The market, which runs from 9am to 2pm every Saturday, has been an unbridled success since launching in October 2025.

Supported by the City of Greater Geelong, the market has continued to evolve since that time, with new partnerships such as this continually giving people new reasons to visit the city centre and support the small businesses that call the region home.

Mental health hub

“It’s all about individual care, and we’re trying to focus on moving away from prescribed care that young people have to fit into,” he said.

“We see time and time again how mental health distress can harm a consumer, particularly a young person in their recovery journey. “(The centre will allow young people

to) continue engaging with their normal routines and daily life, while receiving more enhanced psychiatric and well-being supports through this process.”

Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant said the “critical new service” would create a big difference for young people and their families.

“When you’re having treatment, you want to make sure you’ve got a network around you,” she said.

“To travel to Melbourne is such a big trip for families, so to have this facility close to their community, school, families and support networks allows people to have real care.”

Young people now have access to specialised mental health support and care in the Barwon region.

The new Youth Prevention and Recovery Care (YPARC) centre opened in South Geelong on 10 July, which will provide early intervention and clinical care in a safe and welcoming environment.

Minister for Mental Health Ingrid Stitt said the free service would deliver specialist and around-the-clock care for up to 200 young people aged 16 to 25 annually.

“It’s all about making sure that people

can recover and really get that therapeutic wraparound support in a home-like environment,” she said.

“The key to YPARC is that there is support so that young people can continue to stay connected, whether that’s school, work, or other things in their lives that are important to them.

“We’re already operating the day program, but there’s recruitment happening now for the workforce to deliver the 10-bed facility, and that will be ramping up over the next couple of months.”

Lions den upgrades complete

By Matt Hewson Belmont Lions Sports Club has welcomed the official opening of the Winter Reserve upgrade project.

Delivered and funded in partnership by the Victorian government ($1 million), the City of Greater Geelong ($830,000) and Belmont Lions ($25,000), the upgrades are focused on providing equity and inclusion, especially for female and junior participants.

Club vice-president Tyrrell Hill said the second netball court, female-friendly changerooms, umpires room, fi rst-aid room, office and additional storage were already boosting participation and making the facilities more accessible for people of all ages, genders and abilities.

“The facilities at the club, probably for 10 years, have been way below par, and our netballers and now our female footballers have suffered through not having fair access and comfortable rooms,” he said. “(On gameday) a lot of the players would change in the public toilets or in their cars, or have to stay in their uniform for the entire day, which was a terrible situation to have.

“If you don’t have the facilities and you don’t put in the work to make it happen, are you really valuing the players as people and as participants?

“People want to go to clubs that value them, that have the culture that supports them and makes them comfortable and safe, and that’s what the facilities now give us the platform to deliver.”

The upgrade project was officially online as of late 2022, when Belmont Lions secured the state government funding.

But for Mr Hill, who has been involved in the club for more than 40 years, the completion of the upgrades has been a deeply personal matter.

“Every time I went and saw what (the female players) had to put up with, I was incredibly embarrassed,” he said.

“We made a promise in 2020, myself and Mark Edwards, who was president of the club at the time. We said that our legacy was going to be that we are going to get these facilities because our players deserve it; that was a commitment, a non-negotiable.

“So this is the delivery of a promise, and it will help us sustain for the next generation or more. We can build on it, we are building on it, and you can already see the positive outcomes of having these new facilities.”

Small business festival is ready to launch The 16th Geelong Small Business Festival will launch in early August.

Delivered by the City of Greater Geelong in partnership with the Geelong Chamber of Commerce, the festival will run from 3 to 7 August, with more than 50 free or low-cost workshops, masterclasses and events.

The Business Support Expo Lunch will launch the festival at Wurriki Nyal at 12.30pm on Monday 3 August, with free registration for the event now open to community members.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive Jeremy Crawford said the festival had been curated to provide participants with practical tools and strategies to start, sustain and grow their business.

“With small businesses accounting for 97 per cent of our local industry, it’s never been more important to create opportunities for upskilling and development,” he said.

“Th is is an event that delivers real results for businesses, every year participants tell us they leave with new knowledge, practical insights and valuable relationships that continue beyond the festival.

“Now’s the time to check out the program and start booking your tickets.”

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the program offered a diverse range of events that anyone in small business would benefit from.

Special event to remember the twister of 1926 A special service will invite community members to come together and commemorate 100 years since a tornado hit Greater Geelong.

Highton’s St John’s Anglican Church will host a 9am service on Sunday 19 July to celebrate the community’s resilience after a tornado left a trail of destruction across Highton, Belmont and Marshall in 1926.

Reverend Will Orpwood said the original church building was reduced to rubble during the storm.

“Within 12 months of the tornado striking Highton, St John’s was able to 2 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 17 July, 2026

re-open, which was an amazing feat,” he said. “The community swiftly rallied together to help those worst affected by the tornado and was determined to rebuild and start afresh.

“A century later and a further two major renovations and extensions along the way, St John’s remains a place of vibrant Christian faith and fellowship today.”

The tornado also led to the death of a six-year-old and 36 people injured, along with the destruction of more than 20 houses and public buildings and damaging 40 more.

Rev. Orpwood said the 100th anniversary was a time to reflect on the community’s resilience and camaraderie following the tornado.

“There are many parallels and message ‘take outs’ that can be drawn between the tornado experience and what the bible tells us about faith, perseverance and resilience,” he said. “During the 1926 rebuild, the church’s large stained-glass window was replaced with an image of Jesus calming a sudden storm on the Sea of Galilee while accompanying his disciples in their fishing boat.”

Have a say on road safety Road users and visitors across the Golden Plains can have their say on how to improve the region’s road safety.

Feedback is encouraged to help deliver Golden Plains Shire Council’s new Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2027–2037 to help reduce road trauma and improve safety during the next decade.

Mayor Owen Sharkey said every road user deserved to get home safely, and that community input would help shape future infrastructure upgrades and education.

“Our goal is to develop a practical, community-supported strategy that helps reduce fatal and serious injury crashes over the coming decade,” he said.

“We want to hear directly from residents, businesses, visitors and everyone who uses our roads about the challenges they face and the improvements they would like to see.

“Every piece of feedback we receive will help ensure the strategy reflects the needs of our communities and supports safer, more connected places for people to live, work and travel.

“It’s important that our community comes together to help shape a Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan that reflects local experiences and priorities, and supports safer outcomes for everyone.”

Crash data found that an average of 70 people were seriously injured while three people have died on the shire’s roads each year, with most crashes occurring on high-speed rural roads.

Community feedback can be provided at goldenplains.vic.gov. au/consultations until 5pm on 10 August, which will be considered as part of the strategy’s development.

Peer Healing Space now open Greater Geelong community members now have access to the state’s first peer-led residential mental health service.

The Peer Healing Space was opened in Moolap and will provide an alternative to hospital-based care for adults experiencing acute mental distress or crisis.

Minister for Mental Health Ingrid Stitt said the free service offered support in a home-like environment with tailored care.

“The Peer Healing Space puts people with lived and living experience at the heart of mental health care,” she said.

“This service provides a new option

for mental health care that gives people choice, while easing pressure on hospitals.”

Mind Australia will run the service with support from Barwon Health and Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative, with the first four rooms now open and more to come later in the year.

Lived experience executive director Katie Larsen said people could be referred to the service by professionals or by themselves, with each person having their own room and freedom to shape their day.

“The Peer Healing Space is designed by community, for community and offers

a new and different path for healing for Victorians experiencing mental health distress,” she said.

“It will also demonstrate outcomes and experiences that can support the continued transformation of Victoria’s mental health system, led by lived experience.”

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens said the service was an alternative to acute inpatient care to help reduce pressure on hospitals, with people able to stay at the facility for up to three weeks.

“This lived experience led service will provide personalised care in a comforting,

home-like environment for people across our region,” she said.

Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant said it was important to continue transforming mental health care across the state.

“Led by people with lived and living experience, this new service will provide invaluable support and guidance, making a meaningful difference for those seeking care,” she said.

The Peer Healing Space will provide 24/7 care and was backed by a $14.8 million investment from the state government.

GME announces appointments

Ceramic treat for market Geelong CBD’s vibrant Saturday market will have a brand new focus this weekend, with some of the region’s most talented ceramic artists proffering their wares.

Since launching in October last year, Geelong City Market has transformed Market Square Mall into a bustling hive of community activity every Saturday.

From seasonal produce to artisanal goods, street food to street entertainers, the council-backed market has continued to draw people from across the region to enjoy the heart of Geelong.

It has also given local producers and makers the opportunity to get their goods in front of a whole new audience.

This Saturday, the market will partner with the Geelong Ceramics Market to bring the region’s best handcrafted ceramics to the weekly event and give community members the chance to meet local ceramic artists as they peruse their works.

“Markets have always been places where communities gather and where people discover something they never knew they needed,” he said.

“Bringing together incredible ceramic artists alongside local farmers, producers and restaurants creates an experience that celebrates everything our region does so well.

“Whether it is a handmade bowl that ends up on the family dinner table or produce bought from a local grower, these are the things that make our city unique.”

Geelong council has announced three appointments to its Geelong Major Events (GME) Committee.

With major events playing an ever-increasing role in the city’s global profile and economic growth, the City of Greater Geelong has appointed new committee members Moshtix general manager of marketing Annie Callaghan and Crowne Plaza general manager John Dickson.

Local events and arts leader Robyn Birrell, already a member of the GME committee, has also been reappointed for another four years.

GME serves as advocate, support and funding body for major events in Geelong, attracting and backing a wide range of events that include the Avalon International Airshow, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, the National Celtic Folk Festival and the Discovering the Impressionists exhibition currently at Geelong Gallery.

Ms Birrell, who began her career in the creative industries nearly 50 years ago as an actor with Geelong’s The Mill Theatre Company and concluded it as Arts Centre Melbourne’s manager of future planning, said it was “a privilege and an honour” to be reappointed. “(GME) is of paramount importance to continue to profile Geelong nationally and internationally as the greatest regional city in the country,” she said.

“I represent the creative industries, but (the committee includes) people that represent tourism, major events, sporting codes, sponsorship and business development.

“We spend a small amount of money – $1.3 million a year – and for that we generate $80-90 million worth of activity in the City of Greater Geelong.

“It’s about seeing Geelong develop and grow…to evolve and deliver the diversity, the strength, the professionalism, the scope of events that the City of Greater Geelong is building on.”

Opposition pushes for 110km/h limit A Coalition state government would raise the speed limit to 110km/h on the Princes Freeway/Highway between Laverton North and Colac if it wins the November election.

Motorists are currently restricted to a speed limit of 100km/h although under the proposal, lower limits will still apply for areas such as Winchelsea.

The Coalition said the change would cut travel times, ease congestion and bring the Princes up to the same standard motorists expect on the Hume, Calder and Western freeways.

“By aligning speed limits on the Princes freeway and highway with the Hume and Calder, our plan will get Victorians where they need to be sooner,” Liberal leader Jess Wilson said.

“People travelling on the Princes shouldn’t be stuck in the slow lane, and under a Liberal and Nationals government, they won’t be.”

Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Roads and Road Safety Danny O’Brien said western Victoria had been left behind by Labor for too long.

“Western Victorians are sick of sitting in traffic on a road that should be moving at freeway speed,” he said.

“This is a freeway-standard road and it’s time the speed limit reflected that.

“The Princes freeway and highway is the primary link between Melbourne and Geelong, Colac, Warrnambool and the southwest, carrying freight, tourists and commuters every day. A consistent 110km/h limit will mean less time on the road and more time at home, at work or with family.”

Election call for investment

By Jena Carr The G21 Alliance is calling for more investment in the region’s industrial future, including Avalon Airport’s employment precinct, ahead of the upcoming state election.

The alliance has requested that all election parties commit to unlocking industrial land to support business growth, jobs and resilience.

G21 chair Jason Schram said targeted investment was needed to help meet future economic demands across the region.

“Key sites cannot reach their full

potential without the infrastructure and access needed to support development,” he said.

“Unlocking industrial land is essential to supporting business growth, job creation and economic resilience across our region.

“Avalon Airport is going to be a great driver, and if we can get that economic precinct, it’ll create thousands of jobs and opportunities for people.”

G21 will call for targeted investment at the Avalon Employment Precinct through a $1 billion Regional Infrastructure Fund to deliver growth and workforce capability.

The alliance will also support the Avalon

Airport Airline Attraction Fund to deliver matched funding for more than three years.

“We know that the more fl ights and passengers that come through Avalon mean a better economic outcome for our community,” Avalon Airport chief executive Ari Suss said.

“We’re delighted to present a united front with G21 to talk about opportunities that we collectively believe in and want to support in our region.

“An important part of that is to see more activity in and around Avalon Airport, so we’re asking the government and other parties ahead of the state election to

consider an airline attraction fund.”

Mr Suss said Avalon Airport was the “international gateway” to some of the country’s “iconic tourism regions”.

“We want to provide a choice for businesses and industries to set up here, as so many businesses have already,” he said.

“An Airline Attraction Fund would help attract new international services, bringing more visitors directly into Geelong and the G21 region.

“It’s an investment that strengthens Victoria’s visitor economy while creating jobs and economic growth across the region.”

Libraries saving memories and history Geelong Regional Libraries (GRL) will expand its program preserving local social history to a fourth library this month.

Corio Library will join Belmont, Leopold and Newcomb libraries as a provider of GRL’s Saving Family Stories service, which provides local community members free access to equipment and technical assistance to digitise and preserve their families’ photographic, film and video material.

Media types including VHS tapes, DVDs, Super 8 and 8mm fi lm, film negatives, slides, photographic prints and camcorder tapes can be digitised through the service, allowing important personal and social

histories to be archived and shared.

GRL acting chief executive David Semmens thanked service sponsor King Funerals for helping create a “lasting social impact”.

“Our shared commitment and values mean we can support community wellbeing and enable our libraries to offer free services like Saving Family Stories,” he said.

“Libraries remove barriers by providing free access to technology, learning opportunities and trusted spaces where anyone can participate, regardless of their background or experience.

Geelong’s mayor has called on the Minister for Police to provide permanent protective services officers (PSOs) in the city’s CBD. Mayor Stretch Kontelj wrote to Minister Anthony Carbines yesterday to request a permanent police presence in the centre of Geelong following the positive impact of the ongoing Operation Pulse.

“Time and time again, we’ve seen violence, anti-social behaviour, theft, vandalism and public disorder, particularly around the Moorabool Street bus interchange,” he said.

“These incidents are unacceptable, and make it harder for residents, workers, business owners and visitors to use central Geelong. I welcome Operation Pulse, which has seen PSOs operating in central Geelong, but it’s time for the government to make this permanent.”

Starting in December last year, Operation Pulse has seen PSOs and teams of police patrolling key retail locations across the state. In June, the operation was expanded to include Geelong, with police focusing on Westfield, Market Square and the Moorabool Street bus interchange.

“The introduction of permanent PSOs in central Geelong is a key opportunity for our community to see how the City and Victorian government working together can ensure Geelong is a safe, vibrant place to live and work, and an opportunity to send a strong message that community safety remains a priority.”

A blanket drive will support Geelong’s vulnerable community members by providing warmth and comfort.

Christian radio station 96threeFM will host The Big Warm Up community initiative today (Friday 17 July), with The God Squad Motorcycle Group and homeless service The Outpost delivering blankets across the region.

Administration manager Jo Collins said close to 300 blankets would be donated to people doing it tough during the colder months.

“Blankets won’t just be donated to rough sleepers, but to people doing it tough in the wider community as well,” she said.

“It’s what we call a Faith in Action initiative, so we want to make sure that what we’re talking about is being put into action.

“Donating a blanket may seem like a small thing, but it’s a big gesture for someone who doesn’t have a blanket or doesn’t have somewhere warm to sleep at night.”

The Outpost chair Amy Hunter said there were more people in need of blankets than ever before, and winter was an important time to ensure people had access to warmth and shelter.

“A blanket can be the difference between sleepless shivering and a semi-restful sleep,” she said. “People sleeping rough across our city are increasing due to a lack of affordable housing; this means many blankets are needed on our streets and for people just trying to keep warm.

“The Outpost applauds the blanket initiative and people in the community who are making a difference to each individual, as this blanket means so much more than material aid.”

Funds secured to continue helping those who help others

By Jena Carr The Outpost will receive three years of funding to further support people experiencing hardship, homelessness and social isolation across Greater Geelong.

City of Greater Geelong Council has committed a total of $165,000 to the service, which provides meals every night and three lunches a week to people in need.

The Outpost chair Amy Hunter said it was important for people to have a “place

of dignity, respect and connection” and that she welcomed the council’s support.

“Th is funding will allow The Outpost to keep the lights on and the doors open for our community’s vulnerable and in need 365 days per year,” she said.

“It also sends a clear message to people in the community doing it tough that they too are supported at a place that is designed for them.

“It means that we can continue to provide nutrition, dignity and a welcoming space for Geelong locals who may feel outcast,

overlooked or are unsure where their next meal is going to come from.”

Ms Hunter said she anticipated that demand for the organisation’s services would continue to increase and that The Outpost would remain open to meet this need.

“We open our doors to be part of the solution and to provide relief when it’s needed most,” she said.

“The Outpost has experienced a 50 per cent increase in demand for our services over the past two years and, over the

last 12 months, we have provided 76,893 meals and drinks.

“More women, children and senior citizens are now attending our service, with the age range also getting younger and extending into working professionals who are fi nding it a challenge to put a meal on the table.”

The Outpost will receive $55,000 each year through the council’s 2026-27 Budget to provide practical support and connection for people doing it tough across Greater Geelong.

Shaping the shire through feedback

Free forum addressing climate change A free community forum will help enhance climate emergency awareness and resilience across the Surf Coast Shire.

Geelong Sustainability and Surf Coast Environment Group will soon host a Community Climate Risk Forum to bring people together to explore the impacts of climate change.

Geelong Sustainability co-chief executive Karina Donkers said that climate change was “no longer a future challenge”.

“Th is Community Climate Risk Forum is an important opportunity to bring together knowledge, lived experience and local action to support the community,”

she said. “We know there is a strong appetite from the community to better understand these risks, have meaningful conversations and be part of shaping solutions.

“Communities across our region are already experiencing the impacts through increasing extreme weather events, environmental changes and growing uncertainty about what lies ahead.”

Surf Coast Environment Group founder Graeme Stockton said climate resilience could not be achieved by one organisation or sector alone.

“It requires collaboration, local knowledge and a community that feels

empowered to participate,” he said.

“Creating this space for conversations will help build understanding, strengthen connections and support a more prepared and resilient Surf Coast community.”

The forum received a $10,000 grant from Surf Coast Shire Council’s Climate Emergency Grants Program.

“Climate emergency is here and now, and we need to continue building community-wide response,” councillor Leon Walker said.

“We love to see organisations and individuals stepping up and leading the way in helping to further inform, inspire and empower our community.”

Surf Coast Shire community members can share their thoughts on decisions that affect them, as council reviews its Community Engagement Policy.

The draft policy is reviewed every four years, with community feedback encouraged on projects, policies and plans that impact the shire.

Mayor Libby Stapleton said the review aimed to make the policy clearer, easier to understand, and more user-friendly, while guiding how the council informs, consults, and engages with the community.

“We’re keen to hear whether people think this working draft is on the right track and whether it clearly reflects how they would like council to engage with the community,” she said. “Community engagement helps council draw on local knowledge, understand different perspectives and make better decisions for our community now and into the future.”

Cinematic cycling celebration returns for an eighth year One of Geelong’s favourite annual filmgoing experiences returns to local cinemas this August.

For the eighth year, global cinema festival the Big Bike Film Night will bring the best of films celebrating cycling to town, featuring nine short films curated by the festival’s founder Brett Cotter.

“Stories are at the heart of everything,” Mr Cotter said. “Audiences will be transported from gravel adventures in the South Island of New Zealand to the breathtaking landscapes of Norway, from the rolling Rwanda hills to the lush forests of the Canadian West Coast, and we’ll crown things off on the slopes of the punishing Mont Ventoux, in Southern France.”

reforest parts of New Zealand’s Queenstown Basin as she does so.

“Annie is known for combining extreme endurance challenges with environmental advocacy,” Mr Cotter said.

“This film not only showcases Annie’s grit and determination but also shows how using adventure as a tool can inspire others.

“The power of storytelling is at the forefront of what we offer, and the belief that the humble bicycle can help improve our health and inspire people with where it can take them.”

Bike park is now ready for a spin Bannockburn Bike Park is now open, offering families a new place to ride and connect with their community.

The $1.2 million park project began in February and was opened on 13 July, featuring three bike tracks, accessible pathways, street furniture and LED lighting.

Golden Plains Shire mayor Owen Sharkey said the park would “provide opportunities for everyone to build their confidence” while being active outdoors.

“The Bannockburn Bike Park is a welcoming and inclusive space that will benefit our growing community for many years to come,” he said. “(The park has) accessible pathways, seating and dedicated activation programs to encourage participation by people living with disability.

“Designed to cater for riders of all ages and abilities, the park features a beginner skills development track, an LED-lit asphalt pump track and an advanced jump line.”

The bike park will also benefit from additional seating and a shelter, which is scheduled to be installed soon.

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens said she was proud to see the new recreational community asset now open.

“The new bike park will ensure this venue will become a hub for young people and riders of all ages to enjoy their cycling,” she said.

“Bannockburn is home to a passionate and growing community of mountain bike and BMX riders, and they now have this great new bike track facility to enjoy.”

The park was supported with $950,000 from the state government’s Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and more than $300,000 from Golden Plains Shire.

Carrying the tradition forward Marcus Lee has spent the last five years learning the bagpipes and has been involved in many international events.

He speaks with Jena Carr about the instrument and what it’s like moving to Australia from Hong Kong.

agpipes can be a difficult instrument to learn, but Marcus Lee knows that the experience can also be very rewarding.

The 18-year-old now calls Curlewis home after moving to Australia from Hong Kong just over a month ago to attend university.

“The culture shift has been interesting as Hong Kong is very busy and everything is in close proximity as soon as you walk out of your home,” Marcus said.

“You can come down from an apartment, and then right downstairs there’s a supermarket, tons of food, shops, and a mall just a five-minute walk away.

“It’s very busy and very crazy with transportation, buses, minibuses, trains, and trams, so it’s a bit different to here, but I do enjoy it here as it’s peaceful and a lot more relaxed.

“The homes are also different, as Hong Kong homes are very small and horribly expensive, while Australian homes have more space.

“It is such a change to how busy life is in Hong Kong compared to here, but it was easier to buy and get stuff there compared to here, so there is good and bad with both, but I do like it here.”

Marcus’ love of bagpipes began in 2021 when he decided to learn a more active instrument than the cello, which he had been playing since he was six years old.

“When I was around 13, I found the cello a bit boring and decided to start learning the bagpipes as I love the history behind the instrument,” he said.

“As it was during COVID-19 at the time, the bagpipes were a bit harder to learn as 8 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 17 July, 2026

the ways to learn in Hong Kong are typically either through the scouts, uniform groups, or group lessons.

“Thankfully, I found a private tutor called Chris Lee (Hong Kong-based Scottish bagpipe performer and teacher), who’s a very good piper and very renowned internationally.

“Over the course of five years, I’ve performed at many places across Hong Kong, including some high-profi le events.”

Some of Marcus’ highlights include performing at the Annual Piping and Drumming Scholarship Receptions at the British Consulate General, and the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens’ 2024 sporting event.

He was also involved in a successful Guinness World Record attempt for the largest reed instrument ensemble in March this year, with musicians coming together to perform at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park.

“We had more than 1200 musicians from 30 cities around the world come along with their reed instruments, including bagpipes, so that was really cool,” he said.

Among his many achievements, Marcus holds a globally recognised qualification in Scottish Bagpipes from the Piping and Drumming Qualification Board.

“Bagpipes carry a lot of historical significance and it’s a very special and unique instrument,” he said.

“Not many teenagers or young people play the bagpipes, so it’s great to be able to carry the tradition forward.

“Bagpiping in Scotland is really competitive, and the level is very high.

defi nitely, in some cases, a bit lower and the community is a lot smaller.”

Marcus said he loved playing the bagpipes, but it required a lot of dedication and work.

“It does take quite a bit of time to start, so many people might give up or might not

have the determination to learn it,” he said.

“You don’t start with the full piece, but rather with a practice chanter (the melody pipe consisting of several fi nger-holes), which is almost like a recorder.

“You need to get the foundations to a good standard before you even try to play the whole instrument.

“Even then, it doesn’t mean you can play immediately, as you will need to learn every part of the instrument, including how to blow in the bag without even playing a single note.

“The beginning part is hard for many people, but when you get the hang of it, you start to learn more tunes and play better.

“It can take about a year and a half to play music on the instrument, not even to a good standard, and that’s a big hurdle which many people won’t want to face.

“But, I encourage anyone interested in the instrument to give it a go.”

During his time so far in Curlewis, Marcus has been practising his bagpipes with Geelong RSL and said it was a great way to connect with people.

“Everyone is very enthusiastic, and it’s a very happy and nice community that welcomes new learners,” he said.

“I’m planning to stay in Geelong for quite a while, so I’ll continue playing with the Geelong RSL for however long it may be.”

Marcus plans to apply for university soon and wants to one day be an English or history teacher, while continuing to play the bagpipes.

Dave Graney’s creative life ‘full of anguish and the blues’ Australian indie music legend Dave Graney has been something of an iconoclast since breaking onto the scene with post-punk band The Moodists in 1980.

Quirky, dramatic, with a unique sense of style, Graney has always been cool in a way that slyly laughed at the very idea of coolness being a thing.

Although both his persona and his music reject the idea of the mainstream, the mainstream itself has done its best to embrace him. He has won two ARIA music awards, been nominated for seven more and was inducted into the South Australian Music Hall of Fame in 2019.

But even as the world tries to regulate and control the music industry, Graney rejects the idea that music can be “respectable”.

“It’s more or less a criminal life, it always

has been,” he said.

“It’s a harsh world of people who are expressing things they can’t in any other way, and they sometimes express themselves violently. It’s full of anguish and the blues.

“And it’s not a place that bars misfits or people who can’t fit in; it is for them. You can’t make rules for it as if you’re working in an office, the music world is an unruly place.”

Over his career, Graney has released 25 studio albums, six live albums and three soundtracks, almost all of them alongside drummer Clare Moore, his partner in music and life.

The duo released their latest album, Laburnum of the Mind, in April this year, and have been touring it around the nation

with their band The mistLY. Full of groove and edge, tracks like My Esv (estimated street value) and Hits Are the Worst make clear the album’s flat rejection of modern trends and music’s current like-chasing culture.

“Music is dangerous to you…Why would you do it?” Graney said.

“It takes up a lot of your life, your time, your mind, and it makes you ignore important things, in relationships and family and everything.

“And you do it. Because it’s got other things, unknowable things that are very, very exciting and rewarding.”

Featuring brilliantly created, larger-than-life puppets and the instantly recognisable voices of Melanie Zanetti and Dave McCormack as Mum (Chilli) and Dad (Bandit), Bluey’s Big Play follows Bluey and Bingo’s plans to get Dad off his phone and out of the bean bag.

When master puppeteer Jacob Williams returned from the US to Australia in 2019 after a stint as head puppeteer for King Kong the Musical on Broadway, he had no idea who or what Bluey was.

“I got a phone call out of the blue from the producers asking if I’d be interested in coming on as puppet director,” Williams said. “I thought at that stage it might be a nice summer job for a couple of weeks…

That was seven years ago.”

Williams said a big part of Bluey’s magic was its representation of the universal experience of being part of a family.

“I think what Bluey does really well is fi nd the joy and the quirkiness in the ordinary experience of family life,” he said.

“One of the things that keeps me so engaged with the show, what always delights me, is the audience itself. It’s such a collective experience of joy, not just from the kids, but from all the adults.

“I’m a parent, and to see your child seeing one of their icons live, the impact of that… there’s such joy in that experience.”

Three of the best chamber musicians in the country come together for one very special concert.

Internationally acclaimed pianist Aura Go, award-winning bassoonist Matthew Kneale and Italian oboist Francesco Ciarmatori will perform a series of works for oboe, bassoon and piano at Sacred Heart College’s McAuley Hall on Friday 24 July.

From Beethoven’s lyrical Gassenhauer Trio to André Previn’s jazzy Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano, the Aura Go and Friends ensemble’s program explores and showcases the diverse chamber repertoire written for the double reed instruments.

Kneale, who conceived and convened the project, said despite having never performed together in this setting, the trio had already formed a great rapport.

“I work with Aura at Monash University…and she has this really fantastic collaborative process,” he said. “Her playing has a lyricism, a delicacy of line that she just naturally brings, and also a really in-depth knowledge and understanding of the pieces of music that she plays.

“And Francesco has got this wittiness and personality with his oboe playing, which really brings out the character of (Valerie Coleman’s) Trio Toccata and the Poulenc Trio, which really needs that vibrancy.”

Kneale said the ensemble hoped to take the audience on a journey full of energy and youthfulness.

“The whole point of the program is to show the different sides and personalities of the musicians and the instruments themselves, and showcase what music making and storytelling is all about.”

Get in the groove with vocal quartet The 60 Four Australia’s newest all-singing, all-dancing young stars have taken to the road with a new show.

Celebrating the music of classic artists such as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, The Bee Gees and Johnny O’Keefe, retro vocal quartet The 60 Four bring their world-class harmonies and slick dance moves back to Geelong this July.

Hailing from Adelaide, the four singers shared a love of singing and entertaining as they grew up together, according to the

group’s Lachlan Williams.

“We were all students at the same school…in a boys choir together and the vocal teacher the school brought in had just come off the Australian touring production of Jersey Boys,” Williams said.

“He handed us his songbook – Sherry, Walk Like A Man, Big Girls Don’t Cry, all those big hits.And after working on that for about a year at lunch times, an opportunity came up for us to perform at the Adelaide Theatre Guild Awards.

“So we ran out on stage, did our little

medley of Frankie Valli tunes in the jackets, did the dance moves. And when we got off stage, we had three job offers.”

Since then, the group has played cruise ship tours, performed on the Channel Seven Perth Telethon and toured Australia and the globe.

“It’s work, it is a job, but we are also four best buds who get to run around to New Zealand or Fiji or Japan…it’s so much fun,” Lachlan said. “The music is so timeless, it means so much to so many people, and it means so much to us as well.”

By Stretch Kontelj Every dollar spent at Geelong City Market generates more than 90 cents of additional spending at our local cafes, restaurants and retailers.

That’s based on an estimated $8.3 million boost to the local economy – including $4.3 million in direct spending and $4 million in indirect revenue – in seven months since the market’s launch last October.

Th is almost double-dollar boost is just one example of the market’s economic impact reaching well beyond its stallholders.

From 25 October 2025 to 30 May 2026, the market supported 43 local jobs and generated $2.5 million in wages and salaries, drawing between 5000 and 6500 visitors each Saturday to our city centre.

As an avid supporter of the market and a regular attendee, I’m not at all surprised by these results.

Each weekend, more than 44 stallholders create a vibrant, colourful and welcoming atmosphere that has quickly established the market as one of central Geelong’s most popular attractions for visitors and residents.

Enticing smells, fresh produce, artisan goods, live music and culinary workshops are all part of the appeal that transforms Little Malop Street Central into a must-visit destination.

Which is why council has again backed the market in its 2026-27 budget.

As we work to revitalise central Geelong, it’s critical we carefully target our support where it will have the most impact and bang for buck.

Jimny: it’s just not cricket

By Chris Riley, Marque Motoring It’s been more than five years since we last drove the ‘new’ Suzuki Jimny.

The scary thing is that not much has changed in this time – it’s still fundamentally the same.

It’s the same engine, the same transmission and the same four-wheel drive system.

There’s a new touchscreen and operating system, while auto cruise control and parking sensors have been added front and back.

And along the way, a cheaper, more accessible version of the little 4x4 was added to the mix – known simply as the Jimny Lite.

Styling Five years ago, a three-door Jimny was priced from $23,990. To get into the car now, it’s $31,990 and that is for the Lite version. The full-blown version is $33,990 for the manual or $36,490 for the automatic.

Five-door Jimny XL meanwhile is priced from $34,990, while the better equipped Heritage edition is $40,990 – all prices before on-road costs.

Any colour except white adds to the price, with Premium paint $745 and two-tone paintwork with a black roof is $1345. Lite is available only in Superior White or Jungle Green.

The bright green or perhaps yellow that everyone wants is called Kinetic Yellow and is available only in combination with a black roof.

Interestingly, it’s a very close match for the colour of Ryobi power tools.

There are seven colours to choose from, three of them two-tone combinations: Superior White, Jungle Green, Medium Gray, Chiffon Ivory Metallic/Bluish Black Pearl, Kinetic Yellow/Bluish Black Pearl, Brisk Blue Metallic/Bluish Black Pearl.

Our test vehicle was the three-door Jimny in top spec, fi nished in the black and yellow combo.

Cloth trim is standard across all grades, with a leather-clad steering wheel and single zone climate control for this grade.

Adaptive cruise control is also now standard on both three-doors, but only the auto version of the five-door gets it.

And you still start the car with a key.

There’s also LED headlights, auto high beam, traffic sign recognition, front fog lights, daytime running Lights (DRLs), privacy glass and 15-inch alloys with skinny 195/80 tyres.

Jimny is covered by a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, with roadside assistance for five years.

Infotainment The big story, if you can call it that, is the upgrade to the infotainment system.

A 9.0-inch screen (7.0-inch for Lite) now heads up the system, with Bluetooth, voice control, AM/FM and now DAB+ digital radio, plus wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, with sound delivered via an ancient two-speaker audio system.

Built-in navigation, once standard, is missing in action. There’s a single USB-A port and a 12-volt outlet in the front, with another 12-volt outlet for the luggage area.

Safety Safety comprises six airbags and autonomous emergency braking which uses a camera and a laser sensor to scan the road ahead for traffic and/or pedestrians.

You also get lane departure warning, weaving assist to fight fatigue, plus automatic, traffic-sensing high beam.

Despite all this, Jimny scores only three of a possible five stars for safety.

Engines/transmissions At the business end, a 1.5-litre, four cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine delivers a stingy 75kW of power and 130Nm of torque – the latter at 4000 revs.

The 1.5 is available with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, with lockout overdrive that prevents the auto from changing into top gear – sort of a sport mode.

Driving It’s a cutie, that’s for sure – but looks aren’t everything.

A part-time four-wheel drive system, featuring high and low range gearing, is engaged via a second stubby transfer lever located at the rear of the main one.

Th is can be accomplished on the move for high range, which is permissible on wet roads, but the change to low range for the rough stuff requires a stop and shift to Park before it can be engaged.

The rest of the time the car remains rear-wheel drive.

As well as hill hold and hill descent control, the 4x4 system also boasts what’s known as Brake LSD Traction Control.

Basically, it means that if two diagonally opposed wheels lose their grip in slippery conditions, it will automatically brake the slipping wheels and redistribute torque to the other two.

With a tiny 40-litre tank, it takes standard 91 unleaded, with fuel consumption rated at 6.4L/100km for the manual or 6.9L/100km for the auto.

It’s a stubby thing, at 3.64 metres in length, with a 2250mm wheelbase.

But Jimny still accommodates four people, although the two rear seats are child-sized with little leg room and very little room remaining for luggage.

nor cupholders or storage bins – just the one seat pocket on the passenger side.

The body is bolted to a separate ladder chassis, as preferred by the 4x4 set, with a spare wheel that sits on the tailgate.

It opens from left to right in keeping with right hand drive needs, but it can be heavy to manoeuvre, particularly if parked on a slope.

With the rear seats laid flat, storage is a thousand times better, but the hard plastic surface is extremely slippery and items slide around.

Suspension is three-link rigid axles front and back with shocks and coil springs, and it rides on 15-inch wheels with 195/80 series Dunlop AT20 rubber.

With a creditable 210mm of ground clearance and short front and rear overhangs, it has an approach angle of 37 degrees, ramp over angle of 28 degrees and departure angle of 49 degrees.

But no figure is provided for its water crossing capability, although we understand the figure to be 300mm.

Getting into the car requires a step up and in, with a door-lip the same as a Jeep to prevent the entry of water.

The driver’s seat adjusts backwards and forwards, but there’s no height adjustment and the steering wheel moves only up and down.

Jimny is started with the twist of a key, just like cars all used to be in the old days.

With a small four-cylinder engine, it needs some revs to get going, with maximum torque not available until 4000 rpm.

The electric steering is interesting, as it is possible to move the wheel from side to side without actually generating any kind of response.

The auto, with only four gears, could do with an update, but of course there’s only so much room to fit a larger transmission.

Despite this, it works reasonably well around town and is probably the pick because it doesn’t use much more fuel.

No test of the Jimny would be complete without taking it off road.

Changing in and out of high range four-wheel drive is simple and the suspension and ground clearance are adequate.

Engaging low range requires a stop and the transmission moved to Park.

Th is is a vehicle that has little trouble scaling rocks and rock shelves, but seems to have an aversion to mud and water.

Embarrassingly, we got it bogged and it was time to dial a friend…

Jimny’s small size allows it to squeeze easily in and out of tight situations, but don’t expect too much from the car and you won’t wind up disappointed.

Get to know it, get to know what it can and can’t do, and it won’t let you down.

However, for full-on four-wheel driving, we’d suggest chunkier rubber and a lift kit – the skinny tyres don’t do the car justice.

In terms of fuel consumption, we were getting 7.8L/100km after 330km, including some hard four-wheel driving.

That’s a bit disappointing considering the diminutive size of the vehicle and its small engine.

Summing up Adventure seekers will be drawn to the Jimny because of its rugged looks and the promise of off-road ability.

Sadly, few if any buyers will actually take the vehicle off road and with a cramped cabin, it is likely to quickly lose its attraction.

For those who just want something to drive around town, a more conventional vehicle will be more practical and certainly more comfortable.

A pathway forward

By Justin Flynn Lara must have 45 registered footballers, a fully appointed coaching panel and an elected committee by 1 October if it is to return to seniors and reserves competition in the Geelong Football Netball League next season.

The guidelines were established by the Lara Future Planning Group (LFPG), which was commissioned

by Lara Sporting Club (LSC) after the club withdrew its seniors and reserves football teams and A Grade netball side from competition this season due to a lack of numbers.

The FPG spent four months diagnosing the causes of the instability that led to the recess, to develop a realistic model for returning to senior football and A Grade netball, and to recommend the structural, cultural and operational changes needed to support the club’s long-term success.

The panel was headed by former Football Geelong chief executive Phil

Clohesy and included AFL Barwon chief executive Kate Patterson, head of football Sarah Naylor, former AFL regional manager Bruce Petering, and LSC’s Shana Miatke (netball), Mark Guthrie (senior football) and Jason Hewitt (junior football).

Among the FPG’s findings were that 85 per cent of club member survey respondents said the club had no clear or visible mission; 74 per cent said player recruitment failed to target the required standard; 70 per cent believed the club should move to another league and then return to the GFNL within two years; 65 per cent said football leadership was ineffective or very poor; and 61 per cent were dissatisfied with the club overall.

However, despite its two senior men’s football teams and A Grade netball side going into recess, the club retained 83 per cent of its sponsors with the report stating the combined football and netball annual turnover sits within the AFL Barwon Club median range of $640,000

to $680,000. It said the club had a “higher than average level of accumulated funds and are in a sound financial position”.

Lara Sporting Club chair Lou Goodwin said the club was firmly committed to re-establishing itself as a key part of the community.

“On behalf of the board, I want to sincerely thank the Future Planning Group for the time, honesty and rigour they have brought to this report,” she said.

“It hasn’t always made for easy reading, but it has given our club a clear and credible path forward. Lara has always been a club built by volunteers, rebuilding it will take that same spirit again.

“If you love this club and what it can mean for our community, now is the time to step forward. Together, we will reestablish Lara Football & Netball Club as a key driver of sport in this community, for our kids, for our families, and for generations still to come.”

YMCA Geelong gymnasts do region proud All 13 YMCA Geelong Gymnastics athletes achieved a podium result at the Australian National Gymnastics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

The campaign included three individual apparatus championships, numerous silver and bronze medals, and Victorian team medals across Levels 8, 9 and 10 and the Developing International division.

In the Developing International division, Olivia Meaney produced an exceptional championship campaign, finishing second all-around nationally and was crowned Australian Vault Champion, placed second on bars, third on beam and second on floor.

Alyssa Rantino finished eighth allaround, won silver on vault and placed fourth on beam and was part of the Victorian silver medal team.

In the Future International division, Lucy Riddle finished second all-around and was crowned Australian Floor Champion, while also placing second on bars and third on beam.

Issy McDermott finished seventh allaround and won silver on vault.

At Level 10, Isobel Vagg finished second all-around, was crowned Australian Bars Champion and won gold with the Victorian Level 10 team.

Vivian Bayles claimed silver medal on floor, while Mia Fewster was crowned Australian Floor Champion.

Twelve locals named in Victorian longboard team Twelve greater Geelong surfers have been chosen to represent Victoria at the 2026 Australian Longboard Titles at Tweed Heads from 24 to 30 July.

Moolap teams big players in Section 2 LOCAL TENNIS Donna Schoenmaekers It was Black versus White for Moolap in 2 Open and sixth-placed Black gave third-placed White a run for their money.

Sam Shappard and Sophie De Wit opened White’s account with a win while Fletcher Allen, after a slow start, put Black on the board, getting over Brad Canny 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.

Sheppard continued his good form, winning the second singles 6-1, 6-3, while Allen and Canny resumed their lengthy battle in the doubles with Allen and partner Les Phillips prevailing in a super tie-break, in a come from behind win 3-6, 6-1, 11-9.

Hamlyn Park, sitting in third, also travelled to Moolap this week, to face Moolap’s Yellow team which has struggled this season, currently sitting in eighth.

Despite the difference in ladder positions, Yellow made Hamlyn Park earn their win, and improved on their previous meeting. Axel Potter-Ayres and Riley Kotwic battled it out in the first singles with Potter-Ayres getting up 6-4, 6-4, while Kyle Beattie and Lucas Nesci got up for Moolap in the doubles 6-3, 6-3. Beattie fought hard in the first set but Xavier Willoughby proved too good, winning 7-5, 6-2 for the Park.

Potter-Ayres teamed with Roy Savage in the second doubles to get up 6-2, 6-3 to finish off their win three rubbers to one.

Ocean Grove upset ladder leaders Wandana Heights and pushed into sixth and only 4.5 points out of fourth with their 3-1 win.

The first singles was an epic battle between Jensen Wong and Flynn Stewart, with Wong the eventual victor 7-5, 5-7, 10-5 for Wandana.

Austin and Caide King enjoyed their day out, teaming up in the first doubles for a 6-4, 6-3 win, before Caide prevailed in a tough match against Alric Wong 7-5, 6-3.

Austin then teamed up with Steward to get up 6-4, 6-4. The loss put Wandana back to second, continuing their seesawing battle with Clifton Springs.

Clifton Springs hosted fifth placed Grovedale in the final match of the day, with the away team managing the tightest of wins.

While the final result was incredibly close, the individual matches proved one-sided on the scoreline, and showed the importance of strength in both singles and doubles Greg Luke proved too strong for Ella Hill winning 6-0, 6-0, while brothers Andre and Beau Attard accounted for father/son combination Troy and Remi Caincross 6-0, 6-1.

Andre Attard mirrored his score in the second singles getting over Jarrod Caincross while Troy partnered with Luke to post a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 win, but the team fell short. Despite that, they crept ahead of Wandana to regain top spot.

Next week will see Clifton Springs take on Moolap White and Wandana facing Moolap Yellow, so there is the potential for Wandana to regain top spot, and the battle for the minor premiership continue.

Drama as Cougars make finals

By Justin Flynn Geelong Cougars have made the Victorian Netball League finals in the most extraordinary of circumstances, coming from 10th with two rounds remaining to finish 6th after a dramatic final round on Wednesday 15 July.

The Cougars needed to beat Wilson Storage Saints and hope Gippsland Stars, Melbourne University Lightning and Peninsula Waves lose to make the finals.

The Falcons did their job against the Waves in the early game, and then, after a slowish start, Geelong beat the Saints by five goals while the other two results were happening simultaneously at the State Netball Centre in Parkville.

Casey Demons knocked the Lightning out of the race, leaving North East Blaze to beat the Stars for Geelong to make finals, which they did, 61 to 48.

In just one round, the Cougars jumped three rungs on the ladder to finish 6th and qualify for the finals.

Last Sunday, Geelong defeated Western Warriors at the Arena in North Geelong in the penultimate round to keep the finals dream alive.

Captain Ally O’Connor, who made her Super Netball debut this season, said the large home crowd helped her side get over the line.

“One thousand per cent (it did),” she said.

“I definitely think the crowd helped us this time around. I think it is something very special when you get to represent your own little town.

“And I suppose Cougars is one of two regional teams in the VNL. You do have

a lot more pride when you are in front of your own home town and you are representing that because there’s so many netballers in Geelong.

“It’s also a great opportunity for young GNL or BNL players to come watch and see what the pathway is and what they can strive for.”

Even though O’Connor, 26, is from Warrnambool, she said the local players embraced the occasion.

“I think for them, it was quite surreal,” she said.

“I’m not sure how many of them have

played in front of such a huge crowd and with the lights and everything like that. It made it quite fun and enjoyable for everyone. I think it’s been such an incredible season. “(Coach) Mel (Savage) has been such an instrumental piece of this puzzle. She’s really drummed down on culture. She’s obviously been by Jez’s (now Melbourne Mavericks coach Gerard Murphy) side for so many years and finally got to take the reins.

“She really has honed in our culture, and I think that has spoken for itself - (we) play for each other when we do get to go

out there. And when we’re playing well, we’re playing well because we’re having fun and we’re doing it for one another.”

O’Connor said there had been some promising players who have debuted in the Championship side this season.

“Kiahna (Fallon) might be our youngest and she’s just so receptive,” she said.

“She’s so open to feedback. She wants to put her best foot forward and such a credit to her because she’s come so far.

“We’ve also had some awesome Under 23s come up as well and get their time to shine. And that entire 23s team could come up.

“Lulu (Louise Shaw), Mimi (Lockwood) - we had Mon (Monique Parker) for the first couple of weeks. Keeley (Smith), Mia (Aitken) - half the team have been able to come up and they don’t look out of place when they get on court.”

Young gun Indya Forde’s form was rewarded with a spot in the Australian Pathway team to tour Samoa next month.

“People are finally seeing the netballer she is,” O’Connor said.

“I don’t know if she necessarily has got the accolades before, as she has now, but I’m glad they’re coming because she’s someone to look out for, that’s for sure.”

Geelong Cougars Under 23s defeated Wilson Storage Saints by 15 goals to end the home and away season as minor premiers.

Needing to win to guarantee a top two finish, the young Cougars were rarely threatened.

Had they lost, Geelong would have finished third, but there was no slip up and a well-earned double chance awaits when finals begin next week.

Big month ahead for Bell Park without key playmaker

By Justin Flynn Bell Park will have to negotiate a tough four-week block without gun forward Jack Sarcevic.

The in-form Dragons are sitting in fourth spot on the Geelong Football League ladder and face a huge match-up against Colac this Saturday at Hamlyn Park.

However, Sarcevic will miss the next four games, which also includes St Mary’s, Leopold and Newtown & Chilwell, as he enjoys the warmth of a European holiday.

After a gritty first quarter from North Shore, Bell Park had no problems in pulling away with a 12-goal second term to win by 174 points at Windsor Park on Saturday 11 July.

That allowed coach James Saker to experiment a bit with Tom Pearson booting six goals and Sarcevic four.

“Jack’s going away this week - he’s away for the next month so we sort of played him in a few different roles to give ourselves a bit of a look at things without him being there,” Saker said.

“He played on the wing in the last quarter and it went really well.”

Pearson had kicked one goal this season going into the match and will no doubt find himself up forward in Sarcevic’s absence.

“Tom’s probably had opportunities to kick threes and fours in the past, but yesterday he got his kicking boots on and nailed a few,” Saker said. “(He) probably could have had a couple more. He’s a really difficult match up and he’s one guy that we’ve been able to put a bit of time into and he’s just really blossomed in the last couple of years.

“He’s had his issues with injury and concussion and whatnot but when he’s up

and going he plays a really good role and it was just nice yesterday (that) he was able to cash in. He’s normally the guy creating the goals and yesterday he kicked a few.”

With a similar percentage and just a game behind the Dragons, Colac also faces a tough run home, making this week’s clash the epitome of an eight-point game.

After Bell Park, the Tigers meet Leopold, South Barwon, St Albans, St Joseph’s and St Mary’s.

“What we’ve been trying to tell our boys is we think our best footy’s going to stack up against anyone and the challenge is for us to have the right attitude each week,”

Saker said.

“We’ve got six games left (and) we know we’re going to have to win our fair share of those. It’s a great opportunity to put two games between you and them (Colac) in sixth.

“I would assume you’re probably going to have to win 12 or 13 games to play finals again, like last year. So it makes all of these games really important.

“We’re just pleased to have put ourselves in a position to be playing in these big games, as opposed to, after a loss against Colac (in round 9), I think we were four and four and staring down the barrel.

“The guys are in a good vein of form. (It was) nice to get some confidence on Saturday and then we know we’ve got a big block ahead and I’m keen to bring that on against Colac this week.”

NEWTOWN & Chilwell received an almighty fright from Geelong West Giants before eventually winning by four goals.

With Chris Browne stepping down as coach during the week, the Giants lifted for interim coach Nathan Storer and led by 29 points at half-time. But with Liam Nash (three goals) best afield, the Eagles steadied to remain in second place.

BROTHERS Sam and Hamish Bourke led St Mary’s to a 17-point win against South Barwon. It was a solid response after St Mary’s shock loss to Leopold in round 12 while the Swans’ grip on a topthree finish loosened a little.

LEOPOLD’S 70-point win against St Albans kept it in the finals hunt with midfielder Marcus Thompson (three goals) again leading the way.

COLAC made a statement in what was a genuine danger game against Grovedale. The Tigers’ 64-point win was led by reliable mid Kody Spokes while key tall Joe McCarthy continued his excellent season for Grovedale.
