Remarkable year 2025 was a remarkable year filled with achievements and accomplishments but also a fair share of trials, tribulations and challenges.

The year started with one of the most significant bushfire events in the region for many years, as 40 hectares burned in Montrose at the beginning of autumn.

Stories of the community pushing for better in their townships, of fundraising and supporting others, of respect and of frustration were told throughout the year.

Interesting people who had decades of memories, stories and events to share were able to tell parts of their fascinating tales, forever documenting their lives in print.

Talented actors were awarded, new and exciting exhibitions opened, and art gave a pathway for change to be made.

Sporting achievements were garnered from all

codes and divisions, seeing talented young people put their skills on show.

Over six weeks, the Star Mail’s CCTV campaign delved into the details of the public security camera network that had fallen into disrepair in the region in order to explore whether it could possibly be restored.

Another opportunity for the Star Mail arose through a grant from the Walkley Solutions Journalism Fund, to put together a project over five months examining how communities across the Yarra Ranges strengthened their resilience to bushfires.

And of course, no story would be complete without a picture worth a thousand words alongside it, and there was certainly no shortage of stellar snaps in 2025 to admire.

Crime up across the board for region The Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) released the Victorian recorded crime statistics for the year ending 30 September 2025 last month.

Here’s a breakdown of the latest statistics for the Outer East region: In the Yarra Ranges, criminal incidents were up 8.5 per cent on the previous year (5841 from 5383), with 32.9 per cent having charges laid, 21.9 per cent yet to have charges laid and 45.2 per cent unsolved.

Lilydale (1159 incidents, up from 1088), Mooroolbark (818 up from 687), Chirnside Park (667 up from 591), Kilsyth (437 down from 438) and Healesville (336 up from 315) were the crime hotspots.

Theft from a motor vehicle (602 incidents), breaching a family violence order (582), theft from a retail store (507), criminal damage (493) and other theft (475) were the most common offences.

In Knox, criminal incidents were up 6.8 per cent on the previous year (8311 from 7779), with 30.2 per cent having charges laid, 16.1 per cent yet to have charges laid and 53.7 per cent unsolved.

Wantirna South (1519 incidents, up from 1353), Boronia (81439 up from 1252), Ferntree Gully (1327 up from 1281), Rowville (1173 down from 1202) and Bayswater (904 up from 852) were the crime hotspots.

In Maroondah, criminal incidents were up 9.2 per cent on the previous year (6752 from 6182), with 33 per cent having charges laid, 16.2 per cent yet to have charges laid and 50.8 per cent

unsolved.

Ringwood (2940 incidents, up from 2799), Croydon (1480 up from 1309), Bayswater North (692 up from 594), Ringwood East (534 up from 508) and Heathmont (322 up from 259) were the crime hotspots.

Theft from a motor vehicle (1027 incidents), theft from a retail store (618), other theft (577), breaching bail conditions (512) and criminal damage (416) were the most common offences.

In Cardinia, criminal incidents were up 20.1 per cent on the previous year (7067 from 5886), with 30.2 per cent having charges laid, 16.5 per cent yet to have charges laid and 53.3 per cent unsolved.

Pakenham (3884 incidents, up from 3387), Officer (1213 up from 919), Beaconsfield (522 up from 258), Koo Wee Rup (226 up from 200) and Emerald (178 up from 153) were the crime hotspots.

Theft from a motor vehicle (61156 incidents), other theft (643), breaching a family violence order (631), criminal damage (529) and motor vehicle theft (373) were the most common offences.

Statewide, the rate of recorded offences increased, up 9.0 per cent to 9030.2 per 100,000 Victorians in the last 12 months, while the number of offences increased 10.8 per cent to 640,860.

Over 15,000 offences detected during Operation Roadwise across state More than 15,300 traffic offences have been detected during a 15-day road policing operation over the Christmas and New Year period.

Operation Roadwise, which ran from 18 December to 1 January, saw police highly visible and enforcing across the state’s roads, in an effort to reduce road trauma over the high-risk period.

There was a significant focus on impaired drivers, with 328,164 preliminary breath tests and 9,035 roadside drug tests conducted during the operation.

The total 15,316 traffic offences detected during Operation Roadwise includes 6820 speeding offences, 1131 disqualified/suspended and unlicenced drivers, 513 mobile phone offences, 835 disobeying signs/signals, 221 seatbelt offences, 659 drink driving offences, 434 drug driving offences, 279 vehicle impoundments and 1422 unregistered vehicles There were seven lives lost on Victorian roads during the operational period (18 De-

cember – 1 January).

Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said while the majority of road users have behaved responsibly on the roads over the Christmas and New Year period, the fact they’ve detected more than 15,300 offences in 15 days is unacceptable.

“We’ve seen people making deliberate and conscious decisions that significantly increases the likelihood of road trauma, putting themselves and other road users at risk,” he said.

“You might be in a hurry to reach your destination, but the reality is, you’d rather arrive five or ten minutes later than not at all - it’s simply not worth the risk.

“Similarly, those who think they can risk getting behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs and not get caught are kidding themselves.

With many Victorians expected to take extended holidays over the January period, police are warning motorists not to be complacent on

the roads in the New Year.

Police will continue to have a major presence across Victoria’s road network, with a particular focus on busy holiday hotspots around the coast and throughout regional Victoria.

Motorists are being warned to be patient and allow extra travel time, as well as maintaining a safe braking distance and being cautious when overtaking, particularly around vehicles towing caravans and heavy vehicles.

Police will also continue to conduct widespread roadside alcohol and drug testing during the summer months, with motorists warned to expect to be tested anywhere, anytime.

Asst Commr Weir said they will continue to have a major focus on impaired drivers in 2026, so expect to be tested and face the consequences when you’re caught.

“We make no apologies for this,” he said.

“Expect to see a continued police presence on the roads during the summer months as we do all we can to reduce road trauma.”

Heatwave imminent A heatwave warning has been released by the Bureau of Meteorology this week, kicking off summer with a bang, with an expected high of 41°C on Wednesday.

The severe heatwave warning was issued for the North East and East Gippsland, with a prolonged period of heat forecast to build over Victoria this week, increasing in temperature as the week progresses.

Heatwaves and individual days of extreme heat can be very dangerous, especially for those more at-risk populations, including people aged 65 years and over, babies and young children, and those with certain medical conditions.

In preparation for the forecast heat, the Victorian Department of Health recommend taking precautions to stay safe.

Stay Cool and Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and use air conditioning or fans.

Consider visiting an air-conditioned public space like a shopping centre or library.

Stay Indoors: Remain inside or in the shade during the hottest parts of the day.

Check on Others: Look out for elderly neighbours, family, and friends who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Recognise Symptoms: Be aware of heat illness signs like dizziness, cramps, nausea, or fainting.

For official warnings and the most up-todate information, monitor the Bureau of Meteorology website or the VicEmergency site.

In an emergency, always phone Triple Zero (000).

Speedy New Year drivers caught Several drivers have already been pulled over by the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol in early January.

Friday 2 January, saw a 20-year-old male detected speeding at 130 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Stud Road in Rowville.

He was issued with a $1,018 penalty notice and he will be disqualified from driving for 12 months.

In Mount Evelyn, an 18-year-old male probationary driver was detected speeding at 104 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Police reported that he had only been licensed for two weeks.

The teen was issued with an $865 penalty notice and his licence will be suspended for six months.

In Basin-Olinda Rd, Olinda, a 38-year-old male driver returned a positive Preliminary Breath Test (PBT) for alcohol, then later blew a Evidentiary Breath Test (EBT) result of 0.133.

His licence was immediately suspended for 12 months, and he was issued with an $865 penalty notice.

Shopping centre blitz A 15-year-old carrying a hunting knife, two men fighting with a hammer and a couple who stole clothing worth hundreds of dollars are among more than 100 arrests in the first three weeks of a shopping centre safety clampdown.

Operation Pulse, which began on 8 December, sees police team up with protective services officers to patrol busy metropolitan centres over summer.

Four shopping centres – Northland, Highpoint, Eastland and Fountain Gate - have been initially selected.

Guilty plea, more charges

By Oliver Winn An ex-hotel manager at the Alpine Hotel supplied a teen with alcohol before sexually assaulting her, the County Court has heard.

35-year-old James Stewart pleaded guilty in the County Court to an additional charge of supplying liquor to a minor, sexual penetration of a child and common assault.

Husband and father Mr Stewart appeared at a plea hearing on 16 December where the victim impact statement was read to the court.

“This didn’t just affect my life, it changed everything about me,” the victim said in her impact statement.

“I could spend hours speaking about the emotional, physical and financial pain this has caused.”

Court documents show Mr Stewart invited a 17-year-old to his room in the early morning of 26 November 2023, where he prepared alcoholic beverages and asked her to sit next to him.

The 17-year-old told Mr Stewart, “I don’t want to do this” and he replied, “You’ll let me do this”.

The victim impact statement detailed how the 17-year-old’s mental health has declined severely since the crime.

“I couldn’t get any sleep without seeing him in my nightmares,” the victim’s impact statement read.

Alpine Hotel owner Rachael Northwood described Mr Stewart prior to the offending as “my number one guy in the business and the most senior person”.

She confirmed he was dismissed the day after the offending.

The victim’s impact statement included references to the 17-year-old’s history which wasn’t available during the initial sentence indication hearing Judge Paul Higham said the nature of this additional information could potentially be an “aggravating factor” to the hearing.

Forensic psychologist Pamela Matthews assessed Mr Stewart and claimed he reached criteria for a formal diagnosis of borderline personal-

ity disorder.

Her conclusion was based on Mr Stewart’s results from two personality tests and her “intuition”, as he had come across as “quite odd” during her assessment.

But the test results revealed Mr Stewart’s per-

sonality traits fell well below the clinically significant threshold for borderline personality disorder.

Mr Stewart will reappear in court for a directions hearing on 19 February.

Residents reminded not to put batteries in bins An important notice reminding Yarra Ranges residents to not put batteries and other hazardous items in their bins went out on 17 December.

On Monday 15 December, a fire occurred in a recycling truck during collections in the Kilsyth area.

When a “hot load” happens, drivers must act quickly to find a safe location to unload so the fire can be safely extinguished.

Thank you to the local CFA brigades who responded at Pinks Reserve, and to the crews who supported the clean-up afterwards.

This was the second hot load in the past four weeks, and the fifth so far in 2025.

These fires are commonly caused by hazardous items, particularly batteries being placed in bins, where they can ignite inside collection trucks. These incidents put lives at risk and result in significant clean-up and vehicle repair costs.

For the safety of our drivers, our community and our environment, please don’t place batteries, e-waste, gas canisters or chemicals in your bins.

Forced shutdown of Lilydale public toilets Public toilets on Main Street, Lilydale, will close for the foreseeable future after vandals caused further damage.

Months of repeated vandalism attacks have left the community facility unserviceable, with the latest incident occurring over the weekend of 13 and 14 December.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Richard Higgins said vandals and anti-social behaviour have long targeted the toilets.

“Unfortunately, vandals have damaged the facility yet again, and in the interests of public safety, we have no choice but to close it while we consider other options,” Cr Higgins said.

“It’s incredibly disappointing. These senseless acts of vandalism have destroyed an important community facility, costing ratepayers tens of thousands of dollars.”

“We will continue working with other agencies to prevent escalating anti-social behaviour at these sites, which may include installing security cameras.”

Pilots reach destination

By Mikayla van Loon Well, they did it, all 2518 kilometres from inland Victoria to the coast of far north Queensland within the hours of dawn and dusk.

Pilots Theresa MacDonald, Amanda Deed, and Delia Jones, accompanied by comedian Sammy J, jetted off from Lilydale Airport on Monday 8 December headed for Karumba, in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Following the famed Burke and Wills trail by air through the central parts of New South Wales and outback Queensland, it was a test of navigational and flight skills.

The team, named Ships of the Desert, factored in several contingency plans given the differences in climate, especially the unpredictability of the northern Queensland monsoon season.

“We’re now heading into the wet season. So ideally, in the wet season, you want to fly in the morning, but because we’re starting off down here, we won’t get there until the afternoon,” Theresa said.

“We’ve got contingency plans in case. If we don’t make it up there in a day, then we’ll probably get there the second day, and we’ll do it in reverse. That’s plan B.” But those plans were not required, reaching their final destination within the day.

“It all went to plan and we made it to Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria last Monday (8 Dec). Tired, exhausted, but jubilant,” Theresa said.

“We split the trip on the return journey as it was 44 degrees in Birdsville! We hung out in the air conditioning and left at 6am for the final flight via Broken Hill back to Lilydale.”

The flight was part of the International Dawn to Dusk Competition, but a hugely important aspect for these women when doing these flight challenges is fundraising for a cause.

Comedian Sammy J and pilots Theresa MacDonald, Amanda Deed, and Delia Jones arrived successfully in Karumba at dusk.

Because of the large outback expanse the team flew over, they chose Outback Futures as their charity.

Outback Futures supports the mental health and wellbeing of children, young people, adults, families, and entire communities living and working in rural and remote locations, where support services are few and far between.

Amanda said the impact of the floods in Queensland and the everyday challenges of living rurally, like the isolation from larger townships, helped set the original target of $10,000 for Outback Futures.

The target was then increased to $15,000, which by the end of their campaign, the team reached a total of $15,294.

Puffing Billy celebrates

By Corey Everitt The Dandenong Ranges’ nationally iconic Puffing Billy Railway has marked 125 years of choo-choo through the hills.

Starting as a working line and now a cornerstone of Victoria’s tourism industry, Sunday 14 December saw steam puffing from Belgrave to Gembrook in celebration of 125 years of the railway.

A special community open day was held for the first time, providing complimentary services for hills residents to honour the rich history of the railway that was kept alive by locals.

“Celebrating 125 years of Puffing Billy Railway is more than marking a milestone; it’s about honouring the deep and lasting connection we share with our local community,” Puffing Billy Railway CEO Stefanie Straub said.

“Puffing Billy has always been more than a train; it’s a living part of our region’s story. As we look to the future, our vision is to create a connected heritage corridor where vibrant villages and iconic rail history inspire wonder, discovery and authentic local experiences, celebrating community, culture and nature.

way of saying thank you to the people who continue to support and inspire us, and of reaffirming our commitment to a railway that belongs to everyone.”

Originally launched on 18 December 1900, Puffing Billy is a treasured remnant of a more leisurely era.

Built to carry goods and passengers through the Dandenong Ranges, the historic railway was

a vital lifeline for the region.

The line, which ran between Upper Ferntree Gully and Gembrook, faced numerous challenges. By the early 1930s, it had become a financial burden for Victorian Railways, and following a major landslide in 1953, the decision was made to close the line in 1954.

However, a series of farewell trips in 1955 sparked public interest and community efforts

that eventually led to the line’s revival.

Tourist services resumed in 1962 between Belgrave and Menzies Creek, with extensions to Emerald in 1965, Lakeside in 1975 and finally Gembrook in 1998.

Since its reopening, more than 11 million passengers have experienced the magic of Puffing Billy.

Centre in the lead up to Christmas. Many locals far and wide were able to keep up their Christmas tradition in getting a family photo with ‘The Real Santa’ who they had grown to love.

The unlikely tandem tallied upwards of $30,000 from their family Christmas photos and then selected four charities to each receive

$8400 to help make the lives of children better.

The four recipients of the funds included: Backpacks 4 Vic Kids, A Better Life For Foster Kids, HeartKids and Chum Creek’s Good Life Farm. The organisations shared how the funds had already been put to good use.

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids CEO and founder Sally Beard told Star Mail the donation came as a “delightful surprise”.

“We’re very, very grateful on behalf of the children, whose lives that it will impact,” she said. “We have absolutely put that money to good use.”

Ms Beard shared that the $8400 donation from Branded is aiding 112 children in need with care packs filled with toiletries, spare changes of clothes, a toy and more.

An event that defined 2025 It was an unusually warm day in March that marred the start of autumn for Montrose.

Saturday 15 March just before 2pm, firefighters were called to a bushfire. The initial response saw over 20 ground crews supported from the air.

A CFA spokesperson said fire crews responded to reports of a smoke column at around 1.43pm near Sheffield Road in Montrose.

“26 CFA units from multiple local brigades responded alongside FRV, Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria,” they said.

“Upon arrival, crews found an active grass and scrub fire in the Dr Ken Leversha Reserve and immediately began suppression efforts.”

With firefighters attacking from all directions, CFA Incident Controller Bernard Barbetti told the ABC, “We thought we had the fire under control but it moved the fire north.”

An unexpected burst of wind caused the fire to double in size, with the final impact burning 40 hectares, damaging two houses and rendering one lost.

At 12.51am on Sunday, the situation became dire, with an emergency take shelter now warning issued, making it too late to leave.

“There is increased fire activity on the western side, near Jeanette Maree Court, and on the eastern side, near Ruby Road. There is also (a) significant ember attack on the northern edge,” the warning read.

“This fire is threatening homes and lives. It is too late to leave the area safely so you must take shelter now. You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive.”

One Crestview Close resident described the moment they realised they needed to get their family out of the house: “It was raining embers.”

“I’m seeing embers flying through the air, they’re red. It’s not ash, it’s fire.

“I looked up the street and all I could see was a glow.”

These embers, sometimes the size of a screwdriver and five to 10 centimetres wide, were a sign for them to get out as soon as they could.

Items already packed in the car ready to go, with just the cat and the dog needing to be bundled into the car too, they left by about 11.30pm.

“I don’t even remember smelling the smoke until I was safe at (my in-law’s) house, but I’ve seen photos and videos and I’m just like, ‘how did I not even remember the smoke’, I was so focused on getting out.”

Having had questions since the events of Saturday night as to why they didn’t leave that afternoon, the resident said messaging led them to believe it was safe enough to stay, or in the case of Sheffield Road residents, to return home after evacuating earlier.

“You can’t just pack up every time there’s fire, small shrub and grass fires happen all the time.

We were told it was contained. We couldn’t see any smoke. There was no wind.

“So yes, we went to bed at 10 o’clock with the knowledge of going outside assessing it, feeling safe enough to be there, and we were quite ok with going to bed.

“It was so sudden, within that hour…It just goes to show how quick and instant it actually can be.”

Despite some criticism of the notifications being sent out to residents and the quick change in warnings on VicEmergency, the Crestview Close resident said hopefully the bushfire acts as a learning experience for everyone.

“From everything that’s happened, I really just hope it makes people think about it more literally and look at where we live. You can’t be complacent. You can’t ignore the fact that it might happen one day.

“It should always be, especially in the summer months, on your mind, keep the house tidy, keep your lawn short, keep your gutters clean. Make sure you don’t have rubbish laying around.

“Hopefully it’s just a reality check for people of where we live, and making sure you’ve got your plan of attack in place and making sure your kids understand.

“We can’t always rely on our phones. We don’t always have reception. Even with updates, you can’t always rely on your phones for that instant alert. And if you’re asleep, you might not hear your phone go off.”

match the unfolding situation, with some residents identifying that they went door knocking to warn neighbours, especially the elderly, that they had mere minutes to get out.

Deputy Incident Controller Mike Willmott said the difference between this fire claiming property and the Grampians bushfire early in the year claiming none, was the suburban interface and the proximity to houses.

“With just a slight breeze this fire became much more significant in the middle of the night and many CFA brigades and volunteers worked a very long 12+ hour shift to help protect lives and property,” Warrandyte CFA posted to social media.

“While this fire was not in our patch – it’s a very good example how fires can behave with the current dry conditions.”

Sunday’s rain proved helpful, stopping the spread of the fire enough to provide some relief to firefighters.

“There was some concern that it may spot over and get over into the Dandenong Ranges,” Mr Barbetti said.

“It’s a long, unburnt area. There are a lot of dead trees.”

Mr Willmott said the all agency response, including CFA, Forest Fire Management Victoria and Fire Rescue Victoria firefighters, as well as four helicopters and heavy machinery, helped contain the fire.

“They were all assisting and working as one to stop this fire from claiming more people’s residences,” he said.

“On this fire we (had) three CFA strike teams, with about 100 firefighters.”

turned to recovery.

Yarra Ranges Council began door-knocking efforts, with support from trained volunteers from the Victoria Council of Churches’ Emergencies Ministry, from Tuesday 18 March to check in on residents.

The then Mayor Jim Child said the community effort of support, kindness and out-reach has already been remarkable.

“In these difficult situations, it’s the incredible strength of our communities that shines through as they step up to support one another,” he said.

But grave concerns were held by wildlife rescuers and environmentalists who were awaiting the all clear to assess the damage and assist animals in need of treatment.

Mount Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association (MEEPPA) president Clare Worsnop said a major concern was loss of hollow-bearing trees.

With a known mated pair of Powerful Owls, a threatened species, calling the Dr Ken Leversha Reserve home and who welcomed twins this breeding season, Ms Worsnop said the hope is the young had already flown the hollow.

Bungalook Creek Wildlife Shelter rescuer Emma Cash said in the 24 hours until Thursday 20 March evening, “the Powerful Owls have been heard hooting”.

The area, “a high value biodiversity reserve”, is home to macropod species like Swamp Wallabies and Eastern Grey Kangaroos, possums and gliders, reptiles, birds and invertebrates, not to mention the diverse flora.

Ms Worsnop said aside from the burns themselves, a lack of food and dehydration would be a secondary cause of death to the animals stuck in the reserve.

“Resident reports give us hope that the local kangaroo mob and several wallabies have managed to escape the fire,” Ms Cash said.

“We have had a report of one deceased swamp wallaby, but the reality is there will be hundreds of animals that were not able to escape the inferno.”

With trees continuing to fall because of the unstable ground, Ms Worsnop said that “might ultimately become habitat for something else” but it will take years for the site to replenish.

“It may take several years before the regrowth comes back, and there’s enough food and shelter for those critters that have lost their homes,” she said.

“The loss of habitat, for what was living in it, especially if the big, old trees with hollows, those ones won’t exist anymore, and that will also have an impact on the future of the wildlife there, and it will take many years for it to totally regenerate.”

Six months later, small signs of rejuvenation were beginning to appear, but it was described by Ms Worsnop as a “slow process”.

“Caring for the bush and helping it to regenerate naturally as well as working out what is necessary in the longer term with re-vegetation is a long process.”

According to Ms Cash, locals can help out the local wildlife in a series of ways.

“People that live around the area can make their gardens as wildlife friendly as possible,” Ms Cash said.

“This involves planting native trees and shrubs and ground covers so that our wildlife have something safe to eat, but also installing nesting boxes in appropriate locations and keeping cats indoors.”

Capturing the Yarra Ranges The Star Mail’s six-week ‘Capturing the Yarra Ranges’ campaign narrowed in on the dilapidated CCTV network in the region in 2025, proving a hotbed for discussion.

The campaign, which was highly commended at the Victorian Country Press Association (VCPA) awards, saw the team hear views from a range of community members, consult experts in the field and press for answers.

The campaign began when a petition landed at the door of the Star Mail’s Healesville office in December 2024, courtesy of local resident Penelle, who had concerns due to a theft at a previous workplace and her experiences with a stalker.

After following up with Penelle in February 2025, the Star Mail found that many of the cameras, installed through grants from the Safer Communities Fund between 2013 and 2019, had gone offline in the years following.

Cameras were installed in 13 townships throughout the region at a total cost of over $1 million.

Mooroolbark Police Sergeant Cal Cunningham explained that cameras are hosted by businesses across the townships with signal boxes also installed to carry the footage back to the police station.

Sgt Cunningham said the camera network is invaluable to both live police investigations and accessing footage after the fact.

Trader and township groups were largely in favour of a well-maintained CCTV network, with supporters including the Mooroolbark Traders and Community Group, Monbulk and District Community Working Group (who have successfully maintained their cameras after taking over from the Monbulk Business Network), Millgrove Residents’ Action Group, Seville Township Group, Warburton Advancement League, Healesville Traders (who took over from the Healesville Chamber of Commerce) and the former president of the Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce.

“There’s been requests made to the Police Minister for some money. It’s gone to council, and everything has fallen on deaf ears from everybody,” Mooroolbark Traders and Community Group president Geoff Earney said.

“The Monbulk township funds all management and upkeep of the cameras, and our traders have been an incredible support in funding to ensure that we have cameras for the safety of our community,” MADCOW Co-President Aimee te Boekhorst said.

“The War Memorial subcommittee of the township group has been trying so hard to find out what is actually going on with the funding that was originally given to have a camera go in for us and we’re still struggling to know why we can’t get any answers and why it’s taken so long,” Vice President of the Seville Township Group Sue McMurdie said.

The Seville War Memorial Committee, part of the Seville Township Group, were also disappointed by the lack of CCTV which they believed could have helped prevent the vandalism that occurred at the memorial in 2023, with an announcement of donated CCTV cameras to protect the site made in November 2025.

The owners of the IGA (Shane Wyles) and Charlie Horse Vintage Clothing store (Charlie Gaultier) in Warburton also expressed their support, while CCTV was a suggestion put forward by owner of the TerryWhite Chemmart in Wandin North Nabih Barsoum following a break in at the pharmacy in June 2024.

However CCTV does not come without its concerns, with invasion of privacy, data collection and misuse the main issues and it is important to discuss what could constitute overreach, while others wanted to see active policing prioritised.

“A ‘smart city’ designed for safety, convenience and efficiency could be exploited for total surveillance of every citizen’s movements, interactions, and behaviours, potentially used to silence critics or control public opinion,” founder of MPYV Belinda Modesti said.

“There’s no police in town from Friday to Sunday, I like that there’s concern about the rate of crime in town but without proper policing, not even a car cruising around, I don’t think cameras will do what people want them to,” Healesville resident and owner of The Mare Coffee Company James Lee said.

Former Star Mail journalist Andrew Kwon also shared his thoughts on CCTV through the lens of his experience growing up in South Korea, which has an extensive public CCTV network as well as installs cameras in cars.

“A Korean was exposed to CCTV cameras at least 24 times a day on average… I looked up the number again to write this column and found out the number increased to 98 times for people in their 30s and 40s per day on average in 2021,” he said.

Griffith University lecturer in criminology and criminal justice Dr Ausma Bernot detailed the “privacy paradox”, a disconnect between what communities want, like that of the Yarra Ranges, and the use and need for effective law enforcement.

“A good place to start is with transparency.

So, for instance, how many cameras are we installing? Law enforcement might not want to say where those cameras are for investigatory purposes, but it’s good to say how many cameras are maintained,” Dr Bernot said.

Research manager at the Australian Institute of Criminology Anthony Morgan co-authored the research article ‘Does CCTV Help Police Solve Crime’ which found that while whether CCTV helps to solve crime is hard to determine, it can be highly valuable.

“We know that nine in 10 investigators reported using the footage when it was available… and two-thirds said they were able to use it for

The Labor, Liberal (eventual winner Aaron Violi), Greens and Independent candidates for the seat of Casey all expressed support for a return of the CCTV network in some form ahead of the election, while state MPs Cindy McLeish and Bridget Vallence also backed CCTV in their communities.

After many conversations, the Star Mail team weighed up potential solutions.

As a State Government entity, Victoria Police would be unable to manage any funds or grants to operate the CCTV system.

The Federal Government provided the initial funding to install the cameras but don’t have the scope to manage them, while the state advocates for partnerships between all three levels of government.

Star Mail found that 55 of Victoria’s 79 councils operated public CCTV in some capacity, ranging from extensive networks to small-systems targeting key locations.

Setting on Yarra Ranges Council as the most appropriate authority to manage a CCTV network in the region, the council was non-committal.

Yarra Ranges Council chief executive officer Tammi Rose said it was not possible for the council to fund the CCTV network.

“In a financially constrained environment and during a cost of living crisis, the high cost of maintaining and replacing public CCTV cameras would mean either a reduction of services elsewhere, or ratepayers would find the increased cost reflected in their rates,” she said.

The little remaining funding provided to the Yarra Ranges Safety Camera Network group, set up to manage the network, concluded at the end of the 2024/25 financial year.

2025 month-by-month ‘Sneaky’ parking fines lead to frustration of Lilydale traders, residents The 2025 year began with the “concern and anger” of traders, community members and the town’s action group after hefty fines were imposed with what they’ve said was no warning or notice.

The limits of 15 minute, one, two and three hour parking spaces have been in place for “many years” according to Yarra Ranges Council but the use of electronic monitoring, via cameras on cars, introduced in January 2024 triggered frustration with fines turning up weeks later.

“We have no parking, there’s 11 of us who work here, and none of us have anywhere to park, including the owner, so she’s had quite a few fines as well, which obviously we’re not super impressed by, because we’re only coming to work,” Linea of the Yarra Valley manager Shelbie White said.

A council spokesperson confirmed permits would not be utilised as part of the parking plan, instead increasing some restrictions to cater to the needs of businesses.

“Trader/ business permits will not be made available within the Lilydale township. Instead, the Lilydale Parking Precinct Plan focuses on providing equitable and balanced parking solutions for all users within the activity centre,” they said.

In a letter to councillor Tim Heenan and newly elected ward councillor Mitch Mazzarella the Lilydale Township Action Group (LTAG) called the new camera system “sneaky and underhanded”.

Yarra Ranges Council revealed exponential growth in its revenue garnered shire-wide from number plate recognition technology introduced for infringing timed parking.

Prompted by a question at the council meeting on Tuesday 28 January by Lilydale Township Action Group secretary Sharyn Manning, the council executive outlined the approximate $470,000 increase in infringements year-on-year.

“Council systems don’t currently identify a location based record of revenue at this stage… (but) council received approximately $27,600 in parking revenue across the whole municipality in the 2022-23 financial year, and approximately $501,200 in the 2023-24 financial year,” Yarra Ranges Council communities director Leanne Hurst said.

“I’m absolutely shocked to see the substantial increase from one year to another. I mean, the facts don’t lie,” Councillor Tim Heenan said.

Clubs pre-empted the ‘bad news’ before fire at Lilydale grandstand A suspicious fire, which left a section of the grandstand at Lilydale Recreation Reserve unusable, was not unexpected after months of damage and vandalism.

At around 5.30am on Wednesday 12 February, Lilydale CFA Brigade firefighters were paged to the blaze in the grandstand, suspected to have been called in by a passing train driver.

“It did manage to start in the floorboards. It spread to the chairs in this grandstand, then it went up into the part of the roof,” First Lieutenant Ron Haines said.

“We were able to contain the fire very, very quickly and we contained the fire to approximately an area of five by five metres, plus there must have been about 30 chairs damaged, and a small portion of the roof was scorched by fire.”

Lilydale Cricket Club president Steve Oxley said unfortunately “we’ve been preempting the bad news” with a group of young people hanging around, using the grandstand as a place to gather.

“For weeks now, it’s been coming. They’ve been breaking the seats, leaving a stack of debris up there, having copious amounts of drugs, and with no real consequence, because there’s not much we can do but talk to the police,” he said.

First seen using the grandstand at the start of football season in 2024, Lilydale Football Club president Anthony Simmons said the activity picked up throughout summer and the school holidays.

“They have no respect for the building or the facilities. Graffiti sprouts as soon as they start hanging around there,” he said.

Teaming up under the Lilydale RSL banner, the hope was for more funds to be raised for veteran support organisation Soldier On. Soldier On is the leading mental health support and veteran suicide prevention organisation in Australia, advocating for better outcomes for veterans of all ages but primarily younger vets and their families.

“Lilydale RSL are asking everyone to support the younger veterans as they have a 42 per cent higher rate of committing suicide than the general public, the statistics on their mental health is alarming,” Mr Dobson said.

Kindness thanked The families impacted by a devastating double house fire in Lilydale sent out their heartfelt thanks to the emergency service personnel, neighbours and local community for their support.

Two Mont Vue homes were engulfed by fire in March, seeing the fire start in one property and spread through the roof of the adjoining unit.

One resident was injured in the blaze, requiring transport to hospital, but all remaining residents were evacuated safely.

Unfortunately, both units experienced extensive damage.

It took 13 CFA crews, who were paged to the Mont Vue address, to bring the fire under control on Tuesday 11 March at around 7.30pm.

The residents said they were extremely grateful for the support, generosity and kindness of others in such a difficult time.

“I just wanted to reach out and thank everybody involved with helping my family and my neighbours’ family,” one resident said.

“I wish I had every name remembered and could give everyone something, but everyone was beyond fantastic. To the nurses who came to my neighbour’s aid, the nice lady who gave us water, and to the lady who was able to make my mum a tea and bring a biscuit for my brother, the couple who looked after my siblings and dog. You all (plus many more) made us believe in community and how amazing everyone is.

“A massive thank you to the CFA for their heroism and their courage. All (the) officers were comforting and amazing.”

Push to leave roo program The request for the Yarra Ranges to be exempt from the Victorian Government’s Kangaroo Harvesting Program (KHP) was denied.

Local resident Jan Heald said the decision was heartbreaking.

“It took a lot of time and work by members of the Yarra Ranges community, councillors, wildlife organisations and advocates plus people far and wide across Victoria who have offered their support,” she said.

“We respect kangaroos as Australia’s national icon and wish to see them live on country in their native land without exploitation, violence and harassment.

“I was very disappointed but it really just con-

In a statement, Yarra Ranges Council said they know that this decision will cause distress and concern among members of the community, particularly those who have voiced strong opposition to the inclusion of Yarra Ranges in the program.

In April, councillors voted to support a motion, asking the State Government to exclude the area from the program. Yarra Ranges is the only metropolitan council within the harvest zone and many community members have petitioned for the area to be excluded.

An Alban-easy victory May saw the re-election of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in a landslide victory for the Labor Party. An eventful election day in Casey saw a close battle between Liberal member Aaron Violi and Labor’s Naomi Oakley. At the last minute, however, Violi took the lead and retained his seat, stating in a post-election interview that “it was never in doubt”.

Statue of Sister Yeaman is finally unveiled The bronze bust of the Montrose wartime nurse was finally unveiled to the public on Sunday 18 May. Sister Edith Yeaman, at the age of 30, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Victoria in May 1915, about three weeks after the landing at Gallipoli.

She was a nurse at Melbourne Hospital and was also a member of the Australian Army Nursing Service, a reserve that was established in 1900.

The statue was established at the Montrose Town Centre to commemorate not only Sister Yeaman but also all of the nurses who served in times of war.

Montrose historian Eddie Tichelaar said it was important for the Montrose community to be able to grasp this opportunity to have a memorial in Montrose.

“We were fortunate enough to have Edith Yeaman from Montrose, who served in World War One,” he said.

The project was a joint effort of the Montrose Township Group, Montrose Men’s Shed and Mount Evelyn RSL member Max Lamb, with funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Saluting Their Service program.

Providing hope in times of turmoil In June, Star Mail told the story of Mooroolbark’s Manchester Road Dental Surgery dentist Dr David Rivadillo who joined eastern suburbs charity Sharing Hope on a trip to the Thai-Burma border to provide aid, medical care and training.

After a week-long stay in a refugee village in the Karen state, Dr David said it was an incredibly rewarding and eye-opening experience.

“Right now, Burma is still, unfortunately, in conflict, and it’s not safe at this point in time. The Karen people are still getting bombed in villages and there’s still fighting between the military and the Karen army,” Dr David said.

“Sharing Hope supports a school that’s across the border in Thailand, and the school teaches all the refugee kids, and the charity also supports the teachers there.

“This was the first dental program or dental mission trip for Sharing Hope, as well as for myself.”

Seeing the need first-hand, Dr David said “we barely touched the tip of the iceberg” and so he has plans to make dental care a priority for this community however he can.

Heritage ‘mockery’ as White Dog decays further A renewed push to protect Lilydale’s “cornerstone of the community” from further disrepair and dilapidation was touted again in July due to increasing safety fears.

Concerns for Lilydale’s famed White Dog Hotel, also known as Duke’s Saloon and formerly Lilydale Hotel, have reverberated through the community for more than a decade.

(Supplied) The current crumbling state of the building’s front verandah has reignited calls for Yarra Ranges Council to enact make-safe works to ensure the structural integrity of the heritage-listed facade.

Friends of The White Dog Facebook group founder Rob Hall made a submission at the 22 July council meeting requesting action to fix the facade or fine the owner for neglect.

“The White Dog is 160 years old and needs our help. So far, the heritage overlay protection isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on and continues to make a mockery of our local heritage laws,” he said.

The state of the heritage facade has been called “a hazard” by two long-time Lilydale residents, who are now in their seventies and eighties and can’t believe the site has been allowed to decay as it has.

“It’s dangerous…It looks like it’s going to fall down,” they said.

“The concrete is breaking apart. The steel is all rusty. And we said to the council, either get it demolished or get the owner to put a barricade around it for safety reasons.

“If it was laying out in the middle of nowhere, even then it should still be looked at but to be in the centre of Lilydale, an eyesore and people walking past it, and no one cares how Lilydale looks?”

Action over advocacy as homelessness reaches record levels A prominent sentiment of this year’s Homelessness Week was action over advocacy, as local services feel the brunt of rising rents and family violence.

This was the purpose of the Eastern Homelessness Network’s (EHN) Homeward Bound Walk on Tuesday 5 August, to bring community, government representatives and leading support organisations together.

Support services noted that they are unable to respond to the increasing number of households that lack a safe place to live.

services senior manager, Maidie Graham, said it is becoming evident that a lack of social housing and higher rents is exacerbating the situation.

“With more and more people struggling to afford the private rental market, the demand for affordable private rentals is outstripping supply,” she said.

“Combine this with a chronic shortage of public and community housing, we are seeing record levels of homelessness.”

Anchor Community Care chief executive officer Heidi Tucker said homelessness services are seeing more working couples who typically wouldn’t have required support in the past.

“There are less supports. There are less places to catch people, and people are falling out of their housing much more than they ever were. So many people are in rental stress,” she said.

Respect and remember all who serve in the line of duty In the wake of two police officers who were killed in action, the Star Mail wrote a series of stories in September to remember, reflect and honour all Victoria Police officers.

To commemorate National Police Remembrance Day on Monday 29 September, it was a day of sombre reflection as families remembered loved ones, especially Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart, who were shot dead in the line of duty in Porepunkah.

For Lilydale’s Kelly Parker, she knows this firsthand, as her husband has served as a member of Victoria Police for a little over eight years.

He joined when their youngest child was 10 days old, and with two children, Kelly admitted it can be challenging, “but overall we are proud he puts that uniform on each day”.

Bill and Janine Gerovasilis’ son, Elias, joined the Victoria Police Academy in October 2023, graduating in May 2024 and was posted to Belgrave Police Station for his first stint in the job.

fatal injuries after he came off the road in Emerald and collided with a tree in August 2024.

Joining the police force was never something his parents expected, with Bill saying, “it wasn’t his lifelong dream”, but his character and personality matched the profession to a tee.

“As a kid in the school yard, we used to call him the school yard copper because he would watch over the not-so-strong kids and be mindful of the bullies as well,” Bill said.

“He had a very strong sense of right and wrong and injustice.”

Although the grief of losing Elias will never disappear, advocating for change and being part of Police Legacy means Janine and Bill can carry on Elias’s memory and goal to make a difference.

Mooroolbark Community Garden ‘disgusted’, ‘outraged’ after plants removed, damaged The Mooroolbark Community Garden committee and volunteers have been left devastated after more than 100 plants, trees and seedlings were removed or destroyed.

A volunteer arrived at the garden at around 8.30am on Monday 6 October, to find someone trying to haul a bale of sugar cane mulch into their car.

Telling them to stop and leave the bale, the person fled in their car. Upon inspecting the garden beds and polytunnel, however, the devastation was far worse.

Community Garden president Tracey Langridge said they estimate that 150 plants, trees and seedlings were pulled from garden beds, pots and tubes and shoved into empty soil bags in an attempt to steal them.

“Approximately 150 plants were ripped out. So there were flowers, there were vegies, there were trees, fruit trees. It looked like a disaster zone,” she said.

“And it wasn’t a natural disaster; this was a human disaster.”

Having had “minor issues in the past” with five fruit trees being stolen late last year, Ms Langridge said “it leaves a nasty taste in the mouth” knowing that people feel the need to destroy and vandalise the garden.

“There have been so many people who invested in us, who care about what we’re trying to offer to the community, and so this really destroys our trust and makes us feel like, what part of our community could possibly do this?”

Kinder frustrations see exodus in Mooroolbark Changes to the hours and structure of a kindergarten in Mooroolbark ignited concerns among parents who felt blindsided by the new schedule for 2026.

Yarra Ranges Kinders’ Lancaster Preschool will shift to a long-day format of 7.5-hour days for both three and four-year-olds.

Several parents raised concerns about the hours being longer than a school day and what that would mean for toileting, eating and in other cases, medical conditions.

Yarra Ranges Kinders’ chief executive officer, Juliette Hammond said these changes were in response to growing preferences from families and

the Best Start, Best Life reforms.

Within three months, the concerns of parents had escalated beyond just timetabling and the length of kinder days, with the motivations and communication from management called into question.

In late October, a co-signed letter from 14 Lancaster Preschool parents called for Yarra Ranges Kinders’ to reinstate the 2025 timetable, reject any notion of three-four composite classes, undertake genuine consultation with parents and teachers, and uphold values of transparency.

As a single classroom-style building, parents rejected the idea of combining the two age groups.

“After months of frustration and disappointment, we write to express our deep concern and objection to the proposed 3/4 composite kindergarten class for 2026,” the letter states.

Ms Hammond said that consideration for combining the age groups was “due to high demand and low availability of three-year-old places”.

Multiple parents also confirmed with Star Mail that all teaching staff resigned.

This drove some families to leave the kindergarten entirely, enrolling elsewhere for 2026, choosing instead to pay out of pocket for the surety of what they are getting.

Community claims quarry expansion puts nature, clean air, health at risk In the final weeks of December, the Star Mail published several articles highlighting community concerns after it came to light in October that Boral had applied for a 30-year, 30-acre expansion at its Montrose site.

“Montrose deserves better. Our schools deserve better, and our children deserve far, far better”.

This was the passionate declaration of a mother and school teacher, Melissa, as one of many hundreds of people campaigning against the expansion of Boral’s Montrose quarry.

Her statement was met with loud applause at the Stop the Montrose Quarry Expansion community meeting held on Wednesday 3 December, where 130 residents and community members attended.

The series of articles produced looked at the key factors concerning residents, including airborne dust, and environmental and health impacts.

Each of these concerns voiced was put to Boral, with a response being returned.

Member of the group and retired engineer Phillip Dane said the best outcome would be a complete rejection of the expansion “on environmental grounds” or, secondly, a full environment effects statement (EES) be required.

Mr Dane said an EES is the “highest level of environmental assessment in Victoria” and is an expensive, timely and effortful exercise.

Boral has submitted the required referral documentation to planning minister Sonya Kilkenny, who is the sole decision maker on either the approval, rejection or requirement for an EES.

Bushfire Resilience project

By Gabriella Vukman Star Mail was awarded a grant from the Walkley Solutions Journalism Fund to deliver an in-depth journalism project examining how communities across the Yarra Ranges strengthened their resilience to bushfires.

Over five months, the project explored how residents, agencies, Traditional Owners and scientists worked together to address bushfire risk in a region deeply shaped by fire.

The aim was to move beyond disaster-focused reporting and instead highlight practical, evidence-based strategies that strengthened preparedness, supported recovery and built longterm resilience.

To achieve this, Star Mail’s Gabriella Vukman visited sites throughout the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, documenting initiatives including controlled and cultural burning, habitat regeneration, community action groups, firefighter training and emerging preparedness technologies.

Interviews were conducted with residents, fire service professionals, environmental scientists and Indigenous leaders, alongside analysis of data from fire authorities, environmental agencies and academic research.

The project culminated in a series of in-depth articles and seven videos published on the Star Mail YouTube channel, each exploring different dimensions of bushfire resilience, including land management, township action, social trauma recovery, habitat regeneration, firefighter preparedness and community education.

Preparedness, - a unifying theme Preparation for an increasingly dangerous bushfire season emerged as a consistent theme across every community, agency and landscape in the Yarra Ranges. With forecasts indicating heightened fire risk, residents, volunteer groups and authorities alike emphasised that readiness was critical to protecting lives, property and the environment.

While each part of the Yarra Ranges faced unique bushfire risks due to differing terrain, vegetation and weather patterns, several universal preparedness measures were consistently reinforced.

Central among these was the importance of having a clear, well-practised bushfire plan.

Community leaders and fire authorities encouraged residents to know their trigger to leave, plan evacuation routes, prepare essential items, make arrangements for pets and livestock, and stay informed through reliable warning systems such as the VicEmergency app.

Pet preparedness was identified as a significant barrier to early evacuation. Community safety advocates worked to address this by encouraging residents to plan dog-friendly destinations, organise carriers for smaller animals and identify safe locations for livestock well before extreme fire danger days.

These practical solutions aimed to remove hesitation and support early evacuation.

Making homes more fire-resilient was another major focus. Measures such as installing gutter guards, clearing fine fuels within 100 metres of buildings, maintaining gardens and protecting vents were repeatedly highlighted as effective ways to reduce ember attack.

In rural and semi-rural areas, broader landscape approaches, including windbreaks, shelter belts and carefully managed grazing, were promoted as complementary tools to reduce fire intensity and protect assets.

Local CFA brigades encouraged residents to attend open days, seek property advice visits and engage with local volunteers to ensure plans reflected suburb-specific risks.

When interviewed, experts also stressed that bushfire behaviour was changing due to climate change, with altered wind patterns, fuel loads and fire frequency requiring communities to continually adapt.

Fire as a land management tool A central focus of the project was how fire was being reintroduced and managed as a tool for both risk reduction and ecological health.

Cultural burning, led by Traditional Owners, was formally incorporated into Yarra Ranges Council’s planned burning program in 2024.

These low-intensity, “cool burns” aimed to heal Country, restore biodiversity and reduce bushfire risk without damaging soil or ecosystems.

“It’s been a long journey, probably about nine or 10 years but we are implementing it now,” he said.

Wurundjeri man and Indigenous Development Officer Darren Wandin explained that cultural burning prioritised regeneration rather than fuel reduction alone.

“Fuel reduction isn’t the name of the game,” Mr Wandin said.

“What we’re looking at is reintroducing and revitalising existing species,” he said.

Alongside cultural burns, planned burning remained an essential land management practice.

Conducted under strict conditions and managed collectively by the CFA, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) and the Yarra Ranges Council, planned burns reduced fuel loads, moderated fire behaviour and supported biodiversity.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Tamara Beckett said the program encompassed multiple approaches.

“As part of the Planned Burning Program, we undertake risk reduction burns, ecological burns and cultural burns, so we refer to the whole lot as the planned burning program,” Ms Beckett said.

University of Melbourne bushfire behaviour expert Dr Trent Penman emphasised the need for balance.

“If we leave fire out of many of our ecosystems, we start to lose plant and animal species from those systems,” Dr Penman said.

“It is about finding the right mix of fire, in order to maintain and promote our country’s biodiversity,” he said.

The project also explored emerging practices such as mulching, windbreaks and bushfire moderation zones, which reduced flame height, slowed fire spread and limited ember attack, particularly around built-up areas.

Recovery, Regeneration and Community Leadership Beyond fire prevention, the reporting highlighted the long-term impacts of bushfire on people and landscapes.

At Dr Ken Leversha Reserve in Montrose, early signs of regeneration were visible months after fire had stripped the area of its canopy.

Community groups focused on supporting natural recovery while monitoring threatened species such as Powerful Owls.

Across the region, township and community action groups played a vital role in strengthening preparedness and recovery.

Township and Community Action Groups in Montrose, Warburton, Millgrove, Healesville, Kalorama–Mount Dandenong, Wesburn and Yarra Junction among others, worked on emergency planning, education, signage, energy resilience and community hubs.

The project also examined social trauma recovery, acknowledging that emotional impacts often emerged long after fires were extinguished.

Preparing Households and Communities Residents were encouraged to develop and rehearse bushfire plans, addressing when to leave, where to go, what to take and how to stay informed. Community advocates consistently stressed that leaving early remained the safest option.

Vice President of the Millgrove Residents Action Group Phil Pomeroff said preparedness begins with simplicity.

“Bushfire preparedness is having your plan,” Mr Pomeroff said.

“You should leave as early as you can,” he said.

Pet preparedness again emerged as a critical issue. Kalorama CFA Community Safety Coordinator Virginia Porter worked to remove barriers by promoting pet-friendly evacuation options.

“What we found is that a lot of people won’t leave because they can’t take their dogs with them,” Ms Porter said.

“We want people to leave before there is a fire,” she said.

Fuel management near homes was repeatedly highlighted as a priority.

Graeme George from the Healesville Community Emergency Group said, “The critical amount of fuel is the fuel within 100 metres of an asset.”

“Houses are most likely to burn down if there’s fuel within 100 metres of them,” he said.

Environmental scientist Graeme Lorimer reinforced the importance of location-specific advice.

“Each particular location has its own unique aspects and vegetation,” Mr Lorimer said.

“People need to be aware that things are changing almost year by year.”

Innovation and firefighter readiness The project also showcased innovation in preparedness, including immersive virtual reality training designed to simulate bushfire decision-

making under pressure. Participants reported increased awareness of stress responses and evacuation timing.

Community Safety Coordinator at the Kalorama CFA, Virginia Porter was also heavily involved in rolling out the new VR program.

Ms Porter said, “The sessions are also about how one’s ideas, judgement and mindset can change under pressure.”

Behind the scenes, firefighter training and readiness formed another critical layer of resilience.

Seasonal training camps in the Yarra Valley prepared hundreds of recruits through intensive hands-on instruction.

“Forest Fire Management Victoria is gearing up for the summer,” said District Manager Dan White.

When it comes to bushfire, regeneration and social recovery, all interviewees noted that these items are a shared responsibility.

“There’s only so much we as public land managers can do,” Deputy Chief Fire Officer Tamara Beckett said “Residents in bushfire-prone areas need to manage their properties and have a fire plan,” she said.

Across all reporting, a clear conclusion emerged: bushfire resilience in the Yarra Ranges was not built through a single solution. It was created through sustained collaboration between Traditional Owners and councils, agencies and scientists, firefighters and residents, neighbours and communities.

From cultural burning and ecological recovery to township planning, trauma-informed care, new technology and individual preparedness, the solutions highlighted throughout Star Mail’s Walkley-funded project demonstrated that resilience was an ongoing process grounded in shared responsibility, local knowledge and care for both people and Country.

Fascinating tales of past A veteran’s tale of 100 years In 100 years of life, Eddie Ham has travelled from country Victoria to fighting from the air in World War II and back again, fallen in love twice and had four beautiful children.

Born 6 May 1925, Mr Ham celebrated his 100th birthday this year.

Growing up on a farm about 10 miles west of Rochester and attending high school in Echuca, Mr Ham remembers as far back as 1928 when his father bought his first car, something Mr Ham would learn to drive at just 13-years-old.

By the time he was 18, Mr Ham had joined the Air Training Corp as the war in Europe intensified and it was gaining momentum closer to home shores.

Mr Ham, and pilot Dick Scott, flew in a Beaufighter, while others flew in Bostons, but “soon, we were in the action against the Japanese”.

He was based at Morotai in what was then the Dutch East Indies and the years of the war were spent fighting and escaping death, navigating unknown territories and waters.

On 10 June, the date of the allied invasion, Mr Ham and his pilot, Mr Scott, were preparing for flight.

“We got into the air and I think my pilot knew that he was going to be in trouble. He said to me a few times, ‘let’s get it over with’.

“The engine failed. There was a reef around the island and it wasn’t so deep there. We crashed inside the reef. It was a violent crash. I couldn’t see anything on the ground until I woke up after I got knocked out.”

Mr Ham suffered from the fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae being crushed from the impact and a few abrasions on his arms.

Sadly, Mr Scott didn’t survive. He died at the age of 20.

Noting his service as “necessary” Mr Ham said there were so many times when he “shouldn’t have come back” and “at least twice I should have died”.

Mr Ham served as part of 34 Squadron until the end of the war, helping transport cargo, men and supplies across the Pacific.

The marvellous Monty Maizels: a life of film and radio over 102 years From delivering an iconic line in an Australian classic to working with some of Australia’s greatest radio talent, Monty Maizels has had a life and career like no other.

Celebrating his 102nd birthday on Thursday 26 June surrounded by family in Kilsyth, Monty’s mind and cheeky smile remained as sharp as a tack.

Admitting that he’s “never not been an actor”, fooling everyone at birth, Monty’s earliest memory of acting was at the age of eight when he played Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk for a local production in London.

Fast forward to 1997 and Monty would be cast as another character named Jack but this time in one of Australia’s most notable films: The Castle.

As the neighbour of the Kerrigans, Monty’s character Jack gets to deliver the line “yeah, f*** ‘em’ – a line that would become well-known among film buffs.

“It’s the first time I ever heard him swear,” Monty’s son Andrew said.

One day on the set of The Castle, in between scenes, Monty was left in the company of famed actor and director Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell, known for roles in Breaker Morant and Ned Kelly, getting

Frank and Mary Ruigrok are still entirely devoted to each other after 70 years. (Ruigrok Media) to chat and natter about everything and nothing.

While acting was a hobby for Monty, his career in radio began decades before.

“It was always exciting and fun,” Monty said.

Survival against all odds: the story of one man’s service in both World Wars The tale of Joseph Leslie O’Rourke, a veteran of both World Wars, is one of luck, determination and a will to survive against all odds.

From the shores of Gallipoli to the battlefields of France, and then on home soil, Joseph spent many years of his life serving his country and eventually settling in Montrose for a little more than a decade.

Born in 1897, Joseph was no stranger to hard work, nor hardship, in the early part of his life.

At just 15 years old in September 1912, Joseph and his father were travelling by train to Coburg when it collided with a special showground train bound for Spencer Street Station.

Newspaper articles at the time said “several passengers were pinned by the wreckage” requiring extrication by rescuers.

Riding the train up near the engine, Joseph was “jammed by the leg and he groaned with pain”. Rescuers “hacked with vigour and skill”, freeing him from the wreck.

At 18, he joined the war effort. Joseph served under the Australian Imperial Force’s 14th Battalion, fighting in Gallipoli for the entirety of Australia’s campaign.

Surviving through illness and the horrors of Gallipoli, Joseph was reassigned to the 46th Battalion in 1916 with the rest of the remaining veterans of the 14th Battalion, destined for France and the Western Front.

Throughout his service, he was severely injured three times and had to be hospitalised. The second time, however, he met his wife Kate.

Joseph was officially discharged as a Private on 22 May 1919 in Melbourne at 22 and a half years old after 1611 days in service and 1415 days abroad.

By the time the Second World War began, Joseph was prepared and ready to serve yet again, signing up in 1941. This time, he served on home soil as a Sergeant at Mangalore.

After all the luck Joseph seemed to have in his life, just 10 years after exiting his service, he suffered a heart attack and died before reaching the hospital, aged 65 years in 1962.

99 tales and a bottle of champagne to celebrate Dawn Rooke’s birthday From a chance meeting with Marilyn Monroe to administering first aid to firefighters in some of Victoria’s worst disasters, Dawn Rooke has seen and done much in her 99 years.

Celebrating her 99th birthday on Tuesday 30 September surrounded by her friends at the Lilydale Croquet Club, Ms Rooke was delighted and overjoyed by the spread they put on for her.

First joining the croquet club in 2005, Ms Rooke still plays regularly, showing off her skills and competitive edge.

But before her days playing croquet, Ms Rooke was an adventurer from a very young age.

By the age of 22, Ms Rooke had married an English master mariner in London, something that would take her around the world multiple times.

“I’ve had an interesting life.”

From the South of France to the very top of the

northern hemisphere, to places like Hammerfest in Norway, Ms Rooke saw much of the world in four years, experiencing life abroad and gaining many memories.

But there’s one story from around 1956 that she could never forget.

Her husband’s ship had docked when an invitation to attend a dinner party came from someone of rank. Ms Rooke recalls it being a count or viscount.

“It was a big mansion of a place, and my husband couldn’t go because he had to be on duty.

So I went on my own,” she said.

“We were changing for dinner, and there was a knock on my door, and I opened it, and there was Marilyn Monroe. She was also invited, and she said to me, ‘excuse me, have you got a safety pin?’

And very quietly she said, ‘I’ve broken my strap, would you please use the safety pin and fasten it?’

“I didn’t realise it was her to begin with. And then it suddenly dawned on me that it might be Marilyn Monroe.”

When not jetsetting across the globe, raising children or playing croquet, Ms Rooke spent 21 years volunteering for the Red Cross, teaching first aid and administering it during fire disasters.

“We would treat the firefighters when they came in with burnt feet and injuries. So we would treat them, put them to bed, and feed them, and that’s what I mostly did during the bushfires,” she said.

“I would also go out on road accidents or aircraft accidents. Anything, we were called.”

Endless devotion after 70 years married After a lifetime of devotion to each other and decades separating their newly married selves from their ageing bodies and minds, one thing remains evident between Mary and Frank Ruigrok: their love is pure and deep, a love that transcends distance and life’s challenges.

Seventy years ago, a young Mary, 25, and a young Frank, 26, married just one day before they boarded a ship and sailed for Australia, leaving behind their homeland, Holland, in search of a better life.

It was 6 October 1955, 10 years since World War II ended, and life in the Netherlands was somewhat bleak for families and young couples.

Mary was from Heemstede, and Frank was from Hillegom, both regions known for tulip bulb growing.

Between meeting and marriage, Frank worked at the bulb fields. Having left school at 14, after his work day, he’d attend night school to study horticulture.

Deciding to leave Holland was a choice Frank said they “never regretted”.

When asked what it was like moving to Australia in their mid-20s, Frank said “it was an adventure”.

With so many years spent together, by each other’s side, when Mary was diagnosed with dementia, Frank took it upon himself to care for her.

But earlier this year, Mary had a fall and damaged her hip. In March, she moved into MiCare in Kilsyth. Frank still lives independently at their family home.

Their daughter Lynette said it’s one of the most challenging things they’ve had to deal with, being separated from each other.

“That’s the really hard thing, they both miss each other,” she said.

“I wish we were together,” Mary said.

Powerful stories recounted Haul of awards for talented Lilydale theatre cast, crew From costumes to lighting, lead roles and supporting roles, Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre Company (LATC) won 15 awards from 34 nominations at the Lyrebird Awards, the most of any company, presented on Saturday 1 February.

Three of the five productions from 2024 garnered awards being Still Alice, Suite Surrender and Clue.

With “so much talent in Melbourne”, Fiona Carter said, being able to bring that to audiences in Lilydale, no matter the show, no matter the script.

“I’m so glad that we’ve got these community theatres where it’s quality theatre. We want to make something good that people will enjoy, that will make them think, make them laugh, make them cry, and it’s like you get to live somebody else’s life when you’re watching it and and as an audience, I want to be touched.”

Toasting a contemporary version of Melba in new exhibition The culmination of two years’ worth of work to bring a contemporary view of famed opera singer Dame Nellie Melba to the Yarra Ranges finally launched in February with a Toast to Melba.

Described as the Taylor Swift or Kylie Minogue of her era, Yarra Ranges Regional Museum director Megan Sheehy and curator Maddie Reece said this fresh perspective of the singer, mother and revered woman was designed to cater to an entirely new audience.

“What we are trying to do with the exhibition, is to find the elements of her story that are of interest and relevance today particularly for young women who might look to different pop stars and social media influencers, and to really position her as the first person to do that, not just in Australia, but in the world, and to help people understand that she really was the Taylor Swift of her era,” Ms Sheehy said.

“She was that first celebrity. Celebrity and the concept of fame is coined off of Melba, not just people like Melba, but Melba herself,” Ms Reece said.

Heart and hands: Fiona Carter’s love of the piano hits the small screen Fiona Carter has been playing the piano since the age of five.

As a well-known and loved performer at the Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre Company, her piano playing is just one of many talents, one she sometimes pulls out on stage.

After a chance email to the Theatre that Ms Carter happened to respond to, she was selected from 1600 applications to be a part of the ABC’s The Piano TV series.

Flying to Sydney to perform and be interviewed by Amanda Keller, only to learn afterwards that “Andrea Lam and Harry Connick Jr had been watching and listening to us”.

Musicality and performing was somewhat of a family trait, passed on from her grandmother and mother, which flowed onto Ms Carter’s daughters and nieces, too.

“Mum used to play for us six girls to sing. We performed as the Williams Family Singers. Dad couldn’t carry a tune, but loved hearing us all play and sing. His father was a pianist too,” Ms Carter said.

“Some of my earliest memories are of lying in bed at night, hearing mum play the piano.”

But her love of performing doesn’t match the simple task of practising at home with her grandmother’s baby grand piano.

“I love the structure and discipline of practising the piano. The world goes away when my heart and my hands combine to make music.”

Art gives Milie the will to keep going after MND diagnosis Breaking free of the confines set around her, Milie Woods always knew art was a calling she couldn’t resist, little did she know one day it would also provide immense comfort in hardship.

“For me, it’s just who I am. I’ve always been creative. I always wanted to paint. I taught myself to paint under the bed at night as a kid. And look, it’s always been in me,” she said.

As someone who paints every day, Milie said her collection of works is extensive, with roughly 200 pieces accumulated over time.

So when Milie was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in December 2024, it felt like the perfect opportunity to present her art and raise funds while doing so.

Bird Artspace in Lilydale on 1 June, Milie’s exhibition raised thousands of dollars for MND Victoria.

Despite losing her ability to paint the intricate details she is used to, Milie said if she weren’t able to create art at all, she wouldn’t be as positive as she is.

“What I’m trying to do at the moment is to adapt my artwork to what’s happening to my body.

“It keeps my mind busy. It keeps my mind occupied. It is something I love…If I couldn’t paint, I think I’d just go down hill. It just gives me the will to keep going.

“If you give up, then it just lets the disease take over. When you’re given a diagnosis that is life threatening if you give up, it only progresses further.”

Telling the untold stories of life, hardship and home The untold tales of Yarra Ranges residents, whose histories are rooted in stories of work, play, hard-

ship and love, craft a vision of what the region was like decades ago.

Wanting to honour and give light to these nearly forgotten stories, the Lilydale Community House set out on a path to do just that.

Receiving funding from the Lilydale Revitalisation Board, the We’re Not Dead Yet project began.

On Tuesday 29 July, the finished product, a book of collected stories, officially launched.

“This came about through conversations I had with various older members of our community and realising how amazing and varied people’s lives have been and still are,” Community house coordinator Suyin Chan said.

“Some have had massive challenges along the way. All have lived very interesting lives. As we get older, we become more invisible in so many ways.

“I wanted to highlight the stories of a few and acknowledge their amazing lives, and hope that others will acknowledge them too. Too many peo-

ple may assume that you haven’t done much in your life, and it’s far from the truth.”

The powerful act of crafting change The power of craft to bring about change and awareness on the issues and challenges facing society is not new but craftivist Tal Fitzpatrick brings a new lens to this old concept.

Her touring collection of textile banners landed at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in early August, exploring themes of gender-based inequality.

Changemakers: Crafting a difference formed part of the Museum of Australian Democracy’s (MoAD) larger exhibition in Canberra highlighting women’s contributions to Australia’s democracy and development.

“Craft has always really been used as part of people’s modes of resistance and self-advocacy, and we can see that all around the world, all through history,” Tal said.

From Cornwall with love

By Tania Phillips Cornwall is considered one of the most remote and yet beautiful counties in England.

And the county’s North Coast with its dramatic cliffscapes, craggy coves, boundless white-tipped breakers and kilometres and kilometres of golden sands is a jewel in the crown, a hikers paradise – beloved by it’s local residents including local fisherman Jeremy Brown, who is more than happy to extoll it’s beauty, heritage and culture.

Part of a five-generation fishing family Jeremy lives in Port Isaac – a quintessential Cornish Fishing village – known for its narrow, winding streets lined with charming, whitewashed cottages that overlook a picturesque harbour – locally referred to as the Platt.

It has gained fame as the fictional village of Port Wenn in the BBC series Doc Martin with many a visitor searching the historic village for the “Grumpy Doc’s” landmarks according to the seasoned fisherman and part-time singer.

However, Jeremy and his fellow members of Fisherman’s Friends – a group of local men who have been taking sea shanty’s to the world through their two successful movies, musicals and their forthcoming first Australian tour – are slowly changing that. Bringing the tourism focus back on the beautiful landscape and vibrant living culture.

Fishing heritage dates back to the early fourteenth century in Port Isaac. It’s a village that has always been deeply connected to the sea, with fishing continuing to play a significant role in the lives of its residents. The village’s name comes from the Cornish Porthysek, meaning ’corn port’, a nod to its historic role in the grain trade.

“People actually do turn up now and look for someone from the Fisherman’s Friends and not just the grumpy old Doc,” Jeremy laughed.

“It’s been a goal of mine in a way – to have some people come to Port Isaac to see the home of Fisherman’s Friends. People have always come to Port Isaac it’s such a pretty place – but then we got a certain amount of the Tourism which was just people looking for the Doc’s House and what have you.

“Even though we’ve got members in from other Ports now – Padstow and Boscastle – it is the home of the Fisherman’s Friends and people do make a beeline for it but of course the village sells itself - it’s so pretty.”

And on Wednesday nights Jeremy, an original member of the group, formed to raise a bit of money for charity back in the 90s, can often be found in the pub singing sea shanties with the rest of the community. The band on stage on those nights is The Yarnigoats who do a lot of the Fisherman’s Friends repertoire as well as their own music. Local gigs are few and far between for the Friends these days.

“Very occasionally about three times this year – on our group WhatsApp chat – we just say is anyone free on Friday and we just do an impromptu gig,” he said.

“But we can’t advertise it these days because

If it looks familiar its probably because it’s better-known to a lot of the world as Port Wenn thanks to the TV Show Doc Martin. it causes chaos down there. If we advertise it we get 2000 people turn up – paramedics, police and marshals have to come because there’s no parking in the village – it’s all out of the village.

“The old sea shanties are obviously from the days of sail so we’re going back hundreds of years.

“But for some reason they’ve got some sort of resonance with people. When we first started singing we had no ambition other than to raise a few pounds for charity. We started singing in the open air at Port Isaac – it’s a bit of an amphitheatre and it sort of lends itself to it.”

The beauty and setting of the village evokes the past and the fishing culture.

“Everything rolls downhill to the harbour,” Jeremy says.

“It’s a very small harbour and it’s straight into the open ocean from there. You’ve got the North Atlantic right out there and the gales literally come right on through and they sweep up the streets and we have to move all the boats.”

He said visitors invariably always find themselves at the bottom of the village at The Platt – a concreted area where the fishermen (like Jeremy’s son who is one of just a few professional fishermen left in the town) keep their dingy. The Platt is also where Fisherman’s Friends got their start and still pop up from time to time.

“You can get a beer and just sit on the Platt or you can go up to our local pub where some of the filming in our films took place and enjoy the atmosphere and have a sing.”

No need to make rustic backdrops for photos, movies or TV shows in Port Isaac in the breathtaking county of Cornwall in the UK. Jeremy believes the best thing that has come out of the adventure of Fisherman’s Friends is the revival of pub singing – of singing just for the joy of it at your local and of keeping that part of Cornish Culture alive. Of course, the band’s trip to Australia is another bonus – and it helps that it’s in the English winter when work is not so busy.

“Singing has not really taken us around the world because we’ve all still got our regular jobs,” he said.

The group’s first Australian tour starts in Adelaide on 7 January and closes out in Perth on 25 January and takes in all States and the ACT. Tickets on sale head to the fishermans-friends website for more information.

Dr Emery has recently left the practice after selling it earlier this year. He has graciously agreed to join the Yarra Junction Dental team after Dr Gin has been forced to retire due to injury and ill-health. Dr Gin, however, will still be available for a chat!

Dr Emery joins a team of five other dentists and seven qualified supporting staff (nurses/receptionists), most of whom have worked there for a long time – a good sign of a happy, positive working environment!

Dr Gin has owned the clinic since 1993 and has always prided himself on maintaining it as a family-friendly general practice.

He has been caring for the community for decades, having treated four generations of some families, and considers this to have been both

a privilege and an honour. Having Dr Emery on board will ensure the philosophies of the clinic will continue for years to come.

Freemasons donate $55k The Freemasons of the Monash Gully District, together with the Freemasons Foundation Victoria, have proudly funded the Interchange Outer East Sibling Program since 2009.

The partnership began when Freemason RWBro Keith Thornton arranged an ongoing line of support with then Interchange chief executive officer, Fred Brumhead.

The Sibling Program provides activities and camps that bring together disadvantaged siblings of children with special needs.

Funding supports travel to venues, activity materials, meals, and essential equipment.

Through participation in the program, children develop greater self-confidence, improve their academic outcomes, and build social skills that enable them to contribute positively to their families and the wider community. The program is fully funded by Freemasons.

This year, Freemasons presented a cheque for $55,240 as part of a renewed three-year commitment to fund the program’s budget.

This latest contribution brings total funding over the past 17 years to $559,580. Funds are raised annually by local Freemasons through a variety of initiatives, including the annual Monash Gully Masters Gala Night.

The cheque presentation was well attended by parents, Interchange Outer East staff and volunteers, Freemasons Foundation Victoria representatives, and members of the Monash Gully District. Speakers at the event included Jacinta Benne (Family Support Programs Coordinator), RWBro Lionel May (Monash Gully District Coordinator), Sandra Jacobs (chief executive officer, Freemasons Foundation Victoria), and RWBro Miles King (Deputy Grand Master).

A successful year for Lilydale RSL, and more to come The Lilydale RSL Sub-branch marked its 106th year with a number of significant achievements for the club. We had a marked increase in our membership, in our weekly Darts Competition, in our revenue takings and in attendances at our commemorative services on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. Also, the amounts we have raised for our welfare programs by selling Anzac tokens and poppies locally have been impressive.

To this, we owe a huge vote of thanks to our volunteer sellers and to the general public for their support.

The club has remained committed this year to working with our community colleagues and has sponsored representatives in the Soldier On March, the Veterans Games and the Australian RSL Lawn Bowls Carnival.

We have also worked closely with the Yarra Ranges Council to have new lighting and asphalt installed around the Lilydale War Memorial and flagpole and having the Australian Flag added to the shire documents. The club also had representatives involved in the Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans Day, the Cemetery’s Twilight Ceremony and at services held at the Seville War Memorial, as well as various sporting clubs and schools.

Our work in educating our youth in our Anzac heritage has continued and we have undertaken programs throughout the year with local schools and the Lilydale Scouts.

At the same time, our Ralph Goode Educational Library has increased, and we have been able to add lighting to the memorials at the front of our building. One member attended a special ceremony in September at the Shrine of Remembrance that honoured Jim Baddeley, the club’s last World War One member, and we were delighted that our last World War Two veteran, George Robson, celebrated his centenary this year.

As we kick off 2026, we have a number of improvements, projects and events planned, and we invite anyone who would like to help or be involved, especially our younger veterans who are the future of any RSL, to join with us in friendship and comradeship at the Lilydale RSL. The third film in the Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash is another serviceable, visually stunning sci-fi action movie in a franchise running low on ideas.

On the alien world of Pandora, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his Na’vi family grapple with mounting human imperialism and the warlike Mangkwan clan.

Beyond the staggeringly beautiful, immersive visuals, grand score and soaring action sequences – James Cameron is still a tremendous technical director – the best parts of this alien adventure are human, more-orless. Spider (Jack Champion), a plucky human boy born on Pandora, is a headstrong but deeply likeable character who is loyal to the Na’vi but feels increasingly outcast. Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who was resurrected in an engineered Na’vi body in the previous film, is still a fun swaggering zealot but has far more nuance this time, as he tries to be a better father for Spider and forms a relationship with Varang (Oona Chaplin), the fierce Mangkwan leader. Quaritch still serves the human occupying force, so it’s intriguing to watch him integrate more with the natives after meeting one as unhinged and nasty as he is (and some people online jokingly compare Quaritch to real white supremacists who paradoxically have nonwhite partners).

Like the other Avatar films, most of Fire and Ash’s characters are underdeveloped, Jake Sully is a bland hero and the conflicts carry little weight or lasting peril. For example, Jake’s wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) develops an understandable hatred of humanity after the death of her son in the second film, and she rejects Spider as a result, but we know she won’t do anything to him because Varang already fills the “Evil Neytiri” role in the plot. The long (just over three hours) but undernourished narrative suffers from being a middle instalment, retreading many of the same plot and action beats from the first two films (including a tired subplot about whale pacifism) and setting up further sequels without accomplishing much on its own. Some people still argue that the Avatar franchise has no cultural relevance, but they’re mistaken. The fact that each Avatar film rakes in over a billion dollars globally, helping to keep cinemas alive in the process, is cultural relevance. The fact that we still discuss Avatar in terms of visually beautiful but thinly-written epics, or as Ferngully in space or Dances With Wolves with nine-foot Smurfs, is cultural relevance, for better and worse. The recurring question of whether Avatar has any cultural relevance, ironically, is relevance.

Each Avatar film has, broadly speaking, focused on a different classical element.

The first film followed an air-themed Na’vi tribe, The Way of Water featured a M?oriinspired water tribe and Fire and Ash features a volcano-dwelling fire-themed tribe.

James Cameron has planned two more Avatar films, and I predict the fourth Avatar film will feature an earth-themed Na’vi tribe to complete the classical elements. By the way, while the Avatar franchise is Cameron’s baby, it would be nice if Cameron brought new directors into his universe, like how other filmmakers took on the Terminator franchise after him, or how Cameron himself followed Ridley Scott’s Alien with the amazing Aliens. Featuring a great antagonist in Quaritch but otherwise too similar to its predecessors, Avatar: Fire and Ash is another landmark special effects extravaganza and a resplendent thrill-ride that isn’t as deep as it thinks it is, and is playing in most Victorian cinemas.

What a year for local sport Kynon earns national cap For the first time in six years Lilydale Swimming Club was represented at nationals even after a tumultuous two years of not having a home base.

Kynon qualified for nationals earlier this year, reaching the necessary state and national times, booking the teenager a spot in the Australian Age Championships in Brisbane.

“It’s definitely a big step. I get to go cross country. I’m excited, nervous but excited,” he said.

Head coach Duana Mcleod said this is something that has been building over a number of years for Kynon, who started competitive swimming at the age of 10.

“It’s been a long time coming, building the long term goal for a couple years, and then that long term goal became shorter and shorter,” she said.

The 16-year-old trains six days a week, plus gym sessions, to achieve his best, with dreams of the Olympics but said he just wants to go as far as he can in the sport.

Rising star taking the karting track by storm Thirteen-year-old Jai George from Croydon South achieved a spot on the podium at the Australian Kart Championships held at the Todd Road circuit in Port Melbourne.

The young driver displayed his talent and speed across the three days of racing in the highly competitive KA3 junior class, contesting 77 drivers from all over the country.

Despite missing out on the win after leading majority of the race including the last lap, it was an emotional victory for Jai achieving a third place podium in the highest national level of karting in Australia in front of a huge crowd which was celebrated with his brother Riley by his side who is his coach and mentor and has been a huge part of Jai’s journey and success.

Jumping gymnast wows at first Nationals appearance She might only be nine-years-old but Arkie Cheek’s gymnastic talent and skill took her all the way to nationals where she competed among the best, placing fifth of 47 competitors.

Travelling from Montrose to the Gold Coast to compete at the Australian Gymnastics Championships, having won the Victorian State Championships in May, this was Arkie’s first nationals appearance finally hitting the age requirement.

Arkie competed in the women’s level 5 tumbling event, which takes place in an arena with all kinds of gymnastics happening around you.

“It was exciting and also, at the same time, it was nerve-wracking, because you feel that you were not going to do your best, because you’re against the competitors, and going up there, it was terrifying,” Arkie said.

The youngest in her age group, Arkie was competing against 13-year-olds but made it through each of the four rounds, proving her age was no barrier.

Red armband protest reaches Mooroolbark in calls to reverse cuts to gender equity in sport Victorian Government budget cuts to gender equity and inclusion in sport programs saw a collective of sporting teams across the state protest the move in an on-field display of unity.

Joining the red armband protest led by Not All Clubs Media, Mooroolbark Football Club’s senior women each donned two red armbands alongside their opponents Blackburn during their match on Saturday 31 May. The armbands were used to protest the defunding of safety and equity in sport and to honour the 29 women who had been killed by gender-based violence in 2025 until that point.

Senior women’s coach Keryn Ralph said it felt like a responsibility of the club and the team to back the initiative.

“As a social experience, women don’t feel safe.

I coach a team of young women and they’re making their way through a world that can be really unsafe for women,” she said.

A three-year rise for Mooroolbark’s Senior Women The Mooroolbark Mustangs Division Two senior women’s football team capped off an incredible journey in 2025 by not only going through the season undefeated but also securing their third consecutive premiership, this time in Division Two.

Lilydale Swimming Club head coach Duana Mcleod and Kynon headed to Brisbane for the national competition, the first in six years for the club.

“Our team culture and the relationships we have within the team have been everything,” she said.

“Culture creates success, success doesn’t create culture.”

She said the team’s continued improvement has come from learning more about each other as both people and players.

“That’s allowed us to develop real trust and structure. It’s super exciting to be a part of,” Ms Ralph said.

The Mustangs have lost only five games in three years, winning Division Four in 2023, Division Three in 2024, and now Division Two in 2025.

But even with success, challenges remained.

“One of the hardest things this year was maintaining momentum and motivation, the girls have had two great seasons already, and keeping them grounded and focused was really important,” Ms Ralph said.

Mustangs captain Jordyn Doevelaar said the group’s connection made the final triumph even sweeter.

“We couldn’t be more proud of this group, they are such an amazing bunch to lead,” she said.

“For some, it was a three-peat. For others, it was their first grand final win. The emotion and determination across all was fantastic. The support from our families, friends, coaches, support staff and the club was amazing, we all absolutely enjoyed the moment and the celebrations that followed.”

flags in the same year, with the Girls competition having begun in 2017.

Eastern Ranges talent lead Danny Ryan said it was very exciting for the club and the reward for a lot of hard work.

“We talk about the so many layers of support that comes to get into a grand final and we can’t underestimate what the local clubs and the coaches are doing to develop the kids coming through for us and then to have our recruiters that go out every weekend to watch the kids in rain, hail or shine,” he said.

“They’re out watching to see that next group of talent coming through and to our support staff, to the parents, to the kids, it’s really just a great reward for all the hard work and sacrifice.

“To be a part of our program for the players, it’s a huge sacrifice, they’re all trying to balance Year 11 or Year 12, all got part-time jobs and they’re coming in three, four nights a week to train, it’s a huge commitment but the weekend was a great day to celebrate it, especially with both programs winning.”

The girls led early against opponents, the Dandenong Stingrays, and in the last quarter while Dandenong kicked three to reduce the margin, the lead was insurmountable and the Ranges ran away with a 38-point win.

The win marked the Eastern Ranges’ first-ever Girls premiership, having fallen at the final hurdle in both 2023 and 2024.

The Eastern Ranges Boys took the field up against the Sandringham Dragons at 1pm and didn’t have the hot start that the girls did, down by two goals at quarter time 2.1, 13 to 4.1, 25.

The script was flipped in the second quarter as Eastern slammed on six goals to one to hold a three-goal lead at the main break, and rallied in the last to run over the top of the Dragons, keeping their opponents goalless and nailing four goals straight to run out victors by 15 points.

The win was the Ranges’ first Boys Under-18 premiership since the dominant 2013 side.

Making history on and off the field In what could only be labelled a special day in women’s cricket, Mooroolbark Cricket Club’s Jess Adams had a front row seat to the historic match.

More than three years after fleeing Afghanistan as the Taliban swept to power, a women’s team of refugee cricketers played an exhibition match in Melbourne on Thursday 30 January.

Organised by Cricket Australia with support from Cricket Without Borders (CWOB), Adams was selected to play against the Afghanistan XI. “It was pretty special to be able to be involved in something like I was (on Thursday). The match meant a lot more than just a game of cricket,” she said.

“It was awesome that we could be a part of, hopefully, the start of something pretty exciting for the Afghan women’s team and potentially other teams in similar positions across the world.”

For the Afghanistan XI, captained by Nahida Sapan, it was the first time the women have competed as a team since leaving the nation.

Fellow player Firooza Amiri said the weight of the match was not just about representing women’s sport but all women who have been deprived of rights.

“We are extremely happy and we are all feeling very proud,” Amiri told reporters.

Women’s sport was disbanded in the country during the Taliban takeover in August 2021.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had 25 contracted women players in 2020 but most now live in Australia in exile, with others settled in Canada and Britain.

Adams said emotions were running high for everyone involved because of what it took to get there.

“There were definitely lots of mixed emotions across both teams, but especially their team.

Some are celebrating a major milestone but also still grieving, having people still stuck back at home who they can’t see,” she said.

Big wins and losses to end After an inconsistent month of weather, all cricketers took the field for the second last weekend of cricket for 2025, with the Mt Evelyn Cricket Club recording a mixed bag of results.

After a miserable effort against Warranwood last round, the pressure had been heaped upon the Community Bank - Mt Evelyn First XI to make a dramatic turnaround to straighten up their season and fend off relegation. Their first task in redemption is a pair of one-day clashes at home against Vermont and Heatherdale, leading into the Christmas break. Lose both, and relegation is inevitable. Win both, and salvation is possible.

In Round One, the Mounters were desperately close to claiming the win on the road to Vermont, so confidence was high that with a strong showing with both bat and ball that win would be forthcoming. Taking positive action, captain Campbell Mole elected to bat upon winning the toss. Early on, it looked like the Mt Evelyn top order was feeling the effects of some inconsistent form. The top four batters would make useful contributions, but their cautious approach and some disciplined bowling saw the score stalled at 4/103 after 27 overs. A long way off a defendable total. 200 is barely enough at Gary Martin Oval.

Mole, sensing the urgency of the situation, clicked the batting up a few gears. Mole would blister an impressive 79 off 48 with six fours and five sixes, highlighting his innings. His contribution with the middle order ensured the hosts would pass 200 and set a chase of 211 for the Eagles to secure victory. By no means an unattainable total, but one that would take some chasing.

The Mounters would make the ideal start, claiming two early wickets to inject enthusiasm in their fielding efforts, but Vermont would have other ideas. A well-constructed century partnership for the third wicket, and with the run rate rising, the Mounters would do well to hold out the visitors. With the score at 3/162 in the 32nd over, it was Vermont’s game to lose.

Bohdie Jones would take the crucial wicket of Ethan Walker, and the batters would tighten up.

Darcy Fraser, in his recall to the First XI, would turn match-winner, taking four late wickets to cut a swathe through Vermont’s tail. The Mounters’ composure would prove critical in a critical win for the team. When the dust settled, the visitors would be bowled out for 191, 20 runs short of victory.

Despite the victory adding some relief to the First XI’s cause, they would be fully aware that the wins need to keep on coming, and victory against Heatherdale becomes a must. This was unfortunately not the case, with Heatherdale finishing the day on 7/181, 40 runs ahead of the Mounters, who were all out for 141.

The Professionals Outer East Second XI travelled to Wandin for a much anticipated top of the table clash against the Bulldogs. Wandin would ask their visitors to bat first, and early on, it looked to be the right call as the Bulldogs would capture vital early wickets. Adam Smith and Alex Brisbane-Flynn, bitten by their demotion from the First XI would rectify the situation and add some much-needed stability to the innings.

First XI captain Campbell Mole elected to bat against Vermont. attack with a series of crisp boundaries, highlighting an excellent innings of 72 off just 66 balls.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Smith had become the main source of the runs, and his wicket with the score on 103 would have a two-fold effect.

Wickets would fall with regularity and the run rate would slow throughout the middle overs.

Brad Jones (37 not out) and captain Joey Chamberlin (27 not out) would ensure that Smith’s efforts would not go unrewarded as they would put together a run-a-ball 40-run partnership to push the score to a respectable 7/208.

The visitors would soon find out that the score was somewhat under par as the Bulldogs’ openers would put them to the sword. When the first wicket fell, the game was all but over as the hosts raced to 1/134 inside 17 overs. A total obliteration.

The start allowed the host to cruise to the total inside 30 overs with the loss of just three wickets.

The loss is a dent in the Second XI’s progress and a timely reminder that the competition will be a tough one to conquer this season. Yarra Glen will be their final challenge of the year in what now becomes a must-win clash. A win will have them firmly entrenched in the top four, whilst a loss will give those sniffing around the fringes the impetus they will need heading into the new year.

Yarra Glen was just able to outscore the Mounters by a single run to win the last match of 2025. The final score was Yarra Glen 7/198 to Mt Evelyn’s 8/197.

The Rhead Group Third XI had a game they’d rather forget as they were totally outclassed by a slick Warrandyte outfit. Batting first, the Bloods were on the front foot from the outset and took a liking to everything the Mounters could throw at them. The visitors would amass a massive total of 8/289 off their allotted overs at a sprightly eight an over. Captain Graeme Foster would be the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/59, while Alex Whiting was useful with figures of 2/34.

The Mounters bats were totally outclassed in their response to the big total. Darren Westaway (37) and Caleb Doyle (15) would be the only bat-

ters to reach double figures as they were wiped off the park by a dominant Warrandyte team. 116 was all they could muster as they were bowled out in the 24th over.

The loss is a big indicator to the team as to how far they need to improve to bridge the gap on the top couple of teams if they are to challenge for the title. Their immediate challenge is the thirdplaced Coldstream next week at Coldstream. Mt Evelyn was able to get the better of Coldstream for the final round of 2025, finishing up the day on 10/197.

The Hop Hen Fourth XI completed an excellent month of cricket as they eclipsed fellow finals aspirants Ainslie Park in a close encounter at Gracedale Park.

Ainslie would open the contest with the bat and the innings would turn out to be an oldfashioned arm wrestle as neither team could gain ascendancy. Most Ainslie bats would make some sort of contribution, ensuring the scoreboard would tick over, but the Mt Evelyn bowlers would keep it tight, and regular wickets would keep things in check. Eventually, the innings would be closed with the score on 8/151. Craig Steele would be the pick of the bowlers, taking 4/5 over the closing overs to reduce the anticipated total.

Mt Evelyn’s innings would start disastrously as star batsman Lachie Robertson and Jarrod Hartman would be back in the sheds before the score had reached double figures. This left Campbell Manser (38) and Steele (25) the task of cautiously advancing their team into the contest. With the required run rate comfortably attainable, they would nurse the team to the drinks break with little fuss or fanfare.

The wickets of Manser and Steele would give the hosts some hope as they would start to strangle their opposition, but the young pairing of Jake Rigg (29 not out) and Chase Missen (25 not out) would calmly steer the Mounters to victory with an excellent partnership where it could’ve gone pear-shaped for the visitors.

The Fourth XI are now within reach of the top

rungs of the ladder, and a victory against Montrose in the final round of the year will have them well situated for a crack in the second half of the season. The Mounters got the win 10/193.

The Lilydale Tyres Fifth XI hosted Croydon North, and it was the visiting Knights who would put on a clinic against the hapless Mounters. The contest was all but over after the first innings as the visitors would put together a monstrous total of 3/351 on the board. A brutal attack on the small surroundings of the postage stamp. No bowlers were spared as they raced along at nearly 10 an over.

The chase was always going to be a major task to complete, and when you quickly fall to 7/42, you’re cooked. Experienced pairing of Craig Kenins (85) and Leighton Joyce (42), along with a quick-fire unbeaten 31 from young gun Harry Dunstone, would give the score some respectability as the host would stumble to 9/217.

The Fifths have had a more than respectable start to the season, but the big boys of the competition have bullied them. They will look to finish the year in style as they host Wonga Park in a game that will have a big bearing on finals positions. This final match was abandoned, but Mt Evelyn was looking good, with the score recorded at 8/202 to Wonga Park’s 8/169.

The Flowtec Sixth XI continued their run of unrewarded efforts as they were ‘close, but no cigar’ once again. Travelling to Ainslie Park, the Mounters would bat first and would put together a well-constructed innings. Jacdan Mikaelian and Chris Anderson would be cautious up front against some excellent bowling, but the fact that they kept their wickets intact opened the innings up for the Mt Evelyn middle order.

Father-son duo of Luke James (19) and Shane Cantelmi (22) would increase the run rate with a flurry, with Craig Carstens (40) adding the cream to the top to extend the final total to 6/171, a more than respectable total.

The game would turn into a classic as the Mt Evelyn bowlers would stick to their task diligently, whilst the Ainslie bats would keep the run rate in check. Jamie Lee-Archer would do his best to get the Mounters off to a good start, taking 2/9, but wickets would be hard to come by through the middle overs. With the score at 2/106 at the drinks break, it looked as though the Mounters would fall short again.

Tight spells from Elisha Whitelaw, Anderson, James and Merg Mikaelian would give the Mounters a glimmer of hope and when Whitelaw and Anderson would capture three wickets in their return to the bowling crease, it was suddenly game on. Sensing the game was slipping from their grasp, some urgency was required by the Ainslie bats. With some quick running between wickets, the hosts were able to snatch victory with just three balls to spare. A classic match between two evenly matched teams. Whitelaw would have his best outing with the ball, taking 3/19, while Anderson would support him with 2/16.

That does it for the Sixth XI for 2025. Hopefully, they can turn their good form into wins in the new year.

By Les Hutchings Kilsyth Cricket Club’s men’s and junior teams all played one-day matches in the last round before Christmas, resulting in six wins and three losses.

One of the highlights was the Third XI chasing down a target of 252 in 33 overs with Matt Harper scoring 89* off 63 balls, and Anthony Cook 55 off 43 balls. New recruit, Kolitha Hapuarachchi, impressed with 60 off 61 balls for the First XI, while for the U16s, Rhys Kearney smashed 85* off 38 balls and Will Beard 53* off 25 balls. Second XI Captain Justin Smith produced the best bowling figures, taking 4/13 to give his team their first win for the season.

The First XI played against Wonga Park at Alan Smith Oval, Pink Reserve in the Wilkins Cup competition. These two teams met in Round Two when Kilsyth got the points. Kilsyth won the toss and elected to bowl in overcast conditions. The first wicket fell on 27 in the sixth over when Jackson Colledge was well caught at deep mid-wicket

by Jack Childs off the bowling of spinner Kolitha Hapuarachchi, for 15 off 20 balls (three fours).

At the drinks break, the score had progressed to 1/105 off 20 overs with Jackson Ford 62* off 61 balls and Daniel Keane 27* off 39 balls. These two shared a second-wicket partnership of 92 before Keane was bowled in Andy Solomons’ first over after scoring 36 off 50 balls (one four).

With the score now 2/119 off 23 overs, the partnership had laid the foundation for Wonga Park to build a sizeable total. When the score reached 160 in the 32nd over, Jackson Ford was the third wicket to fall, caught behind by ’keeper Will Beard off the bowling of left arm spinner Mackenzie Scott-Thomas. Ford had batted superbly for 87 off 95 balls, including seven boundaries. When Benjamin Mathews was caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Kolitha Hapuarachchi off the bowling of Andy Solomons for 21 off 30 balls (one four), Wonga were 4/178 after 35 overs. Opening bowler Isuru Umesh was recalled into the attack to bowl the 39th over and picked up two wickets in consecutive balls, both bowled, to see Wonga Park 6/199 off 38.4 overs.

Toby Ford was one of the batsmen out for 27 off 26 balls, including three fours. It could have been three wickets in the same over, but unfortunately, a dropped catch on the boundary off the last ball resulted in a six. In the end, Wonga Park finished on 6/222cc off their allotted 40 overs with Thomas Hancock 15* off 12 balls (one six), and Joshua White 16* off 6 balls (one four and one six). The wicket takers for Kilsyth were Isuru Umesh, 2/23 off five overs (one maiden), Andy Solomons 2/34 off eight overs, Kolitha Hapuarachchi 1/30 off six overs, and Mackenzie Scott-Thomas 1/39 off eight overs.

In the run chase, Kilsyth got off to a bad start and after five overs were 3/18. However, Kolitha Hapuarachchi and Pasan Ganegoda steadied the situation with a 63-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Ganegoda was caught in the 17th over by Toby Ford off the bowling of Tyler Parker for 22 off 38 balls (two fours). It was 5/103 in the 23rd over when new recruit, Kolitha Hapuarachchi, was dismissed for an impressive 60 off 61 balls (10 fours). “Koli” was Kilsyth’s standout batsman, combining a good defence with some hard-hitting stroke play. The sixth wicket fell on 118 and the seventh on 149 in the 32nd over when

For Wonga Park, leg spinner Benjamin Mathews took 4/30 off six overs, Ben White 2/20 off four overs (one maiden), Tyler Parker 2/35 off eight overs, and spinner Dylan Mathews 1/16 off four overs (one maiden).

The Second XI also played Wonga Park in an away match at Templestowe Reserve, in the Meehan Shield competition. Kilsyth won the toss and elected to bat. The Redbacks got off to a good start with an opening partnership of 81 in 16.3 overs between Sanjeev Rana and U16 player Rhys Kearney, who made 39 (four fours and one six).

Rana was the next wicket to fall for 37 (four fours), and Kilsyth were now 2/88 off 18.3 overs. Then there was a series of wickets, 3/108, 4/128, and 5/129, when Tim Asbury was bowled in the 32nd over by Jake Guerin for a bright 35 (six fours and one six). Kyan Harper and Lahiru Radeepa then added 63 for the sixth wicket in quick time before Harper was run out for 28 (three fours). Randee-

pa remained 34 not out (three fours and one six) and Kilsyth compiled 6/196cc after 40 overs. For Wonga Park, Lachlan Reynolds took 2/20 off six overs (one maiden), Jake Guerin 2/36 off seven overs, and Cooper Kanally 1/29 off eight overs (one maiden). In reply, Wonga Park were bundled out for 103 in 30.5 overs. Jake Guerin was the best of the batsmen with 29 not out (four fours). For Kilsyth, Captain Justin Smith took the bowling honours with 4/13 off eight overs (one maiden), well supported by leg spinner Kyan Harper, 3/23 off five overs (one maiden), Kyle Galea 1/15 and Michael Sturt 1/16, both off four overs each.

The Third XI (fourth on the ladder) played St Andrews, who were in seventh place, at Roy Baldwin Oval, Pinks Reserve. Kilsyth won the toss and elected to bowl. However, St Andrews made the most of the situation, and after being 1/46 and 2/71, a third wicket partnership of 142 between Captain Rohan Smith and Ryan Trowsdale saw the Saints 3/213 off 35.2 overs. At that point, Rohan Smith was well caught one-handed by Mark Sfiligoj at square leg off the bowling of Matt Harper for a brilliant 120 off 99 balls (14 fours and four sixes). The Saints went on to score an imposing

3/251cc off their 40 allotted overs. Ryan Trowsdale was 68* off 90 balls (eight fours), and Matt Sutherland 26* off 17 balls (two fours and two sixes). The single wicket takers for Kilsyth were Tait Harper 1/25, Matt Harper 1/40, and Mark Unternahrer 1/45.

After the tea break, Kilsyth set about the run chase in a positive manner. The first wicket put on 81 in 10.2 overs when Ben Nicoll was caught and bowled for 23 off 25 balls (five fours). It was 2/93 off 12.1 overs when fellow opener Anthony Cook was out for a quick fire 55 off 43 balls (11 fours and one six). When Steve Galea was out for 18 off 17 balls (two fours and one six), Kilsyth were 3/104 off 14.3 overs and on track with the required run rate. Then, Captain Robert Hutchings joined Matt Harper, and they kept the momentum going before Hutchings was caught behind for 22 off 18 balls (four fours), with the Redbacks now 4/155 in the 22nd over. When the fifth wicket fell on 194 after 25.1 overs, Kilsyth were within striking distance, with Matt Harper on 55*. He and Mark Sfiligoj then took the Redbacks to 5/254 and victory in 33 overs. Mark Sfiligoj was 15* off 23 balls (three fours) and Matt Harper, who played a magnificent match-winning innings, was 89* off 63 balls (11 fours and five sixes). For St Andrews, Dave Rechsteiner captured 3/44 and Ryan Catterall 2/69, both off eight overs each. It was a most entertaining match for spectators, with 506 runs being scored in 73 overs for the loss of eight wickets.

The Fourth XI played Mooroolbark at Kiloran Park. Kilsyth won the toss and elected to bat. The Redbacks lost regular wickets and were all out for 124 in 24 overs. The top run getters were Jordan Relf, who scored 32 off 18 balls (four fours and two sixes), and Pieter Van Gent 29 off 28 balls (six fours). Mooroolbark’s multiple wicket takers were Kyle Larsen, 3/1 off one over, and Justin Barrand 3/32 off seven overs (two maidens). Mooroolbark chased down the target in 21 overs, finishing on 3/128. Kyden Neal was 51* off 43 balls (three fours and four sixes), and Lochlan Stewart 44* off 47 balls (six fours and one six), whilst opener Camdyn Jones chipped in with 23 off 24 balls (three fours and one six). Jordan Relf was the sole wicket taker for Kilsyth with 3/32 off seven overs (one maiden) to complete a good all-round game.

The Fifth XI do not resume playing until Saturday 10 January 2026.
