Treasuring trees

By Tyler Wright Local organisation Treasuring Our Trees is establishing projects in the Hills after launching its Lilydale showroom in December last year.

Founder David Ferrier is currently working with salvaged timber to create an outdoor oasis for Olinda Primary School students upon their return in term two.

Mr Ferrier said he is preparing to get “really creative” over the school holidays, building fairy houses, a yarning circle and kitchen garden beds for students out of recycled timber, with storm-effected Mount Dandenong Preschool also able to enjoy the project while using the primary school’s facilities.

“The yarning circle is an opportunity for the children and educators and family to sit around and talk and share,” Mr Ferrier said.

“We’ll be building [garden beds] for the students of the Olinda Primary School directly so that they can develop and set up their own kitchen garden program.”

It comes as Treasuring Our Trees completes works at Wandin North Primary School, building a bush tucker garden and wooden shop front for the school.

“I’ve been working seven days a week on developing this program for the best part of 20 months, we did a whole lot of volunteering initially, but then we started to connect with councils and state government to salvage [timber],” Mr Ferrier said.

“This is a heartwarming story and goes a long way to playing a part in the healing of both land and community.”

Mr Ferrier is also set to complete projects at Sassafras Primary School, Mount Dandenong Primary School and Emerald Primary School in coming months.

I’ll go back maybe three, four or five times, get to know the schools and the principals and find out about what their wants and needs are,” Mr Ferrier said.

“Emerald Primary School apparently have about 500 students, and we’re building them an amazing black wood boardroom meeting table, and we’re also building them a blackwood display cabinet.

“Mount Dandenong Primary School have got a portable kitchen in an old shipping con-

tainer... directly opposite the kitchen garden, so what they’ve asked from us is to make them a beautiful, really long blackwood kitchen bench top.”

Mr Ferrier said building community projects out of salvaged wood sends a “really strong message”.

“After the June 9 ‘21 storm a lot of people were in shock. It was like a cyclone...what played a part in the trauma was what looked like hundreds of truckloads of logs leaving the hills and ranges.”

“It’s really important to educate communities right around Australia after natural disasters by building these functional and practical, land based, playful environments.”

In May, Treasuring Our Trees will hold a second opening with Indigenous storytellers and the University of Melbourne’s Dr Greg Moore discussing disaster preparedness.

“I’m building partnerships on behalf of our board, with local and state government authorities all around Victoria now, and honestly, this is just the beginning,” Mr Ferrier said.

MP will consult on Voice

By Parker McKenzie Casey MP Aaron Violi will engage with the community before making a decision on whether to support a yes or no vote ahead of the referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, despite the Liberal Party announcing it would officially campaign for a no vote.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced the party wouldn’t support a campaign to constitutionally enshrine an Indigenous Voice to Parliament at the upcoming referendum on Wednesday 5 April, but Mr Violi said he hasn’t yet reached a final position on a personal level, which is his “right as a Liberal backbencher.”

“I’m continuing to engage with the community here in Casey, and that involves working with an organisation called DemocracyCo, with forums and public dialogue because I’ve received a range of views,” he said.

“I want to engage in that process and understand more about what our community is feeling.”

Shadow-cabinet members are bound to support the Liberal Party’s position, which is to support constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians and local and regional bodies for Indigenous representation but oppose a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parlia-

ment, but backbenchers are free to make their own decision on the referendum.

Mr Violi said recognising Indigenous Australians in the constitution is an important symbolic step that the Liberal Party is supporting.

“It’s important to note that we have agreed to support the bill through the House to ensure that Australians do have their say, which I believe is very important because ultimately this is a decision for the Australian people,” he said.

“We are saying yes to constitutional recognition and we are calling for local and regional bodies to be legislated for and included in the model, which is also one of the recommendations of the Calma-Langton report that the Prime Minister himself has referenced.”

The Final Report of the Indigenous Voice Co-design Process was produced by Tom Calma and Marcia Langton, commonly referred to as the Langton-Calma Report, and is the result of 18 months of consultation with people and organisations about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Mr Violi said he passionately believes that local and regional voices are “one of the key things that will actually make a difference in closing the gap.”

“The challenges that an Indigenous community face in the Northern Territory or in central far North Queensland are different challenges and issues to the Indigenous communities in Healesville or elsewhere,” he said.

The referendum on an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice, an election commitment from the Labor Government at the 2022 federal election, will occur between October and December 2023.

Australians will vote either yes or no on the following question: “A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?”

Senior lecturer in Political Theory and Global Politics at Monash University Dr Paul Muldoon said the Liberal Party had been preparing the ground for its no position for some time, by repeatedly asking the government for more details.

“Asking questions and holding power to account is the job of a responsible opposition and constitutional amendment should not be taken lightly,” he said.

“But Dutton’s dismissal of the Voice to Parliament as the Canberra Voice is a cynical move that leads one to doubt whether he was

ever really that interested in the details or concerned about the principles at stake.”

He said if the referendum is carried in the absence of bipartisan support, it will be a truly historic moment for Australia and a reckoning for the Liberal Party.

Mr Violi said he was finalising the details for the next steps of his community consultation regarding town halls, surveys and listening posts throughout the Casey electorate, before deciding his final position on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

“As a backbencher, we do have that freedom and I’m continuing to engage with the community here in Casey because ultimately, it’s about the Australian people and not parliamentarians or politicians deciding this vote,” he said.

“A symbolic gesture of constitutional recognition is very important, but tangible action to close the gap and improve the lives of indigenous Australians is equally important.”

The electoral division of Casey covers the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges, including Belgrave, Chirnside Park, Healesville, Lilydale, Monbulk, Mooroolbark, Mount Evelyn, Mount Dandenong, Olinda, Tecoma, Upwey, Warburton and Yarra Glen.

Throughout its existence, the couple’s sons Paul, Joseph, Ross, Frank and Philip have all worked at the market, which has seen a lot of change over the years.

Mr Pellegrino said originally it was an arts and craft market and was far busier than it is today.

“People don’t seem to have the same appreciation for handmade stuff as much to-

day,” he said.

“Now it’s the same as every market.”

Pellegrino’s Fresh Fruits still has a shop at 8 Sunset Avenue Olinda, where the 3rd generation of the family still operates the business alongside Ms and Mr Pellegrino.

“We all get along,” Ms Pellegrino said.

“Though sometimes we are still teaching them to let them know who the real boss is.”

Pellegrino’s Fresh Fruits has called time on their stall at the Upper Ferntree Gully Market after 47 years and many great memories for the family business.

Tony Pellegrino, who took over the business from his father, said the entire family wanted to thank everyone who had shopped at the stall over the years.

“We enjoyed the weekends, the really nice customers who came in every weekend regardless of the weather,” he said.

Every Saturday, and for a period both days on the weekend, Pellegrino’s Fresh Fruits spent three hours setting up their market stall in the morning, all day at the market, before taking three hours to pack it down.

Katrina Pellegrino said the family had made lifelong friends at the market, even attending the weddings of customers with who they forged a bond.

“We just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone. Whether they were $1 customers or $100 customers, they all meant a lot,” she said.

“Sometimes it was really slow, sometimes you weren’t making a lot of money, but that wasn’t the point,” Mr Pellegrino added.

“You just nice people come down, and you’d see the same people every week.”

Staffing issues have been the biggest reason for the decision to end their lifelong association with the market.

RBA on rate pause

By Parker McKenzie The Reserve Bank of Australia today hit a pause on interest rate rises after 11 consecutive increases.

After a meeting of the RBA board on Tuesday 4 April, RBA governor Philip Lowe said the decision to not increase the cash rate follows an increase of 3.5 percentage points since May 2022.

“The Board took the decision to hold interest rates steady this month to provide additional time to assess the impact of the increase in interest rates to date and the economic outlook,” he said.“The Australian banking system is strong, well-capitalised and highly liquid.

It is well placed to provide the credit that the economy needs.”

He said a range of indicators, including the monthly consumer price index indicator, suggest inflation has peaked in Australia.

“Goods price inflation is expected to moderate over the months ahead due to global developments and softer demand in Australia.

Meanwhile, rents are increasing at the fastest rate in some years, with vacancy rates low in many parts of the country,” Mr Lowe said.

“There is further evidence that the combination of higher interest rates, cost-of-living pressures and a decline in housing prices is leading to a substantial slowing in household spending.”

The cash rate represents the interest rate on unsecured overnight loans between banks and serves as the benchmark rate for mortgages, savings accounts and exchange rates.

The rate reprieve elicited different responses.

“With the rising cost of fuel, groceries, gas and electricity, this reprieve is just what many borrowers needed to be able to keep up with their repayments,” he said.

“Especially considering a person with a $500,000 mortgage is already paying more than $1,000 more each month than they were at the start of May 2022.”

National housing campaign Everybody’s Home spokesperson Maiy Azize said rent-

ers won’t get a break from the soaring cost of housing.

“Renters have been feeling the pain of rising costs for years, with rents surging even when landlords were benefiting from record low-interest rates,” she said.

“We have been seeing huge rent increases every year for far longer than we’ve been seeing interest rate rises. But while interest rates have become a political crisis, politicians have not been made to answer for the fact that rents have gone up by $6,000 in the last three years alone.”

Knox City Council will be providing free flu vaccines to eligible people, including children and seniors. People eligible for the free vaccines are children aged six months up to four years and 11 months old, seniors aged 65 or older, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people, pregnant women or people at least six months old with a medical condition that may increase the risk of flu complications. Knox City Council said evidence may be requested to receive the flu vaccination and its Health Services team will advise you before your appointment.

“We are running dedicated flu sessions between mid-April to June 2023. After June, flu bookings can be made in our general immunisation sessions,” the council said.

Mr Schroder said the incident was the brigade’s second extrication job this week.

“We had one on Sunday of very similar distance, about 50 metres.. we had a motorbike rider up on Mount Bride Road [in Warburton], and he left the road on his motorbike and was injured.

“We had the same rope system, brought him up to the road and he was flown out by ambulance.

“I can’t reiterate how much of an inter agency response this was between VicPol and CFA and SES... we all worked really well in together and great teamwork and camaraderie to good outcomes.”

Bus stop assault

Police are investigating after a man was assaulted at a Bus stop in Ferntree Gully on 4 March.

At around 1.40pm, a 27-year-old man was standing with friends on the corner of Burwood Highway and Westley Street at a bus stop. Police said it is believed a black Holden Commodore pulled over and an unknown man got out of his car and punched the victim in the face, before fleeing the scene.

The Ferntree Gully man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have released an image of what the man may look like and detectives are asking any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to come forward.

A motorist avoided being trapped in her car after a vehicle drove 50 metres off BelgraveGembrook Road in Menzies Creek on Thursday 6 April.

CFA crews were called to the accident just before 11.30am, with SES, Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police and FRV working on a high angle rescue to bring the patient back up the hill.

Monbulk Fire & Rescue Brigade captain Simon Schroder said the driver was “extremely” lucky to have avoided large trees along the embankment.

“She’s missed every tree and power pole on the way down 50 metres of bush... there were some significant trees that were missed,” Mr Schroder said.

“Threaded the needle, we might say.”

According to a CFA spokesperson, the patient wasn’t trapped, but had received injuries.

Youth on their minds

By Parker McKenzie The Rotary Club of Ferntree Gully has received $112,665 from the Knox Empowering Communities Program to run a social inclusion program focused on youth engagement.

Alongside other Knox-based Rotary Clubs, the program will see volunteers and youth support workers provide opportunities for young people aged 12 to 18 who are isolated or disengaged to participate and connect with each other in a safe environment.

Rotary Club of Fern Tree Gully President Christine Anderson said the clubs throughout Knox run several strong youth programs, starting with primary school students all the way through to high school.

“After a long process, we’ve got this particular grant to run a 12-month pilot program starting in July this year,” she said.

“Every fortnight, we will have young people come along alongside specialised youth working running the program.”

Throughout the Knox Nocturnal Youth Group, young people will have access to hot meals, life skills workshops, sporting activities and other educational activities covering drugs to antisocial behaviour.

Mr Anderson said children are the future of society, which is why the Rotary Club decided to apply for a grant to help them.

“That’s the reason why we wanted to do something with the youth.”

The Knox Empowering Communities projects are funded by the Victorian Government’s Empowering Communities initiative as part of the Building Safer Communities Program.

Ms Anderson said the program will be evaluated at the end of the pilot period by the Department of Justice.

“If this program is successful, it has to be sustainable which is what the Rotary Club is

working on,” she said.

“If we see it as a reasonable success in what we’re trying to achieve, then later in the year we will form a committee to look at funding to continue it.”

Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place also received a $20,000 grant through the Knox Empowering Communities program to focus on connecting the First Nations community within the local area at their new home of HV Jones Community Room, while running public events to help connect and increase cultural understanding.

Off-peak visitors in for a ‘light’ treat

By Tyler Wright The peak tourism body in the Yarra Ranges is looking to draw more visitors to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges in off-peak periods through the installation of two new immersive light experiences.

The dam wall at Maroondah Reservoir Park in Healesville and the Sir Alfred Nicholas Gardens in Sherbrooke are pinned as two potential locations for Yarra Ranges Tourism’s LightUp Nature into Art (LUNA) project.

Yarra Ranges Tourism CEO Simon O’Callaghan said the organisation has conducted global research on best practise models for night time attractions that can emphasise or benefit from natural based environments for light experiences.

“Interestingly, one of the things we found was that both sites were always planned to be activated in some form in the night, they just never reached that stage with their development,” Mr O’Callaghan said.

Lightscape at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Moama Lights and the Gertrude Street Projection Festival are some recent local examples of similar projects.

With a community survey now available to the public, Mr O’Callaghan said Yarra Ranges Tourism will conduct testing on the sites as part of its business case to determine how to establish the installations as a seasonal or ongoing attraction.

“We know there’s not enough night time activities for people to do, both locals and visitors,” Mr O’Callaghan said.

“We’re taking into heavy consideration the environmental impacts of these types of activities and how we need to be conscious of local fauna that’s in each of those sites, and we’re looking at technology that wouldn’t interfere with their behaviours.”

Once the business case is completed which Mr O’Callaghan expects to be by the end of June 2023 - Yarra Ranges Tourism will discuss budget options with the state government to get the project off the ground.

“We’ve already seen some good results in other creative industries that have had support from the government, so we’d anticipate that there’ll be a favourable response, but we can’t be too sure at this stage.”

Sherbrooke’s Alfred Nicholas Gardens is another proposed location for visitors and locals to immerse themselves in a sensory experience.

Station in the works Commuters in Melbourne’s east will soon find it easier to park, catch the train and travel – with works underway on the new multi-level car park at Belgrave Station.

Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll and Monbulk Daniela De Martino visited the site on Tuesday 4 April to see how the works are progressing.

“Belgrave Station is at the end of the line and attracts passengers from surrounding suburbs – so this project will provide a huge benefit,” Ms De Martino said.

“We thank the community for their patience while works progress on the new car park and we’re excited to see it open to the public later this year.”

The car park will see 640 parking spaces built across four-levels, which will also include 16 accessible spaces, lifts and new and upgraded bicycle facilities. Lighting and CCTV will also be installed to improve safety for passengers.

An undercover pick-up and drop off area will also be delivered as part of the project, along with road widening to improve access to the car park, a new bus priority exit lane and bus priority signals at the roundabout.

Around three quarters of the car park structure are now complete, with construction underway to install the car park’s façade.

Passengers who usually park at Belgrave Station have been using a temporary car park at Upwey High School, within walking distance to Upwey Station, while works continue to build the new car park.

The car park is being delivered by VicTrack as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s Car Parks for Commuters Program and is scheduled for completion later this year.

VicTrack has appointed ADCO to design and construct the car park following a tender process.

Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll said the new multi-level car park at Belgrave Station will make catching the train easier and safer for commuters in Melbourne’s east.

“Once the new car park is complete, people will find it much easier to park, catch the train and travel so they can get to where they need to go,” Mr Carroll said.

Future funding for archive

By Parker McKenzie The National Library of Australia’s research portal, Trove, has received a $33 million injection from the federal government, confirming its future and saving the valuable resource for researchers, academics, historians and journalists.

In January, the Star Mail reported that the National Library had stated that without additional funding, the Library would have been forced to cease offering the Trove service entirely, which gives free access to over 6 billion historical items like newspaper clips, birth and death records, magazines, books letters, music and audio from around 900 Australian institutions.

On Tuesday 3 April, Minister for Arts Tony Burke announced the National Library will receive $33 million in funding across four years in the next budget.

Mr Burke said Trove is in many ways Australia’s digital memory.

“It records and retains some of our most important stories, moments, challenges, controversies and successes in one accessible location,” he said.

“Whether you’re using it to look up a bit of family history, or for academic research, Trove is an incredibly important part of our national cultural institutions.”

The government is also providing $9.2 million in indexed ongoing annual funding.

Mr Burke said the funding will help restore and maintain the strong cultural infrastructure after the previous Coalition government decided that Trove funding would end on 30 June 2023.

“It takes us a step closer to ending the budget cuts and culture wars of the previous government,” he said.

In the past, Knox City Council and Yarra Ranges Council care grants, Public Records Office Victoria grants and community fundraising has uploaded 35 years’ worth of copy from five local newspapers to Trove.

Digitise Knox and Dandenong Ranges News’ Wayne Hodges said it is fantastic news that the Albanese Government has responded to public support for Trove by providing it ongoing funding into the future.

Fleming’s nurseries helping to boost garden industry

By Tyler Wright Monbulk’s Fleming’s Nurseries is looking to take on five new staff members as part of the state government’s Jobs Victoria Nursery Workforce Project.

The opening of applications for the $1.9 million program was announced on Tuesday 4 April at the fourth generation family-owned wholesale business.

The project will see people placed into roles including retail assistants, truck drivers, process workers and production line assistants.

For Fleming’s Nurseries, successful applicants will step into entry level positions as part of the dispatch team or as a nursery hand.

“We found it difficult to find staff over the last couple of years; firstly Covid, and secondly, the post-Covid workforce seems to be quite limited at the moment,” Fleming’s Nurseries’ general manager Daniel Jansen said.

“For us, it’s about attracting people that want to work in the nursery industry and giving them a start in their horticultural career.

“What we can provide for people is long term job security and career progression… just because someone starts as a nursery hand doesn’t mean that that’s where they finish.”

As one of the larger nurseries in the country, Mr Jansen said Fleming’s offers the opportunity for a life-long career in roles including supervisor, manager or related roles in agronomy and inventory control.

The Jobs Victoria Nursery Workforce Project will provide workers with both pre-employment and on-the-job training in an attempt to boost skills and create an inclusive workforce community.

Recruits are guaranteed work for 12 months, receiving pre-employment and onthe-job training, mentoring support and a workplace buddy.

The program will also prioritise jobs for people needing additional support to find work; including people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, young people, women over 45 and those who are long-term unemployed.

There may also be opportunities to undertake free and formal qualifications.

Students inspire on trek

By Shelby Brooks A primary school principal will take strength and inspiration from three of her students when she walks The Kokoda Track this month.

Cockatoo Primary School principal Darrelyn Boucher is raising money for Down Syndrome Victoria, in honour of past students Charlotte and Josh, and current student Ollie, as she prepares for the Anzac Day trek in Papua New Guinea.

Although Darrelyn has done many significant hikes in the past- The Overland Track, Himalayas and Machu Picchu- she realised The Kokoda Track was going to be a lot tougher.

“When I read that this was in the top 10 most difficult hikes in the world I started to have doubts as to whether I could do it or not,” she said.

“Then I thought, ‘I’m going to need some inspiration, I’m going to need more than just my stubborn bloody minded streak to get my across the finish line’.

“I love what I do and being with kids all day and then having special people in our world who really did affect the way we work at our school, brought Charlotte, Josh and Ollie to mind.”

Darrelyn said Charlotte, Josh and Ollie had made a huge impact on Cockatoo Primary School over the years.

“They are just a gift, they are just joyful kids, they are so natural and honest and embrace everything,” she said.

“We’ve learnt from them that there is no difference, they are just one of our Cockatoo family.

“They are treated like everyone else, the inclusion that our kids display day after day is totally overwhelming.”

Darrelyn said the acceptance shown by all students at Cockatoo Primary School was down to the “phenomenal staff”.

Pride in their work: Emerald employees applauded Employees from Emerald and surrounding businesses have been recognised for their efforts at a bi-annual Rotary awards night.

The Pride of Workmanship Awards, held Tuesday 28 March by the Rotary Club of Emerald and District, was the first one since 2018 due to the impact of Covid-19.

The ceremony was held at the Puffing Billy Centre at Emerald Lake in Emerald, with additional support from the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Business and Tourism Association led by Lynne Trensky.

The Pride of Workmanship event recognises those in the business community who have demonstrated outstanding performance in the work they do in their local business roles with the underlying theme being ‘do it once – do it well’.

It enables employers to publicly recognise staff who display outstanding qualities in their role and encourages positive employer/employee relationships and a sense of community pride in individual achievement.

Emerald Rotary Club hands over $50,000 from fun run

By Parker McKenzie The Rotary Club of Emerald and District’s annual fun run raised over $50,000 for Monash Children’s Hospital last December, with rotary members meeting with hospital staff on Wednesday 29 April to hand over the funds and have a tour of the facilities.

Emerald Rotary president Marcus Adams said all the club’s members felt privileged to be able to contribute something so meaningful to the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre.

“We know what great support we have from sponsors and the kids that participate and the families,” he said.

“It was just a perfect day. A lot of kids, in particular in the older age groups, came out to support it because we haven’t had the run for a 6 MAIL

number of years.”

He said the event is an iconic one for the local area that has been supported by local primary schools.

“This event has been running since 2002 and has raised over $720,000 for children’s causes,” Mr Adams said.

“It’s not a surprise now that everyone is so supportive.”

The Rotary Club’s Kids Fun Run chairperson John Henderson said after two years of Covid, there was concern about whether people would turn up.

“It all went really well and people came back in large numbers, making it a huge success,” he said.

“We’ve donated to the Monash Children’s

Hospital for the past three years and luckily we’ve been able to donate nearly $150,000 to them.”

Mr Henderson thanked all the sponsors for the event, including Puffing Billy Railway Station, Emerald Mitre 10 and Barry Plant, and Ferntree Gully Nissan among others.

“We are definitely grateful for their support and the support of the local community that came out and supported such a worthy cause,” he said.

“We’ve already started planning for this year’s event and we hope to match the $50,000, if not beat it.”

EACH welcomes new clinic

By Mikayla van Loon Ringwood East will be home to the first and only endometriosis and pelvic pain service in the outer east, catering to women across the Yarra Ranges.

The announcement came from the Federal government in late March that 20 clinics would be established Australia wide as part of the $58.3 million budget promise.

Victoria will have a total of four clinics, with EACH Community Health facilitating the service at its health hub in Ringwood East.

“The fact that the Clinic is local removes barriers around commuting into highly congested areas like hospitals or the inner city,” an EACH spokesperson said.

“It will be conveniently located across from Ringwood East station and has ample parking, making it a central location that will improve the care experience for women.”

The service will add to the already offered Sexual and Reproductive Health program to ensure women receive the holistic care they need.

It is estimated that roughly 830,000 women are living with the condition around the country, with more perhaps undiagnosed.

“We know that women living with endometriosis experience debilitating symptoms that can be lifelong. This service will provide specialised person-centred care that will ensure women can manage their symptoms and lead full, healthy lives,” EACH CEO Natalie Sullivan said.

While EACH already provided care to women with endometriosis and pelvic pain, having a specified clinic allows them to expand that range even further.

“We had about half a dozen enquiries on the day the government announced this funding, so we anticipate high demand for the service,” the spokesperson said.

EACH Ringwood East will be the home of a new endometriosis and pelvic pain clinic.

The Federal government will contribute $700,000 over four years to each of the clinics, to support the hiring of specialised staff, whether it be nurse practitioners and/or allied health professionals.

It will also support the purchasing of equipment or fit-outs such as pelvic physiotherapy areas, as well as resources, training and development.

“This funding acknowledges the devastating effect these conditions can have on women’s lives. Now, women can know they don’t have to suffer alone - support is available.”

Health and Aged Care assistant minister Ged Kearney said it had been a long and hard fought battle by activists and women to see real change when it comes to women’s health.

“Too many women suffer for years with what we know can be debilitating conditions.

They deserve to have their concerns be taken seriously with better access to specialised care,” Ms Kearney said.

“These Clinics are about providing women with an accessible front door to the care that they need.

“Gathering expertise under one roof, fostering that knowledge to improve diagnosis and services, and having referral pathways in place – these are all crucial elements to getting the support that women need right.”

Getting support as soon as possible, Ms Sullivan said is integral to early diagnosis and better outcomes, something this clinic will provide when opened in a few months.

“Our multidisciplinary team includes specialist GPs who work with affected women to develop a personalised treatment plan that can integrate a broader range of support from nurses, physiotherapists, health psychologists and other allied health professionals for pain management.

“Living with a chronic condition can be crippling. However, with the right care and support, women with endometriosis can manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.”

CFA gears up to sell

By Parker McKenzie Upwey CFA will hold its jumble sale on Saturday 6 May, allowing locals to score a bargain or give their possessions a second home ahead of the event.

The once-a-year tradition, which has unfortunately been curtailed since the Covid-19 pandemic began, will be held at the Upwey Fire Station at 134 Old Belgrave Road, Upwey from 9am to 2pm.

Upwey CFA brigade captain Cliff Pancutt said the Jumble Sale has been held for over 50 years and the brigade is asking people to donate clean, working items to sell during the event.

“This is our first since 2019 due to Covid shutting everything down. It’s been widely anticipated by the community, people have been reaching out to us all the time as to when it was coming back,” he said.

“It’s great to be able to put it on again and continue holding one of the largest and longest-running sales for the area.”

A raffle and an all-day BBQ will be held at the Fire Station throughout the Jumble Sale, with all proceed to go towards Upwey CFA. Mr Pancutt said the Jumble Sale is the largest source of fundraising for the brigade.

“We’re very fortunate that the community has allowed us to fund three response vehicles, we have a specialist light vehicle, we have a smaller tanker and we also have a new support vehicle.”

Mr Pancutt said the brigade considers itself very lucky to have community support because the vast majority of fundraising goes back into replacing those vehicles.

“All of those vehicles are now on a 20-year replacement program, so when you’ve got vehicles that cost the amount they do, it’s extremely important that we hold fundraising

events to be able to maintain that community service,” he said.

“It’s also the one time a year where the brigade members can have a chat with the community as they come through, and it’s something that builds a great rapport between the community and us.”

Items that can’t be donated include corner TV cabinets, large TV cabinets, renovation materials, whitegoods, beds, bedding, mattresses, clothing, carpets/rugs, blinds, sofa beds, older and heavy-style lounge suites, non-digital TVs or TVs without remotes, old computers, rusty or old barbecues, wheels and tyres, radiograms, speakers, singular office or kitchen chairs, child car seats, prams, videotapes, encyclopaedias, magazines, bags, backpacks or suitcases.

Mr Pancutt said the brigade is after good quality items that people want to move along and donate to help fundraise.

“Things that would otherwise have gone on the hard rubbish collection, probably need to go on the hard rubbish collection,” he said.

“People want to come and buy some good quality gear and get a bargain.”

Gembrook RSL president is an old hand

By Tyler Wright Gembrook RSL president Norm Smith is the oldest RSL president in the state, turning 90 on 8 May. Mr Smith said he was elected president at a recent committee meeting.

“My father was a member of the Gembrook RSL before the Second World War, where he died in a prison of war camp” Mr Smith said.

“It’s great for me to be a member of the Gembrook RSL now and president for the memory of my father.”

Mr Smith began his involvement at the Gembrook RSL at the age of 13 in 1946, following in his father’s footsteps.

“They had their marches, and mum always made sure that we attended all the marches and anything that we could do to help out, because mum was on the RSL auxiliary during the war,” Mr Smith said.

“She was out selling raffle tickets and did whatever she could do for the war effort, and then we followed from there.”

After completing national service in 1952, Mr Smith became an official member of the Gembrook RSL in the mid ‘70s; assuming roles including treasurer and committee member 8 MAIL

Mr Smith said the local RSL sub-branch and the Gembrook-Cockatoo Football and Netball

Club have had a long standing relationship, with players on the RSL committee.

“They used to have wood chops, sometimes on Easter, sometimes on New Year’s Day, they always combine together,” he said.

“Some returned men living in Gembrook in ‘46 played football...when the soldier settlers come to Gembrook they combined in with the football club.”

Mr Smith said member numbers at the RSL sub-branch are increasing in 2023, with new people moving into the town who did not know the building existed.

“It’s been here since the mid 50s (the new building).

“They used the memorial hall before that, when the soldier settlers came they had more members and they raised enough funds to buy the block of land and build their RSL club rooms.”

Born and bred in the area, Mr Smith said he has taken an interest in everything involving Gembrook throughout the years.

“I’ve always put my heart and soul into it,” he said.

“I’m really pleased the way that all the [RSL] members appreciate what I’m doing.”

An Anzac Day dawn service will be held in the Ferntree Gully Quarry on Tuesday 25 April, honouring servicemen and women who have given their lives to protect Australia.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Fern Tree Gully and Ferntree Gully CFA, the Dawn Service asks people to attend at 5.45am for a 6pm start.

Rotary Club of Fern Tree Gully President Christine Anderson said she was blown away by the reception to last year’s ANZAC Day service.

“There were a couple of things when we debriefed afterwards that we were going to improve on because we weren’t expecting as many people as there were,” she said.

“Hopefully we’ll just get the same number of people or as many as we possibly can again this year.”

Former Knox City Mayor Karin Orpen OAM will be the master of ceremonies, while Chris Warwick and Rohan Laing will do readings at the event and the anthem will be lead by St Josephs College Choir.

Ferntree Gully CFA Captain Seamus Smith said last year’s event, the first since before the Covid-19 pandemic, had fantastic attendance by the local community.

“It was probably in the vicinity of 800 people and this year we’re expecting similar numbers, if not more,” he said.

“The weather was perfect last year on the morning and it was a fitting service and commemorative event to mark the occasion.”

Those in attendance should bring a torch and a chair if needed, and pedestrian access is via Quarry Road.

Parking is available in Ferntree Gully Village and Upper Ferntree Gully Railway Station, and local traders will again open their doors early for people to enjoy breakfast after the service.

Mr Smith said it is important to bring people together to remember what happened, and the sacrifice by those who went and fought for the rights we currently have and the lives we live.

“It’s extremely important we don’t forget that, and we come together and recognise it,” Mr Smith said.

“We’ve had plenty of support from local groups who also want to be involved with laying reef and trying to be part of it.”

He thanked Ray White for providing advertising for the event and Peter Piro for providing the sound system.

Emerging artist Transcends learned how to make wire sculptures, because otherwise life is too easy,” Natasja said.

“I wire sculpted wings. For the very first time in my life, I actually learned how to solder.

“With a hope and a prayer, I started sewing around and quilting around these wings, and wonder by wonder, they actually went up.”

Despite the creative “roller coaster,” Natasja said it has been “truly amazing” seeing the finished work and the smiles on viewer’s faces.

“I’ve got a lot of people coming into Burrinja just to take a photo in front of the colourful wings that I’ve made, “ she said.

Collecting most of her textiles from local op shops - including the Kilsyth op shop ‘trifecta’ - Natasja said her work is “very colourful”.

“I have severe PTSD. I used to live in South Africa and I used to be an attorney there, so it helps me to have a form of meditation and that keeps my panic attacks at bay,” she said.

She also said she feels quilting should get a younger audience.

“It’s an extremely expensive hobby... if you have to have a $4,000 sewing machine, that’s a completely different ball game. You don’t need that; you can buy a sewing machine from an op shop, and anybody can quilt,” she said.

“Don’t let the rules of quilting stop you.

By Tyler Wright Belgrave local Natasja van Wyk started began quilting as an art form emerging out of the state’s lockdown period.

“I call it ‘Rage Quilting’, when I realise I’m on the verge of a panic attack, it is my escape is going into my quilting, my sewing room and just creating,” Natasja said.

“I do quilting, but without the geometric straight lines, so you’ll find that none of my quilts have any straight lines because I try to rebel against the quilt police.”

Natasja has been quilting as a hobby since 2012, but recently decided she wanted to express that visual art could also be textile art.

“I went to a quilt show last year, I did volunteer duty there and I actually heard some of the older quilters say, ‘oh, you can’t do that because that wasn’t done with proper cotton’, and that saddened me because I know that the quilting community wants younger people to get involved, but you’re never going to have that if you make it unobtainable by younger people.”

From then on, Natasja started creating landscape artworks and distorting the images into abstract realities. It was these landscape works that got Natasja noticed by Burrinja Cultural Centre; where she was sponsored for three months to operate a pop up space at Burrinja’s Aerie studios throughout Burrinja’s 2023 Open Studios program.

Holiday art fun to be had The Emerald Community House is excited to announce its upcoming school holiday art workshops for children aged eight to 16 years.

These workshops will be held over a two-week period and will offer morning and afternoon classes to provide flexibility for parents and guardians. With four classes to choose from, there is something for every child’s interest and creative ability.

The Pottery Making workshop will offer children the chance to create functional monster mugs using stoneware clay. These mugs will not only be unique and personal to each

participant, but they will also be glazed with a clear food-safe gloss glaze on the inside. Children will also have the opportunity to create Cactus Flower pots, which will be glazed and fired shiny, perfect for adding some greenery to their rooms.

For those interested in glass art, the Glass Fusion workshop will allow participants to make glass coasters and pendants using the glass fusion technique. Each child will be able to create their own design, adding a personal touch to their creations.

The Ceramic-Porcelain Jewellery workshop

will teach children the technique of decorating with decal while using porcelain to create pendants.

This class is perfect for those interested in creating unique jewellery that can be cherished and worn for years to come.

All workshops will be led by experienced and qualified instructors, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for all participants. Materials and tools will be provided, so children can come ready to learn, create, and have fun.

Not only will these workshops allow children to explore their creativity, but they will

also develop skills such as hand-eye coordination, patience, and problem-solving. Additionally, these workshops will provide an opportunity for children to socialize and make new friends with those who share similar interests.

Animal Aid is facing a challenge in our cattery as we struggle to accommodate the number of cats coming in. We are committed to providing a safe and comfortable environment for every animal in our care while they wait to find their new families. Right now, our cattery is currently at capacity and we are struggling to keep up with the number of animals coming in.

We have tried everything to make space for incoming lost and surrendered cats, including extending out kitten’s time in foster care, and housing two cats per pen. We have even purchased additional maxi crates to accommodate extra cats. Despite these efforts, our shelter is overflowing with cats who are looking for loving homes.

The Super Mario Bros Movie Starring Chris Pratt, Charlie Day and Anya Taylor-Joy Rated PG 3.75/5

The Super Mario Bros Movie is a bright, charming adventure that does its source games justice.

Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) must protect the magical Mushroom Kingdom from the monstrous King Bowser (Jack Black).

If HBO’s The Last of Us show is an excellent adaptation of a video game that was already quite cinematic in tone and style, then The Super Mario Bros Movie is an adaptation that superbly captures the cheerful, madcap vibes of the Mario games.

The Super Mario Bros Movie features colourful, vibrant animation, endearing characters and fun action set-pieces that draw clear inspiration from the games, with plenty of power-ups and gravity-defying jumps.

Fans will delight in the many subtle references sprinkled throughout the film.

The film is very light on plot or tension, but this isn’t an issue: most of the games boil down to ’save Princess Peach and defeat Bowser’, so it’s natural for the film to take the same streamlined family-friendly approach.

CARTOON

This film’s Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) also has more agency and an aura of plucky defiance.

What is an issue is some rushed pacing and a distinct lack of Luigi, who is sidelined as Bowser’s captive for much of the movie, even so, Mario and Luigi’s close brotherly bond forms the film’s sweet emotional core.

The so-called “video game movie curse” is overblown.

While there are many awful video game movies, there are also many good video game movies, including Werewolves Within, Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tomb Raider (2019), Mortal Kombat (2021) and Uncharted (shut up; I liked it).

Playing in most Victorian cinemas, The Super Mario Bros Movie is not only entertaining and well- made in itself, but reflects a clear love and understanding of the source games.

WITH CHRISTINE SUN Red Dwarfs Make The Best Homes, by local author and The Star Mail’s film reviewer Seth Lukas Hynes, is a collection of science essays and science fiction about space colonisation.

The book opens with three in-depth and informative essays, where the author introduces the Kardashev Scale, its basics and flaws, and how it has influenced the views of scientists and science fiction writers about space travel and settlement.

The scale of ranking civilisations was devised by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964, based on the notion that a civilisation’s degree of technological progress is directly related to its energy consumption and use.

As human civilisation grows and exhausts its energy resources, it needs to reach beyond earth in order to sustain itself. By harvesting the energy output of other planets, stars and even galaxies, humanity will be able to advance and expand enormously.

The tricky part of this process is not just where to go and how to get there – at least in theory – but what to do with our proposed destination.

As the author discusses examples of planetary, stellar and galactic civilisations in popular fiction and films, we are urged to consider “a realistic, environmentalist and post-colonialist model” for space colonisation and settlement.

Indeed, as we explore issues such as space travel for the wealthy elite of the West, the impact of terraforming on a planet’s native species, and whether cryopreservation or embryo colonisation is the best way to transport intergalactic settlers, we cannot help but agree with the author’s assertion that “colonising another world is an ethical proposition”.

The author’s broad knowledge of scientific development and debate both real and imagined throughout the past century is impressive, helping to make these science essays highly accessible and entertaining.

More importantly, the author argues that terraforming and faster-than-light technology (e.g. Star Trek’s warp-drive and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’s Infinite Improbability Drive) are merely “narrative devices inserting human characters, themes and drama into radical new settings”.

This is a critical point because, as much as science is a systemic endeavour to build and organise knowledge about the universe, it is fiction that helps us imagine what this universe can be. Science informs, while fiction inspires.

The book’s fiction section contains stories, poetry and illustrations “of interplanetary drama and galactic federations” from over a dozen contributors.

While these depict different concerns and consequences of space travel, the essence is ultimately our desire for connection, both across and beyond humanity.

Equally worth mentioning is the diligence and discipline displayed in the book’s presentation. This is a carefully researched and referenced work that has struck a fine balance between science facts and fiction.

Why wash your doona?

Most people are quite diligent when it comes to washing their sheets once a week and airing their mattress, but how often are you washing your Doona?

The humble Doona is a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria, as well as collecting sweat and skin cells from us in our sleep. Considering we spend up to 35 per cent of our lives in bed, that’s a whole lot of organic matter.

A Doona that hasn’t been washed for a year is likely to be home to more than 20,000 dust mites.

There are a few schools of thought when it comes to how regularly you should be cleaning your Doona. The general consensus is that Doona’s should be washed every two to three months, or at least twice a year.

Synthetic fibre Doona’s should be washed in a large machine on a normal spin cycle at 60 degrees Celsius (This is the Hot setting on

our Machines), or as high as the care label suggests.

Extended opening round

By Callum Ludwig In Premier Division, there is a staggered start to the league season, with teams playing on Saturday 15 April, Saturday 22 April and even Sunday 23 April for the opening round.

Reigning Premiers Narre Warren will head east to face Pakenham away from home on Saturday 15 April, looking to start off their premiership defence with a strong showing. The Magpies lost only one game all season last year and sat atop of the ladder at season’s end, while the Lions just missed out on finals by a single win, finishing in sixth place.

The two sides also met in round one last year, with Narre Warren coming out on top 15.19, 109 to 10.13, 73 with a five-goal to onethird quarter doing most of the damage for the Pies at home at Kalora Park.

When they faced off in round ten, Narre asserted their dominance with a commanding 7.2, 44 to 20.12, 132 win away from home.

Olinda Ferny Creek will host Upwey Tecoma on 22 April, looking to push for finals once again after last year’s fourth-placed finish, while the Tigers will like a stronger start to the season to push themselves towards finals contention after a seventh-placed finish in 2022.

It was a tight encounter in round two at Upwey Tecoma’s home ground, with the Bloods just coming out on top with a 12.8, 80 to 13.15, 93 win.

Olinda Ferny Creek gave the Tigers no such hope when they met again in round 11, dominating the contest in an 18.16, 124 to 9.4, 58 win.

Monbulk will welcome Woori Yallock, with both teams just missing out on finals and the premiership respectively last season.

In round three of the 2022 season, the Hawks picked up a thrilling seven-point win away from home to stun the Tigers, the final score reading 13.6, 84 to 13.13, 91.

It will be tight at both ends of the Premier Division ladder in 2023.

Woori Yallock did make amends in round 14 however, defeating Monbulk 7.18, 60 to 12.11, 83.

It’s a local rivalry for the final fixture of the round on Sunday 23 April, with Mt Evelyn hosting Wandin in what is certain to be a fiery game. Last year a crucial win for Mt Evelyn over Officer three weeks from the season’s end saved them from relegation as they finished eighth, while Wandin was a clear third and lost to Woori Yallock in a tight preliminary final.

The Dogs have some massive recruits in 2023 and will look to emulate or even better their results over the Rovers in 2022, winning 15.14, 104 to 10.18, 78 in round one and 12.9, 81 to 22.21, 153 in round 10 of the 2022 season.

Division One welcomes league newcomers Hallam and the relegated Officer, while Yarra Glen has dropped to Division Two and 2022 premiers Gembrook-Cockatoo ascending to Premier.

Berwick Springs is shaping up to be a big improver in 2023 after a strong backend of the season last year and will look to set the tone against Hallam at home in round one.

The Titans finished third in 2022 and were knocked out by Gembrook-Cockatoo in the preliminary final, while the Hawks finished fourth in Division Four of the Southern Football Netball League and were also defeated in a preliminary final, well beaten by eventual premiers Lyndhurst.

Senior Outer East clubs were largely happy to welcome Hallam to the league, voting 19-3 in favour of the Hawks’ admission to the competition.

Emerald will look to give Officer a tough start to life in Division One, with the 2022 fourth-placed finishers taking the Premier Division bottom-dwellers at home.

The Bombers were defeated in an elimination final by Berwick Springs last season, while the Kangaroo’s only win in Premier Division came against Mt Evelyn.

The last time the two sides faced off was back in 2019, due to the entire and partial cancellations of the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Back then Officer thumped Emerald 10.5, 65 to 22.15, 147 in round seven and 17.14, 116 to 4.3, 27 in round 14 but personnel changes since then make it an interesting contest.

In the final match of the round, 2022 runner-up Seville welcomes a young Healesville side to the back oval in Seville, as works continue on the main surface.

The second-placed Blues will be looking to go one better in 2023 after their Grand Final loss to Gembrook-Cockatoo and are definitely the team to beat, while Healesville will look to secure the finals berth they just missed in finishing fifth and look to showcase their obvious talent more consistently.

Rounds seven and 21 last year were humbling experiences for the Bloods against the Blues, going down 29.16, 190 to 6.6 42 and 25.19, 169 to 8.4, 52 respectively but they did bookend an upset win in round 14 as Healesville toppled Seville 6.11, 47 to 4.4, 28 at home.

2022’s bottom-placed Belgrave will have the bye, looking to improve drastically on their 2022 season in which they finished without a win and were spared relegation due to Yarra Glen’s numbers troubles. The Magpies play Hallam away in round two.

Works on at Olinda reserve

By Tyler Wright Works at the Olinda Recreation Reserve are underway, with a sod turning event attended by local representatives and government officials on Tuesday 4 April.

A new netball court and four cricket nets are set to be built by the end of 2023 in a partnership between Parks Victoria and Yarra Ranges Council and a $7.67 million investment from the state government.

Hilltop Recreation Association (HRA) president Ben Selby-Hele said the new court will help meet rising demands in sporting facilities for locals, with the Olinda Ferny Creek Football and Netball Club and the Olinda Cricket Club using the reserve’s facilities.

“At the moment, our netballers travel off the mountain to train. Now [senior women] can come and partake and the synergy in the club will be a lot more wholesome,” Mr SelbyHele said.

“It’s been a six year project. At about the halfway mark, we went to VCAT because we were requesting tree removal, but through the democratic process we had to make environmental compromises.”

Mr Selby-Hele said it is people like Olinda Cricket Club president Dave Ardley that helped push for the additional facilities.

“It is absolutely going to be a fantastic facility,” he said.

“We’re a really diverse club and a project like this is going to help solidify us within the community.”

Monbulk MP Daniela De Martino said over 500 sporting club members use the reserve, with football participation for both girls and boys growing and larger teams using the reserve.

“The new facilities will ensure clubs like Olinda Ferny Creek can continue to be the heart of the community,” Ms De Martino said.

Parks Victoria’s Melbourne regional director, Sofia De Lesantis, said the construction of the netball and cricket facilities is the first stage of the Olinda green development.

Stage two is now in the works, with proposed enhancements for the reserve’s car park, providing picnicking shelters and a dog walking area.

Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence, said the new netball courts and cricket training facility will provide more reason for locals to “come and join in the fun”.

“Better facilities mean more participation, and greater opportunities for Victorians to experience everything community sport has to offer,” Ms Spence said.

Belgrave sporting clubs report some lively participation

By Parker McKenzie Local clubs have bounced back strongly from the Covid-19 pandemic with sporting teams in Belgrave reporting strong numbers of participants and club members, particularly with a growing amount of women’s teams.

Belgrave Cricket Club President Sean Connolly said members of the club are well up from pre-Covid-19 levels.

“A lot of our increases come through new avenues. We added an all-girls team into our juniors this year and our other junior sides have grown across the last four years,” he said.

“Our men’s sides have been at a solid four sides for a long time, we sort of tapered off a little bit but it has been more solid this year.”

He while it has been difficult to get people to commit to an entire summer of cricket, the club is “as strong as we’ve been in probably a decade.”

“There are a lot of people that missed a lot of time with family and a lot of time getting away,” he said.

“We’re in a strong spot because of the people that have come back and rallied around the club.”

South Belgrave Football Netball Club Chris Huglin said the first season after pandemic restrictions were difficult, but numbers have since bounced back.

“Female participation in football is just incredible at the moment, this year we’ve introduced a women’s veterans’ team,” he said. mailcommunity.com.au
