SRL on track?

The State Government would save about $21 billion over the next decade if it canceled the Suburban Rail Loop, according to Parliamentary Budget Office estimates.

The under-construction $34.5 billion SRL East rail tunnel linking Cheltenham to Box Hill was in the spotlight during a tumultuous week of state politics, in which Ben Carroll and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams sworn in as the state’s new Premier and Deputy Premier team.

Libertarian Party leader David Limbrick, who re-

quested the PBO report, says the costings show it is “absolutely not too late to cancel the SRL”.

SRL East is the first of four sections of a 90-kilometre orbital railway line stretching to Melbourne Airport and the Werribee line.

Major works have begun across six future stations on SRL East, with tunnelling set to begin in coming months. The first stage is scheduled to open in 2035.

In its recent State Budget papers, the Government stated that $13 billion of construction contracts had been awarded for SRL, with station works contracts

to be awarded in 2026 and 2027.

Limbrick said it would be “irresponsible” to proceed with the project while there was a Royal Commission into the construction sector.

“I speak to a lot of people in the South East, and absolutely nobody is pining a direct train trip from Cheltenham to Box Hill.

“However there are plenty of people in Heatherton with very valid concerns about the rail yards and plenty of people across the electorate concerned about links to organised crime.”

Premier Ben Carroll, in response to questions on the SRL’s cancellation, told Parliament on 29 July that “we will not be cancelling contracts”.

Advocacy groups Greater South East Melbourne and Public Transport Users Association backed the project’s importance, but urged better bus links across the region.

Meanwhile a Star News readers poll supported the SRL, with just 39 per cent in favour of cancellation.

Donor registrations drop to 10%

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong has the lowest rate of registered organ and tissue donors in the state, according to recent stats.

A paltry 10 per cent of the eligible population have registered to give the ‘gift of life’ – well below Victoria’s average of 23 per cent and a national average of 36 per cent.

In 2025, new registrations dropped in Greater Dandenong by 29 per cent, Casey by 17 per cent and Cardinia by 23 per cent.

This is despite community surveys showing most Victorians were in favour of organ donation - which can save the lives of up to seven people.

And many more people’s lives are changed through eye and tissue donation.

DonateLife specialist nursing coordinator Erin East says sadly the lagging registrations create longer delays for critically unwell patients, with some dying without a transplant.

In her role, East is often leading difficult, important conversations with bereaved families about whether they will donate the organs of loved-ones.

She says it’s a job she’s “incredibly honoured” to perform. To give some meaning to a devastating, terrible event for a family.

“We meet them on the worst day of their life “To this day, I am still in awe of how families can consider supporting other people in the com-

munity, with a feel for the greater good.

“Our role is not to coerce them. We provide them with the information and guide them to what they want to do – and what their loved one would want to do.”

Nearly all families (90 per cent) consent to their loved one’s organ donation if they are a registered donor.

But if the person is not registered, about 40 per cent say ‘no’.

“It’s always an easier decision if the donor is registered. We let them know it’s their loved one’s wishes.

“When their loved ones come into the emergency department, all the medical decisions have been made by the hospital for the families.

“This decision (on organ donation) is an opportunity for them to advocate for what their loved one would want to do. It’s really empowering for the families.”

East says families draw comfort from organ donation over time, receiving updates on how their loved one has helped others live on.

“It’s important to talk about the potential benefits, what they were like as a person and what was important to them.”

She says Dandenong’s cultural diversity presents a challenge for communication, despite in-language pamphlets and interpreters available.

“It can be tricky meeting the needs of families

with diverse backgrounds. It can be hard to meet their needs in those times.

“That said, no family is the same even if they have the same beliefs or faith.”

She thinks the overall drop-off in organ donation registrations may be linked to the Covid pandemic.

“People don’t have the same headspace. It’s almost like a fatigue with hospitals.

“I feel people used to be more curious about it – but now they get the information and just politely decline.”

She’s supportive of people opting in as donors, rather than an opt-out system - because the choice needs to be altruistic, she says.

DonateLife Victoria state medical director Dr Rohit D’Costa said nearly all of surveyed Victorians support organ donation, yet less than a quarter are registered as a donor.

‘A recent community survey shows 90% of Victorians support organ donation, but less than one quarter have registered to be a donor.’

“It doesn’t matter how old or healthy you are – you can still register as an organ and tissue donor.”

D’Costa urged Victorians to register as an organ and tissue donor, and then tell their families that they’re a donor.

“Someone’s life depends on it.”

Open diary: Mayor defends attendance record

By Sahar Foladi City of Greater Dandenong’s mayor has hit back at claims that she’s set a limit of attending two functions a day.

A fired-up Sophie Tan suggested Star Journal look at her diary after an article about her alleged two-events-a-day cap.

“I can’t be at two places at once,” she said.

“I have other things to do other than attending events.”

The allegation was raised by Cr Rhonda Garad at a 20 July council meeting, in which Cr Tan was absent.

Cr Tan told Star Journal that she’s attended 200 events since she was first elected as mayor and accused councillor Rhonda Garad of grandstanding.

“Instead of addressing this important issue of transparency, the Mayor has dismissed it as grandstanding.

“I’ll be asking the CEO to provide the official record of events and invitations accepted, declined or delegated by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

“The office of Mayor is a well-paid, full-time role, and the community has every right to expect openness and accountability in how those duties are carried out.”

The Greater Dandenong mayoral base allowance is $142,661 plus use of a vehicle.

A Labor party member, Cr Tan says she submitted for leave to attend the recent ALP 50th Anniversary National Conference before she was elected mayor.

“As a delegate you’re appointed to attend the conference,” Cr Tan said.

“It’s part of my private leave. It has nothing to do with my business (as mayor) or anyone’s business.

“It’s not part of council, I don’t need to declare anything.”

The conference was from 23 to 25 July in South Adelaide.

Highest for stolen plates Dandenong is Victoria’s No.1 suburb for numberplate thefts in residential streets, according to new Crime Statistics Agency data.

In the year to March, 14,431 number plates were stolen from parked cars in streets across the state.

Dandenong was the most impacted suburb with 310 offences, followed by Preston (213), Reservoir (197), St Albans (170) and Craigieburn (170).

Local hotspots include Windale, Langhorne, Bennet and David streets in Dandenong.

Police say numberplates are the most common item to be stolen from cars.

They are often used by criminals to “fly under the radar” and commit further offending such as burglaries, ram raids, petrol drive offs and to evade police.

Commander Jacki Kline, of Victoria Police’s North West Metro Region, has urged owners to take preventative steps to protect their plates.

“Parking in a secure area such a garage would be ideal scenario, however, we understand that not every resident or visitor to the area is able to do so.

“That’s why we encourage vehicle owners to use anti-theft screws to deter thieves in the first instance.

“Installing a simple measure such as an anti-theft screw can be the difference between having your numberplate stolen or not.”

Police say they are regularly seizing stolen numberplates during Automatic Numberplate Recognition Technology operations.

“Offenders thinking of using stolen numberplates to hide their vehicle should think again,” Cmmder Kline said.

“Police have more capabilities than ever to detect stolen numberplates on our roads – so they will be caught.”

Police also run Safe Plate Day events across the state where the community can attend and receive a free anti-theft screw fitted to their vehicle.

Anyone who has been the victim of a number plate theft can contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

‘Reset’ required, says deputy premier Newly-installed Deputy Premier Gabrielle Williams says the Government needed a “reset” after she led a cross-factional delegation that called for the ex-Premier Jacinta Allan’s resignation.

At a press conference on 28 July, the Dandneong MP said that the Government’s priorities needed to “better align” with the “priorities being discussed around kitchen tables around the state”.

“It has become abundantly clear from the past few days that a majority of the Labor caucus – after being out and about in their communities – felt that we needed a reset.

“That is what this was all about - making sure that with a new team that we could come in to ensure we were meeting those concerns where they were at in the Victorian community.”

The day before, Williams – a member of Allan’s Left faction - and five other of Allan’s ministers reportedly told the then-Premier that they no longer supported her and called for her to stand aside.

Williams had also reportedly visited Allan’s office with then-deputy premier Ben Carroll as the group’s preferred Premier.

Ultimately, Allan announced her resignation the following morning.

During a fiery caucus meeting, Williams defeated Allan ally Stephen Dimopoulos in a ballot for Deputy Premier.

Carroll was elected unanimously as Victoria’s 50th Premier after another Allan ally Sonya Kilkenny dropped her challenge for the leadership.

His first action was to announce a Royal Commission into the construction sector in response to multiple allegations of corruption on the government’s Big Build projects - a step that Allan had persistently resisted.

Williams said the new leadership would show that it can “deliver the sorts of reform that Victorians expect of us”.

And that “we can act and stand by a level of integrity that they fairly expect of their government”.

She said the Government had delivered “extraordinary things” over the past 12 years. “We want to build on that legacy,” she said.

She later posted a photo of Premier Ben Carroll, describing him as a man of “integrity and decency” and “studious, brave, sensible and caring”.

“It’s a privilege to be elected by my colleagues to serve as his deputy in service of the Victorian community.

“We’re not wasting a moment. It’s straight to work.”

Casey mayor Stefan Koomen, who previously worked as Williams’s electorate officer in Dandenong, said it was “great to see a local representative elected to Deputy Premier”.

“She is very attuned to the local community and understands the needs for the South East.

“It’s good to have someone represent those views at the top level. It’s very positive for our region.”

Greater Dandenong mayor Sophie Tan said Williams’s appointment to senior leadership was a “notable achievement” and an “important moment for our local community”.

On social media, councillor Rhonda Garad noted Williams’s major infrastructure projects but questioned if they were enough.

“For a community facing a housing crisis, rising homelessness, economic challenges and reduced maternity services, I believe Dande-

nong deserved stronger advocacy and better outcomes.”

Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre deputy chair and Dandenong ALP member Wicki Wickiramasingham described Williams as a “passionate supporter of Victoria’s multicultural communities”, earning “trust and admiration” across many diverse communities.

“She has built a reputation as a hardworking, approachable, and effective representative who has consistently delivered for local communities,” he said of the Dandenong MP. “What has always distinguished Gabrielle been her accessibility. She has consistently made herself available to residents, community organisations, and local leaders, listening to concerns, responding with empathy, and working tirelessly to deliver practical outcomes.”

Williams was first elected as Dandenong MP in 2014.

Within four years, she rose to the State Cabinet, serving as a Minister across portfolios including Youth, Aboriginal Affairs, Prevention of Family Violence, Mental Health and Government Services.

She is currently Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Public and Active Transport, and Women and Girls.

MPs dissect Allan’s legacy Liberal South Eastern Metropolitan MP AnnMarie Hermans said “a new Premier does not mean a new government”, in the wake of Labor’s leadership coup on 28 July.

“It is the same ministers, the same factions, the same union powerbrokers and the same failures,” Hermans said.

“Victorians should choose their Premier, not Labor’s factions and backroom powerbrokers. If they wanted to help Victorians, they should hold a state election now.

“A government that tears itself apart four months before an election has lost the stability, authority and confidence required to govern and if Labor cannot run its own party, it cannot run the state.”

Hermans said that Carroll helped create the Allan Government’s “failures” such as “the debt, the waste, the crime crisis and the corruption engulfing Labor’s Big Build”.

“He has been the Education Minister when Victoria has experienced the biggest teacher strike in Australian history, with some of the worst paid teachers and defunded under-developed and resourced schools.”

Legalise Cannabis MP Rachel Payne said Allan’s resignation was no surprise.

“It was clear that she had lost the confidence of the Victorian people, and that they want change.

“While as MPs we should be focused on cost-of-living and other issues, we have all been talking about IBAC and corruption. That’s not sustainable.”

Payne was disappointed that the Government didn’t work with Legalise Cannabis to achieve “common sense” law reform on cannabis.

“The rhetoric of ‘tough-on-crime’ is good for headlines but it does not actually work.

She paid tribute to Allan’s “groundbreaking work” on women’s pain and women’s health.

“Jacinta Allan has worked hard in a very difficult job.

“She has been on the end of some commentary that was unfair and, let’s be frank, sexist.

That should never be tolerated.”

Libertarian MP David Limbrick said Allan “started promisingly” as Premier, engaging with the crossbench “much better than (former Premier) Daniel Andrews”.

“But ultimately I don’t think she changed the direction of the Government.

“The bail laws led to a massive problem with repeat offending, and left people feeling unsafe.

“Her management of public funds also left much to be desired.

“She was instrumental in the $589 million Commonwealth Games debacle, but never fronted up to the inquiry I chaired.”

Limbrick described the Government’s machete bins scheme as “emblematic of a lack of care with public money”.

“I still haven’t received a good explanation of where all that money went. Hopefully a Royal Commission can get to the bottom of these kinds of issues.”

He urged Premier Carroll to tackle crime on multiple fronts.

“We need more police in the south east, a review of self-defence laws, and a trial period of legalising pepper spray.”

Labor MPs gushing, others silent on exPremier Allan

By Cam Lucadou-Wells There’s been a spectrum of reaction - and non-reaction - from Labor MPs in the South East to the fall of Premier Jacinta Allan.

Labor MPs Garry Maas, Belinda Wilson, Pauline Richards, Emma Vulin, Sonya Kilkenny, Tim Richardson, Meng Heang Tak, Eden Foster and Deputy Premier Gabrielle Williams gushed with photo tributes to Allan on social media.

Their MP colleagues Jordan Crugnale, Michael Galea and Harriet Shing had not posted tributes, as of 29 July. South Eastern Metropolitan MP Lee Tarlamis published lengthy praise for Allan the following day.

Planning Minister and Attorney General Sonya Kilkenny – a close supporter of Allan – posted on Facebook that she was “so proud to serve alongside Jacinta”.

“Her legacy is one of meaningful change - the metro tunnel, level crossing removals, north east link, major projects and hospitals.

And the SRL (Suburban Rail Loop).

“She also carried the burden of significant sexism and misogyny throughout her leadership. But always remained steadfast and determined to deliver for the people of Victoria.

“That resilience will inspire women in public life for years to come.”

During a fractious caucus meeting on 28 July, Kilkenny stepped back from challenging Ben Carroll in a party ballot for leadership and Premier.

South Eastern Metropolitan Labor MP Michael Galea told Star News that Carroll’s eventually unanimous endorsement showed they were a “united team”.

“People have made very clear to me that they weren’t happy with a number of things with the previous leadership and they wanted to see change.

“Truth is we work collegially across the factions and the show of support from across different parts of the party today, and in fact a unanimous endorsement for Ben Carroll to be the leader, shows that we are a united team.”

Galea said he’d become “increasingly convinced” of the need for a Royal Commission into the construction sector on government projects.

“Some of the allegations that we have all seen have been simply dreadful.

“It’s unacceptable to me as a local MP and it’s unacceptable to Victorians and Victorians rightly expect that every dollar of government money that is spent is spent wisely and that’s something that I’m very interested in seeing.”

There has been speculation that the $35 billion Suburban Rail Loop may also be reviewed.

Galea said it was however a “really important project for Victoria as a whole, but in particular the South East”.

“Where we are in the South East, we won’t have the Suburban Rail Loop running through our area, of course, but we will actually benefit greatly from that connectivity on our lines.”

“That’s really critical and that’s a project that we are committed to and I look forward to seeing that continue.”

‘Bike boy’ accused of trying to take car with children

By Tara Cosoleto, AAP A man suing former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews for defamation allegedly tried to take a car with a woman and two young children inside in Pakenham.

Details of Ryan Meuleman’s alleged offending were laid out in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday as he applied for bail.

It’s alleged Meuleman, dressed only in a hoodie and underwear, entered the driver’s seat of a car parked outside a laundromat on May 3.

Meuleman allegedly turned on the engine and started moving the car but the woman, who was inside with her two three-year-old children, started screaming.

They fought over the gear stick before the woman’s husband, who was inside collecting the family’s laundry, ran back to the vehicle and punched Meuleman.

The man pulled Meuleman out of the car and restrained him on the ground until the police arrived at the laundromat, the court was told.

It’s alleged Meuleman provided a fake name to officers but was otherwise incoherent when asked further questions.

He was allegedly on bail at the time for separate burglary and theft charges.

Police opposed bail on Wednesday, arguing Meuleman was a risk of reoffending or endangering the safety of the community.

But Meuleman’s barrister Tom Smedley argued his client should be released to residential rehabilitation so he could receive treatment for his drug issues.

Mr Smedley told the court Meuleman began abusing drugs after he was involved in a collision with a car when he was a 15-year-old cyclist.

Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. drews and his wife Catherine is the centre of Meuleman’s defamation case against the former premier.

The crash, and the events that followed it, have been widely referred to as the “bike boy” scandal.

Mr Smedley said there was a rehabilitation facility in Shepparton which had assessed Meuleman as suitable for their treatment program.

The regional Victoria centre would notify the police if Meuleman absconded or breached any of his bail conditions, facility manager Matthew Morovan told the court.

But magistrate Phillip Goldberg raised concerns about supervision after it was confirmed staff did not monitor patients between 11.30pm and 6.45am.

The bail application was adjourned to August 5 so defence could consider a possible electronic monitoring condition.

Meuleman’s defamation case has also been delayed by the criminal charges, with a hearing date yet to be set.

He has accused the Andrews of causing serious harm to his reputation, after they released a statement in 2024 in response to a newspaper

article.

The Herald Sun story claimed a review into the 2013 collision showed police had engaged in an “overt cover-up” and Mr Andrews’ story was “deeply flawed”.

The Andrews said they did nothing wrong and they would not dignify the “appalling conspiracy theories” by commenting further.

Meuleman claims the Andrews’ statement was improper and he should receive aggravated damages.

The Andrews have denied the defamation claim.

Housing emerges as Australia’s biggest economic challenge Australia’s economic growth is expected to slow as lower house price growth weighs on consumer spending and broader economic activity, with CommBank economists saying housing is now expected to be a bigger drag on the economy than higher oil prices.

Speaking on the latest episode of the CommBank View: Economics & Markets podcast, CommBank Head of Australian Economics Belinda Allen said the shape of Australia’s slowdown had changed over recent months.

“We’ve certainly seen a shift in what’s going to cause the Australian economy to slow,” Allen said.

“We still think that’s going to happen, but it’s really the housing market that’s going to create that slowdown in the Australian economy, rather than higher oil prices.”

The slowdown in home price growth that emerged in late 2025 has now spread across Australia’s housing market, with weaker conditions for sellers evident in most major capitals.

Allen said higher interest rates and policy changes had weighed on sentiment and prices.

that dynamic was now expected to be a key drag on economic growth throughout 2026.

“That combination of factors has seen the housing market pull back, and we’ve seen in past cycles that does impact the consumer through what economists call the wealth effect,” she said.

Allen said CBA’s internal data suggested endof-financial-year sales activity had softened compared with the same period last year.

She cautioned that growth would be constrained by energy availability, water use and the time required to build new facilities, and that while it would help Australia’s economy, it was not going to fully make up for the slowdown in the consumer sector.

Councillors to MPs?

By Jensy Callimootoo Casey Council has defended its governance processes after being questioned about safeguards to ensure councillors remain separate from personal state election campaigning.

The question, raised during July’s council meeting, referenced mayor Stefan Koomen’s recent public political activity in the Narre Warren South electorate.

It asked what measures were in place to ensure the mayor or other councillors remained focused on representing all Casey wards and that mayoral status.

And that public platforms and ratepayer-funded resources were not being used to support personal state election ambitions.

In response, the council pointed to its existing governance rules rather than outlining any additional oversight measures.

The response said the current governance rules include “requirements and guidance for councillors who choose to stand as candidates in State or Federal elections.”

Councillors had been briefed by officers in early July on the use of council resources, conflicts of interest, leave arrangements and the recommended separation of council duties and election campaigning.

“Officers recommended that councillors standing for election consider taking leave and, where relevant, stepping aside from leadership roles to avoid actual or perceived conflicts,” the response stated.

However, the council emphasised that compliance ultimately rests with individual elected representatives.

“It is the responsibility of each individual Councillor to determine what steps are appropriate in their circumstances,” they said.

The inquiry comes as speculation continues over the ALP member Cr Koomen’s political future.

Over recent weeks, Cr Koomen has declined to confirm whether he would contest the 2026 Victorian election but said he was keeping his options open, telling Star News he was “not ruling anything in or out.”

Recent public appearances by the Mayor in Narre Warren South alongside Labor figures have fuelled further speculation that he may seek the

party’s preselection for the seat.

On 29 July, he said: “It’s been a topic of discussion - if an opportunity arises, it is something I’ll consider”.

When asked how any potential candidacy would impact his mayoral and councillor roles, he said: “it’s not something that I’ll speculate on”.

“I won’t jump into hypotheticals, I’ll do everything that’s in the best interest of our community.”

The issue of councillors pursuing state candidacy has also been prominent elsewhere in Casey.

‘Stateof-theart’ STEM school opens in Dandenong A $14 million Tech School has been opened at Chisholm Institute’s Dandenong campus.

Secondary students from 23 schools will visit the Tech School for free, hands-on STEM learning, alongside their regular curriculum.

Among the lessons are to build robots, create virtual reality worlds and crack cyber breaches.

Chisholm Institute chief executive Stephen Varty said it will “inspire young people to explore further education and careers in STEM.” Students learn on the same technology used in modern workplaces – robotics, drones and virtual reality.

Every program is hands-on and linked to real careers – from advanced manufacturing to cybersecurity.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, who opened the Tech School, said it was a “world-class facility right here in Dandenong – and local students will be the ones who benefit”.

According to the State Government, independent research has found Tech Schools increase student engagement in STEM and build awareness of in-demand careers.

Dandenong Tech School is the second of six new Tech Schools opening across the state, as part of the Government’s $116 million funding.

Limbrick’s $21b case

By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Corey Everitt The State Budget’s bottom line would be improved by $21 billion over the next decade if the Suburban Rail Loop’s stage 1 was cancelled, according to Parliamentary Budget Office figures.

Speculation has mounted that newly installed Premier Ben Carroll might put the brakes on and request a review of the $34.5 billion rail tunnel from Cheltenham to Box Hill.

Libertarian Party leader David Limbrick, who requested the PBO report, says the costings show it is “absolutely not too late to cancel the SRL”.

“The sooner we stop it, the better.”

SRL East is the first of four sections of a 90-kilometre orbital railway line stretching to Melbourne Airport and the Werribee line.

Major works have begun across six future stations on SRL East, with tunnelling set to begin in coming months.

In its recent State Budget papers, the Government stated that $13 billion of construction contracts had been awarded for SRL, with station works contracts to be awarded in 2026 and 2027.

Limbrick said it would be “irresponsible” to proceed with the project while there was a Royal Commission into the construction sector.

“I speak to a lot of people in the South East, and absolutely nobody is pining a direct train trip from Cheltenham to Box Hill.

“However there are plenty of people in Heatherton with very valid concerns about the rail yards and plenty of people across the electorate concerned about links to organised crime.”

The PBO costings estimate $33 billion in savings on project works and interest expenses, if SRL East is cancelled.

This is offset by about $12 billion in contract terminations, worker retrenchments, foregone tax revenue as well as the loss of the SRL’s federal funding.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stated the $6 billion federal funds can only be used for the SRL. The PBO costings assumed the project was being delivered on budget and on time to open in 2035.

Premier Ben Carroll, in response to questions on the SRL’s cancellation, told Parliament on 29 July that “we will not be cancelling contracts”.

“That era is over.”

The day before, in his first question time, he said he would be “addressing all these matters through a cabinet process”.

In 2023, the State Opposition called for a pause on the SRL East works, with funds instead diverted to the Airport Rail project.

Greater Dandenong mayor Sophie Tan said the SRL and other major infrastructure initiatives were “decisions for the Victorian Government”.

She said the council’s transport priorities included a significant upgrade to Dandenong railway station, improved bus services and improvements to the Jacksons, Elonera and Chandler roads corridor.

The Government has previously argued the SRL will deliver an extra 11.8 million daily trips and help manage an 80 per cent increase in private vehicle trips by 2056.

Last year it estimated travel savings of up to 30 minutes, such as Dandenong-Box Hill or Narre Warren-Burwood.

Labor MPs in the South East attributed their emphatic 2022 state election wins to SRL East’s popularity.

South Eastern Metro MP Michael Galea remains supportive of the SRL. “The Suburban Rail Loop is a really important project for Victoria as a whole, but in particular the South East,” he said.

“Where we are in the South East, we won’t have the Suburban Rail Loop running through our area, of course, but we will actually benefit greatly from that connectivity on our lines.

Better bus services and road connections are needed to better realise the controversial Suburban Rail Loop’s benefits, says the Greater South East Melbourne advocacy group.

The up to $34.5 billion SRL East project between Cheltenham and Box Hill had “the potential” to improve connections between key employment, education and activity centres, a GSEM spokesperson said.

But it needed to be supported by local transport infrastructure that “helps people get where they need to go”.

“Our election platform makes it clear that the region needs better bus services, improved road connections and stronger links between communities and activity centres.

“Many residents still rely on cars because local bus services are infrequent, indirect or do not connect effectively with the wider public transport network.”

In its state election platform, GSEM calls for $100 million to boost bus services across the South East, as well as a Thompsons Road upgrade to Officer South and a Westall Road extension to Monash Freeway.

Public Transport Users Association spokesperson Daniel Bowen agreed that more frequent train and bus connections were needed in the South East.

“Many people at the moment have no viable choice but to drive, meaning huge impacts on household budgets, and inevitable daily traffic snarls across Melbourne.”

The SRL was required to provide more cross-suburban trip options and “fast, frequent” connections to some of Melbourne’s busiest destinations.

Bus, walking and cycling networks needed to feed people efficiently into the new stations, he said.

Liberal South Eastern Metro MP Ann-Marie Hermans said many in the South East had told her they prefer the long-awaited rail extension to Clyde and Cranbourne East, instead of the SRL. “Some locals still hope for an airport in the South East in the future, and others mention how difficult it is not being able to take a train directly to the airport.”

Crime Statistics Agency figures for the year ending March 2026 recorded 261 copper and scrap metal property thefts in Casey and 41 in Cardinia.

Victoria Police has said there is no dedicated copper theft taskforce, with local detectives investigating incidents.

Police said sporting grounds are among a range of locations affected, alongside roads, construction sites, new estates and manufacturing

areas.

Police have warned copper theft can cause major disruption and can also leave dangerous live wires exposed.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

City of Casey Manager of Active Communities Ali Neil said the City of Casey is aware of recent incidents affecting the Hallam Hawks Junior Football Club.

“Council officers remained in regular contact with the club, and worked to restore the power supply as quickly as possible,” she said.

“We recognise the disruption and financial impact this can have on clubs, volunteers and members in Casey, and we work closely with impacted clubs and user groups to minimise disruption to activities, including exploring alternative arrangements where required.

“Community groups affected by unexpected events may be able to access support through Council’s Quick Response Grants Program for eligible unforeseen costs, or our Minor Capital Works Investment Program for eligible projects that enhance the safety and security of community facilities.”

Copper thieves are hitting sporting clubs across Casey, leaving volunteers to deal with cancelled training, spoiled canteen stock and lost revenue.

Hallam Hawks Junior Football Club was the latest Casey club affected, with vice-president Raymond Garner saying volunteers arrived about 7am on Sunday 26 July to prepare for games and found switchboard doors open and copper cabling missing.

“We had no power for days,” Mr Garner told Star News on Tuesday 28 July.

“We’ve cancelled training for the seniors in the gyms for the last two days. That’s a shame.

“After our games on Sunday, we went to check our freezers and fridges. Everything was going off. Everything was not salvageable. So, we lost all their food from their fridges and freezers.

“It really set us back.”

He estimated the spoiled stock alone was worth “a couple of grand”, on top of lost canteen revenue.

Mr Garner said the area was dark and had few cameras and believed the theft appeared planned.

“They knew what they were doing,” he said.

Devon Meadows Junior Football Club was also hit earlier this month, with president Mel Alder saying copper was stolen overnight on Wednesday 8 July.

The outage forced training to be cancelled for all 26 junior teams and put about $2000 worth of canteen stock at risk.

A portable freezer saved much of the frozen food, but Ms Alder said the club still lost about $600 to $700 worth of refrigerated stock.

“We were very close to having to cancel all our games on the Sunday,” she said.

“We had 14 games at our grounds, and we almost had to cancel them, but City of Casey was able to get it all sorted on Friday afternoon, so I was thankful with the way they dealt with it.”

Push to lift rate cap

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Despite a third strike by council staff in three months, Greater Dandenong Council and its employees’ union have common ground in seeking a rise in the state’s rate cap.

Australian Services Union estimated more than 1000 of its members across eight councils stopped work and gathered on Parliament House steps on 30 July.

They included staff from Greater Dandenong libraries, aged care and street cleaning workforces.

The ASU is calling for “meaningful” pay increases as part of a multi-council enterprise bargaining agreement, including Greater Dandenong.

This includes a 10 per cent wage increase in the first year, followed by 4 per cent per year thereafter.

On 30 July, Greater Dandenong Council reported “minimal disruption” to its services, libraries and other facilities.

During 24-hour strikes in May and June, Dandenong Library was closed due to staff walking out on the job.

It is part of a long-running dispute of more than 12 months, in which the ASU claims that staff salaries can’t compete with inflation.

Wages for Greater Dandenong workers rose by 11.2 per cent between 2021-’25, but in real terms their earnings “went backwards” by 7.3 per cent over that time, the union says.

The ASU has ramped up its calls for Premier Ben Carroll to reform the State’s rate-capping

“Moving to ensure that councils have the capacity to fund local services properly and pay their workers fairly is something he can do on day one,” ASU state secretary Tash Wark said.

“Workers should not be made to wait while that reform sits in a drawer.”

Greater Dandenong chief executive Jacqui Weatherill says the council has supported the Municipal Association of Victoria’s advocacy to reform rate capping.

The council backed MAV’s submission to a 2024 parliamentary inquiry that found rate capping and cost shifting were a “key threat” to local governments’ financial sustainability.

‘Bin time’ on the Parliament steps. (ASU) The inquiry recommended an Essential Services Commission review of the rate cap formula – to consider the wage price index as well as construction costs and the capacity of ratepayers to bear higher rates.

“We note that not all the recommendations of that inquiry were supported or implemented,” Ms Weatherill said.

On the ASU’s calls for rate cap reform, the State Government has argued the rate cap was in line with the Consumer Price Index for 2025-’26.

It stated that the eight councils involved in the EBA had a healthy surplus of at least 10 per cent of revenue at the end of the past financial year.

The eight metropolitan councils are Melbourne, Greater Dandenong, Darebin, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Maribyrnong, Merri-Bek, and Yarra.

‘The whole country is watching’: HACC worker digs in for long EBA campaign

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Home and Community Care worker Wendy Phillips has been part of a few strikes in her 38 years at Greater Dandenong Council.

But the union delegate and ALP member says this one is a bit different.

This time, the Australian Services Union is not only dealing with eight metropolitan councils to finalise a multi-council enterprise bargaining agreement.

It is also putting the heat on the State Government as it seeks a 10 per cent wage rise in the first year for workers, followed by 4 per cent a year thereafter.

“In order for councils to fairly pay its workers, we need the state government to adjust the rate cap and to properly fund services,” Phillips says.

“The rate cap of 2.5 per cent isn’t in line with inflation. And the council says its wage offer is restrained by that 2.5 per cent.”

Phillips says the ASU has been in negotiations with former Premier Jacinta Allan and her successor Ben Carroll on the rates cap. She’s personally met with about 20 State MPs. “We believe we’re getting good traction. We’ve just got to get it signed off.”

Phillips says HACC workers, along with depot staff, are amongst the lowest paid at the council.

Cost of living is hitting them hard and wages “going backwards” in real terms.

They are paid a fixed fuel allowance for using their own vehicles at work.

But when fuel prices rise over $2 a litre, the allowance doesn’t cover the costs and workers are out of pocket.

“People might have to take the day off because they can’t afford to put fuel in their car until they get paid.”

Among their essential tasks are keeping elderly residents’ homes clean, maintained and fitted with modifications to make them safe.

They also help with showering and personal care, and take clients out on shopping trips, social outings and medical appointments.

“In the (Covid) pandemic, loneliness was so common. We were a key support.”

With HACC, the council is having to “top up” state and federal funding gaps, she says. And resources are getting stretched.

“Positions don’t get replaced when people leave.

“And the workload is distributed across the team, which leads to burn-out. Unpaid overtime just to keep up with the workload is quite common.”

During this protracted wage dispute, including three stop-work rallies, members remain “pretty staunch”.

“You absolutely get frustrated but you’ve got to keep going.

“Because this is the biggest EBA done in this country, with eight councils plus potentially another three - the whole country is watching.”

We have all heard the familiar phrase, “Don’t lose hope,” especially when life’s storms seem overwhelming.

Sometimes, these words are spoken from genuine concern; at other times, they are offered simply to comfort us.

Though they may sound simple, their message is profound: even in our darkest moments, there is always a flicker of light waiting to be found.

Reflecting on this, I am reminded of a story I shared with my children many years ago — a tale of five little field mice living in an old stone wall.

As winter approached, most of the mice busied themselves gathering food and preparing for the cold months ahead.

One mouse, Frederick, seemed different.

While his siblings collected nuts and seeds, Frederick appeared to retreat into a world of quiet contemplation and dreams.

When asked why he was not helping, Frederick explained that he was gathering provisions too — sunlight for the dark winter days, colours for the grey moments, and words and memories filled with warmth, beauty and joy.

When winter finally came, and the store of food began to dwindle, the mice huddled together in the cold.

It was Frederick’s treasures — his stories, his poetry and his memories — that nourished their spirits and reminded them that hope and happiness are not found only in what we can hold in our hands, but also in the beauty we carry within us.

Frederick’s story teaches us that every season of life — spring, summer, autumn and winter — has its own purpose.

No season lasts forever, and each carries within it the promise of renewal.

When we are facing despair or uncertainty, it can be difficult to remember that challenging times are temporary.

Yet, like winter’s chill, our struggles will eventually pass, giving way to brighter days.

So, when someone says to you, “Don’t lose hope”, may you hear more than a well-meaning phrase.

Hear it as an invitation to look beyond the immediate gloom, to draw on your inner strength, and to recognise the kindness and compassion of those around you.

Remember the warmth of the sun on your face, the beauty of a flower in bloom, and the laughter shared with those you love.

Hope is enduring.

It is an inner sunshine that remains, even when hidden by clouds, waiting to be rekindled.

It is the quiet assurance that, even in our darkest hours, better days lie ahead — just as surely as spring follows winter.

Hold fast to hope. It is the seed of a new season waiting to blossom in your life.

May you find the same hope and peace that I have found through my faith, and may you share that gift generously with others.

New accessible trail done A new accessible activity trail has been unveiled at Myuna Farm, a space for Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Doveton to expand support for people with disabilities.

On Monday 27 July, City of Casey mayor Stefan Koomen and Cr Lynette Pereira were joined

by RDA Victoria CEO James Lantry, RDA Victoria volunteers and participants, and members of the Endeavour Hills Men’s Shed to celebrate the opening of the new purpose-built trail.

The new Myuna Farm activity trail has been designed to help people living with disabilities experience the confidence and joy that comes from programs involving horse interaction and care.

It accommodates a horse and two side-walkers, and features a variety of interactive elements, including obstacles that encourage riders to navigate over, under, around and through structures.

“Today we celebrate not only the opening of a new Activity Trail, but also the values that underpin this important project within Casey, including accessibility, connection, participation and community spirit,” Cr Koomen said.

“The new trail will enable RDA to deliver safer, expanded and more inclusive programs for people living with disabilities, providing opportunities for physical activity, social connection, personal growth and increased independence.

“Most importantly, it creates an environment where everyone is welcomed, valued and supported.”

With support from Harrison Construction Management, Myuna Farm staff designed, constructed and landscaped the trail, while Endeavour Hills Men’s Shed volunteers also constructed many activity elements along the trail.

“The contribution of the Men’s Shed demonstrates the power of community partnerships and volunteering,” Cr Koomen said.

Local MP calls to expand family violence response

By Jensy Callimootoo The recent death of a woman in Clyde North has sparked a renewed push to expand Victoria’s immediate support services during family violence and domestic violence incidents.

Local MP Rachel Payne has made a call to the state government to expand Victoria’s Alexis Family Violence Response Model (AlexisFVRM) amid the tragic death of Brooke Timmins on Sunday night (26 July). Her partner was charged with her alleged murder.

If successful, the model could bring more specialist family violence workers to local police units.

As reported by Star News previously, currently one Alexis FVRM worker covers Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong; with advocates warning the region is missing out despite recording some of the state’s highest rates of family violence.

The Legalise Cannabis MP said the model,

along with active consultation with local First Nations and culturally and linguistically diverse communities would be essential.

While Payne recognised that the model may not be a“perfect” solution, she also said that it was better than what the state has now or has had in the past.

“It would be a mistake in this space to let “perfect” be the enemy of “much better”. We start here, it is not an end point,” she said.

The Alexis model embeds specialist family violence practitioners within police family violence units, allowing victim-survivors to access immediate support, risk assessment and referrals alongside police intervention.

During a domestic violence call out it will pair a specialised support worker with a police unit. In piloted areas, research found that 65 per cent of victim survivors left the program at lower risk and 78 per cent of victim-survivors felt better supported.

After being trialled in three locations, the program has expanded to five police units.

Payne said the results demonstrate it should now be available statewide.

“What has been communicated to us by the sector is the importance of having family violence workers from the local community,” she said.

“For many migrant and refugee women, there can be little trust in police or even social workers, so it is critical that any model focuses on place-based solutions rather than assuming one mainstream approach suits every community.”

The Parliamentary Budget Office estimates a statewide expansion would cost about $10 million annually, funding Alexis-FVRM workers in the remaining 24 family violence police units across Victoria.

There are currently 29 units statewide, with only five operating under the model.

Asked whether anticipated leadership changes within the Victorian Labor Party could delay reform, Payne said she hoped family violence would remain above politics.

“Family violence is something that all MPs know is a crisis,” she said.

While acknowledging the Victorian Government had made significant progress in responding to family violence, Payne said the continuing deaths of women highlighted the need for greater urgency.

“If 40 men had been killed this year from, for example, ‘king hits’, we would be treating it as a much more critical emergency,” she said.

“The worst thing we can do is turn away because it all seems too hard or impossible.

“Alexis is not a perfect solution, but it is something that can be done right now and will achieve much better outcomes.”

This year alone, over 40 women have died in Australia.

Meanwhile, the Action Committee of Dandenong West Primary School secured an 85 percent response from parents to its “stay-home” protest against the Education Department. A letter was sent home to parents asking for support of the committee’s stand against the department’s refusal to provide a new toilet block.

A committee spokesman said the action had been forced by “lack of response” to the continual appeals for improved toilet facilities. “There are only about a dozen toilet pans to cater for

487 children; the boys’ urinal is without a roof and the wash basins used for washing hands are also used for disposing of the school’s liquid waste.”

20 years ago 7 August 2006 Manningham’s CEO to lead Dandenong The hunt for a chief executive officer for Greater Dandenong Council is over. Manningham CEO John Bennie will fill the role in early October after his appointment was backed. He will replace interim CEO Brian Payne, who filled the top job when Carl Wulff resigned in May. Mr Bennie said applying Melbourne 2030 and redeveloping Dandenong’s centre were the most significant issues facing the city. Dandenong mayor Peter Brown said Mr Bennie was well equipped to tackle such challenges. “We’ve got a CEO of considerable experience and among the number of attributes he showed was his capability to negotiate with developers.” Cr Brown said more than 50 applications were received

for the position.

Author Martin Curtis’s 25-year history of the city is captured in a council-commissioned book, The Making of the City of Greater Dandenong. In 1994, the merger of the cities of Dandenong and Springvale with parts of Cranbourne and Berwick Shires was part of the Kennett government’s mass amalgamations of local councils. Curtis tells of the shock when the entity’s initial new name – City of Heatherton - was proposed. And how Dandenong councillor Frank Holohan fronted Premier Kennett directly to reinstate the Dandenong name. But beyond the tensions, Mr Curtis shows there is much to be proud of in the community.

An ode to founding dream

By Jensy Callimootoo As Dandenong-based Wellsprings for Women celebrated their 32nd anniversary, laughter, tears and pride resounded through the room with many reflecting on its journey to what it has become and what it strives to be.

The event hosted over 50 community members, local politicians and key employees within the organisation, as they also welcomed their Strategic Plan for 2026-30.

The crowd heard from those with first-hand experiences, who have used Wellsprings’ services throughout its 30 decades of providing fundamental support — including Kawsar Nazari.

Kawsar is originally from Afghanistan. She fled to India where she faced extreme hardship, telling her story of how she spent three days on the side of a road without food.

Upon her move to Australia, she describes the help she received from Wellsprings as a “mother’s hug”.

A warm, receiving and loving relationship in which she’s been able to develop her English and enriched her dream of one day becoming a police officer.

As Chairperson Janet Cribbes touched on, what started off as a dream at a kitchen table, became an ever-growing safe haven for women from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Sister Ann Halpin first started Wellspings as a drop-in centre for women, after noticing how many were suffering from loneliness, poverty, mental illness, family violence or lack of english.

could learn, connect and rediscover their confidence,” said Cribbes, recounting her inner purpose that catapulted a movement.

“That dream began around a kitchen table with a small group who affectionately called themselves ‘The Dreaming Group’.

“Together they imagined a place run by women for women, a place inspired by the timeless tradition of women gathering around a well to share stories, wisdom and encouragement.

“The well symbolised life, resilience and hope, and those qualities became the foundation of everything Wellsprings would become.”

Looking to the future, the organisation’s four year plan will be rooted in the same values it was founded on including courage, hospitality, hope, compassion, justice and wonder.

But its five main strategies aim to go further with its reach, focusing on factors such as community development, education and capacity building, safety and wellbeing and research and impact.

It also plans to expand its funding capacities, aiming to grow and optimise its services through local councils to better help women, youth and children who face isolation and violence.

Since then, the organisation has grown now helping women across the South-East, including Casey and Cardinia.

As the event drew to a close, CEO Dalal Smiley echoed a poignant remark; referencing the politically-rocky realm that many Victorians are bracing for as funding and support for key services such as Wellsprings grows increasingly vulnerable.

“We are all experiencing moments in our country where we just shake our heads, pinch ourselves and just say, is this really happening?” said Smiley.

“I really look forward to Gemma coming,” Joan said. “She’s a lovely person, an efficient worker and I love our chats which are mostly about our families.”

Phar Lap immortalised After a two-and-a-half year gallop, a sculpture of revered racehorse Phar Lap has been unveiled at Braeside Park.

Community groups gathered to celebrate the rustic elegant tribute for ‘Big Red’ on the centenary of his birth on 1 August – the traditional birthday of racehorses in the Southern Hemisphere.

The tall New Zealand-born chestnut with a renownedly large heart trained at the park by Harry Telford during a famous 14-race winning streak including the 1930 Melbourne Cup. A memorable bond was forged with strapper Tommy Woodcock, who called the horse ‘Bobby’.

Phar Lap was perhaps the park’s most famous former resident, Friends of Braeside Park president Judith Sise OAM said.

Live music, poetry, birthday cake and a toast was made to the legendary racehorse, who enraptured a nation during the Great Depression.

Dingley Village Men’s Shed member Peter O’Leary drafted a poem for the occasion: “If you’re ever down in Braeside Park when day and dark just meet, “You can sometimes hear the rhythm of a galloper’s steady beat.

“And as the mist begins to rise, you might hear Tommy whisper low, “Bobby boy, you gave us heart, and more hope than you’ll ever know.”

The 312-hectare park has had several guises as swamp, market gardens, grazing land, racing stables, sewage treatment plant and now a Parks Victoria bushland and wetland.

On the day, seven painted panels depicting the wide and varied history were also revealed. They will form a permanent ‘stump gallery trail’ on the area’s Cypress Drive. The project was a collaboration between Dingley Village Men’s Shed, Dingley Village Historical Society, artists from U3A and Kilbreda College, Keysborough Bunnings, Parks

“A project of this scale could never have been achieved by one person,” Sise said.

Likewise, there’s been much toil by volunteers to restore the park into the wetlands oasis of today.

When the sewerage plant closed 50 years ago, the park was sparsely vegetated. Friends of the park and Parks Victoria rangers had helped restore the bush and to refill the drained wetlands.

“It’s always hard to restore it when you do that much damage.

“I love helping people feel comfortable,” Courtney says.

Worry for Bulls and Hawks

Break Glass” buttons at Rowville and Noble Park are feeling a little vulnerable right now after the 2026 aspirations of the Hawks and Bulls took negative twists on Saturday.

The hammers out are for both clubs…for differing reasons.

Rowville still sits second on the ladder after the weekends round of matches, but the Hawks appear further away from their first premiership since 2023 than they have all year after top-team East Ringwood gave them a pure football lesson.

The Mighty Roos kicked the opening five goals of the match, and the last five as well, winning by 62 points…13.15(93) to 4.7(31) on the Hawks home deck at Seebeck Oval.

This was expected to be one of the matches of the season in Eastern Premier Division, but when James Gilchrist ran through 50 and kicked a long goal off his left; the scores were 35-1 and the Hawks hadn’t fired a shot.

East Ringwood continually forced turnovers with elite pressure through the middle third of the ground, then spanked the Hawks by running in waves when moving forward.

The Hawks had no answers, with 10 scoring shots to two and a scoreline of 5.5 to 1.1 at quarter time indicative of the gap between the two teams.

Rowville full-forward Lachlyn Wynd did provide the Hawks with a glimmer of hope, either side of the first break.

He nailed a set shot at the 24-minute mark of the opening term, after some clever set up play from Brock Coleclough, before kicking the opening goal of the second stanza after being hit on the chest by a piercing-rocket from Tyler Edwards.

The margin was 22 points, two minutes into the second; but it would never get closer than that for the remainder of the afternoon.

The Hawks kicked one more goal in the second term, and one more in the third, but were otherwise comprehensively outplayed by the visitors.

East Ringwood led by 29 points at the sevenminute mark of the third quarter, before kicking the final three goals of the third, and the only two majors of the final term, to put the finishing touches on a wonderful display of team football.

Roos’ skipper James Belo was best afield with a terrific game through the midfield, while Liam Coghlan, Tyson Sruk and Jackson McDonald joined Edwards as the Bulls’ best players on a very tough day at the office.

The Hawks currently sit second and have a two-game-and-percentage buffer over fourthplaced Vermont - so should still finish in the topthree and earn a double-chance for finals - but have now lost back-to-back games for the first time this year.

And the assignments only marginally get easier for the Hawks, with a trip to Edwin Flack Reserve to take on fifth-placed Berwick the next

Noble Park, meanwhile, is running out of chances to bounce from the bottom rung of the ladder after the Bulls were over-powered by Berwick in a last-quarter barrage at Edwin Flack Reserve.

The Bulls were highly-competitive until the final term, the Wickers younger legs and gut-running finally taking their toll in an 8.3 to 2.2 quarter that led to a convincing 14.14(98) to 8.5(53) victory.

The Bulls only trailed by 11 points at half-time; at that stage the biggest margin of the match, and cut the deficit to just two points after Kevin Kean and skipper Ben Marson kicked the opening two goals of the third quarter.

The gap was still only eight points, three minutes into the last, before Berwick kicked seven unanswered goals to race away with the contest.

Marson ended with three goals for the Bulls,

and brother Jordan Marson two, while skipper Lachie McDonnell kept his team in touch for large portions of the match with a dogged display through the midfield.

The Bulls now have only three opportunities to jump from the bottom of the ladder, beginning with a home game against sixth-placed Blackburn on Saturday.

Noble Park then hits the road, visiting seventhplaced Balwyn, before finishing off its campaign with a visit to South Croydon; who currently sit eighth.

The Bulls are currently level on points with ninth-placed South Belgrave, but trail by 3.82-percent.

That gap could narrow this week, with South Belgrave’s percentage likely to take a hit when it heads to top-of-the-table East Ringwood this Saturday.

The relegation battle between the Bulls and Saints looks like going all the way down to the wire.

Thunder’s relegation reality after 3-0 defeat in ‘Derby’

By David Nagel Two giants of Victorian football - Dandenong Thunder and Green Gully - have now both been officially relegated from the top flight in the State after lowering their colours in round 23 of the NPL on the weekend.

Thunder will play its football in the Victorian State League next season after suffering a 3-0 defeat in the ‘Dandenong Derby’ against City at George Andrews Reserve on Saturday night.

Green Gully, meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Preston Lions; ending more than 50 years of playing in the top-flight in Victoria.

With just three games remaining, both Thunder and Green Gully sit on 15 points for the season; 11 points behind Dandenong City in 11th place.

City now sits six points above the cut-off line on 26 points, with Bentleigh Greens on 20 points and now heavily favoured to join Thunder and Green Gully in the final relegation zone.

City took little time in stamping its mark on the contest with a classy goal to open the scoring with just over four minutes gone by.

Welshman Jamie Latham controlled the ball beautifully off his chest, just inside City’s defensive half, before firing off a lengthy one-touch pass to Tim Atherinos, who made a terrific run down the left wing.

Isolated one-on-one, Atherinos drove into the box and weaved onto his left foot before producing a lovely cross that beat Thunder keeper Lewis Alvarez and landed at the feet of Pierce Waring.

The ex-Melbourne Victory Academy player simply had to lunge forward with his right foot and tap the ball in to an open net, the visitors leading 1-0 in the early stages of the match.

City maintained its advantage at half time, making the most of five shots on target to Thunder’s four.

Tension is always simmering not too far from the surface in the Dandenong Derby and things sprang to life in the 57th minute when some push and shove between City’s Will Bower and Thunder’s Frank Busasa ending in a coming together of both teams.

Both players were yellow carded, with the resultant free kick to Thunder landing ominously

in the box, with City keeper Matt Marrum forced into action.

Thunder had their chances to equalise, most noticeably in the 77th minute when substitute Mohamed Ali produced a strike that shaved the left-hand upright.

And City soon made Thunder pay a heavy price, with Gaku Inaba finding himself loose in the box to make it 2-0 with just four minutes left in regulation time.

Thunders’ relegation from the NPL was then confirmed when a powerful strike from Wade Dekker burst through the hands of Alvarez to make it 3-0 in the 88th minute.

City ended the night with nine shots on target, to Thunders’ five, and thoroughly deserved a well-constructed three points.

City’s final three rounds are against Altona (9th) and Preston (4th) at home before a round-26 visit to top-placed Oakleigh Cannons.

Thunder plays Preston at Preston then Oakleigh at Frank Holohan Reserve in its last home game in the NPL. The Thunder then says goodbye to its NPL status with a visit to tenth-placed St Albans.

Demons prevail in thriller

By Blair Burns It was a very even battle between two of the best sides in Southern Division 1 at Kalora Park on Saturday, but it was Bentleigh who prevailed over Narre Warren by two points, 15.11 (101) to 15.9 (99).

It was perfect sunny conditions at the home of the Magpies, with the sun beaming down for the senior match.

The last quarter went goal for goal but it was ultimately three late goals in the third term which were the difference and gave Bentleigh a six-point lead at the final break.

Sam Toner kicked a late goal to cut the margin back to two points to make for a nervous final 60 seconds which was filled with repeat stoppages in the midfield - the siren beating Narre Warren, who desperately tried to surge it forward and give itself a chance to steal the game.

The Magpies have now lost three of their last four games and are now holding onto second spot by just percentage, with Cheltenham and Bentleigh also on 40 points.

And of Narre Warren’s five losses this year, two have come against the Demons.

Narre Warren led by six points at quarter time in a goal-for-goal contest, before trailing by five at half time, and six at three-quarter time.

Some crucial free kicks went the way of the Demons late and the absence of Tom Toner, Julian Goerlitz and Joel Zietsman clearly hurt the black and white.

However, they did have Richmond VFL star Sam Toner back for the week and he made the most of it, troubling the Bentleigh defenders to kick four goals and providing some great leg speed through the middle.

On the flip side, Bentleigh was without Willis Reidy and Castan Racunica, who have been two of the team’s most dangerous forwards this year.

The ball quickly moved from end to end throughout the day, but the ease at which Bentleigh scored some of its goals would’ve concerned Narre Warren coach Steve Kidd.

Hamish West, Kurt Mutimer and Jake Richardson were among the Magpies’ best players, while Will Howe and Jett Kearney kicked three goals each.

Ben Hempel was a problem for the home side, presenting nicely and kicking five goals in the victory.

In other games, Cranbourne continued its charge towards finals and boosted its percentage for a second straight week with a 82-point win against Springvale Districts, 22.10 (142) to 9.6 (60).

After a tight first term where the Eagles led 2518, the home side put the Demons to the sword for the rest of the match.

Cranbourne kicked 18 goals to six from that point onwards and made sure it cruised to a second consecutive win by more than 80 points.

Unique tossing vehicle a platform for Collins’ success Heather and Steve Collins have moved into fourth place on the overall points standing in the Greater Melbourne Pigeon Federation season after winning the second race from Mittyack on Saturday.

It was a unique experience for the flyers on the weekend with a special tossing vehicle being used to begin the race.

The winning pigeon flew the 408.86-kilometre distance in four hours, 15 minutes and 42 seconds at a winning velocity of 1599mpm.

Team from Morning Mist filled the top-three placings, with Vince Araco coming second with a velocity of 1596, while J Stanley finished third, not far behind with a velocity of 1595.75.

The Greater Melbourne Pigeon Federation returns for the third race from Mittyack this Saturday, before Mildura becomes the focus for the remaining three Saturdays in August.
