Remarkable year 2025 was a remarkable year filled with achievements and accomplishments but also a fair share of trials, tribulations and challenges. The year started with one of the most significant bushfire events in the region for many years, as 40 hectares burned in Montrose at the beginning of autumn. Stories of the community pushing for better in their townships, of fundraising and supporting others, of respect and of frustration were told throughout the year. Interesting people who had decades of memories, stories and events to share were able to tell parts of their fascinating tales, forever documenting their lives in print. Talented actors were awarded, new and exciting exhibitions opened, and art gave a pathway for change to be made. Sporting achievements were garnered from all
codes and divisions, seeing talented young people put their skills on show. Over six weeks, the Star Mail’s CCTV campaign delved into the details of the public security camera network that had fallen into disrepair in the region in order to explore whether it could possibly be restored. Another opportunity for the Star Mail arose through a grant from the Walkley Solutions Journalism Fund, to put together a project over five months examining how communities across the Yarra Ranges strengthened their resilience to bushfires. And of course, no story would be complete without a picture worth a thousand words alongside it, and there was certainly no shortage of stellar snaps in 2025 to admire. Join the Star Mail as we look back at the year that was through the lens of the news, starting on page 7.
