of work,” Mr Job said.

The upgrades addressed a range of issues, including foundation repairs, asbestos removal, kitchen improvements, flooring repairs and other maintenance needs, while also helping transform the hall into a more inclusive community space.

Mr Job said the renovations had sparked renewed interest in the hall, with more community groups and residents using the space.

“We’ve now got heating and cooling, and that was thanks to Bendigo Bank,” he said.

The project has been supported by a range of funding partners, including $50,000 from the Victorian Government’s Tiny Towns Fund, $75,000 through DEECA’s Targeted Maintenance and Upgrade Grant, $5000 from Bendigo Bank for air-conditioning units, and $37,500 from AusNet for generator-related works.

The hall committee contributed $47,000, with $40,000 provided through community inkind contributions, while Dulux supported the project with 50 litres of paint.

Monbulk Member, Daniela Di Martino was there to represent the state’s industrial relation minister Jaclyn Symes, she said the project demonstrated how targeted funding could make a significant difference in smaller communities.

“Tiny Towns was literally smaller projects that make a big difference for a town and a community,” Ms Di Martino said.

She said the hall’s history and future role as a resilient community facility made it a valuable project to support.

AusNet major customer and community engagement lead, Tex Lindner said the hall’s generator and resilience upgrades would provide an important resource during emergencies.

“We can’t guarantee power 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Mr Lindner said.

have power, is really important.”

The hall’s heating and cooling upgrades were supported by Monbulk Community Bank Bendigo Bank.

Monbulk Community Bank Bendigo Bank’s customer relationship officer, Alison Wills Pettitt said practical improvements like heating and cooling helped make community spaces more welcoming.

“It makes everyone relax and be able to enjoy each other and be part of a group together,” she said.

Long-time volunteer, John William Lloyd, who has been involved with the hall for 51 years also attended, he said seeing the rejuvenation completed was rewarding.

“I think it’s a credit to the organising committee and to the local people who really relish living in this wonderful place, Kallista,” Mr Lloyd said.

Yarra Ranges Council Lyster Ward councillor Cr Peter McIlwain said community spaces like the hall played an important role in keeping people connected.

“Our lives are not just lived in isolation; they’re lived in community,” Cr McIlwain said.

Stage two of the project, subject to funding, will focus on further accessibility upgrades, including refurbished toilets, accessible bathrooms, wider access doorways and accessible parking.

Mr Job said the plans were ready to progress once funding was secured.

“We’ve broken it into two stages, so it’s ready to go, but it’s just chasing the funding,” he said.

Probus celebrates 50 years

By Mikayla van Loon A grand celebration fit for a major milestone was held on Thursday 30 July to mark 50 years of Probus in Australia.

The Probus Association of Victoria (PAV) committee hosted an afternoon high tea at the Chirnside Park Country Club, bringing together 154 members to celebrate the occasion.

Probus club members travelled from near and far, with representatives from Blackburn Combined, Chisholm, Croydon Park, Emerald Ladies, Essendon, Heathmonth Ladies, Keysborough, Knoxfield Ladies, Mitcham-Nunawading, Monash, Mooroolbark, Olinda, Rowville-Lysterfield, Seymour, Tunstall Combined and Wheelers Hill.

Compere and delegate Anne Vick said while individual clubs have celebrated the 50-year milestone in their own ways, this was a wonderful way to bring people together.

“It’s 50 years that we’re celebrating with all these lovely people who come from far and wide,” she said.

Probus ambassador, Olinda Probus member, and keynote speaker for the event, Helen Holliday, spoke of the abundance in our lives in modern society compared to generations before, but also how it had led to complacency.

“We are so fortunate to live in a country where abundance is everywhere in our lives. We

have everything, more or less at our fingertips, from love to lemons,” she said.

“We have so much abundance in our lives, and yet, we all seem to be time-poor…Complacency is something that seems to creep into societies that have abundance. We assume that the good things and good times will go on forever.”

Ms Holliday said this complacency could not be extended to the running of Probus clubs, especially when it comes to drawing new members.

She spoke of when her “bright idea” to start a Probus club in Olinda 21 years ago sparked, there was already a 120-member strong club in Monbulk.

But over time, committee members grew tired of their roles and new, younger members weren’t joining, seeing numbers dwindle to just 20 before the decision to shut was made.

“This is what we must all remember that if you want your club to survive, one thing is absolutely certain - you must continue to attract new, younger members,” she said.

Whether it’s joining the committee, organising a new activity like a dog walking group, or learning computer skills to share with the club, Ms Holliday said members should use their own curiosity, creativity and hobbies to drum up ideas for their clubs.

“Let your club be the abundant, thriving club in your area, and never let complacency and in-

dolence take over,” she said.

“Probus clubs tick all the boxes for social abundance.”

Probus ambassador Anne Oughtibridge OAM joined her first ladies club after she retired in 1998.

She served as president of Ringwood East Ladies Club in 2000, president of Melbourne Outer Eastern Region in 2003, foundation president and life member of Maroondah Combined, and foundation president and life member of Ringwood Clocktower.

As an ambassador for Probus clubs in the east and a member of Croydon Park Probus, Ms Oughtibridge said providing interesting activities and opportunities for members was key to a club’s success.

“A lot of people say, ‘What’s Probus?’ They have no idea. I’m in Melbourne East Probus Club, and 32 clubs joined it,” she said.

“We mainly concentrate on the number of speakers we have, because if you get a good speaker, you get people at the meeting, and then the other one is tours.”

Promoting club collaboration to share speakers and organise tours together, Ms Oughtibridge said, was one of her biggest tasks.

In a previous role, Ms Oughtibridge was a tour leader, to which she said, “I’ve been overseas about 13 times, taking groups. It was magic.”

Within her own club in Croydon Park, Ms Oughtibridge said the array of activities was essential to draw in members. The club provides 27 different opportunities.

Everything from cards and bowls to dine-out lunches and theatre, each club offers something different to mould to their members’ interests.

The 50th anniversary celebration was filled with games and raffles, jokes and wonderful conversations.

Maroondah City Council Mayor Linda Hancock presented a certificate of gratitude and recognition to PAV president Cheryl Hunt to mark the formalities.

“As a council, we really value the support you give our community: a place to be social, a place to belong, activities to keep the mind going, the laughter,” Cr Hancock said.

“It’s nice to be appreciated for what we do.

I think we all enjoy these years when we retire.

We don’t know what we’re going to do, but all of a sudden we join Probus and we make new friends, and it does a lot for your mental health,” Ms Hunt said.

The first Probus club in Australia was established in Hunters Hill in February 1976 and, for 50 years, clubs have encouraged older Australians to engage socially within their communities.

Second youth shed for Boronia

By Tanya Steele A special program for youth has expanded into another primary school in Boronia, celebrating hands-on skills, learning and community connection.

The sound of hammers and laughter soon got going on the afternoon of Monday 26 July as kids from the Boronia K-12 College began their first Youth Skills Shed session, joining in with members of the local Boronia Rotary and local tradies in the area.

With a bevy of local guests and politicians dropping in to mark the opening of the new shed, Boronia Rotarian and the Boronia Rotary Club Community Services Director, Ray Siegersma said he was excited and thanked everyone involved for helping it come to being.

“I’m sure that this new skills shed will deliver the best outcome for the students, they will have the opportunity to learn trade skills from the instructors and tradies,” he said.

Children at the school were ready in high vis clothing and their families stood by proudly as the ribbon was cut, with MP Mary Doyle and local council Knox Mayor Paige Kennett in attendance.

Along with one of the school teachers, local tradespeople will now get to work and teach the group of students selected for the first program at Boronia K-12 College, learning everything from bricklaying to electrical circuitry as term three gets into full swing.

The school have used an existing shed onsite for the project and fully equiped a workshop with tools and a kitchenette that it will be used by both primary and secondary students.

Made possible by the Rotary and school working together, along with vital sponsorship from Bendigo Bank and Bunnings, Mr Siegersma also received a local heroes award which contributed to the program to the tune of $20,000 in 2025 for his work in the community.

An expansion across Boronia, the first youth skills shed first came into being on 23 October 2024 at the Boronia Heights Primary School and has already seen a number of local Boronia kids

cycle through the program.

Mr Siegersma said that it’s not possible to run a program such as this without the support they get from club volunteers and the tradies who give their time for every session.

“We have had club members attend the first Youth Skills Shed at Boronia Heights Primary

school week after week,” he said.

Mr Siegersma said in his speech before the ribbon was cut that the kids may enjoy one thing in particular about the shed.

“The best part in my opinion is it’s going to run during school time too, from 2pm till 3.30pm on a Monday, now that’s a real bonus,” he said.

Belgrave South PS celebrates 100 days of prep

By Shamsiya Hussainpoor Belgrave South Primary School Prep students marked a special milestone on Tuesday, July 28, celebrating their 100th day of school with a range of creative activities.

The 100 days of Prep celebration is a popular early primary milestone, often featuring dress-ups, counting projects and classroom activities.

Students at Belgrave South Primary School explored the number 100 through songs, counting by ones, twos, fives and tens, and creating necklaces threaded with 100 Cheerios.

They also shared morning tea together and made decorated 100-day crowns, which they will wear at their next assembly to be celebrated by the whole school.

The students also shared their imaginative thoughts about what the world could look like in 100 years.

“100 year olds read boring books,” one student said, while another said, “We’re so old, look how much we have shrunk.”

Students also imagined that “100 year olds drink tea and fall asleep in chairs,” while others looked ahead to the future, saying, “In 100 years time there will be 100 kangaroos and 100 rabbits and we will all make hats.”

Other ideas included robots talking with people, dinosaurs coming back alive, F1 drivers changing “but hopefully not Oscar”, working in a flying building, and having a pet donkey named Karen.

Across Victoria, more than 51,000 Prep students at public schools are celebrating their first 100 days of school this year, including students at 19 new public schools opened by the Victorian Government.

The new state-appointed Premier and education minister Ben Carroll said the milestone was an important celebration for young learners.

“This year, hundreds of Preps are celebrating their first 100 days of school at one of the 19 brand-new public schools built by Labor,” Mr Carroll said.

Artists challenge status quo

By Shamsiya Hussainpoor Four artists from Burrinja Community Cultural Centre in Upwey have joined forces for a free exhibition examining the political and social issues that continue to remain unresolved in 2026.

The exhibition, created by Natasja van Wyk, Nicole Kemp, Kelly Sullivan and Empire of Stuff, ‘I Can’t Believe We’re Still Protesting This!’, opens on Saturday, 1 August at the Burrinja Lyre Gallery and runs until Sunday, 6 September.

Through textiles, pattern, assemblage, repetition and material tension, the exhibition explores themes including feminism, war, political regression, consumer culture and structural inequality.

For the textile artist, Ms van Wyk, the exhibition’s title captures a sense of “disbelief, frustration and exhaustion”.

“It refers to the unsettling fact that we are still having to protest issues that should have been resolved or substantially addressed long ago, including gender inequality, bodily autonomy, gendered violence, war, discrimination, political accountability and the unequal value placed on people’s lives and labour,” she said.

Ms van Wyk said every part of the title carried meaning. “’I can’t believe’ captures genuine shock. ‘We’ acknowledges that these struggles are collective rather than individual. ‘Still’ points to repetition, because the same structures and arguments keep returning, sometimes under new language or in slightly altered forms,” she said.

Ms van Wyk said the title acknowledged fatigue, but it was not a statement of surrender.

“There is also a tension within the title. It acknowledges fatigue, but it is not a statement of surrender,” she said.

“My work reflects this through materials associated with domesticity, care and hand-making, particularly textiles.”

Ms van Wyk said her work explored the connection between the domestic and political worlds.

“By using them to address violence, consent, resistance and inequality, I am insisting that the domestic and political worlds are connected,” she said.

“There is sometimes an assumption that once a right has been recognised or a social issue has entered public consciousness, the matter has been settled. History repeatedly shows otherwise.”

One of Ms van Wyk’s central works is ‘Seeds of Destruction’, a textile piece reflecting on Palestinian resilience and the watermelon as a symbol of cultural identity and resistance.

“The title considers how destruction is planted and cultivated,” she said.

“Violence rarely begins with the final visible act. It is preceded by language, dehumanisation, repeated injustice, political choices and the gradual normalisation of suffering.”

The exhibition will also feature a handmade protest sign created by the Sherbrooke Women for Peace in 1988, recently gifted to Ms van Wyk after previously being displayed at Burrinja in 2008.

“Its presence creates a direct line between lo-

cal women’s activism in 1988, its public remembrance in 2008 and the issues we are still confronting in 2026,” Ms van Wyk said.

“The fact that the sign remains relevant nearly four decades after it was made is moving, but also deeply concerning.”

“That is almost the exhibition title made material: we truly cannot believe that we are still protesting this.”

Ms van Wyk said she did not want to prescribe one correct emotional response.

“I hope any discomfort is productive rather than punitive,” she said.

“The purpose is not to shame people or create a test of ideological purity. It is to interrupt passive looking and encourage reflection.”

She said the exhibition brought together different artistic voices rather than presenting a single political statement.

“The artists work through textiles, painting, mixed media, collage, sculpture, crockery, domestic objects and participatory elements,” Ms van Wyk said.

“Some works are quiet and intimate, while others are direct, humorous or confrontational.

That range is important because protest does not have one visual language.”

Ms van Wyk said fellow artist Kelly Sullivan’s postcard project invited visitors to become part of the exhibition.

“I want people to mail themselves a postcard into the future,” Ms Sullivan said.

Visitors can write about a personal or global change they would like to see before the postcard is sent back to them in 12 months.

The project encourages participants to reflect on what mattered to them, what changed, what remained unresolved and whether they acted on their intentions.

The Sherbrooke Women for Peace sign and Ms Sullivan’s postcards explore the idea of communicating across time.

“The Sherbrooke Women for Peace sign carries a message from women in 1988 into a contemporary exhibition in 2026,” she said.

“Kelly’s postcards move in the opposite direction, carrying visitors’ hopes and commitments from the present into the future.”

Together, the works ask what people inherit from earlier activists and what they will leave for those who come after them.

Ms van Wyk said she hoped visitors understood that protest was not limited to marches, placards or public confrontation.

“It can also take the form of witnessing, making, writing, refusing silence, questioning inherited assumptions, caring for someone or choosing not to participate in the normalisation of injustice,” she said.

“I hope people leave feeling neither entirely comfortable nor entirely powerless,” Ms van Wyk said.

“The exhibition acknowledges fatigue and frustration, but it also values persistence.”

The exhibition will be on display at Burrinja Community Cultural Centre in Upwey, located at 351 Glenfern Road, with the gallery open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm.

Voices from the Edge join in storytelling and allyship Performers, artists, poetry and more brought together a special celebration of voices that are often marginalised or misunderstood over the weekend.

Sunday afternoon in Tecoma Uniting Church on 2 August saw community come together for the third Voices from the Edge event, with storytellers and artists alike sharing their art and stories.

Organisers said this year exceeded expectations as participants, performers and artists joined the powerful afternoon of storytelling, music, reflection and connection and attendees said this year was deeply affirming and transformative.

“It warmed my heart and empowered me to be true to myself,” said one community member in reflection.

Opening with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country led by Wurundjeri, Dja Dja Wurrung, and Ngurai Illum-Wurrung woman Stacie Piper, musical and spoken performances soon followed.

The With One Voice choir from Bayswater, pianist, composer and songwriter Celeste Willoughby and Ngiyampaa man and First Nations singer-songwriter Pirrutu performed their sets interwoven with storytelling from author Mariam Issa and and theatre-maker Emma Chandler.

One of the organisers Shakti Mclaren said that Mariam spoke about the importance of openness in her journey to integrate as a Somali Muslim asylum seeker.

“She reflected that understanding herself was essential to understanding and connecting deeply with others and observed that fear often fuelled bigotry and the “othering” of people who have been marginalised,” she said.

One of the highlights of the afternoon included a panel discussion concluding the program that offered performers and artists the opportunity to share personal experiences and reflections.

Panellists spoke candidly about the barriers faced by people who are marginalised, including the challenges experienced by First Nations artists seeking access to the music industry.

Speakers also shared insights on what it means to be an effective ally, talking through

the active role of allyship, in which people can work intentionally to create inclusive spaces.

Some examples from the panel included asking thoughtful and sometimes uncomfortable questions, remaining curious about others’ experiences, learning about pronouns,deepening understanding of First Nations ways of knowing and being, considering the access needs of people with disability, and making space for open conversations across cultures and faiths.

Using the power of personal connection and storytelling, the panellists agreed that storytelling is one of the most powerful ways

people can learn together.

“And build connections and better understand the many worlds that exist within our shared planet,” said Shakti.

“Performers said that they valued the opportunity to be part of the event and expressed strong support for more initiatives like Voices from the Edge,” she said.

“The event left attendees with new insights and a deeper understanding of the experiences of people who have been marginalised, reinforcing the importance of events that create space for listening, learning and connection.”

Species-saving efforts feted

By Oliver Winn A network of community-led conservation groups in the Yarra Valley is celebrating Landcare Week in early August, raising awareness around the crucial work done by volunteers to keep the environment healthy.

The Nangana Landcare Network consists of four local conservation groups who have teamed up to improve the environment across the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.

Its vice president, Jenny Lyndon, said one of its member groups, the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FOHH) was worth celebrating for its efforts to save the helmeted honeyeater from extinction.

“We’re not doing anything special because we just keep going… Everything we do is important and significant because we’re working on maintaining a critically threatened species that’s one bush fire away from extinction,” she said.

The story starts in 1983, when only a single helmeted honeyeater population remained in Yellingbo, due to years of habitat destruction by humans and the Ash Wednesday bushfires.

Community conservationists then formed FOHH in 1989 and their persistence to save this special species has paid off, with 200 birds on three sites in the wild.

In 2017, FOHH teamed up with three other landcare groups, Macclesfield Landcare, Johns Hill Landcare and Monbulk Landcare, to join an initiative called Beyond Yellingbo. It shifted focus from protecting a remnant land to rebuilding an entire landscape for the helmeted honeyeater to thrive in.

The Beyond Yellingbo initiative then led to the formation of the Nangana Landcare Network in 2021.

Ms Lyndon said Nangana Landcare Network’s goal was to manage conservation for the entire Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges through a project called C411 Country.

“We’re at the stage of doing a conservation action plan, which will provide us with the framework to manage conservation… over the whole of the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges…. 128,000 hectares.”

The national body for landcare, Landcare Australia, released its 2026 National Landcare Week Survey for Landcare Week, which revealed a growing movement of Australians embracing local environmental action.

Out of the nationally representative sample of 1200 people, 83 per cent of Australians said they regularly helped care for their local environment.

Landcare Australia Chair Peter Garrett AM said the findings showed how Australians who

But Mr Garrett said climate change was posing a growing challenge to the environment, landcare networks and their volunteers.

Ms Lyndon echoed the sentiment and said the impact of the climate crisis was “quite scary”.

“In the wider scheme of things, the biodiversity loss across the globe… is just awful. I mean, you know, it’s all being held together with stringing band aids by little groups like us who are volunteer and unpaid,” Ms Lyndon said.

The survey highlighted exactly this, as 59 per cent of respondents said it is becoming harder to recruit volunteers.

Meanwhile, 66 per cent believed better funding would make the biggest difference to the work they can achieve.

Ms Lyndon said the State Government was not “supporting landcare sufficiently”.

“It’s really important that Landcare networks get at least a slight bit of paid support.

“It’s just really hard to organise things, and if you have a paid facilitator, they can do a lot of the grunt work.”

She encouraged those who want to join the Nangana Landcare Network to get in touch with their local landcare group.

Family violence law changes Victoria’s family violence laws are changing in 2026. The changes are part of the Women’s Safety Package, which was passed by the Victorian Parliament earlier this year.

Some changes started in April, and more are due to begin by November.

The reforms are designed to make family violence laws clearer, improve safety for people experiencing abuse, and help police and courts respond to the full picture of what is happening in a relationship.

The changes make it clearer that family violence includes stalking, systems abuse, and mistreating pets or other animals to frighten or control a person. Systems abuse can include misusing court processes, making false or misleading reports, or trying to influence services such as health providers to keep control over someone.

It is hoped the clarification of the definition will make it easier for police, courts and support

matters Anita Koochew Eastern Community Legal Centre services to identify controlling behaviour earlier and respond with stronger protections.

The reforms specify new conditions that can be included in family violence intervention orders.

These may stop the person using violence from trying to find the protected person, using a pet to control them, or going near a listed pet. In some cases, an order may also require a pet to be

returned to the person who is the main carer.

These changes recognise that pets are often part of a person’s safety planning and emotional support, and that threats involving animals can be an extremely harmful form of control.

A parent who applies for an intervention order can ask for their children under 18 to be protected by the same order.

The reforms clarify that if the order continues after a child turns 18, that young person will stay protected until the order ends.

This gives families more continuity of safety and may reduce the need for young adults to start a new legal process at an already stressful time.

Misidentification happens when a victim-survivor is wrongly treated as the person using family violence.

This phenomenon has long been recognised by government agencies, Victoria Police, family

violence and community legal services.

From November, police and Magistrates will need to consider whether misidentification may have happened when an intervention order is being considered.

A stronger focus on the whole context of the relationship may lead to fairer decisions and better safety for victim-survivors.

This reform represents an important step towards a family violence intervention order system that better reflects the realities of abuse and provides stronger protections for victims.

ECLC CEO Michael Smith welcomed the reforms, saying “We welcome these reforms because they make the law clearer and strengthen protections for victims.

“Too often these forms of abuse have been overlooked, and this is an important step towards a safer and more effective family violence intervention order system.”

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a moving, fun and extremely well-written superhero flick, Peter Parker (Tom Holland), aka Spider-Man, must deal with a new bodysnatching threat while undergoing a disturbing genetic metamorphosis.

Holland is phenomenal as a kind, humble but more mature Peter Parker, and really sells Peter’s inner turmoil and painful physical transformation. Brand New Day features kinetic, thrilling action sequences, some exceptional shots and more natural humour than in most MCU movies (I’m glad Marvel has largely gotten over its quippy tendencies).

Watching the trailers, I was skeptical that Brand New Day could keep all its plates spinning, but the film effectively employs its legion of villains and side-characters as cool threats, red-herrings or engaging flavour. Exploring the need to accept your true self and make peace with the past, the plot has surprisingly great pacing, with a steady build of set-up, escalation, shock and culmination. Sadie Sink is compelling as Jean Grey, a scary yet sympathetic main antagonist driven by isolation and grief, and a scene of her telepathically hopping through a chain of bodies uses a really impressively-choreographed panning shot.

Mark Ruffalo has quite a small role as Bruce Banner, but casts a meaningful shadow over the rest of the film through his power-inhibiting device (and yields an awesome action scene as the Hulk). Peter and the vigilante Frank Castle, aka the Punisher (Jon Bernthal), develop a touching adversarial friendship (although some will object to the famously deadly Punisher being softened like this). The only weak link is Florence Pugh’s fun but extraneous cameo as Yelena, leader of the New Avengers.

Playing in most Victorian cinemas, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a rare modern blockbuster that commits to so many ideas and characters but pulls it all off magnificently.

Frosty clean-up in Belgrave Despite a cold, crisp Hills morning, sixteen dedicated volunteers turned out on Saturday 1 August for a Community Clean Up organised by the Belgrave & Tecoma Township Group (BTTG), demonstrating the pride local residents have in their township.

A collaborative effort involving the BTTG, the Belgrave Traders Association and Yarra Ranges Council, volunteers concentrated their efforts on Blackmoth’s Way in Belgrave, an area that has attracted considerable attention on social media because of ongoing litter issues.

BTTG Town Beautification lead, Liz Beaton, said the group recognised that keeping Belgrave clean was an ongoing challenge.

“We know that litter control is difficult in our town, given the significant tourist traffic, particularly on weekends,” she said.

“We also know that local traders and Council work hard to keep our town clean, sometimes, however, they need a hand.”

Ms Beaton said that the BTTG values working together with individuals, organisations and community partners to make things better for everyone who lives, works and visits Belgrave and Tecoma.

“The strong turnout highlighted the willingness of local residents to contribute their time and energy to improving the appearance of their community.,” she said.

Community leaders also joined in, including member for Monbulk, MP Daniela De Martino and local Lyster ward Yarra Ranges Councillor Peter Mcilwain.

The BTTG hopes the clean-up will be the first of many opportunities for residents to become involved in practical community action.

The next Community Clean Up is planned for October and details will be available closer to the date on the BTTG website at www.bttg.org.au and on the group’s Facebook page.

Housing emerges as Australia’s biggest economic challenge Australia’s economic growth is expected to slow as lower house price growth weighs on consumer spending and broader economic activity, with CommBank economists saying housing is now expected to be a bigger drag on the economy than higher oil prices.

Speaking on the latest episode of the CommBank View: Economics & Markets podcast, CommBank Head of Australian Economics Belinda Allen said the shape of Australia’s slowdown had changed over recent months.

“We’ve certainly seen a shift in what’s going to cause the Australian economy to slow,” Allen said.

“We still think that’s going to happen, but it’s really the housing market that’s going to create that slowdown in the Australian economy, rather than higher oil prices.”

The slowdown in home price growth that emerged in late 2025 has now spread across Australia’s housing market, with weaker conditions for sellers evident in most major capitals.

Allen said higher interest rates and policy changes had weighed on sentiment and prices.

“That combination of factors has seen the housing market pull back, and we’ve seen in past cycles that does impact the consumer through what economists call the wealth effect,” she said.

Falling home values typically make households feel less financially secure, encouraging them to save more and spend less. Allen said

that dynamic was now expected to be a key drag on economic growth throughout 2026.

Consumer spending is also showing signs of moderation.

Allen said CBA’s internal data suggested endof-financial-year sales activity had softened compared with the same period last year.

“There are signs that consumers are pulling back,” she said.

While household savings remain relatively healthy overall, Allen said weak sentiment and softer home prices were likely to keep consumers cautious through the remainder of the year.

Commonwealth Bank forecasts Australia’s economic growth will slow from 2.5 per cent in late 2025 to 1.5 per cent by late 2026, before improving to about 2 per cent by late 2027.

Despite the housing-led slowdown, Allen

said data centre development to fuel AI compute investment was creating important longer-term opportunities for the Australian economy. She cautioned that growth would be constrained by energy availability, water use and the time required to build new facilities, and that while it would help Australia’s economy, it was not going to fully make up for the slowdown in the consumer sector.

Gully shines despite rain Wet weather wreaked havoc across local tennis on Saturday, with most Eastern Region Junior matches washed out.

Ferntree Gully’s Junior Development Competition (JDC) 3 team was the only junior side to take to the court, making the most of the dry conditions at Box Hill to record an impressive 3-0 victory.

Across most of the region, courts were too wet for play, resulting in widespread washouts.

In the Midweek Eastern Metropolitan Region Ladies’ Tennis Association, Ferntree Gully’s Section 6 side narrowly went down to Eley Park.

Although the match finished level on three sets each, Eley Park claimed the win on games, 42-38.

Thursday night proved to be a successful one in the Knox District Night Tennis Association.

Section 1 defeated Donvale 3-2, while Section 4 enjoyed a convincing 4-1 win over Emerald.

There was also a friendly club derby in Section 5, with the AS team edging out their Ferntree Gully clubmates from the JB team in a close 3-2 contest.

It was another challenging week for the Ferntree Gully and District Ladies’ Tennis Association Section 3 side, who were defeated 4-2 by Batterham Park despite another determined performance.

In the Waverley Tennis Association, Section A1 travelled to Narre Warren and were defeated 6-0, while home fixtures for Sections A7 and A8 were both washed out due to the persistent rain.

Luckily the weather was fine on Thursday so our All Abilities players could take to the court.

Head Coach Mark put the crew through their paces with a variety of skills and drills and some singles matches.

With plenty of tennis lost to the weather, players will be hoping for clearer skies next weekend as competitions resume across the region.

Friday night frustration Templestowe Wolves travelled to the hills on Friday night for a blockbuster clash with Monbulk Rangers, with plenty on the line in the race for promotion.

On a bitterly cold evening, second-placed Templestowe faced third-placed Monbulk in front of a strong home crowd, with the club also hosting its annual Life Members and Sponsors Night.

Monbulk Rangers’ FV Men’s Seniors and Reserves returned home looking to continue their push for State League 4 promotion.

The occasion created a great atmosphere, with plenty of support behind the Rangers as they chased a crucial three points.

The Reserves kicked off the evening facing a difficult challenge.

Short on numbers, the side had no substitutes available. Templestowe made the perfect start with two early goals, but the Rangers dug deep to keep the visitors to just two despite their limited squad, eventually falling 2-0.

As the Seniors took to the pitch, the temperature continued to drop and fog rolled across the ground, setting the scene for a tense contest.

The opening half was a cagey affair, with clearcut chances at a premium.

Monbulk’s best opportunities came through Brayden Jones, who pounced on a wayward Templestowe pass before firing narrowly wide.

Shortly after, Jack Higgins slipped Jones through on goal, forcing a strong save from the Wolves goalkeeper.

The Rangers also felt they should have been awarded a penalty when striker Jaydon Steele was brought down inside the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.

Just before the break, the visitors capitalised on one of their few opportunities.

A dangerous free kick was fired towards goal, with goalkeeper Brad Cutts making the initial save.

However, the rebound fell kindly to a Wolves attacker, who reacted first to tap home and give Templestowe a 1-0 lead on the stroke of half-time.

Monbulk responded strongly after the interval

Ahren Angulo battles for possession. (The Sporting Wall) and were comfortably the better side, continually knocking on the door in search of an equaliser.

The Rangers created a number of chances, with several long-range efforts narrowly missing the target.

Steele came close with a superb free kick that was brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by the Wolves goalkeeper.

Moments later, Higgins delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area that clearly struck the

hand of a Templestowe defender, but once again the referee waved play on, much to the frustration of the home side.

Despite dominating much of the second half, Monbulk couldn’t find the breakthrough, with Templestowe holding on for a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

It was a scoreline that arguably didn’t reflect the balance of play, as the Rangers were left wondering what might have been after several key de-

cisions went against them.

The result, combined with Lyndale United’s victory, sees Monbulk slip to fourth on the ladder.

After a bye next weekend, the Rangers return home for another Friday night blockbuster against Lyndale United, who now sit one place above them.

With promotion to State League 4 on the line, the clash shapes as one of the biggest matches of the season.

Mt Evelyn overrun Monbulk

By Armin Richter Football Seniors Monbulk’s roller coaster late season run towards the finals continued with a visit to premiership fancies Mt. Evelyn. The ground was heavy around the cricket pitch but the sunny afternoon was a welcome compensation. Kai Linde lined up for his 100th senior match and Will Henderson made his 50th appearance. The Hawks played a brilliant first half, restricting the Rovers to two goals four behinds with superb pressure, structure and link up play.

Monbulk’s 11 point half time lead was tested in the third term as Mt. Evelyn found avenues through the centre of the ground and left the Hawks 8 points in arrears at the last change. The Rovers continued with a strong last quarter leaving Monbulk with a 36 point loss which had however been full of merit throughout. Monbulk’s yo-yo season continued as they dropped back to seventh, but again less than two percent out of fifth place behind Upwey and Woori. Over the last four weeks they have been fourth, seventh, fourth and seventh respectively, and will face the undefeated flag favourites Wandin at home this week.

It was not ideal for Monbulk to learn by game day that the bare 18 players selected on Thursday had dwindled to 16 by match day. Under 18s players Finley Ede, Isaac Mullinder and Mitchell Clark agreed to play a second game to allow the Hawks one player on the bench. Matt James, who had first played in 2010, finally notched game 100 after an interrupted career while Dale Ross appeared for his 50th. While the final margin was significant, the Hawks battled hard against the odds all through.

Evelyn are reigning grand finalists while the Hawks sit in tenth place with 5 wins. This disparity wasn’t obvious as the much improved Monbulk side put up another strong performance of committed team play. The Hawks eventually succumbed by three goals but will eye off a few more wins in the run home.

Evelyn side is their A Grade netball team. This perennial powerhouse had defeated Monbulk by 41 goals earlier in the season but the Hawks put up a much better performance on Saturday, with plenty of intercepts, turnovers and good transition play. Monbulk eventually went down by 17 goals, a very meritorious effort considering only Wandin had gotten closer than that this year. Jorja Wragg was great in her 50th club match.

Monbulk Maroon’s win keeps them in sixth place and within striking distance of a finals spot, a game behind Wandin Blue.
